LET TER FROM T HE EDI T OR DEAR READERS, I never thought of editing a magazine as an exercise in autobiography until AVENUE’s staff began to put the pieces of this, my first summer issue, together. I was born in Lenox Hill Hospital, raised on Long Island, and in the mid-1970s, lived downtown and covered rock music. I was unattached at the time, and probably could have used our listicle on the hottest singles in the Hamptons. Even then, I realized that sexual heat was generated by more than
“DIVE INTO SUMMER, WE ALL NEED A BREAK NOW AND THEN.”
looks, youth or gender orientation, and our list (on page 56), which began with a suggestion from AVENUE’s associate publisher Susan Feinman, reflects the notion that lust knows no discrimination. But there are limits. I first met one of the listees, Valesca Dost, now Valesca Guerrand-Hermès, when she was still a teenager on Fire Island, where I holed up one summer, writing a mystery novel. Karen Moline, who wrote this issue’s cover story (on page 46), arrived in my life as an employee of the publisher of The Rock Yearbook 1980, which I coedited. I met Peter Gethers, author of the new book My Mother's Kitchen, who writes (on page 66) about cooking a brunch for East End literati, when I went to work for Bantam Books as a copywriter around that same time. Peter would later edit three of my books, but I’m getting ahead of myself. I first visited the Hamptons in the 1980s as a writer for New York magazine, where I produced what I referred to as the ritual annual Hamptons story for a number of years. In 1995, I met this issue’s cover girl, Ann Dexter-Jones, through Jane Procter, the then editor of England’s Tatler, where I wrote a column about New York. Years later, I’m happy to say, Ann became a friend, and I met several of her children, one of whom, the Grammy-winning producer and musician Mark Ronson, once bought an apartment from my wife and me. In the 2000s, I interviewed one of Gethers’ brunch guests, the screenwriter William Goldman, for a book Gethers edited, 740 Park. I also wrote about Beatrice Santo Domingo (who appears, albeit masked, on the lead page of On The Avenue) and another Gethers' guest, Gayfryd Steinberg in that book, but they wouldn’t talk to me about their life in that storied cooperative. To Gayfryd’s great credit, she later married a journalist, Michael Schnayerson, whom I met when he worked at Vanity Fair, but who was, many years ago, an early editor at AVENUE. The publisher of 740 Park was yet another of those brunchers whom Gethers fed, and a legendary figure in publishing, Stephen Rubin, now the head of Henry Holt. While writing those books, I interviewed the late Nora Ephron— who inspired Suzanne O’Malley’s latest NOCD column—for another magazine I edited for Bergdorf Goodman. I could go on, but enough about me. Turn the page, dive in, and dive into summer, too. We all deserve a break now and then. And AVENUE will still be with you. Our July and August/September issues will be published as AVENUE on the Beach and distributed in the Hamptons as well as New York City. Michael Gross

ANYBODY WHO WAS anybody was at the Pierre last month for Save Venice’s annual masquerade ball. Sponsored by Oscar de la Renta and Glenn Spiro, the evening was a tribute to a city that lifts spirits even as it sinks. Designer Bronson van Wyck created a 200-foot Venetian flag covering the dining room’s ceiling, and tables were covered with Dutch floral arrangements and clusters of blood oranges, lemons and tangerines.
While many guests were indeed recognizable behind bold masquerade masks, others provoked the literal question of “Who’s who?”

A
warm puppy, décor that does good, and a fierce, free pen: these recordbreaking events for noble causes proved philanthropy is not just alive and well, it’s been reinvigorated as well. Forty years ago, two events converged at the Lenox Hill Neighborhood House: John Manice began volunteering at the organization, and Geoffrey Bradfield landed on our shores from South Africa. John’s first task was to serve wine to the elderly ladies. He was so good, they would ask him to dance after imbibing. Now, he’s on the board, encouraging others to pour wine. Geoffrey organized designer Christmas stockings, which later morphed into creating table centerpieces for the Spring Gala. Roric Tobin designed Geoffrey’s ode to the red rose; Andy Stark floated a white top hat over her table; David

Kleinberg shot Lucite bolts from his; and interior design firm McMillen hung planetmotif décor over an orgy of flowers. Since 1894, the house has helped those in need who live, work or attend school on the Upper East Side. They serve 1,400 healthy meals daily and created teaching kitchens that have been modeled at other institutions. We had our own yum dinner at Cipriani 42nd Street. Diana Quasha chaired and said it was “the best-looking party in town.” The PEN America Literary Awards channeled the appreciation for free speech, raising $2 million that evening. President

Andrew Solomon noted, “There is no worldview more dangerous than the view of those who have not viewed the world.” Meryl Streep presented the PEN/Allen Foundation Literary Service Award to Stephen Sondheim. “Forty years ago, at Yale Repertory Theater, we performed Sondheim’s The Frogs, set in and out of the gym’s pool, and in and out of tune, because of the acoustics and the effect the chlorine had on our sinuses,” said Streep. “Forty years later, he cast me in Into the Woods, giving me my inner bitch—I mean witch—and wrote a song called ‘She’ll Be Back’ for me. After hearing his piano performance, I boldly asked for the sheet music, signed. Afterward, director Rob Marshall and I opened the envelope, which read ‘Don’t f*#*k it up!’ ” Sondheim graciously accepted the award and said if “Cole Porter 101 is taught in schools and Dylan can win the Nobel Peace Prize, why not?’ ” Audra McDonald stopped the show with Sondheim’s “The Glamorous Life.” Macmillan CEO and publisher honoree John Sargent mentioned, “Stand for what is right, not easy.” James and Toni Goodale presented their Freedom of Expression Award to Bob Bland, the lady who founded the revolutionary Women’s March. The PEN/Barbey Freedom to Write Award honored imprisoned writer and filmmaker Oleg Sentsov, presented by PEN’s executive director, Suzanne Nossel, to his cousin, Natalya Kaplan. At the ASPCA Bergh Ball, Linda Lloyd Lambert (who conceived the event 20 years ago, and has raised more than $20 million since) was honored with the ASPCA Henry Bergh Award. A video tribute featured Candice Bergen. “Linda is well-connected and has no agenda. That’s rare in New York,” she said. The handsome Matt Bershadker, ASPCA president and CEO, reminded us that Linda spearheaded their collaboration with the NYPD and their lifesaving relocation service. Samantha Ronson deejayed, and Sotheby’s Hugh Hildesley ran the auction. Filling the Plaza were décor chair Robin Bell and Pretty Little Liars’ Lucy Hale, who beckoned the young crowd to a raging disco below. And the gentle creatures of the earth slept a little better that night. ✦

Just off of Hands Creek, sit the grounds of this resolutely private five acre gated estate. Behind the dramatic stone columned gates you’ll find not just a sprawling 6,000 square foot home, but the canvas on which you’ll paint a four-seasons Hampton’s lifestyle. Active summer days were carved into the property: the tennis court, playground, campfire, and pool house, were not simply placed in their own individual “outdoor rooms” but sculpted into the property as over a hundred trees were meticulously placed to give this compound a sense of permanence. You’d be amazed but not surprised to find the Kennedy brothers lofting the ball for one of their notorious family football battles.

POÉSIES ANTILLAISES In 1945, Matisse began working with several exotic models for the illustrations of an ambitious suite of lithographs in homage to his dear friend, traveling poet, John-Antoine Nau. Nau’s poetry took its themes from voyages in the Antilles, and in particular to Martinique, where the facial sculpture of women from the Islands with their exoticism and richness, was a great inspiration to Matisse. CHIC BACKPACK Summer Water Rosé
MORE PINK GOLD Ever heard the phrase “Summer people, summer not?” The “not” refers to the houseguest who shows up without the universally recognized drink of a Hamptons summer: rosé. The third iteration of Summer Water Rosé launched this spring, and it’s perfect for a warm June night. “There's a bohemian elegance with rosé. It transports you to the good life,” says Brian Smith, cofounder of Winc, which produces Summer Water. Take your evening up a level with the Summer Water Sangria: 1 bottle of Summer Water Rosé, 1 sliced orange, ½ grapefruit, ½ cup of strawberries, ½ cup of raspberries, 1 lime and a handful of mint leaves in a pitcher. Let set for an hour, and serve chilled! summerwater.winc.com
Is your bike’s wicker basket too full of farm-fresh produce? You’ll need a stylish backpack to carry the other essentials. Luxury handbag company Aitch Aitch launched this spring with four designs in the debut collection, each handcrafted from salmon skin. “I knew I wanted to share the beautiful underlying geometric patterns the skins have, and also highlight its durability and the beautiful patina it develops over time,” says Aitch Aitch founder Hailey Harmon. Bonus: The material is also environmentally friendly, as salmon skin is a natural byproduct of the fishing industry. The Amelia backpack in teal—a color Harmon came across while traveling in Iceland—is the perfect piece to transition from a bike around town to a walk down Main Street. aitch-aitch.com The Amelia backpack

CLASSIC SUNNIES Colors in Optics has been throwing shade for 40 years. “We’re called Colors in Optics because we were the first company to bring color into eyewear,” says chief creative officer Jade Hutton. The designs channel Art Deco vibes, merging classic looks with a modern edge, and incorporating both plastic and stainless steel. All frames are handmade. “People aren’t afraid to step out of the box with their look,” says Hutton. New for summer 2017 is an aviator with half flash lenses. “It’s a gradient lens that goes from dark to light. That still gives it a metallic reflection, but it’s less severe,” says Hutton. colorsinoptics.com

FINANCING THE STONE
WHAT’S THE WORTH OF INVESTING IN GEMS? ARCOT FINANCE’S HENRI BARGUIRDJIAN TELLS ALL by Wendy Sy

worldwide. Many financial institutions have pulled away, mainly because of all the anti-money laundering regulations and so forth.” The result? An increased need for money to buy stones. Arcot fills this void in the market.
(on left) Similar Cadenas Pavée timepiece by Van Cleef & Arpels featuring diamonds set in 18K white gold and diamonds.
(from left) 20.98 carat natural yellow sapphire, 37.20 carat Burmese sapphire, 17.07 carat Colombian emerald, (bottom left) 18.43 carat fancy deep brownyellow diamond
Colored diamonds and fine sapphires continue to go up in value, as their demand is far superior to the supply. There’s no such thing as a typical day for Barguirdjian. When he’s not traveling or out at a meeting, there's a good chance he has clients at the office, located on the 30th floor of 450 Park Avenue. Recently, he went to Jaipur and Mumbai in India with his son, Matthew. “We bought a few beautiful, unusual pieces,” Barguirdjian says, while dialing a combination to open his safe. Revealing one of their finds, he says, "This is probably the finest yellow sapphire in the world.” Barguirdjian’s key rule for gem investment is to focus on quality
versus size, which will allow for a higher retention of value in the long run. After obtaining a stone, they will either have it mounted or keep it as is, then resell to other clients, jewelers and auction houses. Of course, there’s also sentimenal value. “Usually, people buy stones to celebrate a happy moment, whether it is an engagement, anniversary or birthday,” says Barguirdjian. It’s wearable art that can be enjoyed for many years, and with a wise purchase, you can earn quite a pretty penny upon reselling. As for the future of Arcot? Says Barguirdjian, “The sky’s the limit.” ✦

hose familiar with the story of Arcot Finance have likely heard about it via word of mouth. The investment firm, which specializes in buying and selling rare gemstones was launched just seven months ago by seasoned diamond expert Henri Barguirdjian and Harbinger Capital hedge fund magnate Philip Falcone. Most recently, Barguirdjian served as the president and CEO of Graff North America for 16 years before retiring from his post. The idea for the new venture started as an innocent conversation between the longtime friends. “We talked about two factors that are happening in the world of gems at the moment,” says Barguirdjian, a European turned New Yorker who comes from a fifthgeneration family of jewelers. “Number one is that there is a strong interest in rare stones, such as colored diamonds and really fine sapphires. Those continue to go up in value, as their demand is far superior to the supply.” Affluent clients have realized the significance of putting a small percent of their wealth in stones. Many are even purchasing pieces for their children and grandchildren to set aside for security. “Number two,” he continues, “is that there is a tremendous shortage of cash for dealers and jewelers
The Duke and Duchess of Windsor circa 1941.
Where did the idea of the famed diamond and platinum Van Cleef & Arpels Cadenas watch come from? Legend has it that the Duke or Duchess of Windsor suggested the concept for this piece, which resembles an ornate bracelet. In 1936, the king became the Duke of Windsor after abdicating his throne to marry his great love, American divorcée Wallis Simpson. It was during this year that he gave her the timepiece, which includes two engraved inscriptions. The first one reads, “For their third anniversary.” Since they met five years before and were not married until 1937, it is a mystery what this date celebrated. As reported by the New York Times in an interview with the Countess of Romanones of Spain, to whom the duchess left the piece, the second inscription is just “too intimate to tell.” She did drop one hint: interestingly enough, it had to do with a bathtub. It seems that the secrets to these inscriptions will be forever set in a priceless object of time, passion and love. —Carol Brodie Carol Brodie is a jewelry expert and the host of Rarities Fine Jewelry on HSN.

Pack your white Birkin and Louboutin sandals: kiss, kiss! After a long turf war over Sag Harbor’s prized Long Wharf restaurant—the former home of B. Smith’s and briefly, Harlow— Ron O. Perelman and his partners Philippe Delgrange, Eric Clapton and Steve Witkoff beat out many contenders to open an East End sister of the oh-so-social Le Bilboquet. holdings with a new restaurant, Lulu. Rowan, who already owns Arbor and Duryea’s in Montauk, is unveiling a wood-burning oven concept in the space that was last home to Doppio. Joey and Marc Wölffer have not only spruced up their restaurant Wölffer Kitchen, also on Main Street, but have taken over the Meeting House in Amagansett. Dopo La Spiaggia has also expanded into East Hampton, taking over the premises formerly occupied by Race Lane.
Buddhaberry too is growing, opening a third location (the first was Montauk in 2013) in Southampton, called Buddhaberry Bijou. This one, across from the movie theater, will be a bit smaller, but offer the same array of treats, including frozen yogurt, waffles, açai bowls and coffee. Hamptons foodies can’t believe their luck that Eleven Madison Park is migrating East for the summer. Partners Daniel Humm and Will Guidara will open a pop-up in partnership

with American Express. EMP Summer House will replace the former scene restaurant Moby’s. As to be expected, people are already angling for seats. The Mediterranean diet is perfect for the beach, and this summer there will be no shortage of places to go to. Elaia Estiatorio, a Greek restaurant, will be taking over the space at 95 School Street in Bridgehampton. It once housed Osteria Salina but was empty for two years. The team behind the East 60th Street restaurant Amali has co-opted the former Greenwich on Montauk Highway and transformed it into Calissa. Of course they will have to compete for customers with longtime favorite Greek steakhouse Old Stove Pub. Let the games begin!
Pack your white Birkin and Louboutin sandals; kiss kiss! Hampton Bays, which is gaining steam, has a Mediterranean spot of its own, Centro Trattoria & Bar. The restaurant opened this winter with James Carpenter, who served as executive chef at Della Femina and the American Hotel, manning the range. “There is a new market west of the Shinnecock Canal,” says Carpenter. He is working with the restaurant’s owner, Salvador Biundo, to serve up some of his family’s traditional recipes like meatballs and buccatini, along with lighter options like Greek salads and impressively large whole grilled branzino. Indian food was never big in the Hamptons until Saaz came along. The Southampton spot has become so popular that owner Sam Mohan is opening a more casual eatery in Bridgehampton on the bones of the old farmto-table restaurant Fresh. (It was Zigmund’s for a hot minute in between.) “There will be traditional dishes, but also new ones that are out of the box, like lamb burgers with Indian spice,’’ says Mohan. “We will also be bringing in local bands.’’ The iconic Dave’s Grill shuttered last year, with owners David and Julie Marcley opening up small-plates restaurant Dave’s Gone Fishing instead. Gabby Karan was in negotiation to take over the original Dave’s space, but that deal went south, and Eric Miller, who has a mega success with Bay Kitchen & Bar on Three Mile Harbor, has grabbed it up. He will be serving a seafood-focused menu. Highway Bar & Grill is opening an outdoor area this season. This ups your chances of scoring a table and enjoying chef Anand Sastry’s creations, like his now legendary spit-roasted chicken; farro salad with watercress, roasted root vegetables, pistachios and lemon; or grilled rack of lamb with pea and quinoa tabouli and mint tahini. Those who aren’t headed to the South Fork this June can get a taste of the beach at a new East Village spot called Out East, which celebrates cuisine of the New York coastline. Fish from farther away will be the mainstay of Sen Sakana, a new Japanese/Peruvian fusion restaurant in Midtown that offers sushi and ceviche from the waters in between those two countries, along with robata and other cooked dishes. ✦

n 1933, at the Hobart Zoo in Australia, Harold, a Tasmanian tiger, died. He was the last of his kind on earth. Although Tasmanian tiger sightings have recently been reported in western Australia, they are unsubstantiated and it is believed the species is forever extinct. On a bright spring day, I entered the habitat of another extinct species, the last original Tuxedo Park WASP. At 94, Henry Alexander “Alex” Salm died in November. He was the owner of the last home remaining in its original family’s hands in the Ramapo Mountain village an hour northwest of Manhattan.

Tuxedo Park was founded as an exclusive society enclave, and for 128 years successive generations of the Coster/Salm family had occupied 25 Tower Hill Loop. a rare privilege to view this impermanent time capsule of a lost world. Since Salm’s house was completed in 1899, all of the other 290 homes in the 3.2square-mile gated community have passed into new hands. Death,
worn. But that’s ancient history, and Alex Salm was its last living, breathing embodiment. The world changed in 132 years, but all around him, in near stillness, Salm lived a life now lost. By all accounts a lovely man, he was educated at Le Rosey, Kent School and Dartmouth, and served with honor in World War II. Then, he worked in real estate and spent weekends in the family home with its views of the mountains and Tuxedo Lake. Salm, who had rowed crew at Kent and Dartmouth, enjoyed sculling quietly on the lake and generously underwrote the construction of a new boathouse at the Tuxedo Club to house the boats he so enjoyed. An active member of the club, to which the vintage photographs lining its
walls attest, he lived a sporting life, vigorously playing court and lawn tennis into his eighties, and cut a dapper figure (in his tuxedo, of course) at club events. When those evenings ended, he returned to a rambling home filled with a trove of treasures of a forgotten age, like his Herter Brothers Art Nouveau dining set. Herter was the furniture maker to New York’s 400 in the Gilded Age, and Salm’s family bought their set new. Though baroque and out of sync with current tastes, it, like the other baronial Tuxedo homes furnished in the styles of Europe—English castle, Eighth Arrondissement, Florentine palazzo—are reminders of a vanished New York. Even as it passed away, the family pictures that still line the Salm house walls—with their fine-featured faces enjoying merry times into the 1940s and ’50s— attest to the quiet persistence of a fine style of life.
The house was designed by William Bates for Salm’s grandfather, Charles H. Coster, a J. P. Morgan partner with a talent for organizing railroads. In modern terms, we might find in his recipe a touch of Schwarzman, a cup of Santo Domingo and a pinch of Ross for spice. Seventeen bedrooms are spread over 14,000 square feet, spotted with empty Champagne jeroboams, elegant safari trophies, and a line of straw boater hats waiting to head off on electric-powered mahogany boats cruising Tuxedo Lake. Strolling down long halls, there is a hush created by the jumble of oriental rugs, finely woven and richly colored, which silences the mellowed wood floors. What will happen to the home and its contents now? There is talk of scattering the contents among relatives in far-off places.
Much will likely end up sold. Few of the pieces will seem important, absent the story of the lives they decorated. Unlikely to end up at Sotheby’s or Christie’s, they will probably be sent to some upstate auction house or local antique center. The groom wore a white shirt from Etro, a Dior jacket, and a John Varvatos scarf that he picked out from his. The flowers were pink roses still wrapped in the plastic from the Korean deli around the corner from New York’s City Hall, where Mick Jones and Ann Dexter-Jones tied the knot for the second time on March 16, 2017, thirty-two years after they first said their vows in the garden of their rented house on Lily Pond Lane in East Hampton. “Oh, our first wedding was so jolly that two of our guests were arrested for DUI when they were driving home afterwards,” Ann says. “Mick offered to go get them, but he wasn’t fit to drive, so we sent his roadie to bail them out. On a bicycle. He was in no shape to drive, either!” Although wedding number two was a surprise to their friends, the happy couple had gradually been rekindling their relationship for three years. “We kept it on the down-low, as I wanted to protect the kids in case it didn’t happen, so whenever we’d be seen out with anyone we’d say, oh, we’re just friends,” Ann explains. “We wanted to make it about us, to get through all the past—when getting back together there are certain obstacles, memories, places, people who get in the way. The shoe fits already; maybe it just needed an insole. So it was nice to have no public expectations.” Ann and Mick Jones were long one of New York’s golden couples, seemingly indestructible, socially savvy, able to move seamlessly uptown and down, and clearly mad for each other despite wildly disparate backgrounds (hers, the Jewish intelligentsia; his, rock and roll). So how did they end up at City Hall getting hitched for a second time? Ann grew up in Liverpool, the second of five children. Her father was a Viennese-born eye surgeon; his uncle Oscar Deutsch founded the Odeon chain of cinemas. When Ann was ten, her father summoned his children into the library, announced that their life was too staid and, as he spun a globe, said that they’d find a new life of adventure wherever his finger landed for. Off they sailed to Australia, with tragic consequences, as Ann’s mother died five weeks after their arrival, at the age of thirty-nine. Ann’s family continued their travels, and she went to fourteen schools in three different countries before returning to England, meeting and marrying band manager/real estate heir Laurence Ronson in her early twenties, and soon giving birth to Mark and the twins Samantha and Charlotte. They lived in a sumptuous house in St. John’s Wood, just down the road from Paul and Linda McCartney, until the marriage ended badly and a stray thunderbolt arrived one night in the form of a hard-partying guitar player and songwriter. “I was going through a very difficult time in my second marriage, and a friend invited me out,” Mick says. “We arrived in this house in St. John’s Wood and I saw this woman walking down the stairs with her hair in a towel and blue jeans and a tee shirt…and I almost fell over. I just knew. We started chatting and then we went to a club called Tramp, and she was being very cynical and treating me like an ignorant rock and roller. I remember we had an exchange about Champagne because I was a bit of an expert, and I told her that Cristal was much better than Dom Pérignon.” He laughs. “Honestly, I could have said just about anything—I was in such a dream state. Starting the next day, I sent her an orchid every day for months. I could have bought a flower shop. Although it did take us a while to get engaged because we both had to get divorced.” Born in 1944, Mick grew up in Somerset, UK, always wanting to be a musician. At seventeen, he went to France as the guitarist in a backup band for a friend, and was soon playing with singers Sylvie Vartan and

Johnny Hallyday. “In 1969, we were going to be performing at a benefit for UNICEF in Paris, and I hadn’t realized that John Lennon and George Harrison and the Beach Boys were going to be there, so I was a bit nervous,” he says. “I was walking around backstage and I heard some rather loud noise when suddenly a door swung open and Richard Burton came storming out. Then Elizabeth Taylor came storming out after him and I got caught in the middle. As soon as they heard my voice, Burton said, ‘Oh, you’re British! Come and have a drink!’ Their argument was instantly forgotten.” In 1976, Mick formed Foreigner. The combination of his musicianship and songwriting skills and the unique voice of singer Lou Gramm made them superstars, with more than 80 million albums sold, more than one billion Pandora spins, and nine top ten hits, most notably the worldwide number one “I Want to Know What Love Is,” which Mick wrote for Ann in 1984. Married life agreed with them. They moved to New York’s San Remo, and their apartment became hangout central for famous friends like Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney, Andy Warhol and Michael Jackson. Son Alexander and daughter Annabelle were born, and Ann decided to raise her brood with the same tough love her parents had given her—even after she’d lost her mother so young (Mick’s mother had suffered from undiagnosed bipolar disorder most of her life. “She would go from being completely effervescent and so happy and warm and loving to just lying in bed all day, not getting up,” he says. “There was no word for it in those days. People suffered all kinds of things in silence”). Ann says, “My mother had a great sense of humor. She was strict but incredibly grounded, and instead of wanting to forget what she did or said, I was desperately holding on to those pearls of wisdom to keep her alive. She was just so wise. She loved life so much— always saw the positive in everything. “I was a bit of a Mummy Dearest. They had an hour of TV a day, and could only use the phone between 6:30 and 7:30, and they said, ‘But, Mummy, we sit down to dinner at seven.’ I went, ‘Oops!’ When they were thirteen, I gave them a dollar each week for every year of age. They didn’t need more because they were too young to drink and drugs were illegal, so if they wanted to get into trouble they’d have to be creative and get a job on weekends. They saw their dads working, and I freelanced as a writer and did a lot of charity work, and they needed to know how important it was to earn their own money. They got internships and worked as deejays, and Annabelle got a job making sweet faces on the cappuccinos at the Coffee Shop on Union Square. After her first shift she came home so excited. ‘Look, Mummy!’ she said. ‘I made six dollars today!’ “Still, they thought I was the Wicked Witch,” Ann adds with a laugh. “I always said, ‘You think I’m strict? You didn’t grow up with my parents.’” Life wasn’t all curfews and phone restrictions, however, as the kids often spent summers on tour with Mick—packed up, as Ann says, “like the von Trapps, or maybe the seven little dwarves.” Or, they’d hang out in the Hamptons. “I started going out in 1977, and I always had a boat,” Mick says. “I grew to know the waters so well I could circumnavigate Shelter Island at night. Then we got a power boat that was the prototype for the Israeli navy, and it was very, very fast and made us quite popular. We could go from one house to another in a blink of an eye.” Clearly, the tough love worked, because all the Ronson and Jones children are remarkably accomplished: how many kids have inspired T-shirts like the collectible “I Want to Be a Ronson”? Mark is the astonishingly prolific music producer/singer/songwriter/DJ responsible for Amy Winehouse’s breakout album and the worldwide smash single Uptown Funk with Bruno Mars. Charlotte is a fashion designer, married to Nate Ruess of the indie band Fun, and mom to their baby, Levon, born in February 2017. Samantha is an acclaimed DJ and member of the band Ocean Park Standoff. Alexander is a musician/ DJ, too, currently recording an album in LA. Annabelle modeled for Charlotte’s label and cowrote, directed and starred in an 11-minute short, Cecile on the Phone, which debuted at Sundance this January. Mick’s eldest son, Roman, is a restaurateur in Miami, and his brother, Christian, is a musician, currently recording an album as well. “I wanted them to believe they were capable,” Ann says. “They all have a very quick wit, and they’re all very humble and work very hard. I always told them to find their passion and follow it.” Equally successful is Ann’s jewelry line, bracelets and more inspired by the baubles she’d see in flea markets when on tour with Mick. “I remember standing outside with my eyes closed and visualizing, if I had one in

silver inlaid with lapis on the top there’d be silver screws and yellow diamonds, or a gold one inlaid with lapis and gold screws and white diamonds. It would be so chic. And then I opened my eyes and said to myself, Oh don’t be silly, Ann. No one is going to read your mind—make them yourself!” Her cunning, gorgeous little bracelets won so many compliments that Ann got serious about jewelry making once the kids were grown. “One day at an event, a reporter from the Los Angeles Times asked how I’d describe my jewelry, and I thought, “Oh my god, it’s the Times and I have to be smart and think of something and I just went, ‘It’s rock and roll chic for women and secure men.’ That became my tagline. I call my pieces wearable art. It’s playful, and it has to make you feel good.” Running her business also kept Ann from dwelling on the couple’s divorce in 2007 after twenty-two years of marriage. “It was the saddest time of my life when we weren’t together,” Mick admits. “I was living an elevated rock and roll lifestyle; we all know what that is. Like the time Sean Penn and I went to see the movie Great Balls of Fire. ‘Hey, let’s go see Dennis Quaid at the Plaza Hotel,’ Sean said as we walked out of the cinema. He had this souped-up sports car waiting, and he drove the wrong way, so we ended up driving round Columbus Circle more than a few times until we finally got to the Plaza, where Sean drove the car up the steps, hopped out, tossed the keys to the shocked doorman, and said, ‘Park it!’ ” He grins ruefully. “I had to understand my part of the problem in our marriage, so I set out trying to find an answer. It ended up in having a greater relationship with all my children. I was the biggest winner at the end of the day. “Being apart strengthened what we have,” he adds. “Obviously we had time to iron out a few quirks, but I think we both matured in a way—not to say we’ve grown old!—but we’re able to talk through things now that we fought about before, and there are less buttons to push because we’re too tired.”

Hardly. Not only is Foreigner celebrating its fortieth anniversary with a global tour, a greatest-hits album release, and Mick’s band biography, A Foreigner’s Tale, but they’re also performing some of their concerts with a 60-piece orchestra and a 40-piece choir. “We have such a wide audience now–I look out sometimes and see young kids with their parents or grandparents, and it’s so gratifying,” he says. “Being onstage keeps you young, and these days it keeps me out of trouble. It used to be the other way round!” Which brings us back to City Hall. “I told Mick that he could play travel agent and organize a wedding,” Ann says. “We went downtown to file for the marriage license, and when they told us we could be married twenty-four hours later, Mick and I looked at each other, and thought, why don’t we just come back here tomorrow? “On the way out, Mick said, ‘I suppose we ought to get a ring.’ I was just thinking of a simple gold band, but I didn’t know where we’d find something like that near City Hall, which is when Mick’s assistant Mariusz said, ‘Well, Mr. Jones, would you like me to pick out the ring?’ and we laughed and I said, ‘I think it would be a little more romantic if Mick got it. Let’s do something really New York and go to Tiffany.’ So we headed uptown, and fortunately for me there were all these barriers by Trump Tower and nowhere for the car to stop, and that’s when I saw Van Cleef & Arpels.” “My heart sank for a moment,” Mick interjects. “Well, we sat down and were given Van Cleef chocolates and Van Cleef coffee and said we wanted gold bands, and they brought out a tray of these huge cocktail rings,” Ann adds. “I asked for something a little daintier, so I got this lovely ring of diamond daisies.” Mick got a simple gold band with an inset diamond. “When we were there I remembered I had bought something for Ann from Van Cleef many years ago,” he says, “so it actually was kind of sentimental, too.” Like Mr. and Mrs. Jones. “The circumstances got in the way for a while,” Mick says, gazing at Ann with a shy, knowing smile, “but the love was always strong.” ✦

THE SOUTH FORK OF LONG ISLAND—AND SAG HARBOR, THE LEAST HAMPTONSY PART OF THAT RITZY REGION, IN PARTICULAR—has long been a cultural and culinary crossroads where literary figures, denizens of Hollywood and serious foodies merged. Novelists and nonfiction book writers, publishers and editors, screenwriters, directors and producers have all mingled freely while indulging in highbrow conversation, Blue Point oysters and local corn. Going back forty, fifty, sixty years, James Jones, Truman Capote, Kurt Vonnegut and George Plimpton could be seen eating grilled cheese sandwiches and poring over their newspapers at the Candy Kitchen, Bridgehampton’s diner hangout. Peter Matthiessen, James Salter and E.L. Doctorow could be found sipping martinis and eating pepper steak at the American Hotel, Sag Harbor’s glorious inn, restaurant and watering hole. Today, writers pile Époisses cheese into their shopping carts at Citarella and buy freshly caught sea bass at Wainscott’s Seafood Shop. Or else they’re eating bone marrow prepared at home by Jeannette Seaver, a literary legend in her own right and the widow of Dick Seaver, the discoverer of Samuel Beckett and the editor of The Autobiography of Malcolm X. One can find the likes of Steven Spielberg and Terry George, Bob Loomis (once William Styron’s editor), Jason Epstein (who invented the trade paperback) and Pulitzer winner Robert Caro. Celebrity chef Tom Colicchio had a run with a Bridgehampton restaurant, Topping Rose, and now Jean-Georges Vongerichten is giving it a go. er s , lk a t , s r e it r w s it s e v lo The South Fork ck. a b it e v lo y e th d n a — s r eaters and drinke I have had a lovely, small Victorian house in Sag Harbor for more than 25 years. I’m one of those writers, talkers, eaters and drinkers. I also like to cook. Even more than cooking, I like to mix and match friends around a table piled high with good food and see what happens. In the early spring, on a typical Sag Harbor weekend, I cooked a Saturday brunch. It was still chilly enough to light a fire in my woodstove. A hearty meal helped to warm the bones. The guests list was a typical Hamptons mix: William Goldman and longtime love Susan Burden, Michael Shnayerson and Gayfryd Steinberg, Stephen Rubin, and my own partner of many years and the co-owner of the Sag Harbor house, Janis Donnaud. Goldman is, of course, the influential screenwriter, novelist extraordinaire, and nonfiction author, as well as the source of one of the most quoted of all time lines on Hollywood, as put down in

his book Adventures in the Screen Trade: “Nobody knows anything.” Burden is not technically a member of the literati/film crowd, but she certainly qualifies by being one of the best-read people in existence, a longtime supporter of the arts and the hostess of the coolest private mini–film festival in the Hamptons, which, twice a year, sees this day’s group and others bingeing on the Greatest Noir Films ever made, Working Class British Films, Prisoner of War movies, Cool French movies, and Wonderful, Obscure Movies Almost No One Has Ever Seen while being fed superb lunches and dinners in between viewings, lectures and discussions. Steinberg is a renowned supporter of the New York Public Library, one of its Literary Lions, and an active backer of the Authors Guild. She is married to Shnayerson, who in addition to his literary heritage—he is the son of an editor and a journalist— has written excellent and important nonfiction books and has been JUNE 2017 • AVENUE ON THE BEACH | 69

one of Vanity Fair’s top contributors for many years. Rubin, a onetime journalist, has a lengthy history running several top publishing companies here and in London, and is now the president and publisher of Holt, as well as a major opera buff, oenophile and all-around erudite bon vivant. And Donnaud has her own eponymously named literary agency. She has done just about everything there is to do on the book publishing side of things and is now an agent for what she calls “experts”—people at the top of their professions who write about their fields of expertise. She is probably the top agent in America for chefs and food writers. I am cooking brunch from a couple of Janis’ clients’ books. The peach coffee cake is from Sherry Yard’s Desserts by the Yard and the blueberry lime muffins are from Asha Gomez’s My Two Souths, my new favorite cookbook, whose recipes combine ingredients and tastes from southern India with good ol’ southern U.S. dishes. While I slave away in the kitchen, pausing only to sip a glass of blood orange juice, I hear the guests chattering away. When I first moved to New York, this is what I imagined every day would be like: listening to really smart people saying really interesting things. In those daydreams, I was always at the periphery of these groupings. I never imagined that one day I’d be at the center, hosting the people I looked up to. 70 | AVENUE ON THE BEACH • JUNE 2017
Janis Donnaud
So what is the topic of the morning as bloody Marys and fruit juices are consumed? Michael’s new book about the contemporary art world: “Just sold it to Public Affairs.” “What’s the focus?” “There are several. Right now I’m researching the rise of the art dealers and how they drive the market.” “The art market is so insane. Do you know that if you’d invested in art and wine over the past decade, you’d be more than ten times ahead of the stock market?”
I pop my head in to say that when I was working with the brilliant writer and art critic Robert Hughes, he planned a short book about how the Mona Lisa became the most valuable painting in the world. Sadly, Bob died before he could write it. It would have been a fascinating and prescient work premised on the notion that perception trumps reality. Susan and Bill are talking about the upcoming Broadway musical of The Princess Bride. It is a year away, at least, but I’m already trying to finagle opening-night tickets. “We went to a table reading.” “That must have been thrilling.” Susan looks thrilled just thinking about it. Bill, having written for screen and stage for more than fifty years, no longer thrills at this stage of the game. His cynical eyebrow raise means: “I’ll save my dancing for joy for opening night.” I nod, trying to be as cynical as Bill, but all I keep thinking is: “Oh my god, oh my God, a musical of Princess Bride! Coolest thing ever!” Steve and Gayfryd and Michael are talking about opera. Michael is taking a Gethers’ new memoir relative next week and is asking questions like the journalist he is. I hear the words “Wagner” and “twelve and a half hours” and “magnificent” from Steve, and I get woozy. That gives me a few free moments to focus on my frittatas while Janis and Steve discuss cookbooks. There’s talk of TV shows and movies and authors for book club readings. People wander into the kitchen, and we discuss my pans, which get appropriately envious reactions. I can always bring a conversation around to my simple needs and likes. Then it’s time to gather around the table. One frittata has pancetta and prosciutto, along with potatoes and shallots. The other is vegetarian: green and yellow zucchini, shallots, mushrooms and potatoes. The best guacamole recipe ever comes from a Robb Walsh book, The Tex-Mex Grill. It’s a perfect complement to the egg dishes and people gobble it up. Janis was responsible for the guac because I started to panic while chopping vegetables and baking too close to guest arrival time.
at h w is is th , rk o Y w e N to d e When I first mov e. k li e b ld u o w y a d y r e v e d e I imagin As always, people like the real food, but the orgasmic responses come when they relish the muffins and coffee cake. The conversation continues in between chews. Susan, to my egotistical delight, spends time talking about my new book about cooking for and with my mother. Eventually, inevitably, we get to Trump. The politics of the table range from extreme left to moderate right. But everyone is in basic agreement that we are living through scary times. Janis uses the word “demoralizing.” Bill asks, “Are we all terrified?” And the unanimous answer is “Yes!” William Goldman I change the subject and scare Gayfryd even more by telling her about my annual Vegas trips—I am about to embark on another one a few days after our brunch. I have been going with the same group of guys to Las Vegas on Final Four weekend for 33 years. Bill and Susan know all about this and egg me on. Talking about our yearly themes and costumes and idiotic behavior— I once went out to dinner nearly naked except for cake icing, decorated as the old Desert Inn hotel—I sense that Gayfryd will never look at me in quite the same way. I tell a story about once having dinner with Gloria Steinem after a return from a Vegas trip. She, too, had just returned from Vegas. I asked what she had been doing there and she said, “Organizing the prostitutes into a union.” Unfortunately, she asked what I had been doing and I said, “Gambling and seeing the classic show Nudes on Ice.” At that point, I sense that Gayfryd isn’t the only one who won’t look at me the same way. Luckily, there is still time to raise the level of conversation, and people are still raving about the blueberry lime muffins, so I count myself lucky, if not forgiven. After some strong coffee, everybody takes off. And I look at Janis, sigh, and say, “I wonder if Irwin Shaw had to do the dishes?” ✦

A moment with one of the city’s top real estate experts . . . FIRST QUARTER 2017 The Manhattan apartment market rebounded in the first quarter, as both prices and the number of sales rose for resale apartments, compared to a year ago. The average resale price rose 5 percent to $1,561,911—its highest level since the second quarter of 2015. A new record was set for the resale median price, which at $955,000 was 3 percent higher than 2016’s first quarter. There were 1,795 resale closings reported in the first quarter, which was 5 percent more than a year ago. Including new developments, the average price for all apartments reached a new record of $2,174,105. The median price for all apartments of $1,150,000 was also a record, and 8 percent higher than in the prior quarter. A 17 percent decline in new development closings brought the number of sales for all types of apartments down 1 percent from the first quarter of 2016. After slowing dramatically leading up to the presidential election, the Manhattan apartment market has started to pick up momentum. With some aspects of the uncertainty now gone and sellers adjusting to the realities of the market, first-quarter market data was better than expected, although increased activity was not seen as much in the upper end of the market. While the data show a decline in new development closings, many of the deals are signed months or years in advance, so they are not always indicative of current market conditions. ✦ Hall F. Matthews Lane: A James Michael Howard Fully Furnished Estate Bridgehampton. Informed by an aesthetic that spreads across centuries while celebrating the best of what’s new, Matthews Lane joins the growing resume of highly styled, fully furnished Hampton estates by James Michael Howard, the renowned 2017 ICAA award winning designer, that exemplify coherency in the abstract world of architecture, interiors and the landscape that contain them. In collaboration with McAlpine-Tankersley Architecture and Landscape Details, the visionary Howard has just completed construction of a 7 bedroom residence that spans 11,600 SF on three levels of fully articulated living space. The head swiveling journey begins as you pass through the reception hall arriving in the dramatic great room, under 30 ft. beamed ceilings, which incorporates multiple seating areas, dining room and gallery, all warmed by a custom fireplace that anchors the room while walls of windows allow for an abundance of natural light. The state of the art, eat-in kitchen, with 10 seat breakfast area, is warmed by its own fireplace. Additional common spaces include the media room and an intimate living room. The 1st floor master wing with sitting area, fireplace and luxurious bath is joined upstairs by 4 guest suites including a secondary master with roof terrace. The bedrooms are purposely positioned so that none share common walls. An elevator connects all floors to the lower level with two more bedroom suites, a state-of-the-art theater with plush 16-person seating, bar and large recreation room with fireplace and custom billiards table. Geo-thermal heating, Control4 technology, Lutron lighting and a full audio/visual package add to the property’s list of amenities. . The lush, manicured grounds behind stone walls, including mature specimen trees, espalier apples and verdant lawn, are enhanced by the heated pool and spa serviced by a covered cabana area that incorporates the pool house with full bath and dressing room, outdoor fireplace and built in kitchen which connects over broad stone patios to the two-car garage. Turn key to the extreme, Matthews Lane lies midway between village and ocean beaches off Bridgehampton’s iconic Ocean Road and close to everything that makes the Hamptons a world class resort. TOP HAMPTONS BROKERS TALK ABOUT THE STATE OF THE HOUSING MARKET ON THE EAST END
moderated by Kelly Laffey photographed by Daniel Gonzalez
100 | AVENUE ON THE BEACH • JUNE 2017
AVENUE: Why do people continue to rent or buy in the Hamptons year after year?
what was going to happen in the world. This season, it’s more of a balanced market.
GARY: I think people want to get away. Since it’s only a two-hour drive, and sometimes less in the off-season, it gives them a great place to go. When I came out here the first time 30 years ago, there was nothing to do out here. Now people come out here off-season. They have associates. They have friends. They have playmates for their kids. They have dinner dates.
MARYANNE: I call it a healthy market, because many of the dot-coms are in contract now, and a lot of them closed in the first quarter also of this year, so I’m starting to see builders looking for land again.
JUDI: Our feeder market is Manhattan, and there’s enough of an audience that wants to escape from the city. I’ve heard people say, “I just could never spend the summer in the city. I have to be out in the Hamptons to keep my sanity.” There are world-class beaches and beautiful architecture. It’s been the place for wealthy industrialists to come for 300 years. I believe it’s the quality of life we have here. TONY: I remember when I first came out here, I was in the bar and restaurant business. After Labor Day, they rolled the sidewalks up. But as the years have changed, we’ve evolved into more of a year-round community.
GARY: In any given market, in any given price range and location, there’s only a finite number of houses that are going to work for any particular buyer. The real buyers are the ones who maybe come away with one house at the end of the day. A lot of the homes are gone in the opening luxury price range. But if you look diligently you will find what you’re looking for in each price range.
“As the years have changed, we’ve evolved into more of a yearround community.” —Tony Cerio
AVENUE: How is the rental market doing this year? JR: At Halstead, we’ve seen early increased activity in rentals this year. As of the close of the first quarter of 2017 in Halstead’s East Hampton office, we have already experienced a 47 percent improvement over the same time period in 2016. MARYANNE: I find that a lot of people are renting the same thing—a lot of repeat rentals. Once they find a house that they’re very comfortable with, they seem to just want to renew. Those are the early renewal leases. But the new prospective tenants who are coming to the Hamptons are starting much later.
AVENUE: Is it a buyer’s market or a seller’s market? JUDI: Everything’s supply and demand, so there are certain segments of our market where there’s too much inventory for the amount of demand that there is. That means prices are going to go down. In other areas, we wish we had more supply. ANN: The second half of last year was a stalled market. It’s as if the market froze. Prices didn’t lower or have any movement. Nothing happened in most price ranges. I think people didn’t know what was going to happen with the election and didn’t know
ANN: The interesting thing is that most of the customers prior to coming out know everything about the market from online research. They spend hours researching online. JUDI: I think that buyers really need to be very careful, because there’s a lot of information out there, and it’s not always real. It’s important that we continue to educate buyers and sellers to gather all available details, but then filter out the incorrect information, because there’s a ton of it on the internet.
AVENUE: What is something people should know before they rent or buy in the Hamptons? JUDI: Come out and see the home before you commit. JR: Buyers often have different goals regarding their “wish” lists, and indecision has caused many of my buyers to lose a property that they later regret not having moved on sooner. I would say before you go house hunting, do your best to have everyone involved in the purchase on the same page.

MARYANNE: People love the outdoors, and pocket doors are popular now. They go right into the walls, and then the living room becomes part of the pool area. ANN: I’m finding that my customers/clients are looking for fabulous outdoor living spaces. Homes with outdoor kitchens; outdoor fire pits for a late-night glass of wine; fabulous bathrooms with steam showers and soaking tubs. A pool house/ cabana with a fully equipped kitchen and outdoor showers is also on top of their lists. Coming out to the Hamptons means outdoor living, and the more areas to enjoy on your property, the better.

separate legal cottages on 1.5 acres. I believe this property will prove that, in some cases, age does not matter.
AVENUE: What about modern homes? JR: We saw a house on Shelter Island where the buyer had to have a place for her seaplane to land.
AVENUE: What home styles are popular in the Hamptons? GARY: I think it’s harder to sell an older house today than it ever was. You have a house that was built 2003, 2004, 2005—which isn’t that old—and then you compare it to a house that was just built. It’s much harder to sell that older house than it’s ever been with all the great new construction. Gary DePersia, Judi Desiderio, Maryanne Horwath and Tony Cerio
TONY: It’s a cycle with those type of houses. They come in, then they go out, they come in, they go out. GARY: Modern homes that are being built today are so much different from what was built in the ‘70s and the ‘80s. I have a house on Flying Point Road that just went to contract where they have an aquariumlike window from the pool house into the pool and a 20-foot window that recedes into the floor when you flip a button. JR: If you love minimalism, you buy modern. If you love the classic shingle style, you buy traditional. Those who want both are in luck too. Today’s modern traditional offers classic shingled exteriors with modern interior design choices.

better things out there. And hopefully we’ll move it in the next couple of months. MARYANNE: I’m trying to be excited about all my listings. I think that’s the best way to be. They are all special. JR: An exciting listing I have to share is what I describe as the now rare new construction available for sale in the Amagansett Lanes. Set between the ocean and the village, a spacious backyard facing west, and with approximately 5,100 square feet on three levels. This project is a collaboration of Scott
Tony Cerio
MARYANNE: I think clients see the modern box, and then maybe the wife still wants the traditional house. That’s where transitional homes come into play, where there is a mixture of the architecture, with really modern finishes inside to compromise. I see a lot more of those happening. JR: I agree and disagree. I’ve had recent experiences where clients want to look at new construction only, being less concerned with location. Looking at new construction from west to east within that range of their purchase power, just because they want to stay away from things that may need an update or an upgrade. However, older homes have appeal as well if there exists a special quality. An example is my newest listing at 132 Main Street, East Hampton. A main house built circa 1885, plus two single and 102 | AVENUE ON THE BEACH • JUNE 2017
AVENUE: What is a listing you’re particularly excited about? TONY: I have this property at 253 Georgica Pond Road. It’s on two acres. The house has tons of potential, and there’s a chance if you did a second story, you’d probably get a water view. In Georgica, for anything under $6 million, it’s probably one of the

AVENUE: Do most people stage their homes these days?
ANN: I’m excited about our new listing that will be launched any day now, located at 14 Grassy Hollow in East Hampton. It’s a gorgeous traditional home. Dramatic stone entry gates, and the owners brought in more than 100 specimen trees. It is situated on more than five acres, with numerous outdoor living spaces. It features a beautiful stone-terraced fire pit, an all-weather tennis court and a full equipped pool house with outdoor living room and outdoor dining room.
JUDI: Absolutely. Lately, there have been a couple of homes where people go in and put in just artwork, no furniture. When you have big, wide-open white walls in contemporary homes, it really gives a house personality. And at one site a buyer walked in and pictured his furniture in there. It was one of the easiest sales we’ve ever had. On the flip side of this is when you get called in to resell something you sold to somebody 25 years ago, and all you think about is, “Please empty the house and put a fresh coat of white paint on the walls.” Only in the Hamptons is a 10-year-old house outdated!

GARY: One that recently came on the market is a James Michael Howard listing. I just recently put his house, Mecox Farm, at 41 Halsey in contract. And he just came out with another beautiful house at 70 Matthews Lane. And the hallmark of all his homes are not only are they examples of great interior design, he furnishes them too. The exteriors are gorgeous. The interiors are gorgeous. You just move right in. It’s well done. And then one of the best deals out there right now is my Farrell listing on Parsonage Lane. If you’re looking in Sagaponack South for a 104 | AVENUE ON THE BEACH • JUNE 2017
It’s been strategically placed, so you get maximum views of the Big Blue.
JUDI: We have a compound in the heart of the estate section of East Hampton Village, totaling nearly four parklike acres. Two separate lots—one vacant , the other with a home, tennis, pool, spa, pool house and three-car garage—all combined at $17.75 million And then the Bridgehampton office has a brand-new John Hummel construction on Marine Boulevard across from the ocean that’s all glass. It really just makes you happy being in a house where he brings the outside in. You feel, hear, see and smell the sea. You feel there are dunes all around this house.
GARY: When buyers ask, “What can I do to make my house look better?” I say declutter. Everyone has their own clutter at home, and when they come to the Hamptons, they don’t want your clutter. MARYANNE: I’m a huge believer of staging. There’s many different ways to do it, whether you buy it or rent it. And I’ve had so many listings where people come in and they want to buy the furniture. ✦

NEW YORK PRIME BEEF The Best Steaks on the Planet: Delivered Fresh, Never Frozen
N
ew York Prime Beef sells the best steak on the planet. “It’s not a humble statement,” says founder Vinnie Pacifico. “If somebody is going to put down a $400 bottle of wine for dinner, don’t you think they want the best steak? It just goes hand in hand. That’s the client we want.” One customer recently ordered $8,000 worth of Japanese Kobe—that’s six to eight steaks, depending upon how thick they are cut—to be delivered to what turned out to be a Gulfstream jet. “Wherever they were going they were taking the steaks with them,” Pacifico says.
“I don’t know of anyone else who can operate on this scale,” Tanner adds. Pacifico also owns Vista Food Exchange, a meat company that is the secret that allows them access to the finest meats on the planet. “Because we buy everything, I have the ability to go out and get the best of the best,” Pacifico explains. “If you just needed to buy the top two percent of prime, you’d be hard-pressed to find people to sell it to you because they say that’s all you’re going to buy from me? But when you buy everything from them you have an advantage to get what you want.”
Chef Josh Tanner
“If somebody is going to put down a $400 bottle of wine for dinner, don’t you think they want the best steak?” New York Prime Beef is a bespoke butcher that will ship to you anywhere in the world. The company dry-ages their steaks in a state-ofthe-art facility in the Bronx. Their butchers, the best in the country, custom cut and sign each order, which they ship via Federal Express. “When you think about clothing, or automobiles, or anything in the luxury realm, that’s what we offer,” says Josh Tanner, Pacifico’s partner, who’s in charge of sourcing, selecting and aging New York Prime’s products. “It’s expensive and worth it.”

In their first year, they turned to the Hamptons to get their name out, partnering on events with luxury brands like Rolls-Royce, Maserati and Ferrari, and will do so again this summer, including a tasting at the Rosé Soirée in Southampton on May 28. “That’s the easiest way for us to introduce them,” Tanner says. “I have people say, ‘You call it the greatest steak on the planet,’ and they laugh, and then they eat the steak and they say, ‘Wow, that’s literally the best steak I’ve ever had in my life,’” he says.
They’ve also done events with renowned chefs, including Ricardo Cardona, who cooks for entertainers like Marc Anthony, and is the chef for the New York Yankees. Trainer Bobby Maximus, who famously eats steak every day, is a fan, as is Food Network star Viet Pham, who posts his New York Prime steaks on Instagram. —Rodney Sparrow ✦ Newyorkprimebeef.com 1800-STEAK-NY

Frederico Azevedo
Knows Good Landscaping The Legendary Designer Making the Hamptons Look Good
R
obb Report magazine has called Frederico Azevedo, the master designer behind Unlimited Earth Care, “the most influential landscape designer in the Hamptons,” and it’s easy to see why. Born in Porto Alegre, Brazil, in 1962, Azevedo has spent his life studying landscape design around the world. But after travels in Brazil, England and the United States, this talented landscaper decided to settle in the Hamptons. With its unique mix of farms, woods, dunes and about a half dozen other types of land, the Hamptons is universally acknowledged as one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Azevedo is acutely aware of that, and makes sure to incorporate his surroundings into every design. Azevedo’s approach is a holistic one. He eschews fads, and thinks about everything that goes into a site: not just where it is, but what’s nearby. Not just its past, but its future. As he told AVENUE in 2015, “The trick is not to know what looks good now, but what will look good five years from now. These environments are always evolving.” Azevedo is a true renaissance designer, as comfortable designing around an ultramodern Norman Foster house as a wooden shingled mansion. For his landscaping skills, he’s been rewarded with the respect of his clients and his peers alike. He is a member of the Association of Professional Landscape Designers, the American Horticultural Society and the Horticultural Alliance of the Hamptons. ✦

Stephanie Nass
S
DECLARES VICTORY
tephanie Nass has been called one of New York’s hottest socialites, but she’s more than just a pretty face. She’s a world-class chef and entertainer, with a knack for making food and connections. Nass’s passion for food began at an early age. Growing up in Westchester, Nass would cook with her mother, an activity that gave her a lifelong love for making incredible dishes. As a teenager, Nass left Horace Mann to learn how to cook in France. She learned French while she was there, too—one of four languages she speaks (the others are Spanish, German and English) After high school, Nass studied art history at Columbia. “While food is my absolute passion, art is a very close second,” she says. Going to college in New York gave Nass the chance to follow her culinary dreams. “I always grouped my classes on two or three days so that I could work in restaurant kitchens,” she says. “I got my cooking fix that way.” After college, Nass went on to the tech world, where she worked as a financial analyst. But she never lost her passion for food and art. She went to culinary school at night (she has a Grand Diplôme from the International Culinary Center), and on the weekends, she started hosting dinners for her friends with one rule: everybody had to bring a friend. From that concept came the Victory Club, a members-only dinner club where young professionals can connect over delicious food and a shared love of art and culture.

The Head of New York’s Hottest Members Dinner Tells Her Story
At Victory Club, Nass isn’t just a chef—she’s an entertainer, too. She hand-paints her menus and embroiders her napkins. And whether in front of 10 guests or 100, this suppertime socialite sets the mood, keeping the conversation flowing and making connections between old friends and strangers alike. Sometimes, that can pay dividends even she didn’t expect. Last year, Nass introduced two strangers at a Victory Club dinner. This summer, she’ll be a bridesmaid at their wedding. Today, Nass has high-flying partners like BMW of Manhattan and Pernod Ricard, and has hosted events in New York, London, Miami, the Hamptons, Nashville, Rome, Vienna and Connecticut. She also has a line of patterned cake sheets, Chefanie Sheets, that she paints and designs herself. “For five minutes and $15, they make any pastry look like a work of art,” she says. They’ve attracted some serious attention—they were on the Today Show in April, and Nass has made cakes for Tory Burch, Questlove and Schumacher. ✦

STAFFING YOUR
SUMMER ESTATE The Hamptons Employment Agency Helps
T
he right domestic staff can make all the difference for your summer in Hamptons, and those in the know look to the Hamptons Employment Agency (HEA). With offices in Manhattan, Southampton and Boca Raton, HEA is widely regarded as a leader in pairing domestic professionals with discriminating employers. AVENUE magazine recently sat down with Aleksandra Kardwell, founder and president of the Hamptons Employment Agency, to learn more about what it takes to staff an active Hamptons summer estate most successfully. Tell us about how you have helped clients with large residences meet their summer staffing needs. I’d be happy to. To give a specific example, one of our largest clients is a highly social business leader who likes providing an amazing experience for his guests at his summer residence in the Hamptons. Each week, from Thursday through Monday, we provide a staff of approximately 30 domestic professionals. Throughout the summer, we work closely with the house manager to make staff adjustments for holiday weekends and other special events. Tell us more about the type of staff required, service needed and entertainment provided. 120 | AVENUE ON THE BEACH • JUNE 2017
For the client I just mentioned, the staff includes chefs, servers and bartenders, housemen, housekeepers and others. All staff members wear daytime as well as evening uniforms. Service on a par with that of a five-star hotel is required. Weekly entertainment, some of which we provide as well, includes comedians, magicians, and a Michelin-starred guest chef. What advice would you give to someone with a Hamptons residence who is looking to hire a team of domestics for the summer? For all domestic employers, it is important to think through which and how many professionals are required, and this is something that we often help our clients do. In addition, the most critical aspect of any placement is that the right match occurs. It’s great when a client is specific in describing what they are seeking, as we are then best able to identify the right candidates for that client’s particular needs and preferences. I would also recommend to any client—and particularly one with a large estate—to start the search for domestic help early, perhaps at the beginning of February, since many great professionals commit to positions early in the summer season. ✦ For more information, call the Hamptons Employment Agency at 631.204.1100, 212.521.4373 or 561.962.4188, or visit their website at hamptonsemployment.com.

THE WILD, WILD EAST LAWYER EDDIE BURKE JR., WHO CAN SOLVE ALMOST ANY PROBLEM IN THE HAMPTONS, REFLECTS ON HIS TIME IN THE RESTAURANT BUSINESS As told to Beth Landman
I grew up in Sag Harbor. I went to elementary school here, and my family was lucky enough to purchase a cornerstone property on Long Beach, the Salty Dog. We transformed it into the Waterside and eventually built condominiums there as well, which we still own. Because I grew up around a restaurant, I was enthralled by the food industry and wanted to go to the Culinary Institute of America, but my dad had a firm glimpse at how difficult restaurants were. He was also a town justice and then a State Supreme Court justice, and 122 | AVENUE ON THE BEACH • JUNE 2017

he put the gavel down and ordered us all to law school. He said, “Even if you don’t want to be a lawyer, I want you to get that degree. It will help you in any business.” I ended up falling in love with law, but I still had an itch to be a restaurateur. In 2001, I opened Jeff & Eddy’s on Main Street in Sag Harbor with my Jimmy Buffett still partner, Jeff has a parking spot

Jimmy Buffett [who has a house in nearby North Haven] was our landlord. I told him I was a local boy looking to do well. In 2004, I bought the building from him. There were no brokers. It was just he and I talking things through. He was great. He was an amazing businessman with a laid-back, easygoing approach to dealing with people in a straightforward way. Eventually, Laurent Tourondel took over the lease and opened LT Burger [in July 2010]. It’s always been tough to park in Sag Harbor, and Buffett had spaces in the back that were like gold. He sold the building to me with the condition that he would keep a parking spot. He still has it. I protect it with my full legal power. ✦

ddie Burke Jr., whose law office is on Sag Harbor’s Main Street, is the “go to” guy for any problem you might have on the East End, from a traffic violation to a felony. The dapper 52-year-old grew up in the village and has witnessed its growth. His journey has taken him from a schoolboy working in his family’s restaurant to becoming one of the Hamptons’ best-known attorneys, with clients ranging from Jason Kidd to the late Sandy Gallin. His father, Edward D. Burke Sr., was a Southampton town justice and then a State Supreme Court justice. When Senior’s portrait was recently unveiled at Suffolk County Supreme Court in Riverhead, Junior introduced him: “He said arguments are rarely black and white, and I used that theme [in my speech].”

HAVE WE MET?
OUR MR. HAY MAKES HAY OF THE COSTUME INSTITUTE GALA AND MORE by R. Couri Hay THE HAUTEST PARTY OF THE YEAR
Anna Wintour’s Costume Institute Ball, the annual parade of power, beauty and celebrity, again exceeded all expectations. From the hand-painted white and blue carpet that ran up the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s steps to the 30-foot-tall topiary violet, this night was all about the extravagant details. It was hard not to gasp from both the beauty and the fragrance of what looked like 200,000 roses in white, pink and burgundy. The grand staircase was flanked by mirrored walls, in front of which the magical designer Raul Avila suspended 200 five-foot-wide red floral balls. The ceiling was lit in hot pink, to complement an enormous wall Kendall of hot pink Jenner roses. This wasn’t mere decoration:

it was an art installation, which was fitting for the opening night of a retrospective of the designs of Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons. Honorary chair Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of Jackie O and the former U.S. ambassador to Japan, said, “In Japan, people are walking the streets in Rei’s image, wearing amazing clothes and transcending rules. They’re inspired by the freedom she has given them to explore what’s new. In today’s world, where we each need to figure out

what we believe in and stand for, this exhibition has a lot to teach us. Rei’s work is beautiful and transcends age and gender. I’m proud to call her a friend.” This year’s other cochairs were Katy Perry, in a dramatic red shroud by Maison Margiela that veiled her usually front-andcenter décolletage, derriere and face; Pharrell Williams, in ripped jeans and black leather biker jacket by Rei; and the night’s sexiest couple, Gisele Bündchen and Tom Brady. The spouses kissed and stroked each other’s adorable posteriors in front of 210 members of the media. Mon Dieu! Sean “Diddy” Combs caused a human traffic jam when he decided to lie down on the great stairs, while the photographers went wild. Dion said, “I brought my driver’s license because otherwise I would have had to start singing ‘My Heart Will Go On’ if they didn’t let me in." Both were left cooling their stilettos until Combs finally huffed and puffed his way up the staircase. Dinner was served on pink, red and burgundy silk cloths centered with gold vases filled with ranunculus, anemones and peonies to complement the plates printed in a blue peony pattern. The meal consisted of lobster and crab with generous

LUNCH IN THE SAHARA
Diana Vreeland’s debonair son Frederick “Freck” Vreeland is turning 90 this June, and will celebrate by taking a trip around the world. Vreeland’s long career in the foreign service culminated in an ambassadorship to Morocco. Last month, his friend Charles Leslie gave a lunch for Vreeland

Kylie Jenner, who confessed, “I always sneak a selfie,” was among the first to break the No Social Media Rule, posting a group shot in the ladies’ room that featured her sister Kim, A$AP Rocky, Brie Larson, Paris Jackson and Lily Aldridge. “The real party was in

SECRETS OF THE DAKOTA
At a reception at their Dakota apartment cohosted by Frick director Ian Wardropper, real estate heirs and millennial philanthropists Toby and Larry Milstein revealed secrets of the building where Rosemary’s Baby was set and John Lennon was murdered. During the talk, titled “Across the Park and into the Past,” guests learned that $30,000 Kylie Jenner in cash was hidden under the floors of John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s apartment by the former owner, but the co-op board refused to destroy the parquet to find it.
