DEBBIE BANCROFT

Cheers I to the New Year

t is around this time, as my January column reaches you, that you are acting on your New Year’s resolutions . . . or not. When I asked people back in December what their New Year’s resolutions would be, Tina Fey, who I thought would be my funniest commentator, had to think about it. “You know . . . I never make them,” she said, while rescuing her daughter, who had pulled her hat over her face and was careening into a table. Funny, no, but probably wise. Still, it is interesting to ask. Most of these quotes came from guests at Cinema Society’s screening of The Fighter. And no, I didn’t ask Mark Wahlberg. He hugged and kissed me when we met—and rendered me incapable of speech. But I recovered in time to ask some other people.

Below: From left, Amy Sacco, Russell Simmons, Katie Lee, Michelle Paige Paterson, Tiki Barber and Nicole Miller

Florence Henderson: I vow to keep dancing! And I will try not to say negative things about people.

Michelle Paige Paterson: I will resume my private life with a passion, and I’ll try to spend less.

Amy Sacco: I will clean my closet. I will not have any children.

Thom Filicia: I want to work less, but smarter. And I don’t want any more unnecessary drama.

Vincent ‘Big Pussy Bonpensiero’ Pastore: I will lose weight. I will not fall in love. Russell Simmons: Working with my ‘Peace Keepers’ mission. [Started in Houston, now in New York City, this organization protects inner city residents with street patrols.] Katie Lee: I will break a sweat every day. I won’t not cross things off my ‘to do’ list. 10 | AVENUE MAGAZINE · JANUARY 2011

Patricia Clarkson: I am going to try to keep believing in Obama. Tiki Barber: I want to take steps to newer heights. Kelsey Grammer: I will not repeat the things I’ve done before, and will live with more love. Nicole Miller: I will always put my

cell phone in the right slot in my bag. I will remember where my coat check is. And I’ll start Christmas shopping earlier. Rosanna Scotto: Lose weight, and live in the moment. Val Kilmer: Lose less, love more. Harvey Weinstein: Make good movies, not commercial ones. [Note: Weinstein’s The Fighter is great, not good, and will be a success in every sense.]

I hope your resolutions work, but if they don’t, you’re still wonderful. Happy New Year! !

ightlife is being reborn uptown. Sure, the Boom Boom Room, The Bunker (the latest it-spot) and Kenmare still attract hordes of hipsters and celebrities, but the Upper East Side is becoming a major disco destination. Heralding this return to the days when Park Avenue princesses partied at clubs like Au Bar, Le Club, Regine’s and the Surf Club is Lavo (which happens to occupy the old Au Bar space). So naturally, when AVENUE decided to throw a 35th anniversary blowout bash, we took over Lavo for dancing, drinks, food and lots and lots of friends—some who weren’t even born when the first issue of the magazine was printed. “I haven’t seen this space since it was my favorite club, Au Bar,” observes designer Liz Lange. “I was here every night with Jenny Stein. Her dad owned it. I think she has since changed her name to Taylor. Those days were so fun. And being at Lavo is bringing back so many memories.” Interior design master Mario Buatta is thrilled to have a new night spot nearby. “Lavo is a great re-do of Au Bar. Plus the finger food is very tasty,” he says, nibbling a little morsel. “I also think the uptown girls will like being in the nabe.” Tinsley Mortimer (who is writing her first novel) arrives with her constant companion, sister Dabney Mercer, and the socialite gets snapped like crazy by the photographers. Mortimer remembers the first time she saw her name in AVENUE—on the coveted Best-Dressed list. “I was so flattered to be included. In the picture, I was wearing a beautiful gold Oscar de la Renta tulle and sequined dress that I adored.” Mortimer has since appeared on two AVENUE covers. “Photographer Thomas Whiteside took some of my favorite pictures of me for AVENUE. My favorite one was with my bangs teased and swept back, my hair in a bouffant and I was wearing a Chanel skirt. It is now framed in my living room.” It’s a family affair and Nylon’s Style Director and Lia Sophia jewelry designer Dani Stahl brings her mother Joan Israel as her date. “Whenever I am in AVENUE, my mom tags the page and leaves it for me to see. She always gets the magazine first in her

We’re having a blast.” Stahl lives nearby and mentions that brunch at Lavo is a must-do. “It’s like you’ve been instantly transported to St. Tropez. The restaurant upstairs is so good.” Graziano de Boni, who was just named the Chief Executive Officer of Giorgio Armani Corporation, declares, “AVENUE is such a New York institution. It’s the inside track about New York, combined with great fashion and chic American style.” The music gets louder and more guests fill the room, like Natalie Leeds Leventhal, Nina Griscom, Liz Lind, actress/artist Meredith Ostrom, Bettina Zilkha, Carlos Souza and Anna

’ve never seen more billionaires in one room—except in Moscow. It was Richard LeFrak’s surprise birthday party, and they all came: David Koch, Michael Bloomberg (in red pants), Anne Hearst, Steven Rockefeller, Donald Trump, Wilbur Ross, Steven Schwarzman and some regular Joes like Woody Allen, Jay McInerney, Senators Frank Lautenberg and Charles Schumer, Gov. Jon Corzine, the gorgeous Arianna Boardman and others too rich and private to mention. Richard’s faithful sons, Harrison and Jamie, were the creative duo behind the disco-themed party (Bronson van Wyck made it happen), which featured both Earth Wind and Fire and Nile Rodgers, whose big hit was “Le Freak.” “That’s what I’m going to do when I get the bill,” quipped Richard, “freak out.” CeCe Black, Jean Shafiroff and Margo Langenberg chaired the French Heritage Society Gala at the Metropolitan Club (www.frenchheritagesociety.org). The group protects the French architectural legacy in the United States and France, and has helped fund more than 460 restoration projects. It also organizes social safaris to historic sites, including a highly anticipated 2012 excursion to the Château de Fontainebleau, which will mark the organization’s 30th anniversary. Among those dancing for culture were Diandra Douglas, Anne Rapp and Board Chair Elizabeth Stribling. When Oscar Wilde and Arthur Conan Doyle dined at The Langham Hotel in London with their publisher in 1889, they struck the deals that produced The Picture of Dorian Gray and the Sherlock Holmes series. Now, in its award-winning restaurant Roux and Artesian Bar, both smartly done up by interior designer David Collins, you will spot the Nobel Prize-winning author V.S. Naipaul, Madonna, Dame Julie Andrews, Colin Farrell, Sarah Jessica Parker and Amy Winehouse. The Langham London (www.langhamhotels.com) has just undergone a stunning $126-million-renovation and is the flagship of the group’s 21 five-star hotels. When they flung open its elegant doors in 1865, The Langham became Europe’s first grand hotel. Now, it stands alongside Claridges, the Ritz and the Savoy as one of London’s top hotels. I recommend Brian, the Langham’s savvy concierge, who can get you anything, including seats to War Horse (the town’s hottest play) and the Infinity Suite, yours for a mere $9,787 a night. Anderson Cooper is just one of the VIP supporters of AmeriCares (www.americares.org). Christina and Cary Potter hosted a party at the home of developer Alex Lari to introduce the organization’s C.E.O., Curtis Welling. He announced that over the last 28 years they have distributed more than $10 billion in medical aid to 147 countries, specifically for the current cholera outbreak in Haiti, the Gulf Coast oil spill, flooding in Pakistan and New Orleans and earthquakes in Chile. Leading the applause were Elizabeth Kabler, Dr. Robert Grant, Barbara de Portago, Merrill Lynch’s John Wessels, Dr. Michael Kraus, Mark Smith, Cindy Guyer, Royale Security C.E.O. Michael Wachs, Dr. Laura Torrado and “The Millionaire Matchmaker”’s P.J. Marks. !

ne could say that the legendary diamontaire GRAFF is of humble origins, but anyone familiar with its truly exquisite jewelry knows there’s simply nothing modest about this family company or its renowned creations. Yes, it all began with one man, Laurence Graff, who was once an apprentice with a jeweler in the Hatton Garden district of London. But by the time he was a mere 24 years old, Graff had already opened two stores, and would soon be traveling the world in search of inspiration and remarkable stones to support his blossoming business. Before too long, GRAFF achieved an international presence—and a reputation for creating pieces featuring the world’s most exceptional jewels. Soon GRAFF will celebrate the anniversary of its 10th year in America by (what would be more fitting?) expanding its presence in this country. “Next year, we’re going to open our first store in California,” explains Henri Barguirdjian, the company’s president and C.E.O. “We already have a popular store in Las Vegas, but we were in need of further representation out west. I’m so happy to finally achieve it in 2011.” The beautiful, 2,500square-foot space will occupy a freestanding building on Bow Street in San Francisco, and is designed by Peter Marino, the same renowned architect who worked on GRAFF’s New York flagship on Madison Avenue. A lot has happened in the 10 short years since that store has opened, both here in the States and beyond. “When we opened the Madison Avenue boutique, we took everybody a bit by surprise with the quality and size of the diamonds we offer our clientele,” says Barguirdjian. GRAFF’s access to the stunning and rare stones that have come to define its jewelry is thanks to the company’s total vertical integration, and the tremendous reach its supply end has developed over the past decade. GRAFF is a major shareholder in Gem Diamonds, one of the largest sightholders of De Beers and just

opened new offices in the diamond district in Tel Aviv. Meanwhile, back in New York, GRAFF has established so much more than a store and a loyal clientele. “Look at what Madison Avenue has become,” Barguirdjian says. “After we opened, everyone followed suit. We started a jewelry row. Now between 60th and 67th streets, there are so many important jewelers. It shows that the market is very much alive—and we are the leaders in that market.” This is quite an achievement given that when the store first opened its doors in 2000, everyone thought the high-end jewelry market was “dying,” as Barguirdjian puts it. “We demonstrated that’s not at all the case. There is a very, very strong demand for fine diamonds.” And GRAFF consistently meets that demand. “GRAFF trades thousands of carats every month,” Barguirdjian explains. “Many we sell wholesale to other jewelers and diamond dealers, but the cream of the crop— the best quality stones—come to us in London.” There, GRAFF boasts one of the largest workshops in the world. More than 120 skilled craftsman work with a team of brilliantly creative designers to produce the beautiful jewelry GRAFF is known for. “The stones never leave our hands,”

Barguirdjian adds, “from the moment they’re mined to the point the finished pieces reach our stores.” GRAFF stones are so exceptional that the world’s most celebrated museums and other cultural institutions have been known to display them. “We welcome the opportunity to show something of historical value to the

public,” says Barguirdjian. “We have a fabulous relationship with the Smithsonian Institution, where we exhibited the Wittelsbach-GRAFF Diamond from February of this year through September. The number of visitors it received was amazing. So we recreated that here in New York City, where the stone was displayed at the

American Museum of Natural History through December.” Since the Wittelsbach acquisition, GRAFF has made headlines for purchasing several other notable stones. In fact, at a Sotheby’s auction in Geneva, GRAFF recently bought a 24.78-carat Fancy Intense Pink Diamond for $46 million—the world’s most expensive diamond to date. And just last month, the jeweler acquired two very important rough diamonds discovered in the Letseng mine in Lesotho, weighing 196 and 184 carats each.“Each time something really rare and special comes on the market, we add it to our collection,” says Barguirdjian.“That’s what makes us so special: We offer things that nobody else can.” Indeed, after 10 years in this country and more than 40 since its founding in London, GRAFF has a lot to celebrate. “Laurence Graff would say that this is only the beginning and that we have a long way to go,” Barguirdjian posits with genuine—if unwarranted—humility. “But we are extremely proud of the level of quality we offer. We have the finest, most extraordinary collection, and that is a phenomenal achievement,” he says with a level of satisfaction much more appropriate for a diamontaire such as Graff. ✦

Happy New Year!

O

POSTCARD COURTESY OF THE NEW-YORK HISTORICAL SOCIETY

n Dec. 31, 1904, the newly christened Times Square hosted its very first New Year’s Eve fête with the help of Adolph Ochs and his paper, The New York Times. The just-opened 23-story Times Tower on 43rd Street held a roof party, and hundreds of thousands attended the light display outside One Times Square. Flash-forward to 1907 when, as this photo shows, the New Year’s Eve festivities featured a glowing ball descending from the Times Tower. A tradition that’s now outlasted the building, the ball-drop began with an immigrant named Jacob Starr, who constructed the device. The New-York Historical Society, whose library on Central Park West houses a collection of images documenting Times Square in decades past, welcomes the public to submit recent digital photos of the area to help build its contemporary holdings. Hannah! Meet the girl of the moment. With her beauty, pedigree and off-the-charts talent, Hannah Bronfman has stolen the spotlight. And P.S., she just graduated from college. Bronfman recently took a break from DJing, working on her clothing line and the restaurant and record label she co-owns to sit down with Peter Davis and talk about her whirlwind life. ew York is experiencing a major youthquake. All over the city, you can just feel the tremors of trendiness. And leading the young, new and exciting movement is Hannah Bronfman—the girl of 2011. Yet unlike the days when having a famous last name, a trusty trust fund and good looks were enough, today’s it-kids—girls like 23-year-old Bronfman—are poised and prepped to become minimoguls of all things cool. The daughter of Warner Music Group C.E.O. Edgar Bronfman Jr. and actress Sherry Brewer, Bronfman has started a record label, is launching a 100-percent sustainable, organic, eco-chic clothing line, is a talented sculptor and also a part owner of the hot spot, Hotel Griffou, where she also happens to DJ and host regular dinner parties. And Bronfman accomplished all of the above while still a student at Bard College. Not bad for a girl who got booted out of The Spence School in 6th grade. “My father was a big influence because he taught me about work ethic,” Bronfman explains, sounding more like a no-nonsense businesswoman than a trouble-making club kid. “He’s worked extremely hard to get where he is today, and that always showed. It was important for me to make my own money. With

my dad’s influence and my ambition, it was inevitable that I would try and get my foot in the door at a young age.” And now Bronfman has her feet (often in Fendi pumps) in quite a few fashionable doors—from music to fashion to nightlife. After graduating from Bard, Bronfman is planning to move to the Lower East Side with her boyfriend of more than two years, the rapper Asher Roth. The Bronfman kids’ hip factor doesn’t stop there: Older brother Ben is engaged to the rapper M.I.A., with whom he has a two-year-old baby boy named Ikhyd Edgar Bronfman. Ben schooled Hannah in music, introducing her to ska, punk, rock and hip-hop bands. “I grew up in a very musical house,” she says. “My brother has the largest spectrum of music that I have ever been exposed to. I still listen to a lot of it, and I’m grateful for learning about it so young.” Ben, who co-founded the carbon capture firm Global Thermostat (GT) and recently worked on Kanye West’s new album, says about his little sister, “Hannah is really amazing. I’m so proud to have her as a sister. She’s got great taste, she’s loyal and she understands what true artistic value is—whether it’s in the form of food, fashion, music or art. I don’t know what to say . . . she just gets it.” With her brother, Bronfman is involved in the fledgling record label Green Owl, which currently has seven bands on its roster. Extending his eco-activist work beyond GT, Ben Bronfman transformed an old school bus into a “green” tour bus for Green Owl’s bands: it runs on bio-diesel, a.k.a.

“I can see Green Owl clothing going into couture. It’s definitely going to go through stages. It’s about bringing awareness and saying, ‘Hey, being green is sexy.’”—Hannah Bronfman

vegetable oil. “We have these 100-pound slots for oil that we put on the bus,” she explains. “That way we don’t have to hit up a sushi restaurant for their vegetable oil. It breaks down every now and then, it’s not the most efficient, but it’s a start.” Bronfman admits that she and her brother haven’t made much money yet with the record label, so they’re launching a Green Owl clothing line in 2011. “We want to promote green awareness to a hip, young, sexy, new generation,” Bronfman explains. “We constructed a line of chic street wear after our band, The Very Best. They’re from South Africa, and their artwork is very Africana. We have elaborated on their artwork and put it into the clothing line. So that’s one way we’re keeping a connection between the record label and the clothing line.” Bronfman—who looks just as comfortable in her favorite Miu Miu heels and Marchesa dress as she does in vintage rocker tees, nerd glasses and cut off jeans—wants to expand the Green Owl label to encompass a complete lifestyle brand. “I can see Green Owl clothing going into couture,” she muses. “It’s definitely going to go through stages. It’s about bringing awareness and saying, ‘Hey, being green is sexy.’” When Bronfman was two, her parents divorced, but remained friends. She shuffled between her mother’s apartment on West 106th Street

and her father’s place on the Upper East Side. She attended Spence, where she says she was one of two black girls in her class. She mentions that all her friends went to Chapin. “I had a great education at Spence, but I didn’t have a single friend there,” Bronfman says. “Growing up in New York was really nice. My group of friends now is the same people that I knew when I was five years old. New York is such a great place to hang with friends. It’s just so easy.” She adds that the women in her family (herself plus a grandmother and an aunt) ended up leaving Spence. “I just think Spence is really different from other girls’ schools, and it’s a really difficult place to be understood,” Bronfman says. “I think the Bronfmans were a little too rebellious to be confined to the Spence walls—the red doors of Spence!” After leaving Spence, Bronfman attended Poly Prep in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, which was a whole other world. “It was so different, going to a co-ed school. It was really good preparation for college, being in a classroom with boys,” she says. “But in a lot of ways, it was also really difficult for me because I felt like I was subjected to more judgment. I remember being bullied by some of the football players. But it was also more laid back in Brooklyn. The kids weren’t as concerned with material things. Everyone was kind of just being a kid, which was really nice. I had a great experience at Poly and, in a lot of ways, if I had stayed at Spence, I wouldn’t have even known about Bard.” For college, Bronfman decided between Williams (“a little too preppy for me”), Skidmore (“just a little too jocky”) and

Bard, which she chose for its liberal attitude and focus on nurturing the creativity of artists. “I got to Bard and it was really weird,” she remembers with a laugh. “But I thought, better to find your friends in a group of weirdos than be unhappy somewhere else.” At Bard, Bronfman focused on sculpture, building large-scale installation pieces. “I am graduating with a B.A. in fine arts,” she says. “It’s been a really beautiful, weird experience at Bard, especially with my artwork. I really grew as a person. I had two significant relationships throughout my college years, and I learned a lot. My senior sculpture show is so in tune with my feelings and who I am as a person now.” Although she is more business savvy than most 23-year-olds, Bronfman is still young and out to have some fun. She DJs at clubs like Sway and The Jane Hotel, and stops by Hotel Griffou, where she is an investor, for dinner at least once a week. And even though she is billed as a DJ (a youthquake status symbol among the current crop of cool kids—think Alexa Chung and Alexandra and Theodora Richards), Bronfman says it’s more than just playing music. “I set the tone and mood of the party,” she explains. “I have a lot of friends and we throw a good party.” Friend Katie Schecter, for one, agrees. “For whatever reason, I find it hard to go out in New York and have an awesome time if Hannah’s not in town,” she says. “All of our friends think it feels like something is missing. Hannah could turn to me at 2 a.m., after

“My dad [Edgar Bronfman Jr.] has advised me a lot in terms of handling my money. He’s been super supportive . . . and is just happy that I’m out there and making a name for myself.” —Hannah Bronfman

many consecutive hours of television-watching, having had no prior plan of going out, and say, ‘Should we have a drink and a dance?’ and I am right off the couch. It’s like this twinkle in her eye, this amazing energy she gives off. You may not have thought so before, but now you know you’re going to have the best night ever.” Unlike the youthquakers before her—like Edie Sedgwick, who made headlines by dancing on tabletops and dyeing her hair Andy Warholsilver, or Paris Hilton, who made a sex tape and got sent to jail—Bronfman is much more than just a pretty party girl posing for photos with famous friends. She plans to live up to the success of her well-known family name. “My dad has advised me a lot in terms of handling my money,” she explains. “He’s been super supportive with Green Owl, my artwork and my DJing. He’s just happy that I’m out there and making a name for myself.” !

LIST THE MOST POWERFUL AND INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE IN PALM BEACH compiled by

AVENUE MAGAZINE introduction by RENÉE MORRISON

44 | AVENUE MAGAZINE · JANUARY 2011

eaching the ripe old age of 100 deserves a celebration—and no one knows how to do that better than the residents of Palm Beach. The island is planning its own special week to mark its anniversary this April, and the party is just getting started. In preparation, Worth Avenue has had a $15.8-million-facelift. It’s been widened to offer more parking for its shoppers’ Rolls and Bentleys. Marking the entrance to our historic district is a new clock tower, which references the dome of the nearby Everglades Club. Not to be outdone, Saks Fifth Avenue spent $250,000 for an 840-square-foot “vertical garden” on its west wall, facing Worth Avenue. This living work of art contains almost 11,000 plants and its own irrigation system. Palm Beach is not the only centenarian in town. Gertrude Maxwell, our oldest living Islander, shares the same birthday: April 17, 1911. In addition to having reached 100 years, she is also the founder of National Save a Pet, which rescued and cared for more than 1,450 cats and dogs in 2009. Ms. Maxwell plans to mark her birthday with a much quieter celebration than our fair Island will have. So many philanthropists, humanitarians and visionaries live in Palm Beach. The Honorable Nancy Brinker, the leader of the global breast cancer movement, has raised $1.5 billion to support research programs in our community as well as globally. She was recently awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, our nation’s highest civilian honor. Meanwhile, Bill Koch, who does so much for so many non-profits, is in the process of building a great new private school here. The island is a Mecca of culture, featuring so many events, lectures and seminars. Dale Coudert’s The Coudert Institute offers programs “to stir the mind and spirit,” while Parker Ladd has brought us his Author Breakfast Series. At the Kravis Center, the Forum Club of the Palm Beaches holds non-partisan political and public affairs programs open to people of all political persuasions. And then there’s The Norton Museum’s must-see collection and superb exhibitions. The Society of the Four Arts is celebrating its own 75th anniversary. On Jan. 29, it will open “A Return to Palm Beach: Jewels from Marjorie Merriweather Post Collection.” Ms. Post was, of course, Palm Beach’s most famous grande dame. G-Star School of the Arts, our unique charter high school of “artademics,” was founded and is now headed by Greg Hauptner. G-Star has its own 14,000-square-foot sound stage, the largest in Florida and equivalent to the one where The Incredible Hulk was shot. Because the stage is fully booked for the next seven years, Mr. Hauptner is building two more sound stages for the school, the only one of its kind. G-star students who maintain a 3.0 grade point average are allowed to work—albeit unpaid—on the movies being made there. Palm Beach native John Textor is planning to use G-Star as a feeder school for his proposed venture with Florida State University’s College of Motion Picture Arts, offering a degree in the business of filmmaking. Come New Year’s, we’ll be ringing in 2011 with the oldest and most celebrated party, the Coconuts, at our beloved Flagler Museum. It has been the island’s most treasured affair since the 1930s. In 2009, David Koch, our richest coconut and known for his love of fireworks, brought in the Grucci Family to display their sparkling art across our tropical skies. Similarly bright is the Hope diamond, another Smithsonian treasure that once upon a time was a priceless possession of one of our more illustrious dowagers, Brownie MacClain. Even the swell and older crowd that annually dances the night away at Dan Ponton’s Club Colette will dash from their coveted seats to see the dazzling light show that crowns our beautiful island. If you are fortunate enough to attend one of our many parties during the season, all of them benefiting charity, listen to the divine music of Bob Lappin’s orchestra. As both our year-round residents and our “snow birds” raise millions of dollars, think of the many blessings—both small and great—that this past year has brought us. And so to all our beloved AVENUE readers, we would like to wish you a new year full of blessings both great and small and peace and joy.

Arabian Nights Peggy Siegal discovers the Doha Film Festival

50 | AVENUE MAGAZINE · JANUARY 2011

WEDNESDAY, OCT. 27 Arriving at the ubiquitous Four Seasons Hotel at night, I have no sense of being in a Muslim country. The only giveaway is the clothing. Men wear long white shirt dresses with flowing head dresses. The women are completely covered in black.

Approaching the Qatar Cultural Village for the premiere of Casino Jack, I see miles of enormous black-and-white portraits of filmmakers by Brigitte Lacombe. The endless, brightly lit billboards popping out of the dunes are reminiscent of a Christo installation. Jury member Salma Hayek is on the red carpet as Kevin Spacey explains his black comedy, in which he portrays despicable G.O.P. lobbyist Jack Abramoff. The Arabs love the Americans’ ability to laugh at themselves. THURSDAY, OCT. 28 Doha Film Institute founder H.E. Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani attends a filmmaker’s breakfast. She is charming, modest and dresses in black. She is a legend in Tribeca. Her stunning mother, Her Highness Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned is the Jackie O. of the Middle East. Her father, the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, runs the state of Qatar. The parents are presently visiting the Queen of England. The local media follow their every move. Tribeca Enterprises’ Craig Hatkoff and Geoffrey Gilmore and DFI Executive Director Australian Amanda Palmer welcome the crowd. The festival’s ambitious screening program has 51 features from 36 countries. Films being shown include: Made in Dagenham, Paranormal Activity 2, Tamara Drewe and documentaries Waiting for Superman and The Two Escobars. The back story is that in 2005, Mayassa graduated Duke University. Through an introduction to Bob De Niro, she landed an internship in Jane Rosenthal’s office. Eventually Bob and Jane found out her parents preside over a small country. Who knew?

I

head to the second annual Doha Tribeca Film Festival. Having negotiated the Cannes, Venice, Toronto and Hamptons festivals, which were a snap to get to, I arrive at JFK for a 12-hour flight to Qatar’s capital, Doha, a short boat ride from Iran. Iran? Am I crazy? At the airport, I am inconspicuously rolled into Qatar Airways VIP lounge in a wheelchair. Having survived two hip resurfacings allows me fast transport through security. I am filled with the guilty pleasure of sneaking halfway around the world for a cultural lark while my office is slaving away on every Oscar campaign. To my horror, in walks Harvey Weinstein with his 15-year-old daughter, Lily. He spots me. “What is Peggy Siegal doing here?” he inquires into his cell phone. “She should be promoting The King’s Speech, Blue Valentine and The Company Men!” Oh my God. Caught. I babble, “Harvey, it’s a free trip and I am writing about Miral,” another Weinstein film premiering in Doha. Tiny Qatar—the size of Connecticut and Rhode Island, a former pearl-fishing center and Mecca for camel caravans—is now one of the richest countries in the world thanks to having the third largest reserve of natural gas, after Russia and Iran. In the past eight years, vast construction has resulted in an instant modern city of only 15 percent Qataris and the rest foreigners. Build it and they will come.

Mayassa, following in her mother’s footsteps as chairperson of the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community development, had a vision of bringing a film festival to Doha. Over the next months, Bob, Jane and their Tribeca team taught Mayassa about how their film festival operates. Fast forward to 2008 when Mayassa invited Bob and Jane to the opening of the Museum of Islamic Art and to meet her folks. The next day they gave a press conference announcing their creation of the Doha Tribeca Film Festival. Great story. Miral premieres tonight. Director Julian Schnabel, his exotic Palestinian girlfriend Rula Jebreal (whose story the film loosely follows), Rula’s look alike star Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire), Yasmine Al Massri, producer Jon Kilik, Harvey Weinstein, Mira Nair and Amanda Palmer dressed as the movie star of her own fantasy film decorate the red carpet. Julian introduces his movie, explaining that the story is about four women whose lives intertwine in the search for justice, hope and reconciliation in a world overshadowed by rage and war. His intention is to bring peace and understanding to the Mid-East. FRIDAY, OCT. 29 Settling into the rhythms of Doha, I finally read the festival information packet left in my room. They have thought of everything. I miss by a day free massages, manicures, facials, make-up and rapid reflexology at the spa. I miss by two hours exciting complimentary excursions: a desert safari of dune bashing and a camel ride (did that in Egypt), a Dhow Cruise (with my luck, I’d drift towards pirates in Iran and end up a Jewess in distress), Doha at a glance in a bus (a what?) to The Pearl, a man-made island for a missed shoportunity (for a what?) and a Souq for a few Arab Falcons. On Friday night, Disney’s Secretariat premieres. It is the end of “Family Day” and the audience is stoned on sugar. Wild children race up and down the aisles to the beat of pounding horse hoofs. Sitting behind director

Randall Wallace, I proceed to grab Arab brats by the collar and drag them back to their oblivious parents. Eventually the kids settle into their mummy’s laps and fall asleep as the adults come alive, cheering for the world’s most famous thoroughbred, who they know will win. Back at the Four Seasons, Jane Rosenthal and an entourage comes into the lobby bar for a nightcap. She has just had dinner with Her Highness Sheikha Mozah, the Emir Sheikh Hamad, Mayassa, Bob De Niro, Craig Hatkoff and Patty Newburger at one of the Sheikh’s many gigantic, glittering, palatial homes to discuss the future of their cross-cultural endeavors. Arthur Sulzberger Jr. with his very tall Swiss girlfriend and financial analyst and Times editor Andy Rosenthal were also at dinner, having just arrived that day from Israel. Now, six ambitious Americans and one Swiss all in funereal garb unwind, kibbitz and drink till 3 a.m. SATURDAY, OCT. 30 Arthur and Andy “sing the praises” (as reported in a Gulf Times photo caption) of the work of Al Jazeera, the dominant world-wide Arabic T.V. news station, on a visit to their headquarters in Doha. The closing night film, The First Grader, wins the Audience Award. It tells the inspirational true story about an octogenarian and former Mau Mau rebel who enrolls in a local Kenyan school to learn to read. In a world of cultural diplomacy, one is reminded that the Tribeca Film Festival was established to rejuvenate lower Manhattan after the September 11th, 2001, attacks, which destroyed the World Trade Center. Tribeca has become a showcase for films with a political edge. Doha aims to do the same. Qatar’s cross-cultural efforts are noble considering they are situated in a strategically sensitive political area. In addition to film festivals, they are now hosting the 2022 World Cup soccer tournament. Qatar is ready for its close-up. ✦

Money Talks AVENUE’s panel of top financial executives discusses the state of the economic recovery, how to take the emotion out of investing and where the smart money is going

ANN LIMBERG: We feel it is a recovery. In March, a real pickup began and we’ve been pretty bullish about what’s been going on. The Bears have had a very big voice and I don’t think the economy is getting credit for a lot of positive fundamentals. ADAM GREEN: It seems that the recovery is real, but we have no illusions about where it comes from. It is driven by global, coordinated expansive policies by central banks. And that may well build momentum and virtuous cycles, but at the cost of unprecedented liquidity and public debt. So that leads to a great deal of uncertainty and real risks. In light of that it’s important to be careful about risk management. The second major theme is the jaw-dropping rate of growth of the middle class in emerging market countries, primarily China and India. That gives rise to investment opportunities, but they have to be evaluated carefully. TONY GUERNSEY: Eleven years ago there were eight funds that invested in emerging markets. 54 | AVENUE MAGAZINE · JANUARY 2011

They had $380 million invested. Today, there are 288 funds with $365 billion invested. AVENUE: Nice homework. So, we’ve had another round of Fed pumping up of the economy. How do we transition from the public-led to the private-led economy? RICHARD HOUGH: Unemployment is what feels bad. And the off-the-charts productivity numbers of a few years ago, just before the crisis, have yet to translate into GDP growth. And they should. Productivity is the requirement for future growth. We’re seeing real incomes recovered and rising. The consumer is coming back as a result of that. I think the double-dip recession everyone was worried about is off the table. It’s a matter of making everyone feel better. The key issue to solve is political uncertainty. We need assurances on U.S. fiscal policy, which will really help to restabilize the economic environment and allow investment to come back in, thereby driving future growth. I’m pretty optimistic. I think there will be moderate growth. The stock market tends to be something of a leading indicator. As a result, we could see very good stock market returns in a shorter time period before we see full economic recovery as evidenced by GDP.

DORIS MEISTER: We have not had the kind of growth rate that is typical coming out of a recession, and this was one of the worst recessions ever. So the recovery has been muted and in those countries that had significant debt we expect slow to moderate growth. AVENUE: Are a lot of your clients still in cash and watching and waiting? What are you telling them? AG: You can hold too much cash. With a cash-heavy portfolio, inflation and taxes slowly erode your wealth. And you might miss opportunities as markets improve. To address this, we start by helping you determine your day-to-day cash needs, and then develop a plan for the balance. Such a plan might involve short-term municipals, high dividend stocks and phasing into a broadly diversified portfolio. Sometimes a reluctance to invest may reflect fears or inertia rather than a dearth of opportunities. JENNIFER LEE: Adam is right. One of the hardest things with clients is the emotional nature of investing. We’ve been counseling our

clients—and our professionals—about being steadily invested and rebalancing consistently. But the hardest thing to do is to rebalance one’s portfolio when it is needed. So we have clients who are sitting on cash and on largely fixed incomes who are about where they were in 2007 when they were overweight in equities. Inevitably, individual investors are over-invested in the wrong places at the wrong time. TG: Looking at the angst meter of our investors right now, the angst is much higher about losses than about missing chances to make gains. So we end up just striving for capital preservation, which we hate because, well, it is passive. AL: There is a new normal. Sitting on cash on the sidelines right now is leaving so much opportunity on the table. We definitely think it is the right time. It is all about diversification and balance. A successful investor today has to think more like a business owner than like a trader. So an individual looking at their equity portfolio has to look at what they are holding and ask, “Are the fundamentals sound? Is there positive operating leverage? Is there appropriate use of debt? Are they doing

business in economies that are emerging in terms of a movement to consumerism?” The key is not necessarily just broad brush strokes around asset classes, but making choices within asset classes.

the time of the crisis that diversification was dead because people lost so much money. I don’t think it is dead at all. Those who stuck to their asset allocations did comparatively well. JL: If they rebalanced.

DM: Some anxious clients are generally overly invested in fixed income and cash, and are missing some of the investment opportunities that have come up in recent months. Investors need a balanced and diversified long-term allocation and at the same time—because of all the market volatility, they need to be nimble enough to seize short-term opportunities as they come up. AVENUE: A year and a half ago, panelists at our roundtable were talking about the need for new models of asset allocation in the wake of Lehman and Madoff. Are the fundamentals still correct as they apply to asset allocation? DM: We believe firmly in diversification. The question is how many asset classes do you include in your portfolio. RH: Absolutely. In fact there was a lot of talk at

RH: Yes, rebalancing is part of the theory. The problem is people who started to try to time it and did a lot of shifting. No one said that good asset allocation practices or modern portfolio theory were going to work in very short time periods during a crisis. It’s meant to work through the whole cycle. There’s no doubt that those who had a proper allocation not only lost less money than others, but recovered far better on the other side. AL: With all the financial media and the press these days, everything is accessible 24-7 to people of every degree of financial sophistication. While clients talk about being long-term investors, what they really love is market timing, which is hard to resist when they are watching what’s happening in the market hour to hour. The hardest thing is not necessarily rebalancing, it's trying not to get distracted by sound bites and keeping the right perspective.

financial roundtable

AL: So much of what is important today goes back to common sense. Any asset or asset class in totality and isolation has pros and cons. It is all about the combination and appropriateness for the client. But it absolutely has to start with the client.

AVENUE: Structured products were supposed to provide an ironclad bottom to the horrors that took place over the latter end of 2008 and ’09. What are some of the lessons learned?

AVENUE: What is the place of commodities in a balanced portfolio these days?

AG: Derivatives can be misused—some of the bad press is warranted—yet derivatives are useful in many ways for wealthy individuals. They enable you to express a market view. Suppose you expect modest equity appreciation over a six-month time period, then you’d prefer an investment that gives you two times that appreciation subject to a maximum. Another use is to help you deploy cash when you should do so. So, for JP Morgan private banking clients, when the S&P fell into the 700s, we predicted we were near the bottom. Maybe not at the bottom, but near the bottom. We proposed an investment that provided some buffer to the downside, but gave equity exposure on the upside. This served our clients very well. So, if used in the proper way and with a good understanding of the risks and the fees, they’re powerful tools. TG: I don’t think 95 percent of people understand what they are buying with these products. Some structured products can be very useful, but the need for education is phenomenal. DM: Structured products play a role in investors’ portfolios, but advisors should be transparent about the fees and what the investors are buying. 56 | AVENUE MAGAZINE · JANUARY 2011

JL: Investors tend to think of commodities as oil and gold, when the reality is people get commodities across the board. One has to be diversified in order to take full advantage of that story. DM: Commodities are not an area where you want to be buy and hold. You need to be nimble because the way to make returns in commodities is by being more opportunistic. We also look at investors’ underlying commodities exposure in their equity portfolios. One area we haven’t talked about so far is private equity. The best returns tend to be vintage years, like now, when the economy is weak, followed by a big recovery period. AG: A trick of private equity is to diversify your vintages. One way that institutions and individuals alike got hurt was by piling on in 2006, whereas those who had investments in prior years, despite suffering losses in 2006, did well overall. AVENUE: Where, internationally, would you put your money? RH: Probably Europe. The emerging markets have been a great story, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the asset class right now is a good buy or is cheap. So I would weight towards more mature markets.

TG: Brazil, for so many reasons.: agricultural output, Olympics and World Cup, entrepreneurial spirit. AG: Emerging markets; a combination of equities and fixed income with currency exposure. The consumption by the growing middle classes is one of the more predictable trends. AVENUE: Please go out on a limb for our readers and tell us where you’d put your money next year. RH: U.S. equity. We still think it’s the cheapest asset class in the world. We think there’s a lot of room around valuations. They’re still reasonable. Rates are low. Fixed income in the U.S. seems overblown. There’s so much money sitting in fixed income and cash. It has to leave. It has to seek higher returns. TG: I’m going with technology. AG: Emerging markets diversified across currencies, debt and equity. JL: U.S. equities with a tilt toward growth, and we have an overweight on technology because there hasn’t been a meaningful technology spend since Y2K. AL: U.S. equities dividend growth payers; multinational exposure. DM: U.S. equities with a bias towards exports, companies that benefit from exports and business investment, including technology. Investors should also look more closely at emerging markets. AVENUE: Thank you all very much. !

ANDREW SCHWARTZ

AG: Because of that propensity to panic and the possibility of needing the liquidity, it’s important to construct your portfolio with an amount of risk you’re comfortable with. Your tools include diversification and rebalancing, but also alternatives and structured investments.

A Few Truths about the Decade Ahead Navigating new worlds with old maps doesn’t work. Yet that’s what many investors today are doing. Their investment plans fail to recognize that the financial world has fundamentally changed, resulting in a new set of realities that will endure for many years to come. Growth Will Slow Down, Changes Will Accelerate At the heart of these new challenges is the changing nature of economic growth. No longer fueled by debt and unbridled spending, growth will be more heavily influenced by factors such as demand-driven exports and increasingly unpredictable consumer behavior. Consequently, it will be slower, more sporadic and less predictable. Translation? More difficult than ever to attain. Variable policy changes and economic headwinds will only make matters worse. The cost of health care alone will place a significant burden on the U.S. economy. And who can forecast how the economic climate will change as financial reform takes hold and stimulus policies unwind? Furthermore, federal and state deficits are making higher taxes an unfortunate — and unknowable — reality. For example, tax rates on ordinary income are set to increase after 2010, but Congress could act to alter the specifics. Add the possibilities of inflation and costlier living and our challenging future becomes even more complicated. “Turbulent” is the New “Calm” If you’re waiting for the volatility of the investment world to “return to normal,” you may have a long wait. Volatility is the new normal. Market reactions today are faster, more intense and sometimes contradictory. A glance back at the market’s recent roller coaster ride exemplifies what’s ahead. Can your stomach handle more ups and downs? More importantly, can your portfolio strategy? Hopefully, the answer is yes. Because asset classes and global markets are no longer performing according to historical norms. This was startlingly clear during the financial crisis of 2008-2009, when the basis of modern portfolio theory — that asset classes tend to act independently — was painfully refuted as most assets collapsed together.

has become mandatory. One where goals are clearly defined and communicated — without jargon — to ensure that investors stay on track, even as the course twists and turns. Many Plans are Past Their Expiration Date Although so much has changed, most plans haven’t. Many plans are not only obsolete, but are also incapable of meeting investors’ most basic and important goals. To quickly anticipate and leverage the opportunities of the coming decade, investment plans must combine innovation and discipline in new ways. They must also consider all aspects of an individual’s wealth — tax and estate planning, liability planning, etc. — while remaining dynamic, constantly readjusting as the facts change. At BNY Mellon, we create plans that do both. Through true client partnerships. The question is: Is Your Plan Ready for What’s Ahead? We are happy to help you find out. art and jewelry with the long-established Antiques & Art at the Armory Show, taking place March 9-13. This extraordinary event will present a multitude of world-class dealers, offering something for every interest. A more extensive preview and full show information—including our Exclusive Opening Night Benefit for the New York School of Interior Design, our Royal Oak Lecture series and discussions with leading designers—can be found at www.avenueshows.com. As the first show of the spring New York Show season and the first major social event on the calendar, ANTIQUES & Art at the Armory is sure to be the talk of the town.

hollis reh & shariff john jaffa antiques Cigarette case by Fabergé, workmaster August Hollming. Circa 1899. Width: 3 1/8 inches, height: 1 7/8 inches, depth: 1/2 inch. “Look around today wherever fine work of the goldsmith is displayed and you will almost invariably find the notice ‘by Fabergé.’ Nothing can tell more eloquently of the man and his work than the compelling attention that his creations still demand.” —John Jaffa of John Jaffa Antiques

Van Clef & Arpels diamond and platinum flower brooch with a single large roundcut stone cradled by baguettes and surrounded by sparkling, gem-studded leaves. New York, 1950s. “A rare and highly desirable signed piece that exemplifies classic 1950s Van Cleef & Arpels design” —Hollis Reh of Hollis Reh & Shariff

Signed “L.C. Tiffany - Favrile 682J.” “A great example of color, form and technique makes this vase by Louis Comfort Tiffany an extremely rare and highly soughtafter object by collectors.” —Edo Ophir of Ophir Gallery

gavin spanierman ltd. Theodore Earl Butler’s (1861-1936) Sweet Peas, Butler’s Garden, Giverny. Oil on canvas, 32 inches by 32 inches. “Although one of America’s most innovative post-impressionist painters, Theodore Earl Butler did not receive the recognition he deserved in his lifetime, perhaps eclipsed by his famous father-in-law, Claude Monet. Inspired by him, Butler discovered Giverny, where he developed his own technique and style. Sweet Peas is a prime example of Butler’s advancement of Monet’s technique.” —Gavin Spanierman of Gavin Spanierman Ltd.

The real estate expert shares his wisdom on . . . technologies and privacy

E

very client and customer relationship with a residential real estate agent should be trusted and private. The agent’s commitment to confidentiality and discretion must be absolute. As guardians of their clients’ interests, agents should consider their responsibilities and their ethical standards to be the equivalent of those of a private banker. Advances in technology, however, make this aspect of the job difficult in new ways. Is it possible to strike a balance between the individual’s desire for privacy and the public’s right to know? In New York City and elsewhere, residential sales of cooperatives, condominiums and townhouses are a matter of public record, and many websites popularly provide basic information about a transaction—including buyer, seller, address and price—within days of a closing. An experienced, professional agent will shepherd buyers and sellers through the complex sales process so that transactions proceed as discreetly as possible. But in an age of transparency, the larger questions of over-sharing and of technologies, which must be properly governed in the public’s best interest, need to continue to receive our close attention. !

avenue’s LEGAL ELITE INSIDE THE WORLD OF TRUSTS AND ESTATES LAW

T

his month, AVENUE teamed up with LexisNexis Martindale-Hubbell once again, this time to present readers with a list of the city’s top trusts and estates attorneys. Those who made the cut have all received an AV Preeminent Rating™—the highest Peer Review Rating™ available. Whether selecting a firm to meet your personal legal needs or seeking to validate credentials, our list provides the information you’ll need to obtain the best representation out there.

AVENUE’S LEGAL ELITE

ROBERT J. MAUCERI Counselor at Law AVENUE asked eminent Trusts and Estates attorney Robert Mauceri what makes someone in his position successful and what distinguishes him from the competition. A good Trusts and Estates attorney is able to develop an estate plan that not only makes practical sense for a client’s family, but also minimizes transfer taxes and shelters assets from creditor risks for several generations. He or she must also have the skills to handle any and all matters pertaining to planning an estate and executing the plan. By that I mean having the technical knowledge of the law and the skill to devise and draft complicated trusts and other documents necessary to successfully implement the plan. My skill level comes from 40 years of practice both as an attorney in the Office of the Chief Counsel of the IRS, which has imparted invaluable experience in tax matters that are litigation-sensitive, and as a private practitioner with decades of experience drafting complicated trusts and contracts. Also, since my practice experience covers areas such as income taxation of individuals and corporations, ERISA planning, mergers and acquisitions, partnership arrangements and charitable gift planning, I have the ability to appreciate and evaluate and give advice regarding all the aspects of a client’s tax, financial and family situation.

ROBERT J. MAUCERI, J.D., LL.M. 212.979.1738 r.mauceri@nysbar.com 60 W. 13th Street, 5-B New York, N.Y. 10011

Someone in this field must also be able to anticipate and help clients avoid potentially costly problem areas. For example, clients need to protect their assets from risks that cannot otherwise be insured against with traditional insurance. In addition to tax planning, asset protection planning has come of age and is a vital component to a wealth preservation plan. I have been providing asset protection services since 1999 when domestic asset protection planning first became available. Above all, a Trusts and Estates attorney must be attentive, supportive, sympathetic and responsive to clients’ needs. Having developed a network of attorneys, CPAs and financial advisors who can handle virtually every legal or financial issue that a client may have, I bring added value to clients as well as provide continuity for clients and their families for years to come. —Robert Mauceri

MICHAEL N. CONNORS

Born and raised in New York City, Michael N. Connors graduated from Pace University and soon after served in the United States Army with the Military Police in Germany. After an honorable discharge, Connors enrolled in Brooklyn Law School and, in 1981, started his private practice in Brooklyn. Five years later, Connors, with Florence Sullivan, the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in 1982, formed Connors & Sullivan PC, a mid-size firm that deals almost exclusively with Trusts and Estates, emphasizing Estate Planning, Estate Administration and the related taxes. “We are small enough to know you as a person, but large enough to have attorneys and staff that can give you experienced advice,” says Connors of his firm. For him, the key to a top lawyer, like those at Connors & Sullivan, is the ability to foresee all possible scenarios and develop a plan for all contingencies. “As lawyers, we have to be flexible in our planning to prepare for the best and worst case scenarios,” Connors explains. Connors spends much of his time educating the community on estate planning through regular seminars focusing on asset protection and taxation. For more than 20 years, he has been explaining the importance of estate planning and wills. Connors served on the New York State Governor’s Advisory Committee for the Aging for more than 15 years. He currently serves on the New York State Ethics Commission Public Advisory Council. He is the National Judge Advocate General for the Catholic War Veterans and serves as a director for the Civil War Round Table of New York. “One of my proudest moments was freeing two sisters in their eighties from a nursing home where they were held against their will,” Connors recalls. Another recent success for Connors & Sullivan was the transfer of a $30-million-property through an estate by a combination of discounts that resulted in paying an estate tax on only one-third the value of the property. After 30 years of experience, Connors still loves his job. “Meeting with clients and becoming acquainted with them and their families, knowing their history and hearing their stories, is the most rewarding aspect of my work,” he says. “Getting to know the client as a person, not a file, is extremely satisfying.”

Now that the estate tax debate in Congress is over (for now), there is no better time for individuals and families to take action and optimize their estate plans. As we embark on a new year, we must resolve to capitalize on estate planning strategies that will not only spur asset growth for our heirs, but also ensure that a legacy of values continues for our loved ones. Without proper planning, many risks arise when wealth is passed from generation to generation. Inheritances are vulnerable to attack from unintended beneficiaries, children’s spouses and law suits. Younger beneficiaries who receive substantial sums of money may lose their motivation to pursue an education, begin their careers and become self-sufficient, independent adults. In other unfortunate circumstances, beneficiaries may put assets to inappropriate uses, such as gambling, drugs, alcohol or other excesses. What can you do to prevent this? Leaving an inheritance in trust for loved ones can alleviate these concerns. When employed properly, trusts protect the assets from reversals that beneficiaries may encounter, while encouraging them to make their own way and to create their own estate. Worthy family members and friends, or favored institutions, may be appointed as Trustee or co-Trustee to make distributions for a beneficiary’s typical needs, such as health care, education and support. With the resources of the trust, the Trustee can encourage positive behavior and guide the beneficiary to a rich, full and productive life. In families where young children will inherit, a sophisticated estate plan will also create a comprehensive lifestyle path

for these children. Many parents identify key family members and friends to counsel the guardians regarding important decisions. As the children mature, an emphasis might be placed upon enrolling in the most appropriate schools and providing the best developmental environment to ensure a fruitful life. Other noteworthy directions often include requests for the children’s medical treatment, their spiritual upbringing, visitation to important family members, such as grandparents, and the appointment of temporary custodians until non-local guardians are able to serve. Finally, a well-designed estate plan will nimbly respond to legislative changes that occur. The Federal estate tax law is only effective for the next two years and President Obama promises that, with this tax relief, he intends to close tax “loopholes.” Today, there are many effective estate planning strategies that permanently avoid estate tax, but may be in danger of extinction with the termination of these “loopholes.” Further, State estate tax is alive and well at rates in excess of 10 percent. During this “Great Recession,” we have witnessed the largest budget deficit since World War II. Ultimately, the mounting national debt must be addressed and a likely result could be (i) a return to a more confiscatory estate tax and (ii) an elimination of certain techniques that reduce the payment of estate tax. Affluent families were subjected to Estate Tax Rates of 70 percent or greater at the top bracket for more than 50 years. Additionally, as recently as 2001, the effective Estate Tax rate was 55 percent with an estate tax credit of only $675,000. Expert guidance is essential to identifying strategies that will accomplish tax-efficient transfer of assets to the

next generation in the most complete, protected and holistic manner possible. This new year ushers in new opportunities. We welcome the privilege to protect the legacy of wealth and wisdom that you pass to your loved ones. John McManus founded McManus & Associates in 1991, and is celebrating 20 years representing the affluent community of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut with sophisticated trust and estate planning. McManus is honored with Martindale Hubbell's highest rating and is named to their Bar Register for Preeminent Lawyers for 2011.

Congratulations to our Partner Lee A. Snow Named one of Avenue’s Legal Elite

After attorney Martin Shenkman’s wife was diagnosed with MS, he discovered there was little on the subject of estate and financial planning for people living with chronic illnesses. With his knowledge of estate planning, he published several articles on the topic and, later, a book. But too few of the 120 million Americans living with chronic illnesses are getting the planning guidance they need to deal with their estate planning and their finances in light of their illnesses. He decided to launch a national charitable initiative: RV4TheCause. Traveling the country in his Airstream RV, he educates professional advisors (attorneys, accountants, insurance consultants, etc.) on ways they can better advise clients whose families are affected by chronic illnesses. He also educates planned giving and major gift officers of chronic illness organizations on how to use charitable giving techniques to raise more funds for their causes, and empowers those living with chronic illness and their loved ones to better plan their estates and finances. NAPFA, AICPA – PFP, NAEPC and other organizations support the goals of RV4TheCause and help sponsor programs for professionals. He (indirectly) helps raise money for 3 charities (The Michael J. Fox Foundation, National Multiple Sclerosis Society and Association of Hole in the Wall Camps) and welcomes the involvement of other charities serving people living with chronic illness.

Q&A

AVENUE’s back-page column asks New York notables our version of the questionnaire made famous by Marcel Proust

WHAT HOUSE IN PALM BEACH HAVE YOU ALWAYS COVETED?

I’ve always thought that the old C.Z. Guest estate has a certain je ne sais quoi. WHEN DID YOU FIRST START COMING TO PALM BEACH? WHAT BROUGHT YOU THERE?

Simon [Doonan] and I went to PB for a mini vacay in 2002, and Steven Stolman told us that we had to buy an apartment in his building. We are very suggestible so we just obeyed him. It didn’t hurt that the apartment had a powder room covered in turquoise snakeskin. IN PALM BEACH OR NEW YORK, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE WATERING HOLE FOR LUNCH? FOR DINNER?

In PB, I love to hit the Four Seasons for lunch and dinner at Chez Jean Pierre. I love sitting in the bar room, watching the fashion parade. In New York City, I go to Giorgione for lunch everyday, and I’m no stranger to carb loading at Il Cantinori. WHAT NEWSPAPER COLUMN DO YOU READ FIRST IN THE MORNING? 100 | AVENUE MAGAZINE · JANUARY 2011

The Times and Simon reads The Post, then we switch. If I don’t read them both cover to cover, I go insane. It’s a compulsion. WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE NEW YORKER, PAST OR PRESENT?

The answer to the next few questions is my bloke, Simon. He is the smartest, funniest, best person ever. But, I don’t want to bore, so I’ll list my other faves . . . Fave New Yorker: my mom! She’s hilarious and fun. I’m a proud mama’s boy.

Jonathan Adler, potter and designer

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE NEW YORK CLICHÉ? LEAST FAVORITE?

Favorite: New Yorkers are always on the go. Least favorite: New Yorkers are rude. We’re a polite bunch, if I do say so myself. WHAT PART OF THE NEW YORK LIFESTYLE CAN’T YOU LIVE WITHOUT?

The senseless schadenfreude that exists in our very competitive working world.

WHO IS THE SMARTEST NEW YORKER YOU KNOW?

WHAT’S THE ONE THING ABOUT NEW YORK YOU WOULD CHANGE?

My 6-year-old nephew, Harry, seems to have figured out how to live a carefree life so I think that makes him pretty smart.

There should be more open spaces with gorgeous flowers growing.

WHO IS THE FUNNIEST?

Liz Lange—she’s unimaginably naughty and irreverent and hilarious.

Seeing an old broad in a Bentley gently crash into a parked car in the Publix parking lot.

WHO IS YOU FAVORITE PALM BEACH RESIDENT?

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GROW UP?

I adore my design pal, Celerie Kemble, and her coterie of gorgeous gal pals.

America’s most famous potter, of course! !

WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE PALM BEACH MOMENT?
