This project rethinks the traditional commercial office building by choreographing circulation through the building, not just as a means to get you from point A to point B, but as a way to seamlessly connect social and work spaces. This attitude also influences the overall formal strategy, where by identifying the flow of movement within the neighboring community, it reveals a peculiar nature to the flow in the Arts District that is quite different from the one seen in downtown Los Angeles. The design, therefore, conforms to these strong diagonals bringing, not only a renewed typology that breaks away from the cookiecutter boxed architecture currently present in the Arts District but also creates a balanced connection between the building profile and its urban context.

This balanced connection is achieved through carefully articulated nodes across the site, each of which has been formulated as a direct response to its urban context.

Starting with the site itself, given the urban location of the site, it’s existing terrain is nearly flat and therefore, reconceived as a dynamic field of vectors, which are then activated by pivotal points that were conceived by identifying the flow of movement through the site. This displacement in the urban topography results in a series of volumes imbedded within the urban landscape that appears to emerge from the site itself.


These volumes are then further manipulated to not only provide modes of access but also define a public plaza, restaurant and service entrance within it that formulates a direct response to the storefront condition that exists along ‘Traction Avenue’.

The second node is articulated within the design’s vertical extension, where the design profile has been pulled out to not only meet the site boundary in order to maximize the building’s square footage but also to meet the height profile of the surrounding context.

Finally, the crown of the building has been fragmented, revealing itself as an icon or a symbol that hopefully sets the tone for future construction in the Arts District of Los Angeles.

So what you are seeing here is that all these moves are working together to merge the public components in the podium with the private commercial space in the tower, which is a break away from conventional towers where differeing programs is often relegated to seperate and disjointed volumes, therefore cycling back to the original intent, only this time, of creating a seamless connection between contemporary speculation and the urban fabric of Los Angeles.

Situated on a prime hilltop site overlooking the Yongding River, the design of the building seeks inspiration from the continuously looping traditional homes of the Hakka Minorities. However, it also looks to re-interpret the closed and introverted forms of the Tulou by seeking parallel inspiration from mathematical models of continuous inversion found in the mobius strip, klein bottle, and lorenz attractor.

In direct opposition to the conventional approach of the Tulou, which sit as platonic and inward facing closed objects dropped onto the landscape, this project seeks to integrate itself with the contours of the surrounding landscape.

Its dramatic looping roof form peels away from the terraced hilltop to create a continuous loop which is both plaza, facade, and roof. It simultaneously creates an inward facing enclosure towards its central performance stage, while maintaining an outward facing view over the surrounding hillside and the hundreads of historic Tulou which dot the local area.

This effort to seamlessly integrate the project into the landscape also bleeds into the design for the lobby. The ceiling and wall of the lobby area have been rationalized through associative modeling techniques to define its integration within the surrounding lanscape through a series of rational and easily describable contour lines. The variable spreading and collecting of curves react to the topography of the site creating a valley and river effect that not only encourages visual interaction but also defines programmatic space and accentuates the flow through the space.

Why the Los Angeles River?

The Arts District in Los Angeles is currently experiencing growth and development at a rapid rate. This sudden surge of interest in the neighborhood also shines light on the past glory of Los Angeles’ infrastructure, in particular the L.A. River. This generation is faced with a series of global issues with no blueprint to draw solutions from. These issues range from adopting sustainable practices to superimposed political boundaries.

In this case, the current push for sustainable methods in Los Angeles has focussed the attention on revitalizing the L.A.River. With large sums of money being invested in the revitalization efforts, I looked at the pockets of spaces that were a resultant of human development and are now inactive neglected spaces. For this sole purpose, I asked myself if there was a way to revitalize these neglected spaces throughout the course of the L.A. River and integrating the design with future developments by embracing rather than replacing the qualities that has spawned this unique piece of infrastructure.

Why Fabric as a material? 1. Translucency: The woven basecloth combined with the appropriate coating allows a transmission value of around 10%. This provides a very comfortable level of illumination compared to the full brightness of outside.

2. Clear Spanning Capabilities: While all other possible roofing materials require rigid intermediate support, fabric can span from one boundary right across to the opposite side in one unbroken sweep. 3. Great Tensile Capacity: Reduces the supporting framework to a minimum number of components, all working efficiently as a whole system. This in turn leads to a much more lightweight structure than other types of construction. 4. Easily Manipulated: The 3-dimensional nature of fabric allows for interesting and unique building forms that quickly captures the visual focus of attention.

5. Easily Constructed: In the case of most fabric structures, all of the manufacturing takes place off-site, in specialist membrane fabrication units and steel workshops. The components are then shipped to the location and assembled on-site. 6. UV Protection: Coated fabrics have very good UV absorbing and reflection properties. It offers safe shade to all users, whilst providing very comfortable light levels.

This design constitutes a small part of the larger machine at work here. However, it makes for a major step towards reclaiming and transforming the river banks into a new urban landscape that can be enjoyed and appreciated by residents and visitors to this vibrant part of Los Angeles.

The concept behind this project is defining a brand new ecosystem within a familiar urban setting. Given, this project is for a co-living model, it also revolutionalizes the traditional housing model that we are familiar with today. What if we could take what we already know about traditional housing, group programmatic spaces so as to avoid any unecessary redundancies and create a more efficient use of space that is specific to the characteristics of communal living? And that is what this project is about. It takes the nature of your daily live, work, play life and finds a common ground so as to define a brand new ecosystem of social interaction and personal growth.

By merely adopting a simple strategy of pushing and pulling on the site parameters, in elevation, to accomodate for shade, optimize the california sunshine, and provide means of egress; we create a striking shape to the facade that is entirely driven by the conditions of the site, making the archetypal character of this design a timeless icon that paves a way for a new typology for contemporary housing in downtown Los Angeles.

Taking the mass and trying to understand the inbetween space or to articulate a common ground for social interactions led to an extrusion of a diamond shape volume that also carries the facade language to the center that creates the relief in between required for opportunities of social interactions.
