As we stare at the sky Our thoughts travel along with wind. Calm, soothing, swiftly Beyond our physicalpresence. Towards a place inside our hearts Higher than the clouds.

Our spirits are alight. Emotionsflow through our veins, Combining a balanced whole. Our qualities ofbody, will and mind Create our way oflife, Through ourjoysfound in effort.

Our highly valued spirit of participation Not to win but to take part Not the triumph but the struggle. Mutual understanding with a spirit offriendship, Solidarity andfairplay Nobel, majestic, initiative and intuitive.

Our selfdiscipline and our dedication Combines with our motivation

To give us strength to accomplish the challenge. Never give in, never let go, Never lose sight ofour bigger pictures. When the going seems tough The tough start dreaming. There are always mountains to climb, Rivers to cross, Barriers to break, Goals to achieve.

Listen to your soul, heart and mind. Achieveyour desires. Fulfillyour aspirations. Believe in yourself. You can always do it. Justfollowyour dreams.

The Sun will always shine As grass will always grow. Clouds will alwaysfloat by. The sky is our limit. To take part is the greatest achievement ofall.

As we stare at the sky Our thoughts travel along with the wind.

Calm, soothing, sivifily Beyond ourphysicalpresence. Towards a place inside our beans Higher than clouds.

Dreams can always come true...

2000 has again proved to be a creative

and exciting year in the Visual Arts

area. We welcomed Ms Emma Hawkins, teaching Visual Arts and Ms

Jacqueline Ward, teaching senior Media into the Arts faculty. The start ofTerm I saw the introduction of the restructured study designs for Studio Arts, Media and Visual Communication and Design. The new courses and practical components provided both a challenge and new avenues for students to explore. In Term II, Art staff along with a team of eight talented Year 11 students started work on the designing and construction of the sets and props for the College production ‘Annie’ . This was a big but exciting task and the team worked hard after school and during the Term II holidays. Thirty-six senior students began Life Drawing classes in Term III for six weeks. The results were wonderful as their skills and control of rhe subject improved greatly.

Year 11 Studio Arts were given a wonderful opportunity during Term IV to share the knowledge and experience of Sr Rosemary Crumlin, an Art educator, who is experienced in religious art. She discussed interesting aspects of religious art and aboriginal artworks. Our Visual and Performing Arts festival in Term IV again showcased the wide variety of talent within the College. Examples ofwork from every student from Year 7-12 were exhibited and highlighted the areas of design, drawing, painting, printmaking, construction, ceramics and photography. Thanks must go to our Art teachers - Ms Emma Hawkins Mr Andrew Landrigan, Ms Amanda Nunn, Ms Marnie Thomas and Ms Jacqueline Ward for their wonderful leadership and enthusiasm.

The College thanks Kirsten

Smart of Year 12 for the loan of her Artwork, which hung in the western stairwell during 2000. I congratulate Catherine Angel also ofYear 12 on rhe selection of her drawing/oil-painting piece, which will hang in the stairwell for 2001.

I would like to take this opportunity

to thank all of the Art staff for their hard work during 2000. Also our Arts technician, Mrs Helen McCormick who has again done a thorough job in and around all areas of the Arts. Good luck to Ms Jacqueline Ward who leaves us at the end of the year. Her involvement, commitment and creative ideas have been much appreciated by staff and students. DRAMA

The Drama Department this year has continued to develop the skills and talents ofour students from Year 7 to 12. With the phasing in of the new look VCE units next year; we bid a fond farewell to the "old" and the performers ofthe "old". In Semester 2, the Year 11 Drama students presented their ensemble performance "Still haven't found what I’m looking for..." at the final Year 11 Assembly. "This powerfol performance, written by the students, contrasted the public personas with the tragedy in their lives, of a number of famous people, including Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, The Jackson Five and Tina Turner. The dramatic performance included powerfol impersonations which were both comical and at times quite moving." (Ms Pauline Cutajar). Earlier in the year, Louise Van lersel (Year 12 Drama) presented her solo performance based on the character ofCath Walker as pan of the College’s celebration for Aboriginal Reconciliation. A number of students took part in the Arts Evening this year - producing a range ofsmall acts, whilst others demonstrated the making (in newspaper) and wearing ofhistorical costumes. Added to this, the sparkle of champagne, nibbles and art and music presented by students ofthe College - a great night was experienced by all. Mrs Irene Wrochna Drama Coordinator

This year has proven to be a wonderful year for the musical life of Ave Maria College. We have continued to move forward in developing our Instrumental Music program, with the formation of new ensembles and the introduction ofan evening Soiree. A combined band ofover 60 members was formed with St Bernard and St Columba’s College early in Semester 2. Students have attended weekly rehearsal at St Bernard’s under the baton ofMr John Crowley and have made excellent progress with their ensemble playing abilities. A Junior Rock Band was also formed to encourage those students in Year 7 and 8 taking music lessons at school to learn the joys ofbeing in an ensemble. The results achieved in only a short amount oftime have been tremendous and I look forward to further success next year. Their debut performance at the Soiree was fabulous. The Soiree was held in early September and provided an opportunity for those students undergoing AMEB examinations to have an audience to practice performing in front of. Though a somewhat nerve racking experience, the evening was very relaxed and some excellent items were presented, including over 25 individual performers, the Stage Band, Senior Rock Band, Junior Rock Band, String Ensemble and Choir. A big thank you must go to all those who assisted with and supported the evening. I also had the opportunity ofattending the annual Soundhouse conference in July and am pleased to announce that we will be including a number ofnew technology programs, demonstrated at this conference, next year in our curriculum. They are going to provide students with the most advanced technological information and compositional assistance possible. Finally I must say a big thank you to Ms Pauline Hong and all of the instrumental music stafffor their diligent work and support of the Music program at rhe College. Their efforts have been outstanding and 1 look forward to bigger and better things next year. Ms Lousie Sharpe Music Coordinator
