“The right to vote is the basic right without which all others are meaningless. It gives people, people as individuals, control over their own destinies.” And, in the words of the late former President Franklin D. Roosevelt, “Nobody will ever deprive the American people of the right to vote except the American people themselves, and the only way they could do this is by not voting.”

There is some good news on voter turnout: the 2020 presidential election had the highest turnout (around 66%) since 1900! And with the numbers coming in from early voting, the 2024 voter turnout is looking just promising. It is showing that, by and large, the American people treasure the right to vote.

of the last presidential election’s voter turnout—currently about 900,000 signatures in Florida. In Switzerland, you can get anything on a federal level on the ballot by collecting 100,000 signatures, or trigger a nationwide referendum to reverse a decision made by the national parliament with just 50,000 signatures. This is why, in Switzerland, there’s almost always some vote or election to participate in.

And while presidential elections in the US are on everyone’s mind (and around the globe, in fact), let’s not forget that there are numerous state and local positions, along with amendments, to be voted on. Washington is important, but what happens right in our own backyard is just as crucial—if not more so.

So, I encourage you, no matter how you vote, PLEASE VOTE and exercise your most basic right.

Happy November!

With the start of November, the holiday season is rapidly approaching. This Thanksgiving, we gather to give thanks for the blessings in our lives, sharing meals with loved ones and cherishing the warmth of togetherness. It’s a time when we embrace traditions that remind us of the importance of gratitude. It’s a month that bridges the gap between autumn’s fading beauty and winter’s arrival, inviting us to appreciate the beauty of both seasons.

Election Day is rapidly approaching. The election will take place on Tuesday, November 5th. You can go to https://ocfelections.com/ early-voting to find the early voting site closest to you. Early Voting will continue every day from 8am to 8pm until Sunday November 3rd. On Election Day, you must vote in your assigned polling place based on your address. Please visit ocfelections.gov and click on “Find my Polling Place” and enter your

Hurricane Season will continue until November 30th, and there are still significant risks of storms forming. Please stay updated on safety precautions and sandbag pickup locations by signing up for updates at OCAlert.net and visit the County’s Emergency Information page at ocfl.net/EmergencySafety/ EmergencyInformation.aspx

Lights On For Children: Shining a Light on Child Trafficking Awareness in November

Did you know that Florida ranks third in the nation for calls to the human trafficking hotline, and Orange County is second in the state for child trafficking cases? These alarming statistics highlight a critical need for action and awareness, which is why Paving the Way Foundation is stepping up to disrupt the cycle of exploitation through education and empowerment. This November, in partnership with Avalon Park Group, Paving the Way Foundation is hosting Lights On For Children, a month-long awareness campaign and fundraiser leading up to World Children’s Day on November 20th. The initiative aims to bring the community together to shine a light on the darkness of child trafficking, empowering children and families with the tools they need to stay safe.

Dress code is dressy casual, and your participation will make a significant impact on the lives of local youth.

Throughout November, the Avalon Park Arts and Culture Center will display the Lights On For Children Art Exhibit, featuring artwork inspired by Paving the Way’s educational programs. Community members are encouraged to visit the exhibit, which runs from November 1st to November 20t*, to learn more about child trafficking awareness through the eyes of young artists.

The Artist Reception will be held on Wednesday, November 20th, and offers an opportunity to meet the artists and support the cause. We also encourage residents to show solidarity by

lighting up their homes and businesses with blue lightbulbs for the month of November.

Easy Ways to Decorate for Fall:

Let’s face it, Fall in Florida is still, unfortunately HOT. We are dependent on the calendar to tell when each season begins and ends. The pumpkin spice latte and aisles in Hobby Lobby try to convince us Floridians that fall is near, but the sweat rolling down my back tells me otherwise. Even if I have to set out my pumpkins with the A/C on, I like to celebrate fall in our home with some simple decorations. I don’t like to store too much stuff, so I try to use things we already have around or can easily recycle after fall is over. Here are some easy ways to decorate for fall, even if the AC is still on!

1. Change Out Your Pillows

An easy way to announce that fall is here is by switching out your pillows. Cozier fabrics and fall-themed colors or sayings will immediately make your house seem more festive. I just love the buffalo check trend right now, and I can easily see these transitioning into Christmas.

2. Do Something With All Those Sticks Your

Toddler Brings Inside

It’s not just my toddler, right? We always have sticks she has deemed interesting enough to hang onto in our house. I can’t blame her; sticks and small branches can be beautiful and full of character. Display those sticks in a lovely way this season.

3. Add a Wreath

Since we don’t get the yellow, orange, and red fall leaves that usually adorn the classic fall wreaths, some beautiful eucalyptus still keeps the fall vibe while staying true to our still-green natural color palette. Picking an asymmetrical shape adds another modern touch.

4. Little Pumpkins Everywhere

Cute pumpkins arranged in vignettes around the house shouts “FALL IS HERE EVERYONE” about as loudly as possible. You can choose modern white pumpkins, classic orange, or let your kids decorate them with paint, glue and paper, or even wax drippings.

5. Change Out Your Artwork

Perhaps the easiest of all, changing out your framed artwork can make a surprising difference in the feeling of your home. This is one of my favorite ways to decorate because it takes up exactly zero extra space and is easy to store or recycle once the season is over. Here are some free printables to make your walls look more fall.

November: A Month of Gratitude and Family Fun

November is here, and with it comes the perfect opportunity to embrace the spirit of Thanksgiving. This season is all about togetherness, making memories, and cherishing the moments spent with family. Whether it’s exploring the outdoors or sharing what you’re thankful for, there are endless ways to celebrate as a family. Let’s kick off the month with some fun, educational activities that everyone can enjoy!

1. Visit a Local Pumpkin Patch

Nothing says fall like a trip to a pumpkin patch! Wander through the rows of pumpkins and make a game out of counting how many you can find together. For a creative twist, start a “Pumpkin Photo Library” on your phone, snapping pictures of each pumpkin you spot. Young children will love counting pumpkins while building their observation and math skills. Plus, the photos will make for a fun family album!

Book Recommendation: How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin? by Margaret McNamara – A great companion to your pumpkin adventures, this book is a fun and educational read about counting and problem-solving.

2. Create a Jar of Thanksgiving

This heartfelt activity encourages gratitude all month long. As a family, decorate a jar with fallthemed art supplies, turning it into your “Jar of Thanksgiving.” Each day, take turns writing down something you’re thankful for on a strip of paper and explain why. At the end of the month, read

them together during your Thanksgiving dinner— it’s a beautiful way to reflect on your blessings.

Book Recommendation: The Thankful Book by Todd Parr – A colorful, uplifting book that will inspire your family to appreciate the little things in life.

3. Take a Family Walk and Observe Seasonal Changes

Florida may not have the typical four seasons, but there’s still magic to be found in the subtle signs of fall. Take a family walk to see how the weather and landscape change. Can you spot leaves changing color or feel the crispness in the air? Enjoy nature while teaching your kids to appreciate the beauty of the outdoors and observe the world around them.

Book Recommendation: Fletcher and the Falling Leaves by Julia Rawlinson – This charming story follows a little fox as he experiences the changes in the fall season, perfect for setting the mood on your nature walk.

4. Host a Family ‘Thanksgiving Bake-Off’ Bring the kitchen alive with delicious smells by hosting a family bake-off! Choose a simple Thanksgiving recipe—like pumpkin bread or apple pie—and split into teams. Young kids can help with mixing, stirring, and decorating. At the end, have a taste test to determine the winning dish, or better yet, declare everyone a winner and enjoy the fruits of your labor together. Cooking as a family is a fun way to teach kids about measurements and following instructions while creating delicious memories.

Book Recommendation: Balloons Over Broadway: The True Story of the Puppeteer of Macy’s Parade by Melissa Sweet – A beautifully illustrated book that celebrates creativity and Thanksgiving traditions.

WORK

Navigating Entrepreneurship During the Holiday Season: How to Stay Productive and Enjoy the Festivities

The holiday season is an exciting time, but for entrepreneurs, it can be a challenging period to stay on top of work while juggling the holiday rush. Between year-end deadlines, customer demands, and the festivities, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. However, with a few mindful strategies, you can stay productive, meet your goals, and still make time to enjoy the season. Here’s how to thrive as an entrepreneur during the holidays.

1. Prioritize Your Tasks and Set Clear Goals

During the holidays, time management is critical. Start by prioritizing your work tasks by urgency and importance. Focus on high-impact tasks that can drive your business forward, like sales strategies, client outreach, or key deadlines. If you’re able to break these down into achievable daily goals, you’ll avoid feeling swamped and can celebrate small victories every day.

Tip: Consider using a project management tool, like Trello or Asana, to keep track of daily tasks and progress. Writing down goals and checking them off brings structure and reduces the feeling of chaos.

2. Leverage Seasonal Opportunities

The holiday season can bring unique business opportunities for entrepreneurs, from increased sales to client outreach. Brainstorm ways to capitalize on the festive period. Could you offer holiday promotions, special products, or exclusive services? Seasonal marketing campaigns can attract customers and create a memorable experience, boosting brand loyalty as you head into the new year.

Tip: Plan your holiday marketing early to avoid last-minute stress. Consider email campaigns, social media posts, or collaborations with other businesses to expand your reach.

3. Delegate and Use Automation Tools

Entrepreneurs often wear many hats, but the holiday season is an ideal time to delegate. If you have a team, trust them to handle some of your responsibilities. Identify areas where automation can help, too, such as scheduling social media posts, setting up automatic email responses, or using invoicing software. Automating repetitive tasks frees you up to focus on strategic areas of your business.

Tip: Try tools like Hootsuite for social media scheduling or Zapier to automate tasks between apps. This way, you can save time while ensuring consistent engagement with customers.

4. Manage Client Expectations Early

Communication is key, especially during the holidays. Be proactive with your clients by informing them

of any adjusted hours, anticipated delays, or cut-off dates for project completion. Setting expectations early shows professionalism and can help reduce stress, especially if your industry experiences high demand during the holiday season.

Tip: Send out a friendly email or update your website with holiday hours or response time adjustments to keep everyone on the same page.

5. Establish Boundaries and Schedule Personal Time

As an entrepreneur, it’s tempting to work around the clock, but burnout is a real risk. The holidays are an opportunity to recharge and spend time with loved ones, so be intentional about setting work boundaries. Block off time in your calendar for family, relaxation, and holiday activities. Setting limits on your availability can help you stay balanced and prevent holiday burnout.

Tip: Use the “Do Not Disturb” feature on your phone or silence notifications during designated break times. A rested mind is often more creative and productive.

6. Reflect on the Year and Plan for the Next The end of the year is a great time to evaluate your business progress. Reflect on the past year’s achievements, lessons learned, and areas for improvement. This not only provides a sense of accomplishment but also allows you to set realistic goals for the upcoming year. Having a clear direction helps you start the new year with momentum.

Tip: Block out a couple of hours to do a year-end review. List out your top accomplishments, identify key challenges, and outline a few strategic goals for the next year.

Being an entrepreneur during the holidays can be challenging, but with the right approach, it’s possible to balance work with the festivities. By prioritizing tasks, leveraging seasonal opportunities, automating where possible, and setting boundaries, you can keep your business running smoothly while still enjoying the holiday spirit. Remember, the end of the year is not only a time to drive sales but also a time to celebrate how far you’ve come.

At The 5th Floor Orlando, we are here to celebrate a year of hard work with you and help you prepare for another one! If you are looking for office space, a virtual office or a hot desk to call home for your business, visit us today at The5thFloorOrlando.com or call us (407) 730-3493.

Goodwill Partners with 2nd Mountain Homes to Better Prepare Youth in Foster Care for Independent Living

Goodwill Industries of Central Florida recently launched a new partnership with 2nd Mountain Homes to provide hands-on job training opportunities for young adults transitioning out of foster care.

The “Transitioning Youth” initiative targets an ongoing need in our community: Research shows that older youth exiting the child welfare system often experience educational and vocational difficulties. Through the new collaboration, Goodwill aims to equip participants with essential job skills and employability training necessary to succeed in adulthood.

“For 65 years, Goodwill’s mission has been about helping neighbors achieve their personal and professional goals,” said Ed Durkee, President and CEO at Goodwill Industries of Central Florida. “Thanks to our partnership with 2nd Mountain Homes, these young adults will have the opportunity to attain new job skills while gaining authentic work experience – but above that, we hope Goodwill can help them achieve their future goals.”

During the 90-day experience the “Transitioning Youth” work one-on-one with specialists who help them identify and plan personal goals; connect them with resources to help achieve their goals (such as additional training or employment opportunities); and regularly check in with them to evaluate their progress.

“Our partnership with Goodwill is already making

a significant impact in the lives of the ‘Transitioning Youths,’” said Lorvins Eugene, Founder and President of 2nd Mountain Homes. “As someone with firsthand experience facing trauma, I know the profound impact of working with someone who believes in your abilities. This program not only provides our young men with invaluable training, but also builds their sense of selfworth.”

All Goodwill programs, including the new “Transitioning Youths” initiative, are made possible through donations from community members. Revenue earned through the sales of gently used items finances the organization’s employment placement and job skills training services.

For more information about Goodwill, its job programs and how to apply to work at the organization, visit www. GoodwillCFL.org

About Goodwill Industries of Central Florida, Inc. (GICF)

For 65 years, Goodwill Industries of Central Florida has provided vocational and job placement services to tens of thousands of people living in Central Florida. Through 31 retail/outlet stores and 18 Donation Xpress locations in Orange, Seminole, Osceola, Brevard, Lake and Volusia counties, Goodwill diverted nearly 24 million pounds of clothing and household items from landfills in 2023. Goodwill Industries of Central Florida directly channels more than 90 percent of its annual revenue into programs that enable individuals to secure meaningful employment, achieve their personal goals and thrive economically.

Arthur “Pappy” Kennedy Prayer Breakfast Organizers Welcome High School Seniors to Apply for its Annual Scholarship

Each year scholarships are awarded to local high school seniors from BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color) who demonstrate exemplary academic success, leadership and community service at the Arthur “Pappy” Kennedy Prayer Breakfast. Applications for the scholarship are open now through Nov. 8 to qualifying students.

“Scholarships are a life-changing opportunity giving support and alleviating some of the financial burden that low-income students face when obtaining higher education,” said Kevin Bolding, president and CEO of YMCA of Central Florida. “The Arthur “Pappy” Kennedy Scholarship creates an equitable opportunity for students who need the support to receive a valuable education.”

Qualified students will hold an overall GPA of 2.5 or higher, submit two letters of recommendation and a 500-750 word typed essay. Additionally, these students actively participate in school leadership, extracurricular activities and have a strong volunteer service record.

Scholarship recipients will be recognized at the Arthur Pappy Kennedy Prayer Breakfast hosted by the Pappy Kennedy Family, Southwest Orlando Jaycees, City of Orlando MLK Commission and the YMCA of Central

Florida on Monday, Jan. 20, 2025. This occasion celebrates the scholarship recipients, sponsors, and the impact of Arthur “Pappy” Kennedy in our community as the first African-American City Council member in Orlando. Scholarships of up to $2,000 will be awarded to minority high school seniors attending accredited post-secondary institutions, trade schools, certificate programs and other higher education opportunities in Fall 2025, helping cover expenses associated with these programs.

Statewide Program Provides Free, Unbiased Insurance Counseling for Medicare Beneficiaries

Senior Resource Alliance is reminding residents that their Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders (SHINE) Program has specifically-trained counselors to help educate and empower Medicare beneficiaries, their families, and caregivers to understand their health care options so they can make the best decisions for their individual needs during the Open Enrollment Period (OEP). During OEP, beneficiaries can change their Medicare Prescription Drug or Medicare Advantage plan to affect things like cost, coverage, drug formularies, in-network providers, and pharmacies.

“Medicare can be a daunting subject for most people and the Open Enrollment Period only runs from Oct. 15, 2024, through Dec. 7, 2024, but you don’t have to go it alone! During this time, lean on our experts for advice and utilize a local, valuable resource by connecting with the SHINE program,” said Karla Radka, President and CEO.

SHINE is a program of the Florida Department of Elder

Affairs and is operated locally through Senior Resource Alliance. The SHINE mission is to provide free and unbiased information about Medicare and Medicaid for beneficiaries, their families, and caregivers. SHINE also educates beneficiaries to protect, detect, and report potential errors, fraud, and abuse with their Medicare coverage. SHINE strongly encourages beneficiaries to be on the lookout for their Annual Notice of Change (ANOC), which they should receive from their plan no later than Sept. 30, 2024. Reviewing their benefits and evaluating their health care options each year is vitally important for beneficiaries. Acting quickly can assure a smooth transition into the 2025 benefit year.

To receive help from SHINE, individuals may call to schedule appointments at designated SHINE counseling sites, attend enrollment events in their local communities, or arrange to speak with a trained SHINE counselor at 1-800-96-ELDER (1-800-963-5337).
