Relationship Between Folly And Site
CONCEPT TO TAKE A SIMPLE CUBE AND MORPH IT INTO SOMETHING A LITTLE MORE IRRATIONAL. THE RULESET ESTABLISHED FOR THE MORPHING PROCESS ARE THE VIEWS YOU GET FROM THE SITE, I.E. EACH CUT OUT RESPONDS TO A SPECIFIC VIEW: 1) GRIFFITH OBSERVATORY, 2) HOLLYWOOD BLVD. AND 3) OCEAN VIEWS. THE SLICING OF THE SURFACES EMPHASIZES THE FRAMING OF WHAT THE VIEWER SEES AND THE SIZE OF THE APERTURES IS IN DIRECT RESPONSE TO THE SCALE OF THE EVENT IT IS FRAMING. FOR EXAMPLE, THE VIEWS FRAMING A SETTING SUN ARE THE LARGEST, WHILE THE VIEW TOWARDS HOLLWOOD BLVD. ARE MORE FOCUSED AND NARROWER.

CONCEPT CRADDLING THE GROUND AND MORPHING FROM THE SITE TO CALL OUT WHAT ALREADY EXISTS. BY THAT, I MEAN THE CURVED AXIS ESTABLISHED THROUGH THIS DESIGN DIRECTS THE VIEWER’S ATTENTION FROM THE VDL HOUSE TO SILVERTOP ACROSS THE HILL AND FROM SHALIN HOUSE TO SILVERLAKE AND DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES.

THE INITIAL EXPERIENCE AS YOU WALK INTO THE PROJECT IS THAT OF GOING FROM A COMPRESSED TO AN OPEN SPACE WHICH IS IN RESPONSE TO BEING RELEASED TOWARDS THE VIEWS OF SILVERLAKE HILLS AND THE L.A. BASIN. THIS GESTURE WAS DEVELOPED SO AS TO ENGAGE THE VIEWER FROM THE VERY BEGINNING AS HE WALKED INTO THE PROJECT. AFTER YOU MAKE YOUR WAY TO THE CENTER OF THE PROJECT, WHICH IS TERMED THE PIVOTAL POINT AS ALL PROGRAMMATIC ELEMENTS CONVERGE AT THIS POINT, YOU HAVE A CHOICE OF CONTINUING AHEAD TO THE READING AREA, OR MAKE YOUR WAY OUTSIDE TO THE OUTDOOR CAFE OR GO DOWN THE STAIRCASE TO THE GROUND BELOEW THAT HOUSES THE RESTROOMS, THE ‘ARCHIVE’ AND PROVIDES AN ALTERNATIVE ROUTE TO THE CAFE. THE LANGUAGE OF THE STAIRCASES INFLUENCES THE DESIGN WITH IT’S NOTION OF ‘PEALING’. THIS GESTURE OCCURS AT MOMENTS WHERE ITS EITHER REVEALING A VIEW, FRAMING A SPECIFIC MOMENT OR JUST ALLOWING YOU ACCESS FROM ONE SPACE TO ANOTHER. THIS GESTURE WAS DEVELOPED TO FURTHER EMPHASIZE THE IDEA OF ENGAGING THE VIEWER THROUGHOUT THE PROJECT AND ALSO TO DEVELOP A TECTONIC LANGUAGE THAT MIMICKS THE SURROUNDING LANDSCAPE OF HILLS AND MOUNTAINS,
