They hosted a screening of Man on a Ledge at the Tribeca Grand Hotel followed by a Grey Goosefueled party at the newly opened hotspot Acme with guests Sam Worthington, Worthington Kyra Sedgwick, Kevin Bacon, Debbie Harry and Hilary Rhoda Rhoda.. The always-stylish socialite and arts-scene icon was known for her zest for life, dancing at clubs into the wee hours, and her charitable works. Supporting African villages by purchasing their local clothes to create her wardrobe, she also spent time campaigning against female circumcision in remote areas of Africa.

During her last moments she was seen posing for photographers at Lincoln Center, smiling as she showed of her red, Africanprint outfit and oversized glasses, soaking it all in for what would be the final time. She went out like she lived, in the glimmer of the spotlight and forever in fashion.

Winter Renaissance

I

n an interesting twist, I had a call from a friend in Palm Beach, last week. “I’m looking at the sun dappled ocean and sipping a Mai Tai, poolside. What are you doing?” she somewhat smugly, inquired. “Well actually, I’ve got to hop over to The Temple of Dendur, after I salute my pal’s new book, and have to forage through my spring closet as it’s 60 degrees here!”

I equally smugly responded. Recitals, screenings, new books and shows, and all of that in our spring-like, vital, vibrant mecca . . . hold the Mai Tai, sister.

Starting this ‘Winter Renaissance,’ was a petit concert by the ‘poet of the violin,’ Joshua Bell and his pianist collaborator, Jeremy Denk, given by the über philanthropic Kochs, Julia and David, in their beautiful home. Joshua and Jeremy mesmerized the audience with an hour of sonatas

from their new album, “French Impressions,” while French impressions in the Renoirs and Vernets smiled down upon us.

Joshua admitted his 300-year-old Strad was usually worth more than the homes he performed in “. . . till tonight.”

David commented on the amount of effort Joshua put into his sonata. “We have a shower upstairs, if you’d like to use it!” And Joshua noting the esteemed audience, said “What a crowd—I’m amazed I made the list!”

In the power pow-wow: Barbara Walters, Carolina Herrera, Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber, Princess Firyal of Jordan, Christine Schwarzman (with the best commute, up the elevator), Tory Burch, Christine Baranski, Brad Comisar, Gayle King, Bronson Van Wyck, Nicole Miller, Frédéric de Narp, Amy Fine Collins, Collins Kinga Lampert, and not many more, compounding the loveliness.

Still humming Ravel, I made my way to Tina Brown and Harry Evans’ chic maisonette, to toast Bill Bratton (the formidable ex Police Commish of NY, Boston and LA) and Harvard Prof, Zachary Tumin’s Tumin book, Collaborate or Perish!

As Bill’s great pal, Leonard Stern says, this book shows us, through example, “that we can no longer, go it alone.” Harry Evans noted, “technology counts, but people talking to people counts for more.” I agreed, and spoke to Caroline Hirsch and Andrew Fox, Hilary Geary Ross (whose own book was the holiday hit, and keeps going!) and Wilbur Ross, Allison Stern and Robert Zimmerman.

The release of his uncensored, unselfconscious examination of a man on the brink of matrimony was apparently both cathartic and inspirational. George got down on his knee, midway through his Doubles’ book party, and proposed to Hilly. “No big deal”, she told us, “It’s not the first time, and probably won’t be the last.”

Surprised, but jubilant witnesses included: Katherine Bryan (George’s beautiful mother, who saw George’s dad, George Jr., there for the first time in over 25 years), Annette Tapert, Jong-Fast Nick Denton, Duane Hampton, Sharon Molly Jong-Fast, Haynes-Dale Chris Tennant, Shelby Bryan, Hoge, Amanda Haynes-Dale, McFadden C.S. Ledbetter, Peter Kaplan and Bartle Mary McFadden, Bull, who is working on his new novel and just became a grandparent to a baby girl—“Will you make her call you Uncle?” I asked—a tried and true method of sounding young(er). “Brother,” he said.

My screening spectrum this month took me from a movie about a powerful, cage-fighting gal, to toe-tapping Broadway boys, and don’t we love a little of both?

Andrew Saffir’s Cinema Society introduced us to Gina Carano, ex-cage fighting acting novice and star, along with Michael Douglas, Ewan McGregor and Michael Fassbender in Steven Soderbergh’s exciting new movie, Haywire. Think female Jason Bourne. She thanked me for my praise and said, “It’s so nice hear that from another woman. We can be so hard on each other.” And she wasn’t quite sure who made her dress when a big fashion writer inquired. Never change.

Joining the stars, were stars in their own right: Graydon Carter, Calvin Klein, Blake Lively, Reed and Delphine Krakoff, Shala Monroque, Elizabeth Banks, Tony Danza (who gave me a lift to the after party at Sons of Essex and told me he’s producing and starring in a new musical about Las Vegas), Stefano Tonchi, David Maupin and Debra Winger.

By now, you are probably already addicted to Smash, Steven Spielberg’s new NBC series about the making of a Broadway hit. Imagine it on a big screen at The Met with hundreds of Broadway babies interrupting every scene with mad applause and then toasting it all in the Temple of Dendur. That’s what the Cinema Society and NBC did.

Michael Mayer, Theresa Rebeck and the glittering cast, including Katharine McPhee and Megan Hilty (who musically battle for the lead role in a show based on Marilyn Monroe), Anjelica Huston and Debra Messing received kudos from their fellow thespians, including Sarah Jessica Parker (chewing gum, which I just learned helps you think, so I have stopped clucking), Matthew Broderick, Nathan Lane, and Uma Thurman lovingly tucked in with her daughter, Maya. And if we all like the TV Broadway production, guess where it will go?

Yup, Broadway. Now that’s a reality show I’ll watch. ✦

hese roads aren’t made for driving,” smirked my cab driver, who was charging me a slick $50 to travel up a mountain in Park City, Utah in a nearblizzard at the end of January. The outrageous sum was taking me only a few miles–from the St. Regis to upper Deer Valley–but as I white-knuckled my seat belt, I hailed Mary that it was taking me there safely.

That Saturday, I am sure I wasn’t the only one at the Sundance Film Festival who was willing to empty their pockets for a semi-safe ride to home base. In fact, I know I wasn’t. A tired-eyed friend working an event told me she had competitively hailed down one of the few cabs on Main Street outside of the Bing Bar, a space that remains all but empty the rest of the year, when a pretty blond girl came barreling at her breathless.

“Oh, please let me take it!” The girl pleaded, with big doe eyes and a desperate voice. “I’ve had the worst day.”

My friend relented, and let the girl—Emma Roberts, girl— actress and niece of Julia Roberts—pile into her cab.

A week later it would be reported that the 20-yearold, who was there solo promoting her flick Celeste and Jesse Forever Forever, had split with her 22-year-old boyfriend, Chord Overstreet, earlier that month.

Emma Roberts The rich and famous are obviously not immune to some of the downsides of Park City. Later that same evening, at the after-party for Arbitrage Arbitrage, a Wall Street-like flick that can credit New Yorker Mike Heller as a producer, I overheard a group of young girls chatting about one of the pitfalls of beautiful Utah. “Where’s Lizzie?” the lithe brunette asked her friend, as the other swigged a cocktail. “She went home early, she doesn’t feel well . . . Altitude sickness.” The mumbles about movies made it clear the girls and their male pal were discussing Elizabeth Olsen. Mary-Kate and Ashley’s little sister was there promoting Liberal Arts, and apparently was feeling the 7,000 feet she was above sea level.

The night before, at a Moroccanoil Supper at the Montage Deer Valley, Will Forte vented to me about a different kind of ailment: Homesickness. “Man, do I miss New York,” the former “Saturday Night Live” star, who now resides in California, sighed. Forte was there to fête Tim & Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie, a movie he described to me in detail before regaling me with a tale about getting mistaken identity in an Arizona gas station. “You don’t care about this, do you? I’m sorry . . . I’m just so tired.” I assured Forte— who can now be entitled Mr. Nice Guy—that I did in fact care.

And all was forgiven: Considering Forte had only been at the

Of course, there was. Especially if you consider yourself a night owl. For those who did, after the nightly parties at Grey Goose Blue Door, the Bing Bar, and even the Gansevoort pop-up on Main Street, bundled-up partiers with nightly stamina from Los Angeles and New York alike would march on to Tao, where they could be found dancing on top of banquettes with Harvey Weinstein, Mary J. Blige, Aziz Ansari, Lil Jon, Malin Akerman, Paris Hilton and brother Baron, all thanks to New York’s own Noah Tepperberg. The nightlife impresario had turned a space that served as a parking garage for Park City residents for the majority of the year into a replica of one of his Tao night-clubs, complete with an open bar for those lucky enough to make it past the strict velvet rope policy.

Dreading another $50, four-mile cab ride due to weather conditions, I snuck out the back-door of Tepperberg’s dark and ravey Tao before closing on Saturday, but found I wasn’t the only one with what had seemed like a wise idea. “We can share a cab, although I’m not quite sure where I’m going,” said a tall man, with longer dreadlocks. The producer with a now forgotten name turned out to be a friend of the singer Drake’s, who filled my friend and me in on the singer’s plague: Due to the weather conditions, Drake’s plane had gotten stuck at the airport and he was more than three hours late for his performance at the Bing Bar, leaving Aziz Ansari to do stand-up in his stead.

“I don’t even know if he ever made it to Tao!” laughed his friend. Alas, we didn’t either. ✦

Edward West (Daddy) Browning gave Peaches a pet gander shortly after they were married.

Heenan. Browning was 51 at the time—a neat little anagram of her age—so clearly, these two were meant to be.

They met at a sorority and Browning knew he had to have her. So much so that he lavished the child with presents: $10,000 for her sweet sixteen, four fur coats, 175 cloth coats, 60 dresses, and, of course, a teddy bear that played music!

The two didn’t work out. Gasp! Peaches had a nervous breakdown and went

running back to her mommy. Browning filed for a separation.

Browning received more than 40,000 fan letters, but never married again.

The final years of his life were filled with oddities—throwing a Christmas party for 40,000 children, dieting on green grass in hopes of losing 20 pounds. But the public seemed to love Browning no matter what the pedophile did; he would later pose with the 2.2 million fan letters he received in his lifetime. ✦

n some states a 16-year-old can marry a man who is her senior by, oh say, 40 years if she gets consent from her parents. You are probably thinking about some D-list movie star and his child-bride. Shhh. We’re not talking about that. We are imagining what it would have been like for multi-millionaire real estate tycoon Edward West Browning if he had lived today. His penchant for young women would have been A-OK in the eyes of the law as long as he found parents willing to sign on the dotted line and lived in the right state.

Remember Browning? He was the guy who graduated from Columbia Law School and amassed a fortune before marrying his first wife in 1915. He was 41 and adopted two daughters, moving the family to a huge West 81st Street and Central Park West apartment that had a roof with a lake on it. Then, there was the 1923 divorce where he accused his wife of falling in love with the dentist and she accused him of having a fondness for little girls. Ooof.

So Browning placed an ad in the Herald Tribune seeking to adopt a 14-year-old girl who was, “pretty and refined,” garnering responses from 12,000 who thought they’d meet his criteria. Browning sifted through the applications to choose Mary Louise Spas.

Hailing from Astoria, she called him “Daddy” and he took her on shopping trips and they went out dancing until it was revealed that Mary was 21!

The old hag, how dare she trick him?

The adoption was voided.

or maybe the first time in her career, Leandra Medine is showing signs of opening up. The 23-year-old blogger, known to readers of her site as “The Man Repeller,” has followed a strict mantra of being “personable over personal” that has made her irresistible, if not entirely accessible, to her fans.

But with a recent engagement and an upcoming wedding at the St. Regis, she’s slowly coming out of her Thakoon cocoon.

Over a latté at The Smile in NoHo on the Friday before Fashion Week, Medine almost looks like she’s wearing a disguise. Having made her living for over the past two years on the promotion of fashion-forward, often wacky attire, it’s slightly disappointing to find the native New Yorker in an over-sized sweater and scarf. But a large sparkly engagement ring and an “arm party” of bracelets—a term Medine herself has coined—make up for the lack of a tufted skirt with multiple layers or high-waisted shorts.

The Upper East Sider has made time for me in her morning between a flurry of meetings that include styling a Lila Horn show for Fashion Week and working on her popular blog, which garners 2M hits a month and helped her top Adweek’s “Fashion’s Power 25 list” last September, beating out Lady Gaga, Anna Wintour, Michelle Obama and Kate Middleton.

“I’ve RSVPed to like 50 shows,” she admits, when I ask her for her Fashion Week schedule. Amongst them, Calvin Klein and Derek Lam, both coveted first-year invites for the blogger, but she did not attend the show of one of her favorite young designers, Alexander Wang. Strangely enough for Medine, she missed the hot-ticket taking place on Saturday, February 11th to attend her own engagement party.

Donning a short white Marchesa dress at 583 Park, Medine’s friends and family came to celebrate her engagement to her long-term, on-and-off boyfriend, whom she keeps anonymous on her blog, and won’t name here. When I ask what he does for a living, she says, “We’re fulfilling all the New York stereotypes, which means . . .” she trails off. “Finance,” I say.

But getting back to fashion, the open-faced, long-legged brunette will not be slipping into a dress designed by Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig for her nuptials. While her millions of readers and 60K Twitter followers have waited with bated breath to hear who will be designing her wedding dress, it sounds as if she’s narrowed it down to one hot designer, whom she also considers a friend: Prabal Gurung.

“We’re actually talking about the prospect of him doing my wedding dress,” she smiles, almost shyly, at the thought of a custom-made gown on a girl’s biggest day by one of fashion’s most popular men. “I think Prabal Gurung is probably going to be the most relevant and important designer in fashion five years from now. His collections are insane.”

As it is for any woman who has made her career in fashion, it is easy for Medine to tick off a litany of favorite designers.

The difference, however, is a number of them, such as Gurung, are personal friends with the famous blogger. Last fall, Medine walked the cat-walk for Rebecca Minkoff ’s Fashion Week show, after, Minkoff tells me she challenged Medine to a walk-off after dinner on a rainy night. Medine concluded her audition runway strut with a funny routine from “Saturday Night Live,” which she watches regularly. It sealed the deal. “I love Becky,” Medine says, calling the designer by a pet-name when I inquire about the relationship.

The feeling is mutual. “Leandra reminds me of what Katharine Hepburn was to fashion in a time when women only wore skirts and she wore pants. She stood for the modern woman in an era of glamour,” Minkoff enthuses. “I appreciate her singular point of view; women love the trends men hate.

She’s fearless and empowers other people to be the same.”

Minkoff keeps Medine on her mind in the workplace as well.

“We consider her part of the brand’s family. Our barometer. We always ask ourselves: “How would the Man Repeller wear this?”

Danielle Snyder, of the jewelry line Dannijo created with her older sister Jodie, has developed an almost sister-like relationship with Medine since meeting her a year ago at a party for the blogging forum Tumblr. “It was love at first sight,” Snyder says, adding she thinks they’ve spent “364 out of the 365 days” that they’ve known each other together. “She’s like a fox on oversized clogs,” she says about the blogger’s ability to actually not repel men. “I never tease her because just when I think she’s looking too hot, I realize she hasn’t shaved her legs in way too long.”

“I feel so blessed I’ve become so close with (Danielle and Jodie),” Medine says earnestly, despite Snyder’s joking commentary, and despite the fact that she has never in her life owned a pair of clogs. Medine helped host a dinner with the sisters the night before Fashion Week last season, and has another collaboration with Dannijo due out next month, called Mr. Dannijo’s Eye Spies, a take-off of their original Mr. Dannijo collaboration.

She admits not everyone is singing her praises though. The “haters,” as she calls them are still lurking on the internet, ready to pounce on her every move, due to her quick, yet not unwarranted, success. Despite receiving lengthy and numerous congratulations upon posting news of her engagement on her website, other sites condemned her for it as if it were a kind of betrayal. “I didn’t mean for the ‘man repeller’ to be me (initially),” she says, explaining that the name of the site and on-line persona was about making a “social comment about fashion.”

That social comment—basically that the higher the fashion, the more likely it is to totally turn off the opposite sex—and that some cutting edge fashion can act as a kind of “sartorial contraceptive,” has spawned collaborations with Gryphon, Six, and numerous other projects, including a book with Open Road due out in April of 2013. The non-fiction book will delve a little further into her personal life, a topic Medine struggles to pen. “It’s been a battle. It’s been very hard to write,” she admits, due to the lack of photos which drive the content currently on The Man Repeller. “I think it’s probably going to read like a Jen Lancaster book,” she adds referring to the witty author of Bitter is the New Black and Bright Lights, Big Ass. The transition from blogging with photos to book-writing may seem like a hefty task, but Medine is no dummy. She discussed the feat of graduating from The New School last May with a journalism degree while balancing a full-time career during her last semester, but she pulled it off - with a 3.6GPA. She cites Stephanie LaCava as someone she admires in the industry for “having a good handle on fashion writing but yet being very intellectually driven.” The two share a love for The Year of Magical Thinking and Blue Nights author Joan Didion.

“Every now and then, if my days are too ‘fashion,’ I’ll come home and read a chapter of Joan Didion or Hunter S. Thompson,” Medine confesses. “It’s really hard to take yourself out of the world of ‘Pleats are having such a moment’ or ‘This gold lamé is everything!’

The quirky yet eloquent blogger is not sure exactly when or even if she will actually take herself out of that world, but there seems to be some sort of end in sight. “I can’t imagine I will be blogging forever. It’s not totally feasible,” Medine shrugs.

“I’d assume I have a good year under my belt of success.”

And despite being only 23, the wise New Yorker has some advice for those looking to get into her profession.

“I always tell people who are starting blogs, if you are doing it to become famous or in the public eye, don’t do it. People can smell desperation.”

“Every now and then, if my days are too ‘fashion,’ I’ll come home and read a chapter of Joan Didion or Hunter Thompson. It’s really hard to take yourself out of the world of ‘Pleats are having such a moment’ or, ‘This gold lame is everything!’”

Kling recently collaborated on a line for Swedish megastore H&M, becoming the first blogger to do so in the history of the company. Kling also recently began publishing the magazine Style By, available in the iTunes app store.

Quite possibly the most charming style website out there right now, fashion fan Ari Seth Cohen takes a slightly different approach to the art of style blogging. With fans like the incomparable Iris Apfel, Cohen has quickly become a darling of the online fashion scene.

Previously titled Young, Fat and Fabulous, Gregg launched her site in 2008 and was instantly embraced for her fearless fashion and her take on the oh-so-taboo weight issue plaguing the industry. In 2011, Gregg became the first Twitter correspondent for MTV and continues to maintain her site, inspiring women all over the world to feel confident and chic, no matter what size they’re pulling off the rack. ✦

Last year she launched her new contemporary offering ‘Erin.’ Her feminine, romantic looks earned her the Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation Award, and she was a finalist for the CFDA/ Vogue Fashion Fund, and has been inducted as a member of the CFDA. Style philosophy: It’s fantastic to experiment with trends, but know your body. It serves every woman to be her own style icon.

Diane von Furstenberg Diane von Furstenberg has made a lasting mark in fashion history, bursting onto the scene in the 1970’s with the now-iconic knitted jersey “wrap dress.” A winner of CFDA’s Lifetime Achievement award and the Council’s current President, she is an influential force shaping the industry, nurturing talent and taking a stand on important issues like protecting under-aged models.

James LaForce James LaForce is a highly-regarded media and communications consultant representing some of the world’s best-known brands. She has appeared regularly as a fashion commentator on the “Today” show, CNN, CNBC and Full Frontal Fashion.

all, gorgeous, gracious and smart, Crystal McCrary always has several balls in the air. She trained as a lawyer then practiced entertainment law long enough to figure out that she was more interested in entertainment than law. Since then, she has produced television documentaries, written novels, and is working on her first feature length documentary, Little Ballers, which explores the impact of sports on urban youth as a pipeline to opportunity.

This month, her non-fiction coffee-table book celebrating remarkable and accomplished African-American women like Michelle Obama and Gayle King, plus many more, Inspiration: Profiles of Black Women Changing Our World, is being published by Abrams. A star-studded party at the International Center for Photography will launch it. We sat down to talk about her latest project and the women she met and profiled.

AVENUE: What inspired you to write this book?

Crystal McCrary: As a woman—particularly as an AfricanAmerican woman who grew up in Detroit, Michigan raised by strong women—I have always been drawn to the stories of ladies who have triumphed “in spite of ” the odds being stacked against them. When I graduated from high school, I received a copy of Brian Lanker’s book I Dream a World as a gift and this was my first time seeing a book with such a dignified image of a black woman (ironically, all these years later, I have the same editor and publisher as Brian Lanker – serendipity).

In Lanker’s book, I discovered photos and stories of 75 extraordinary women who were all living meaningful lives, and giving back to their communities despite seemingly insurmountable roadblocks. As a 17-year-old about to go off to college, I found within those pages a road map of possibility for me as a young woman looking to find my way in the world. Flash forward to my life now as a mother, an author and a producer, one of the television shows I created, “Leading Women,” profiled women who have impacted the world socially, politically and culturally. I wanted to expand on this concept of exploring the journeys of extraordinary women and capture their inspirations in photos and in their words in hopes of it reaching a new generation of young women looking to find their way in the world – thus Inspiration: Profiles of Black Women Changing Our World was born.

AVENUE: How did you choose the women you featured in the book?

AVENUE: What was the most surprising thing you learned in the process of researching these women’s lives?

C.M.: It shocked me to learn the devastating statistics and facts about the cradle to prison pipeline that Marian Wright Edelman is committed to combating through the Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools. I was transfixed to hear Judith Jamison’s recollection of the first time she performed Alvin Ailey’s “Cry” for an audience after having the now iconic white leotard and skirt sewn on her body moments before the curtain rose.

I was completely motivated and inspired by all of these women’s journeys to self-awareness and ultimate fulfillment in not only their dreams but their life’s purpose.

Each woman shared kernels of knowledge about perseverance, self-belief, instinct, magic of creativity, and passion that have left an indelible imprint upon my life.

C.M.: I brainstormed with several people including my editor, and initially had over one hundred women on the list. Of course, that had to be narrowed down but the criteria was to have women who are leaders in their fields representing a range of professions from fashion to art to politics to dance to business to music to medicine. We are so multi-faceted as women, mothers, career women – I wanted to canvass it all. It was also important to me that the women profiled be multi-generational. In Inspiration, they range in age from 18 years old to almost 90 years old. My main criteria, however, was that all of the women needed to have a seriousness of purpose and to be committed to excellence.

AVENUE: Is there one story in particular that really moved you and expanded your sense of what is possible?

C.M.: If I had to narrow it down, I could maybe get it to three women’s stories: Debra Martin Chase because she not only had the courage to leave a secure position as a top lawyer (after graduating from Harvard Law School) but she brilliantly charted a path for herself as one of the top producers in Hollywood in a man’s game, Shonda Rhimes as one of the most prolific television writers of our time because she lived her life by the principle of a true writer—you must have the discipline to sit and write every day. Shonda has thus created some of the most compelling and complex characters ever seen on television with her “Grey’s Anatomy” characters, plus she is prolific and profound all at once. Bethann Hardison has had a dozen lives and has been such an original her whole life from being in a gang as a young girl to jitter bug dancer to track runner to model to modeling agent/manager to documentary filmmaker. Through it all she always remembered to “not look back and to run her own race.” But there is so so much that these women taught me. I owe them, truly.

She was raised in a Muslim country but was always taught that she could do anything a man could do and more. This early support by her parents ultimately translated into her commanding respect as a woman and a model/businesswoman. Once you get past the fact that she is breathtakingly gorgeous with this exquisite body that was kissed by God, she is this deeply humble ballerina with a tremendous work ethic that has brought her from the Boys and Girls Club of Costa Mesa, California dancing in sweat pants and socks to the stage of the Metropolitan Opera—I can’t help but marvel at her talent and inner-beauty. And, her perseverance as well—to perform and compete at the level she has on a stage with very few people with her skin has been no less than remarkable and challenging.”

I also marvel that she manages four children, a husband and such a demanding career that has spanned from journalism to philanthropy to being a documentarian.
