FROM THE EDITOR I have to start out with some honesty. I am not a writer. I have been putting off starting this note as long as possible in utter intimidation of following behind our beloved former editor, Briana Lindstrom. She has meant so much to this magazine and its readers, and I wish her the best of luck in the upcoming adventures life has in store for her. I am not a writer, but I love this magazine, the people involved in it, and the community that comprises it. I am nothing short of honored to be in this position and have the opportunity to share this experience with all of you. Growing up, Chico was the last place I ever thought I would call home. As a Redding native, it was all-too-common to see kids pack up and head off to Chico State, frequently returning home to the comfort of their former lives on the weekends. I was convinced that this was not the path for me. Certainly I would have a much more meaningful college experience the farther I traveled for school. Boy am I glad I was wrong. Thank goodness for my last-minute cold feet about living too far from home, thank goodness for that silly ex-boyfriend who convinced me to stay close, and thank goodness for Chico. Four years later, those cold feet and that silly boy are long gone, but my love for this place remains. I was fortunate enough to intern to for Upgraded Living during my time at Chico State, doing photography and discovering a passion for the print world. After spending a semester abroad in Italy and a year in the Tahoe area after graduation, there was no doubt that Chico was where I wanted to live and Upgraded Living was where I wanted to work. It was a huge relief to come back, especially to my magazine family. I feel so lucky to be involved in this publication and have the opportunity to interact with the community in such a creative and interesting way. I am constantly in awe of the multifaceted talent that lives here, and the pride that locals show for their hometown. This month’s sustainability feature is a perfect example of that. No other place I’ve lived or visited has displayed such a cohesive effort among residents to preserve the place they love. Being a part of this magazine has truly opened my eyes to the bounty our area has to offer and given me an unwavering pride as a self-proclaimed local. I hope it does the same for all of you. Chico has brought me nothing but good things. If I hadn’t begrudgingly taken a chance on this quirky little town, I would be missing so many of the things that make my life great. Chico gave me my future husband, lifelong friends, an amazing job, and the unErin Wenham mistakable joy of belonging to a community. Editor-In-Chief In honor of this month’s champagne-inspired feature, I propose a toast. Here’s to new adventures in cherished places, and hoping I don’t mess things up too badly!

TROY JOLLIMORE “There is the silent sea like a huge unblinking azure eye seeing itself from within/ and there are the dark shapes that move through the scene as if pulled by strings/ Slow, everything happens slowly here as if it’s hardly happening at all.” — Troy JolliVmore, from the poem “The Divers”

the town’s borders and fades into the Atlantic Ocean. Troy Jollimore was born in Liverpool in 1971, and though time seems to move at a different pace that far north, the scenery of his childhood can still be found moving through his poetry. Now a Chico State Philosophy Professor, Jollimore has published several works that examine the things—love, relationships, and loyalty—that make us most human. The two of us sat down in front of Empire Coffee one recent afternoon. Jollimore spoke in a modest tone about his life achievements— from being awarded literary honors for his writing to earning his doctorate from Princeton University. He has had quite a ride. After graduating high school in Liverpool, Jollimore moved two hours north to Halifax, where he enrolled at University of King’s College, a small liberal arts school. He began undergraduate work as an English Major, and though he loved literature, he didn’t much care for the way it was discussed and analyzed in the courses he was taking. His girl friend told
him
how much she liked her classes in philosophy, and he began attending some of those classes. In those classes, he heard intense discussions of subjects that struck a chord. “It was much more what I’d imagined college to be like and what I wanted it to be. It was fantastic,” Jollimore said. Walk MS March is National Multiple Sclerosis Month. Every year, Walk MS events take place in 13 different cities across Northern California. Chico is one of those cities. Walk MS North State will take place in Bidwell Park on Sunday, April 26. The walk is an opportunity for the local MS community to come together. Participants don’t even have to be able to walk in order to join in the event. They can roll, scoot or skip their way to the finish line. Raising money to fund research for a cure and better medications is the main goal of the walk, but it also supports the MS Society, funding services, programs and financial aid for those living with this disease. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease that attacks the myelin coating in the brain and spinal cord, ravaging the central nervous system and ultimately paralyzing movement. The majority of sufferers experience intermittent attacks (Relapsing/Remitting) that come and go. Disease modifying therapy can stop or slow the progression of the disease. Without therapy, MS can progress to what is called Secondary Progressive MS. Only about 15 percent of people with multiple sclerosis
are diagnosed with Primary Progressive, which means their symptoms slowly get worse over time. There is no treatment for Progressive MS. The National MS Society’s mission is “to stop MS in its tracks, restore what its victims have lost, and end the disease forever.” Amy Clark is one young woman whose life was changed by this debilitating disease. People like her are why so many people turn out for events like Walk MS during National Multiple Sclerosis Month. Amy was diagnosed with MS when she was just 23 years old. With symptoms that included loss of bladder control, numbness, and tingling in her feet slowly creeping up her leg, she knew something was very wrong. Doctors initially thought it was just a pinched nerve, but an MRI and a spinal tap revealed that Amy’s ailment was much more complicated. Since her diagnosis, Amy’s life has been a roller-coaster ride. She’s had bad days, particularly in the first four years after being diagnosed, days in which she could barely get out of bed. Some days she used the walls around her house to CONNECT

move from room to room, and there were months when she could not drive or go to the grocery store. For the first four years after her diagnosis, she felt completely dominated by her illness. But she’s also had good days in which her symptoms were not as bad. In 2006 she finally found the right medication for her Relapsing/Remitting MS. A drug called Tysabri proved to be life changing for Amy. She has now become a support group leader with the Northern California Chapter of the National MS Society, working with other victims of MS in Chico.“I do this work,” Amy says, “because I’ve found a way to live my best life with MS and I want to help people find a way to live their best life, too.” With MS researchers working around the globe, there’s reason to hope that one day a cure for all forms of MS will be discovered. Please support those who suffer with Multiple Sclerosis and who fight this incredibly difficult condition every day. Participate in Walk MS North State on April 26th in Bidwell Park.

Oroville 48 Hour Film Festival
H
ere at Upgraded Living, we’re always excited to hear about new and different events coming to our area. Especially those that promote the arts and creativity
within our community. We were pleased to hear that the Oroville Downtown Business Association and the City of Oroville would be sponsoring their very own film festival, and a very unique one at that. On February 26th, eager filmmaking teams met at Bird Street Café in Oroville to receive their instructions. Then the clock started ticking. Each team had just 48 hours to make their 3-8 minute movie. Perhaps even more daunting than the short timeline was not knowing the genre
were all of the classics, such as sci-fi, western, comedy, and drama. This short film festival concept was mirrored after the Ruby Peak Film Festival in Joseph, Oregon. Machelle Conn, an advocate for local arts in Oroville, had participated in this festival with her family in October of 2014 (and won!). Her positive experience with Ruby Peak inspired her to bring this concept to the city of Oroville, offering local artists another avenue to display their creativity. As a member of the Oroville Arts Commission, Conn has been involved in bringing art related events and exhibits to the area for many years. She felt that a film festival would be a great way to engage members of the community and introduce an exciting new art form to the city. Conn hopes to see a variety of

groups involved, such as schools, families, and younger generations. A public viewing event will take place on Friday, March 6th at 7:30 PM at the State Theatre in Oroville. Winners will be selected by a diverse group of judges, and prizes will be presented during the premier. Entry to the event is a simple $3.00 donation at the door-- children under 12 are free. Anyone is encouraged to attend. The audience will vote for its favorite film for a special “People’s Choice Award.” Not only does the festival create an outlet for local filmmakers, it aims to benefit the community as well. All proceeds from the viewing will be put toward the City of Oroville museums and their docents. These dedicated volunteers are responsible for maintaining the unique quality of Oroville’s museums and ensuring that all visitors have a memorable experience. What’s not to love? An evening of unique, local entertainment that will help preserve Oroville’s history. Visit www.cityoforoville.org for more information.

LOW INTEREST RATES PRESENT OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES Whether we think about it or not, interest rates have a profound impact on our society and our personal economy. Generationally low rates have changed the lifestyle of millions of people, for better or worse. Borrowers are financing purchases as cheap as ever, while older savers and retirees are having a hard time generating income with historically low savings, CD’s and fixed annuity rates. With these things in mind, we hope to offer our opinion on very commonly asked questions: How long can interest rates stay low? Slow global growth has led to rate cuts around the world, with most major economies having interest rates in the low single digits. The European Central Bank recently defied logic and set their deposit rate at -0.1% to spur lending and economic activity. In the interest rate universe, the 10-year Treasury at 1-2% isn’t a bad alternative to what else is available. Rates could remain
very low worldwide until global growth picks up.
average of 5.5% annually over the past 90 years).
Should I refinance my home now or wait? Rather than try and bet the interest rate market, decide if refinancing right now makes sense. You can refinance more than once if rates continue to fall.
What investments do poorly when rates go up? Long-term bonds tend to drop the most when newer bonds are issued at higher interest rates. Real Estate and Utility companies have done very well as investors looked for “low risk income” as rates dropped, and may have a more volatile ride if interest rates go back up.
Where should I invest for income? In fixed income, Municipal Bonds make sense for a lot of our clients. Interest rates on California Municipal Bonds are now around 4%, which is twice that of the 10 year Treasury, and 100% state and federal tax free. Stocks present an interesting opportunity, as the dividend yield on many major companies and stock indexes actually exceeds those of bonds. Of course there will be much more price volatility and market risk, but there is also potential for price appreciation and dividend growth (dividend payments on the S&P 500 have grown an

Are you having second thoughts about exercising? The way you think about exercise can be the crucial factor in sticking with your fitness program. If you look at it as a disagreeable chore, it becomes one. But if you develop an image as an active, dynamic person, you’ll be more likely to stick to your fitness program. Some exercise advice:
Signature Spa Facial $60 featuring . . . . . .
Natural Botanical Line Vegan Paraben Free No Artificial Fragrances Mention ad Receive 15% Off Pevonia & Image Products Promo thru March 31
• Find an exercise partner. If you work out on your own, you may end up being less active. If your spouse or a friend goes with you, you’ll have a commitment to honor. You won’t want to let the other person down by not exercising. • Break it up and set attainable goals. Cruise through a short jog, for instance, instead of struggling to run three miles. Too often, people starting a fitness program set unrealistic goals. They set themselves up for failure because they have expectations that are too large. • Reward yourself. Complete a half-hour walk five days in a row? That could mean a trip to the mall to buy some new clothes. Make something that otherwise could be boring fun instead.
1031 Village Lane - Chico 530.894.7722 For our full menu visit: www.sweetwaterchico.com
• Before your workout, visualize what you’ll be doing. Try to imagine what you’d look like doing an exercise. It lets you see in your mind’s eye that exercise is beneficial. • Realize that only you can control your well-being and your destiny. The best way to change your attitude about exercise is to just do it. Do something a little more each time and recognize that you accomplished something, something to feel pleased about. You build on your accomplishments. You’ll feel pleased with every little step. On March 21, Enloe Medical Center will host the Heart & Sole Run for Wellness. Gather your family and friends for a fun way to take charge of your health AND give back to your community. Enloe’s Heart & Sole event starts with a Run for Wellness, featuring a one-mile walk or a 5k+ fun run. Both courses will have some fun surprises along the way and special treats at the finish line for participants, PLUS your registration fee will help support the Enloe Heart Program. The Run for Wellness is NOT a timed run, it is a FUN run for ALL ages and ability levels. After the run, the community is invited to participate in the Wellness Expo which will feature free health screenings and wellness-inspiring activities for the whole family.

Beauty Q+A
THE HEAT, THE COLD, & THE REAL MCCOY I use heat to style my hair every day. What steps can I take to protect my hair from damage? We would always recommend using at least one product that provides thermal protection every time you heat style. For fine hair, use products like Redken’s Pillow Proof Express Primer before you blow dry, or try Paul Mitchell’s Hot Off the Press, before using a flat or curling iron, for a little hold and to protect your locks. If you have thick hair, we recommend using Aquage Silkening Oil Treatment for blow drying protection and to quell the frizz. We also love Sexy Hairs’ 450 for straightening thicker hair for maximum protection and brilliant shine. My scalp is so dry and itchy during these cold winter months, what can I do? There are several common causes of an itchy scalp. Dry air during cold winter months combined with frequent blow drying and chemical treatments can deplete moisture from your scalp
and leave you itchy. We recommend using either Lanza Remedy shampoo or Joico balancing shampoo to help soothe the scalp. Both will balance out the scalp and get rid of any itching or flaking. I often see discounted “salon” beauty brands at drugstores. How can I be sure that I’m actually getting salon quality products? You can be sure you are getting salon quality products by purchasing them from a salon! That is the only way that your product is guaranteed to be the name brand listed on the container. Some product bottles that resemble high-end salon product bottles show up in drugstores, but there is no guarantee that the product is ‘The Real McCoy.’ This is partially due to the fact that most salon product companies do not package their own products. So take the opportunity to support your stylist and local business and get the real deal!

Don’t Miss the Signs of Hearing Loss By Deanna McCoy It’s so frustrating! Why don’t people just slow down and talk more clearly? Why does everyone mumble? If you ever feel this way during conversations, you’re not alone. The truth is, not understanding speech is a common sign of hearing loss – one of the world’s most common health problems. Because hearing loss is usually a gradual process, it often goes unnoticed or ignored. You may attribute your difficulty in hearing to other factors. Or, maybe you don’t even notice your hearing loss, but others around you do. If you’re not sure, the following questions can help determine if you have a hearing problem: • Do you often ask others to repeat themselves? • Do you turn up the TV or radio louder than others prefer? • Is it particularly difficult to understand conversation when there is background noise? • Does it seem as though others are

But don’t worry, there is help. GREEN GARDEN DIY
Take the pallet trend into your garden! This planter project is a beautiful and inexpensive way to repurpose an unused item into an eye-catching and colorful display for your yard. WHAT YOU’LL NEED: One pallet Many garden supply shops or stores that carry large equipment have extras that they will give away. 2-3 large bags of potting soil Depends on the size of your pallet. Approximately 15 six-packs of starter plants We chose a variety of grasses, creeping thyme, ornamental kale, primrose, and pansies from the beautiful selection at Magnolia Gift & Garden.
ible Avoid any ed llets pa e m so as , plants ardous az n contain h Small roll of landscaping fabric ca s. al ic chem Staple gun
PAINT You may choose to paint or stain your pallet, or leave the wood unfinished. We chose to perk up our pallet with a flat exterior paint from Sherwin Williams, which provides resistance to moisture and other elements. We went with “Tantalizing Teal” for a cheery pop of color. Make sure your paint is completely dry before planting your pallet.
COVER THE BACK You’ll need to cover the bottom, back, and sides of your pallet with landscaping fabric to make sure no soil escapes. You may decide to double to fabric if it appears thin. Make sure the fabric is pulled taut and staple about every two inches anywhere on the pallet where dirt could fall through. You cannot over staple!
FILL + PLANT Bring your pallet as close to its final resting place as possible--it will be very heavy once filled. Lay your pallet flat on the ground and begin shoveling in your soil. You want your pallet to be full but not overflowing with soil. Place several plants in each slot, making sure that the soil is tightly packed. Now you’re ready to display your planter! Lean it up against a fence or even hang it on an exterior wall.
Special thanks to our friends at Magnolia Gift and Garden and Sherwin Williams of Chico for their collaboration on this project! 35

New Again Kitchen & Bath Presents
House Call
March 2015: Friends and Family Gather Here
The Couple
The Call
BY JAIME O’NEILL PHOTOS BY ERIN WENHAM
Stuart and Terrie Bannister are the kind of home remodel and redesign customers who might intimidate some home interior designers. They own Bann Co., a real estate investment company, so they know more about home construction, prices, and remodeling challenges than most customers who come into the New Again Kitchen and Bath showroom on Park Avenue. When the Bannisters bought their home in Paradise, they initially planned to fix it up for quick resale. “We originally planned to flip this house,” Stuart says, “ but we both just fell in love with it.” It’s easy to see why. The house is open, airy, and spacious. It sits on a large lot in a nice area of Paradise. Stuart and Terrie have six children, and three dogs, and though the house was showing signs of age, it was clear that it could be readily upgraded. They decided to do a major transformation, so they dropped in at the New Again Kitchen and Bath showroom and met Ric Powers, the designer. They knew almost immediately that they were in good hands. “Ric has an instinct,” Terrie says, “and he knew exactly what to show me.”
The Call “Stuart and Terrie were a pleasure to work with,” Ric says.

“They knew what they wanted. They knew they were going to paint the existing customer-built cabinets, and they also knew they wanted granite in the kitchen and master bath.” New Again Kitchen and Bath specializes in granite work, so Ric was sure he could give the couple what they sought. And though some might have found it intimidating to work with people who know so much about houses, Ric was undaunted. “We love working with people in real estate. In my Pasadena company, I was the trade designer, working with people in the trade, from designers, to realtors, contractors and architects. In many ways the professionals are always looking for the same thing private homeowners are looking for: good quality material and installations at an affordable price. At New Again Kitchen and Bath, this is what we try to achieve for each of our clients. QUALITY and VALUE. At the end of the day, we just want happy, satisfied customers, and if that results in making a few new friends along the way, so much the better.”
AFTER Milky Way granite Painted cabinets New stainless steel appliances New cabinet hardware New plumbing fixtures
The Cure The kitchen was upgraded with Milky Way granite counters and a six-inch backsplash. A small piece of “leftover” granite was cut and polished to create an 11-inch deep window box. An 18-gauge stainless steel sink brought the kitchen changes together. “In the bathroom,” Ric says, “we installed GLACIER WHITE granite and backsplash and also supplied them with a white undermount bathroom sink.”

Champagne has the best flavor when served chilled and in tall flute glasses, which helps to preserve its carbonation. The acidity of dry Champagne makes it a great match for rich or creamy foods. Sweeter varieties should be preserved for dessert or simply drinking for fun. VS. Sparkling Wine Sparkling Wine is essentially the same as Champagne, but cannot be called Champagne unless it comes from the Champagne region of France. Different types of sparkling wines are made all over the world, each with unique qualities and flavor profiles. In general, a great sparkling wine will be bright, acidic, and slightly fruity in flavor, although not too sweet. High quality sparkling wines will have smaller bubbles. Sparkling wine is a great choice for many food pairings, such as fish, cheeses, dried fruits, or savory dishes. VS. Prosecco Prosecco is the Italian version of sparkling wine, hailing from the Veneto region of northeast Italy. It is generally a dry sparkling wine with a different fermentation process from champagne, which is actually more cost effective and makes the end product more affordable. Prosecco usually has a light and delicate flavor profile, with notes of citrus, green apple, and white flowers. Prosecco is often used in traditional Bellinis, which combines sparkling wine with peach puree. As for meal pairings, Prosecco’s light yet acidic flavor marries well with prosciutto dishes, mushrooms, creamy sauces, and fried foods. VS.
BACON AVOCADO OMELETTE Cheese, bacon, and fresh avocado served with cottage potatoes topped with sour cream and green onions.
Moscato Moscato is a lightly sparkling and often sweet wine, born in Italy’s northern Piedmont region. It is surprisingly sweet and fruity both in flavor and fragrance. Its delicate fizz doesn’t overpower the impressive bouquet of flavors present, such as peach, apricot, apple, orange, and honeysuckle. Moscato makes an excellent Summer dessert wine, especially when served chilled. Try it with a refreshing fruit sorbet or pair with your favorite medium cheese for a Summer evening treat. 51

inger/songwriter Eliza Gilkyson gave a concert here in Chico last month, playing before a capacity audience at the Chico Women’s Club. She was accompanied at that stellar event by Nina Gerber, a woman whose skills on guitar and mandolin have grown ever more legendary since her days lending magic to well-remembered performances by the late great Kate Wolf. It was a big week for Ms. Gilkyson. Her 2014 album, The Nocturne Diaries, had been nominated for a Grammy, her second Grammy nod, and though she didn’t win, the recognition was appreciated, and well earned. She’s recorded more than 20 albums, written a passel of songs, recorded or performed with some of the biggest names in the folk and Americana genres, and garnered a legion of fans. She does about 150 live shows a year, and whenever she turns up to play here in Butte County, the local devotees always show up. In advance of her Chico show, she was gracious enough to share some of her insights into music and songwriting in an exclusive interview with Upgraded Living.

ELIZA GILKYSON
What makes a great song? And is there a difference between a great song and a merely good song? For me, a great song has t o be lyrical, musical, rhythmic, well crafted and also have something that makes it unique, whether that’s a clever and satisfying hook line, chorus or idea, PLUS an emotional component that can’t be measured, just felt. To me there are only great songs and not-so-great songs. Good doesn’t count! When asked to name a poet he admired, Bob Dylan once named Smokey Robinson. Do you find any useful distinction to be made between poets and songwriters? Not every great song can be spoken as poetry and stand up without the music. The musical component does change the value of the words, and much can be conveyed via melody and chord changes. In some ways, songwriting is easier, with more tricks to employ. So the distinction between poets and songwriters may just be in the delivery method. When a song or a poem works, the outcome, the emotional impact on the listener, is probably indistinguishable. Do you remember a song you’ve written that you still can’t explain, that seemed to have materialized from nowhere? Sure, I can look back and wonder how I found the way into many of my songs in hindsight. How did I get there? It reminds BY JAIME O’NEILL PHOTO BY SCOTT NEWTON
me of Felix the Cat walking around throwing up those black holes he could jump into and go on some strange journey somewhere else. When he returns and the hole closes behind him he’s standing on a street corner scratching his head. Some of my more “spiritual” songs were leaps into black holes. Do you sometimes, often, or never look back at a song and wish you’d used different words, images, melody? Do you ever revisit an old song and do it differently when you’re on tour, or do you stick faithfully to what your audience expects from the way it was originally recorded? Oh yes. For me, everything is open to ongoing improvement and refinement, especially when I carry the songs forward in my shows. Your dad was a terrific songwriter, both commercially and as his own voice. What lessons did you get directly from him? What I got from him was more by osmosis than from direct teaching. He was melodic and able to put his finger on the pulse of the feeling behind the lyrics, and he wrote dynamite bridges. He loved dark melodies and wasn’t at all afraid of the shadow side of songwriting and being creative. I can hear his melodic inclinations and influences in many
of my songs. His was the first music I listened to as a kid, so the influence is almost primal. Do you think there is a gender difference in the way men and women might approach the writing of a song? Women may tell a story from a more personal point of view, and men might be more inclined to tell a story in the third person. But there are an awful lot of exceptions to that sweeping statement. You’ve given your life to music, and you paid your dues. Was it a good choice? I am very grateful that I have been able to carve a living and life for myself in music without ever becoming a household name. My career has spanned over 45 years. I have certainly questioned my path from time to time, especially when I was raising the kids as a single mom while trying to build a career and not doing a very good job of either. Being a musician does require a certain amount of self absorption and that can be very unsafe for children. But really, there was nothing else I was any good at, and I was always one of those people who felt like they were dying doing a straight job. Very spoiled! My children appear to have forgiven me, thankfully, because I really do love making music for a living, I mean, I
REALLY LOVE it! That doesn’t mean you don’t take a lot of his. It’s hard to handle rejection over something that’s so personal. You have to grow some thick skin to stay in this line of work, because there will be rejection and some very humbling moments. Plus you have to be able to adapt to financial instability. But I have no doubt that for me this was the right choice. I could have done some things differently, but another profession was never in the cards. What is music for, as you see it? At best, I see it as a vehicle for serving the greater good and maintaining human decency in very challenging and grievous times. At worst, it’s just another form for communicating basic human emotions and replaying age-old archetypical stories. If you could have asked Woody Guthrie or Hank Williams for songwriting tips, how would you have framed that question? I don’t think either of those guys ever thought about how they did it. They were both moving through life in a state of total immersion, reacting viscerally to the world around them without questioning why or how. If you would have asked them such a question, they’d probably look at you like you were crazy.”

Not being a fan of the typical, square looking coasters I wanted something different. And getting young people like myself to even use a coaster is challenge all on its own, which led me to these. Being a little nuts myself, these coasters fit my personality very well. “Being ‘green’ for me is simply taking my lifestyle and seeing where I can make simple changes to my daily routine to reuse, repurpose, and reduce waste to better the environment and ultimately myself. In my life, the main way I’m environmentally friendly is by using my bike as my main form of transportation. I have always loved going mountain biking, so traveling on a bike is not only something that I thoroughly enjoy, but is great daily exercise and is helping the environment one pedal at a time.”
