Group, my role takes me to business activities all over the globe. Yet, no matter where I go, my heart is deeply tied to Avalon Park, a community we’ve nurtured and invested in for over 25 years.

When I first moved from Zurich, Switzerland, to Florida some 30 years ago, I missed the towns and villages I was accustomed to— places where you could truly live, learn, work, and play all in one community. Today, Avalon Park Orlando fulfills that vision for me, so much so that when I’m abroad, it’s what I miss the most.

From my office on the 4th floor of the Avalon Park Group building, I can walk to restaurants, stores, or even the gym. Being part of this mixed-use town gives me a strong sense of belonging and safety. It is a privilege I do not take for granted, knowing it is made possible by the hard work and dedication of so many local business owners. They put in long hours to bring our community the dream of a town where everything is within reach.

One of my favorite routines is texting my family for dinner orders and picking up food from three or four different Avalon Park restaurants to bring home. This holiday season, I encourage you to consider catering your family gatherings or holiday parties

supporting small businesses while giving a thoughtful gift. Check out this article online for more ideas.

Our commitment to this community continues to grow. Recently, we started a series of renovations at the East Orlando Gym, which is now open and ready to welcome you and your family. Stop by and see the upgrades— it is just another way Avalon Park is evolving to meet the needs of our residents.

Lastly, don’t miss our signature annual holiday event, Avalon Aglow, on December 7th, 3-9 pm. Join us as we come together as a town to celebrate the season with our annual parade, real snow, pictures with Santa, entertainment, and activities for the whole family.

Wishing you and your loved ones a happy and joyful holiday season. Thank you for being part of what makes Avalon Park a place we are all proud to call home.

From the Desk of Commissioner

Maribel Gomez Cordero

Happy December!

With the start of December, the magic of the holiday season is in full display. This month, we come together to celebrate traditions, from festive decorations to exchanging gifts, all under the glow of holiday lights. It’s a time to reflect on the joys of the year gone by and look forward to the possibilities of a new one. December bridges the gap between the closing chapters of the old year and the promise of fresh beginnings, bringing us a sense of wonder and warmth amidst the colder weather of winter.

Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings has launched the annual “Mayor’s Holiday Toy Drive” to support needy children during the holiday season. Residents can donate new, unwrapped toys at 37 locations across the county, including library branches, fire rescue stations, and recreation centers, until Dec. 9, or purchase gifts online through the county’s virtual toy store by Dec. 3. FOX 35 Orlando personalities will host a special event at the East Colonial Walmart Supercenter on Dec. 7, encouraging shoppers to donate toys. Gifts can be

for all ages, but cash, gift cards, and plush toys are not accepted. Donors are urged to include additional items like batteries for electronic toys or crayons with coloring books. The collected toys will benefit programs like Orange County Neighborhood Centers for Families, Wraparound Orange, and local schools and nonprofits. Now in its 14th year, the toy drive has collected over 86,000 toys, with last year’s efforts serving nearly 1,900 children with over 11,500 toys. For details on drop-off locations and to access the virtual toy store, visit the county’s website at https://www.orangecountyfl. net/FamiliesHealthSocialSvcs/ OrangeCountyMayorsToyDrive. aspx

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, or if you would like to receive my newsletter, you can email me at district4@ocfl.net or call my office at 407-836-5881. You can also meet me in person on the first Wednesdays of the month at the East Orange Community Center (12050 E Colonial Dr) or on the Third Wednesdays of the month at the Meadow Woods Recreation Center

(1751 Rhode Island Woods Cir). My time at both locations is from 10am to 12pm.

Thank you again, Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas!

Bring Joy This Holiday Season: Donate to Toys for Tots at The Flats

The holiday season is a time of celebration, love, and togetherness—a time to reflect on the blessings in our lives and share that joy with others. This year, you can be a part of something truly special by donating a new, unwrapped toy to Toys for Tots at The Flats leasing office lobby. Your generosity can light up a child’s holiday and remind them that kindness exists in abundance.

For decades, Toys for Tots, a program organized by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, has brought smiles to millions of children by providing toys to families who might be struggling during the holiday season. It’s more than just a toy—it’s a message of hope and a reminder to children that they are loved and valued, no matter their circumstances.

When we come together as a community to support initiatives like Toys for Tots, we strengthen the bonds that connect us. Donating a toy is a small act with a big impact—it can spark joy, inspire hope, and create lasting memories for a child who might otherwise go without during the holidays.

The Flats leasing office makes it easy to participate in this important cause. Simply drop off your new, unwrapped toys in the collection box in the lobby. Every single donation counts, and no gesture is too small.

Let’s work together to spread the magic of the holidays

to those who need it most. This season, give the gift of joy, love, and community. Together, we can ensure every child experiences the warmth and happiness the holidays are meant to bring.

Orlando Mom Collective’s 25 Days of Santa!

So many of us love Santa Claus; (Kris Kringle, Saint Nicholas, Sinnterklaas, Père Noël, Father Christmas, Papai Noel — whichever name your family uses) this white-haired old man patron saint who is famous for giving generous gifts to the poor and for protecting children. His name lives on as a symbol of Christmas. Kindness, generosity, caring for others that are less fortunate than ourselves — LOVE. I respect others’ ideas and methods of celebrating the winter holidays, but the depiction of Santa is everywhere. Use that to teach our children to be kind to others, not just for Christmas but all year long.

With that said, here is Orlando Mom’s 25 days of Christmas Santa sightings list (in no particular order). Each of these wonderful Santa’s helpers is doing their part to help keep that magic of Christmas alive. Enjoy the upcoming holidays with your family and friends and remember to treat others as you would want to be treated.

Tis the Season to Share Kindness: Building Community and Love Through Family Traditions

The holiday season is a wonderful opportunity for families to connect, foster kindness, and strengthen their sense of community. Engaging in thoughtful, family-centered activities spreads holiday cheer and helps children learn the value of love and giving. Here are some ideas to inspire your family this December:

Create a Kindness Countdown Calendar

Instead of a traditional advent calendar, try one that encourages daily acts of kindness. Each day, your family can make a small, meaningful difference:

- Donate gently used toys or clothes to a local shelter.

- Write thank-you notes to first responders, postal workers, or community helpers.

Volunteer Together

Model the joy of giving by volunteering as a family by:

- Supporting an animal rescue by donating food, or supplies

- Participating in park cleanups or beautifying public spaces by planting flowers or picking up litter.

Share the Gift of Stories

- Books can spark joy, connection, and inspiration during the holidays. Try these activities to share the magic of reading:

- Select children’s books to donate to schools, hospitals, or community organizations.

- Attend holiday storytime events at local libraries or cultural centers.

Books are a powerful way to connect with others and spark joy during the holiday season. This year, consider gifting stories that inspire curiosity and foster a love of reading. One fantastic option is Riyan’s Backyard Adventures: A Visitor in Our Garden by local author Gloria T. Williams. To learn more

This heartwarming tale invites young readers to explore the wonders of nature and the joy of discovery. Riyan’s Backyard Adventures: A Visitor in Our Garden is available on Amazon. Let’s celebrate the magic of stories and support local talent this holiday season!

Roam and Work: Navigating Career Success as a Digital Nomad

Embracing a digital nomad lifestyle opens a world of innovative career possibilities that blend freedom with professional growth. This dynamic way of living allows individuals to explore new cultures while maintaining a progressive career from anywhere in the world. It challenges traditional work paradigms and encourages a more fulfilling balance of work and life experiences. For those ready to break the mold, the digital nomad path offers a unique opportunity to redefine what it means to work and live. The 5th Floor offers these tips.

Find Professional Community in Co-working Spaces

Co-working spaces like The 5th Floor are invaluable for remote workers seeking community and productivity. These spaces not only provide essential work facilities but also foster networking opportunities to enhance your career. By connecting with other professionals, you can share ideas, collaborate on projects, and gain insights, enriching your work life. A co-working space membership also helps establish a structured work routine, crucial for staying focused in unfamiliar settings.

Stay Competitive by Continuously Expanding Your Skills

For digital nomads, relevance in the job market requires an ongoing commitment to skill enhancement. This lifestyle demands adaptability to new trends and technologies, which can be achieved through online learning platforms offering courses and tutorials. By diversifying and deepening your expertise, you remain competitive and flexible, ready to take on various roles. Continuous learning ensures a steady flow of opportunities, making you a preferred choice for clients and employers wherever you travel.

Pursue an Accounting Degree for a Career with Flexibility

Pursuing a bachelor accounting degree online offers a practical route to a career that combines stability with flexibility, allowing you to work full-time while studying. This program hones critical skills in areas like managerial accounting and accounting research, prized across various sectors. With these capabilities, accountants can embrace remote work, managing financial tasks such as bookkeeping, tax preparation, and analysis from any location. This versatility makes accounting a particularly appealing field for those seeking a structured yet adaptable professional path.

Protect Your Well-being with Strong Work-Life Boundaries

Maintaining a strict separation between work and

personal time is vital to avoid burnout as a digital nomad. Set specific work hours and ensure to disconnect afterwards to enjoy the local culture and relax. This clear delineation helps preserve your mental well-being and productivity, enriching your travel experience. Establishing a balanced routine allows you to savor each destination while staying on top of your professional commitments.

Financial Stability Through Smart Planning

Navigating the financial ups and downs of a digital nomad lifestyle calls for careful planning. Set aside a savings buffer to handle income fluctuations and unexpected expenses, ensuring your financial stability. Budgeting carefully for both regular and unforeseen costs helps mitigate financial stress. Investing wisely can also grow your savings, providing additional security as you balance work with your adventures.

Flexibility in Scheduling to Maximize Productivity

The autonomy to design your own schedule is a fundamental benefit of being a digital nomad. Adjust your working hours to align with your most productive periods and accommodate any time zone differences with clients. This tailored scheduling not only boosts work quality but also optimizes your energy throughout the day. A well-planned but flexible schedule allows you to meet professional deadlines while exploring new locales.

Optimize Efficiency with Organizational Tools

Leverage project management and communication tools to enhance your efficiency while working remotely. These tools help organize tasks, set clear deadlines, and ensure seamless communication with clients and teams globally. Staying organized and keeping transparent communication lines open builds trust and maintains your professional reputation. A robust system for managing your workload ensures peace of mind, allowing you to enjoy your travels fully.

The journey of a digital nomad is about creating a life that is as dynamic as it is disciplined. It demands a strategic approach to career development, personal well-being, and financial management. With the right tools and mindset, you can enjoy the richness of global experiences while advancing in your chosen profession. This lifestyle isn’t just about where you work—it’s about how you work and thrive in a global setting.

ADDing FUNdamentals Financial Literacy Program Expansion

The Early Learning Coalition of Orange County, Addition Financial Credit Union, AdventHealth for Children, Orange County Public Schools, and Junior Achievement are expanding the ADDing FUNdamentals Financial Literacy Program. Seven new childcare centers and schools, including 11 new classrooms are being added to the unique financial literacy program for pre-school children. The program now has a total of 15 childcare centers/schools and 25 classrooms.

The ADDing FUNdamentals program has little learners practicing their financial literacy skills in playhouses designed to look like mini-credit unions. The pre-kindergarten students learn how to count money, manage a cash register and exchange play money for goods rendered in the Addition Financial Credit Union “branches.”

ADDing FUNdamentals – A Financial Literacy Program for Preschools uses Junior Achievement’s JA Ourselves curriculum to teach five 30-minute lessons focused on choices, needs versus wants, and giving to a worthy cause. The five lessons are: This or That? Make a Choice; Do I Need What I Want; A Penny Earned; A Penny Saved; A Penny Shared. The JA trained classroom teacher will reinforce the learning objectives throughout the year.

“Our mission is to inspire and prepare young people to succeed and empower them to own their economic future. Early education is incredibly important for young learners, especially financial literacy. Not only to develop an understanding of dollars, cents, wants and needs, but to develop a positive relationship with money that empowers them as they grow into independence,” said Kate Hammond, Vice President of Education, Junior Achievement of Central Florida.

The ADDing FUNdamentals program is now being implemented in these 11 new classrooms:

• AdventHealth for Children West Lakes Early Learning Center: 2 new classrooms

600 S. Dollins Ave., Orlando, FL 32805

• Conway Learning Center: 3 new classrooms

3636 E. Michigan St., Orlando, FL 32806

• Early Education Station: 1 new classroom

6549 Old Winter Garden Road, Orlando, FL 32835

• Orange County Public Schools: 5 new classrooms

- Bonneville Elementary 14700 Sussex Drive, Orlando, FL 32826

- Eagle’s Nest Elementary 5353 MetroWest Blvd, Orlando, FL 32811

- Ivey Lane Elementary (Class B) 11701 Ivey Lane, Orlando, FL 32837

- Lake Silver Elementary 2401 N. Rio Grande Avenue, Orlando, FL 32804

- Rosemont Elementary (Class A) 4650 Point Look Out Rd, Orlando, FL 32808

Addition Financial Credit Union provided students with new backpacks filled with materials for students to continue learning at home. “It has been rewarding to see the early success and now growth of this program that is a true building block for children beginning their financial journey, “said Kevin Dougherty Chief Operating Officer of Addition Financial Credit Union and board member of Early Learning Coalition of Orange County. “Putting the financial well-being of our community is a huge part of our mission at Addition Financial, and we are grateful AdventHealth is joining this terrific coalition of partners aiming to do just that.”

Orange County Public Schools has more than 300 students participating in the program.

“It is exciting to see our young learners make smart financial choices. The simple act of saving to ‘buy’ that high value toy is a real-world life lesson that can impact their lifelong spending habits. Creating savvy givers, savers and spenders is just one way we are leading students to success,” said. Dr. Maria Vazquez, OCPS superintendent. “Our partnerships with the ELCOC, JA and Addition Financial are invaluable to fulfilling our mission. We are grateful for their continued collaboration and support of our schools and innovative programs.”

The West Lakes Early Learning Center’s commitment to early childhood education and development extends beyond the classroom, giving children access to quality health care through AdventHealth for Children, comprehensive social services and extracurricular activities such as gardening, soccer, and tennis. Thanks to Addition Financial, the Early Learning Coalition of Orange County and Junior Achievement, enrolled children will now also have the opportunity to learn about financial literacy.

“We know that the first 2,000 days of a child’s life are the most important for their development and that teaching children about money at an early age can have lifelong and life-changing impacts,” said Alfreda Clark, director of the West Lakes Early Learning Center.

The ELCOC secured funding to provide the playhouses, cash registers, and educational toys for students to purchase with their earnings. “The Early Learning Coalition of Orange County is honored to collaborate on this important initiative. Teaching young children about saving, spending and sharing helps them understand money management at an early age. This will help prepare them for financial independence and informed decision-making as they grow older,” said Dr. Scott Fritz, Chief Executive Officer of ELCOC.
