DEAR READERS, WELCOME TO OUR December issue. One of the things I love best about my job is the collaboration I have with our cover subjects. We want them to feel they have been well-represented in the magazine. So when the artist Jennifer Rubell called me to say that she would like to do something with food on her cover, I tentatively agreed. Jennifer came up with the concept of using bread in her shoot. It was a bit of a teaser for her next work, debuting during Art Basel Miami, which will use bread and butter as metaphors for love and devotion.

I am so pleased with the results, I have to thank our fashion director, Emily Barnes, for her amazing ability

to make everyone look their best in this magazine, whether clad in a ballgown or throwing a stack of bread rolls in the air.

The article on Jennifer is outstanding as well, as writer Janet Allon reveals a fascinating and talented artist who is determined to challenge our senses with her art.

As much as I love beautiful photographs, I’m always intrigued by the behind-the-scenes stories. I adore those little tidbits that instruct you on how a certain shot was achieved. To that end, I was thrilled to have the chance to hear how the ultra-talented Todd Eberle came to photograph Princess Gloria Thurn und Taxis’ colossal palace.

As exciting and extraordinary as the princess’ story is, equally interesting is how Todd met her and how his wonderful photographs give the reader unpresented access to such an amazing place.

As we head down to Miami for the second time, I’m so excited to return to this happening city, which at least during Art Basel year attracts an intensely glamorous group of people from around the world. To paraphrase Bob Colacello in last month’s issue, people now follow the art world and auctions the way they used to follow the horses and couture. Not only is it an exciting kaleidoscope of parties, art and cocktails, it’s also blissfully warm just when the winter temperatures in New York have just begun to descend into their wintry depths. It’s a nonstop couple of days down there, but the vivacity and energy of the city makes it all worth it.

INTO THE JUNGLE Two charities, Elephant Family and Space for Giants, hosted a fun-filled art exhibition in partnership with British parenting company Maclaren at the Angel Orensanz Foundation. Two floors of art were displayed, featuring contemporary works by 25 renowned artists. CHEERS TO THE YEAR Reminiscing about the most magical moments of 2015

D

ecember in New York sparkles, charms and warms like no other time of year. By now you may be immersed in cocktail parties, shopping confusion and frenzy, the improbable but momentarily allowed riot of red, green, silver, blue and everything that glistens, and mostly—hopefully—a special moment with your friends and family. Till then, though . . . some memories of the most magical moments that led up to now.

Magic and castles go hand in hand, especially when the occasions are so glorious. The first event, at that rare and wonderful place, California’s Hearst Castle, for the 7th Annual Hearst Castle Preservation Foundation Benefit Weekend, hosted by William Randolph Hearst’s granddaughter Anne and her husband, Jay McInerney. While the castle is the biggest revenue producing California state park, it needs to raise money to restore and protect its artifacts, and that’s what this weekend does. Spearheaded by Anne’s California friends—Edith and Joe Tobin, Justine and Robert Bloomingdale, Kathy and Greg Hampton, Katrina and Michael Berube and Paula and Anthony Peck—she was also joined by East Coast fans, including Robert Zimmerman, Elisabeth de Kergorlay, Felicia Taylor, and Zang Toi (who was fetching in his formal white kilt), and folks from further out like Pierre Lagrange (London, the home of his bespoke menswear company Huntsman; said clothes hung beautifully on Tony Peck’s shoulders, as they once did on his dad, Gregory) and Remar Sutton (Denmark). History and splendor abounded: I stayed in the Senator’s House (WRH’s father was, in fact, a senator), we explored a fraction of the 425,000 James Rothschild and Nicky Hilton Rothschild acres, communed with the seals and zebras (descendants of his original menagerie), swam in the Roman Pool, walked under the Pergola, kayaked off the site’s 50 miles of oceanfront property, dined formally in the Refectory, danced on the Terrace, hoedowned at the Dairy Barn, and finished up with a concert

by Judy Collins that had us tearing up, singing along and worshipping her better-than-ever talent.

My tiara had traveled just weeks before to perhaps the most beautiful wedding I have ever attended. Nicky Hilton married James Rothschild in a small, elegant, heartfelt and magnificent ceremony in his London home. There was no press allowed (thus my late but finally allowed report), though you may have seen pictures, as the paparazzi Justine and Robert Bloomingdale oozed through hedges and crammed the pavement outside Claridge’s.

Aidan Barclay and his wife, Fizzy, started the week with a very small dinner at the Ritz (he happens to own it) for Kathy and Rick Hilton, proud parents of the bride. Next up, an elegant cocktail party at Spencer House. James’s mother, Anita Guinness Rothschild Wigan, graciously introduced the out-of-towners to all. I had a great chat with her sister, Sabrina, when I spied one of my idols. “Oh my, isn’t that Tom Stoppard?” I exclaimed. “Yes, in fact, it is! He’s my husband!” she said. And so it went, the beautiful, the titled, the accomplished (and that was just immediate family): it would be tawdry to list the names, because all eyes Paula and Anthony Peck and hearts were on the lovely couple. Nicky glided down the aisle at Kensington Palace’s Orangery in a dazzling Valentino Haute Couture ivory, guipure lace gown, surrounded by her bridesmaids in icy blue chiffon Dennis Basso dresses, and precious flower girls in Marie-Chantal. Her cousin, Whitney Davis, sang a flawless, a capella “Lean on Me”, followed by the nonreligious service—meaningful, modern and memorable. At the flower-filled, glowing tent afterwards, Rick Hilton toasted to his daughter, and new son-in-law, who when asked about, Rick says “I can honestly say he’s terrific!” At each table were pictures of the couple, cleverly placed by James’s best friend (and best man) from childhood. Finally, the groom’s toast was so tender and adoring of his bride, it brought tears to our eyes, and there Elisabeth de Kergorlay and was not a daughter’s mother there, who didn’t wish for the same loving, fairy-tale Felicia Taylor wedding for her own little girl. ✦ HEARST CASTLE: ©PATRICK MCMULLAN

More than 1,000 real estate professionals turned out for CS Talks to hear from renowned architects, developers, designers, and some of the brightest minds in the industry.

“The goal of CS Talks was to offer the brokerage community a totally new level of insight into development,” said Kelly Kennedy Mack, President of Corcoran Sunshine. “CS Talks offered extraordinary access to each property, but also aimed to entertain and educate.” Mack added, “The events were so well received we are now planning the next series, with ideas for new panels,

Here, we asked the host with the most for some tips on how to make a soiree stand out in a sea of seasonal events. Take a look at his fail-proof tips: What are the three key ingredients to the perfect holiday party?

I am a firm believer in a house cocktail or three. Set up a DIY cocktail bar with pitchers of different drinks and a variety of garnishes. Guests can gather at the bar and doctor up their drinks to their liking, which will get them drinking and interacting. Secondly, If decorations seem daunting, keep it natural. Invest in some fresh greenery that looks festive and gives your home some color and a fresh fragrance of the season. Don’t forget the mistletoe! Finally, lighting! Your guests spent a lot of time on their look for your occasion, so don’t destroy it with bad overhead lighting. Always use the dimmer.

If you don't have a dimmer, skip the overhead lighting and go with multiple lamps.

Korns owned an Army-Navy store on the corner, and needed space to stash their massive inventory of bunk beds, dummy grenades, and other Army surplus supplies.

In the half century since, SoHo has been transformed from a run-down, post-industrial district to a glamorous, world-renowned shopping destination where home buyers pay millions for lofts in 19th-century cast-iron buildings or apartments in condos like 27 Wooster, at Grand Street, the penthouse of which is in contract for $28.5 million.

Last summer the Korns listed 125–127 Grand for sale with James P. Nelson and Robert Burton of Cushman & Wakefield with an asking price of $25 million. But for the Korns, the payoff in restoring the buildings—two storefronts with six lofts upstairs—has been more than financial. When the façade of No. 127 was stripped of 18 layers of paint, the ghost image of a painted banner bearing the words “Grand Street Hall” appeared above the second-floor windows.

“It was one of those feelings of the hairs on the back of your neck sticking up,” Nate Korn recalled, “and you say, ‘My God, the building had a former life, and there it is, right on the façade.’”

The discovery sent Mr. Korn’s wife, Deborah Peacock, digging into period newspapers, which crackled with accounts of the tumultuous and long-forgotten goings-on at Grand Street Hall and 125 Grand: sword attacks, tense union meetings, cockfights, gatherings of indignant Irish organizations after a famous riot, a police raid to arrest girls for “exhibiting themselves” for artists, and a devastating fire witnessed by 30,000.

No. 125 Grand was completed in 1826, according to the city Landmarks Preservation Commission, with No. 127 built in a modified Greek Revival style nine years later.

(It’s one of only two surviving period Greek Revival structures in the SoHo-Cast Iron Historic District.) Both buildings were originally dwellings, but city records show

N

ew York City reinvents itself so frequently that its streetscape seems at times like an urban pentimento, a reused old canvas on which wildly different incarnations of the city have been painted one on top of the other. Just peel back the top layer, the buildings seem to promise, and an earlier version of New York will be revealed.

For the family of Nate Korn, a lawyer, this kind of surprise revelation happened quite literally as they were restoring a 19th-century building in SoHo that had been in their family for half a century.

Around 1961, Mr. Korn’s parents, Dorothy and Emanuel Korn, bought 125–127 Grand Street, a pair of adjacent, four-story brick buildings with cast-iron storefronts between Broadway and Crosby Street. The 72 | AVENUE MAGAZINE • AVENUE ON THE BEACH • DECEMBER 2015

that in the early 1840s a blacksmith named James Mulligan rented No. 125, apparently using it as his workshop. In 1844, Mulligan bought the building for $9,000, and three years later he purchased No. 127.

Around 1850, the assessed value of both properties soared while neighboring values remained more stable, suggesting that Mulligan’s structures were markedly improved if not replaced with new buildings entirely. It is possible that the brick dwellings were outfitted with their cast-iron storefronts at this time, as cast iron was then coming into vogue in New York and the formerly stable residential neighborhood was becoming more commercial.

That same month, Grand Street Hall began appearing in the city press as the site of meetings of workers joining the city’s burgeoning labor movement. In March 1853, the hall was “crowded to suffocation,” according to The New York Herald, as waiters organized a union. At a subsequent meeting, the paper reported, an African-American worker from the Irving House promised, “on behalf of the colored waiters, a hearty cooperation with the whites.” When hundreds of waiters walked off the job after their employers refused them a raise from about twelve dollars a month to eighteen, Grand Street Hall was the striking workers’ rendezvous point.

Mulligan, the owner of 125–127 Grand, had a soft spot for charity. In 1855, the Irish Aid Society was formed at No. 125, with Mulligan as president, “for the purpose of forwarding indigent Irish emigrants from the over-crowded City to the wide West.”

But if progressive causes had a way of finding Mulligan, so did trouble. In 1846, he engaged in a bar brawl with Patrick McCarty, a rival blacksmith from Mercer Street. After Mulligan apparently snubbed his competitor by not inviting him to drink, The Herald reported, “McCarty took up a tumbler and threw it at Mulligan, inflicting a severe wound upon his right cheek; whereupon, the compliment was returned by throwing some four or five tumblers at McCarty . . . to the mutual injury of both parties.”

The brawling wasn’t always so localized.

Street Hall in July 1853 to draft a statement asserting their innocence in the recent Ninth Ward Riot on Independence Day, when 500 marching Hibernians had an altercation with a stagecoach driver that devolved into a bloody melee between Irish immigrants and native-born Americans. The openly nativist Ninth Ward police, the Hibernians charged, had rushed into the fray and battered only the Irish with their batons.

brownstone. Brooks Brothers moved to the corner of Grand in 1858, followed quickly by the construction across the street of an extravagantly adorned edifice for Lord & Taylor. Hotels and theaters abounded as well. But some of the surrounding area was a red light district, while Five Points, the Irish-dominated slum notorious for its squalor and mayhem, lay just a few blocks southeast.

The most “sanguinary conflict” involving Mulligan’s buildings came in 1858, when The New York Times reported that a sword-wielding maniac named Teddy Tooley, a dancer at “a low place called the ‘Arcade Saloon,’ No. 127 Grand-street,” cut three men “in a most barbarous manner around the face and head.”

Tooley then fled into “another den called the Grand-street House,” where Mulligan allegedly “did all he could to try to effect the escape of Tooley,” who was ultimately captured.

Mulligan, taking umbrage, wrote the Times to deny that he had helped Tooley and to protest the reporter’s characterization of his house as “a den, thereby reflecting not only on my character as a peaceable citizen, but also casting an imputation on my house, in which for the last thirty years I have carried on a legitimate and respectable business . . . [in] the arduous trade of horse-shoeing.”

Disaster struck in 1876, when a catastrophic fire ignited at 125 Grand and burned through the entire block bounded

by Broadway and Grand, Howard, and Crosby Streets. Three firefighters died, crushed by the collapsing walls of the Continental Hotel, and at one point it was feared that the heart of the city would burn. Several occupants of 125–127 Grand sustained damage to their property: a restaurant, a cloth dealer, a hat manufacturer, a dealer in dress trimmings, and a fur company.

By the time the Korns bought the two buildings in the 1960s, 127 Grand had served both as a luncheonette and a grocery, and in 1970 the Korns converted the three top stories into artist’s lofts, renting them to the likes of Arturo Di Modica, creator of the bronze Charging Bull sculpture that has stood at Bowling Green since 1989. “The building was kind of scary, with very creaky floors,” said Leil Lowndes, a writer who moved into No. 127 in 1970 with Ken Dewey, an artist who created large installations in their loft. “And it was a frightening neighborhood, totally deserted except for Orthodox Jewish fabric shops. There were no street lights.”

Both buildings were showing their age, and the floors of No. 125 ultimately became so slanted, Mr. Korn said, that the old dog of one of the tenants taught himself never to lie with his body oriented north-to-south, because when he did he rolled sideways. To correct this problem as well as a structural issue that Mr. Korn said had destabilized the rear of No. 125, the Korns performed a major restoration of the building. As part of the work, they removed scores of bricks at the rear, cleaned and numbered each one, and returned them to their original locations.

“I could have abandoned this thing and sold it,” said Mr. Korn, who mortgaged his home to help pay for the restoration. “But I felt I had hurt it, and I wanted to put it back, almost in a moral sense. I’m really just a caretaker of an antiquity that was around before me and will be there after me.” ✦

“I FEEL LIKE MY WHOLE LIFE IS ATONEMENT FOR THE VELVET ROPE.” —JENNIFER RUBELL n December, Jennifer Rubell will do something she has done every year for the past 13, a number that actually blows the 45-year-old artist’s mind a little bit. She will serve up breakfast at Miami Art Basel. But this will be no ordinary breakfast—it never is. Her annual installation/performance is a must-attend artistic happening, a take on breakfast that gives a whole new spin on the morning meal.

The menu is familiar enough: it’s bread and butter. For three hours a man and a woman, a couple whom Rubell actually knows and who are in real life engaged to be married, will serve one another. “The man has a hypermasculine role involving the bread, the woman a hyperfeminine role involving the butter,” Jennifer says tantalizingly over an early lunch at Keith McNally’s Cherche Midi in SoHo. “It is about condensing an everyday gesture over the course of a lifetime, which adds up to love and devotion.”

Which just so happens to be the name of the piece: Love and Devotion. “I’m very into this physical form of love . . . this concretization of love,” Rubell says, tucking into her soup. “It’s the kind of love you can hold in your hand.”

It’s rather disarming, this talk about love, food, devotion and the accumulated profundity of repetitive simple acts.

We’ve just met and already we’re discussing the nature of love and marriage. But there you have it. Jennifer Rubell is not exactly like anyone else you’ve met. And her art, which carries some echoes of Duchamp, Warhol and Koons, as well as the “happenings” of the Sixties, is also entirely different from all of them, and unlike anyone else’s out there. It often involves food (but not always), can be quite shocking and funny (a naked nutcracker mannequin that cracks nuts in its vagina) and almost always eggs the viewer on to participate somehow. It’s safe to say that no one does what the iconoclastic Rubell does and what she does seems to come from a deeply authentic, sometimes painful place. But more on her art in a moment.

First, there’s her lineage.

From a close-knit family of art collectors and competitive tennis players, Jennifer grew up on the Upper East Side with parents Don and Mera and barely older brother Jason. The Rubells have played an important role in transforming the art world in the past 50 or so years, something they almost certainly did not set out to do. They simply followed their passion and collected edgy contemporary art, all while working away, Don as a doctor, Mera first as a teacher then in real estate, and raising their two kids. But seeking out artists and collecting their pieces was the family’s avocation. “The house was always packed with art,” Jennifer says of her youth. “Artists were always coming over for dinner. My mother was always cooking pasta for them.”

Among those artists, Keith Haring, whom the Rubells pretty much discovered and supported until his death from AIDS. Through Haring, they met Jean-Michel Basquiat. They were tapping into the gritty contemporary art world of the ‘70s, before it was the superglamorous Art World of today. “It was a much smaller fringe scene,” Jason Rubell, who now runs the family’s Miami-based hotel business, recounts. “Everyone knew one another.” The Rubells’ budget dictated they collect young and emerging artists, and, as is now clear, they also had an uncanny eye for talent.

Somewhere along the line—Jason dates it at around 1983—the contemporary art word began to morph into the glamor-filled social scene it has become today. Artists like Julian Schnabel, David Salle and Basquiat began to be featured in New York magazine as emerging stars. The Rubells, just by virtue of doing their thing, became major players. The social world and the art world began to intersect.

IF YOU’RE NOT INFORMED, YOU’RE ALSO PROVOKED.” —MARIO BATALI ome of that had something to do with Jennifer Rubell’s famous uncle, Steve Rubell, the night-life impresario best known for Studio 54. Jennifer was very close to her uncle Steve, speaking to him almost nightly and going on vacations with him. He was, she says, like “ a second father to her.” She shared his deep interest in social interactions, and his sensitivity, and at the age 7 she experienced the crowds parting for her at the entrance of the nightclub, which embarrassed her and deepened her empathy for those left out. Steve Rubell, who died when Jennifer was 19, had sometimes told her that he’d never let himself into Studio 54, a statement she has said she found rather heartbreaking. “I feel like my whole life is atonement for the velvet rope.” she told W magazine at one point. She has been trying to include people ever since.

Her reflections on her uncle are far more intimate than the scene-maker he is famous for being. “My uncle was very attuned to humans of all kinds. He had a special relationship to every human,” she says. “He was a real New Yorker.”

The same could be said of his Jennifer, whom her friend artist Sarah Morris calls a consummate insider. The two met while working for Jeff Koons, back when Jennifer was still in school at Harvard. “She kind of adopted me,” says Morris.

“She knows everybody and has since she was a kid.”

Steve Rubell may be best known for Studio 54, but he went on to open the Palladium, creating events and spaces in collaboration with artists like Haring, who created the huge backdrop in the ballroom, furthering the intersection between art and the social world. Brother Jason sees a through-line from the “happenings” that Rubell created to Jennifer’s art, which always invites some engagement with the viewer. “She always related to art as an event,” he says.

“Her work is always interactive with the viewer. It bring people into it.”

Don and Mera Rubell moved to Miami, where their private collection became a museum, the Rubell Family Collection and Contemporary Arts Foundation, which boasts some 6,800 works by 831 artists. It is one of the most ambitious private collections in the country, and is located in a former Drug Enforcement Administration warehouse, which real-estatesavvy Mera spotted and the Rubells bought in 1993; it can be found in the once crime-ridden Wynwood Arts District of Miami. Naturally, it helped transform the area into an artistic hothouse. When Art Basel came looking for a winter home in a warmer climate, the Rubells helped, and before long Art Basel Miami became a must-attend staple of social and art collecting calendars in January.

This condensed Reader’s Digest version of the Rubell family history doesn’t quite explain how Jennifer came to be the artist she is today, but it will have to do. She studied art, sociology and writing at Harvard, then spent a year learning to make really great food at the Culinary Institute of America. She spent ten years writing about food, and had a stint working in the family’s hospitality business, which is based in Miami. For a while, she recounts, she took it upon herself to write “anonymous love letters” to hotel guests. “That way they would arrive feeling loved and like their life mattered to someone,” she says. “For whatever reason, I feel the pain of other people’s loneliness. I’m very sensitive to the state of being a human being, and especially the feelings between people.” This hypersensitivity, she points out, is only a problem if it remains unharnessed, and art allows her to make some use of it.

Loneliness was the obvious theme of a recent show of her work titled Not Alone at the Stephen Friedman Gallery in London. The Guardian called it the “most Freudian exhibit ever.” Gallerygoers were invited to hold a glass baby, which Jennifer created to weigh what her now 3-year-old son weighed at birth. The piece is a powerful metaphor for the terror new parents feel about their infants. One room featured huge portraits of Rubell naked on a horse, and a dark room where visitors were urged to take off their clothes as they watched a film of Rubell similarly naked. “It was literally giving people the opportunity to be naked and be okay,” she says. The point of that, and other pieces, she says is to invite people to “enter into an emotional experience that is better than life. It’s clearer and more intense.”

“JENNIFER’S MIND HAS A KIND OF FERTILITY THAT JUST KIND OF BREEDS THIS SUPER-ABUNDANCE OF SPIRIT.” —ARNOLD LEHMAN, FORMER DIRECTOR OF THE BROOKLYN MUSEUM er brother admits that her Jennifer’s art can make people both feel very welcome, and very uncomfortable—especially, he thinks, men. One of the paradoxes of Rubell’s art is that while it often seems to derive from intensely feminine experiences, its expression can be almost brutally masculine. Another is that while it can put people on the spot, it is also incredibly generous and inviting. “There’s always a utility in her work,” says Jennifer’s friend and fellow artist Rashid Johnson. “I think that is generous. The work gives you something back. It gives you the opportunity to interact with it.” As a friend, Johnson says, Rubell is incredibly level-headed and practical—not at all the kind of head-in-the-clouds artist one might expect.

Another friend, chef Mario Batali, gobbles her work up, appropriate since it so often involves food. “Her art puts people slightly out of their comfort zone,” he says. “If you’re informed, you’re provoked. If you’re not informed, you’re also provoked.” Batali, friends with Rubell since he met her while she was working as an intern at the Food Network, brought his two sons to the Brooklyn Museum annual Artists’ Ball a few years back, an extraordinary event that Rubell catered and created and people still talk about to this day. “There were 800 roasted rabbits with their heads still on, and two carving knives, and you didn’t really know what to do,” Batali recounts, the charge of the experience still evident. “So we started carving them up. My sons were juggling rabbit heads.” She sets up a kind of “no rules game,” he says. Dessert featured a giant Andy Warhol piñata head, 20 feet in diameter, and offered guests plastic bats to strike it. “My sons were the first to break through and spill the Hostess treats,” Batali says, a certain delight in his voice.

The then-director of Brooklyn Museum, Arnold Lehman, called the whole event, a kind of performance piece that you could eat, a spectacular success. There were “drinking paintings” with faucets pouring vodka and whisky, enormous hanging heads of cheese that dripped onto your crackers. Everything was on a kind of massive scale. “She must have gotten about 3,000 Twinkies for the piñata,” Lehman says. “It was such fun. I can’t even imagine what goes on in Jennifer’s mind. It has a kind of fertility that just kind of breeds this super-abundance of spirit.”

And then there are her parties.

Rubell is known as a fabulous hostess, and says that up until a recent move to an apartment in Gramercy Park with her 9-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son, she hosted dinner parties about once a week. Her guests, she says, are an assortment. She is drawn to literary types more than artists, who she thinks have become almost too polished and media-savvy in this artist-as-superstar age. “I have a type,” she says, but struggles to define it, except to say that her friends are always somehow special. “It’s not always the most well-known people. There’s no agenda at my parties. I’m often drawn to shy, awkward people. A new table that seats 14 will likely jumpstart her weekly dinner party habit again, she thinks.

“Having people over is the opposite of my work,” she says, intriguingly.

Chances are whatever is on the menu, it will be like nothing you’ve ever had. ✦

airy tales do come true: Todd Eberle can attest to that. “My biggest surprise in preparing this book about Princess Gloria [Countess von SchönburgGlauchau] was that every fantasy I’ve ever had about fairy tales and princesses living in castles and wearing tiaras and attending balls with kings and queens came true,” says the New York photographer upon the publication last November of his newest book, House of Thurn und

Taxis (Rizzoli). “I didn’t know such a thing existed. My original working title was Fairy Tales, but that was a bit too campy and disingenuous. What happened, what’s shown in these pages, it’s all real. It’s still taking place. My pictures tell a true, living story.” As the countess, aka “Princess TNT,” said during the making of the book, “Darling, you are a picture machine.”

Eberle’s very trajectory as one of the world’s most sought-after and visionary photographers of people and buildings reads much like a fairy tale. While talking with him atop the penthouse terrace office he shares with his partner, Richard Pandiscio; later in their apartment in the Jean Nouvel building in Chelsea; and while driving uptown in their Tesla, Eberle reveals himself to be both aware that his life might a kind of fairy tale, and also bewildered by his good fortune. However, unlike some members of royalty, including his latest subject, 92 | AVENUE MAGAZINE • AVENUE ON THE BEACH • DECEMBER 2015

“It’s a contemporary art book, it’s a history of interior decoration, it’s German history, it’s European history, it’s royal history, it’s TNT’s history.

There’s no reference for a book like this.”

Princess Gloria, he didn’t marry into the role. His royal stature as a photographer of some of the biggest personalities of our time for some of the biggest publications is one that he earned wholly through his own manipulations of lens and shutter. No court intrigue required.

Once upon a time, there was a young boy who sat in his bedroom in a nondescript postwar house in the central Florida town of Howey-in-the-Hills, staring at the covers from People magazine he had cut out and pasted to his walls. There, spotlit by the strong Florida sun, were David Bowie, Liza Minnelli, Diana Ross, the Carpenters and others of the era, people who filled the young Eberle’s walls and his imagination. Every week, when Eberle and his mother went grocery shopping, she would buy him the latest issue of the celebrity weekly.

“I was obsessed with People,” he says. “I noticed after a while that some pictures were better than others. I remember the first time I saw a photo credit for one of the cover photographs—Francesco Scavullo. I think it was his photo of Donna Summer. And I realized then that there was a talent to photography. Ever since I learned what the camera can do, I’ve always gone after everything I’ve ever wanted through my photography.”

For a man who has lived at the White House with the Clintons, photographing Hillary; commuted to Marfa, Texas, to capture the life, sculptures and home of Donald Judd; partied with and photographed the likes of Jeff Koons and Andy Warhol; and has now captured the domestic life of Princess Gloria, Eberle, it would seem, has attained everything he could want. His reign as one of the photographers of our era continues.

Gloria’s ascent to her actual royal throne is a well-documented one. When she was a mere lass of twenty, she met and married Prince Johannes Thurn und Taxis in 1980, he thirty-three years her sen ior. On one of their first dates, the prince took her to his 500-room Bavarian schloss (and still counting, since the princess herself admits to still finding new rooms). Although there was no empire or loyal subjects to reign over, she did inherit the responsibility of caring for what might be Europe’s largest private residence, its rooms filled with treasures new, old and ancient. Their marriage was a happy and real one, in that there was a mutual love.

“What impresses me, too, is that she went to business school, earned degrees and figured it all out,” says Eberle. “She runs an empire now. She’s a real businessperson dealing with her various real estate holdings and the like. At the breakfast table, I’d see people bring her documents to sign in leather dossiers. She’s very formal in her business side.”

“We ended up hanging out with Mick and Gloria at an after-party,” says Eberle. “Then I ran into her at the Venice Biennale at a party Larry Gagosian held at some palazzo. I was invited to her schloss, and even though I arrived at midnight, she spent three hours consuming my monograph. She went through it in the most interested way I’ve ever seen anyone look at my work.”

Soon thereafter, Eberle would be making regular weeklong trips to the schloss, exploring and photographing the contents of its rooms. CURATING For Roya Sachs, an artistic eye was inevitable

alking into the home of Roya Sachs in a light, airy loft downtown, you are immediately overwhelmed with beauty. The woman herself is captivating—with smooth olive skin, electric green eyes and enviably shiny hair—but she also, clearly, has an impeccable eye. Her walls are covered in eclectic artwork and objects that could only have been gathered and placed by someone with her own distinct taste. Art has always been an integral part of Roya Sachs’ upbringing, so it comes as no surprise that her affinity for the category goes well beyond her own walls: It’s in her blood. She is a granddaughter of Gunter Sachs, a famous photographer, filmmaker and art collector, and the daughter of Rolf and Maryam Sachs, respectively a renowned artist and furniture designer who does museum and gallery shows, and an established author who has written novels, research and art books. Sachs explains that art was seamlessly integrated into her life from a young age: “It’s second nature to me,” she says of her deep-rooted appreciation and knowledge of the arts, even if there was the occasional sacrifice for the sake of aesthetics: “I grew up in the most uncomfortable living room in the world,” Sachs says. “My parents collect chairs; there were always these chairs in the living room made out of cardboard and metal. That was something of which I was always aware.”

Working separately and together, her parents collaborated on the project called The Wild Empire, where they installed a camera and took a photo of a mountain landscape in Bavaria every 10 minutes and 31 seconds throughout 2004. From the 50,000 photos, they curated an exhibit and published a book documenting the detailed fluctuations of nature over the course of a year. Their lifestyle and dedication to the arts instilled an appreciation for creative process in their children from an early age Roya, born in Munich and raised in London, gets more than her artistic tendencies from her parents: Her attachment to multiple cultures begins with the fact that her mother was born in Iran. “I do feel very Persian, which I love because we grew up celebrating the Persian New Year and eating the food; my whole family’s from there; it’s a part of my life, but a part I’m missing, which will hopefully be fulfilled at some point,” she explains. Then she also grew up in a creative and international environment, moved around throughout her childhood, and has had a lifetime of exposure to various cultures. She attended the Le Rosey school in Switzerland, before moving to New York City and enrolling at New York University, where she followed in her family members’ footsteps and studied art history. Shortly after graduating, she decided to curate her first show in 2013 called Finding Absence with photographers she met at the International Center of Photography. Next, she interned in MoMA’s curatorial department of painting and sculpture.

Her biggest and most important influence comes from experiential art and large-scale installations, like the work of Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson titled The Weather Project at London’s Tate Modern, as well as shows such as Marina Abramović’s The Artist is Present. “It was very much about having this bodily experience,” recounts Sachs of Abramović’s exhibition.

“You know when you walk into a space and all of your senses are heightened? It smells different, the taste of the air, the energy in the room.

I like it’s inevitability, something that’s inescapable. That’s what I was completely drawn to; the power that it has on people. Even if they don’t want to be a part of it, they are.”

After MoMA, Sachs did a quick stint in the Sotheby’s marketing department before deciding to strike out on her own. While writing for various art publications, she already had a few artists in mind with whom she wanted to work. Her specialty in performance art happened very organically and her way of working involves not only curating, but handson elements like directing a performance. “I like to create something; to bring things together . . . at this point I am more of a creative director, because I am not only curating the shows but also help with bringing performance to life.” she explains.

Her most recent project was working with the Elephant Family charity on curating their Elephants Forever exhibition, which took place October 22 in New York City. The exhibition and the subsequent auction raised more than $1 million for the charity started by the late Mark Shand—a champion for elephant protection in Asia. Working with a big budget and with wellknown artists—such as Rob Pruitt, Tracey Emin, and David Yarrow— Elephants Forever was the biggest project that Sachs has done to date. When asked what she liked most about the experience, she says: “Having a space come alive, it was about creating the experience where I took people out of their comfort zones and allowed them to explore and have a very sensory journey through understanding art.” During the kickoff party preceding the auction, Sachs gave VIPs the ultimate first glimpse at the inventory in a completely unconventional presentation. She used multi-media décor—including real bamboo branches and palm trees, coconuts and bananas in mid-fruitation, and high-tech elements like Google Earth virtual reality masks that transported guests to Samburu and overhead projection light elephants. A DJ spun and Bernardino Femminielli gave a live performance.Weaved in, amongst all the sensory stimulation, were the artworks set to be auctioned later that week.

Never one to rest on her laurels, Sachs is already looking into the future. With two upcoming projects in South America with LAMB Arts in London’s Mayfair, as well as working with Gertrude, an art salon, on a book called Regram for which she is curating work from important contemporary artists, she is busier than ever. Mostly she is looking forward to pushing boundaries and exploring new media to curate work that combines art, music performance and technology.

“My specialty has become performance and technology art. I want to see that grow, and that is what my focus is on, creating experience by bringing together ballet dancers, painters and opera singers. As an independent curator I love the idea of collaboration. Tri-City Champion A conversation with the generous and visionary philanthropist Adrienne Arsht

A

drienne Arsht is an exemplary business leader and philanthropist, particularly in the three cities she calls home: Washington, D.C., Miami and New York. Her $30 million contribution to Miami’s Performing Arts Center—now the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts— in 2008 strengthened the institution’s promotion of the arts for all ages and cultures. She has also been a key donor to and supporter of Lincoln Center for Performing Arts—of which she is a vice chairman and where a stage in Alice Tully Hall bears her name. In D.C., Arsht is a trustee of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, where the Adrienne Arsht Musical Theater Fund supports the center’s annual musical theater series.

In addition to her activity in the performing arts world, in 2013 Arsht created and funded the Adrienne Arsht Latin America Center at the Atlantic Council, one of Washington’s top think tanks. The center has deepened her commitment to Latin America, with a strategic focus on trade and investment, natural resources and energy, security, democracy and human rights, and in developing human capital and entrepreneurship.

In addition, she works with the Arsht-Cannon Fund in Delaware, which provides grants to improve the quality of life in her home state. It focuses on the needs, assets and issues of Hispanic families by funding nonprofit organizations’ programs that result in opportunities to achieve optimal physical health and mental well-being, early and lifelong continuing education, and leadership roles in their communities.

Arsht’s philanthropic activity has worked to shape some of the most loved and vital institutions in her three cities and beyond. Here, AVENUE has a conversation with Arsht—exploring the methods and messages behind her generous giving.

AVENUE: Being called a philanthropist sounds terribly grand. What does that name mean to you?

Adrienne Arsht: Well, I do think it sounds grand, but it’s also rewarding. Whatever the Greek etymology of the word is, I’d define it as doing good, making a difference.

I think a lot of people are philanthropists. For example, medical volunteers with Doctors Without Borders perform eye surgery: they’re philanthropists. I don’t think philanthropy should only be defined by money, but it is.

AVENUE: Tell us where your charitable notions originated?

AA: My father always told me, you only regret your economies, and it has been a mantra in everything that I do. When I get out of a taxicab, and the fare comes to 75 cents, do you give the taxi driver a dollar and ask for a quarter back? Um . . . no, that’s your philanthropy for that moment. It’s 25 cents to you, but for the cab driver, take a few of those over the course of the day and it makes a difference. But I expanded it to mean time as well. People want to talk to you whether they want your professional advice or they just want somebody to listen to them. And you’re running out the door and you think I can’t talk anymore. Except for missing a plane or a train, give somebody 10 minutes. I always say that I can stay up later that night and make up for the time. I think we are all born with the ability to be someone who gives and makes a difference.

AVENUE: So it started really with your childhood. What point did you realize that you could seriously impact the communities in which you chose to impact?

AA: Well, I certainly saw it, particularly in my mother, who was a lawyer and very active in the community. And I saw how her giving her time and mental abilities made a difference with the Visiting Nurses Association and what’s now known as the United Way, but as the “red feather” and many other community organizations.

AVENUE: What’s been your guiding set of principles on giving? Because you have supported quite a wide range of organizations and initiatives?

AA: I remember again with my parents that the gifts that they made were based on making a major difference. I often will decide to support something if nobody else seems to want to do it.

AVENUE: Your name’s synonymous with Miami. Your name is 50 feet high on the Performing Arts Center. What are the pros and cons of naming?

AA: There are almost no buildings named after a woman.

Women tend to make donations anonymously. I think it’s important for a woman to show that she is philanthropic, the same as men. She becomes a role model and inspiration for other women to give.

AVENUE: Do you use advisors?

AA: No, I don’t even have a foundation. After my death there will be one because of the tax requirements. But no, I just write the checks. And, maybe it’s arrogant, but I seem to know what I will support when I see it.

AVENUE: How do you measure? Do you benchmark how your money’s being employed?

AA: No, and then yes. I serve on the board of many of the organizations to which I have given large sums. I serve on the board of the Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami, Lincoln Center and at one time the Metropolitan Opera and the University of Miami.

The same is true at the Kennedy Center and the Atlantic Council. So, effectively you are monitoring it.

AA: What is a lifetime? You only know that when it is over. As long as I’m putting money into an organization, I will be involved. The old joke is that people of a certain age say they don’t even buy green bananas. I hear about 20-year mission statements and I want to say, I don’t think you’d recognize the world 20 years from now, nor even 10 years from now.

AVENUE: When you make a commitment, is it a lifetime commitment? What are your time horizons?

AVENUE: You give a substantial amount of money to the arts. How do you value your gifts in this area? Is it a priority over other areas like education, health or poverty alleviation?

AA: I don’t think I think about it like a portfolio, where a certain percentage is in municipals, or in real property.

The arts have always been the element in the world that to me defines civilization. I say that it has existed forever. I mean, birds sing, you have mating dances, cave paintings. It is something that defines us as human beings, and it goes on forever. The other side of that is if you’re not in good health you can’t enjoy the arts, so I’m glad to know there are some people who have a different emphasis in their giving. That said, I have done things in medicine and in child care.

AVENUE: Do you think that your giving has inspired others?

Some like to chill poolside; I like to either play tennis or pop down to the private beach, as there is amazing snorkeling to be done.

Earlier this year we surprised our friend with a decadent 50th birthday trip to Anguilla. The island is absolutely stunning and relaxed with some of the greatest water I have ever seen–and coming from an Aussie, that is a BIG compliment.

Travel as fuel

For me travel is one of greatest pleasures to either decompress and/or discover.

Usually it is to recharge the batteries, escape with friends or discover a whole new place and experience.

There is a misconception that Champagne does not pair well with food, but that is absolutely not true. Quite often I am inspired by cuisine and cultures, so being able to enjoy a Ferran Adrià dish and Dom Pérignon moment in Barcelona (or even a mole and Dom Pérignon pairing in Mexico) opens my eyes to the fact there are no limits and fun to push the boundaries.

Favorite global find

When I was 19 I backpacked around Africa for three months and bought my mum this huge 25-pound wooden elephant. Unwisely, I carried this carving on my back for months, but it was worth every bit of the hardship endured. ;)

The Princess Royal, Queen Mary II, God’s Love, Movies, Authors and the Armory HRH the Princess Royal, previously known as Princess Anne, is jolly good at her job and displays both pomp and humor as she goes about doing her good works. She’s “employed” by “The Firm,” as Queen Elizabeth likes to refer to the royal family, and is the only daughter of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh. The princess received her new title in 1987 and is now the patron of 340 organizations, including the National Museum of the Royal Navy. She came to Brooklyn for a lavish luncheon aboard the Cunard Line’s flagship, the Queen Mary II, in support of the $50 million campaign for the preservation of the HMS Victory. This 18th-century warship, arguably the most famous in the world because Admiral Nelson helmed it in the pivotal Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, is both an international symbol of democracy and the oldest naval ship still in commission. The Victory, which celebrated its 250th birthday this May, welcomes 500 thousand visitors a year in Portsmouth, England. The princess regaled her table with stories she has been collecting from sailors, including those “from men on submarines, and you hear stories, real stories,” the princess said cryptically, adding she wished she had “more time to discover New York.” She went on to talk about the importance of the Naval Museum in “preserving our history from the pirates and buccaneers to the cooperation of both [the U.S. and British] navies in times of peace and war.” When a well-intentioned guest told her she had 132 | AVENUE MAGAZINE • AVENUE ON THE BEACH • DECEMBER 2015

uzanne Syz has always had an eye for things that sparkle. From her early days as an interior designer to her extensive art collection and eponymous jewelry line, the Swiss-born Syz knows exactly what captivates people and always has. Fifteen years ago, her career got a movie-worthy kick start when film icon Elizabeth Taylor noticed Syz wearing a homemade turquoise necklace and immediately asked to buy it. Now, the artist-cum-designer’s work can be found adorning royalty—both of the Hollywood and actual variety—thanks to her signature fusion of classic jewelry design and contemporary art. The influence of her art background has become her calling card, something that’s explored in her Assouline book, Suzanne Syz: Art Jewels. Here, we talk to Syz about her life, career journey, and the things she’s learned along the way.

WHAT’S YOUR RELATIONSHIP TO NEW YORK? New York is for me a second home. I lived there in the early ‘80s, which was a time of extensive creativity and freedom.

I had the chance to be close to Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat, and we had some great times. Those moments really inspired me later in my life and creations.

WHAT’S YOUR EARLIEST NEW YORK MEMORY? The song “Killing Me Softly” playing in the elevator when I visited the City for the first time with my father as a child.

WHAT’S YOUR PRESENT STATE OF MIND? I am perfectly happy and living the freedom I love.

WHAT’S THE COOLEST THING IN YOUR APARTMENT RIGHT NOW? A sculpture by Isa Genzken that was at the MoMA last year for a retrospective on her work.

WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST EXTRAVAGANCE? My “time out”— long walks in Tuscany with my four

dogs: a Rhodesian Ridgeback, a Belgian Shepherd and two Lakeland Terriers from Scotland.

WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED? Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning how to dance in the rain.

WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE DINNER COMPANION? My two sons!

WHO IS THE MOST INTERESTING NEW YORKER YOU KNOW? Charles Ryskamp, who passed away.

He was director of the Morgan Library & Museum and then the famous Frick collection. He was my mentor in old master drawings.

I’ve learned a lot with him and missing our long dinners with wonderful discussions on our favorite old master drawings and our love for the arts. An amazing friend! Nowadays, I love to share moments with some of my clients and friends in NYC. A mother and daughter who are the real tastemakers of NYC and who understand the work I do— they know who they are!

WHAT PIECE OF JEWELRY CAN YOU NOT LIVE WITHOUT? A little heart-shaped diamond that belonged to my grandmother. I always keep it with me.

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GROW UP? I’m already grown up, and want to stay the way I am: free, happy, doing what I love and making other people happy with my designs—they’re one-of-a-kind, just like women. ✦
