From the Desk of Commissioner

Maribel Gomez Cordero Every 10 years the Florida Constitution and the Orange County Charter calls for a reconfiguration of political boundaries. As the latest census was completed by the U.S. Census Bureau in 2020, Orange County must complete its decennial redistricting process by March 2022.

There are nine more redistricting meetings, and we want to hear from you. The Advisory Committee for Redistricting will be meeting in District 4 on Monday, October 18, 2021 at 6:30PM. The location will be South Econ Community Park 3800 S Econlockhatchee Trail, Orlando, FL 32829.

The goal of redistricting is to readjust the population between commission districts so that no Orange County Commissioner is representing substantially more individual residents than the other commissioners. Redistricting is accomplished by adjusting the boundaries of the County’s six commission districts to account for population growth. Decennial redistricting occurs every 10 years and is based on the population data collected by the U.S. Census Bureau’s most recent decennial census (2020).

Remember that Camping World Stadium offers both Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines for 1st and 2nd doses. If you need to be tested, there are 3 locations throughout the county to do so. Go to ocfl.net for more information. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, or if you would like to receive my newsletter, you can email me at district4@ocfl.net or call my office at 407-836-5881. Blessings!

Keeping Up with the Avalon Mail Center With the Halloween season coming up, there is no better time to ship out your spooky fall goodies! Here at Avalon Mail Center, we are prepping for the festivities with special Halloween stamp books and our seasonal padded poly mailers. As seen in the picture, the stamp book features colorful “Spooky Silhouettes,” perfect to spice up any letter. Additionally, our “Happy Halloween” padded poly mailers are a bright orange color featured with bats, spider webs, and other spooky critters. It is the best time to send out a care pack-

worn once, so you might as well buy used or give them to someone else, that way you are helping your budget, community, and environment. Additionally, we all love the tradition of carving Jack-o-lanterns but instead of letting those old pumpkin rinds go to waste, consider composting them and adding them to your garden. This is a great way to not only improve your soil quality but also reduce waste. Lastly, Halloween always comes with an excess of trash, whether it be candy wrappers, cobwebs, glow sticks, spiders, you name it. We encourage you as a community to come together and clean up the leftover trash in your neighborhoods. You will be doing a huge favor to your fellow neighbors and your own living environment.

The fall festivities are a great time to think about the other members of your community and to give back. One way we can do this is to consider donating treats and food to your local food bank. While we all love giving the children of our neighborhood some sweet treats on Halloween night, this serves as a good reminder to think about all the members in our community experiencing hunger and food insecurity this season. Also, with your excess of candies this season, consider sending some to support our troops. There are many operations that will collect Halloween candy and send them out as care packages to the United States Military, a great way to support your country this holiday. Another way to help out would be to donate or repurpose your old Halloween costumes. Oftentimes our costumes are only

When will Real Estate Prices Come Down? You are prbably thinking “I’m waiting until home prices fall before I buy my next home.” Then you ask the question that I have been asked countless times this year is... “When are home prices going to fall?” Before I answer this question though, let’s look at some historical and current real estate sales data from the Orlando MLS. In 2004, just as the real estate market was heating up the Average Sales Price of homes sold in the 32828 zip code was $244,544. Over the next couple of years, we witnessed a dramatic increase in home prices primarily due to corrupt lending practices a lack of financial accountability for buyers. In 2008-2012, we witnessed a crash in the home prices. Let’s be conservative! Assume a reasonable year over year real estate price increase of only 3.5%. The average price of a home in the 32828 zip code in 2021 would be $438,877. As of August 2021, the average price of homes sold was $405,530. Home prices are currently $33,347 less than they would be if we had a steady 3.5% year over year growth. (See graph below.) Given what we have experienced this year and even though it is difficult to believe, current home prices are in line with historical price growth expectations.

Based on the data above, I don’t believe that we will see a Real Estate Price correction in the forseeable future for several reasons. The first is that lending criteria is far more stringent; buyers truly have to be qualified to purchase a home in 2021. Secondly, there is a significant shortage of homes for sale. If you are thinking of buying a new home, now is most likely the right time to purchase. You are welcome to call me and discuss your needs.

US Army PaYS Program Updates

The Partnership for Youth Success (PaYS) Program is a strategic partnership between the U.S. Army and a cross section of corporations, companies, and public sector agencies. The Program provides America’s youth with an opportunity to serve their country while they prepare for their future. PaYS Partners guarantee Soldiers an interview and possible employment after the Army. This unique Program is part of the Army’s effort to partner with America’s business community and reconnect America with its Army. The PaYS Program began in 2000 as an enlistment incentive for Regular Army enlisted Soldiers. In October 2002, the Program expanded to include Army Reserve Soldiers. The Program later expanded to include Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) Reserve Component Cadets, ROTC Cadets who incur an active duty commitment, Officer Candidate School

(OCS), Warrant Officer Flight Training (WOFT) and the Army National Guard (ARNG). In April 2011, the U.S. Army Marketing and Research Group (AMRG), a field operating agency of the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Manpower and Reserve Affairs, assumed the responsibility for administering and managing the PaYS Program. Upon AMRG’s dissolution, TRADOC, the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, became the proponent on 01 October 2019.

Answering the Call to Save Water in a Big Way Some of OUC’s largest commercial customers have answered the call to limit irrigation and reduce other uses of potable water while a liquid oxygen shortage impacts our water treatment system.

Farms, which processes fruits, vegetables and other foods, stopped irrigating landscaping and shut down two of eight wash stations during the second shift. The cutbacks on the food-washing stations will save 3,000 gallons of water per day, or 18,000 gallons over a six-day workweek, said Jake Donnay, Director of Engineering. Night shift sanitation workers also have been instructed to turn off water hoses when they’re not in use.

Universal Orlando Resort immediately responded to OUC’s urgent request for all customers to conserve water. It eliminated general “hose-down” washes in its theme parks in favor of spot-cleaning and cut back on potable water irrigation at its properties. On Aug. 20, 2021, OUC and the City of Orlando asked customers to limit irrigation and reduce all nonessential water use because of dwindling supplies of liquid oxygen, a vital component in OUC’s water treatment process. The supply shortage is linked to the latest resurgence of COVID-19, mainly among the unvaccinated, with hospitals using liquid oxygen in the respiratory treatments of infected patients. Irrigation accounts for about 40% of OUC customers’ potable water usage. The request to limit irrigation does not apply to anyone using well or reclaimed water. The Chamber staff is asked on countless occasions, how much should I spend on marketing. In 2019/2020 the average business spent between 5% to 10% of their total sales revenue on marketing. This has been the general trend for several years, but some companies spend more. Startups tend to spend closer to 11.2% and B2C businesses also tend to spend more. These numbers are flexible based on your desired outcome. Well established businesses who wish to just keep a presence, may spend closer to the 5%. We arm your child with the tools needed to overcome physical, verbal, and psychological harassment, so they are so confident in themselves that no bully will try to harass them. - Total Responsibility: We prepare your child to deal with bullies without turning them into one. Most martial arts programs rely on striking the attacker with violent punches, kicks, knees, and elbows, but in the Gracie Bullyproof program we take a different approach. All the techniques are purely defensive and utilize no strikes. Furthermore, we teach children how to defuse confrontations with words and never to initiate physical aggression. If attacked, we offer techniques to non-violently neutralize the threat and gain control until help arrives. Tips to Stay Healthy and Active for the Family

It’s important to ensure your child stays healthy and active. With school starting back up, it can be difficult to fit healthy living into your family’s busy routine. But how can you keep your child active, engaged, and healthy, all while having fun? There are a few simple ways to add healthy habits to your whole family’s daily lives, and these tips from a wellness expert will explore safe, fun ways to incorporate activity and nutrition for all ages! 1. Practice what you preach! As parents, you may often feel as if you never have enough time. But did you know that it’s recommended adults complete up to 2 hours and 30 minutes of moderate physical activity per day? With your busy schedule, it’s important to find times throughout the day when you can exercise. The best part is, once your kids see you doing it, they’ll want to do it too! If you participate in daily physical activity, even if it’s broken up into 10- to 15-minute increments, your kids will see that exercise can be a normal part of their day. Kids should complete an hour or more of physical activity every day, so a great way to get it done is to get the whole family involved. Set expectations for yourself and your children so you can all celebrate accomplishments and achieve goals together!

2. Think outside the box. Exercise is often watered down to whatever you can complete in a gym. But when it comes to keeping kids active and healthy, they can engage in a variety of activities that activate their muscles and their minds! Recently, parents and kids alike had to get creative with ways to stay moving in and around the house. Fun activities you can do as a family include sports like basketball, softball, and kickball, but you can also try unique games like hop scotch, or other activities like going on walks, hiking nature trails, and much more.

healthy foods together can help everyone at the table feel involved in the family’s healthy lifestyle. It’s vital to prioritize your family’s health. Kids need healthy options for activities and meals to keep them engaged and active, and the

whole family can benefit from healthier habits. Try these tips with your family to promote a healthy lifestyle in your home! Ensuring your family stays active and engaged is the first step to protecting your child’s health.

If you’re looking to multitask, another uncommon exercise can be active chores! Sweeping, vacuuming, and other tasks around the house can get your kids away from their screens and take a few items off your todo list at the same time. 3. Make nutrition a family activity. Trips to the grocery store are often less than glamorous, especially from a kid’s perspective, but you can get your child involved in how you shop for food and have a hand in their own nutrition. From reading nutrition facts labels to shopping the perimeter of the store where fresh, healthier ingredients are usually found, your kids will be more enthusiastic about healthy eating if they feel involved. Another activity to try with your family is to locate your nearest farmer’s market and pay a visit. Kids can select fresh ingredients, and throwing them together in the kitchen can be a family affair. Shopping for, cooking, and eating

It’s time to rediscover everything you may have missed out on the past year! From Closet to Checkout: Goodwill Can Change Lives is already making an impact. Instead of going to a landfill, the items will be purchased by local buyers – reducing waste and offsetting the environmental footprint of buying new. In Central Florida alone, Goodwill diverts 16 million pounds of waste from landfills every year. Step Two: Behind the Scenes. Growing up with a learning disability, “Erik” was regularly told what he couldn’t do. Things that were simple for most people – interviewing for a job or working five days a week – were considered impossible for him.

But when he was referred to vocational rehabilitation at Goodwill, he met a caring team of counselors who helped him challenge those limits. Now a donation processor, he enjoys a flexible workload, accessible accommodations, and the dignity and independence of a meaningful career.

Step Four: After Check-Out. It’s been tough for “Greg” to find work. He’s applied for multiple jobs without success … until someone recommends that he contact Goodwill’s virtual Job Connection team. Thanks to Meredith’s donation and Layla’s purchase, Goodwill is able to provide free career counseling to any Central Floridian looking for work. For Greg, that means partnering with a trained specialist who can help him finetune his resume, practice interviewing and connect with employers in his field. That support pays off: After months of searching, he finally gets the “yes” he’s been waiting for. Dropping off a box at Goodwill is a quick and convenient stop on Meredith’s daily commute. For Erik, Goodwill is a career that lets him polish his professional skills and give back to the community. And Layla sees it as a chance find great deals on everything from stylish dorm décor … to professional outfits for her next internship … to furniture for a new apartment.

When Meredith drops off her donations, Erik and his team will check for visible damage. Items in good condition will be sorted, priced and sent out to local stores. Lighthouse Central FL Receives $10,000 Grant From Dr. Harry J. Heeb Foundation Grant to Support Organization’s Early Intervention Program Services for Infants and Children from Birth through Age 5. Lighthouse Central Florida, a nonprofit that provides vision rehabilitation services to Central Floridians living with vision impairment or blindness, has received a $10,000 grant from the Dr. Harry J. Heeb Foundation. The funds will support the organization’s Early Intervention Program services for up to 100 babies, toddlers and children, from birth through age five. This donation will also allow the nonprofit to expand its services to additional children in need of vision rehabilitation. “Lighthouse’s critical vision rehabilitation services fulfill a basic need by offering infants and children the skills necessary for independent and healthy living, school readiness, orientation and mobility, and adaptations to accomplish everyday tasks,” said Kyle Johnson, president and CEO of Lighthouse Central Florida. “Children under age five who are born with or develop blindness or vision impairment risk missing not only critical developmental milestones, but the very basic skills that are vital to a child’s quality of life. Support from the Dr. Harry J. Heeb Foundation – especially during times of crisis and uncertainty – ensures that services and training continue for Central Florida’s community of blind and vision impaired infants, children and families.” Lighthouse’s Early Intervention services are provided to the child and their family to

encourage and empower them to participate in and benefit from the development and delivery of the service plan. Early Intervention mentors incorporate proven teaching techniques specially designed for children with visual impairments to help develop literacy, as well as cognitive, motor, social and communication skills. Dr. Harry J. Heeb was a physician specializing in eye, ear, nose and throat medicine, and was the first examiner for the blind in the state of Wisconsin. His foundation provides grants to nonprofits and organizations focused on helping children and providing medical care for people with eye, ear, nose or throat illnesses, diseases or disabilities. About Lighthouse Central Florida Since 1976, Lighthouse Central Florida has provided education, independent life skills, and job training and placement to more than 100,000 people with sight impairment and their families. The organization is the only nationally accredited nonprofit offering a comprehensive range of vision-specific rehabilitation services in Central Florida. Lighthouse ensures that individuals of all backgrounds have the tools they need to lead productive, independent lives, while pursuing their dreams and goals without limitations.
