MY FAVORITE THINGS No one knows the best the city has to offer more than someone who lives or works in the midst of it all. We asked a few prominent New Yorkers to share their special places and off-the-radar hot spots, as well as where they go to get inspired, have a meal, grab a cup of coffee, buy a trendy outfit, and more.

TALES FROM THE CONCIERGE DESK Concierges at the city’s top luxury hotels are the ultimate insiders who often make the impossible possible. NEW YORK IN THE FOUR SEASONS No season in New York is like the other, be it strolling along Arthur Avenue in the Bronx, enjoying an Italian ice on a hot summer’s day or heading to Central Park in the autumn when the trees become

splashed with brilliant shades of red, yellow, orange and gold. New York’s flowers burst into color in the spring, and there is nothing like New York in the winter, with its holiday lights and festive window displays. New York is a city for all seasons and four prominent New Yorkers share their favorites 55

NEIGHBORHOOD INSIDERS Noteworthy locals like Rosanna Scotto, Leonard Steinberg, Wendy Federman, Frederick Warburg Peters, Hall Willkie, Bess Freedman, Dr. Norbert Sander Jr. and Ernesto Bacalzo share some favorites in their neighborhoods of Chelsea, Greenwich Village, Tribeca, Broadway, Upper East Side, Upper West Side and Upper Manhattan. This year we also head to the Hamptons, that famed peninsula surrounded by the most beautiful beaches and bays in the world, to discover the favorites of neighborhood insiders Robert Nelson, Jay Flagg, Anthony DeVivio and Hellen Stubbmann in Southampton, East Hampton, Westhampton Beach and Montauk.

BREAKFAST Viand Cafe Feels like a quintessential New York diner, but with great food. Unlike the old East Side location that almost seemed too small to hold waiters and customers at the same time (not that there was anything wrong with that), this one is bright and spacious. The crowd ranges from captains of industry to college students, and the waiters treat them all with the same no-nonsense charm. It’s also great for dinner before a concert at the Beacon Theater next door. 2130 Broadway 212.877.2888 www.viandcafenyc.com

LUNCH Burger Heaven When you want to go out for lunch in Midtown but don’t have a lot of time, patience or a reservation (which is me on most days), Burger Heaven is ideal. You can count on a table and a great Greek salad or turkey burger that arrives remarkably fast, almost before the waiter finishes scribbling down your order. 9 East 53rd Street 212.752.0340 www.burgerheaven.com

“Viand Cafe feels like a quintessential New York diner, but with great food. The location is bright and spacious.”

DINNER Robert Robert overlooks Central Park from the top of the Museum of Arts and Design, offering the rare mix of a great restaurant and a postcard-worthy setting. Conventional wisdom suggests that the food and service would be underwhelming given the view, but that’s certainly not the case. With the locally sourced menu and the impeccable, unpretentious service, you’ll find a lot of New York City “regulars” rather than tourists here. Standouts for me are the seafood dishes and the live jazz duo. 2 Columbus Circle 212.299.7730 www.robertnyc.com

Eleonora E. Johnson’s career in real estate began in California, where she became a top agent and joined the estates division of a major real estate broker as a senior relocation specialist. Upon moving to the East Coast, Johnson joined a real estate company in New York as its relocation director, which led to her opening a firm of her own. Since joining the Upper East Side office in 2005, Johnson has implemented multiple education and optional coaching programs that are offered to the agents affiliated with her office and established new administrative systems, which have resulted in significant success for her office in agent retention and sales volume. More Than Skin Deep AVENUE catches up with Dr. Anne Chapas and the physicians of New York’s premier skin care center.

D

rs. Anne Chapas, Jennifer MacGregor, Robyn Gmyrek, and Jennifer Chwalek are boardcertified, Manhattan-based dermatologists specializing in skin rejuvenation and cosmetic procedures. All four doctors are considered industryleading professionals at the top of their game and work together at Union Square Laser Dermatology, across from the historic NYC park that bears the practice’s name. We spoke with this “dream team” of physicians about what sets them apart, and how even the temporary visitor can improve their skin while still enjoying their trip.

their vacation or get back to their job. Even better, we have relationships with leading physicians from all over the world, so we can help ensure proper continuity of care no matter where our patients are going next.

All four of you have been recognized as “Superdoctors,” “Beauty Geniuses,” or “Rising Stars.” What does “beauty” mean to you and what sets your practice apart? Dr. Chapas: No matter where you live, healthy, naturallooking skin is beautiful, and so is the internal confidence that goes along with it. Our practice is dedicated to delivering excellent yet natural-looking results for a look that doesn’t reveal that any cosmetic treatment was performed. When you walk around New York, it’s easy to notice the overdone results. We focus on the subtle enhancements that give our patients a great result with a natural look.

What are some of your more popular treatments, especially those that have little to no downtime? Dr. MacGregor: It really depends on the individual person and his/her goals. Ultimately, everything we do is either noninvasive or minimally invasive, so we’re experienced at driving results that meet our patient’s busy schedules. For example, injections such as Botox and Dysport are very popular to help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and provide a more refreshed look. We also use injectable fillers to restore youthful fullness and lifting to the face, and we do a lot of gentle laser resurfacing treatments such as “Clear and Brilliant,” which can improve the skin’s tone and texture through a natural healing response. When it comes to noninvasive fat removal and body contouring, we have some of the most advanced technology available, including Coolsculpting, Trusculpt, and Velashape. Likewise, our tightening treatments gently lift the skin, helping to build new collagen while having little or no recovery time.

How is treating a visitor different than treating a local? Dr. Gmyrek: Our breadth of services allows us to customize treatments for anyone, regardless if they’re a visitor or a local. We see countless people each year who are on holiday or in town for work and want to leverage our experience to give them a little boost. When it comes to visitors, we can deliver treatments that not only work, but also have little or no recovery time, so they can enjoy

Do you treat men at your practice? Dr. Chwalek: Yes, of course. We see many men at our practice as the popularity of men’s skin care treatments continue to grow (especially Botox and noninvasive fat reduction around their midsection). We understand that a man’s skin and his desired outcome are often different than those of women, so it’s important for us to take into consideration our patient’s concerns and individualize our treatments accordingly.

nic Union Squa

re park

Any final advice to our readers? What can they do on their own to build healthy skin? Dr. Chapas: It may sound boring, but wearing sunscreen daily is critical to preventing fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots. For those that may already have sun damage, new research suggests that laser resurfacing treatments, such as the procedures we do in our office, can actually help heal sun damaged skin from the inside out. When looking at skin care products, we can help determine what ingredients are best for your skin type, but we often recommend products that contain retinol and certain, proven antioxidants that protect against environmental and lifestyle damage, such as vitamins C and E. ✦

TALES ROM THE CON CIERGE DESK Concierges at the city’s top luxury hotels are the ultimate insiders who often make the impossible possible. Concierges from Waldorf Astoria New York, Park Hyatt New York and Mandarin Oriental New York share some of their most outlandish requests and where they go to enjoy a memorable meal and relax.

garlic, or condiments. Fulfilling the request became one of negotiation. Many calls were made, and several well-known chefs felt as though they would not be able to live up to their reputation in serving such a meal, but in the end, the request was fulfilled and the guest was more than satisfied.

T

he Waldorf Astoria is one of the most recognizable and historic hotels not only in New York City, but throughout the world. Because of its iconic status, working as a concierge at the Waldorf provides an ideal setting for both unique and over-the-top requests, and unusual lobby sightings. One memorable request dealt with a very high profile individual who was making an early television appearance the following morning. The guest inquired about an in-room spray tan at 11:30 p.m, which I was able to accommodate. Admittedly, this was not the only time I have been proven wrong when vendors come by to offer niche services and I think, “Right, like I’ll ever need this.” Another particularly odd request was that of a guest who wanted to go to a fine dining restaurant of my recommendation, but the meal had to be made with no sugar, butter, milk, starch, soy, onions, celery, carrots,

I’ve witnessed a number of odd sights in the lobby of the hotel over the years. Some that stick out would include a poodle whose entire coat of fur was dyed pink, guests changing clothes in the middle of a busy lobby with no shame or regard to censorship, and swarms of groupies waiting for a glimpse of (or a hopeful autograph from) stars or celebrities reportedly staying at the hotel.

choice of more than a dozen toppings, Adrienne’s invokes the marriage of premium ingredients, pleasing textures and perfect seasoning to make any pizza connoisseur a regular diner. SHOPPING Shopping is a New York staple. When people ask where to go, the obligatory first question is “What are you looking for?” If you’re looking for souvenirs, I would recommend heading to Chinatown. If you’re looking for boutique shopping, I would recommend the West Village. The droves of people in the neighborhood are neutralized by a jungle of tree-lined streets and understated yet eloquent architecture. For a more exclusive shopping experience, I would peruse the stores along Madison Avenue, or better yet, consult with a personal

WHERE TO EAT Amali (115 East 60th Street, 212.339.8363) is one of my favorite spots. It offers sustainable Mediterranean-inspired cuisine. With simple, refined concepts, Amali consistently teases the palate by showcasing nouveau but somehow familiar flavors, along with a sensational wine list. PIZZA Everyone asks for New York pizza, but each individual has a different perception of what that label really entails. I always opine that the best pizza in New York is Adrienne’s Pizzabar (54 Stone Street, 212.248.3838) located in the Financial District. Served in a one-size rectangular pan with the option of “old fashioned” or “white” and shopper at Bergdorf Goodman (754 Fifth Avenue, 212.753.7300). There are many who feel as though an afternoon there is akin to a day at a museum.

NEIGHBORHOODS My favorite neighborhood to explore is the Financial District. I always recommend to guests that they need an entire day downtown regardless of whether or not they are planning on going to the Statue of Liberty or Ellis Island. In addition to the obvious allure of Battery Park, I love Fraunces Tavern (54 Pearl Street, 212.425.1778) which is the oldest surviving building in the city. The restaurant is okay, but the museum is a historical gem and is the place where George Washington bid farewell to his troops during the Revolutionary War. Wall Street is a zoo during the week, but accessible for a stroll on weekends: Head up to Trinity Church and continue toward the new World Trade Center complex, which is beautiful and offers dining, shopping and photo opportunities.

AVENUE speaks with Mario Nico, founder of his namesake salon, a luxurious haven in Chelsea How did you get your start in the beauty industry? I had an uncle who owned a salon in Westport, and during my teenage years I would go and help him over the summer, not really thinking this would be my profession at the time. Then one night after high school, I was walking down the street, where I found a bunch of girls outside a beauty school, and I wanted to see what it was all about. I enrolled and learned from really great teachers and editorial hairdressers, who became my mentors. I then traveled to Europe with them and became their editorial assistant on photo shoots. My experience in Europe helped pave the way for my position at Bendel. Then in 1997, I had the opportunity to open my salon in Chelsea. Where do you find inspiration for the beauty services that you offer? My inspiration is always in art, nature and people, as well as European and Mediterranean architecture. Music is always interesting as well—it takes you to a particular time and place. Can you tell us about the products offered at the salon? I have my own product line, which includes a new rose oil collection that’s meant to rehydrate your hair and boost shine. It’s our own blend that we create here—we also offer a treatment using these products, and it comes with a head, neck and shoulder massage.

he American Museum of Natural History is a gem in and of itself, but ascend a short staircase and the sparkling jewels in the Morgan Memorial Hall of Gems surround you. Looking for a rock of your own? Well, head uptown to the Diamond District.

Grand Central Terminal has a “Whispering Gallery,” an architectural anomaly where your words will travel loud and clear when spoken into one corner to the direct opposite corner of the concourse, even above all the hustle and bustle. Everyone knows about the spectacular views from the Empire State Building, but few know that the observation deck is open late—very late. Once everyone else has turned in, head up at midnight and take in the city shining below you. This iconic building stays open until 2 a.m.

The opulent decor at Midtown’s Russian Tea Room is the stuff of legend: antique samovars, a golden tree with Venetian glass eggs and a nearly 20-foot bear-shaped aquarium.

Anyone with a serious shoe fetish already knows about Saks Fifth Avenue’s monumental array of heels. But did you know that the department store’s shoe floor is so big that it has its own zip code (10022-SHOE)?

Step into Nom Wah Tea Parlor, NYC’s first dim sum restaurant, for a trip back in time. Then open the door onto Doyers Street, one of Chinatown’s prettiest thoroughfares, where you’ll be transported by the Chinese characters on storefronts and the aromas of Cantonese cooking. Keep the evening going by getting cozy next door at hidden cocktail bar Apothéke and ordering up a classic drink like an old fashioned. For a taste of history, venture to Delmonico’s, where none other than President Lincoln loved to eat mashed potatoes smothered

Didn’t buy your Broadway tickets in advance? Don’t worry: show up early at a Broadway theater’s box office and you could score great same-day seats once it opens. They’re called “rush tickets,” and almost every show has them. A behind-the-scenes tour of the New Amsterdam Theatre, home to Disney productions including the current show Aladdin, is a magical experience. Step into Sardi’s during the post-theater rush and find yourself surrounded by nearly 90 years’ worth of theater history, autographed caricatures and, often, Broadway actors dining after a night of work. Go to the Belasco Theatre—where Blackbird, with Michelle Williams and Jeff Daniels, is onstage right now—and legend has it you may just see the ghost of its namesake playwright, David Belasco, roaming the premises. Mark Twain was just one of the celebrated tenants at Wave Hill, a public garden and cultural center in the Bronx along the Hudson River, featuring flower gardens, an alpine house and greenhouses. ✦

A CITY FOR ALL

eason

No season in New York is like the other, be it strolling along Arthur Avenue in the Bronx and enjoying an Italian ice on a hot summer’s day or heading to Central Park in the autumn when the trees become splashed with brilliant shades of red, yellow, orange and gold. New York’s flowers burst into color in the spring, and there is nothing like New York in the winter, with its holiday lights and festive window displays. New York is a city for all seasons, and four prominent New Yorkers share their favorites.

F

ounded in 1937, the Carnegie Deli is one of the country’s most famous establishments, and Marian Harper is now at its helm. Located in the heart of midtown Manhattan just across from its namesake, Carnegie Hall, the deli was a labor of love for Marian’s dad, Milton Parker, who took over the restaurant in 1976 from the original owners, who opened it in 1937.

AMCONC2016_NEW YORK 4 SEASONS 2016_r1.indd 46

After a brief closure, the famous eatery reopened in February 2016 with a splash. Mayor Bill de Blasio was on hand and exclaimed, “This is a quintessential city place, this is an icon . . . this is the finest pastrami sandwich in New York!”

true for the Carnegie Deli. Chance encounters, engagements and business deals have taken place at the restaurant’s communal seating. The site was thrust into the spotlight when Woody Allen based the narrative of Broadway Danny Rose from its tables.

Presidents, celebrities and athletes join New Yorkers and tourists alike as they clamor for Carnegie Deli’s towering sandwiches. The New York Times has declared the pastrami here the tops. What makes it special is that Carnegie Deli cures and smokes all its own meats and also bakes its own celebrated cheesecakes and knishes.

It has been said there are eight million stories in New York City, and that holds

Spring is a special season, says Harper as the weather starts to warm, flowers burst into color and the trees bloom. Plus, Harper, a true “foodie,” enjoys sitting outdoors eating and drinking at her favorite haunts. A treasure is Nocello, a welcoming restaurant where the owners are always on hand to greet its patrons with a wonderful ambience, serving the most delicious food. It’s easy to miss it as you walk by, but don’t! They will make you anything you desire and the wine list is wonderful. A nice touch is the Nocello, an after-dinner drink they serve. Another one of Harper’s neighborhood haunts is Café Fiorello, which features an antipasto bar with 32 vegetables and 12 seafood options, as well as pasta, fish, steaks and the restaurant’s signature thin-crust pizza. The North River Lobster Company, the largest floating lobster shack in New York City, sets sail every spring. Not only does Harper love the views during the cruise, she loves the seafood as well. The warmer weather also brings Harper to one of her most beloved outdoor spaces,

the Museum of Modern Art’s Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden. Gurgling fountains, rustling trees and amazing sculptures make this space one of her favorites in the city. Another favorite is the Modern, overlooking MoMA’s sculpture garden, and featuring contemporary cooking in a bright and airy setting. Central Park is another one of Harper’s respites. A walk around the reservoir is a favorite way to relax. The High Line in Chelsea is another treasure, says Harper,

built on the bed of an abandoned elevated train track, with more than 200 species of grasses, trees, perennials and shrubs now flourishing there. Across the street from her apartment, the fountain at the centerpiece of Lincoln Center Plaza dances as three concentric rings of jets shoot water into the air in a carefully orchestrated routine. Just as this water extravaganza is no ordinary fountain, spring in New York is no ordinary season.

“Summer in New York City and Italian ice are the perfect combination,” remarks Calvelli. Two of his favorite stops for this treat are Enrico’s Pastry Shop and Gino’s Pastry Shop, both in the Bronx. It doesn’t get better than strolling along

AMCONC2016_NEW YORK 4 SEASONS 2016_r1.indd 48

When New York City heats up in the summer people head outdoors. “This is when you get a sense of how incredibly diverse and full of energy the city is,” says Calvelli. From Shakespeare in the Park to strolling along Fifth Avenue, visiting a zoo or botanical garden, New York comes alive in the summer.

Arthur Avenue with an Italian ice in hand, he says. New York and pizza go hand in hand, enthuses Calvelli. In the world of pizza, Grimaldi’s, set under the Brooklyn Bridge, is an institution, he says. Another mandatory pizza stop is Zero Otto Nove, the Italian translation of Salerno, Italy’s telephone area code, not just a pizzeria but also a sprawling trattoria on Arthur Avenue. Calvelli’s favorite is the Carminuccio, topped with basil and pancetta, made only here and in Salerno. Coney Island screams summer. Historically one of the places New Yorkers went to enjoy the beach, Coney Island was known as, “America’s playground” in the early

1900s. It has made a tremendous turnaround in the last ten years. Luna Park is a fantastic attraction that brings out the child in everyone. Fun for everyone, from 8 to 80, there are rides, games, an arcade, go-carts, restaurants and food stands, plus the historic Cyclone roller coaster. While in the area, the New York Aquarium shouldn’t be missed. It is the only aquarium in New York City and features fascinating marine life and a wonderful sea lion show. No visit to Coney Island is complete without a visit to Totonno’s Pizzeria Napolitana for a slice. Another one of Calvelli’s favorites is Tom’s Coney Island, family owned and operated since 1936, with the best pancakes around. Tavern on the Green is a Central Park icon that shouldn’t be missed, especially in the summer. Even if you don’t go for a meal, have a drink at the outdoor patio, a magical New York experience. As you look

out, you will see the green lushness of the park and the iconic skyline above.

When New York City heats up in the summer people head outdoors. “This is when you get a sense of how incredibly diverse and full of energy the city is,” says Calvelli.

As the largest urban zoo in the country, the sprawling Bronx Zoo is set on 265 acres, with miles of walking trails along the only freshwater river in New York City. Visitors enjoy the beauty of nature as they learn about some of the most spectacular wildlife on the planet. As a lifelong New Yorker, born in the Bronx, how can you not mention the Yankees, quips Calvelli. “All my favorite New York traditions meld,” he says. “You can spend the day in the Bronx at the zoo or in a garden, have lunch on Arthur Avenue and eat some of the best Italian food west of Rome, and then end your day at Yankee Stadium, watching a world-class baseball game. The only place you can do this is in New York City!”

fifth-generation New Yorker, Elizabeth Ann Stribling-Kivlan is a graduate of the Chapin School and the College of the Holy Cross, where she studied comparative world religion. Stribling-Kivlan started working in real estate in 2001 in San Francisco, as an assistant to one of that city’s top producers. After two years on the West Coast, she returned to New York City and began her career at Stribling as a salesperson. During that time, she sold property both uptown and downtown, as well as in Brooklyn, where she worked on-site at One Brooklyn Bridge Park, the conversion of a former warehouse into 449 luxury apartments in Brooklyn Heights. Stribling-Kivlan joined the Stribling management team in 2006, as director of sales for the downtown offices. In 2010, Stribling-Kivlan became Stribling’s director of marketing and business development, overseeing the print, viral and social media of the company, as well as the global outreach efforts of the firm. In this capacity, she became the company’s “ambassador at large,” representing Stribling at the various meetings and conferences of its national and international affiliates. She was named president of Stribling & Associates, Ltd., on January 1, 2013. In running the company, she works closely with her mother, Elizabeth F. Stribling, the company’s chairman, and the entire Stribling management team.

AMCONC2016_NEW YORK 4 SEASONS 2016_r1.indd 51

Stribling-Kivlan’s favorite season in New York is autumn, when the air gets crisp and the trees become splashed with brilliant shades of red, yellow and orange. “There is nothing more stunning than watching the leaves begin to slowly change color within Central Park,” she says. September weather is perfect, she says, and nothing kicks off the season better

than the US Open tennis tournament. “I try to go out as many nights as possible. There is incredible energy, athleticism and pure fun.” Still warm enough to be outside, she takes advantage as much as possible. Champagne and oysters in the courtyard of the High Line Hotel is a favorite. “I am cognizant of the fact that the cold is just around the corner, and I relish being outside as much as I can.” As autumn descends on the city, more and more people return, and the energy grows. One of her favorite autumn events is the Halloween parade in Greenwich Village. “The costumes are over the top and the myriad of colors and styles make this a must, at least once, for anyone living or visiting New York.” A childhood memory she holds close is going to the Upper West Side on Thanksgiving eve to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade balloons be blown up.“ It’s amazing to watch the transformation,” she says. “And my excitement sets in as I kick off the holidays the next day.”

ure there are world-class museums, towering skyscrapers and fine dining, but what many do not realize is that Manhattan is a tapestry of neighborhoods. Noteworthy locals like Rosanna Scotto, Leonard Steinberg, Wendy Federman, Frederick Warburg Peters, Hall Willkie, Dr. Norbert Sander Jr. and Ernesto Bacalzo share some favorites in their neighborhoods of Chelsea, Greenwich Village, Tribeca, Broadway, Upper East Side, Upper West Side and Upper Manhattan. Dr. Norbert W. Sander Jr.

UPPER MANHATTAN DR. NORBERT W. SANDER JR. Physician; Winner, New York City Marathon; Founder, Armory Foundation, New York

Longtime physician to clam diggers and mussel suckers alike—local lingo for native City Islanders and mainlandborn transplants respectively—Norbert Sander is the first (and to date, only) New Yorker to win the New York City Marathon. This was in 1974, when the event was run in Central Park. An internist specializing in family medicine, a newly degreed Dr. Sander hung his shingle on City Island, where he maintained a practice for many years. Running is a major part of his life. The Fort Washington Armory, with its huge, vaulted ceiling and 96,000 square feet of wooden floor, had been the New York City’s premier arena for indoor track from about 1910 to the mid-1980s. Time and neglect, however, took their toll. Sander has extraordinary memories of competing on the armory’s original wooden track as a student at Fordham Prep, in the Bronx and later Fordham University. He vowed to bring it back as a premier athletic facility, and that’s exactly what he did.

Among the experiences are the sights and sounds of the New York City Marathon, including a miniature floor replica of the 26.2-mile course, an interactive touch screen with Olympic champions, and one-of-a-kind sports memorabilia from past games. The Hall Gallery, with its renowned 40-foot-long etched glass Wall of Fame, immortalizes the inductees while providing views of the New Balance Track & Field Center, where future famers both train and compete. Sander serves as president of the Armory Foundation and is on the board of directors of the New York Road Runners Club. He is the president of the NYRR Millrose Games, the country’s most famous indoor track and field meet. Sander is married to Bridget Bennett Sander and is the father of four daughters: Evan, Jessica, Emma and Phoebe. The LIttle Red LIghthouse

Today a national historic landmark, the Armory is nationally renowned as the premier indoor track and field facility in the United States, seeing more than 400,000 visits a year, and housing the National Track & Field Hall of Fame, an inspirational museum and interactive sports and fitness learning center. The hall does not just memorialize the past, but allows for discovery of what it takes be a great athlete: from how to train and what to eat to how technology has changed the sport. It even explores what the great Olympians think about during competition.

CEO of Foolish Mortals productions, Federman is a multiple Tony, Drama Desk, Drama League and Outer Critics Circle Award–winning producer.

WENDY FEDERMAN Broadway Producer

The theater industry has been a family affair. Federman’s mother and aunt performed on radio, television, movies and the Broadway stage from the 1930s through the ’60s, while her uncle, Paul Frees, was the voice of Boris Badenov, the Jolly Green Giant and the Pillsbury Doughboy. Inspired by her family’s colorful history, Federman began her own theatrical career studying dance, singing, acting, playing piano and guitar at a very young age. She earned a degree in behavioral science and management from New York University, and when her dad suddenly died, she gave up her theatrical dreams to join her brother to become the

Theater will always be her first love, and the father of a child in her son’s play group happened to own two off-Broadway theaters. With his urging she coproduced her first show, the national tour of Legends, starring Joan Collins and Linda Evans. She has not stopped producing shows since—43 to be exact. For a more in-depth look at all Federman does, go to www.foolishmortalsproductions.com. Magic in the Air “They say the neon lights are bright on Broadway, They say there’s always magic in the air,” sings George Benson in his hit “On Broadway,” a song that has a special place in Federman’s heart. “As I walk down Broadway from 57th Street and the lights turn on, I feel like I am at the center of the universe,” she says. “To think of the performances that take place in these hallowed theaters, it is an electric feeling. I absolutely love Broadway.”

CHELSEA A lack of land to build on hasn’t stopped Brookfield Property Partners from embarking on one of the most exciting projects in Manhattan. The company, which owns, develops and manages premier office properties in the United States, Canada and Australia, just had to get inventive and create some.

ERNESTO BACALZO Vice President, Construction Brookfield Property Partners

With railroad tracks leading in and out of New York’s Penn Station located 65 feet below grade, partially uncovered, a tract of land located on five acres on Ninth Avenue between West 31st and West 33rd streets and Dyer Avenue, in an area frequently referred to as the Far West Side, had been undeveloped until Brookfield came along. In order to accomplish an engineering feat, Brookfield bought a $7 million piece of complex machinery, custom designed by an Italian company specializing in bridge technology, a device called “The Launcher,” which lifted and placed precast 56-ton concrete segments piece by piece across the open railroad tracks.

Brookfield bought a $7 million piece of complex machinery, custom designed by an Italian company specializing in bridge technology. On top of this platform is where two iconic office skyscrapers—Manhattan West Office Towers—will soar as high as 67 stories, and which will be denoted as the centerpiece of Midtown West. The $4.5 billion project is a mix of commerce, lifestyle and recreation, and will also include a residential tower, a two-acre landscaped public plaza designed by High Line architects James Corner Field Operations, a five-star boutique hotel, 200,000 square feet of retail space, rooftop gardens overlooking the plaza, and proximity to the High Line. Art installations and performances of all types will be featured in the public plaza by Arts Brookfield.

PARKS The High Line The High Line, a public park built on a historic freight rail line elevated above the streets on Manhattan’s West Side, is best in the evening and at night, when the crowds have thinned and you can enjoy the lights from the neighboring buildings and all the great architecture. Plus there is such a diversity of people,” says Flagg. “Southampton’s Meadow Lane is often referred to as Billionaire Lane. Add to this, the locals who have been in Southampton for centuries— the farmers, baymen, fishermen—and you have a fascinating group.” In the summer, the colorful farm-fresh produce piled high at roadside stands can’t be beat. Plus, there are so many amazing homes in Southampton that inspire, and it’s only an hour and a half from Manhattan, another benefit.

Anthony DeVivio

ANTHONY DEVIVIO Managing Director, Hamptons Halstead Property East Hampton, NY

EAST HAMPTON Anthony DeVivio has always been praised as a highly resourceful, results-driven leader. He was recently promoted to managing Hamptons director for Halstead Property, where he is responsible for both the East Hampton and Southampton offices. For the past five years, he served as Halstead Property’s director of sales in the Harlem and Riverdale offices. In that position, DeVivio applied his extensive skills and knowledge as a former broker and manager and strengthened Halstead’s market share in these two dynamic neighborhoods. Prior to joining Corcoran, where he worked before Halstead, DeVivio rose through the financial industry for more than two decades, from financial advisor trainee to executive vice president, director of separate accounts, and president of retail for the Dreyfus Corporation. His accomplishments include restructuring the

management team, hiring more than 200 brokers to manage the assets of high-net-worth clients and improving the net flow of assets by more than $3 billion annually in less than four years. DeVivio graduated from Whittier College with a BA in political science. He is involved with a number of charities, serves on the board of directors of East Hampton Meals on Wheels and delivers meals every Tuesday. DeVivio’s favorite part of East Hampton is the center of the village. “Whether it is having a drink after getting off the beach, shopping in one of the many designer shops (Ralph Lauren has four stores), going out to dinner or enjoying an ice cream in front of Scoop Du Jour, you can’t help but admire its gentle beauty and historic cachet.”

BEACH Georgica Beach My favorite place to go is Georgica Beach. No high rises, no concession stands, just beautiful beach, dunes and the sound of ocean surf. It is the one place I can go to relax and take it down a notch. 86 Main Street, Lily Pond Lane East Hampton 631.324.4150 LUNCH Babette’s A great lunch spot with outdoor seating, great food and people watching. No reservations, so be prepared to wait a little. Best Bloody Mary in town and the best for celebrity sightings. The food is all organic and among the finest in all the Hamptons. 66 Newtown Lane East Hampton 631.329.5377 www.babettesrestaurant.com

DINNER Nick & Toni’s My go-to place for dinner. It’s fun. You can have a great dinner there with friends—and a great time as well. The next table is probably laughing as hard as your table. They change the menu with the seasons so you never get bored of the same old thing. No reservation…Get there about 6:45 p.m. and grab a seat at the bar: best seat in the place. 136 North Main Street East Hampton 631.324.3550 www.nickandtonis.com GYM Sag Harbor Gym Want to work off last night’s dinner? This is the place. They have daily rates and plenty of equipment, not to mention every exercise class you can imagine. Spin classes are $10.00.That’s right: $10.00. It is light-filled and spacious. 1 Bay Street Sag Harbor 631.725.0707 www.hamptonsgymcorp.com ART Eric Firestone Gallery If it is art you want, there is no place like East Hampton. My personal favorite is the Eric Firestone Gallery on Newtown Lane. Eric does a great job of featuring local and international artists with varying styles. He has new exhibits all the time, so don’t just go there once. Your next visit will be a completely different experience. 4 Newtown Lane East Hampton 631.604.2386 www.ericfirestonegallery.com FOOD TO GO Mary’s Marvelous Going to the beach and want to take food for the day? Mary’s Marvelous is the place. Best sandwiches made to order. They are all homemade with a unique twist. 105–107 Newtown Lane East Hampton 631.324.1055 www.marysmarvelous.com

Helen Stubbmann

MONTAUK HELEN STUBBMANN Real Estate Agent, Corcoran Montauk

Helen Stubbmann is an experienced real estate professional who offers her clientele not only an extensive knowledge of the Montauk area market, but a deep understanding of home design and building, having been in that business for 38 years as well. She and her husband operated a successful custom home building business, handling everything from new construction to complete renovations they designed, with projects mostly in Montauk and throughout Amagansett to Southampton. A 40-year Montauk resident with her husband and daughter in the same home they built 28 years ago, Stubbmann began her career in residential sales at a smaller Montauk agency before joining Allan Schneider, then Corcoran. Prior to moving to Montauk, Stubbmann lived in New York City, where she studied advertising art and design at the Fashion Institute of Technology. She subsequently worked at Macy’s Herald Square, where she produced in-house presentations for the buying line, plus spearheaded the conversion to Macy’s first online purchasing system.

OFF SEASON It is so quiet and serene in the winter, and it’s possible to go on a seal walk to these animals lounging on exposed rocks during low tide. BAKERY Montauk Bake Shoppe Features an amazing assortment of baked goods, including their famous jelly-stuffed croissants. 29 The Plaza Montauk 631.668.2439 www.montaukbakeshoppe.com LUNCH Inlet Seafood Restaurant Located at the entrance to Montauk harbor, this eatery not only features the freshest seafood around, you can watch the fishing boats come and go as welll. It’s a great spot for dinner with beautiful sunset views. 541 East Lake Drive Montauk 631.668.4272 www.inletseafood.com

DINNER Harvest on Fort Pond A family-style restaurant, their kitchen is consistently good anytime you choose to go. They offer one of the best calamari salads, and in the fall, when it is scallop season, they offer one of the best scallop dishes I have ever had. 11 South Emery Street Montauk 631.668.5574 www.harvestfortpond.com SPA Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa Offers all the amenities one could want from a spa. Plus, a rare find is its saltwater indoor pool with wide ocean views to enjoy. 290 Old Montauk Highway Montauk 631.668.2345 www.gurneysmontauk.com

Hers is a sailing family who also loves to surf (while she watches). She loves to ride horses in what she calls “the beautiful county parkland of Montauk.” One of the many reasons she loves Montauk is that it is surrounded on three sides by water, so no matter where you go, the views are amazing.
