Welcome Fall 2015!! Welcome to Avena’s Fall 2015 Newsletter Edition! One thing you can count on a typical Canadian discussion, is the weather! Most of us here at the Red Deer head office begins by asking, “How is the weather over there?” Depending on our season, it’s either too hot with gross humidity or it’s darn cold and we’re digging three feet of snow! Most Canadians can agree that we all love the fall! Not too hot or cold, it’s just right, even if it’s short lived. Fall is a perfect season to prepare for warmer clothes but enjoy the brisk wind with the warmth of the sun coming down. Harvest season is coming to an end and the farmers markets are finishing their last haul before closing. Now is the time to soak in the beautiful array of fall colours and mentally prepare for the winter season. Stock up on fresh apples and hardy foods that can store for the cooler months. Enjoy this Newsletter edition! As I loved writing it!

Or, if you still wish to purchase these products on cold days, try asking for a faster shipping method to lessen the likelihood of damage during transport. The following are products that we feel may have their packaging compromised due to cold weather:
Ionic Magnesium, Ionic Calcium Magnesium, PIN Magnesium, Coconut Oil & Silver Colloid products. *Please note this does not reduce the quality of these products but rather increases the potential for the packaging to be compromised.

Nutrition for the Mind What is your favourite part of your body? Funny question to ask isn’t it? Would it be the heart because it’s a crucial part to living? Or the tongue that delivers flavours of the food we eat? Or instead, how about the nose we use to smell delicious food! But let’s ‘think’ about what gives us these human abilities… How about the brain? Without this thoughtful organ we couldn’t enjoy the things we do. Like recalling fond memories of that family Thanksgiving dinner, with all the tasteful food and the delicious aromas! Let’s give this topic some attention and discover how nutrition can optimize the mind! There have been many discoveries on how to feed the brain and nourish it. Science and Orthomolecular medicine have come a long way to uncover how the brain is fueled by our food. All nutrients (which are fats, proteins (amino acids), minerals, vitamins, water) contribute to brain functions and even our emotions are effected. This is just skimming the top of this topic, so let’s get in to the details and find out how these components work!
Did you know? Walnuts contain a number of neuroprotective compounds including, vitamin E, foliate, melatonin, omega-3 fats, and antioxidants. Research shows walnut consumption may support brain health, including increasing inferential reasoning in young adults. One study also found that consuming highantioxidant foods like walnuts "can decrease the enhanced vulnerability to oxidative stress that occurs in aging," "increase health span," and also "enhance cognitive and motor function in aging.” - Dr. Mercola - May 19, 2014 News & Views To A Healthier You!
Ever thought about how you think and feel after a meal? You could feel sluggish, moody, and tired, or happy and content. A heavy spread of food can have one experience a sluggish and slow feeling. Think of that 8 course Thanksgiving meal, it’s delicious but the lethargic feeling afterwards changes the mood into an exhausted, and sleepy sensation. Mixing an assortment of foods in one sitting slows the whole intestinal system down, leaving the body no choice but to put all available energy towards the digestive system. One of the biggest health studies in Britain funded as ONUK – (Optimum Nutrition UK) Involved 37,000 people taking place in 2004, found that a large portion of the participants had suffered frequently from the following: (Holford 38)
Became impatient quickly (82%) Low energy levels (80%) Energy less than it used to be (76%) Feel have too much to do (67%) Become anxious or tense easily (64%) Have PMS/PMT (Women only) (63%) Easily became angry (53%) Suffer from depression (44%) Have difficulty concentrating (43%) Become nervous/hyperactive (38%) Have poor memory/difficulty learning (32%)

Fall 2015 Edition
The Gut - Brain Connection Do these statistics sound familiar? Generally most people struggle to keep up and try working on tiredness, tension, nervousness, and depression. Too many are also living with mental health issues from Autism, ADHD, and Alzheimer’s, among other disorders. In the UK, recent research shows that each year: (Holford 45)
350,000 elderly people are diagnosed with cognitive impairment 185,000 develop dementia (that’s 500 people per day!) 1 in 10 women are on antidepressants
Adolescent mental disorders
1-6 kids have special educational needs 1 in 3 live with behavioral, attention, and learning problems 1 in 86 in the UK have Autism
Can these conditions be prevented? Yes! When we acknowledge that the brain and body are made entirely of molecules derived from food, air, and water. Not from molecules like alcohol – which can affect brain functions. (Holford 5) The body needs rounded nutrition, but if it becomes deficient, and or toxic from pollution or bowel toxemia – the brain can experience chemical imbalances. Let’s take a look at other brain stimulants that can negatively affect our mind and body, the ones that we self-prescribe ourselves. We call them the anti-nutrients like oxidants, alcohol, sugar, stimulants, stress, toxic minerals, and allergy provoking foods. These brain stimulants greatly affect the mind and it’s because we’re feeding our second brain… the stomach. Yes! The gut and the brain are connected organs – food changes your mood! If you use caffeine, sugar, cigarettes alcohol, or other stimulants – try to eliminate them for a period of 90 days. This can make a huge difference in mood and energy when these are taken out the diet and lifestyle.
News & Views To A Healthier You!
“When there are struggles to recall a memory or a thought, this may be a sign of poor nourishment.” Nearly every chemical that controls the brain is also located in the stomach region, including hormones and neurotransmitters Serotonin, Dopamine, Glutamate, GABA and Norepinephrine. In fact, 95% of the Serotonin in your body resides in your digestive system. We can use nutrition to achieve mental bliss, awareness, and clarity. Detoxify the bowels with a healing diet and restore nutrient deficiencies with Avena’s whole food supplements to enhance brain function.
Did you know? The gut brain connection: It used to be thought that all our thinking is done by neurons in the brain. We now know that the digestive system contains 100 million neurons and produces as many neurotransmitters as the brain. The gut, for example, produces two thirds of the body’s serotonin, the “happy” neurotransmitter. So in essence, you’re feeding two brains. Every time you eat something, it sends signals to the brain because the gut and the brain are in permanent communication. This is why the right foods can make you happy, and the wrong foods can make you feel anxious or depressed. – Patrick Holford

Brain foods in a Nutshell Did you know? “Every day we have around 6,000 thoughts – most of them repeat. Every single thought you have is represented by a ripple of activity across the network of nerves called your brain. The brain is a network of neurons – special nerves that connect other neurons. You’ve got 100 billion neurons connecting thousands of others.” – Patrick Holford
Here are 5 essential brain boosting foods! Anyone in any mental state can benefit from these foods, because they’re fundamental to brain functions. (Holford 10)
Glucose – Is brain fuel Fats – Good essential fats are vital, 60% of the brain is fat Phospholipids – Fundamental building blocks of cellular membranes Amino Acids – The brains messengers (bio available protein) Intelligent nutrients – Vitamins and minerals ‘fine tune’ the mind
How does the brain receive messages? When neurons send messages to one another, they’re sent and received at this station called the receptor. These stations are made out of essential fats (found in fish and seeds), phospholipids (present in eggs, fish, meats, nuts and seeds), and amino acids—the raw material of protein. (Holford 59)
Neurotransmitters are made from amino acids. Different types of amino acids make distinct neurotransmitters for example: Serotonin the happy feelings made by Tryptophan Adrenaline and Dopamine the motivating emotions made by Phenylalanine Turning amino acids into neurotransmitters is a complex job. Enzymes, as we call them ‘our workers’ or ‘sparks of life’ is involved in this conversion, but depends on vitamins and minerals and distinct amino acids to help complete the job.
“Neurotransmitters are the brain chemicals that communicate information throughout our brain and body. They relay signals between nerve cells, called “neurons.” The brain uses neurotransmitters to tell your heart to beat, your lungs to breathe, and your stomach to digest. They can also affect mood, sleep, concentration, weight, and can cause adverse symptoms when they are out of balance. Neurotransmitter levels can be depleted many ways. As a matter of fact, it is estimated that 86% of Americans have suboptimal neurotransmitter levels. Stress, poor diet, neurotoxins, genetic predisposition, drugs (prescription and recreational), alcohol and caffeine usage can cause these levels to be out of Quoted from: neurogistics.com optimal range.“

Supplement Research Dr. David Benton measured IQ scores of 90 school children and gave 30 of them a high dose multivitamin, 30 a dummy pill and 30 nothing. After 8 months the IQ’s were reevaluated. Only those children on the vitamins had a staggering increase in their non-verbal IQ of over 10 points! Since this study was published more than a decade ago, 10 other studies have confirmed that supplements boost children’s IQ.
Dr. Bernard Rimland from California compared the results of 1,591 hyperactive children treated with drugs to those of 191 hyperactive children given nutritional supplements. The nutritional supplements approach was 18 times more effective. Yet, despite this, drug prescriptions for children are almost doubling every year.
Dr. Carl Birmingham from the Eating Disorders Clinic in Vancouver, Canada, gave people with anorexia a Zinc supplement or a placebo. Those taking Zinc increased their body weight twice as rapidly as those given the placebo pills.
Dr. Abram Hoffer from Canada has treated 5,000 people diagnosed with Schizophrenia with high doses of vitamin B3 and Vitamin C. His published 40 year follow up reports reveal a 90% cure rate – defined as free of symptoms, able to socialize with family and friends. Despite the lifetime research and results, Hoffer’s approach to Schizophrenia has been largely sidelined.
Bernard Gesch from the University of Oxford gave prison inmates supplements of vitamins, minerals, and essentials fats, or placebos, and demonstrated a dramatic 35% decrease in aggressive acts only in those taking the supplements.
*For more of these studies please read the book: Optimum Nutrition of the Mind, by Patrick Holford (Holford 47)
“Optimum brain nutrition isn’t just about getting the right nutrients. It’s also about minimizing the ‘antinutrients’. These include oxidants, alcohol, sugar, stimulants, and stress, toxic minerals, and allergy provoking foods: the Seven Brain Drainers” – Patrick Holford News & Views To A Healthier You!

Fall 2015 Edition
Nutrition For Life! The Good Fats: Our brain is 60% fat! All these low fat diets are dampening and draining brain functions! Add those good fats back in like Coconut Oil, Hemp Oil, avocados etc. The body needs the right ratio of Omegas in order for the body to deliver these healthy fats and the right amounts for the nerves and neurons to work. Try to avoid the deep fried fats or hydrogenated trans fats. (The body is unable to properly digest hydrogenated trans fats.) The ideal amount of healthy fats to consume is 10-20% of overall calorie intake. ADD: Lipase or Enhanced Digestive Enzymes to digest with ease.
Nutrition Matters Now that we’ve covered the importance of how the brain runs on nutrients and how it can help restore brain function, let’s make a small reminder here so that we can walk in to our kitchens and begin a new found love for food, and make a difference in our health! Carbohydrates: Go in to your pantry and get rid of any refined carbs! Good complex carbohydrates are ideal and essential for gut and mental health. Complex carbs like wild rice, quinoa, beans, and lentils digest slowly in the intestinal system, giving the brain consistent and steady energy from glucose, and essential nutrients for the neurotransmitters to optimize its performance. Add Enzymes to boost the positive effects. Refined carbs have no value of any vitamin or mineral content, leaving the body deficient in delivering the goods for the brain to function at its best. Food for thought, 40% of the carbohydrates you eat, go to the brain for fuel! Phospholipids: These intelligent fats are present in eggs, fish, meats, nuts, seeds, and amino acids (the raw material in protein). When we say amino acids, supplements like our RP3 which is substantial source of complete essential and non-essential amino acids. This product is amazing in increasing the value of phospholipids for the brain and makes them more easily absorbed.
News & Views To A Healthier You!
Protein: Almost all neurotransmitters are made from amino acids. How well your brain receives amino acids from your digestive system determines how you think and feel. It’s not about eating just meat to get the value of protein. It’s also the availability of the amino acids from the foods that are broken down in the digestion process that are important, and thus… the body utilizes these nutrients (amino acids) to work where the body where needs it for instance, sending amino acids to the brain in order for the neurotransmitters to send messages. Mix up your whole foods and add an array of proteins from hemp, chia seeds, nuts, seeds, and many more plant based proteins. Have at least 45g of protein a day. ADD: RP3 to experience the easiest to digestible protein available. Nutrients – Fruits and Veggies: The front runners are the components mentioned above, but the behind the scene workers are the master tuners. Vitamins and minerals play a huge role in the delivery process of amino acids, delivery of the glucose in to energy, helps build the brains nervous system, and keeping everything running top notch! Where do you get these nutrients? In all of your fresh foods like deep greens, berries, fresh vegetables, nuts, and seeds. This variety of fresh foods contains all the vitamin and mineral components needed for the brain. Consume at least a minimum 5-7 servings daily. ADD: Vitamin Supreme and Minerals to optimize cellular functions and help restore any deficiencies.
Did you know? It doesn’t matter how nutrient rich your diet is if your body can’t unpack and harness the bounty. Probiotics and Enzymes ensure that you absorb and use every extractable nutrient from the foods you eat. 9

How Avena Supplements Can Improve Brain Function Herb Cocktail - One of the back bone products of Avena. Restoring our bowels and achieving proper eliminations is so crucial to the health of the body. If the bowels are sluggish, then the body can experience mental fog, headaches, and irritability. Bowel management is the most important key to the connection between the gut and the brain.
Protein (Amino Acids) – We’ve heard this numerous times in this newsletter. Amino acids are vital to brain functions. Optimal nutrition and getting bio-available amino acids improve the mood, energy, and health of the mind. Avena has the advantage of a plant based RAW protein powder with an incredible quality of amino acids from each serving.
Enzymes - Super digestive and Enhanced Enzymes: These two workers are the reasons your brain receive any nutrition at all, our current diets are depressingly deficient. Super Digestive Enzyme is a strong enzyme blend that aids in bringing up the metabolic processes in the body – allowing cellular functions to run optimally and cleaning the blood that is delivery nutrients and toxins to our brains. Enhanced Enzymes come in to support the digestive enzymes in the body. The activity before the metabolic process comes in to play; increasing digestive enzymes and allows an easy break down of the nutrients, and delivers these components throughout the body. If the digestive system is unable to breakdown the food, this could leave undigested proteins in the bowels creating bowel toxemia, leading to the “One True Disease” Proteolytic Probiotics – We can make a whole new conversation on how bacteria plays such a huge role in brain functions and emotions, but remember how the gut and the brain are sister organs? When there are incidences of low flora in the gut, it can lead to a fluctuation of emotions. Increasing good bacteria will allow proper digestion and improve emotional state.

RP3 Blends have a dense mixture of Hemp, Goji Berry, and Sprouted Pea protein. The value from this product comes from the bioavailable amino acids, and the omegas from the hemp! Along with protein digesting enzymes & probiotics to amplify the absorption. It’s a great way to get a full value of amino acids in a shake. E-Fusion is much different than the RP3, but in a good way. This is comparing apples to oranges. E-fusion has a huge ingredient list of whole foods and has a high content of Vitamin E. The value of the nutrients in this powder is the perfect to complement the RP3. So you have the dense protein and calories from the RP3 and the whole food mix and vitamins from E-Fusion. These two powders can deliver a complete source of your complex carbohydrates and proteins in one serving! *Vitamin E helps prevent chain reactions of damage when oxidants enter the brain (Holford 205)

Fall 2015 Edition
Did you know? A single puff of a cigarette contains trillion oxidants, which rapidly travel to your brain. This contains high levels of a heavy metal called Cadmium; gradual accumulation of this depletes Zinc. Smoking is also a known risk factor leading to strokes – the 3rd most common cause of death - Where the brain is starved of blood because of damage to the arteries supplying it. (Holford 203,204) Vitamin Supreme – We can’t stress enough on how important vitamins are for the body and the brain. It’s valuable to get your vitamins from food and supplement to also ensure the delivery of all the B-Vitamins for the brain to perform at its best. Avena’s Vitamin Supreme supplies all B Vitamins and paired with Amino Acids ands Minerals to ensure absorption. *Deficiencies of any of the B-vitamins will quickly affect how we think and feel. (Holford 170)
Electric C- Vitamin C has roles in helping the balance of neurotransmitters. Did you know that Vitamin C helps recycle Vitamin E? Higher levels of ascorbic acid have been associated with better memory. (Holford 206) Minerals Real at Last – Minerals have a huge role in emotions. Any slight deficiency can manifest symptoms for example; manganese deficiency can produce signs of insomnia, restlessness, and elevated blood pressure. (Holford 182) *Without minerals and vitamins, metabolism becomes inefficient, contributing to poor energy levels, concentration, and weight control.

Ionic Zinc – Zinc is an amazing mineral! All of the essential minerals are awesome, but Zinc has a highlight on how great it is for the body and the mind. Getting the proper value of Zinc in the diet helps improve memory, developing brains in adolescents, prevents oxidation, and the synthesis of serotonin and melatonin. *Zinc deficiency can be associated with schizophrenia, depression, anxiety, anorexia, hyperactivity, and autism. Other indicators of low Zinc are stress, hormone imbalances, PMS (contraceptive pill contains excess copper, which can offset Zinc), frequent alcohol consumption, and blood sugar problems. (Holford 183/184) Herbal Brilliance - This incredible formula is designed to increase blood flow to your brain. Which will provide higher levels of nourishment and faster detoxification. Customers have been reporting increased clarity, concentration, and improved brain functions for over 20 years! Experience the power of your own brain with this brilliant formula!

Super Food - Is amazing when it comes to alkalizing the blood, chelating heavy metals, and giving a huge rounded list of greens, deep sea greens, and array of essential minerals like iodine. Super Food gives an incredible serving of your important greens for the day. This in turn helps brain function and optimizes cellular function.
Ionic or P.I.N Magnesium – Magnesium helps the nervous system. Any signs like muscle cramps is an indication of Magnesium deficiency. As well, this mineral has a huge role in emotions. Lacking this mineral can also lead to irritability, aggressiveness, and depression.

How Society Makes Exercise a Punishment for Eating and Why we Need This to Stop! - Rosalyn Fung Do you ever say or hear, “I better work this cheesecake off tomorrow!” or “Good thing I just did my Cross Fit class, so
However, associating food with exercise in this manner is not meant to create feelings of pride, self-love, or joy!!! Rather, it’s associating that these “bad foods” mean you will have to work it off through selfpunishment (exercise) or you will suffer the “worse thing ever”, according to our narrow minded views of what is considered attractive in our society”…consequences of weight/fat gain! This kind of approach instills fear, guilt, shame, embarrassment into us, and makes us think we have a lack of willpower and are too weak for “giving in” to these “bad” foods. This kind of messaging needs to stop!!! I’m always encouraging people to stop labeling food as good or bad. Foods have no intrinsic or moral value of good or bad food is neutral. Just enjoy food for what it is. When you learn to tune into your body’s own inner wisdom, it will tell you if this food is desirable or undesirable, from the feedback your body gives you (e.g., after
eating a certain kind of food, do you feel bloated, tired, brain fog, constipated, gassy, pain, headache, moody, or do you feel energized, light, clear minded, emotionally stable)? Some people can eat wheat and it makes them feel energized. Other people feel bloated and tired after eating wheat. Who is to judge that food as good or bad? It’s all subjective.
I can eat this pizza tonight!” I know I have in the past! And I’m certain most of us have seen something like this: It’s no wonder many of us have a distorted relationship with food and with exercise! We are taught indirectly that exercising or working out are a punishment to eating! As a result, we are made to feel terrible, guilty, shamed for our food choices, even if this isn’t society’s intention. I know that these charts have well intentions in that they want to help you become aware of the kind of food that you are choosing to put in your body.
In addition, ask yourself why you exercise or move. Is it to punish yourself for eating those ”bad” foods, or to give yourself permission to eat, or to punish yourself from having body fat? Or do you exercise and move because you respect and love your body, you want to get more energy, you want to relieve stress? Perhaps you are somewhere in the middle of these responses. Whatever your reason to exercise, check in to see if it’s founded from a place of love and respect of your body. If it’s not, I encourage you to shift those reasons. Find activities that make you feel like you’re playing and having fun, rather than torturing yourself. Learn to de-link food associations with exercise. When you let go, you get to truly experience joy in movement and exercise! Need support shifting your beliefs when it comes to mind, food and body? Contact me and I would love to support you. - Rosalyn Fung M.Sc.
