At Avalon Park, we pride ourselves on our strong connections and collaborative spirit. So, as we gear up for the new school year, I wanted to kick-off a series of interviews with members of the community, that I will feature in my monthly Coffee with Beat articles. And I would be remised if I did not start with an interview with one of our leading education leaders. It is so important for us to recognize the vital role our schools play in fostering a healthy, vibrant community. Recently the Florida Department of Labor and Education released the 2024 school grades, and I am happy to report that ALL the Avalon Park Schools and the surrounding neighborhoods were awarded an “A” rating. Awarded is not the right word…REWARDED is better! From the leadership to the students and parents our community gives 110% at these schools and I could not be prouder! In this month’s edition of Coffee with Beat, I had the pleasure of connecting with Jessica Swain, Principal of Avalon Elementary School. We covered the school’s engagement with the community, the incredible support from local businesses, and the exciting goals for the upcoming year. Principal Swain’s insights highlight the importance of community involvement in creating an enriching environment for our students.
BK: How does Avalon Elementary School currently engage with the Avalon Park community, and what are some recent examples of successful community partnerships?
Principal Swain: Avalon Elementary School engages with the Avalon Park community in many ways. Many of our Partners in Education are local businesses who make a positive impact on students in our community and at our school. These local businesses partner with us to provide enrichment activities, donate resources and incentives for our Mariners, volunteer during special events, and help our Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) with their programming. We are so blessed by the outpouring of support from everyone in the Avalon Park Community. Our most recent partnership was our spirit night at the Avalon Marketplace. This partnership allowed our Mariners and their families to enjoy a night out at the Marketplace, and the restaurants donated a percentage of their sales that night back to our school. If anyone is interested in partnering with our school, they should reach out to Kelly Bryant or Eryn Vargo, our Partner in Education Co-Coordinators, via email at Kelly.bryant@ocps. net and eryn@orlandomom.com.
BK: How can the Avalon Park community actively participate in helping Avalon Elementary School achieve its goals for 2024?
Principal Swain: Avalon Elementary has so many opportunities for our Avalon Park community to engage with our school to support our goals for the 2024-2025 school year. The easiest way to become involved is to become an OCPS ADDitions volunteer at volunteer.ocps.net. From school beautification projects to after-school clubs to mentoring students, there are many ways through which our community members can share their time and talents to positively impact the lives of our Mariners and our
Principal Swain: Since Avalon Elementary School opened its doors in August 2001, our motto has been “Yes, I Can!” We encourage our Mariners to work hard and have a growth mindset. This “Yes, I Can!” attitude allows them to break down barriers to learning and grow exponentially each year. Our teachers collaborate with each other and their students’ families daily to ensure they provide a rigorous and differentiated curriculum tailored to each child’s talents. Finally, our families’ and the community’s unwavering support ensure that our Mariners have the tools needed to succeed. We plan to maintain our ‘A’ rating by continuing to engage with our families and the Avalon Park community to ensure our Mariners and their teachers have all the resources they need to have another productive and successful school year.
BK: We have seen some fantastic initiatives from the school that show how you like to think out of the box when it comes to our children’s education, like your sustainable garden and book vending machine. What are some other projects happening at Avalon Elementary that the community might not be aware of?
Principal Swain: We are so proud of our sustainability initiatives and our book vending machine and how our community has embraced these initiatives to ensure we have what we need to continue to make an impact. Our Mariners love learning in our sustainability gardens and earning tokens to get a book from the book vending machine! Our next big project is creating a STEAM Lab. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. The vision for our STEAM lab is to create a space that encourages exploration and curiosity while making the learning more meaningful and the curriculum more authentic. STEAM activities help students develop their critical thinking skills and creativity by encouraging them to think outside the box, explore different perspectives, and come up with new ideas. The room will have lab tables and accessible materials so our teachers can focus on facilitating and enjoying the hands-on STEAM activities with their students. We want everything in this space to encourage ingenuity and foster innovation while also encouraging our students to explore careers in the STEAM disciplines.
BK: In addition to the amazing schools, what do you love about Avalon Park?
Principal Swain: My family and I have called Avalon Park home since 2003. My oldest attended all Avalon schools – Avalon Elementary, Avalon Middle, and Timber Creek High, while my youngest currently attends Avalon Elementary. I love everything about Avalon Park. We have a small-town feel that you can’t get anywhere else these days. You also can’t beat the accessibility to great restaurants, grocery stores, healthcare providers, and recreation spaces. Everything is located within walking distance from our home. When we closed on our home, our new keys were hanging from a key chain that read “Avalon Park – Live, Learn, Work & Play”. That always stuck with me. I am definitely an example of our community’s motto. I don’t have to leave the neighborhood because everything I need is right here, and I absolutely love that!
As we transition back into the school year, it’s vital for our community to support and engage with our local schools. Principal Swain’s dedication and the collective effort of the Avalon Park community are truly inspiring. This is just a small snapshot of what is happening in our local schools. By working together, we can ensure that Avalon Elementary, and all of our amazing schools, continue to thrive and provide an exceptional education for our children. I encourage you to continue to foster a healthy, supportive environment for our schools and maintain the strong sense of community that makes Avalon Park such a special place to live, learn, work, and play.

Happy August!
August is a vibrant month filled with diverse events and activities. From summer festivals and back-to-school preparations, there’s something for everyone. It’s a time of celebration, vacation, and cultural observances, making August a captivating and dynamic month worldwide.
With OCPS reopening its schools in August, now is a good time to start preparing for back to school. I recently hosted a back to school event at the Meadow Woods Recreation Center, where we were able to serve over 100 kids with school supplies and backpacks. Although the event is already past, if your child needs school supplies, please contact my office as we still have limited supplies available. Please call 407-836-7043 or email me at district4@ocfl.net.
2024 is an election year, and on August 20th we have the primary election. However, early voting is available at various locations throughout Orange County starting on August 5th and lasting through to August 18th from 9am to 7pm. You can go to https://ocfelections.com/ early-voting to find the early voting site closest to you. Voting by mail is also an option in this election. If you are interested and have not yet signed up to vote by
mail, please register at orange.electionsfl. org/vrservices/mbrs or by calling 407836-2070. Voting is one of our most basic civil rights, and I encourage everyone to exercise it by voting on or before August 20th.
With an “extremely active” hurricane season predicted for 2024, the Office of Emergency Management is focused on life-saving, property protection, and recovery. The Emergency Operations Center (EOC) was upgraded for optimal operations, increasing capacity from 40 to over 126 staff and responders. New technology enhances situational awareness, allowing monitoring via drone and traffic footage and linking with other centers and the National Weather Service. Security improvements protect the critical infrastructure and staff. Residents are encouraged to sign up for OC Alert for updates at OCAlert.net and visit the County’s Emergency Information page at ocfl.net/EmergencySafety/ EmergencyInformation.aspx
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, or if you would like to receive my newsletter, you can email me at district4@ ocfl.net or call my office at 407-836-5881. You can also meet me in person at one of my two satellite office locations. On the first Wednesdays of the month, you can
meet me at the East Orange Community Center (12050 E Colonial Dr) or on the Third Wednesdays of the month at the Meadow Woods Recreation Center (1751 Rhode Island Woods Cir). My time at both locations is from 10am to 12pm. It is my pleasure to serve you!

Technology That Seniors Need
These days, if you want to make your life a little easier, technology is a must. In fact, it’s so much of a necessity that not many people can get by without making use of the internet, an app, or some type of software. For seniors, technology can be a game changer when it comes to staying on top of daily todos. Today, Encore at Avalon Park outlines some examples of technology that many seniors are buying into to help make their day easier.
Technology for Prescription Medicine
Many seniors have to take prescription medications daily. This is where apps such as RoundHealth and CareZone are excellent examples that seniors can use if remembering to take medication regularly is an effort to do.
Pill Dispensers
Pill dispensers are handy for remembering which medication to take on what days. Pill dispensers such as The Medacube and the Livi Smart Pill Dispenser not only assist in helping seniors keep on track with their medication, but one can also prepare medication in advance to take with you on a trip or vacation.
Streamlined Document Access
It becomes harder and harder to keep up with decluttering due to a myriad of reasons, such as the lack of mobility, energy, and (let’s be honest) just a general disinterest in having to keep up the home for appearance’s sake. This is where digital tools such as a merging tool to combine PDF documents can come in handy to keep all your paperwork in one place by merging them together. It also helps when you need to find something urgently and you don’t have the time to sort through multiple cabinets or folders to find what you are looking for.
Fitness Equipment
Exercise is extremely important throughout one’s lifetime.
Furthermore, one could say it becomes even more critical to keep up with exercise routines as one advance in age, as it can help prevent the onset of certain types of age-related conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. Equipment that might come in handy includes the elliptical, stability balls, and a rowing machine.
Software to Help Connect with Others More Easily
In this digital age, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be communicating and connecting with family and friends more often, even if we live miles apart. Again, technology can be a literal lifesaver when you need to get hold of someone urgently, or you just want to connect with someone you haven’t spoken to in a while. Skype, Zoom, WhatsApp, and Google Meet are popular options if you want to connect on a personal or professional level.
Technology that Helps Keep One Safe at Home
For many seniors, the reality of injuring themselves at home and not having anyone to call on in time is a very real reality. With LifeCall, seniors can utilize this innovative technology to reach someone in an emergency by simply wearing the LifeCall pendant or wristband, which can alert the necessary emergency services in the event of a serious fall.
Technology is one of those things that can easily be taken for granted, as we are surrounded by it every place we turn. However, technology truly becomes useful when we can apply it to our lives to make it better, rather than just using it for the sake of using it.
Encore at Avalon Park offers the assisted living and memory care that seniors deserve. Call 407-270-7500.

LEARN
It is hard to believe that we are already talking about the kids going back to school. I feel like this summer just began. With school on the horizon and Prime Day and Tax Free Week coming, it is time set a budget and get prepped for back to school shopping. With 4 kids under my belt, I have nailed down some practical Back to School shopping tips for moms with multiple kids in school.
1. Assess what you have.
Assess what you currently have and can re-use before shopping. I like to buy a few extra every year so that when it comes time for back to school shopping, I get a little surprise by already having some stuff on hand.
I always go through their clothes too so that I can toss, keep and hand me down before I go shopping. It helps to know what we have and what we need ahead of time.
2. Budget in advance.
Create a budget based on the number of kids you have in school and what you currently have on hand. Plus, most school supply lists are out by now, making it even easier to know exactly what you need and don’t need.
I have figured now that it is about $100 per kid for supplies (including backpack and lunch box).
3. Compare prices.
I have to admit, this part drives me crazy..I just want to get it over with but, now that most places have apps, I can can compare Walmart, Target and Amazon before heading out the door/ordering online. Publix is also known for doing BOGO on
school supplies, so I like to see what they have too.
4. Take advantage of Prime Days and Tax Free Week.
Huge savings opportunities are available with both Prime Days and Tax Free Week. By planning ahead and comparing prices (and of course, with that budget), you’ll be able to knock out your supply list in one fell swoop.
5. Don’t buy for appearances.
This is a hard one especially in those tween and teen years, but making a purchase based on the item being practical and functional will beat “fashion” and popularity any day of the week.
That Minecraft lunchbox wasn’t “cool” anymore after the first 2 months of school, so the boys are getting plain black lunch boxes moving forward. No more nonsense there. Plus, I want to get something that will last all school year.
6. Shop Second-Hand.
Once Upon a Child, Goodwill, and Platos Closet are all great places to get good deals on clothes, shoes and back to school accessories. They often times have brand new items as well as gently used. With the rate that these kids grown out of clothes, it is a win win.
Plus, if you have a tween or teen girl, they can get all of the latest “fashion” at a fraction of the price!
Electronic Arts Selects 16 Local High School Students for its Get in the Game STEAM Camp in Orlando
Sixteen Central Florida high school students are gearing up for an unforgettable week at Electronic Arts (EA) for the interactive entertainment company’s Get in the Game STEAM Camp, July 19 and July 22-26, in Orlando.
This year, a record number of students representing 24 different Central Florida high schools applied for Get in the Game 2024, a program that provides college-bound women and non-binary students with mentorship and peer support, coding instruction and exposure to real-world applications of science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM).
Participants will enjoy a rare behind-the-scenes look at EA’s world-class technology and tools, and receive coaching from the software engineers and artists credited on iconic games such as EA SPORTS™ Madden NFL, EA SPORTS™ College Football and EA SPORTS™ PGA TOUR. They will also study coding with Ron Weaver, technical design director at the Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy (FIEA), the University of Central Florida’s globally recognized interactive entertainment graduate school. The camp culminates in a video game showcase spotlighting the games that students created with their peers during the week.
“We are proud to create an inclusive environment where women and non-binary students can take the first steps toward their dream of a career in video games, while also fostering a supportive community that empowers them to reach their full potential,” said Jocel Thornhill, director of operations and program management at EA Tiburon. “We look forward to welcoming a fifth cohort to EA Orlando this summer and to helping these future leaders grow and enhance their technology skill set as well as game design and development acumen.”
Get in the Game 2024 Participants
An employee volunteer-committee of EA professionals selected the 2024 cohort for their outstanding combination of coding skills, passion for the video games industry and interest in technologyrelated careers. Students were also required to provide a teacher’s letter of recommendation.
Get in the Game 2024 participants include:
Andria Alexandrou, Oviedo High School
Mya Aris, Lake Brantley High School
Cailey Bolden, Hagerty High School
Valeria Chaves Villamizar, Winter Springs High School
Lucy Chong, Trinity Preparatory School
Caroline Cuda, Winter Park High School
Abigail Davidzon, Timber Creek High School
Gloria Estefanos, Lake Brantley High School

Abigail is an information technology intern at Orange County Public Schools. After graduation, she aspires to attend Full Sail
University to pursue a career in STEAM. She is certified in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro and Unity. In her free time, she enjoys weightlifting, flag football or any other activity that will keep her active.
“My experience at EA Orlando’s Get in the Game STEAM Camp was so rewarding! I learned so much from the fantastic camp staff and coding coaches from EA. I learned about C# coding, motion capture, tech art and software engineering. The experience was so beneficial, informative and valuable. The professionals at EA all utilize their skills and mastery to deliver games, content and online services that we the public enjoy. I am extremely proud and gracious for the opportunity. I could not be happier and prouder to have been a part of this program.”
Get in the Game Alumnae Career Success
Since launching in 2018, the program has become a proven approach to unlocking the potential of Central Florida’s untapped technological talent and growing EA’s inclusive workforce. Five past participants have secured internships at EA and two of those students have now secured full-time positions.
“Participating in last year’s Get in the Game STEAM Camp further fueled my passion for computer science by providing handson experience with game development and coding,” said Alexis Sapp, a 2023 program alumna from Evans High School who will be attending Stanford University this fall. “Additionally, the mentorship and panels of women at EA taking over the technology industry further solidified my decision to major in computer science and helped strengthen my college application. The information and skills I gained during the camp continue to set the tone for my academic and professional journey.”
Alexis and other members of the 2023 cohort will return to EA Orlando July 25 for Get in the Game Alumnae Day, where they will be paired with EA professionals for job shadowing and receive advice on resume writing and internship interviews.

Setting the Stage for Success: Happy Routines and Fun Reads for Back-to-School
As the new school year approaches, it is essential for parents to help their children transition smoothly from the carefree days of summer to the structured routine of school life. Establishing a happy and healthy routine can set the tone for a successful year. Here are some tips and book recommendations to make this transition fun and effective for your elementary-age student.
Establishing a Routine
1. Consistent Bedtime: Ensure your child gets adequate sleep by setting a consistent bedtime. A well-rested child is more attentive and ready to learn.
2. Morning Routine: Create a stress-free morning routine by preparing school clothes and backpacks the night before. Involve your child in picking out their clothes and packing their backpack, as this helps them feel more in control and ready for the day.
3. Making Lunch: Prepare lunch the night before and have your child help. This not only saves time in the morning but also teaches your child responsibility and planning.
4. Homework Time: Dedicate a specific time each day for homework. This helps children develop good study habits and ensures they have ample time to complete assignments.
5. Learning Activities: On days without homework, engage in fun learning activities such as reading, educational games, or creative projects. This keeps the learning momentum and makes education enjoyable.
Fun Back-to-School Books
Reading together is a wonderful way to bond and prepare for the school year. Here are some delightful back-to-school books perfect for elementary-age students:
The Pigeon Has to Go to School! by Mo Willems
This hilarious book addresses common fears about school in a lighthearted way. It is a great read to ease any anxieties your child may have.
If You Ever Want to Bring an Alligator to School, Don’t! by Elise Parsley
A fun and imaginative story that reminds children of the rules and expectations at school through a humorous scenario.
David Goes to School by David Shannon
Follow David as he learns about classroom behavior and the importance of following rules. This book is both entertaining and instructive.
Pete the Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes by James Dean and Eric Litwin
Join Pete the Cat on his first day of school. With catchy songs and a cheerful outlook, Pete shows that school is cool.

Their first delivery will be to Encore at Avalon Park, they are in need about 250 crosses. Advent Health is also eagerly awaiting a few hundred!
We are looking for friends to come and join us help make this possible!
Why are we doing this?
Many sick and elderly people spend many hours each day alone or sad, holding on to the Cross is a sensory and visual reminder that they are not alone, and that Jesus loves them. Comfort to the body and to the soul.
What do we need?
Help:
1. If you know how to crochet or you do not know how, but want to learn, we will teach you! Many hands make for faster work and speedier delivery.
2. if you do not want to crochet but want to help, we will need help typing, copying, cutting and assembling small encouraging Bible verses to the completed crosses .
3. If you want to help but do not have time, we need donations for materials to make the crosses (money, gift cards to craft stores or Amazon)
If you feel moved to share some of your time, talent, and/or treasure,
please email me at sralopez72@gmail.com.
Our hope is to continue this project and take to more hospitals, rehab centers, and other facilities in the area, so if you have any suggestions of other places for us to make and deliver these to, please let me know.

Lighthouse Central Florida’s Early Intervention Program “Brings the Farm” to Local Children
Nearly a dozen young children living with blindness or vision impairment recently had the opportunity to interact with a variety of farm animals – giving them a “handson” sensory experience through touch and sound.
On June 1, Lighthouse Central Florida invited Bella’s Little Farm to its Kunze Avenue location, providing families in the Early Intervention program the chance to pet animals such as chickens, ducks, piglets and goats and listen to the sounds that they make. In addition, the children were able to connect with each other outside of their home environments.
Lighthouse’s Early Intervention program supports families with visually impaired children, ranging in age from newborns to five years. In addition to providing inhome services, Lighthouse coordinators plan activities across Seminole, Orange and Osceola counties throughout the year to encourage community integration.

Orange County Supervisor of Elections Partners with CareerSource Central Florida to Expand Job Training
In a first-of-its-kind partnership, the Orange County Supervisor of Elections has partnered with CareerSource Central Florida to provide job training for more than a dozen young adult interns in everything from data entry to voter outreach efforts, to cybersecurity awareness.
As part of the partnership, as many as sixteen young adult interns from CareerSource Central Florida will earn career training taking on various jobs at the Orange County Supervisor of Elections office as the elections team prepares for the August Primary Election and the November General Election.
“This partnership will not only help support the elections staff but also provide critical job skills that can translate to career opportunities outside the elections office,” said Orange County Supervisor of Elections Glen Gilzean. “When we connect with our community partners, we expand what is possible while at the same time tapping into a workforce that we critically need in this hectic election season.”
As Orange County grows, the Supervisor of Elections Office has aggressively expanded early voting and dayof-voting locations to better serve voters. This growth requires a team of election workers beyond permanent staff during the primary and general elections.

It has been proven to reduce loneliness for 80% of users, while making 90% feel better and 82% stay more mentally active.
“We are on a mission to help older adults live happier, healthier, more independent lives at home through our AI companion ElliQ,” said Dor Skuler, Co-founder and CEO of Intuition Robotics. “We’re proud to work with Senior Resource Alliance to help bring that vision to life
and offer ElliQ to hundreds of eligible older adults in the region free of charge. Karla and her leadership team are pushing the boundaries of innovation within the public sector by combining traditional services such as home delivered meals and community-based services with cutting edge AI technology to improve the quality of lives of our seniors. We are thrilled to be included in such an impressive effort.”
SRA has started deploying its 284 ElliQ machines to the homes of local seniors in Orange, Osceola, Seminole and Brevard counties, which they can use for one year free of charge. Just as the Olympics bring together athletes from around the world, our games unite community members from all walks of life The event, which started with a Torch Run through Avalon Park and a fun-filled Pickleball clinic, saw over 40 participants coming together to celebrate health, fitness, and fun.
A Grand Start with the Torch Run
The Games began with a 5k Torch Run, a relay throughout the community in the spirit of the games. Participants of all ages carried the torch through the heart of Avalon. The route winded through our town.
Pickleball Clinic: Learning and Fun for All Ages
Following the Torch Run, the action moved to the Pickleball courts for a special clinic. Pickleball, a sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and pingpong, has been gaining popularity for its accessibility and fast-paced fun! OUC Named #1 Solar SunRiser for the Southeast
OUC—The Reliable One has earned the designation as the #1 solar “SunRiser” by the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy (SACE) for 2024. This is the sixth consecutive year that SACE has named OUC as a SunRiser among utilities in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.
“Recognition as a leader in advancing solar energy emphasizes our commitment to achieving net zero CO2 emissions by 2050, with interim reductions of 50% by 2030 and 75% by 2040,” said Linda Ferrone, OUC’s Chief Customer & Marketing Officer.
“Getting there requires a combination of sources, including utility-scale solar farms, community solar, panels on customer rooftops and innovative projects like floating solar arrays in retention ponds and other bodies of water.”
SunRisers exhibit the highest “solar ambition” among utilities in the southeast, which is measured by the increase in solar watts per customer (SWPC) ratio between the base year (2023) and the four-year forecast (2027), according to SACE’s Solar in the Southeast 2024 report.
OUC’s participation in the Florida Municipal Solar Project and plans to boost utility-scale solar capacity to more than 270 megawatts (MW) by 2025 played a role in earning the #1 position. SACE’s Solar in the Southeast: Seventh Edition report projects OUC reaching 1,799 SWPC by 2027, an increase of 1,201 SWPC from 2023.
Scheduled to open later this year are two new 74.5 MW solar farms that will more than double OUC’s solar generation
capacity. In addition, the utility will be the sole recipient of the energy generated through a power purchase agreement. Once completed, the combined 271.5 MW of solar capacity will be enough to power 50,000 typical Florida homes.
This fall, OUC is installing the largest floating solar array in the southeastern United States. The 2MW system will be owned and operated by OUC and placed on a retention pond in southeast Orlando. This will be OUC’s third floating solar project.
Solar is the best renewable energy source available in Florida. However, because Central Florida experiences 277 days of partly cloudy weather, OUC is researching and developing battery energy storage systems. Essentially massive batteries, the systems store electricity produced by OUC’s solar arrays for use during cloudy daytime weather or at night. Energy storage is critical to OUC’s efforts to improve the reliability of solar power as the utility moves toward generating more electricity from this renewable source.
About OUC—The Reliable One
For more than 100 years, OUC—The Reliable One has provided exceptional value to its customers and community through the delivery of sustainable and reliable services and solutions. The utility provides electric, water, chilled water, lighting and solar services to more than 400,000 accounts in Orlando, St. Cloud and parts of unincorporated Orange and Osceola counties. As OUC prepares for the next century, it remains committed to a goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 while supporting the Central Florida community with conservation, sustainability and energy efficiency resources.
