FROM THE EDITOR I grew up as a playful, silly kid with a loving family including an Auntie Millie who looked like Snow White and called me “Precious.” Somewhere in the midst of all this happiness, I developed an unsolicited obsession with the color black which lasted through my elementary school years. After resisting gender stereotypes and insisting on being a tough soccer-playing tomboy who hated girly things, I turned 13 and finally figured out what most girls instinctively adopt in preschool as a part of their identity: pink was my favorite color. With a side of sparkles. Now, as an adult, pink is the team color for one of my favorite causes. My beautiful Auntie Millie battled and lost her fight against breast cancer in the ‘80s, but over the years research has continued and survivorship is now higher than ever before. There is a team of incredibly strong warriors--both women and men who sport pink as their uniform and fight for their lives, their children’s futures, awareness, early detection and a cure. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Upgraded Living is joining Team Pink to raise awareness by sharing stories, information, and a safe place for those fighting to take refuge and find support. We are not wallowing in the very real sadness and stress of breast cancer, but are celebrating those who have fought, and encouraging everyone to get educated. Several survivors have been brave enough to bare their souls and share their stories with us, and they are doing so to shine light on the subject. Early detection saves lives. Learn from their experiences and give your own breasts some TLC--Touch, Look, Check. We know all of our readers aren’t women, and that’s ok, we’re still talking to you guys too. One in eight women will have invasive breast cancer in her lifetime; men have a one in one thousand chance. If you’re lucky enough to escape being “the one,” the chances are you’ll still have to help someone you love fight the fight. Let’s take what we know and pass it on to get closer to finding a cure. Pink is the uniform, the mascot, the call to action, the fight. Hope is the side of sparkles. Thanks for reading, dear readers. Have a beautiful first month of fall and a happy and safe Halloween!

Local Legend:
RICHARD FREY
Every person has a story. Many have a passion. Richard Frey is a man whose story and passion have combined, creating incredible history. 9
Walking into the Richard Frey Art Gallery, hidden behind the façade of a regular home on a busy street, you are transported into a different time—a time where quality craftsmanship was exalted and things were created by hand. Covering the hallways, leaning against cream colored walls, and displayed on large easels are pieces of artwork ranging in age and genre. Frey’s life work has been in collecting, appraising, and sometimes creating works of art. Growing up, he was influenced by the artist next door, John Warren Doty who “would always let me watch and never ran me off.” Frey’s curiosity was sparked. When his sister began working with watercolors, and his mother with other mediums taught by the neighbor, Frey was inspired. Only a few years later, a stamp shop was opened on 3rd Street in Downtown Chico by a young fellow at the age of 15. You could only guess that this entrepreneurial young collector was Richard. Collecting was in his veins and he had thousands of stamps to show for it. The Stamp Corner was only open about a year but Frey’s love for the hunt continued long into the future. Now, at 85, Richard has over 600 pieces of art available. His vast and varying knowledge on the subject naturally guided him into the appraisal business, along with opening an art gallery in his home: the man literally lives and breathes exquisite art all day long. His collection is really aimed at “the advanced collector,” one who understands and appreciates the delicacy of the art. Squinting your eyes to try to focus on each tiny mark Rembrandt created, running your fingers over hand stitched oriental rugs, and staring into the eyes of portraits that aren’t so different from yourself, Richard Frey’s gallery is a time capsule and he is the captain. He is full of facts, information and love for the art that surrounds him. “This one is from…” “Look at the close and far away focus of distance in that…” “One of my favorites is…” “...created with copper plates and acid...” “The early 1600s...” Blown away by the genius who stands in front of me I can’t help but ask him how he remembers all these facts. All these artists. It’s incredible. Modestly he replies, “I’ve done my homework.”

Paradise MADE IN
Nestled among the Paradise pines is a small building, a refuge of sorts, for a small group of artists. Inside you’ll find tables with mini mountains of multicolored beads, paint brushes, and a kiln. Most important are the rows of hanging jewelry and shelves showcasing incredible works of art. Made in Paradise has been open since 2012 and is part of the Work Training Center. The program serves adults with developmental disabilities and “provides a creative outlet and small business experience for individuals to develop their artistic skills, independent living, communication and public social skills,” states their website. Talking with the people at Made in Paradise about their experience with the program is incredible. They come every day, working on their individual art pieces, tediously changing and reworking until each piece is completed to its creator’s satisfaction. Made in Paradise gives individuals a place to sell their jewelry, paintings, fused glass, ceramics and beaded creations. If you want something specific, they can design it in whatever color or form you want. Sharon Hardin, coordinator of Made in Paradise explains the process. “Seventy-five percent of what
[the participants] make goes directly to them; the other 25% goes back into materials.” That doesn’t leave much room in the budget to pay teachers, many of whom have art degrees and dedicate every day to this program. “We have amazing devoted people here. One guy has been here since the program opened. He drives up and down the hill every day on minimum wage paychecks,” Sharon says. Tears spring to both our eyes as we discuss the importance of Made in Paradise and how great it is for all the people involved. As an art therapy program, people who have had huge behavioral problems can come and find their niche. Many are so enamored by their projects that their daily free time is spent at Michaels, buying more supplies. There are rarely any behavioral issues at Made in Paradise as everyone is so devoted to their work and loves what they do. It is increasingly difficult to keep open such a small organization, but the passion for helping people is clear through the people who work at Made in Paradise. Every day, their mission of helping people with disabilities express themselves with wonderful works of art is accomplished. We urge you to take the time to drive up to this quaint cottage and spend some time perusing through the handmade gifts. The annual Christmas Open House is a great opportunity to find that unique present. Hot drinks will be served, live music played, and raffle prizes auctioned every hour as the snow (hopefully) falls. Come support Made in Paradise and these incredible local artists with the knack for original craft. BY ALYSSA WORLEY / PHOTOS BY ERIN WENHAM

nnabelle Pearl is like confetti and jelly beans and rainbow colored balloons--if confetti and jelly beans and rainbow colored balloons had souls. She is always smiling, always making other people happy, always willing to take on the adventure, the friendship, the challenge, the dance that is life. At the same time, she will stop in the moment, let her smile fade, and look inward before answering any question. She puts thought into the message she sends out into the world, and expresses herself beautifully in writing, spoken word, painting and ballet. Annabelle writes our monthly “Cool Kid” article where she features a kid in the community who does something special. This month, we want to honor her for her 15th birthday (October 30), and show our readers what a cool kid she is herself. Annabelle has been dancing since she was 2 ½ years old and carries herself with the poise and grace of a ballerina. She has been writing for a long time too, and consciously makes it a part of her everyday life. “Whether I’m writing lists, or poetry, or writing about my day, I always find something to write about,” she says. This is exactly the spirit that we love about Annabelle. We met her while we were doing an article on an
UPGRADED LIVING | OCTOBER 2014 | UPGRADEDLIVING.COM
international exchange program and interviewed her as a host sister. She has no siblings, so she connects with and treats international exchange students her family takes in as her sisters. When we found out she has a passion and talent for writing, we offered her our “Cool Kid” column and without hesitation, she became our youngest writer and one of the most enthusiastic, dependable people we’ve ever had on staff. Along with being artistic and articulate, she is strong and wise beyond her years--qualities she learned from her mother. “My mom is my role model. She has shown me that she is really strong because she was able to beat breast cancer.” Annabelle’s approach to life is captured in her favorite quote: “No one can tell your story so tell it yourself. No one can write your story so write it yourself.” She wants to be a sister, so she is. She wants to be a dancer, so she is. She wants to be a writer, so she is. It is clear that Annabelle is going to do great things in her life and we are excited to be a part of her story. Happy birthday, Annabelle! Keep on dancing, creating and smiling! Community groups, local bands, and a plethora of northern California residents gathered together on September 18th to celebrate the fast approaching commencement of the 8th annual Annie B’s Community Drive during the Thursday Night Market in Downtown Chico. The event, put on by the North Valley Community Foundation, included five bands that played through the evening while visitors danced and reveled in the opportunity to interact with some of the North Valley’s most notable do-gooders. Of the 271 organizations that took part in the Drive, 55 were in attendance with booths throughout Downtown Chico’s City Plaza, handing out fliers and imparting knowledge on interested passersby. The evening was electric; with a record turnout, perfect weather, and excellent music, participants unanimously agreed that it was the best Gratitude and Celebration Event yet. We’ve included some of our favorite sentiments below.

We provide a gateway to healing with scholarships for at risk youth, PTSD veterans, immobilized seniors, and pain clinic women and children in the north state community and beyond. We are excited and pleased to join the Annie B’s Community Drive for the first time! Our collaboration with the North Valley Community Foundation, as we launch as a new non-profit organization, guided us to tremendous focus, clarity, and renewed passion for the work and services we envision. -Awakened Yoga Global Healing Center
Annie B’s has provided Sherwood Montessori with its easiest, most successful fundraiser each year. It makes it so easy for families to give and for the educators to stay focused on educating the children. The revenues that are raised by Annie B’s have helped Sherwood through its earliest, leanest years and now we are looking towards the future when we will be able to use these funds to build our dream facility. A sincere thank you to the North Valley Community Foundation and all the generous Chico community members.

When Chico Unified closed the Forest Ranch Elementary School in 2008 we were devastated to lose our community school. Then along came Annie B’s along with a strong rally in the community. Between the two we were able to raise the funds to open the Forest Ranch Charter School. Now in our seventh year, Annie B’s has helped us open our school, establish a transportation program which transports students from Chico to our school, get started constructing additional classrooms to house our growing program, and support extras such as overnight field trips, music, and the arts. We are thrilled that the North Valley Community Foundation continues to fund and support this valuable program. Thank you Annie B’s!

arrive at the Patrick Ranch Museum for an interview and am greeted not with the calm, whispering atmosphere most museums house along with look-don’t-touch tidbits of history, but with a lively group of volunteers working the land, planning events and tending the animals.
Soon after my arrival, I’m holding a warm egg fresh from the chicken coop in one hand, an avocado seed that dropped from a huge avocado tree in the other, and cradling the Ranch’s first baby pumpkin of the season in the crook of my arm. With my hands full and my heart warmed by the giving, homey feeling of the Ranch, I explore the vintage blacksmith display in the museum and am captivated by the incredible late 19th century printing machine with drawers full of tiny moveable type that occupies a wide corner in the gift-shop. Before the Ranch’s last family member and resident
left the ranch to the Far West Heritage Association, Hester Grimm Patrick expressed her wish for Patrick Ranch to provide “the preservation and interpretation of the agricultural history of the Sacramento Valley, including social, cultural and economic aspects.” I walk back through a barn full of antique farming equipment and explore Glenwood, the grand farm house which has been restored to earlier times when it was at its peak of grandeur, social activity and influence, and I know Hester’s wish is being fulfilled daily. Patrick Ranch is cared for mainly by volunteer workers who aren’t afraid to get dirty maintaining the home, the museum, the animals, events and the

land. One volunteer especially stands out. Her tan, sinewy arms dig in the dirt with authority and flowers, bees and grasses respond to her as if they were her students. Barbara Copeland, a retired Chico High School teacher who turned 91 in September stands proud and protective over the Heritage Gardens surrounding the Glenwood house, wearing a shirt that says 90 and I Still Play in the Dirt. “The dirt here is so good,” she says, “You just put something in there, then jump back!” She and her team of volunteers have been working the Ranch for years and are further proof that Hester Patrick has left her family’s estate in good hands. There is plenty to see and do at the Patrick Ranch Museum and they have recently extended their opening hours to include Fridays and Saturdays, 11:00 AM-3:00 PM year-round. With rotating museum exhibits, seasonally changing decorations and plenty of unique, fun events for people of all ages, we encourage you to stop by and absorb a bit of the community’s history. BY BRIANA LINDSTROM / SURVIVOR PHOTOS BY ERIN WENHAM
I belong to a Clan of One-Breasted Women. My mother, my grandmothers, and six aunts have all had mastectomies. Seven are dead. The two who survive have just completed rounds of chemotherapy and radiation. I’ve had my own problems: two biopsies for breast cancer and a small tumor removed between my ribs diagnosed as “a borderline malignancy.” This is my family history… Is our family a cultural anomaly? The truth is, we didn’t think about it. Those who did, usually the men, simply said, “bad genes.” The women’s attitude was stoic. Cancer was a part of life. On February 16, 1971, the eve before my mother’s surgery, I accidentally picked up the telephone and overheard her ask my grandmother what she could expect. “Diane, it is one of the most spiritual experiences you will ever encounter.” I quietly put down the receiver. Two days later, my father took my three brothers and me to the hospital to visit her. She met us in the lobby in a wheelchair. No bandages were visible. I’ll never forget her radiance, the way she held herself in a purple velour robe and how she gathered us around her. “Children, I am fine. I want you to know I felt the arms of God around me.” We believed her. My father cried. Our mother, his wife, was 38 years old. haring fighter and survivor stories creates awareness, hope and a community where breast cancer can be addressed and life can be celebrated. The candor and heart with which these stories are told is admirable, and
the women who tell them are, as Tempest says, stoic and radiant. In our community we have many survivors, many who have been lost, and many who are still fighting. Several brave women and a loving husband have taken the time to share their stories with us so that we can pass them on to you, our readers. With help from communities like our own, research continues and prevention and a cure are getting closer. Together, we can learn from these warriors and educate one another. Share their stories with those you love, as these survivors have shared with you. If you’re fighting your own fight, don’t be afraid to reach out for support. And to all you beauties, young and old, do a self exam, schedule a mammogram, join the fight.
AGE 47 Tracy found a large lump in her breast in May of 2006 and was diagnosed with breast cancer two months later. After her initial reaction of “Oh S***!” she had to start thinking about how to tell her kids. “We had an 8 and 11 year old and I needed to figure out how to tell them. I knew I had to do everything I could to stay alive so I could be with my kids.” Through everything, Tracy and her husband Jim made a big effort to keep their kids’ lives as normal as possible. “I didn’t want them to grow up with only memories of their mom having cancer,” says Tracy, so she went through chemo and radiation and continued to participate in her children’s lives, chaperoning field trips and being an involved mother even during treatments. In June of 2008, a healthy Tracy got her chemo port taken out. Only two months later, in August she wasn’t feeling well again. Although doctors and nurses told her her body was still recovering from chemo and she shouldn’t be worried, Tracy felt like something just wasn’t right. In November 2008, after lots of tests and scans and a biopsy, she was diagnosed again. “The second time really made it real,” she recalls. “I had done everything the doctors told me to do, plus more. I did acupuncture, supplements, energy work. I wanted to
feel like I had some type of control. When it came back again it was scary.” With the feeling that her body was not under her control, she put her efforts towards staying strong for her family once again. “I went to the cancer library at Enloe and brought a few books home for my kids. I told them we’re not hiding it, it’s not something to be embarrassed about. They could say or do whatever they needed to get through it.” Her son didn’t tell a soul, and her daughter told everyone. “My daughter’s being vocal about it actually helped me at first,” says Tracy, “She would say ‘My mom is bald. She has a wig.’” After her first chemo treatment, Tracy began to lose her hair. “Going bald was hard. We had a shaving party and invited all our friends and family over. We had fun with it--everyone got to take a swipe if they wanted to. But you don’t realize that your hair is such a part of your identity.” In true Tracy fashion, she found a way to make things comfortable and manageable for her family. “We even ended up giving my wig a name, Lola. That way if it was crooked or something was wrong my kids could say ‘Mom, Lola needs help.’” While her family provided great support, Tracy also felt the need to find others to relate to who were going through cancer. “I found The Celebration fashion show because I needed something fun and positive. I met a bunch of cancer survivors there. We got together and swapped stories. You can say anything and they completely get it.” Tracy’s story is one of strength and hope, as well as a testament to the need to continue research. After lots of tests, treatments, doctors, and two bouts with cancer, Tracy is finding out more about her body’s unique makeup. She is missing an enzyme in her liver that helps metabolize medications and that contributed to her getting cancer the second time. “Every day they are learning more in cancer research. They’re finding different genes, different enzymes, different things that can trigger cancer. It’s really good to support cancer research and they are finally starting to realize that survivorship is where they need to put a lot of their resources in order to learn more.” Jim accompanied Tracy to every one of her appointments which was great for moral support, and also to have a second set of ears and eyes. “Always take someone with you to your appointments. When I had my first appointments, my mom, dad, husband and midwife came. So much information was given and each person ended up hearing a different part of the conversation.” She also reminds others fighting cancer to “Stay positive. Try to find the silver lining in everything. As hard as it was, it really brought our family together. It makes you realize there are so many things in life that aren’t important that people can stress over.”
Jim is a local firefighter and while he is able to exhibit bravery each day at work, being there to support his wife and family through cancer was a new kind of challenge. “The hardest thing for me was that I can’t fix it,” he says. Like his wife, he reached out to others going through similar situations to help him through. “Reach out to other people who can relate,” he says, “When Tracy was diagnosed, I called another firefighter friend whose wife had cancer. I called him up and said ‘Ok what do I need to know?’ It is important to be there for those who may go through what you’ve been through. Pay it forward.”

AGE 57 Cheree, a nurse at Enloe, had a strong history of breast cancer on both sides of her family, so her OBGYN recommended she get early mammography. In the spring of 1993, at the age of 36, she was diagnosed on a baseline mammogram. She had a baby who was about to turn a year old and after losing many family members at a young age, her fear of not being there for her family was very real. “Right after I was diagnosed, one of my family members suggested that I go see Sleepless in Seattle. I remember the opening scene of the movie shows Tom Hanks at the grave of his wife with his son. I just started bawling. I had a young family and I couldn’t imagine not being here with them.” So she did what she could to fight her battle. She went through a mastectomy and chemotherapy and was a bald mama with a one year old child, but she took it all in stride. “It was the first time I was bald,” she smiles, “So I went as a Hare Krishna for Halloween.” Cheree survived, moved on with her life, and had another child who she nursed with her single breast. With her life going at full speed, she fell behind in her mammograms and eventually started to feel like something just wasn’t right. “I felt a change. Not a lump, but almost like a void--a softening of tissue. I thought ‘Is my breast dissolving? Is this just what happens with age?’ But I wasn’t sure,
so I went in for a mammogram.” She was shocked to find out that it had been five years since her last mammogram. It was 2011 and Cheree was diagnosed with a different kind of cancer this time, but faced it with the same amount of strength and bravery. “I got to be bald again. This time I put henna on my head. It was wild looking--very tribal.” As a survivor making fashion statements, it’s no wonder she got involved with The Celebration fashion show--an inspirational runway fashion show and fundraiser featuring models who are breast cancer survivors. With the help of the local cancer community, her family and friends and “A HUGE nod to Enloe Home Care,” she was able to get back to being her healthy, strong self again. “I’m an extremely healthy person, I’ve just had cancer twice. It doesn’t define me. Neither do the wild ‘70s!” Cheree radiates positivity and fortitude, which made the looking sick part of going through cancer the hardest part for her. “The looks you see on other people’s faces when they see you, like ‘Oh you poor thing.’ I’m just not used to being a sick person so I hated looking ill.” After surviving cancer twice, Cheree wants to remind everyone: “Get your mammograms regularly and learn how to do a proper self check.” For those who are diagnosed with cancer, she advises not to lose yourself in the disease, “Don’t let it define you. Try not to wear it like a victim badge. Trust the process and do what you’re told.” Spoken like a true nurse, mother and warrior.
The journey to a world with less breast cancer and more birthdays starts with a single step. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is a powerful and inspiring annual event that unites communities to celebrate people who have battled breast cancer, raise awareness about preventing the disease, and raise money to find a cure. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer events are a celebration of survivorship, an occasion to express hope and shared determination to make this breast cancer’s last century.

AGE 24 Sam felt a lump in her breast when she was 22, but the doctors didn’t think it was cancer because she was so young and the lump was painful--cancer isn’t supposed to be painful. After fighting for an answer, she went to the VA and was able to get an ultrasound. She was attending school in Hawaii at the time and got a call on a Friday afternoon while she was in class. It was cancer. She flew home three days later to Chico to be near her family and friends for support. She was only 23 years old. With a double mastectomy, chemotherapy, radiation and herceptin treatments, Sam is a true, blue girl when she says, “The hardest part was losing all my hair. I hated walking around with scarves on and having people stare at me and make comments.” It takes a tough woman to complain only about fashion while overcoming the struggle your body goes through when receiving treatment for cancer. “I became so weak. I had no muscle and

Cari found her lump after she finished nursing her daugher. She knew something didn’t feel right and went to the doctor. After lots of tests and scans, she was diagnosed in June of 2013. When Cari found out she had breast cancer, her biggest fear was the possibility of her daughter growing up without her mother. “I’ve never been afraid to die myself,” she explains, “But to think she would have to go through the loss of her mother...how hard it would be for her to understand...it would be traumatizing.” So Cari faced her cancer head-on and was determined to keep on living and being a mother. “I was really strong before I went on chemo. I was lifting weights, running half-marathons, climbing on the jungle gym with my daughter. Now there are times I’m so weak, it’s scary,” says Cari. “Some days I can barely pick up my daughter. That’s the hardest part.” Whether or not Cari feels strong, her strength is apparent when talking to her, and her faith and amazing support system have helped her through the hardest times. “My immediate family and friends have poured love all over me. My mom and dad are right there before I even know I need them. My girlfriends always make sure I have someone to go to appointments with. Even the staff at Enloe where she worked helped get her through her treatments. “Every time I would go to have chemo, they would all dress in
I couldn’t run or work out or anything,” Sam says. Her family, friends and community have been there to keep her strong when she felt weak. “My five brothers and sisters, my parents, and my boyfriend have been my support. My boyfriend and I started dating after I got diagnosed and he’s been through everything with me. The community here has been super awesome too.” Sam is an incredibly beautiful, strong woman who had to face something most of us are scared to think about at a very young age. We are happy to be a part of the community that continues to cheer her on and are excited to report that she recently did her first triathlon. She is a great person to look to for advice and as a reminder to women to be body conscious. “Pay attention to your body,” she says, “If you feel like there’s an issue, look into it further. If you’re not getting the answer you want, find another referral, another opinion.” For anyone out there fighting breast cancer, Sam is cheering you on as well. “There are some days when you don’t want to do it anymore,” she says, “That day will end. You’ll get a whole new day the next day. Eventually things will start looking up.”
pink and take a photo in the lobby and send it to me to support me.” Along with her friends and colleagues, she has found support in the local cancer community and urges those with cancer to find others who they can truly relate to. “Find somebody else who has had cancer. I don’t always want to complain to my friends and mom and husband ‘I’m tired. I don’t feel good.’ It’s nice to find somebody who you can have coffee with or text to say ‘I’m SO over this.’ And they get it. They don’t feel obligated or uncomfortable.” In spite of sometimes being over it, Cari maintains an incredibly positive outlook. “In a lot of ways, it’s been a privilege to get cancer,” says Cari. “You don’t realize what you have sometimes.” Cari’s friends have really shown her what amazing love and loyalty she has in her life. They took turns shaving her head when she started to lose her hair and although she admits she cried in the morning before they came over, when they got there they all powered through it together. They made it fun and were there for her more than she could have imagined. Cari knows what she holds important. “Save yourself, lose the tatas!” She laughs. On a more serious note, she thinks about her friends and her cancer and says, “I’m good with it. Let me be the one in eight. If one of us has to do it, I’ll do it. I’ll take one for the team.” 23

Only 34% of 4th graders in our public schools in the United States are proficient readers (US Dept. of Ed. 2013). Smart Nutrition In a Diet-Crazy World By Nicole Johansson
In any given week, you are likely bombarded with messages about what foods are healthy for you. You’re likely getting more information than you know what to do with. “People are more interested in their diet today. But at the same time, it’s become more confusing in some ways,” explains Mary Hurd Aram, Certified Diabetes Educator and Clinical Dietitian at Enloe Medical Center. “People often get excited about nutrition but then get overwhelmed by all the conflicting information.” Aram helps guide individuals to healthy food choices to improve their lives. She says one of the biggest problems is the way people think about their diet. “The word diet has become laden with a lot of negative connotation,” says Aram. “It’s mostly used to refer to something that is overly restrictive and lots of hard work. Dieting is something you’re only able to do for short periods of time, as most diets leave you unable to participate in most customary eating situations. In general, they are just not sustainable.”
That’s why Aram urges her patients to reimagine their diet using the acronym D.I.E.T. — Developing Intelligent Eating Techniques. In order to develop these techniques Aram advises her patients to:
Focus on “diets” that concentrate on what to eat instead of what not to eat. Avoid eating plans that promise quick fixes. Steer clear of plans that eliminate an entire food group or suggest focusing on one specific food group.

UPGRADED LIVING | OCTOBER 2014 | UPGRADEDLIVING.COM
When helping her patients create new ways of eating, among other research evidence, Aram can use recommendations from the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) OmniHeart Nutrition Combination Plan. “Our culture has an abundance of higher starch and carbohydrate foods. When you eat more vegetables, you ultimately end up eating less of other foods because vegetables allow you to eat a greater volume with fewer calories than other foods.” said Aram. Aram advises those who have digestive concerns to consider limiting processed grains such as pizza, breads, noodles and crackers. Another area where Aram advises caution is with liquid carbohydrates. Aram’s advice is to limit your liquid carbs to meals where you have solid foods. For instance, if you’re going to have a morning sweetened coffee drink, try to have it with a hardboiled egg. Or if you’re having a smoothie, limit the number of ounces and have a protein-veggie rich meal like a chicken Caesar salad to avoid over-consuming.” “Eating healthy often means taking more time to plan and be involved with food,” says Aram. “I encourage you to look at it as a new hobby, something that can be enjoyable and fun.” Raising some of your own food or buying from one of our many community farms may also help stimulate your interest and enjoyment of healthier eating. Enloe Diabetes Education Services is available to help with nutrition concerns related to diabetes and kidney disease. For other nutrition concerns, the service can provide information about community resources and qualified professionals. For more information, contact Diabetes Education Services at 530.332.6840.

Eating Pink Welcome Chad N. Allen, DDS
By Scott Amick, MA, CPT, NKT I would like to begin my column this month with a quote that I refer to as often as folks will listen to it. Thomas Edison explains how he (and I) feel about the treatment of disease and infirm conditions as follows:
Mark G. Womack, DDS is pleased to announce the association of Chad N. Allen, DDS to his practice of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Allen is trained in the newest techniques in the specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and will be pro providing in-office oral surgery services, as well as treating trauma patients and other complex surgical cases at Enloe Medical Center.
“The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease.” Now, I am not a doctor, but I sure do enjoy the thought of diet as a form of medicine. I don’t believe that Edison was trying to knock pharmacology, I believe that he is pointing the profession in a direction that has only recently taken center stage in the battle against diseases such as cancer. I once trained a gentleman who claimed that he had beaten cancer through diet and MEAL PLANNING. It was through this exposure that I began my search for what I would later discover was labeled “the ANTIANGIOGENIC” diet. The premiss of this meal plan can be simplified to this: certain foods have nutrient content that may limit the growth (angiogenesis) of tumors by cutting off their supply line when consumed appropriately. So, what are these magical medicine foods? According to Dr. Vincent Li, the list starts here:
- kale - vanilla extract - avocado - tomato sauce - blackberries - flounder - clementines - salmon - lingonberry - trout
- ginger - sea cucumber - sage - goose (dark) - beets - almonds - escarole - chestnut - kohlrabi - lima beans
I was less than excited to see that In and Out was not on the list. If you are interested in more information regarding the anti-angiogenic meal plan visit www.eattobeat.org or contact Advanced Body Dynamics to discuss your meal planning strategy.
Dr. Allen is now available for consultation and surgical appointments. MARK G. WOMACK, DDS CHAD N. ALLEN, DDS Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons

Just a few inches of water… by Delynn Thomas, Personal Insurance Broker dthomas@iwins.com It is difficult to think about Flood Insurance while in a severe drought. But preparing for flooding is prudent, no matter where you live and no matter what the current weather seems to indicate. Flooding season on the West Coast typically occurs between November and March.
So what can you do to prepare for an unforeseen flooding event?
- Educate yourself. Typical homeowners’ policies will exclude flood and earthquake events. Read your policies and visit www.floodsmart.gov for more information.
- Take inventory of your belongings and secure valuables in a safe deposit box or water proof container. Visit www.knowyourstuff.org for helpful hints. - Prepare your home and family. Visit www.ready.gov for additional information.
Until next time, Move with Intention. Scott Amick, MA, CPT, NKT advanced-body.com 530-781-2639
Changing weather patterns, weak levees, clogged storm drains, rapid snow melt, along with building and development are among the common causes of flooding. A few inches of water from an afternoon thunderstorm can cause thousands of dollars in damage.
- Stay safe during a flood. - Go to higher ground and do not attempt to walk or dive through flooded areas.
- Listen to a battery operated radio for storm information.
- Turn off all utilities at main power switch and close main gas valve.
It may be a dry year, but think about preparing and protecting your family home and personal property during the wet season. Just a few inches of water can cause tens of thousands of dollars in damage in minutes. Call your insurance broker to learn more about flood insurance coverage today. Happy at Home “The first time one of my clients said to me, ‘I don’t know what I’d do without you, dear’ as I brushed and clipped her hair, I was hooked. While working my way through college, I started my first caregiving job. Caring for elderly touched my heart so deeply, I knew it was what I was meant to do with my life.” Kaliahna Baxter, CSUC graduate and business entrepreneur owns Happy at Home, Chico’s only family owned and operated in-home care agency with her parents, Don and Vickie Cutler. As a caregiver for six years, she learned from her experience that the seniors who were happiest and remained independent for the longest were those that got to stay at home; from this observation, the concept for Happy at Home was born. Working together, their family soon found out that they all share this passion for caring for others and it has added meaning to each of their lives. It provides peace of mind to know you are in good hands, as growing old can be a difficult adjustment. New aches, mobility issues, and slower mind and memory function can make a person feel like a burden to their family. For many people who have been independent throughout their lives, this new feeling of helplessness can be devastating. Happy at Home wants to let people know that it’s ok if you need a little extra help with things like cooking or cleaning; and it’s ok if you need a little more than that too. Happy at Home has the heart and knowledge to help with whatever you or your family may need.
Happy at Home’s in-home care provides families with the flexibility to only pay for the care needed and it allows those that need help to remain in the comfort of their homes at an affordable price. Most importantly, the care given is just that: care. Each staff member has a true interest in their clients and love for their job. “If their heart’s not in it, we can’t hire them,” Kaliahna says. She is a perfect example of the ideal caregiver in her own daily interactions. In addition to discussing and coordinating care, she takes time to share jokes and conversation with her clients. They know they can trust her to adjust the hours of care and services as their needs change, without any additional service fees. They feel confident referring friends because care plan consultations are always free and without obligation. Grocery shopping, bathing and shower assistance, transportation and escort, laundry, and meal preparation are only some of the tasks the incredible Happy at Home caregivers do. Every caregiver is interviewed, background checked, fingerprinted, and drug screened. Staff members also participate in ongoing training and professional development to further enhance their skills. But maybe the most important and unique concept Happy at Home offers is that they take care in matching the client with the caregiver. Personalities, needs, knowledge and likes vary from person to person, and when leaving your loved one in the care of another, it is important to find someone whom they will feel
comfortable with and enjoy. At Happy at Home, a client isn’t just a client, but a part of the family. Being a locally owned business, every step and process is hand chosen and comes from heart and hard work. “Building close relationships is the part of running a family owned business that I love and the reason I chose this career,” says Kaliahna. “By getting to know our clients, I find out their personal preferences and specific needs in order to match the best of our highly qualified caregivers to their care plans.” The quality of care and the effort spent matching the right caregivers to clients sets Happy at Home apart from many other options. Their mission statement “to provide exceptional in-home care by hiring the most qualified, dedicated, compassionate caregivers so our clients can remain as independent as possible while staying in the comfort of their own homes,” is accomplished every day. Happy at Home is a family that helps families. Schedule an appointment with Happy at Home to see what their family can do for yours. Happy at Home 315 Wall St ste 4 Chico, CA 95928 (530) 774-2127

BEAUTY Q&A
Why does my skin seem less tight? As we age our skin loses elastin. Elastin is the connective tissue in the skin that is responsible for keeping the skin tight. Loss of elastin causes sagging skin and deep wrinkles.

Q: How often should I get my hair trimmed if I am growing it out? A: It truly depends on the individual. If you never or rarely have a chemical service done on your hair, and usually let your hair air-dry, then you can go longer between trims, usually eight to twelve weeks. If you regularly get your hair colored or chemically processed, you will need to get a trim more often. Plus, daily blow drying and heat styling can pull the moisture out of your hair, making it more susceptible to breakage. When a client comes to see me for their color service, I always recommend a small trim. It is a good idea to have your hair trimmed every time you color it, or every four to six weeks. A trim will make your hair look and feel better! The process of growing your hair out can feel like forever, but trimming promotes healthy growth by cutting off dead, split ends. Remember to be patient; even if you don’t feel like you are seeing any progress, your hair is growing an average of one quarter inch each month.

Q: Does shaving really make your hair grow back darker and coarser? Is waxing better? A:When we begin shaving, it’s usually because we see hair growth that we don’t want. As we age, our hair growth naturally becomes thicker. Each hair is shaped with a fine tip and a thicker, darker base. When we shave, we are cutting the hair off at its thickest and darkest part, thus the dark “stubble.” Shaving does not cause the hair to grow back thicker and darker, but is waxing a better solution to hair growth? Yes! Most people have three cycles of hair at any given time in each follicle. The first growth is the longest hair we can see. The second is either just growing out (the two hairs in one follicle syndrome) or it is right below the surface of the skin, and the third one is just beginning to form in the follicle. When we wax the first time, we remove all of growth cycle one, and some of two. Hair re-growth will appear

to happen faster after the first wax. At your second wax, the rest of the second cycle and the third are removed. This is when you will be “hairfree” for two to six weeks. When waxing, we are not cutting off the hair at its thickest part, so each hair is soft and fine.
Q: My skin always gets so dry during the colder months. Should I change my skincare routine from summer to winter? A: It is always a good idea to change up your skincare regimen twice a year. As the seasons change so does our skin’s needs. I recommend having two skincare and makeup regimens--one for summer and one for winter. Late spring through early fall I recommend a foaming cleanser, daytime moisturizer with sunscreen, anti-oxidant serum (I love vitamin-C), eye cream, toner and light-weight night moisturizer. Late fall through early spring I recommend switching to a creamier cleanser (this is also great for makeup removal), a more hydrating daytime moisturizer with sunscreen, eye cream, toner, and a hydrating night-time moisturizer. Cold air mixed with heated indoor spaces makes for dehydrated skin. Winter is also a good time to use more invasive treatments, such as vitamin-A derived creams and serums, as the sun’s rays are less intense in the winter. It is essential that you apply a high-quality sunscreen year-round. We get over 95% of our sun exposure not from laying out on the beach but by driving, walking around outside, and yes, from fluorescent lights indoors! Almost half of that exposure happens in the winter, so always wear your sunscreen!

im was always in pain. The grumpy retired Marine led a life confined to a wheelchair until he was taken in by the caring health professionals at Massage Envy Spa. With the help of an ongoing massage treatment plan and the genuine caring of one of Massage Envy’s therapists, Jim’s mood was lifted. He went from wheelchair to walker to walking independently, and he was able to live out the last part of his life in comfort. Even as he was passing away, his Massage Envy therapist was at the side of his hospital bed, massaging him as he left this world. Although Jim is no longer with us, his story continues to inspire Lindsey Kersey, Regional Manager of Massage Envy Spa here in Chico. With the true care and individualized pain management plans Massage Envy offers to each of its valued clients, these stories of life-transformation are common. “We’re all carebears here,” says Lindsey, “Even the staff at the front start their jobs thinking it will just be another job, but soon they get attached to the clients and to the rest of the staff as well.” Massage Envy Spa makes massage and facials accessible as part of your monthly health routine. Each massage and facial is customized to suit the client’s needs and each client is paired with the massage therapist or esthetician who will be the best match for the services and attention the client requires. With their monthly membership rates, you will never feel guilty about treating yourself to a little ME-time. Each month, your membership cost includes a massage or facial and if you don’t have the chance to use it within the month, it will roll over to the next. Or better yet, if you use the services more than once a month, the value is even greater. A membership gives you access to each of Massage Envy’s locations and with over 1,000 locations nationwide, you’ll never be far from your next massage or facial. There are so many benefits to massage and facials that go far beyond the hour of enjoyment and relaxation they provide in your day. With massage as a natural, healthy method of pain management, you’ll spare your body from having to metabolize and cope with the side-effects that come with pain pills. Meeting with your specially selected therapist monthly will help analyze your progression and your needs to find out exactly what works best for you and your body or skin. When it comes to facials, they should no longer be looked at as a luxury reserved 36

I Woke Up Like This! Kris Jiminez, is not your typical makeup artist. Which is fitting, because he doesn’t do typical makeup. Kris is an artsy former Marine, renegade tattoo artist, welder, ex-cop, husband and father who absolutely loves making people look and feel beautiful--permanently. He is a Certified Pigmentation Dermal Artist (the fancy word for permanent makeup artist) and he has explored the US and a broad span of careers to find his way into his own studio in Chico. It is those who let the wind carry them that end up where they’re meant to be, and we are happy to have Kris here in northern California with us! Originally from LA, Kris grew up loving art and creating his own masterpieces with colored pencil. He joined the Marine Corps where he met his wife and spent a lot of time in the South where he became interested in the artistry of tattooing. Living in Oklahoma where tattooing wasn’t legalized until 2006, Kris began to learn the basics from a friend in his basement. Although he enjoyed it, it was not realistic for him to pursue it as an outlawed career and he began to work as a welder in the oil fields. For nine years in five different states, he went from job to job and started to yearn for something more stable and stationary than oil. So the outlaw tattoo artist became a cop in Texas, which he absolutely loved. In 2012, Kris, his wife and two young children came back to California where they have family, and his mother-in-law who knew Kris’ passion for art suggested he try his hand at permanent makeup. Kris took her suggestion and ran with it. With his wife and father-in-law also encouraging him to go after this dream, he was soon certified
in Costa Mesa and has since been on the journey to opening his own studio. In August of this year, his dreams came to fruition and he opened Studio de Maquillage on the Esplanade in Chico next to Japanese Blossoms. At Studio de Maquillage, magic is possible. Whether you’re looking for a more natural enhancement or a beautifully made-up look, you can have your eyes, lashes and lips done to perfection. Kris does permanent eyeliner, lip liner, lip color, eyebrow hair and eyebrow fill color to the extent you’re comfortable with. If you’re not looking for makeup, but want a little upgrade in your look, he can fill in bald or thinning spots in head and eyebrow hair for men and women, and also offers the new trend of Skin Needling. Skin Needling is a procedure where tiny needles puncture the skin which triggers the body’s reaction to repair the affected area by rushing collagen to the site, helping reduce the look of scars, fine lines and wrinkles. Kris can combine Skin Needling and his permanent makeup artistry to help relax and camouflage burn scars all over the body for those who have suffered from burn injuries. “I love to make people look fantastic,” he says. He uses a topical anesthetic to keep his patients “pretty comfy throughout the whole thing,” and the healing time after a procedure is only 4-6 weeks for a lifetime of looking gorgeous. “You can roll out of bed, go swimming, do anything and not worry about your makeup being ruined,” says Kris. A visit to Studio de Maquillage will have you looking great, feeling great and joining the ranks of the “I woke up like this!” beauties.

Dr. Enloe (in the rear) holding his son, Newt, along with his sister, Emma Enloe, sit on the ambulance he created to transport patients twenty-five miles from West Branch to Chico via a flume.
We Built This City ENLOE’S FLUMES In the winter of 1901, a young medical graduate placed a silver watch on a counter of a pawnshop. Outside the shop, miners, loggers and farmers labored through the busy day and a town was gradually starting to emerge in between Big and Little Chico creek. The town began to show economic and practical housing potential, straying away from what used to be a gold rush “pipe-dream” settlement. Though, one thing was still lacking—a reliable hospital organization. As the young man stood, awaiting his payment of fifteen dollars for the valuable family timepiece, a blueprint was being drawn to revolutionize the local medical system forever. The watch-less architect illustrating the blueprint was Dr. Newton Thomas Enloe. Fifteen dollars, even in 1901, doesn’t seem like the means to build an institution which is now Northern California’s leading independent medical center. Thankfully, “Newt” Enloe was no fool, but a pioneer, a visionary, and fifteen dollars was more than he needed. Dr. Enloe opened his first hospital the same year in West Branch, a small settlement between Sterling City and Forest Ranch. One of the biggest quandaries with the early hospital institutions in the Butte County was the treatment and discrimination against farmers and loggers. Because the local economy revolved around mining, miners were given the opportunity of getting treated before anyone else. Enloe was very much a blue-collar doctor if there ever was such a thing. He worked alongside mill workers as a company doctor for years before taking it upon himself to open his own hospital. Dr. Enloe made sure everyone would receive the medical attention they needed regardless of the
patient’s occupation. He treated every patient as if they were family. As the autumn leaves of 1913 covered the buggy trafficked streets and buildings continued to spring up all over Chico, Dr. Enloe open the doors of a new hospital on 330 Flume Street. The hospital contained twenty-five beds and a handful of doctors and nurses. Enloe began doing the majority of his practice in Chico, but he didn’t want the hard-working demographic still residing twenty-five miles away in the foothills to be inconvenienced. So, being the innovative genius he was, Dr. Enloe developed the area’s first ambulance system. A lumber flume linking the sawmills in West Branch area to Chico also provided an instrumental tool in connecting both of Enloe’s medical sites. The Doc engineered a long wooden plank to act as a stretcher and ill and injured patients would smoothly sail down, floating on the lumber flumes-- the same way rough-cut lumber was delivered to town. Arriving at the Eighth and Pine sawmill, Enloe would receive the patients and promptly give them the treatment they needed. This was a great alternative to the long horsedrawn twenty-five mile trek, which would often lead to greater health complications and fatalities. The flume ambulance is a small but great illustration of Dr. Newton Enloe’s philanthropic, ingenuitive spirit, and the genuine consideration he had towards the public and people’s personal well-being. The exceptional surgeon could have taken many different routes in his career but he chose to lend his steady hand in building the foundation that has become a part of this city of trees we all love.

New Again Kitchen & Bath Presents
House Call
October 2014: Dog-gone Tile! BY BRIANA LINDSTROM / PHOTOS BY ERIN WENHAM
The Client
The Call
Bob is a rescue dog who lives in a beautiful home in Chico with his two adopted brothers Charlee and Doc. Bob’s beloved mother is a vivacious Italian woman who enjoys working in her garden, having friends over and, of course, cooking. After being in her home for 13 years, she felt her kitchen wasn’t bringing her the joy it should be and it was time for a change. “I was tired of the tile,” she explains, “I knew I wanted some type of stone.” So off she went on the hunt for something new.
The Call After pricing granite at several different stores around town, it seemed granite was far too expensive to be an option for the kitchen makeover. That’s when a neighbor recommended New Again Kitchen & Bath. Kevin, the owner was willing to work with the budget and find something that could make all three dogs and their mama happy.

Bob’s mom was originally interested in a jade green countertop, but when her designer Sean came to check out the kitchen, they both agreed it was a bit too overwhelming. “It was just too intense,” says Bob’s mom. So she continued to shop around and would stop back into New Again Kitchen & Bath to discuss options with Sean frequently. The two of them became good friends throughout the process. “I started to get embarrassed,” Bob’s mom confesses, “I was in there a lot and I couldn’t make up my mind! I’m so glad Sean was there to help me.” “You’re so nice, I had to help you!” Sean takes a lot of pride in his design and loves getting to know his clients and help them make the right choices for their homes.
AFTER Milky Way Granite New Appliances Customized Curve in Granite to Show Wood Detail Under Bar
The Cure As any good mother knows, sometimes when you need help choosing the right look the best thing to do is to consult your children. Doc was there to help and accompanied his mom and Sean to New Again Kitchen & Bath’s granite yard in Sacramento. After looking at slabs and slabs of granite, the final selection was made. The gorgeous “Milky Way” granite is perfect for the whole family. “Well first of all, I love Milky Way candy bars,” says Bob’s mom. “And if you look over here,” she points to a bit of color in the granite next to her stove, “That fleck is the color of Bob. And the other colors in the granite are the colors of Doc and Charlee.”
From the split level bar-countertop to the customized curve in the granite that shows the wood detail under the bar to the new appliances, everything was done precisely to Bob’s mom’s taste with Sean’s guidance and all three dogs’ approval. Sean and his team at New Again Kitchen & Bath were clean, precise and quick and in the end, a kitchen was reborn and a new friendship was formed.

ANTIQUE DIY:
cute coffee corner
PROJECT AND PHOTOS BY ERIN WENHAM
The debut of our monthly antique do-it-yourself project was inspired by this quirky pair of vintage wooden shutters we discovered at Well Worn in Oroville. There are so many simple ways that shutters can be repurposed, adding charm and character to your home. We chose the functional route and transformed ours into a decorative way to display our favorite mugs (and our love for coffee).

Paint on the charm!
Hook it up!
Spell it out!
Hang it up and grab a mug!
We used this fantastic Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Barcelona Orange (available at Well Worn). This matte finish paint is not only very easy to use, but it creates that distressed look we all love. The beauty of this paint is that it rarely requires any sanding or priming, dries quickly, and can be used on just about any indoor or outdoor surface. We chose to do one coat of paint to let a bit of the natural wood color show through.
Screw-in hooks are a simple and inexpensive way to add a functional element to any piece, and are available at any hardware store. We chose to add four hooks to our shutters in a zigzag pattern, but several more could be added to increase hanging space.
Adding simple words or phrases is a fun way to draw attention to your piece or create a theme. Wooden letters like this can be purchased at your local craft store and are easily adhered with super glue.
We used a simple sawtooth picture hanger to mount our shutters. If you plan to add more mug hooks, you may want to fasten a hanger on each side of your shutters for extra reinforcement.

What if the Stock Market Has a Big Pullback? Few words characterize today’s financial markets like uncertainty. When the federal government can be switched off like a light, and international terrorism causes markets to flip-flop unpredictably, investors are left wondering what they should do. On the surface, the markets are higher than ever. It’s scary to buy or hold into all time highs, with recent memory (2000, 2007) telling us new highs mean a bear market is imminent. In an attempt to make major market movements work for their portfolios rather than against, some investors attempt to time the market by moving investments to cash. Market timing is basically the strategy of trying to predict future market movements in order to time buying and selling decisions. The problem is that investors usually guess wrong, missing out on the best market plays. Does the cost of trying to time the market make a big difference in your returns? Missing out on the market’s top-performing days can be costly. This chart illustrates how a hypothetical $10,000 investment in the S&P 500 could have been affected by missing the best days during the 20-year period between January 1, 1993 and December 31, 2012. Keep in mind,
by Renée Michel, MBA and Joe Sweeney, CFP Financial Advisors at Asset Management Group
during this illustration the market hit new highs in 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2006 and 2007. Currently, the market is fundamentally supported by an average forward price-to-earnings ratio of 15.6 (which is in our opinion, a more important measure than sheer index price). Dividend yields are still near 2%, and the risk-free rate in government bonds is the lowest it’s been in decades. Stocks, in our opinion, still offer the most attractive risk-adjusted return at this point.
Bottom line: It’s virtually impossible to accurately find the top or bottom of the market consistently. Our experience shows that time in the market is more important than timing the market.

Soil Care Tips With winter just around the corner, it’s never too early to be start preparing for next year’s garden. Revitalizing your soil biology is essential for reusing your summer soil. Top dressing now will ensure the richest soil come summertime. Some great amendments are compost, humic acid, worm castings, gypsum, glacial rock dust, and various guanos.
Care: Oakleaf Hydrangeas are somewhat drought resistant and handle heat much better than traditional hydrangeas. They are also more cold tolerant than other varieties. They grow and bloom well in areas with well-drained soil, morning sun, and afternoon shade. Avoid over watering, which can lead to root rot.

Water Conservation in the Garden During this record-breaking drought, it is crucial that we all do our part to conserve our precious water. Here are some simple tips to cut back on everyday water usage in your garden.
1. Adjust your lawn mower to the
height of 1.5 to 2 inches. Taller grass shades roots and holds soil moisture better than short grass.

UPGRADED LIVING | OCTOBER 2014 | UPGRADEDLIVING.COM
Description: A four season shrub native to America that has beautiful large oak like leaves and elegant white spire flowers in the summer. The foliage turns to beautiful burgundy red to orange in the Fall. In winter the beautiful foliage can add interest to a garden bed with other shade loving plants that have lost all of their leaves.
2. Water your summer lawns once every three days and your winter
lawn once every five days.
3. Don’t water your lawn on windy days when most of the water blows away or evaporates. 4. Water your plants deeply but less frequently to encourage deep root growth and drought tolerance. 5. Consider changing your lanscaping altogether to incorporate “water-wise” plants. They require less water and maintenance.

This is our new raccoon. She was born in early 2014, and came to us at about four months old. She is here because a family took her out of the wild and kept her as a pet. It is EXTREMELY ILLEGAL to keep wildlife as pets. All native species belong to the state of California. Because the family kept her for so long, she imprinted on humans. If she were in the wild she would not instinctively know how to hunt or how to care for herself. In addition, she is not afraid of humans, which is vital for animals to survive in the wild. This raccoon will make an excellent ambassador for her species. Fun Fact: They are known for washing their food before they eat it.
FARM FRESH:
TJ Farms
A
long the lengthy stretch of Chico Avenue, a plantation farmhouse suddenly emerges with long brick pillars and a beautiful fountain located only a few feet from the front door. The house was built in 1937 and is in beautiful shape, kept up by the Moss family who bought it in 1952. The three stories of the house still retain a stunning white glow and the surrounding orchards are in full bloom every year. Originally starting as a thirty-five acre commercial nut farm, TJ Farms is now blossoming with much more on the 135-acre property. The Moss family uses their property for an elegant wedding venue, farm tours for elementary schools and a location to process the delicious “Dave’s Dazzling Dills.” Getting ready for October (one of the busiest months of the year), Mary took Upgraded Living’s photographers on a tour of the farm and we got to sit down and talk with Dave to find out how TJ Farms came to be such a local success. How did TJ Farms begin? Dave: Well I came back home from the army in 1972 and my folks still lived in this house. I grew up here and didn’t want to live in it. At the time there was no heat or air in the whole place. Eventually I did buy it and started working on the house. A few parts are add-ons like the big barn in the back. How did the orchards expand? Dave: I went back into commercial nut harvesting when my first son was 6 months old. Then I bought 100 acres of young almond trees in ‘77. In 1983 the river flooded and killed all the trees, so we refinanced. We got it all started up but got flooded again in ‘86. Killed every tree. The bank said we were overcapitalized and cut off all our funds. So we sold the almonds and also ten acres on each end, giving us the 15 we have now. We built a commercial kitchen and grew kiwis on the north side of Chico. That’s how we started canning kiwi jams and mustards. In
the late ‘80s we gave the kiwis back to the guy we bought ‘em from because we got 55 inches of rain that year and it flooded ‘em all. We grow our own cucumbers, and brine them to make “Dave’s Dazzlin Dills.” Ten acres of pumpkins are open to the public the first Saturday of October every year. Where did the name TJ come from? Dave: It’s named after Tim and John, our sons. What is “Share Your Harvest”? Dave: A program that comes and picks food at the farm all at their own expense. The produce goes to places like The Salvation Army kitchen, The Well, and Esplanade House. Last year TJ farms provided around 4,000 lbs of food all together. What can you find at the farm? Dave: Two miniature donkeys (one looks just like Donkey from Shrek), a widowed turkey, 3 lambs that stay in the pumpkin patch and 14 wagons with seats. There are clippers in the wagon. You go out and find the pumpkin you love and cut it yourself. There is a hay bale obstacle course and a tree rope swing. On the weekends we offer hayrides and there will be a bounce house. There is also a Country Store in the barn. The corn shellers and grinders are in there. Make sure to keep your fingers out of those things when you crank the handle. How is TJ Farms unique from other farms? Dave: We are the only wedding venue with a pumpkin patch and one of the few with both outdoor and indoor air-conditioned facilities. We make pickled green tomatoes and sell out of our dill pickles every year. TJ Farms is open every day. Weekends 10:00-6:00 and weekdays 2:00-6:00.

How To Decorate With Art BY MICHELE FRENCH
My friend Reed has a t-shirt which he sometimes wears to art receptions. It has an image on the front of a Dali-esque, lime green sofa floating in mid-air. Above the sofa is a vaguely Picasso-esque painting in a heavy frame similarly suspended in space. Below the sofa and the painting are the words: “Good art doesn’t match your sofa.” The striking image and pithy statement might be a mantra for novice art collectors. In fact, it might be said you should acquire the art first and then the furnishings. Opportunities for acquiring art that you appreciate are numerous. You can purchase posters, photos or prints at antique stores, thrift shops or yard sales and frame or mat them. My friend with the witty, arty t-shirt started his immense art collection buying first run prints when he was an undergraduate at Chico State. The reason he chose prints to begin his collection is because they’re less expensive than other types of original art. When you fall in love with an art piece, you can get creative with your decor to surround it. Not only can you use the colors to guide you, but you may also pull from the time-period, shapes and general mood of the art. For example, if you’re displaying a 1930’s themed art poster, you might pull a few colors from it such as red and black, popular colors for decor in the ‘30’s, and use those to select furniture for the living room. A black leather arm chair, a bright red sofa and streamlined chrome fixtures would lend a sophisticated, yet comfortable, atmosphere to a living room, and play well off the art piece. Whether you have a number of small works or one large one, there are considerations as to their display. It almost goes without saying that small pictures go well in narrow spaces while larger ones
need more room. Art should relate to a piece of furniture in one way--a piece of art should not be longer a piece of furniture. Art on the wall should be no more than 75% the length of the furniture below it. A large painting can make a bold, dramatic statement while accenting an architectural feature of a room such as a recessed space. Color is an important consideration as bright, vibrant colors lend an air of excitement while soft, neutral colors are calming. Landscapes can open up a small room or windowless space seeming to provide a “window” where there is none. Groups of pictures can be hung in horizontal lines, vertical lines, diagonal lines, offset arrangements, symmetrical arrangements or asymmetrical arrangements. Hanging pictures horizontally tends to be calming, giving the wall an illusion of width while ones hung vertically will give a feeling of height. Strong diagonals add drama and excitement. Symmetrical arrangements give a balance which is pleasing and, again, calming. Asymmetrical groupings, however, are eye-catching, fun and informal. How should you select art? Your own taste should guide you. If you feel comfortable with Thomas Kinkade you shouldn’t let the opinions of others dissuade you. You’ll be living with the art you choose; your friends won’t. A captain of industry once bought a very expensive, white-onwhite, minimalist, abstract painting and put it over his ornate, late-Victorian desk. His family, friends and colleagues were appalled. “It doesn’t MEAN anything!” they all said. His reply to them was, “It doesn’t have to mean anything for me to enjoy it.”
A Special Thanks BY DEBRA LUCERO
Maria Phillips in front of one of her original paintings.
ARTOBERFEST & Upgraded Living honor the contributions of Art Advocate and Community Builder Maria Phillips. Born in Italy and raised in Venezuela, Maria is an art historian who studied at UCLA and received a PhD in Renaissance art history (with an emphasis on architecture and urban planning). Her energy and enthusiasm have lead to creative exhibitions like the annual Chico Icons and the Snow Goose Festival Pacific Flyway Wildlife Art exhibit. When Bidwell Mansion State Historic Park looked as though it were going to close, she stepped up to be a part of a leadership team that quickly organized to keep the Mansion open. Maria has been described as “… fun-loving, caring, humorous, serious and intelligent.” She is a founding member and president of the Chico Visual Arts Alliance (ChiVAA) – we believe she secretly loves to make up clever acronyms whenever given the chance. She rarely says “no” to a good art cause or community service and is the sole proprietor of Avenue 9 Gallery. Maria has lead, coerced, advocated, collaborated and brought together artists and organizations in Chico for the past decade. She is a community hero who uses the power of art to better our lives economically and socially. She consistently uses her many talents to preserve the special character of our natural and built environment, winning the Mayor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts in 2012 in Chico.
You are loved Maria Phillips. You have made Chico and Butte County a better place. We are blessed to have had your creative thinking and active influence in our lives.
