From the Desk of Commissioner Maribel Gomez Cordero

Summer is coming to a close, and with it begins the back to school season. It’s important to note that as you finish out these last weeks of summer freedom, Mayor Jerry Demings has issued a state of emergency in Orange County. We have seen our hospital COVID-19 patient numbers increase so he has asked we wear our masks indoors to protect each other.

If you or someone you know needs a free backpack and supplies this year, please join us on August 7 for a backpack drive thru event. It will be held at 1001 4th St., Orlando, FL 32824 from 9:00am to 11 or until supplies last. We will also be handing out masks and sanitizers in the bags.

Every month I have been hosting virtual community meetings to keep District 4 informed about what is happening in our part of town. This month we will have a New Library Update Town Hall on August 11 at 6:00pm with Commissioner Jim Gray as our guest.

On Wednesday, August 4 at 9:30am, we will have a ribbon cutting for our newest District 4 Park, Bomberos Field Park in the Moss Park area. I chose the name to honor Orange County Fire Station 77 (located next to the park) and all of our Orange County Fire Fighters. You are welcome to join us to celebrate the grand opening of more green space in our district with Mayor Jerry Demings and myself.

My goal is to be a bridge between the community and county. Moving forward, every Thursday before the Board of County Commissioner is meeting, I will highlighting items that affect District 4 along with countywide important issues. To be able to view this and more on what I am doing, follow me on Facebook by searching Maribel Gomez Cordero Orange County District 4 Commissioner.
