THE HIGH COURT ON THURSDAY STRUCK DOWN THE APPOINTMENT OF V DINESH REDDY AS THE DIRECTORGENERAL OF POLICE (HEAD OF THE POLICE FORCE).

The Andhra Pradesh Government and the NTR health University have been asked by the Supreme Court to respond to a plea, which has alleged

that several merit students and candidates have been denied admissions on the management quota seats in various private colleges of the state.

The notices were issued on the 17th of August, the petitions were filed by s filed by a group of students, a bench of justices HL Dattu and CK Prasad said admissions made till date for academic year 2012 will be subject to the final outcome of the students’ pleas, pending before it. The Andhra Pradesh private medical colleges have three category of seats - “A”, “B” and “C”. “A” and “B” category seats are filled by the colleges on the basis of a common entrance test conducted by the state’s NTR University, for which the fee is comparatively low. Category “C” seats are filled by the management by way of newspaper notifications inviting students who have secured a minimum of 60 percent marks in the qualifying plus 2 examination, as held by the apex court in the PA Inamdar case but with a higher fee structure of approximately around Rs 5.5 lakh per annum.

He also took a jibe at TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu for the latter’s observation that he would join hands with other parties to prevent Naren-

SOURCES POINTED OUT THAT THE CBI WOULD NOT HAVE NAMED DHARMANA IN THE CHARGESHEET WITHOUT CLEARANCE FROM ITS BOSSES IN DELHI.

Congress: Not to rescue tainted ministers

According to sources, the AICC leadership is more interested in projecting a clean image for the party rather than going to the rescue of tainted ministers and allow the party’s image to take a beating, particularly in Andhra Pradesh. According to one leader, the leadership is aware of the consequences of allowing the law to take its own course but has girded its loins to face the consequences which might be in the form of such ministers turning inimical to the party. The high command is aware that if even if the chief minister is directed

to ask the tainted ministers to remain in the cabinet, it will be a mere eye-wash and will not serve any useful purpose either for the party or the government or for that matter, to the minister himself. Sources pointed out that the CBI would not have named Dharmana in the chargesheet without clearance from its bosses in Delhi. Dharmana Prasad Rao, the roads and buildings minister is miffed that neither the chief minister nor the party high command has made an effort to prevent ministers from falling victims to the decisions taken unilaterally by the YSR government, the party’s top brass in Delhi appears to be in no mood to spare any of the ministers or officials who carry the stigma of being part of the alleged multi-crore scam.

HC Upholds CAT’s Order to quash DGP’s appointment : AP The Andhra Pradesh High Court on Thursday dismissed a petition of the state government challenging the CAT order which had set aside the appointment of V Dinesh Reddy as the Director General of Police and directed it to complete the process of appointing a new DGP within two weeks. The High Court upheld the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) order that due procedure was not followed in the appointment of Reddy as the Andhra Pradesh police chief. It also imposed costs of Rs 5,000 on the state government for filing the “baseless” petition against the CAT order. In its order, the High Court further directed the state government to send a fresh list of three senior-most IPS officers to the UPSC for selection of DGP and

asked the government to appoint a panel within a week regarding the appointment. The court also asked Reddy to continue in his post, till the appointment of new DGP. The state government and Reddy had earlier appealed against the CAT order which in June this year had set aside his appointment after senior-most IPS officer of Andhra Pradesh cadre, P Gautam Kumar, had challenged the government’s decision to appoint Reddy as the DGP last year.Kumar pointed out that the state government had ignored his seniority with regard to the appointment. In its verdict, the CAT had annulled Reddy’s appointment and directed the government to take up the exercise afresh in consultation with the UPSC.

LUXURY LIST PENFOLDS THE MOST EXPENSIVE WINE Penfolds has been in the wine-making business since 1844 and has put Australia on the map of fine wine. Penfolds has done it again. They have launched the most expensive wine in the world at $168, 000(Rs 1 crore approximately)! The limited edition of the 2004 Block 42 Cabernet Sauvignon which was priced only at $225 when it was released a few years ago is now the most expensive wine Penfolds has decided to launch the Block 42 Cabernet Sauvignon not just as a wine but primarily as an art piece. So, what makes the Penfolds wine really special? Well, it is a wine that will be sold directly from a winery. Not only, that it will be perhaps the first wine not to be sold in a classy wine bottle. In order to make it more like a piece of art, the makers of Block 42 Cabernet Sauvignon decided to sell the wine in a sealed glass capsule which they proudly call the “Ampoule.” Penfolds Chief Winemaker, Peter Gago, will launch the wine in Moscow. Peter Gago also believes that the Ampoule like any other Penfolds project is a product of research and science along with the joy and energy that goes into making any Penfolds product. A very unique way we say to savour the most expensive wine in the world. Let’s give you some details about this fine wine bottle. Penfolds: The Most Expensive Wine in an Ampoule. A single yard wine, Penfolds Block 42 Cabernet Sauvignon is only made in exceptional vintages and produced from the oldest continuously producing Cabernet Sauvignon vines in the world; rare wine that represents the South Australian wine making skills and heritage. The Ampoule which is housed in a wooden case is, however, grabbing more eyeballs than the wine. It is also said that when you finally decide to savour this very fine wine, a winemaker from Penfolds will be especially at your service to help you open the Ampoule, thus making it into a special Penfolds wine opening ceremony. A sterling silver tool which is tungsten tipped has been designed to open the bottle. A sterling silver tastevin will also be used to produce the wine by the winemaker. With only twelve handmade globally, the Penfolds Ampoule is a testament to the passion that Penfolds 26 AVANT GARDE LIFE

has for not only innovation and fine wine, but for its South Australian heritage and the skills of the region’s finest artists and craftsmen, four of whom were commissioned to collaborate on this rare project. The unique Ampoule which holds as much wine as stored in a standard wine bottle was designed and hand-blown by an Adelaide based Artist, Nick Mount. Renowned glass blower Ray Leake created the Ampoule, and the wooden case was designed by Andrew Bartlett, a fine furniture craftsman. The metal detailing was looked into by Hendrik Forster.

THE WORLD’S MOST EXPENSIVE INCARNATION OF THE MONOPOLY BOARD GAME The most played board game in the world is Parker Brothers,’ Monopoly. It is certainly a believable title when you consider that, the game has been played by over 750 million people since Parker Brothers originally published it in 1935. Kids and for a matter of fact even elders love playing monopoly; it always means family time with a healthy competitive spirit. However, for some people, it seems to be more than a mere board game, ask jeweler Sidney Mobell, who got the notion of creating a blinged-out version of the board game when he heard about a Monopoly tournament taking place in London. He called Parker Brothers for permission and then set to work creating the golden game, working every day for a year straight. The final product was “The world’s most expensive Monopoly game” priced at $2million dollars (Rs 11 crores approximately). All of the properties that make up the game board are also set in gems, with 165 gemstones in total. The dice with 42 fullcut diamonds signifying the numbers is priced at $10,000(Rs 5.5 lakhs approximately). The board game also features the photo etched “Chance” and “Community Chest” cards. The Monopoly board was on display at the Museum of American Finance for two years, on loan from the Smithsonian. It is one of 19 works donated by Mobell in January 2003 in honor of his late wife. When Mobell brought the finished board to London, he was closely followed by guards, he says. “I felt like the king of England.” That was the only time the prized set was played on: a showdown between him and Britain’s former Prime Minister Edward Heath. Mobell, has staked out a career as an unconventional crafter of decadence. He’s made diamond-encrusted yo-yos and mousetraps, as well as solid gold sardine cans, cellphones and eyeballs. Not to mention a gold toilet seat and garbage cans, And Monopoly is not his only contribution to the rarefied world of lavish board games: Mobell has also made bejeweled backgammon, dominos and chess sets. However, if any financiers are thinking of blowing their bonuses on the Monopoly board, they should be warned: “The set is not for sale.”This precious Monopoly set has been certified by Guinness World Records as the most expensive Monopoly set in the world.

LUXURY LIST $2 MILLION DARK KNIGHT THEMED CUSTOM HOME THEATRE A luxury home without a plush home theater is like an apartment without balcony. The elite movie buffs dream home theatre room is as much about the theme for a private escape into the world of cinematic experience, as it is about the high-end home theater equipments. The dream home theaters are designed to create a cinematic aura; from Star Wars themed home theater to Titanic themed home theater. The latest is The Dark Knight Themed home theater by Elite Home Theater Seating, known for their custom luxury home theater and home theater furniture. Built at a cost of $2 million (Rs 11 crores approximately) The ornately detailed study of the 12,000 square foot private Greenwich home installing the new Dark Knight custom home theater echoes the cozy confines of Wayne Manor itself. The study, complete with a stately Grandfather clock, is flanked by bookshelves upon which sits a bust of William Shakespeare - and with a clockwise turn of the writer’s head - the Grandfather clock swings open to reveal the elevator doors. A real fingerprint scan is required to gain access to the elevator. Stepping into the cylindrical stainless steel elevator a glowing Bat symbol pulsates at the bottom of the button panel. To the left of the symbol, is the letter “B” that stands for BATCAVE. After pressing the iconic glowing bat symbol, the elevator descends and the floor-toceiling mirrors on either side of the elevator come alive by displaying various body scanning graphics. Once the elevator occupants have been properly “identified”, a robotic female voice states over the intercom system, “Security Clearance Granted”. The elevator doors slide open with a hydraulic hum. Entering the subterranean batcave home theater, the first noticeable detail is the backlit, highly detailed, lifesize Batsuit standing at attention across the room. With a total of six Batsuits placed throughout the cavernous lair, the custom home theater almost resembles a secret underground, medieval armoury. On the left of the custom home theater is an enormous 180” film screen with Batsuits on each side. Art Deco-inspired architecture and an assortment of Gothic pieces such as large, winged gargoyles tie-in the Gotham City theme. Walking towards the screen are bookcases that look similar to the study bookshelves upstairs, but with the pull of a secret book, these bookshelves slide open to reveal a life-size replica of the Batmobile Tumbler that is 15 feet long and nearly 10 feet wide. A mock, secret tunnel exit is approximately 30 feet long and ends as it turns a corner. At the rear of the theater is a large gas fireplace with “Batcomputer” stations on either side. Various “techie” graphics are displayed on the large screens as well as images of some of Batman’s arch enemies.

Gizmo-Mania focus THE FACEBOOK PHONE

Price – Yet to be disclosed

It’s hard to look at the 3D Max apart from its 3D viewing and recording capabilities - after all, it has 3D in the title. However, beyond that, the phone can present some solid credentials, even by today’s standards. There’s the dual-core processor, dual-lens 5MP stereoscopic camera, as well as full HD capabilities. It’s not as loaded as some of the latest flagships, but it’s got enough power to run whatever you throw at it without a hitch. With the 3D Max, LG has improved on the original while choosing to keep most of the internals the same. The key features include Quad-band GSM and 3G support; 21 Mbps HSDPA and 5.76 Mbps HSUPA; 4.3” 16M-color capacitive; LCD stereoscopic touch screen of WVGA resolution (480 x 800 pixels); Android OS v2.3 Gingerbread with LG 3D UI; Dual-core 1.2GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor, PowerVR SGX540 GPU, TI OMAP4430 chipset; Dual 5 MP auto focus cameras, LED flash; stereoscopic 3 MP pictures, face detection and geotagging; Accelerometer, proximity sensor and an auto-brightness sensor; Front facing camera with video calls; Smart dialing, voice dialing; DivX/XviD video support; Polaris Office document editor; Innovative gesture controls. The Optimus 3D Max is 2mm thinner and 20g lighter than its predecessor and feels noticeably less bulky than the original. The 3D Max now looks more like an “ordinary” smartphone. It has a pleasantly textured back panel, and a much more streamlined design. Considering the minor upgrades, LG has done well to make it a standard-looking package with an extra bonus, rather than a huge device that looks like it must do something special.

It’s only a matter of time before The Facebook Phone releases, and we all know it’s going to be hipster cool. Because Facebook doesn’t just do normal – it does extraordinary. So, what can you expect other than an unassuming bland exterior? Expect minimalist chic – perhaps all-black to counter Apple’s virgin-white. Expect media around the world to mysteriously reveal weeks ahead of its ‘official’ launch that it will indeed be black – but the deepest, darkest night black. Forget Nokia’s 48 mega pixel beauty. After all, THE Facebook Phone ™ doesn’t compete, it rules, purely by its sheer number of indifferent users. No prototype of the phone has been leaked, but we can guarantee that there will be a dedicated camera button (and several sneaky shortcuts to it that you’ll never be aware of) that will keep every snap-happy user amused. There will also be Instagram, but with instant tagging and the (hidden) default option to have it broadcast to every advertiser who’s been eyeing your demographic. You can expect there to be a whole bunch of apps pre-loaded on to the phone by default, with users then having to manually go through each app, find out what it does and then deletes it. More often than not, users will just give up and leave the apps on there. Besides, what harm can they do? Everything will be magnified on the capacitive screen so that when you try to zoom (pinch, swish and twister), you will no doubt hit Like and then somehow Poke that ex you’ve been trying to ignore for years. The Facebook Phone. Coming Soon to rock your world.

If time is money, why waste it by continually smacking the snooze on your bedside alarm clock? This contraption will ensure you understand the literal cost of your morning laziness. The Shredder Clock is just a concept, but it’s a pretty good idea, and a new spin on the notion that money is a great morning motivator. Other alarm clock inventions force you to feed them money before they’ll shut up, or automatically donate to charities that you hate until you get out of bed, but this one lets you see your money going to waste. You could conceivably shred anything you find precious, from letters to pictures, so you wouldn’t have to stock it with Benjamins. Which actually might be a good idea, because as Mashable points out, willfully destroying legal tender is a federal crime. This actually seems like a decent DIY project — it probably wouldn’t take much work to sync a paper shredder to your alarm clock. However, it probably wouldn’t look this cool.

TITLE HOTWHEELS

BMW designers have taken the existing Big Bimmer language and successfully created a new dialect for the company, if you will. However, these “four-door coupe” creations are curiosities for which many develop a love (or, occasionally, distaste) for over the long run. Only the first-generation CLS in 2003-04 absolutely socked it to us at first glance, and since then, everything else in the genre has felt derivative. Well, they essentially are blatant derivatives, right?

The 6 Gran Coupe is a true mix between the 5, the 6, and the 7 Series cars. Its better looking in some key ways than either the latest 5 or 6 Series models – front, rear and profile views, for starters. Still, it’s the 7 Series that comes off feeling like the most complete package for the segment it is meant to represent. At least, that is, for this current generation of large BMW cars.

right between the 200-pound lighter 640i coupe and 245-pound heavier 740i. As for height, the Gran Coupe sits one inch taller than the 6 Series coupe and three inches shorter than the 5 Series sedan. Space for four adults is exceptional and is both extremely well-crafted and comfortable. The four-plusone seating promise in back isn’t exactly a revelation, but it’s possible. Without the spare tire and with the fully folding rear seat, luggage space is a respectable 44.7 cubic ft. The luxury and level of indulgence are spot-on for this new player in the segment. Keeping in mind those various weights and measures just listed, we were really curious to see what the result would be over the slippy road surfaces of Sicily. The overall weight is not a surprise for this 640i, but the 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline-six with 315 horsepower was perfectly fine for our less-than-ambitious requirements of this executive/family/lifestyle car. The 2013 BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe starts deliveries at a base price of 4.25 Million rupees(Approximately).

The 197.1-inch length of the 6 Series Gran Coupe is much closer to that of the standard 7 Series (199.7 inches) than it is to that of the 5 Series (192.9 inches), yet the wheelbase is equal to that of the 5 Series. Front and rear tracks – 63.0 inches and 65.6 inches, respectively – are the same as seen on the 6 Series coupe. Curb weight is quoted at 4,023 pounds, putting the 6GC

TITLE HOTWHEELS

Dubbed the most elegant four-door sports car in the world, the Kahn Aston Martin Rapide is incredibly civilized, but tremendously capable. The moment this car was announced there has been an inherent correctness about the idea of a four-seat, four-door Aston Martin based on the already excellent VH platform. And in the metal the Kahn Rapide does not disappoint. The fundamental proportions are breathtakingly elegant. When people see this car, they tend to smile and point towards the exceptional styling package, consisting of a front bumper grille mesh in matte black, bonnet vents in billet, black brake calipers, side vent grilles in matte black, sports exhaust and privacy glass. And thanks to a lowered suspension system the Kahn Aston Martin Rapide is given a platform to provide an outstandingly supple ride. For a car that’s more than five meters long it feels nimble and compact when you’re driving. The way in which it gathers momentum so smoothly from 3000-4000rpm in the higher gears is testimony to the strong, even flow of torque that’s available; rarely does it seem necessary to venture much beyond this point in the rev range. But when you do, another side of the Rapide’s personality is revealed. Between 5000rpm and the red line, it becomes an altogether more aggressive, more responsive

machine, emitting a fairly magnificent V12 sound from its previously subdued engine bay. Inside is the ‘bespoke touch’, this particular vehicle comes with an exquisite alcantara sport steering wheel and instrument binnacle. The Rapide’s familiar mix of soft English leathers and baremetal switches complements the interior. However, we always provide our customers with what they want. Afzal Kahn could, for example, design for you a vehicle with an exterior the color of your jeans and an interior with seats akin to the shade of, let’s say, a grey t-shirt. Customers could also change the color of the clock, in fact, we can transform the interior of any vehicle into an executive stateroom. Kahn’s wheels sit perfectly, on any vehicle, conveying the essence of the vehicle’s identity. Created using state-of-the art manufacturing and materials technology, the Kahn 21” RSX-F wheels in platinum silver finish and fit all original centre caps. With simple clean lines, soft organic surfaces on the edge of the spoke and a purposeful mechanical centre, the RSX-F wheels are synonymous with elegance and innovation. DOUBLE How much more hype can we give to the new Ducati 1199 Panigale that hasn’t been done already? The successor to the popular and successful 1098/1198, the Panigale is more than just a significant update, it defines what we moto-journos mean when we talk about revolution vs. evolution. Many of the technologies on the new Panigale will break from the mold we’re so used to seeing on sportbikes. First, the frame, or rather, lack of one. The monocoque design of the 1199 means the engine is the frame and the signature trellis design on past Ducatis is no more. This technology borrows directly from the company’s MotoGP experience. Considering how much trouble Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden had this season aboard those MotoGP machines, it will be interesting to see how the new 1199 performs. Of course, the 1199 engine is also

earning much attention, as its highly oversquare dimensions will deliver the highest revving liter-class Twin ever. The “Superquadro” engine of the 1199 also promises to be one of the most powerful V-Twin engines ever. If all the hype is to be believed, then we can expect horsepower figures close to 200 at the crank. That much power is hard to tame for even the best riders, so Ducati has graced the 1199 with an advanced electronics package that should set the bar pretty high for its competitors. We could go on and on about what is easily the most anticipated motorcycle of 2012, but we’ll whet the appetite with this little teaser. We’ll be riding it next month at an exotic location to see if the Panigale measures up to its intense hype. Pricing for the base Panigale starts at Rupees 9,94,748 (Approximately) , the “S” variant lists for 1.2 Million Rupees and the Tricolore is set at 1.5 Million Rupees.

ATTACK BRAMMO EMPULSE

The high-performance electric sportbike from Brammo, the Empulse, was revealed more than a year-and-a-half ago. What makes this electric sportbike special is Brammo’s claim that the Empulse 10.0 is capable of reaching 100 mph, as well as boasting a range of 100 miles on a single charge. Those numbers are halved, at most, in even the best current model production electric bikes on offer from other brands. Also highly innovative is the Empulse’s sixspeed transmission. Most manufacturers of electric motorcycles (including Brammo) use a power controller unit that allows the rider to modulate power via a traditional twist throttle, thereby bypassing the complexity of multi-gear transmission. Powered by a 57-hp motor with a liquidcooled 10-kwh battery, the Empulse claims

a charge time of 10 hours from a 110V outlet. Brammo will also offer a 6.0 and 8.0 version with smaller batteries and lower price points. The three production versions have estimated curb weights of 370 lbs for the Empulse 6.0, 390 lbs for the 8.0, and 410 lbs for the 10.0. The higher-performance bikes will weigh more because of their higher capacity batteries. Empulse MSRPs are priced in order of performance at Rupees 5,52,515, Rupees 6,63,073 , and Rupees 7,73,631 respectively.(Approximate prices) Although a production-level Empulse is long overdue, Brammo has been involved in electric motorcycle racing from the beginning. The Empulse is impressive enough that it’s even caught the attention of mainstream media.

Careers in film industry are no longer a taboo, and there is a rise in the number of people relocating to greener pastures, and movie industry revenue ensured its propagation. Today, India is one of the leaders in film making. Most of us always consider that movies to be a source of entertainment but given a deep thought, we must admit that some movies have a long-lasting effect on us. From the moment we indulge in watching a movie, we are transformed into a new world where our mind is at ease; it forgets everything and concentrates on what is happening on the screen. Everyone, irrespective of their age group or class require recreation, it is an important part of life, and movies provide that avenue. Watching a film in a theatre can be an exhilarating experience in itself. Have you ever faced any of these symptoms?

After watching Guru, did all the budding businessmen feel the need to reach the level Abhishek Bachchan had reached, even though he started from scratch but was able to reach the sky.

Did all daddy’s little daughters cry while watching Akahsamanta or Father of a Bride; just imagining how life would be for them and their fathers post marriage? Just imagining the nostalgia they would be going through got many young girls goosebumps!

Do you find your kids humming songs and enacting scenes from movies like Singham, Dabang and other masala flicks?

Do you fantasize about being as perfect a couple as “Raj and Simran” everytime you watch DDLJ?

Intentionally, or unintentionally movies play a very important role in our day to day lives. Each person has a different personal life and relates some character from various films. Not only, the films, but a section of people are greatly influenced by the celebrities in the movie. Movies have a long-lasting effect on kids as they are highly influenced by the antiques of actors and theme of the story. They tend to establish a fairy world in their mind, which does not exist, in reality. Films are a Universal art form- a platform where you can express and communicate your thoughts or emotions. Just like a painter paints his imagination on a canvas, moviemakers express their emotions, views, angst, joy and so on. People have ideas, and they use films to point out their opinions or viewpoints through cinemascope. Some want to recreate some historical event while some indulge in fantasies. In their objective, they create beautiful scenes, thrilling moments, happy environment, which become their own style and an art form. These inspire others to create their individual unique art of presentation. Films are inspired from our daily lives, be it partially or fully. Most of the films have a certain portion where we really get to see what we know but do not think deeply about it. Coming to Hyderabadi’s addiction to movies, there is a new trend that is catching up at a rapid pace – that of movie premiere’s and special screenings. Theatres are booked months before the release of a movie, and some of these events are held for charity and some just as a social gathering. It has rather become a status symbol to have these special movie screenings.

isbon airport is a relatively easy airport to fly in or out from. The old airport has undergone a major renovation project so that now most flights board via gates without the use of airport shuttle buses. The new gates are a very long way from the main terminal building and most of the distance must be walked therefore leave plenty of time if duty free shopping. Lisbon airport lies with the city limits, only 4.5 miles from the historic district Baixa. There are good public transport (buses) connections to central Lisbon and fixed price taxis. All of the main car rental companies have offices in the airport but the erratic Portuguese driving many come as a shock to many visitors. English is the secondary language of the airport and most customer relation staff speaks English fluently. As part of the long term renovation project a second smaller terminal has opened which handles all of the internal domestic flights (including Madeira and Azores). The second terminal has reduced the overcrowding of the main terminal but there can be substantial queues at check in for

the budget airlines. There is a longer term plan to construct a new airport outside of Lisbon but with all of the economic woes this plan has been quietly postponed. As a stop gap ANA, the company who manages the Lisbon airport, are renewing and upgrading many of the facilities. This does mean that Lisbon airport looks comparatively dated and there could be major construction projects on your arrival. Facilities of Lisbon airport are of the level expected from an international airport but are well below excelling. There is no free public WIFI and the limited selection of food vendors are on the pricey side. Once through security there are only small café styles shops. Considering the length of time to check in, pass through security and walk to budget airlines most passengers won’t have much time for shopping or eating. The arrivals lounge has a much large selection of shops and cafes than the single departures café. In the arrivals there are money changers and ATMs but do break large notes before using public transport. Please leave plenty of time to check into Lisbon Airport as can be very busy during height of the season, security is slow and there can be a long walk to the budget airwalks. It is advised to catch the Aero bus from the airport to the city centre as this is the cheapest and quickest method. The budget air lines always have a very long queue for check in so on line check in is advised. Sep 2012 AVANT GARDE LIFE

KANG AN AT W E S T I N The chef de cuisine at Westin is Mr. Rakesh Anand, who completed his Hotel Management from “WGSHA” Manipal, had his training in ITC Gurgaon. The beginning of this taste filled journey started with ITC Grand Central where Mr. Rakesh was appointed as junior chef and from then onwards there has been no looking back for this culinary master. After ITC, he had moved to United Kingdom to serve as a “Sous Chef” in one of the five Michellin Star Hotels- Amaya, after which he moved as a “Chef De Cuisine” to Tamarind, which is yet another Michellin Star Hotel of United Kingdom. It seems like Mr. Rakesh Anand was born with a silver spoon, to have worked in such prestigious hotels and climbing the success ladder at a rapid pace. What followed suit was to become the chef de cuisine of Kangan at Westin Hyderabad. Flashes of color, the shimmer of ornaments and the mouth-watering aromas of Indian spices converge at Kangan. Chef Rakesh Anand magically crafts refined Northwest frontier cuisine that reinvents Peshawari traditions. Succulent kebabs, freshly baked Indian breads and an eclectic selection of Indian teas introduce guests to the exotic flavors of the region. You will find a large variety to select from the special menu at Kangan for the Kebab Fest.

One look at the restaurant and you can find the place brimming with family and friends indulging in the rustic flavors of traditional, hot, smoky and succulent kebabs team up with chilled beverages. A rendezvous with Mr. Rakesh Anand: How was the journey so far, and why this field?

The journey so far was engaging and full of taste and interesting with experiences in different hotels. My parents were against this choice of career, Dad always wanted me to become a doctor. Even when I was doing Hotel Management, they thought that I would be a manager (smiles). Initially, I was a chef not by choice but by default but, now I am totally into my career and love the challenges, I face everyday. Do you cook at home also?

Yes, I do cook at home but whenever I cook it’s a new creation. I try all fresh recipes at home and fortunately, everyone at homes loves the food and appreciates it. Have you never thought about being a part of reality shows like Master Chef?

I have never thought about it but when I was in U.K., there was a

KITCHENETTE festival of “Taste of London” where every year Michellin Chefs had their own stalls, I had been a part of it. Apart from that I did a few TV shows for CNBC and few other channels. What is your take on Hyderabad?

This is not my first visit to the city; I had been a part of the opening team for ITC’s kebabs and curries. I have been staying in Hyderabad for over a year now but most of my time is spent in the hotel, but things have changed drastically in Hyderabd in a short span of time. Not to forget, night life in Hyderabad is not great but culinary wise this city is the Indian capital of food. The clientale in Hyderabad are very knowledgeable, and we appreciate it. What is the major difference you see between India and U.K.?

People abroad are crazy about Indian food, and they appreciate for everything and anything that they like, in India one tends to get lost in this big market where there is also lack of appreciation. The work culture there is entirely different as you are not only the chef but also in command of things in the kitchen from scratch which serves as a very good learning experience. Where as in India, there are different sections for all departments which make your task easier. If you differentiate between both the places on a culinary point of view, raw materials last longer abroad when compared to India. So, there are pros and cons for both the places. However, I liked India so here I am back to the country! The Chef De Cuisine just shared one of his hot-selling recipes for the readers of AGL:

ECO-FRIENDLY FOODS A BETTER OPTION By Mrs. P. Padma Chief Dietician at Star Hospitals

Eco friendly foods are grown in a manner sensitive to its natural habitat for preserving wildlife and other plants, water supply quality of soil, organically grown and raised, or local, and thus freshly harvested. Follow these easy tips for the sake of your health as well as the environment:

58 AVANT GARDE LIFE

Sep 2012

HEALTH & FITNESS BUY LOCAL • • • • •

Local food generally uses less packaging, is fresher and tastier, and comes in more varieties. It also supports small local growers and lets them get more for their produce by not having to spend so much on packing and processing. Locally grown food tastes better. Produce begins to lose nutrients once it’s picked, so the sooner you eat it, the higher in nutrients it’ll be. Buying local means that you not only support your local economy, you also buy things, which are produced close to you. By doing this you are lowering the costs in terms of fuel, man power, packaging and allied costs benefiting you and lowering pressure on the environment. . Local food is left until it’s ready to be picked, whereas food that travels from distant places loses much of its flavour in transit, or it simply doesn’t have a chance to develop flavour in the first place as it’s picked too early in the season

BUY SEASONAL

Mother Nature knows best wherein she gives us the food that is suitable for us to have, as per the season. By eating seasonal you prevent the use of artificial ripening agents and costs of transporting food in from distant places When produce is in season locally, the relative abundance of the crop usually makes it less expensive. The majority of seasonal produce is grown organically and most probably locally, meaning we can help to support our local farmers and support the local economy. When you buy fruits and vegetables that are NOT in season they have to be brought to you across long distances, they are picked while still immature, to ensure that they don’t spoil along the way. Not only does this affect the fresh taste and aroma of your fruits and vegetables, it causes vitamin degradation and nutrient loss.

BUY ORGANIC

Organic foods are those foods that are produced, processed and packaged without using chemicals. • • • • • • •

Consuming foods that have been produced without use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides is better for your body and the earth. For meat, pick a free range and grass fed produce that doesn’t use growth hormones and unnecessary antibiotics. Buying organic food promotes a less toxic environment for all living things. Feeding the soil with organic matter instead of ammonia and other synthetic fertilizers has proven to increase nutrients in produce, with higher levels of vitamins and minerals found in organic food. An organic farm is the equivalent of reforestation. Industrial farms are the equivalent of clear-cutting of native habitat with a focus on high farm yields. Growing foods organically can protect the topsoil from erosion and is a great way of getting closer to nature. Researchers have found that fruits and vegetables grown organically contain significantly more nutrients such as vitamin c, magnesium, iron, phosphorus, and other essential phytonutrients. Organic food can be more expensive than non-organic produce. If you can only find expensive organic produce in your area, it’s best to stick to veggies grown with lower amounts of pesticides. Melons and grapefruits are also a good option as their thick skins prevent much of the pesticides.

LESSER THE PACKAGING THE BETTER • • •

Purchase foods that use as little packaging as possible to make your food consumption more eco friendly. Buy produce that is not packed in layers of plastic, foil, tin and other stuff that create needless waste. For instance, carry your re – usable egg – case, instead of buying in packaged cartons.

GROW AT HOME

Growing your own produce can be challenging and rewarding; an excellent hobby for the entire family. When you grow at least some of what you consume, the term “eat fresh” takes on a whole new meaning! And as for the satisfaction of eating something you’ve helped grow, well that is matchless! Demand healthier, fresher, local foods in season. Support the Earth’s healthy ecosystem, which in turn supports a healthy you!

The Anti-aging Diet

DEFI NI TI O N:

The anti-aging diet is one that restricts calorie intake by 30–50% of normal or recommended intake with the goal of increasing human lifespan by at least 30%. People on the diet also have improved health providing they consume adequate vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients.

Drinking enough water has the reverse effect, and plumps up the skin and flushes out the toxins that cause a dull complexion and wrinkles. Room temperature water is best, but there are plenty of other “liquid-facelifts” out there. Soya milk is a good choice. Studies show it helps speed up the production of collagen – the “building bricks” of skin. As we age, collagen breaks down, so wrinkles form. But by keeping collagen levels high, you’ll stay younger looking for longer.

Most of us would like to lose a few pounds, but here’s a diet that will help you look and feel younger too. “Food is a great way to ward off wrinkles and boost energy levels. If you choose wisely, your weekly shop can be an effective anti-ager, as well as helping to boost your health and keep you slim.”

GE T A FRUITY FACE LIFT:

TUCK I NTO O I LY F I S H :

If you want to look younger, fill up on fruit. First is kiwi fruit – one of the richest sources of vitamin C around. Just one kiwi fruit contains 100 per cent of your recommended daily intake.

Celebrities tuck into oily fish to keep wrinkles at bay. Eat plenty of oily fish because the essential fats found in them provide skin-loving antioxidants and mop up the free radicals that can cause wrinkles and prematurely aged skin.

Vitamin C is fantastic for skin because it helps build collagen and mops up ageing toxins.

The best sources of this essential fatty acid include salmon, mackerel, fresh tuna steaks and sardines. The high protein content of oily fish also helps keep skin firm – and has the added bonus of keeping you slim.

So slice one up in your salad or sandwich – they are relatively high in fat and calories, but it’s the healthy type of fat (unsaturated), which actually revs up your metabolism. Have a portion of berries every day too. Blue, black and red berries all protect the body against ageing because they are full of antioxidants called Phyto-chemicals.

DRINK UP :

Sprinkle a small handful on your cereal every morning, or snack on them in between meals. Lastly, try some prunes and raisins.

The biggest anti-ager is water. It’s been said before many times, but water really is essential for good health and good looks. The reason skin looks so grey, dry and wrinkled after too many cocktails is because alcohol dehydrates the skin. 60 AVANT GARDE LIFE

Avocados are also a must-have; they are jam-packed with vitamins A and E, which are very effective at fighting wrinkles.

HEALTH & FITNESS

SKIN- L O VI NG C A R B S : Forget the Atkins diet – if you want great skin, you need carbs. Porridge oats are a great way to start the day and look younger. As well as keeping you energized all morning, studies show that oats contain high levels of a mineral called Silicic acid that plumps up the cells in skin, creating a youthful bounce. It also slows down the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

4. Apricots: They are full of lutein, an antioxidant Harvard University scientists discovered helps fight off the ageing effects of the sun. Top tip: Snack on them between meals, or slice them fresh on your porridge. 5. Spinach: Like apricots, spinach is also a fantastic source of lutein, which wards off sun damage and ageing sun spots.

So go for a bowl every morning, and top with berries for a double anti-ageing whammy.

Top tip: Add a handful to a stir-fry or use in place of lettuce in salads.

Bread is another skin savior. But not just any old bread – ditch the white, and go for multigrain bread instead (ideally loaded with seeds).

6. Tomatoes: Their magic ingredient is lycopene, a powerful antioxidant. As well as reducing the risk of certain cancers, lycopene also protects the skin against sun damage and keeps it looking younger.

It’s full of selenium, which fights the ageing process by preserving the elasticity in your skin.

AG E- B U S TI NG S U P E R F O O D S : 1. Almonds: They’re packed full of omega-3 fats and protein, which help skin repair itself. Plus they’re a great source of vitamin E, which studies show can prevent wrinkles. Top tip: Have a small handful every afternoon. 2. Olive oil: A recent study in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition looked at the link between olive oil and wrinkles. Scientists found that people living in hot countries with fewer wrinkles all had high intakes of olive oil. Top tip: Swap vegetable oil for olive oil, or drizzle it cold on salads

Top tip: Slice them up in your sarnies or add them to salads. Lycopene is also found in ketchup, tomato pasta sauces and pizza toppings. 7. Broccoli: It’s great for fighting free radicals in the body. Free radicals are harmful substances found in the environment, such as pollution, which age us. Anything that mops up free radicals, like broccoli, is great at keeping skin young. Top tip: Chop them up and add to stirfries, curries and even lasagne. 8. Red wine: It boosts circulation to the skin, plus it’s full of antioxidants. Top tip: Enjoy a small glass of red wine a few nights a week.

3. Adzuki beans: These are a great source of zinc, a mineral that helps your skin repair itself. Studies show zinc can also help with acne. Top tip: Buy them canned from the supermarket and add them to salads and stir-fries.

Q&A

I’m a 24 year old girl. It seems very strange to me that I have been having really strong sexual desires from a very young age. I’ve been masturbating since as early as 13 years. I’m very sensitive by nature. I crave for a faithful life partner. My disbelief in one-night stands plus my family values – these two things stop me from going for sexually oriented relationships which otherwise I’m dying to plunge into. I’ve never had a boyfriend. Guys have proposed to me but I’ve turned them down either thinking of my family or because I don’t see my Mr. Right in them. I desperately want someone to love me, emotionally and physically. Where am I going wrong? What should I do? Please help. There’s nothing you’re doing wrong. It’s really, really hard to meet the person who’s perfect for you. Often, we find love when we least expect it, so maybe it might be a good idea to not put so much pressure on yourself. You’re just 24 – Relax and enjoy all that life has to offer, love and marriage will happen when they’re meant to. If this wait and watch 62 AVANT GARDE LIFE

approach isn’t what you want, you can get more proactive in your search. There are lots of ways to meet new people – at work, matrimonial postings in newspapers and online, through a marriage bureau or through your family and friends. Why don’t you tell your parents that you’re ready to start thinking about matrimony, so they can also help you find the right guy? And as far as your sexual urges go, they’re also very normal. There’s no one right age to start masturbating, whatever works is what’s right for you. A few days back my husband and I were in our bedroom, when our 6 year old son walked in on us while we were in the act, thanks to us not making sure the door was locked. My husband quickly got off, and we covered up, but ever since this incident he keeps talking, including in front of guests, and apparently also in school about all sorts of embarrassing stuff about his father’s private parts and his parents ‘sleeping on the bed and doing bad things’. We’ve

tried cajoling him, threatening him, and actually hit him once or twice, but I’m at my wits end in trying to get him to stop talking about it. What do I do? This must have been embarrassing for sure! But it’s something that can happen to anyone. Please don’t resort to hitting your son, the poor boy is confused enough by what he saw. He doesn’t understand it and it might have scared him. Have you tried making light of the situation? All the cajoling and threatening is putting a lot of importance on the situation, as a result of which your boy keeps thinking about it. Kids get drawn to puzzles and things they’re forbidden from. So, why don’t you try and pretend like it’s not a big deal? Laugh it off and ignore him when he talks about this. Change the subject and divert his attention with something else. Kids are easy to distract and soon, he’ll have other things to talk about. I am a 34 year old male, married for the last 10 years. My wife desires we should go out to some other country

HEALTH & FITNESS have fun taking turns being loosely tied or blindfolded and letting the other roam around your body. And don’t forget sex toys. Many men get incredibly turned on watching their partner playing with a toy — or being pleasured with one themselves. Is there such a thing as having too much sex? My husband and I have sex at least once a day, sometimes more. We’ve been going at this pace for almost five years.

and have fun-filled sex romps – she with other guy and me with other girl. I don’t mind if it happens for once, but I am curious to know if this will affect our relationship in the long run. An open marriage is not for everyone. It might sound fascinating now and the temptation of the unknown, of sex with a stranger might seem alluring. But after the act is done and reality sets in, issues like jealousy and suspicion can very well set in. It’s one thing to think about it and a whole different thing to actually do it. Not everyone can be ok with the knowledge that their spouse has been with another person. This can create havoc in your marriage. Why don’t you try to figure out why your wife wants this? Is she dissatisfied with your relationship? Maybe you can spice things up – try out new positions, play some sex games, try indulging in other fantasies that don’t involve different people? At the end of the day, if sex with strangers is what both of you really want and you’re clear about the possible repercussions, it’s entirely your call. But be very honest right from the start and make sure you’re both on the same page. I feel self-conscious about giving oral sex. Can you advice me something that might help me to enjoy it more? News flash: You probably aren’t bad at it… you just need more practice. Here are some tips to get you feeling more comfortable with going “downtown”: Shower together in a sensual way, slowly soap each other down, and start to caress each other. Then towel yourselves dry to get ready for foreplay. Smear something tasty like chocolate sauce or whipped cream over his package and lick it off gently. This baby step will at least get you more comfortable with his south-of-the-border region. Part

come from being afraid to swallow. So don’t! When he’s ready to climax, slip a Kleenex in place to catch his semen. He shouldn’t be expecting you to swallow when you feel this way. Then kick back so he can give you oral sex in return! I’m six months pregnant. As soon as my husband and I get started, I get selfconscious and I don’t want him to touch me for fear of the weight I’ve gained. What can I do to get our sex life back on track? You’re a classic case of the “I think I’m fat, so he’ll think I’m fat too” complex. The thing is, the majority of men see an overall picture of the woman they love. They don’t notice a little excess weight here, a little bulge there. Instead they see the whole package without the details. Research proves it too. You can do a simple test at home to prove it to yourself. Ask your husband to find, for example, the mustard in the fridge, and you’ll see he takes far longer than you would. This is because men see the whole fridge and not the detail of the little items in it. So hold that thought in mind and believe that he wants to touch and hold you. Talk yourself up every day. Then go hop in the sack — because you’re one hot package.

Most couples find that after 6 to 12 months, things cool down, and sex becomes much less frequent — so you are a couple in a million! There’s absolutely no need for you to worry that either or both of you will burn out. What’s important is that you feel you can be honest with each other and pipe up if you’re not in the mood. For example, if one of you is tired or stressed out, it’s important that the other understands sex may not be on the menu that night (and is cool with that). Otherwise, go ahead and enjoy! I hope you will read this mail soon and help me to overcome my problem. I have been married for 2 months now. Every time we want to have sex he says he cannot do it because my vagina muscles are too tight .We want to consummate our marriage but so far we have failed to have sex . He is frustrated over this and worried but does not show me though. Please advise how I should overcome this problem. Thank you Sex is a combination of a lot of factors, with comfort and trust ranking high among them. Since it’s still early in your marriage, your husband and you should have an honest discussion about how you’re feeling. Don’t try to force it, just relax and enjoy each other’s bodies and company. Everything else will follow naturally. If it doesn’t, maybe you can consult a sexologist.

My husband thinks things like roleplaying are weird. What are some fun ways heat things up without my husband feeling uncomfortable? It’s not a surprise that your guy thinks role-playing is silly — many guys do. But it’s important for him to realize that there’s a difference between role-playing and simply telling each other about your fantasies. If you describe to him in detail what you fantasize about, it can be incredibly erotic. You can try wearing super-sexy clothes and giving him a lap dance. Or playing around with a scarf: Just Sep 2012 AVANT GARDE LIFE

EMERGENCY TIP

Save the Heart T

he heart attack or acute myocardial infarction is a medical emergency which demands immediate management; so the first aid treatment becomes an essential means to save some one’s life. Patients having heart attack experience the above mentioned signs and symptoms of which the severe pain is the most intolerable. Before shifting such patients to the hospital; without wasting the precious time one should try to provide the pre hospital care or first aid. Time is definitely the most crucial factor in such cases. Time wasted is the muscle lost (the delay in care degenerates the myocardial muscle fibers). You can manage if you see any person with heart attack:

Emergency call: Call 108 / 1066 or any other local emergency service providers. Loosen the clothing of the patient. Certain positions such as semi-sitting position can provide a sort of relief to the patient. Ensure strict bed rest. Avoid any excessive movements. Remember the mnemonic MONA:

M for MORPHINE O for OXYGEN N for NITRATES A for ASPIRIN • • • •

Tablet morphine, an analgesic may be administered in the dose of 10-15 mg to relieve the pain. Ensure that adequate ventilation is present for the patient; this meets the oxygen demands of the body. If prescribed, administer nitrates sublingually; they dilate the coronary vessels and relieve pain. Give aspirin quickly if advised by your doctor; it has anti-platelet aggregating action; it thus inhibits clogging of the thrombi into the vessels. • About two-thirds of the deaths are due to the arrthymias which occur within the first two hours of the attack; to prevent it lidocaine 200mg injection can be administered intramuscularly. • Begin CPR, if the patient becomes unconscious and goes in the state of cardiac arrest and you are trained enough, to perform it, to rescue the victims life.

EXCLUSIVE COVER STORY

The Lone Wolf...

By Esha Jobanputra

If hulk were to be made in Tollywood, he would surely be the director’s first choice. He is the perfect fit for the tall, dark and handsome tag. He is Rana Daggubatithe current sensation hailing from Tollywood’s first family. He has striked all the right chords with his debut Leader and seems to be doing the same with each and every step of what seems to be a carefully crafted sojourn in Bollywood also stepping into Hollywood. In an exclusive interview with AGL, Rana opens up about movies, family, relationships and rumours.

EXCLUSIVE COVER STORY

Was it not a risk to launch yourself with a serious political drama like Leader? The very truth of being in the film industry is a gamble. No one knows what is right and what is wrong. To cite an example a Hollywood flick “Dreams” written and directed by Akira Kurosawa, produced by Steven Spielberg and many other legendary people was a disaster. For a matter of fact, Leader was a perfect launch pad because at the time of release, there were a lot of political disturbances and confusion in Hyderabad and the story completely related to the situation then. Leader was a weapon to voice out the public opinion. I believe it was a complete entertainment package.

Indian lead in this American film. The movie backdrop is set in Los Angeles.

Your launch pad movie “Leader” was a blockbuster hit, how was the feeling? The release of Leader was under bizarre conditions due to the political unrest and various other issues. The film’s release was delayed by almost six months. However, all is well that ends well; the film was appreciated and accepted unlike many other political films, which take a back seat post release. Leader was a movie that explained the public view without violence.

Tollywood Vs Bollywood There cannot be a comparison between any of the film industries. Both the industries have different story telling patterns and distinct story lines as well. The reason I signed Dum Maro Dum was because I knew I could have never played a Goan musician in a Tollywood film. Even Tamil films are generally raw, rustic and rooted to Tamil Nadu and cannot be made in Telugu or Hindi. So, to sum it up, I can say each industry has its own cutting edge and cannot be compared.

twitter/aglmagazine

What is the next movie in your goodie bag? The next movie I am doing is a bilingual film and is going to be released in Telugu and Tamil simultaneously. It is Krishnam Vande Jagathgurum in Telugu and Ongaram in Tamil, it’s a story of a theatre actor set between the heartland of Bellary and revolves around the mining mafia.

facebook/aglmagazine

Is it only acting or do you plan to take up the family production business too? Before acting, I was into producing, and I will continue producing films.

You are born with a silver spoon, and a total filmy background was the route to stardom easier because if that? Yes, I got an access to knowledge and information that very few people get. Even the things I learnt at my acting school were similar to the lessons I had got from my family since childhood. I had a platform to stand on but on the flip side I had no option of failure as well.

When are you joining the parade of star sons getting married? It is weird that within a span of six months I see all my friends getting engaged or married. They have all taken a different step. I still think I am a kid and not at all looking in that direction as of now. I am doing films in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil and English and work keeps me on my toes. You are inclined towards animation as well, tell us something about that? I was always inclined towards animation and had done a professional course in Industrial photography as well. I also had a visual effects company a few years back, when we set up that company people thought it was a not so cool thing to do, but now we cannot have a single movie without those visual effects. What is the importance of friends in your life? My friends, family and films form a very strong part of my personality. I have friends with whom I have grown up and a few friends from the industry. I cannot think of life without them. They are and will continue to be a primary part of my life always. What was your favourite movie in 2012? It would undoubtedly be Eega, as I said before I love animation, and here I see a film where a mosquito is the hero. I really liked the movie. Which character of the movies you have done do you relate to the most? All the movies I do are character intensive and distinctive. All characters give me something, and something of your own is given to the character. I relate to the characters in all my movies from Leader to Department.

What does luxury mean to you? I was lucky enough to get whatever I wanted. For me, luxury is my staff, who have stuck with me from my visual effect days and are not from any filmy background. What is your philosophy in life? There is no substitute to hard work. One needs to be pro-active and positive always. Life is about being sincere and not serious. Do you have people from your friends and family who criticize you? I do not have family and friends who praise me! (Laughs). Who has been your best co-star? The best co-star, I have worked with is Suhasini garu, who played the role of my mother in my debut film – Leader. I drew

a lot of knowledge from her. Though I was born and brought up in a filmy background but Leader was my first time facing the camera, and she made me feel really comfortable. Ten years down the lane where do you see yourself? Ten years is too far…. Still, I see myself as a complete movie package of an actor, director, producer and many more things. How do you handle competition with your counterparts who happen to be your childhood friends also? Strangely, my path or the kinds of films I do are entirely different and never drew any comparison with any of my actor friends. What are your special plans for your sister’s wedding? My house has turned into a movie production house working towards the D day which is in December. The Lagna patrika is the first function in this month. Everyone is super excited about the ceremonies and the wedding. I have not signed any films till

the end of this year, so I can actively be a part of the wedding. Well, you have been linked with many heroines and virtually been hitched too! Who is the lucky one? Controversies are a part and parcel of a single guy in the film industry. I have had link ups even before my first film released. Each films’ promotion gives new gossip feed which fades with time. What is your idea of your life partner- an actress or a damsel next door? That is a very superficial thing to be considered, a life partner is a person who is a friend first and knows who you are and what you are irrespective of who she is an actress or a girl next door.

You are active on social-networking sites, what is your take on social networking? I really think that it is the best platform to have a voice of your own and put forward your thoughts to a wider set of people. It helps me to follow trends from Hollywood and gives me news, which I cannot get instantly otherwise. Given a chance to live your dream role, which would be the role, you would want to portray? When a film is made it has been made for good. According to me, actors do not choose the story a story chooses them. It comes out of destiny. Whoever is destined will do the film, I do not believe in remakes. One last word to AGL readers? Time is temporary and films are forever.

The Bear and the Bees

A

bear came across a log where a swarm of bees had nested to make their honey. As he snooped around, a single little bee flew out of the log to protect the swarm. Knowing that the bear would eat all the honey, the little bee stung him sharply on the nose and flew back into the log. This flew the bear into an angry rage. He swatted at the log with his big claws, determined to destroy the nest of bees inside. This only alerted the bees and quick as a wink, the entire swarm of bees flew out of the log and began to sting the bear from head to heel. The bear saved himself by running to and diving into the nearest pond. Moral: It is better to bear a single injury in silence than to bring about a thousand by reacting in anger.

SILVER SCREEN MACAULAY CULKIN`S PARENTS CONCERNED ABOUT HIS HEALTH ‘Home Alone’ star Macaulay Culkin’s estranged father Kit and stepmother Jeanette Krylowski say they are very concerned about their son’s health. Kit has seen the photo. But he can not talk about it. He just can not, because it hurts him too much. Of course he’s worried, he is incredibly concerned,” Jeanette said. “When I saw the photos I thought, `Oh no, this is not good. S.S.Rajamouli... This name is synonymous with success in the Telugu film industry. He began his career by assisting renowned director K. Ragavendra Rao. Rajamouli made sure he revised the commercial standards of Tollywood. Jakkanna, as he is fondly called by his actors, got the name for the fact that he gives that kind of time and dedication in carving out a script and its storyline. And it sure shows at the box office! Who could have pulled off a movie based on Rugby(Sye) and make Telugu crowds love it? He pushed barriers, made a statement with Magadheera and believed that Telugu audience deserved more than what they are used to watch. This sensational director proved the same when this movie became the highest grosser. While everyone thought of him as super commercial and a star director, he surprised everyone with Maryada Rammana, which starred comedian, Sunil as the lead. His latest film Eega created a buzz much before its release and turned out to be a blockbuster! The VFX graphics, direction and screenplay of this film were hand-in-glove with Hollywood animation movies. Few directors possess the super quality of being able to transform an actor to a star. And Rajamouli is one of them.

TITLE

Few excerpts from an interview with this skillful, sensible and practical filmmaker…

You are the most successful director in the Telugu film Industry. How do you define success? I believe success is something that is not in our hands. The results can never be changed. Of course, we all look for success- it is definitely important! But I don’t make films looking for success. I try to enjoy the making of it- because that is entirely in my hands. Success to me is when all the people who have invested in my film make money out of it. For me, success is very commercial in a sense.

You are being offered movies in Bollywood and in Tamil film industry. Why haven’t you tried the waters there? I haven’t been offered any movies from Bollywood. However, I do have some offers from the Tamil film industry. I am looking at them, and have decided to make bilinguals from now on. Since the budgets are high now, it makes sense to make bilinguals.

Can we see you directing a Bollywood version of any of your films soon? No. I don’t like remakes. Moreover I don’t like to make the same film twice. Even a movie like Magadheera I wouldn’t want to make it once again because I spent two years of my life on it. I wouldn’t want to spend another two years on the same project. What was the most challenging part in the filming of your latest movie Eega? Animation. I never had any experience before in animation. So it was tough to learn about animation and working at the same time. It was a challenging experience, but I enjoyed it. I worked hard but enjoyed every bit of it. What can we expect from your next movie, which stars Prabhas? I am working on a few lines. I still have to zero in on the subject. It will be in the genre of adventure and spectacle. 88 AVANT GARDE LIFE

Sep 2012

Who is your inspiration? Both professionally and personally. Personally, it is Dr. Jayaprakash Narayan of Lok Satta. I adore him. I respect and am inspired by self-made men. I love rags-to-riches stories and am inspired by people who have made it big through their own efforts and hard work. I look up to Ramoji rao garu and in the film field, I respect Shyam Prasad reddy garu for his passion for cinema. Professionally director KV Reddy garu is my inspiration. Do you believe in rebirth and karma? No I don’t! (Laughs).

How do you make movies in concepts you don’t believe, in reality? I see emotion in rebirth, and I need that emotion to make my story work. If I see it working in the script, I make a movie on it. It doesn’t mean I believe in it.

They say one has to always keep work and family separate. But your team consists of most of your closest family members. How is it working like that? Does the work tension not reflect on your interpersonal relationships? Not at all. In fact, it enhances it. We spend enough time together (smiles). I consider myself extremely lucky in this aspect. All my family members understand the way I work, and they love cinema. Much before we got into films, we were film lovers. Once we got into this field professionally, the love for cinema just transferred. They all know how to work for a film, and they contribute accordingly. How do you remain so humble even after tasting this kind of success? I get criticized for being arrogant and also for being extremely humble at times. Basically, as a human being, we are prone to have changing moods and shouldn’t be expected to be the same every time. As a person I am very moderate. Humility is definitely not my forte, at the same time I am not arrogant either. Yes, I do take pride in myself for what I have done, and I am humble because I am a

DIRECTOR’S TAKE In the present young directors, whom do you see a tremendous potential in? Sukumar and Trivikram Srinivas are my favorites in the present brigade of directors. In the upcoming directors, I see potential in Hanu Raghavapudi- who is debuting with Andala Rakshasi.

Rajamouli as a father is very…? Balanced- I would say. I pamper and at the same time I discipline them when required. (smiles).

realist. I realize and understand that there is a lot more to achieve yet.

Are you a book lover? What is your favorite book? Yes, I love books. I read a lot of fiction. Fountainhead by Ayn Rand is one of my favorite books. I also like atlas shrugged by the same author. Other books I like are Wilbur Smith’s adventure novels and Jeffrey Archer’s classics. In telugu, I like the works of Yandamoori Veerendranath and Malladi. What is your favorite place in Hyderabad? The place really doesn’t matter to me, it’s the people who I am with that matters. And the places I frequent to also keep changing. What is your favorite restaurant in Hyderabad? ‘So...’- It is a cosy bistro-style restaurant in Jubilee Hills.

Do you own any pets? I used to. Both my dogs died this year. Hakka and Gallop – they were both Labradors. I got Hakka during the making of Sye and gallop during the making of Magadheera. What is your ideal vacation? Spending time with family is my ideal vacation. Like I said earlier, place doesn’t really matter to me. It is the people that matter.

Tell us about your relationship with your father, who is a veteran writer himself. Every son has some kind of hero worship to his father, and I am no exception. I used to and still think he is the most knowledgeable person on Earth. Our relationship revolves around cinema. We eat, drink and sleep movies. We constantly keep talking about films and emotions. Do you write a script keeping a ‘star’ in mind? I develop a script keeping a star in mind, however the basic plots are done without keeping any particular actor in mind.

Who was your favorite actor of the ones you worked with till date? When I make a film with an actor, I completely adore them. Each actor I worked with have different shades, capabilities and advantages to them. It is unfair to compare them.

Can people without a Godfather survive in this industry? Any word of advice to the upcoming directors? Yes, they definitely can. In a way, the industry is very success oriented. It runs after success. The whole “Godfather” phenomenon is a myth- It is not realistic. No one Godfather’s anyone without success. Once you are successful you are instantly surrounded by many Godfathers. To upcoming director’s I would say- ‘work on scripts that YOU like’. The chances to be successful are high when you make movies in which you believe in. Though no one can guarantee success, the chances to succeed can be higher when directors make movies on lines that they like and believe in. If not a director what would you have been? Who knows?! (laughs). I would probably be in a job related to sports or travel. I know for sure that I would definitely not be in a nine-tofive job! Sitting at a desk for a whole day is definitely not my thing.

What does luxury mean to you? What are your most luxurious buys till date? Luxury for me is when I find time to NOT do any work for 3-4 days. Again, two days of idleness will bore me to death. So, my luxury can’t stay with me for more than twenty four hours! Land Rover Discovery III was my most luxurious buy till date. I got it during the making of Yamadonga, and it stayed with us for four years. We sold it off, and I am planning to buy Discovery IV now. One movie (other than yours) that is close to your heart? So many! To name a few- Braveheart and Mayabazar.

What is your biggest passion, after movies? Games. I love playing Tennis, Volleyball and Cricket. Reading books and travelling are my other passions. Sep 2012 AVANT GARDE LIFE

to sizzle. A little bit of planning and a whole lot of love will do the trick. Your goal should be to woo each other with romantic gestures, genuine sentiment, and hot passion. This guide to your first time having sex as married people should help. Read on and start living the dream...

By Pauleen Chakravorty

ROMANCE EACHOTHER

Sex is nothing without romance, especially on a day as romantic as your wedding. You must do whatever it takes to infuse the night with romance (even if you start to feel as exhausted from a full day of celebrating). The wedding night, after all, is just for the two of you.

PREPARE YOUR BODY If it is your first time having sex (or the first time for your spouse), you should prepare your body for sex. Women can feel pain the first times they have sex, but there are things you can do to minimize the pain – from going slow and being patient to using lubricant. Get the details on what can be done long before the wedding night itself. Spend lots of time on foreplay to make sure everyone is hot and ready to go.

SET THE STANDARDS Think of your wedding night as the first night of the rest of your sex life. From the start of your sexual relationship, you should be open and comfortable with one another. You should also take responsibility for your own sexual pleasure. In other words, make a plan on how you are going to continue to pleasure one another and keep things exciting.

STRIVE TO IMPROVE Sex, like most things in life, can always get better. Living out reasonable fantasies, using sex toys, or simply talking might make your sex life go from boring to spicy. The hard part is determining what the two of you need and how to merge those needs.

SPARKS SHOULD FLY Married sex runs the risk of getting boring. For couples who have had lots of sex ahead of the wedding night, this can happen from the very first night. But you can do something about a lack of passion. Court one another – and put the zing back in your sex life. Sep 2012 AVANT GARDE LIFE

RELATIONSHIPS ounds familiar? Without a doubt, mother and daughter relationships are the most intense of all relationships, often turning their home into a battleground during adolescence. Whether the reasons for intense mother and daughter relationships are physical (some believe the dueling hormones of menstruation and menopause contribute to the strife) or societal (just when girls need independence, their moms need connection), the troubled bond is too important to ignore.

The good news is, according to Psychology Today, despite conflicts and complicated emotions, the mother and daughter relationship bond is so strong that 92% of adult women report positive mother and daughter relationships. What can you do today to improve the state of your union?

HERE ARE A FEW SUGGESTIONS.

Choose your battles carefully, and wait to find a good time to speak about what’s troubling you. You might say, “Mom, there’s something really important I need to discuss with you. When would be a good time for us to talk? Use a respectful tone and listen carefully, even if what you are hearing is not making you happy. No eye rolling. Just because you come from different generations and have different outlooks, doesn’t mean mother and daughter can’t be heard and understood. Make time for mother and daughter relationships. Mommy and me classes should continue throughout your lives. Join a book club. Take a cooking class. Start a fitness regimen. Try out for a play together. Friendship and learning with mother and daughter relationships go hand in hand. Volunteer together. Helping others often brings out the best in people, making us thankful for what we have and for those in our lives we love. Write to each other. If there is something you find difficult to say, send a thoughtfully constructed written message to clear the air.

Show appreciation for mother and daughter relationships. When Mother’s Day or your mom’s birthday is near, you have the perfect opportunity. Don’t be afraid to go the sentimental route. Spend time choosing the perfect card, and then think about what you want to say on this once-a-year occasion. Include yourself and your relationship with your mom in the gift you pick out. Picture frames filled with a shared tradition or memory always works. What about a motherhood box: a chest for her to fill with her favorite keepsakes with compartments and pouches for everything from a lock of hair to your first report card. At your local print center, you can make personalized placemats, mouse pads, or travel mugs with photocopied birth certificates and favorite snapshots. Of course you can never go wrong with the old standbys: flowers, breakfast in bed, or a piece of jewelry!

Fashion not a profession By Esha Jobanputra

Shravan Kumar Ramaswamy is undoubtedly an asset for the city fashion map, an ace designer who has his roots in Hyderabad. He is a person who has god gifted designer instincts. A graduate from London School of Fashion Designing, he strongly believes that he is not a part of the rat race. What matters to him is his work and the look of satisfaction on the person’s face who adorns his design. It is not a profession but a religion for him. You are born and brought up in Hyderabad, how do you rate Hyderabad on the fashion scale? The fashion scene has been picking up since the last five years. Hyderabad is quite well turned out in terms of fashion. People here are very specific about what they want to wear and what they need. I must say Hyderabad is at par with Mumbai on the fashion scene and is definitely the most fashionable city in the whole of South India. What exactly is color psychology? Color psychology is all about integrating color with mood. Color plays a major role in defining the mood of a person, and it accentuates the mood in every sense. It is simple, dress up so that your mood gets better! For me, it is a must to know a person’s personality and character before designing for them. What is your message to all the upcoming designers?

Sep 2012

There is no shortcut to success, and you cannot spell success without “U.” You should be very happy and understanding when you are working. Design feature and design culture are very original things, and it is inborn- it cannot be taught. Designing is like an ocean, it is never ending. The only thing constant in fashion is change. Do not follow trends or be bent up on setting trends. Make your mark with a signature style. Trends come and go, but signature mark stays. How was your journey to reach this level of fame and appreciation? I really believe I haven’t reached anywhere yet. I am at the same place where I started but the difference is people started liking my work. Fashion is my religion it is in my system. I am not a rat to be in any rat race! I am untouched by the number game and prefer to just be the best at what I am rather than comparing myself to others.

TITLE Tollywood is following suit in fashion being at par with Bollywood, what is the main difference between the fashion trends of both the industries? I don’t think there are any differences, in particular. The grandeur of a film’s styling always depends on the budget of the movie. Most importantly, the styling or designing of any film, no matter Tollywood or Bolllywood is theme-based. What are the main factors you keep in mind while designing? The most important thing I ask myself is does this piece, I design suit the person? Furthermore, the time when it is worn is very important to me. I keep in mind if it is worn in the morning or noon or evening and also if it is ceremonial wear, casual or party wear. Who according to you is the most stylish celebrity? Sonam Kapoor. She is the most stylish and well turned out celebrity according to me.

Your recent fashion show at The Park was a huge success. How many months of planning and designing was put for the grand finale? It was a celebration of the festivals of India. We put in a lot of time and effort into this grand finale, and it truly showed. It took me 4-6 months to set this whole event up, and I must say, it really paid off. Modeling is a stepping stone to tinsel town, what is your take on it? No, I don’t agree. Both modeling and acting are two different crafts and they you do not need to be a model to act. How was your experience while designing for the Chennai International Fashion Week? It was a really nice experience. I have tried the kalamkari kalyanam in this particular fashion week. Kalamkari is a block print from Machlipatnam, Andhra Pradesh. It is usually not adorned much by people, and I had this theme to make people acknowledge and buy Kalamkari. It feels good to be able to give the Kalamkari artists a better living. Your work is greatly influenced by the art Sep 2012 AVANT GARDE LIFE

FASHION INTERVIEW of Raja Ravi Varma and the Nawabs of Hyderabad, how do you bring that about in your design? Yes, I am a total R&D kind of a designer. I do a lot of research and develop the ideas for my collections. In the eighteen years of my career, I have been influenced by a lot of artists and cultures. I am now working with a lot of artists from Calcutta. My collection is inspired by the Hyderabadi culture called Zanana. It basically reflects the color, dressing and limitations that women folk of Hyderabad have while dressing up. Apart from CIFW, your designs were recently showcased in SIIMA, and famous Tollywood stars walked the ramp with your collections; how was the experience at SIIMA? It was simple. Dressing celebrities is as beautiful as dressing up the common man. It was an amazing experience, and the sequence dedicated to the weavers of Andhra Pradesh was my favorite part of the event. Is it difficult designing for celebrities? Not at all, celebrities are human beings too and when you understand and relate to them, it makes designing an easy process. It is the people that make them “stars” and consider them unreachable.

PLUS

If you believe in what you want to get out of fashion, and know your client well, designing flows like a dream. I don’t believe only designers make good clothes; it is how, where, what and for whom you make it. How does it feel when your name is being ticked on the best designers list? Clueless! Getting name and fame doesn’t really matter to me because it doesn’t really last! What lasts is people’s love and appreciation for your work. What kind of a dress is an all-time heritage wear? According to me, it is a half saree/ Saree for a woman and a closed jacket for men. Which is your best design till date? It is like asking me who is your favorite child of all your children! (Laughs). I don’t just make clothes to sell, I make babies and give them away soulfully. One last word for AGL readers? AGL has been there, done that! People who read it are equally fashion conscious too. Keep reading and be a go-getter in life.

Your designed wedding attire is the most important dress for a girl’s D-day, how do you make sure that the bride looks her best in the outfit designed by you? There are some basic rules I follow. Firstly, the bride has to be comfortable. Secondly, she should know what she wants. Thirdly, I don’t like to surprise the bride. I go according to what she needs and wants. Lastly, her wedding dress should be her second skin. If not a designer, what would your choice of career be? I would definitely have been a cook, if not a designer. My family is into the Hotel business, so it is in the blood. I absolutely love cooking and can cook everything- from Biryanis, to pastas, to puddings, to risottos. Designing is a niche field, how difficult was it to make a mark on the fashion map of India? Sep 2012 AVANT GARDE LIFE

HOROSCOPE ARIES

(March 21 - April 20) Aren’t we the Big Brain this month? Well at least you’ll feel like it. Your intellect may really surprise you. What comes out of your mouth could actually catch those around you by surprise. Profound is the word that comes to mind the strongest. This holiday season should be one of the best you have had in some time. There is more than a chance of new romance if single. Rekindled flames for those attached. There will be plenty of cash to cover your celebrating and friends calling from all over the place. Fame and popularity does have its burdens. Enjoy.

TAURUS (April 21 - May 21)

Life will feel so good this month. There is more than just a little chance that your careful planning could win the heart of a new love interest. If not, those in your life will be amazed by your financial prowess. Well done, Taurus! There is something of a warning for you around the 13th to the 15th. If planning a party, make sure your spouse is included at every level. Communication is very important at this time and make sure there are no crossed wires. As you cruise into the holidays you should feel a true sense of accomplishment and self-satisfaction.

GEMINI

(May 22 - June 21) Your committed partnerships could have you on the run this month. There could be happy surprises and some moments that will have you wondering who put up this wall you just ran into when you weren’t looking, and that is the key to the problem. You could wind up being your own worst enemy if not careful. So pay attention. An on-the-job flirtation could enliven your holiday season on the one hand, but cause you some grief on the other. Balance is the key here. Best leave this one alone for about another month. By the last week of September you’ll be feeling very good as you complete any last minute shopping. Shared moments with your partner will take on a special glow.

CANCER (June 22 - July 23)

You may feel some pressure from the workplace this month. Chances there are placing new responsibilities on your shoulders. You’re not without the help of the Universe in these endeavors, so forge ahead with faith and confidence. You may be making changes and adding a whole new system to your work environment. Romance is just running after you with a vengeance. If single this could be the best time you may have had in some time. Discretion is important. What a wonderful way to enjoy the holiday season.

LEO

(July 24 - Aug. 23) Good heavens there are a lot of romantic opportunities for you, both this month and next. These times don’t come along all that often. You’ll need to use you head and choose wisely. There could be a romantic deception coming you’re way that could sour what appears to be the perfect match around the 13th to 15th, so be on guard. You’ll be doing most of your entertaining at home this month, the perfect opportunity to show-off the digs.As the Sun moves into Capricorn just before Christmas, there could be demands from your employer in one of those last minute seasonal crunch situations. Not to worry, you’ll shine and possibly save the day for not only yourself, but also those around you, making you the Hero of the day. And once again, I caution you about over indulging your desires and appetites.

VIRGO

(August 24 - September 23) You’ll be facing the holidays with the attitude to make this the best one ever. You may have a tendency to over spend or over decorate the homestead for the season. As if that is possible this time of year. You’ll also be gaining massive support while on the job this month. Matters and plans at hand will surprise you. The tried-and-true meets the innovation of the future to please you and your higher-ups. This plays well for you, giving you the credit you deserve for being so forward thinking. You could also receive over the entire month words and letters from those that warm, and at times overwhelm you with affection. Take the time to reciprocate. 124 AVANT GARDE LIFE

Sep 2012

LIBRA

(September 24 - October 23) This could be a record-breaking effort in the holiday card department for you this month. You could wind-up making the postal service very happy with the out- going and incoming amount of mail. The phone will be ringing off the hook. And don’t forget to check that email on a twice a day basis. There are going to be surprises there as well. There is also an interesting aspect for you this month. Someone you care about may be giving you signals that your relationship is coming to a close. Be mindful, but not spiteful about it. By the holidays, life should be back to a happy rhythm and go smoothly without incident. Bring those close to you even closer. Spend as much time together as possible..

SCORPIO

(October 24 - November 22) Financial concerns dominate this month. Holiday preparations will have to take a backseat to the plans you have in play during this period. There are so many depending on you for your expertise and their happiness is directly tied to the job you do. It will turn out to be the best holiday season you have experienced in sometime, not by what you receive, but by what you give. These actions will go a long way to further your image and you have ample opportunity to break free from a former image that has plagued you unjustly for some time. With Venus and Mars parked the entire month in you First House of Self, you may find that people are drawn to you like a magnet. There will be opportunities to expand your friendship base and make new ones. There is also the possibility of meeting the dream person of your life.

SAGITTARIUS

(November 23 - December 21)

With the Sun, Pluto and Mercury in your First House of Self, you start this month feeling dynamic and purposeful. Use this to your advantage on the 10th or 11th. Enlightening insights may come from your partner or Committed Other sometime this month. Be ready with an open ear and mind. The holiday season will feel well planned and easy going for you this year. If you’re single, romance could catch up with you around a New Year’s party just when you least expect it..

CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 20)

September is your downtime period of the year. You probably won’t feel much like shopping or going out of your way for anything until about three days before the 25th. This is OK, as by that time the batteries will be recharged and you’ll be on a roll for the holidays. Also try to avoid overworking yourself this month, which could further lower your vitality and leave you open to a cold or flu. Your friends are at your side this month and may introduce you to someone you could lose your heart to. And wouldn’t that be just the worst way to spend the holidays?'

AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 19)

With the coming holidays, you’re in a party mood. Planning, doing, going. Whatever the occasion, you rush to it. Friends champion you into escapades, but just don’t let the fun surprise you in the pocketbook area. If you have a partner or Committed Other, you will probably have a wonderful month together, especially through the holidays. You could find a new creative outlet in your career this month. Something you have had on the back burner could get the heat turned up high before the New Year and this will be to your advantage.

PISCES

(February 20 - March 20) Your career is getting big kudos from the boss and those around you this month. You may be just a bit surprised on the inside by the attention, though you would never show it outwardly. Point-of-pride. At any rate, there is also a chance for a financial windfall from your labors. If traveling this month, you could meet a new love interest. If not traveling, they may be from a distant land. Exotic and romantic. And as you are such a marshmallow romantically, you could tumble like a felled tree.

F ashion Poli ce Why does this remind us of a centaur at a glance? Guess it’s all thanks to your monotone black avatar. The tube top would have been more flattering if the straps from the inside aren’t showing! The pretty black boots are wasted and are lost in the sea of black. It is not over-done black, but wrongly-done black we are talking about here.

Okay, since when is it okay to team up elaborate diamond necklaces with one-pieces? And don’t get us started on the earrings darling. A good dress gone down the drain, thanks to the jewelry. Period.

Yes, honey we see a little boho-floral theme going on here. But you got it all wrong! The boots are a complete mismatch to your attire and the bag is the only saving grace.

We understand that you are in a “red” mood of sorts, but that doesn’t tell us why the netted black leggings chose to peep out and ruin it all? The footwear spoils the look too and we have this heartfelt desire to introduce you stores that sell good frocks. Camouflage overdose alert!! What ticks us off is the top and bottom that seem to be competing on “Who gets more layers?” The bag DEFINITELY doesn’t help at all and the cherry on top are the flowery flip flops.
