Publisher’s Note I always felt that L’Amour Diversity Magazine was a magazine out on the grid that was striving to look for the diverse in arts, fashion, life and entertainment. L’Amour Diversity Magazine has dealt with some controversial issues and touched on subjects as they were happening in the real world. I take pride in having been the first SL magazine with a transgender story. We covered the mighty election of the century with many diverse reactions between who wanted Hillary or Donald and why. We covered the controversial topic of marijuana for what I know for many, is much more a positive than a negative. We will again be covering some great stories for our readers of L’Amour Diversity Magazine. We have the Classy N Sassy Spotlight story, other stories will include an expose on Sex & Fashion in Second Life and much much more. So please keep an eye out for these and many Diverse stories from the staff of Diversity. And remember if it needs to be said, “L’Amour Diversity,” is going to bring it. Write On!!!

I met the original Bitch Barbie many years ago. I would say she is in the top 10 of my most favorite people on SL. When she decided to leave SL, I was beyond sad. I never had someone leaving SL affect me the way it did when Barbie left.

By the time I shut down B. Barbie I was hemorrhaging money. I am much more streamlined now. Ava: What is the satisfaction in running an SL Business?

Forward a year, and I get Cassie1961 in my Cassie1961: Seeing a finished outfit, that I box, “I am back Ava!” I had no clue at first, am proud to wear. who it was, and was so confused. Then it hit me, Cassie1961 is B. Barbie, re-branding and coming back as Classy N Sassy, better than ever, with a renewed inspiration. I was so happy to have Cassie1961 back and thought to myself, it was worth her being gone for a year. Her designs are fierce! She has a renewed sense of gusto with her designs. I sat down with Cassie to get the scoop on her return and her new brand, Classy N Sassy. Ava: How did you find SL? Cassie1961: I was looking online for roleplay options to relieve stress in real life. Ava: When and why did you start creating? Cassie1961: I was looking for clothing that fit the roleplay and was unable to find anything I liked so I started to make my own. Ava: I know you left Second Life for a bit. How has your clothing line evolved since you have been back? Cassie1961: I am no longer trying to please everyone, and I have slowed down, so what I produce is higher quality.

Ava: What has changed over the years in running a business on Second Life?

Ava: What are the challenges in running a Cassie1961: The customer base is smaller business in SL and how has it changed over and more discriminating. There are so the years? few that can make original meshes, we are having to be more creative in texturing, so it Cassie1961: Pricing is a challenge, trying is all not cookie cutters. to find that sweet spot between keeping things affordable and not losing money.

Ava: What is your RL satisfaction regarding creating in SL? Cassie1961: The ability to show my creative side. Ava: What are RL challenges to create in SL? Cassie1961: Balancing family and Second Life. Ava: What do you look for in staff, models, bloggers for your brand? Cassie1961: Honesty, Individuality, Loyalty, and dependability. Ava: How do you market your brand? Cassie1961: At this point, shows and word of mouth. My goal for the next three months is to increase my brand viability. Ava: What sneak peek or new things can we expect from Classy N Sassy for the fall/ winter season? Cassie1961: Warm and cozy to sizzling hot sexy. Ava: What do you want your customers to know about you? Cassie1961: I am always willing to listen. Ava: Do you have anything else that you would like to add? Cassie1961: One of the hardest things that many designers must deal with is the number of amazing mesh makers who have left due to the rampant theft of their work. I totally agree with that statement Cassie, and I have also seen stolen designs being taken to other worlds other than Second Life. I would like to thank you Cassie for not only being my friend, but for coming back to Second Life, and being a wonderful designer on the grid.

I have been on Second Life for 11 years now, and in the course of that time, I have met many people. In 2016, one of my friends mentioned that he was interested in getting into some kind of therapy program on SL. I knew SL had support groups, but he was actually interested in trying to find a therapist. I had never even considered such a thing existed on SL before. So, I began searching groups and started messaging a few group owners asking if they could send me in the right direction. One of those people was Avalon Birke. Avalon has The Virtual Mental Health Center on the Nonprofit Commons sim, where she provides the SL community with mental health information and resources. We instantly became friends because of my own background in Psychology and have been friends ever since. Avalon is a lovely caring person and we have stayed in touch over the last two years. Recently she was telling me about her new RL and SL Non-Profit, Sim Ed Learning Network. After she told me about it, I really wanted to feature it in this issue of L'Amour Diversity Magazine, because it's a really great resource that I feel people should know about. So, let's learn more about Avalon and her business partner and RL friend, MarieCormier. Their sim consists of two halves. One side is dedicated to the meeting rooms and resource centers and on the other part that Marie calls American Historic House Tours, she is bringing her RL vintage home passion to life. Avalon tells us that in 2006, her RL husband read an article about Second Life and told her "you should check it out, it's like The Sims, maybe you'll like it" Avalon laughs when she tells me this and says, "12 years later..." Marie says that she and her friend Avalon were having coffee together at DZ Akins, one of their favorite RL restaurants when Avalon told her about SL. Marie says that she wasn't sure what to expect, but she checked it out that very day. She tells us that she was immediately hooked and still looks forward to the fun she finds on SL everyday. Avalon says that right now, her main focus on SL is the SimEd region. They are creating educational content, setting up meeting spaces and classrooms and seeing to the everyday operation of the sim. She admits though, that she has a tendency to live at the Collabor88 event when she needs a break from the "work" side of her SL. Marie says that her obsession is old houses, both in RL and now she has brought that obsession into SL. She is currently working on a tour of houses that are good

examples of the styles presented in "A Field Guide to American Houses" by Virginia Savage McAlester. She says that she enjoys hunting down houses that clearly demonstrate Amercian house styles to visitors, and hopes to get people interested in preservation efforts in the real life struggle to save America's endangered vintage homes. Avalon tells us that the real life non-profit organization of the SimEd Network came about organically for them. She says that they each had some projects they wanted to develop, and they were brainstorming the best way to do that. They knew they wanted a virtual platform, and were very pleasantly surprised when they got their 501(c)(3) status fairly easily. She says that they looked at all the different platform options, from Sansar to Sinespace, to High Fidelity, but none of them came close to what she knew was possible in Second Life. Avalon managed the Wellness Island sim in Second Life for five years and still maintains a mental health resource presence at the Nonprofit Commons. She knew there was a significant number of educators, clinicians, researchers and students in Second Life, so it made sense to her to bring the Sim Ed Network to SL. Marie expands upon what Avalon has to say and explains that they wanted to bring their projects and ideas to a virtual world where people could get free information and education. She says that it is important to both of them to help people, and that Second Life affords them a way to do just that while still having fun. She tells us that "Second Life provides a special opportunity for old house lovers to step into a world where their passions come to life." Marie says that in Second Life, "The vintage homes people drool over in books and photos are now right in front of us in a surprisingly real way, and you can explore and see themn in all their glory." "It's an emotional pull," Marie explains, "and we learn best when our passions are nutured." I asked them what made them want to build a sim like this, did it start as one big idea or start small and grow from there? Avalon laughs and says, "it was one biiig idea." She tells us that they were able to get a great deal of help from the Lindens and particularly thanks Bianca Linden for all her help, "so we were able to hit the ground running." She says though that it is a continual "work in progress" for them as they L’Amour Diversity Magazine | Issue 20, October 2018

add new content and projects. For Avalon, and how to make it all a reality. I am so that potential for growth is one of the best grateful to her for this!" things about the project. They both say that they met and became Marie enthusastically agrees that from the the best of friends in RL, Avalon says very beginning it was one big idea. She they met "under a very lucky set of says, "we were focused and enthusiastic circumstances" and Marie says that she and still are." She says, "I really do have "immediately knew that this was a lifeto give the credit to my wonderful and time friendship." Marie adds, "She is my AMAZING friend Avalon Birke for making best friend, so when she introduced me it all happen! She knew exactly what to do to Second Life it naturally followed that

46

Issue 20 October, 2018 | L’Amour Diversity Magazine

Avalon and Marie would have many, many adventures together, and we have many more to go! I am amazed at how PATIENT she has been with me as I learn Second Life, and how she takes all my constant questions and sweetly answers them without even a hint of annoyance. No small gift, seriously." I asked Avalon if she will be providing psychological services at the sim for the

SL Community and she said, "That’s a good question, since that was my focus on Wellness Island. I don’t provide direct psychological services in Second Life. There are some legal and ethical ins and outs that I am not completely comfortable with yet. That said, we have migrated the entire Wellness Island library and added to it, region-wide. We have a strong Mental Health Resource Center, and have expanded our resources on the Education

Center side to include physical health and wellness. I also want to get back to offering support groups and classes. My focus is on providing resources and information, offering support to other SL groups, and providing a bridge to RL help when needed. Marie adds that Avalon's Education Center side of the sim is "so welcoming, bright and cheerful. It is healing just to be there." When I asked them both what inspires them in SL, Avalon said, "I am completely incapable of designing or building anything, so I am always inspired by the residents of Second Life and what they are capable of. There is no place like SL, and after 12 years I am still blown away by what residents create. Marie inspires me as well! Seeing SL through the eyes of my dear friend has been a lot of fun." Marie told me, "Avalon inspires me because she is SO creative, even though she doesn't see herself that way, skilled and knowledgeable! She can do anything in SL

48

Issue 20 October, 2018 | L’Amour Diversity Magazine

and does it all with such kindness. And the house builders in SL are my superheros. I have had the pleasure and good fortune to meet some of the most talented creators in all of SL." When I asked them about the ups and down of owning such a sim in SL, Marie said, "For me, the downside is definitely that I am not a techy person, and I often run in to issues that I can't resolve. It takes me 5 times as long as the next person to fix something, or to figure out what is going on. But in the end it is worth it because we are always learning, and that's what SimED is all about." Avalon answered the question this way, "Managing a big project like this brings a good deal of work. We both have jobs and families in RL, so time can be limited. The upside is that it is definitely worth it. When someone visits and expresses that

something here answered a question or opened their minds to something new, it reminds me of why we are here." I asked them if they had any crazy stories they can share with us about things that have happened at their sim, which as our regular readers can attest to, is a standard question that we typically ask people when we feature their sims in the magazine. It just so happened though, that she told me a story prior to the

50

interview when we were setting up a time for me to ask her the interview questions, about something that happened recenty. So, when I asked her the question she laughed and said, "Oh boy. We just discovered that a SimED visitor snuck a bunch of pornographic stuff into an alcove of our main Library, and set herself up a home up there! Sex furniture and‌" she coughs, "toys, a condom machine, and x-rated anime running 24/7. We couldn’t figure out why she and assorted

“guests” were on the region more than we were, or where all our prims had gone! Lesson learned – be careful who you give build rights to. Of course we reported and banned her – seriously, who does something like this? On a Nonprofit sim?? We’re a charity, for goodness sake. But truthfully? We haven’t stopped laughing about it. It was the most bizarre thing I have seen in SL in my 12 years here." Marie adds, "oh man, that story will blow their socks off! This person had no

conscience and violated our very special Island where we want all to feel safe and welcomed. It was so disappointing, but then it was hilarious, just so outrageously funny that I barely even know how to talk about it!" I asked them both what they would change on SL if they could change anything. Marie says she would like "more help from support, or faster replies for support tickets." Then she adds, "they

need more staff." Avalon tells me that she was asked that question years ago in another interview and her answer is still the same, "technical issues can still be a pain."

and activities not always available in RL."

I asked them both what a day at the SimEd Learning Network would be like and Avalon says, "We are still in building mode in some ways. There is always a When I asked them what they enjoy most new notecard to develop, a new group about SL, Marie thinks for a moment and to contact, a new item to add. As we get says, "hmm just about everything. Where more and more visitors, we get to visit else can you go and do all the things with them, answer questions, and you love in such a short time? Tour a give them a tour." historic house, swim at the beach, visit a museum, take a class, shop for clothes, Marie adds, "If you start your day on the start a study group, build a town?? I really Education side of our sim, Avalon's side, believe that SL is a place where we can you will immediately feel uplifted when explore ourselves and what makes us you land in her town square and take tick." in the welcoming buildings, landscaping and places for outdoor relaxation. Then Avalon winks and adds, "Other than hair as you explore her buildings you will find and clothes and home decor? I believe every kind of resource you that this platform can reach people with can think of related to mental health, even resources, opportunities, socialization, the history of medicine and nutrition! have to say that no one should miss her aviary where you can see, hear and almost feel the water, the sound of the birds, and the beauty of plants. Then she smiles and contiues, "I never want to leave when I visit."

and will have activities and events in the future, mostly related to preservation topics. I am looking for old house lovers to come and study, socialize, and enjoy talking about why we are so drawn to vintage homes!

Marie tells us that on her side of the sim, "there are six houses in McAlester Park that I have chosen based on their realistic adherence to American house styles as defined by Virginia Savage McAlester. There are signs in front of each house that will have notecards explaining the defining features of each style, and will teach the visitor how to identify these styles in real life. This will be an on-going project and will eventually have lots of information inside each house, so "house museums" that visitors can come to enjoy.

I asked them what their future plans are for the SimED Network and Avalon shares, "I’d like to see more SL nonprofit or educational folks use our free facilities for their meetings, displays, and workshops – we are still getting the word out about that. I also plan to update the SL Health Directory – SL has a number of RL qualified clinicians, therapists, social workers, and doctors, and an even higher number of residents who claim to be those things but are not. Consumer education is a passion of mine in both worlds. A list of legitimate health professionals in SL would be a big help." Marie smiles and simply responds, "I look forward to creating new activities and fun things to do for everyone who visits us."

The other side of my parcel I call "Oak Street" which is the little town that supports the residential McAllester Park,

They would like us to know that they have a Facebook page, a Twitter Feed and a Plurk for the SimEd Learning Network. They are also listed in the Second Life search and they spend a lot of time in outreach to market the sim. I asked them if there is anything else that they wanted to tell the readers of L'Amour Diversity Magazine about the SimEd Learning Network and Marie enthusiasically responded, "Oh gosh yes please come and participate in our Halloween Costume Contest! The very first custom, historically accurate house made for me by VRCreative goes

to the winner! This house is special to me because it is based on an RL little folk house that was saved from demolition in San Diego, and has now come to life in SL. It is our Folk Victorian, and I love that little house. You get it free if you win!" "Also, for the most creative photo you will win a historically accurate pose created by Avalon Birke! You can test out this pose in the Tin Type studio on Oak Street. It was based on an RL tin type photo. And we had to have a 3rd place prize so we are giving 250L to the 3rd place winner....so you see, you can't

lose! Just come to our sim and explore all the haunted and creepy spots we have prepared for you, and take a creative and fun photo. Send it full-perm to me or to Avalon before Halloween, and we will let you know the results. I am so excited about it!" Marie also wants us to know, "that eventually American Historic House Tours will need docents to hang out and answer questions for visitors. You don't have to be an expert, just an enthusiast! A select few will be able to live in town in one of the many apartments, rooms, or even townhouses that I have placed on

Docent Row. That is a future endeavor, but I would still love to talk to anyone who loves old houses like I do, and discuss possibilities." Thanks Avalon and Marie for sharing your big idea with us for this issue of L'Amour Diversity Magazine. To our readers, use the SLURL to go visit their sim right now. What are you waiting for? Welcome to the first article in my column featuring the gems and jewels Second Life has to offer. Each week I will be exploring the grid and checking out the hottest hangouts, craziest clubs and those special spaces we love to gather in to socialize and have fun. Kicking things off is a rather funky place I stumbled into called Limelight. Labeled as a Social and Sex Club, I haven’t come for the sex, just for the company and if you can ignore the couples getting freaky in the corner and the bootylicious bodies on stage, this club is awesome!

loving the decor, there is something else that makes this club rather appealing; the music.

To say it is eclectic is an understatement and when I arrive there is a rather cool rap tune pulsing across the place and avatars all over are shimmying to the beat. Not The first thing that catches my eye is the my usual choice of music I decide to give dance floor. It is disco and makes me it a chance but then, just as things start want to dance! The flashing lights and to rez and I find a dance I like, the familiar colors are really alluring, and I find myself intro to the Bee Gees classic ‘Staying Alive’ asking where the dance ball is located just starts playing and I can’t help but smile. so I can cut a rug and create some shapes. For the first time in my life I wish I was But other than being a total magpie and wearing a 70s white suit and some killer

platform heels, but I’m not, and my simple dress will have to make do. Some music just makes you feel upbeat and that has a real effect on the mood of the place and this is one of those tunes. Then like lyrical whiplash the music changes and I am listening to an unknown tune all with French lyrics. I must confess, as an ignorant British girl, I, of course, don’t understand, but I like it.

don’t mind, it comes with the territory and I love that my name is such a great conversation starter.

I chat to a few of the other patrons and the usual subject of my name comes up and that it always makes people think of the Beatles. A few of my fellow dancers start singing a few bars of ‘Hey Jude’ and I laugh and go along with it, probably for the ten thousandth time this week. But I

Limelight is just that, light and fun with a side of naughty. It isn’t a place for the kids, but certainly the ideal hangout for you and your honey. So, grab the SLURL and add Limelight to your teleport list today.

There are plenty of snuggle spots at Limelight and as previously mentioned, plenty of chance to get naughty. You might be put off if carnal pleasure isn’t your thing, but in my opinion, it doesn’t define the club.

Pet: There is a line that most of you will be familiar with - into each life a little rain must fall. These stories in "The Outsiders" are real and personal to us and maybe to you also. The sampling of horror stories that are depicted on stage are real and can be any member of the audience. We all know someone whose life has been touched by a horror. We all know someone who is just too good for words and freaks out when they discover, "they are not the best.” What we tried to demonstrate in this show was the formation of community. It is through the lack of community that we begin to feel loneliness, sorrow and that our lives don't matter. Toby: While I could have bought all my tattoos at the time I felt, as in RL, tattoos should be personal in nature. This drove me to learn to make my own, for personal use. I was later encouraged by friends to sell my creations as they were good enough, in their eyes. I enjoyed the process, and since I was experienced in Photoshop, it seemed a natural progression from photography. Ava: What inspires you in your work?

Toby: Whether it's photography or tattoos, I get my inspiration from the people I work with, or who commission my work. Most of the time it is simply through chatting with friends, who offer suggestions through "You know what would make a cool tattoo?" scenarios. Ava: Are you an artist in RL? Toby: I am not an artist, but I enjoy and appreciate art. I do like to draw, and I am pretty good at it. I designed my RL tattoos, as I felt I wanted something truly mine and not picked off a wall or out of a book,

My part is to bring it all together, as radical or unrelated as their texture designs may be. I am a curvy girl in real life, and like the Sir-Mix-A lot song, this Baby Got Back’. Unfortunately, I have rather low body confidence, so my avatar doesn’t reflect my real-life shape. But even if your selfesteem is sky high, is it okay to show every inch of skin, even in a virtual world?

attention? Surely there is a time and a place for that, but does it have to be on display when I am out shopping or at a casual hangout with my friends?

Ironically, this has become the norm now in our virtual world, so much so that when someone walks past you, totally covered Second Life has made mega bucks up, they look out of place. Now don’t get on avatars letting it all hang out, and me wrong, Second Life is about freedom everyday, designers are bringing us more of speech, expression, experimentation revealing and intimate day wear, showing and everything in between. Other than off more of those pixelated bodies. a few that have been in SL for years, Perhaps SL should go full natural and let and simply aren’t interested in how us all be naked all the time! their avatar looks, we all try to create a character that is confident and a big pull I am by no means a prude and some of this game is that we can wear anything tasteful cleavage or a sneaky butt cheek we want, anytime we want. here and there is all good in my book, but why do so many beautiful avatars, My avatar is everything I am not in real life of all shapes and sizes, choose to dress and I constantly refer to her as my virtual like a street walker? Everywhere I go in SL, I am faced with When I was into BDSM I was buying sexy and extreme fashion, items of clothing most revealing clothes, but now I buy anything people wouldn’t look twice at in real life. that fits well and looks good.” I was curious Whenever I search for a place or a person, as what drew her to an outfit, expecting her to soon as I click the search button I am faced mention how revealing or fitted it was, but with ads for ‘gentleman’s’ clubs full of female she didn’t. “I shop for myself, so the main avatars in all manner of positions, their body thing I look for is the quality. I don’t want my parts sized to the max and exposed to the clothes to look cheap and they must have full. good textures.” Why does SL have to be so overtly sexual? Can’t we play in this adult game without every encounter turning into a pornographic nightmare? And before you say ‘sex sells,’ so do a lot of other things. This isn’t about sex in SL, but rather SL fashion, so I talked to a few fashion-conscious folks that I met on my travels and asked their opinion on the fashion trends out now. Suggesting that clothes in SL are too revealing, one of the people I spoke to, a

I talked to a female friend of mine about this and wondered if perhaps I had got it wrong. “I actually do think there are too many poorquality outfits that over-expose, but there are also a lot of clothes, in a hundred different styles to choose from, that are actually pretty great.” She went on to say, “So if you are prim and proper and don’t like the revealing outfits, there is a choice for more every day clothing, you just have to look a bit harder.” Still not convinced, I had a chat with another

good friend of mine, Jaylen Oh, who also happens to own shopping event On9, and is the creator behind Me Sew Sexy fashion brand. I asked him straight out, “why do women in SL wear such revealing clothes?” His response was not what I wanted to hear, but actually made sense. “In SL, we do things that we generally would not or cannot do in RL. We all wear and do what makes ourselves feel good. Let's be honest, few of us have model figures and walk around wearing sexy clothes in RL and so, in SL we get to dress like those lucky few the mainstream media has told us look great. So, we want to look good and feel good in SL. That is the reason why.” I wanted to stamp my foot and say “No,” that clothing in SL is degrading to women and then I stopped and realized that unless you are playing a slave on a Gorean roleplay sim, you wear whatever you want and for many different reasons. If you have curves on top of curves it is fine to wear a pair of denim shorts that disappear among your folds. If you have perfect perky gravity defying breasts, why can’t you wear an open chested dress? It seems that this writer’s idea of what is acceptable and what isn’t, doesn’t echo what many people say in SL, and that is okay. Dress in what makes you happy and lets all enjoy the fashion highs and lows this crazy, curve obsessed, virtual world has to offer.

Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy: Murder of Mom By: Hadley Carrington It all began at the age of three months for Gypsy Rose Blanchard, reports her father, Rod. After hearing Gypsy’s struggles, Habitat for Humanity built them a fully accessible home after Dee Dee broke the news that Gypsy now had Multiple Sclerosis and needed a wheelchair. Hospital records show Dee Dee taking Gypsy to the hospital over 100 times from 2005-2015, including several free medical air lifts and non-profit hospitals like the Children’s Hospital of New Orleans. Those around her felt inspired by her bright glow under such dismal circumstances. She was gifted trips to Disney Land by generous citizens.

Even in seemingly dire circumstances, she somehow made trips to the Special Olympics and was also named, Honorary Queen of the Krew Parade, the city’s version of Mardi Gras. It was quite the honor. Throughout it all, Gypsy never seemed to feel sorry for herself, as many in a similar circumstance would. She seemed to always see the glass half full even when they removed her salivary glands to control her drooling, and she endured other multiple surgeries. Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy is feigning or inducing sickness to one’s child. The goal is to receive sympathy and care from others for the parent, normally the mother. When a mother introduces an illness or ailment causing substance that is too harsh for the child, many times it ends up in death. Dee Dee used that as a type of assertive power by squeezing Gypsy’s hand, to keep her from seeking outside help. She was hit with coat hangers and an open hand. In June of 2015, Godejohn entered the house where he stabbed Dee Dee to death while Gypsy crouched in the bathroom covering her ears.
