Building a Walkable and Accessible Community for All

shops and restaurants, it’s a community designed for convenience and connection. While having a walkable community is something we have always championed, it’s equally important to focus on accessibility for everyone. A truly great community is one where everyone, regardless of ability, feels welcome and supported.

I am excited to update you on the strides being taken to ensure our community is not only walkable but also accessible to all our residents, whether they’re children, seniors, or those with unique physical challenges. One such example is the incredible work being done by NeuroRestorative, an organization that provides rehabilitation for brain and spinal cord injury patients. Their commitment to improving lives aligns perfectly with our vision for Avalon Park as a place where residents can navigate their surroundings comfortably and independently. Our town’s thoughtful design—with amenities, parks, medical offices, and shopping all within reach—makes it the ideal place for their patients to reintegrate into everyday life.

One of the latest improvements to enhance walkability and accessibility in our community is the county’s installation of new lighted crosswalks by Encore. With our vibrant community of residents of all ages, including many seniors, these crosswalks ensure that everyone can cross safely. The county’s addition of these lighted crosswalks is a testament to our commitment to building an environment where safety and accessibility go hand-in-hand.

We are also proud to support our community partner, Polaris, an innovative company that’s revolutionizing indoor navigation for individuals with sight impairments. Imagine a system similar to Google Maps but designed for indoor spaces. Polaris’ technology allows users to navigate

the system can push dynamic exit routes to users, ensuring their safety.

This kind of forward-thinking technology aligns perfectly with our goal of making Avalon Park a community where all individuals can thrive. By incorporating solutions like Polaris’ indoor navigation system, we’re creating spaces where independence and safety are accessible to everyone.

We often talk about Avalon Park as a walkable community, but it’s more than just being able to stroll down the street to grab a coffee. It’s about making sure every resident, regardless of age or ability, can navigate our community with ease. Whether it’s installing new crosswalks, partnering with organizations like NeuroRestorative, or adopting cutting-edge technology from Polaris, we are committed to a future where Avalon Park serves as a model for inclusivity and accessibility.

So, as you enjoy your coffee and a walk through our beautiful community this month, take pride in knowing that Avalon Park is not just built to be enjoyed, but designed to welcome and support all. That’s what makes us not just a walkable community, but an accessible one for everyone.

Funding Available for Central Florida Seniors in Need of Energy Bill Assistance

As temperatures in Central Florida remain hot, there’s some relief for local seniors who are struggling to pay their energy bills. Residents aged 60 or older who live in Orange, Osceola, Seminole and Brevard counties may be eligible for up to $5,000 of assistance through the Emergency Home Energy Assistance for the Elderly Program (EHEAP), which helps qualifying seniors pay energy bills in an emergency. The program is 100% federally funded through a grant by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and seniors can now apply for the 2024-2025 funds.

Senior Resource Alliance (SRA), Central Florida’s Area Agency on Aging, oversees EHEAP applications and the distribution of funds in Orange, Osceola, Brevard and Seminole counties. The agency has distributed more than $450,000 in energy bill assistance since August 2023.

“Central Florida seniors face added challenges in the summer months as temperatures rise and drive-up energy costs,” said Karla Radka, President and CEO of SRA. “In the face of inflation, it’s crucial that seniors are aware that there is help available to them.”

Qualifications for EHEAP eligibility in Central Florida include:

- Applicants must be age 60 or older and reside in a home located in Orange, Seminole, Osceola or Brevard County.

- Proof of residence, such as a driver’s license or other identification. (The energy bill does not need to be in the elder’s name.)

- Applicant must be experiencing a home energy crisis, such as disconnection, delinquency or past due bills.

- Applicants are “categorically eligible” if they can provide proof of TANF, SSI or SNAP benefits, such as an award letter,

in addition to documentation of total household income.

In addition to financial assistance with energy bills, EHEAP funds can be used for purchasing summer necessities, such as portable fans and window air conditioners. Benefits can also be used for repairs to an existing heating/cooling unit, deposits to connect or restore energy, late fees and disconnect/ reconnect fees, as well as other energy-related actions.

EHEAP applications are being processed directly by three SRA partner agencies: Osceola Council on Aging in Osceola and Orange counties; Meals on Wheels, Etc., in Seminole County; and Brevard Alzheimer’s Foundation in Brevard County. Those interested in applying should contact the Osceola Council on Aging at (407) 846-8532; Meals on Wheels, Etc., at (407) 333-8877; or Brevard Alzheimer’s Foundation at (321) 253-4430. For more information about SRA and its services, please visit SeniorResourceAlliance.org

About Senior Resource Alliance

SRA works in partnership with nine partner agencies, including the Alzheimer’s & Dementia Resource Center, Aging Matters in Brevard, Brevard Alzheimer’s Association, Informed Families, Legal Aid Society of the Orange County Bar Association, Inc., Meals on Wheels, Etc., Seniors First, Share the Care and Osceola Council on Aging. The agency is the local resource for accessing the many services and programs of the state and federal government available to senior citizens, their caregivers and family members. SRA is also an objective clearinghouse for information and services offered by local, state and national organizations. For more information, visit SeniorResourceAlliance.org

Free Will & POA

Can I Make My Own Will or nominate a Power of Attorney or create an Advance Healthcare Directive & HIPAA Authorization in Florida? Yes. Florida residents can create their own will or POA without an attorney. If you know who you want to handle your estate, what assets you have and who you want to receive those assets, you are ready to make a will. Aligning with our core values, Avalon Park residence can create their Last Will and Power of Attorney for free, self-help, at your own time and comfort of your home.

1. Fill out a self-guided form online

2. Print your document

3. Sign and Keep Safe

A last will and testament in Florida directs asset distribution, appoints a personal representative, and provides for minor children’s guardianship, and must be reviewed periodically to maintain validity, especially due to Florida’s non-recognition of handwritten wills.

A Durable Financial Power of Attorney is a document that lets you appoint someone to manage your finances for you if you ever become unable to do so for yourself. The name is made up of three parts: First, the authority you grant to your agent is called the “power of attorney.” Second, a “financial” power of attorney is one that grants authority over financial matters; it is different from a “healthcare” power of attorney, for example, which grants authority to make medical decisions. Finally, a “durable” power of attorney is one that remains in effect even after its creator becomes physically or mentally incapacitated.

We are United States Mobile Notary Publics, public officials who notarize legal documents, notarize your will and provide apostille services at Avalon Park. A notary is required to make your will self-proving. When a will is self-proving, it can be admitted to probate without needing your witnesses’ testimony, which can speed up the process. If you need a notary or local attorney, we are at 3564 Avalon Park E Blvd Ste 1.

There is no reason to not have a will when it is free to create. Get a piece of mind. Create yours now!

2nd Annual Heroes Among Us: A 9/11 Tribute to Our First Responders

On September 11th, in collaboration with The Wilkins Way Home Team, the Rotary Club of Avalon Park undertook a meaningful service project that honored the spirit of community and heroism. On a day that evokes deep reflection on the tragedy of 9/11, the Rotary Club chose to act in service, bringing together local businesses, volunteers, and sponsors to show appreciation for the first responders who continue to protect our community.

Members of the Rotary Club of Avalon Park and Wilkins Way Home Team volunteers gathered to deliver meals, snacks, and heartfelt cards to several key locations, including to Fire Stations 80, 83, 85, and 87, as well as the Orange County Sheriff’s Office Substation Sector II and the 911 Call Center. The goal was clear: to make a meaningful impact on the first responders who selflessly dedicate their lives to protecting the community. These small tokens of gratitude were a powerful way to acknowledge the vital role they play every day, not just in times of crisis.

Our heartfelt thanks go to all the sponsors who supported this service project. Their generosity and commitment made it possible for us to show our appreciation to the first responders who serve our community every day. Special thanks to Walmart Neighborhood Market, Dunkin Donuts, Pesaro’s Pizzeria & Ristorante, Frito-Lay, Publix, Sunrise Elementary School, and Girl Scout Troop 608 for their contributions. That kind of support truly helped make a difference, and we are grateful for your partnership in honoring these heroes.

This service project, coinciding with the anniversary of 9/11, held a special significance. It was a remembrance of those lost and a celebration of the enduring bravery and humanity demonstrated by first responders. It was a chance to say “thank you” to the people who place their lives on the line every day, keeping our neighborhoods safe.

Looking ahead, the Rotary Club of Avalon Park is dedicated to maintaining this tradition of service and gratitude. The unwavering dedication of first responders will continue to be recognized, ensuring their sacrifices are never forgotten.

About us:

You are invited to join them each week at the Avalon Pavilion at 7:30 a.m. located at 13401 Tanya King Blvd. Meet your neighbors, find out what Rotary is about and how you can Serve to change lives. For more information click on this link: Take Me There!

Fall into Fall with Fun Books and Not-So-Scary Halloween Stories!

Fall is here, and it’s the perfect time to “fall” into some great books! While we may not need those big winter coats or snow boots here in Florida, the cooler breezes and changing colors still make it the ideal season to cozy up with a good story. Whether it’s in the shade of a palm tree or at home with a fun fall activity, let’s explore some ways families can enjoy reading together this season!

Not-So-Scary Halloween Stories

Halloween is right around the corner, and who doesn’t love a fun story with just a hint of spookiness? These not-so-scary tales are the right mix of excitement and laughter, perfect for young readers.

Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson (Ages 3-7):

This delightful story about a kind witch and her animal friends is perfect for a family read-aloud. The rhymes and teamwork in this book will have everyone smiling!

The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything by Linda Williams (Ages 4-8): Follow the little old lady as she walks through the woods, encountering silly, spooky objects. This lighthearted tale will keep kids engaged without being too spooky.

Creepy Carrots! by Aaron Reynolds (Ages 4-8): Jasper the rabbit thinks he’s being followed by creepy carrots, but it turns into a fun and surprising story! It’s a perfect mix of silly and spooky that will have everyone laughing.

Fall-Themed Family Reading Activities

Reading can be part of so many fun fall activities! Here are a few ways to make reading a memorable family event this season:

Pumpkin Patch Storytime: Head out to a local pumpkin patch and pick out your pumpkins for the season. While you’re there, gather around for a story like Too Many Pumpkins by Linda White (Ages 4-8), or read your favorite fall book when you get home with a cold apple cider (we’re in Florida, after all!).

Book-Themed Scavenger Hunt: Create a scavenger hunt based on your child’s favorite story. Hide little clues or themed items around the house, like pumpkins for The Scarecrow” by Beth Ferry (Ages 4-8). After the hunt, settle in for some family reading time.

DIY Halloween Bookmarks: Let the kids get crafty by making fall or Halloween-themed bookmarks! Pumpkins, ghosts, and leaves are all easy shapes to decorate with markers, stickers, and glitter. Use your new bookmarks in your favorite fall reads!

Fall is a great time to connect as a family through the power of stories. From pumpkin patch adventures to cozy reading nights, reading together can create lasting memories and spark a love of books in children.

Happy reading!

Proven Strategies for More Effectively Managing Remote Teams

Managing a remote workforce calls for a thoughtful approach to maintaining connection, productivity, and engagement. By implementing certain strategies, you can create a more cohesive team that thrives, regardless of location. Courtesy of The 5th Floor, here are several strategies for effectively managing remote employees so that they feel connected, valued, and closely aligned with your company’s goals.

Foster Team Connection

Creating virtual social events brings remote employees together and fosters a deeper sense of community. Encourage informal chats to build relationships and maintain connections like in-office interactions. Promote a culture of open and honest communication where remote employees genuinely feel like they’re part of the team. This sense of belonging is crucial for engagement and morale. Virtual coffee breaks and team-building games enhance camaraderie.

Use Effective Tools

Utilizing software and tools for project management, time tracking, and collaboration streamlines work processes and enhances productivity. These tools provide structure and clarity, ensuring everyone knows what needs to be done and when. Integrating these technologies creates a more organized workflow, making it easier for remote employees to stay on track. Practical tools facilitate better coordination and task management across your entire remote team.

Hire the Right People

Seek employees comfortable working from home or a satellite office. Supervisors experienced in leading remote teams make a significant difference. If your business operates in a niche industry, hire someone with specific hard skills. Consider a first hire who can train others, contributing to a stronger team. Effective hiring practices ensure you build a resilient and adaptable workforce, fostering long-term success for your remote team.

Provide Constructive Feedback

Offering constructive feedback and recognizing the achievements of remote employees helps maintain motivation and performance. Acknowledge the challenges

of remote work and encourage a healthy work-life balance. Recognition and feedback are powerful tools for keeping employees engaged and valued, boosting overall team morale and productivity. Regular performance reviews and spontaneous praise are used to keep the feedback loop active and meaningful.

Promote Healthy Boundaries

Recognizing the challenges of remote work in terms of work-life balance is crucial. Encourage employees to maintain healthy boundaries between work and personal life. This can include setting specific work hours and taking regular breaks. By supporting a balanced approach, you help prevent burnout and ensure your team remains productive and satisfied with their work environment. Promote practices like setting up a dedicated workspace and regular exercise to enhance this balance.

Implement Communication Tools

Implementing various communication tools such as video conferencing, instant messaging, and project management software ensures clear and consistent communication among team members. These tools help bridge the gap created by physical distance and enable real-time collaboration and feedback. Effective communication is the backbone of a successful remote team. Encourage the use of platforms that facilitate both formal and informal interactions.

Schedule Regular Meetings

Scheduling regular meetings for the entire team and oneon-one sessions keeps everyone aligned and provides opportunities for team members to voice concerns or suggestions. These meetings ensure everyone stays on the same page and can address any issues promptly. Regular check-ins also foster a sense of routine and accountability within the team. Use these meetings to reinforce goals, celebrate successes, and discuss challenges openly.

Define Roles Clearly

Clearly defining each team member’s roles, responsibilities, and expectations is critical for remote work success. Confusion and overlap are reduced when everyone knows their specific duties and how they contribute to the larger goals. This clarity helps streamline processes and ensures everyone works efficiently towards the same objectives. Documenting and making these roles accessible can prevent misunderstandings and enhance team cohesion.

Creating a successful remote team requires careful planning and the right tools. By fostering a sense of community, providing constructive feedback, and ensuring clear communication, you can lead your remote workforce to achieve outstanding results. Embrace these strategies to build a productive, motivated, and aligned remote team that drives your business forward.

What is Peak Demand, and How Does It Affect Me?

It’s a scene played out in thousands of Central Florida households. It’s 3 p.m. and your kids are getting home from school. You arrive a couple of hours later. Inside, your lights are on, computers and TVs are in use, you begin cooking dinner, and the A/C is running at full blast to cool your home. Mind you, all of this happens during the hottest part of the day. Welcome to peak demand!

Simply put, peak demand is when consumer demand for electricity is at its highest. Summer peaks typically occur on days when temperatures are not lowered with afternoon thunderstorms and cloud cover, while winter peaks occur during cold, early morning hours before the sun has fully risen.

At OUC, we typically see electricity usage peak during the summer between 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., while winter peaks occur from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. Electricity is generated, transmitted and distributed as needed. And while OUC is piloting a utility-scale battery energy storage system that can help save electricity captured via solar, capturing and storing mass amounts of electricity remains a challenge from an economic standpoint.

So, you may be wondering how OUC balances this demand with our supply and what you can do. Reducing your use during peak times can have a beneficial effect on electric rates over time. OUC is a municipal utility, which means the costs of operating the electric system are paid for by our customers. As a result, we want to do all we can to keep the grid affordable. By collectively shifting our habits, we can avoid the need for OUC to start up additional power plants, buy more expensive power from the market, or build new, costly generation facilities to produce electricity.

Shifting the demand for electricity costs nothing, and small changes can have a big impact. It can be as simple as setting your air conditioner to 78 degrees or higher, or even waiting until late evening to run laundry, the dishwasher or a pool pump.

OUC recently announced proposed plans for Shift & Save, a time-of-day billing program, which incentivizes customers to shift the bulk of their energy consumption to off-peak times. While the program won’t be available until 2026 (if approved

by OUC’s Board of Commissioners), it’s a change from the traditional one-size-fits-all approach to billing and will give you more control over your electric bill. In exchange for paying lower rates for off-peak energy consumption, Shift & Save customers will pay a higher rate for electricity used during peak demand hours. While it may seem like the program is a long way off, by starting new habits today, you will be ready to save when the program goes into full effect.

So, what can you do now to help reduce your demand on the grid while saving money at the same time? Try some of these tips:

• Set your A/C to 78 degrees or higher. Every degree below 78 degrees adds 6-8% more to your cooling costs. Remember, your A/C can account for over 50% of your bill because it can run twice as long in warmer months to keep your home cool as it does throughout the rest of the year.

• Change A/C filters regularly and have annual maintenance performed so your unit runs efficiently. If you need assistance, check out OUC’s Preferred Contractor Network.

• A smart thermostat can minimize cooling costs when you’re away and ensures maximum comfort on your return.

• Using an oven to prepare food can warm your home. When possible, consider using a grill, microwave, air fryer or toaster oven when preparing food.

• Use vent fans in bathrooms and kitchens to remove humidity at the source.

• If you have a pool, set the timer so the pump runs overnight.

• Charge your electric vehicle overnight, not when you get home from work.

• Use large appliances – dishwasher, clothes dryer, washing machine – early in the morning or later in the evening. If the appliance has a delayed start feature, set it.

• Replace aging appliances with ENERGY STAR® models. If your refrigerator is more than 10 years old, that’s a great place to start.

Gifts for the Grieving

January 22, 2023 is the day that moved me, my name is James Chonody I am a 72 year old street and studio artist in the Orlando area. I am a retired Engineer and former alcoholic/addict who discovered recovery and sobriety in painting. The date mentioned is the day I met Jacklynn Stroz (now Jacklynn Cooley Stroz) at Avalon Art center where I was painting and showing, she pulled up to look at my work, she said her son would have wanted her to look at what I was doing because he was always with her. She proceeded to tell me that her son was killed recently in a tragic DUI accident almost killing her daughter and ex-husband. I told her I felt for her being a former alcoholic and was thankful I never hurt anybody. We were both moved by each other’s stories, we agreed on I would do a portrait of her son for her. The next morning I finished the portrait and sent her a photo knowing she was on her way to work, with the message “Good morning mother”.

She was very moved, and we became friends. Soon she told others, who came to me, that I did portraits of their late children. About 4 months ago I saw a Facebook posting by one of the mothers I had done a portrait for, she was having a very difficult time, when I realized that this would be a lifelong journey for these families. That’s when I decided to do this Pro Bono in a way, for the good of the families.

I have done 25 portraits since starting this personal charity. I see no end to what I can do, I am what is called alla prima (one effort) painter therefore I am very fast at what I do, in 5 years of painting I have painted approx 2300 paintings. I insist on hearing each family’s story, I think that’s important to understand my subject. I love doing this, and sharing my gift in a way that is more satisfying than awards and ribbons. I paint to create beauty from my hands. This is a personal journey for me, part of my healing process from my past. It is also intended to make me one of the best portrait artists I could ever be, by painting real true human beings.

From some of the mothers,

This sweet man! I’ll never forgot pulling into Avalon park near the Avalon Eatery about 3 years ago and feeling the strong sense from my son, Mikey (just months after he was tragically killed) that I needed to go and see these paintings that were on the side of the road set up as a display. I walked and looked at each one knowing that Mikey would bring me to the one painting that I needed to see because that is how strong of a pull I felt to go there. I thought maybe I would see a butterfly painting or a purple sky sunset. I walked and saw them all and they were beautiful but I couldn’t figure out why I needed to go there after seeing each one.

But then, I saw this man sitting in a chair under a large umbrella painting and I began to speak with him. He opened up when I asked “what got you into painting?” He shared that he was a recovering alcoholic and painting was his outlet and what he felt led to do, to help his sobriety and maintain a passion for life. He shared with me that he had been contemplating suicide too. It was gut wrenching. I got so teary eyed and got goosebumps immediately. I figured out right then and there why Mikey had led me over to these paintings. It was to have a conversation with James! I shared with James Chonody about my son and how he had just been killed by a drunk driver and he almost took Mikey’s sister’s life, too. We continued our conversations for about an hour and we both were just overwhelmed with our paths crossing.

I hugged James and thanked him for his sobriety and shared with him the significance of how that made me feel as Mikey’s mom that he was doing his very best to continue to be sober. James shared his life struggles and losses due to his alcoholism, admitted to driving drunk a lot and just so glad he didn’t hurt anyone, and

my heart for him and where he is now is exactly why we had to meet.

We exchanged contact info and he asked to paint a portrait of Mikey for me as a gift because now he is inspired to stay sober even more for him. I gave him a “Mikey bracelet” and he still wears it as a reminder. Since then, this man has now sadly painted numerous paintings for grieving families and parents who have lost a child or a loved one. I continue to tell James that my kid led me to him and that now Mikey and God are using him and his talents to continue to paint for families and continue to help his sobriety too. I am forever grateful for this man and what he has gifted me with. These gifts of paintings he has done for me are incredible but I am mostly eternally grateful for his walk in his sobriety and his passion for grieving families.

My portrait of Mikey he painted is absolutely precious!

Thank you, James!!!! You’re being used.

~Mikey’s Mother Jacklynn Cooley Stroz

When I received the paintings James gifted me of my daughter, I broke down and cried. Seeing Kaits beautiful face on canvas, that I could rub and stare at was exactly what I needed at a time when I needed it most. Loosing a child is the most painful feeling a parent can experience. Having a stranger care about your broken heart and paint something so beautiful and meaningful that it gives you a sense of peace.

After seeing the portrait James created for Jacklynn of her son Mikey, a close friend reached out to him to request a portrait of my son Nick, whom I had recently lost. When I received the painting, I broke down in tears—it was absolutely perfect. It was my beautiful boy! Being able to see my son’s face every day has brought some healing to my broken heart. My husband and I travel often, and the paintings come with us wherever we go.

Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to help James share his incredible gift with other grieving mothers across the country. James has done more for me than I can ever express. His kind heart and remarkable talent for capturing the essence of lives once lived have been a true blessing.
