Siegel is the former president and CEO of Sotheby’s International Realty. During his tenure he grew the firm from five offices to the fifth largest real estate brokerage business in America. He also founded Ore Hill Advisors LLC, a consultancy specializing in the international luxury property sector and cross-border transactions. For more than 20 years, Siegel has served on the board of the New York Landmarks Conservancy, where he also served as chairman for seven years. What are some of your more popular treatments, especially those that have little to no downtime? Dr. MacGregor: It really depends on the individual person and his/her goals. Ultimately, everything we do is either noninvasive or minimally invasive, so we’re experienced at driving results that meet our patient’s busy schedules. For example, injections such as Botox and Dysport are very popular to help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and provide a more refreshed look. We also use injectable fillers to restore youthful fullness and lifting to the face, and we do a lot of gentle laser resurfacing treatments such as “Clear and Brilliant,” which can improve the skin’s tone and texture through a natural healing response. Likewise, our tightening treatments gently lift the skin, helping to build new collagen while having little or no recovery time.

How is treating a visitor different than treating a local? Dr. Gmyrek: Our breadth of services allows us to customize treatments for anyone, regardless if they’re a visitor or a local. We see countless people each year who are on holiday or in town for work and want to leverage our experience to give them a little boost. Dr. Chapas: It may sound boring, but wearing sunscreen daily is critical to preventing fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots. For those that may already have sun damage, new research suggests that laser resurfacing treatments, such as the procedures we do in our office, can actually help heal sun damaged skin from the inside out. When looking at skin care products, we can help determine what ingredients are best for your skin type, but we often recommend products that contain retinol and certain, proven antioxidants that protect against environmental and lifestyle damage, such as vitamins C and E. ✦

he Waldorf Astoria is one of the most recognizable and historic hotels not only in New York City, but throughout the world. Because of its iconic status, working as a concierge at the Waldorf provides an ideal setting for both unique and over-the-top requests, and unusual lobby sightings. One memorable request dealt with a very high profile individual who was making an early television appearance the following morning. The guest inquired about an in-room spray tan at 11:30 p.m, which I was able to accommodate. Admittedly, this was not the only time I have been proven wrong when vendors come by to offer niche services and I think, “Right, like I’ll ever need this.” Another particularly odd request was that of a guest who wanted to go to a fine dining restaurant of my recommendation, but the meal had to be made with no sugar, butter, milk, starch, soy, onions, celery, carrots,

I’ve witnessed a number of odd sights in the lobby of the hotel over the years. Some that stick out would include a poodle whose entire coat of fur was dyed pink, guests changing clothes in the middle of a busy lobby with no shame or regard to censorship, and swarms of groupies waiting for a glimpse of (or a hopeful autograph from) stars or celebrities reportedly staying at the hotel.

SHOPPING Shopping is a New York staple. When people ask where to go, the obligatory first question is “What are you looking for?” If you’re looking for souvenirs, I would recommend heading to Chinatown. If you’re looking for boutique shopping, I would recommend the West Village. The droves of people in the neighborhood are neutralized by a jungle of tree-lined streets and understated yet eloquent architecture. For a more exclusive shopping experience, I would peruse the stores along Madison Avenue, or better yet, consult with a personal

WHERE TO EAT Amali (115 East 60th Street, 212.339.8363) is one of my favorite spots. It offers sustainable Mediterranean-inspired cuisine. With simple, refined concepts, Amali consistently teases the palate by showcasing nouveau but somehow familiar flavors, along with a sensational wine list. PIZZA Everyone asks for New York pizza, but each individual has a different perception of what that label really entails. I always opine that the best pizza in New York is Adrienne’s Pizzabar (54 Stone Street, 212.248.3838) located in the Financial District. Served in a one-size rectangular pan with the option of “old fashioned” or “white” and shopper at Bergdorf Goodman (754 Fifth Avenue, 212.753.7300). There are many who feel as though an afternoon there is akin to a day at a museum.

NEIGHBORHOODS My favorite neighborhood to explore is the Financial District. I always recommend to guests that they need an entire day downtown regardless of whether or not they are planning on going to the Statue of Liberty or Ellis Island. In addition to the obvious allure of Battery Park, I love Fraunces Tavern (54 Pearl Street, 212.425.1778) which is the oldest surviving building in the city. The restaurant is okay, but the museum is a historical gem and is the place where George Washington bid farewell to his troops during the Revolutionary War. Wall Street is a zoo during the week, but accessible for a stroll on weekends: Head up to Trinity Church and continue toward the new World Trade Center complex, which is beautiful and offers dining, shopping and photo opportunities.

Speaking of which, the Hamilton Grange estate is gaining popularity. It’s Alexander Hamilton’s house up on West 141st Street, filled with period pieces and stories of his life. A national memorial that has become more popular as a result of the musical, it’s an incredible place to walk through and recall our history. All of New York’s historical sites involving Alexander Hamilton have found new life with the musical’s fame.

MUSEUMS Matthew Marks Gallery. Most of our guests are eager to see the Whitney Museum downtown, but for those looking to dig deeper into New York City’s art scene, the Matthew Marks Gallery offers a fantastic collection of great contemporary works.

AVENUE speaks with Mario Nico, founder of his namesake salon, a luxurious haven in Chelsea How did you get your start in the beauty industry? I had an uncle who owned a salon in Westport, and during my teenage years I would go and help him over the summer, not really thinking this would be my profession at the time. Then one night after high school, I was walking down the street, where I found a bunch of girls outside a beauty school, and I wanted to see what it was all about. I enrolled and learned from really great teachers and editorial hairdressers, who became my mentors. I then traveled to Europe with them and became their editorial assistant on photo shoots. My experience in Europe helped pave the way for my position at Bendel. Then in 1997, I had the opportunity to open my salon in Chelsea. Where do you find inspiration for the beauty services that you offer? My inspiration is always in art, nature and people, as well as European and Mediterranean architecture. Music is always interesting as well—it takes you to a particular time and place. Can you tell us about the products offered at the salon? I have my own product line, which includes a new rose oil collection that’s meant to rehydrate your hair and boost shine. It’s our own blend that we create here—we also offer a treatment using these products, and it comes with a head, neck and shoulder massage.

Located in the heart of midtown Manhattan just across from its namesake, Carnegie Hall, the deli was a labor of love for Marian’s dad, Milton Parker, who took over the restaurant in 1976 from the original owners, who opened it in 1937.

Spring is a special season, says Harper as the weather starts to warm, flowers burst into color and the trees bloom. Plus, Harper, a true “foodie,” enjoys sitting outdoors eating and drinking at her favorite haunts. A treasure is Nocello, a welcoming restaurant where the owners are always on hand to greet its patrons with a wonderful ambience, serving the most delicious food. It’s easy to miss it as you walk by, but don’t! They will make you anything you desire and the wine list is wonderful. A nice touch is the Nocello, an after-dinner drink they serve. Another one of Harper’s neighborhood haunts is Café Fiorello, which features an antipasto bar with 32 vegetables and 12 seafood options, as well as pasta, fish, steaks and the restaurant’s signature thin-crust pizza. The North River Lobster Company, the largest floating lobster shack in New York City, sets sail every spring. Not only does Harper love the views during the cruise, she loves the seafood as well. The warmer weather also brings Harper to one of her most beloved outdoor spaces,

the Museum of Modern Art’s Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden. Gurgling fountains, rustling trees and amazing sculptures make this space one of her favorites in the city. Another favorite is the Modern, overlooking MoMA’s sculpture garden, and featuring contemporary cooking in a bright and airy setting. Central Park is another one of Harper’s respites. A walk around the reservoir is a favorite way to relax. The High Line in Chelsea is another treasure, says Harper,

built on the bed of an abandoned elevated train track, with more than 200 species of grasses, trees, perennials and shrubs now flourishing there. Across the street from her apartment, the fountain at the centerpiece of Lincoln Center Plaza dances as three concentric rings of jets shoot water into the air in a carefully orchestrated routine. Just as this water extravaganza is no ordinary fountain, spring in New York is no ordinary season.

From Shakespeare in the Park to strolling along Fifth Avenue, visiting a zoo or botanical garden, New York comes alive in the summer.

In the world of pizza, Grimaldi’s, set under the Brooklyn Bridge, is an institution, he says. Another mandatory pizza stop is Zero Otto Nove, the Italian translation of Salerno, Italy’s telephone area code, not just a pizzeria but also a sprawling trattoria on Arthur Avenue. Calvelli’s favorite is the Carminuccio, topped with basil and pancetta, made only here and in Salerno. Coney Island screams summer. Historically one of the places New Yorkers went to enjoy the beach, Coney Island was known as, “America’s playground” in the early

1900s. It has made a tremendous turnaround in the last ten years. Luna Park is a fantastic attraction that brings out the child in everyone. Fun for everyone, from 8 to 80, there are rides, games, an arcade, go-carts, restaurants and food stands, plus the historic Cyclone roller coaster. While in the area, the New York Aquarium shouldn’t be missed. It is the only aquarium in New York City and features fascinating marine life and a wonderful sea lion show. No visit to Coney Island is complete without a visit to Totonno’s Pizzeria Napolitana for a slice. Another one of Calvelli’s favorites is Tom’s Coney Island, family owned and operated since 1936, with the best pancakes around. Tavern on the Green is a Central Park icon that shouldn’t be missed, especially in the summer. Even if you don’t go for a meal, have a drink at the outdoor patio, a magical New York experience. As a lifelong New Yorker, born in the Bronx, how can you not mention the Yankees, quips Calvelli. “All my favorite New York traditions meld,” he says. “You can spend the day in the Bronx at the zoo or in a garden, have lunch on Arthur Avenue and eat some of the best Italian food west of Rome, and then end your day at Yankee Stadium, watching a world-class baseball game. The only place you can do this is in New York City!”

fifth-generation New Yorker, Elizabeth Ann Stribling-Kivlan is a graduate of the Chapin School and the College of the Holy Cross, where she studied comparative world religion. Stribling-Kivlan started working in real estate in 2001 in San Francisco, as an assistant to one of that city’s top producers. After two years on the West Coast, she returned to New York City and began her career at Stribling as a salesperson. During that time, she sold property both uptown and downtown, as well as in Brooklyn, where she worked on-site at One Brooklyn Bridge Park, the conversion of a former warehouse into 449 luxury apartments in Brooklyn Heights. Stribling-Kivlan joined the Stribling management team in 2006, as director of sales for the downtown offices. In 2010, Stribling-Kivlan became Stribling’s director of marketing and business development, overseeing the print, viral and social media of the company, as well as the global outreach efforts of the firm. In this capacity, she became the company’s “ambassador at large,” representing Stribling at the various meetings and conferences of its national and international affiliates. She was named president of Stribling & Associates, Ltd., on January 1, 2013. In running the company, she works closely with her mother, Elizabeth F. Stribling, the company’s chairman, and the entire Stribling management team.

Stribling-Kivlan’s favorite season in New York is autumn, when the air gets crisp and the trees become splashed with brilliant shades of red, yellow and orange. “There is nothing more stunning than watching the leaves begin to slowly change color within Central Park,” she says. September weather is perfect, she says, and nothing kicks off the season better

than the US Open tennis tournament. “I try to go out as many nights as possible. There is incredible energy, athleticism and pure fun.” Still warm enough to be outside, she takes advantage as much as possible. Champagne and oysters in the courtyard of the High Line Hotel is a favorite. “I am cognizant of the fact that the cold is just around the corner, and I relish being outside as much as I can.” As autumn descends on the city, more and more people return, and the energy grows. One of her favorite autumn events is the Halloween parade in Greenwich Village. “The costumes are over the top and the myriad of colors and styles make this a must, at least once, for anyone living or visiting New York.” A childhood memory she holds close is going to the Upper West Side on Thanksgiving eve to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade balloons be blown up.“ It’s amazing to watch the transformation,” she says. “And my excitement sets in as I kick off the holidays the next day.”

UPPER MANHATTAN DR. NORBERT W. SANDER JR. Physician; Winner, New York City Marathon; Founder, Armory Foundation, New York

Longtime physician to clam diggers and mussel suckers alike—local lingo for native City Islanders and mainlandborn transplants respectively—Norbert Sander is the first (and to date, only) New Yorker to win the New York City Marathon. This was in 1974, when the event was run in Central Park. An internist specializing in family medicine, a newly degreed Dr. Sander hung his shingle on City Island, where he maintained a practice for many years. Running is a major part of his life. The Fort Washington Armory, with its huge, vaulted ceiling and 96,000 square feet of wooden floor, had been the New York City’s premier arena for indoor track from about 1910 to the mid-1980s. Time and neglect, however, took their toll. Sander has extraordinary memories of competing on the armory’s original wooden track as a student at Fordham Prep, in the Bronx and later Fordham University. He vowed to bring it back as a premier athletic facility, and that’s exactly what he did.

Among the experiences are the sights and sounds of the New York City Marathon, including a miniature floor replica of the 26.2-mile course, an interactive touch screen with Olympic champions, and one-of-a-kind sports memorabilia from past games. The Hall Gallery, with its renowned 40-foot-long etched glass Wall of Fame, immortalizes the inductees while providing views of the New Balance Track & Field Center, where future famers both train and compete. Sander serves as president of the Armory Foundation and is on the board of directors of the New York Road Runners Club. He is the president of the NYRR Millrose Games, the country’s most famous indoor track and field meet. Sander is married to Bridget Bennett Sander and is the father of four daughters: Evan, Jessica, Emma and Phoebe. The LIttle Red LIghthouse

Today a national historic landmark, the Armory is nationally renowned as the premier indoor track and field facility in the United States, seeing more than 400,000 visits a year, and housing the National Track & Field Hall of Fame, an inspirational museum and interactive sports and fitness learning center. With railroad tracks leading in and out of New York’s Penn Station located 65 feet below grade, partially uncovered, a tract of land located on five acres on Ninth Avenue between West 31st and West 33rd streets and Dyer Avenue, in an area frequently referred to as the Far West Side, had been undeveloped until Brookfield came along. In order to accomplish an engineering feat, Brookfield bought a $7 million piece of complex machinery, custom designed by an Italian company specializing in bridge technology, a device called “The Launcher,” which lifted and placed precast 56-ton concrete segments piece by piece across the open railroad tracks.

On top of this platform is where two iconic office skyscrapers—Manhattan West Office Towers—will soar as high as 67 stories, and which will be denoted as the centerpiece of Midtown West. The $4.5 billion project is a mix of commerce, lifestyle and recreation, and will also include a residential tower, a two-acre landscaped public plaza designed by High Line architects James Corner Field Operations, a five-star boutique hotel, 200,000 square feet of retail space, rooftop gardens overlooking the plaza, and proximity to the High Line.
