Coffee Hour with Beat: Building a Walkable and Accessible Community for All

As we enter the fall season, there’s a lot to appreciate about the beauty of Avalon Park.

From the tree-lined streets to the bustling downtown filled with shops and restaurants, it’s a community designed for convenience and connection.

While having a walkable community is something we have always championed, it’s equally important to focus on accessibility for everyone. A truly great community is one where everyone, regardless of ability, feels welcome and supported.

I am excited to update you on the strides being taken to ensure our community is not only walkable but also accessible to all our residents, whether they’re children, seniors, or those with unique physical challenges. One such example is the incredible work being done by NeuroRestorative, an organization that provides rehabilitation for brain and spinal cord injury patients. Their commitment to improving lives aligns perfectly with our vision for Avalon Park as a place where residents can navigate their surroundings comfortably and independently. Our town’s thoughtful design—with amenities, parks, medical offices, and shopping all within reach—makes it the ideal place for their patients to reintegrate into everyday life.

One of the latest improvements to enhance walkability and accessibility in our community is the county’s installation of new lighted crosswalks by Encore. With our vibrant community of residents of all ages, including many seniors, these crosswalks ensure that everyone can cross safely. The county’s addition of these lighted crosswalks is a testament to our commitment to building an environment where safety and accessibility go hand-in-hand.

We are also proud to support our community partner, an innovative company that’s revolutionizing indoor navigation for individuals with sight impairments. Imagine a system similar to Google Maps but designed for indoor spaces. Polaris’ technology allows users to navigate buildings with real-time guidance, adapting to dynamic changes within the environment. This tool provides a fully guided experience throughout the entirety of a building, whether it’s an office, shopping area, or healthcare facility. In case of emergencies like fires or active shooter events, the system can push dynamic exit routes to users, ensuring their safety.

This kind of forward-thinking technology aligns perfectly with our goal of making Avalon Park a community where all individuals can thrive. By incorporating solutions like Polaris’ indoor navigation system, we’re creating spaces where independence and safety are accessible to everyone.

We often talk about Avalon Park as a walkable community, but it’s more than just being able to stroll down the street to grab a coffee. It’s about making sure every resident, regardless of age or ability, can navigate our community with ease. Whether it’s installing new crosswalks, partnering with organizations like NeuroRestorative, or adopting cuttingedge technology from Polaris, we are committed to a future where Avalon Park serves as a model for inclusivity and accessibility.

So, as you enjoy your coffee and a walk through our beautiful community this month, take pride in knowing that Avalon Park is not just built to be enjoyed, but designed to welcome and support all. That’s what makes us not just a walkable community, but an accessible one for everyone.

Happy October!

As October arrives, fall is now in full swing! It’s a great time to enjoy both indoor and outdoor activities like going for a walk, or just relaxing with family. The hopefully cooler weather makes being outside more comfortable, and the season feels like a mix of fun and calm. It’s a special time to appreciate nature and spend time with the people you care about.

We are at the peak of Hurricane Season, and there are still significant risks of storms forming. Please stay updated on safety precautions and sandbag pickup locations by signing up for updates at OCAlert.net and visit the County’s Emergency Information page at ocfl.net/EmergencySafety/ EmergencyInformation.aspx

October closes the national Hispanic Heritage Month. In commemoration of this, the Hispanic Heritage Network of Orange County is hosting the end of Hispanic heritage month celebration titled Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together. This event will showcase the rich diversity of Hispanic culture we have in Orange County. Delicious food will be provided alongside great entertainment. I encourage everyone interested to attend this event. It will take place from 6pm to 9pm at the Orange County Multicultural Center (7149 W Colonial Dr, Orlando FL 32818) on October 9th. If you are interested in participating, please register at

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, or if you would like to receive my newsletter, you can email me at district4@ocfl.net or call my office at 407-836-5881. You can also meet me in person on the first Wednesdays of the month at the East Orange Community Center (12050 E Colonial Dr) or on the Third Wednesdays of the month at the Meadow Woods Recreation Center (1751 Rhode Island Woods Cir). My time at both locations is from 10am to 12pm. Thank you again and enjoy October!

The Pinecrest Academy Post: Student Stories

Celebrating the incredible journeys of Pinecrest Avalon students! From academic achievements to personal growth, these inspiring stories highlight the passion, dedication, and creativity of our community.

How can I be a community helper? Written by Emily

To start off, we can all be a community helper. At Pinecrest we have a large amount of reasons why and how. I personally love to improve and make a change. To begin we can instead of only having trash, we could also have a recycle bin. We could change all of the things that pollute the community like using cars less and putting trash in the garbage bins. Also, we can make sure that we as a team we reuse all of the paper and other materials as much as we can to create a better environment. We can also donate clothes and toys to the people that need it. This year we will also do the blanket donations. Lastly, we can have a fundraiser to raise money for the people with cancer.

What does a new school year mean? Written by Jaralis

A new school year is when a school starts fresh with new students, new teachers, new staff, and etc. It’s just the school starting fresh. Starting fresh isn’t bad because this year you may like the new teacher and they could become your favorite teacher. After all, trying new things is not so bad. A new year school is to forget about any bad from before and raise your intelligence score, also meaning to get a chance to raise your grades. Raising your grades could be a big income. Leading to the chance to get scholarships when you’re older. Scholarships can be really big, like basically Harvard could give you one, and Harvard is really hard to get into. Getting into Harvard would be a big honor, so being intelligent and getting scholarships would be really helpful. A new school year means new responsibilities, also meaning there are more things added to your list this year because you are older. Being older is a big time responsibility within itself, taking accountability is responsibility. Two important big words, both with great meaning, accountability and responsibility.

Habit 1: Be Proactive Written by Dominic

Habit one is being proactive. Being proactive means being smart and kind. It also means to be holding responsibility for your actions and to be respectful. Being kind is important so people don’t think of you as mean or annoying. Being smart is also very important so you can solve real life problems. Being smart can also be represented in your grades too. Being intelligent could also get you into a program that represents our school. Also, having responsibility is a great factor in becoming a scholar

or student. Responsibility can include turning something in on time or taking accountability for your actions. It also means to be respectful. Being respectful means to have care for everyone and everything around you. Being respectful can also have people give you respect. What does it mean to be a patriot? Written by Sofia I’ve had a long and joyous time at Pinecrest Academy Avalon. Never have I been as proud to be an inaugural student, than at this school. Going through thick and thin might’ve not been easy, but I’ve held strong. To be present at almost every event that has been hosted by this school, has been an honor. Give or take, I’ve been to nearly every yearly show and cultural recognition performances. You will learn from being here just a bit, that If there’s one thing this school does excellent on, it’s creating an event worthwhile. Upping the events every time is a challenge, but our wonderful staff rise to it. Never has there been a year I’ve attended, when the teachers showed nothing but appreciation, genuine and care for their careers, even if they leave later on. Going from our Pinecrest family to take on larger journeys is a hard thing for us students, but it will still remain in my heart, and the hearts of many others who got to know us Patriots. Additionally, the staff is not the only exemplary people in our educational environment. The students, my fellow peers, I’ve grown cooperative friendships and meaningful connections to the kids around me. Although there have been plenty of miscommunications and small conflicts, we’ve powered through to create the best scholars possible.

All about whole body listening Written by Dominic & Pinecrest Post Staff

Whole body listening is when you give your full attention to the person that is speaking. Whole body listening includes the actions of making eye contact, processing all of the information that is given, and facing their direction. Whole body listening is a useful tool that breaks down the tasks involved in listening. Eyes are on the speaker, ears are listening. Mouth is closed, hands are still. Feet are resting and our body is comfortably frozen. This adult-defined expectation may include standing completely still, similar to a soldier at attention. This is not only difficult for most children, but impossible for some. Listening with your whole body involves integrating all of the body senses (sensory processing), and combining that with executive functioning (self-control of brain and body), and perspective taking (thinking of others and what they are saying). This is not an easy task and it’s extremely important to be aware of the processing complexity involved.

2nd Annual Heroes Among Us: A 9/11 Tribute

to Our First Responders

On September 11th, in collaboration with The Wilkins Way Home Team, the Rotary Club of Avalon Park undertook a meaningful service project that honored the spirit of community and heroism. On a day that evokes deep reflection on the tragedy of 9/11, the Rotary Club chose to act in service, bringing together local businesses, volunteers, and sponsors to show appreciation for the first responders who continue to protect our community.

Members of the Rotary Club of Avalon Park and Wilkins Way Home Team volunteers gathered to deliver meals, snacks, and heartfelt cards to several key locations, including to Fire Stations 80, 83, 85, and 87, as well as the Orange County Sheriff’s Office Substation Sector II and the 911 Call Center. The goal was clear: to make a meaningful impact on the first responders who selflessly dedicate their lives to protecting the community. These small tokens of gratitude were a powerful way to acknowledge the vital role they play every day, not just in times of crisis.

Our heartfelt thanks go to all the sponsors who supported this service project. Their generosity and commitment made it possible for us to show our appreciation to the first responders who serve our community every day. Special thanks to Walmart Neighborhood Market, Dunkin Donuts, Pesaro’s Pizzeria & Ristorante, Frito-Lay, Publix, Sunrise Elementary School, and Girl Scout Troop 608 for their contributions. That kind of support truly helped make a difference, and we are grateful for your partnership in honoring these heroes.

This service project, coinciding with the anniversary of 9/11, held a special significance. It was a remembrance of those lost and a celebration of the enduring bravery and humanity demonstrated by first responders. It was a chance to say “thank you” to the people who place their lives on the line every day, keeping our neighborhoods safe.

Looking ahead, the Rotary Club of Avalon Park is dedicated to maintaining this tradition of service and gratitude. The unwavering dedication of first responders will continue to be recognized, ensuring their sacrifices are never forgotten.
