L ET TER FROM T HE EDI T OR DEAR READERS, New York’s Fall/Winter Fashion Week has just ended, and it seems clear that the biannual fashion-go-round is a sometimes hot mess past due for a makeover. On avenuemagazine.com, we’ve been quoting the folks in the bleachers about how to fix it. Not that anyone will listen. But our redesigned website launches this month, and I do hope you’ll visit.

Speaking of makeovers, AVENUE’s spring fashion issue marks the debut of our redesigned magazine. Both the print issue and the website have changed editorially over the last few months. Now they have a new look to match. Behind their visual reinvention is our creative director/managing editor Jessica Ju-Hyun Lee Ho, who started at AVENUE right out of New York’s School of Visual Arts 17 years ago and has been its designer, its anchor and its institutional memory through three owners and six editors. The twinkle in her eye when I asked her to redesign AVENUE is now reflected in its refresh. "It’s amazing and fun to have a creative vision and see it come alive," she says. Our new logo, a modern take on the classic avant garde font we've used for 41 years, is a symbol of our intentions. This issue also introduces “Food for Thought,” a new column on restaurant news, by Beth Landman, whose credits include stints at The New York Times, the New York Post, New York Magazine, VF.com, The Daily Beast and The Hollywood Reporter. There's also “N.O.C.D., our new back-page column by editor-at-large Suzanne O’Malley, who was still wearing white knee socks when she first came to New York as a winner of a Bobbie Brooks National Fashion Board Scholarship. She went on to become a senior editor at Esquire, and appeared on the cover of New York magazine in 1983 when it excerpted a best seller she coauthored, How to Avoid Love and Marriage. Suzanne has further distinguished herself as an actress, screenwriter, producer, Edgar Award–winning true-crime book author (The Unspeakable Crime of Andrea Yates), and lecturer at Yale. But back to fashion. This month, we spotlight two single mothers who are also fashion icons. AVENUE’s deputy editor Kelly Laffey profiles (and Damon Baker photographs) our cover star, Julia Reston Roitfeld. Suzanne Weinstock Klein introduces you to Lisa Kulson, the woman behind Theory. To round out the issue, George Wayne, also new to our pages, goes gown shopping with Dennis Basso, the ever-so-social designer of furs and fantastic gowns; and, Andrea Blanch, whose work has appeared in Vogue, Elle, and Rolling Stone, photographs spring fashions that illustrate the notion that sometimes the best rule is no rules at all. om Wolfe just published another acclaimed book, The Kingdom of Speech (Little, Brown), a critique of Charles Darwin and Noam Chomsky. It’s his “boldest bit of dueling yet,” according to the New York Times. His wife, Sheila, is continuing her graphic design work, which began with her role as art director of Harper’s. His son, Tommy, has just launched a catering company called Half with beautiful new wife Jena. His daughter, Alexandra, has authored a new, muchdiscussed book, Valley of the Gods: A Silicon Valley Story (Simon & Schuster). And what has your family done this month?
It’s been called “blistering, brilliant and hysterical,” and is of course, timely. His exhibition, titled “Composer,” references the connection of painting and music and will be shown at the Gallery at Windsor this spring and at Albertz Benda in New York. Windsor founders Hilaryand Galen Weston introduced us to Christopher at an elegant lunch at (where else?) the Carlyle. As often happens with artists, his words were as thoughtful as his paintings. “I recently found myself defending Keats’ identification of truth with beauty on the grounds that his statement was made when he was very young. I now feel as if I let him down,” said Le Brun. Nodding in agreement were James Reginato, Fern Mallis, Olivier Berggruen and Milly de Cabrol. Lest you think all things Oscar are west, think again. There was a quinfecta of premiers last month featuring a gold digger (literal and male), a scheming pope, a billionaire burger flipper, a grumpy kinda comedian, and four girls, in various stages of undress. Sound like your basic UES dinner party? Andrew Saffir’s Cinema Society debuted the movies Gold, The Founder and The Comedian, and HBO’s The Young Pope and the final season of Girls, in a five-week tear that had us rubbing shoulders with Robert De Niro, Matthew McConaughey, Michael Keaton and Jude Law (who purred to me, “My pope is sooo evil!”), and yes, there were socials there too, but who cares? We careened between the Plaza’s Palm Court, the Roxy and the Friars Club, ending with the Girls extravaganza at Cipriani, and, as only girls would do, sending us home with a goody bag full of all a girl’s wants—chocolate, hand lotion and the promise of fake lashes. ✦

o seem savvy in the city, it’s vital to stay on top of the ever-changing restaurant scene. Welcome to “Food for Thought,” which aims to tickle your culinary curiosity and keep you up to date on new dining options. March is a storm of culinary activity. How many chefs does it take to open a highly anticipated restaurant? Three in the case of Majorelle, the elegant new Moroccan-influenced Mediterranean set to begin serving this month in the Lowell Hotel. Charles Masson, one of the city’s best-loved maitres d'—who left his family’s restaurant, La Grenouille, two years ago and spent a hot minute at the Baccarat hotel’s brief-lived Chevalier—will front the place. He first brought in acclaimed French toque Christian Delouvrier to create the menu. Now, Delouvrier will act as consulting chef, while former Grenouille sous chef Mario Fortuna has been brought in to oversee the kitchen along with Giovanni Beneduci, who worked at Le Bernardin, EN Japanese Brasserie and Morimoto and has an affinity for lighter fare. François Latapie knows a thing or two about bistros; he was a partner in the legendary La Goulue. He’s now opened a cozy Yorkville spot called Little Frog, and it’s already packed. “There is a little bit of a renaissance in this area thanks to the Second Avenue subway,” he observes, but it doesn’t hurt that the food is being prepared by Xavier Monge,

HOW TERRA-COTTA GARGOYLES SEVERED FROM THE WOOLWORTH BUILDING’S CROWN 35 YEARS AGO INSPIRED OUR COLUMNIST’S ACCLAIMED NEW NOVEL by John Freeman Gill
A
hundred and four years after the Woolworth Building was opened with dazzling showmanship as the world’s tallest skyscraper, the venerable neo-Gothic masterpiece is again one of the most high-profile real estate projects in New York City. In 1913, President Woodrow Wilson inaugurated the 60-story office tower by pressing a button in the White House that illuminated the building with 80,000 light bulbs. Now Alchemy Properties is converting the landmark tower’s top 30 stories into 33 residential condominiums. The first five apartments were put on the market in January, with asking prices ranging from $4.575 million for a one-bedroom to $26.4 million for a full-floor residence. The sevenstory penthouse in the tower’s pinnacle, which is expected to carry a gobsmacking $110 million price tag, will be offered for sale midyear, said Kenneth S. Horn, Alchemy’s president. The Woolworth’s soaring terra-cotta façade—festooned with Gothic crockets, gables and gargoyles—has always been a major selling point. Handcrafted by the Atlantic Terra Cotta Company, the fired-clay cladding was chosen for the building to “clothe it in beauty,” as its architect, Cass Gilbert, put it. Today the Woolworth’s top floors are shrouded in black netting, as Alchemy implements a $20

million plan to replace 3,400 damaged pieces with new terracotta duplicates. The project prioritizes the textured window surrounds, which are visible from the inside, framing striking city views in vibrant blues, greens and yellows. “It’s a huge endeavor,” Horn said, “but it’s a very big responsibility working on this building, and you want to do it right.”
Architect Cass Gilbert chose terra cotta for the Woolworth’s façade to “clothe it in beauty.” The Woolworth has exercised a great hold on my imagination since the early 1990s, when I admired it regularly from the window of my sister's Tribeca loft. Over time, the building became almost a living character for me, its complexly textured surface changing moods in different lights and seasons. Consequently, when I set out to write my first novel, The Gargoyle Hunters— which will be published this month by Alfred A. Knopf—I was determined to set a major chapter atop the landmark cloudscraper’s richly ornamented crown. The book, set in the vividly crumbling Manhattan of the

1970s, centers on a boy who is recruited into his father’s illicit and dangerous architectural salvage business. Small and nimble, the boy is tasked with climbing around the tops of buildings to steal architectural
sculptures right off their façades. The climactic scene I envisioned follows the reluctant son as his obsessive father sends him clambering up the Woolworth’s terra-cotta ornamentation to sever a gargoyle with a power saw.

To rescue the façade, a sixyear, $20 million restoration was undertaken in 1975, ultimately replacing 26,000 of the building’s terra-cotta pieces with precast concrete replicas. But significant corners were cut on the tourelles, which were stripped of protruding terra-cotta and clad with glorified aluminum siding. Among the casualties were 32 gargoyles. So what became of these 32 deposed sculptures? “A large number ended up in a locked closet on the 28th floor under the control of the Woolworth company,” said Timothy Allanbrook, a preservation architect who worked on the 1970s restoration. At the end of the job, he added, the head of one of the dismembered gargoyles—a doglike creature—was presented to him by the project manager. In 1982, Allanbrook spotted a second on sale for $1,800 at an architectural salvage shop.
Until recently, that was all I knew of the whereabouts of the severed gargoyles. But then, on a visit to Suskin’s Woolworth Building office, my eye wandered to a shelf on the wall. There, stored unceremoniously amid old boxes and disordered piles of technical manuals dating back to 1970, was a dog-headed sibling gargoyle of Allanbrook’s. Its mouth was wide open, and its eyes were gazing— forlornly, it seemed to me—at an unglamorous drop ceiling inches above its nose. “That’s the only one we know about,” Suskin said in his gravelly voice. “Whether there are other ones somewhere? TOM FORD ONCE DESCRIBED JULIA RESTOIN ROITFELD AS “EXACTLY WHAT BEAUTY IS.” The compliment came in 2011, five years after Roitfeld became the face of his first fragrance, Black Orchid. She was 25 years old when she got the call. She had just graduated from Parsons, where she studied branding. The role was her first modeling campaign. “Hearing him say that was huge,” she says, “but it’s a lot to live up to.” Roitfeld’s definition of beauty has been crafted over three decades. She grew up in Paris as fashion royalty. Her mom is Carine Roitfeld, who headed French Vogue for 10 years in the early 2000s. Her father is Christian Restoin, the creator of the clothing line Equipment. To Roitfeld, beauty is “the way you carry yourself. It’s the way you smile at people. It’s something that should be contagious, but beyond appearances.” She hopes that her daughter, 4-year-old Romy Nicole, develops a similar mentality. “I always try to boost her confidence,” says Roitfeld. “Once you’re confident, you feel beautiful.” Roitfeld doesn’t need to worry. Romy receives so many birthday party invites, it’s “almost too much of a social calendar for a little girl,” she says. As a kid, Roitfeld didn’t run in the popular crowds. She grew up traveling to photo shoots and going to shows with her mom on weekends, but “the fashion world was so different than it is today,” she says. “It was more casual. We

went to support a designer, and not to show yourself.” She modeled as a child, including a Benetton campaign for French Elle, but her career was informal. “It was very organic,” she says. She participated when her mom needed children on set. “And then I stopped,” she says. “I had a normal childhood.” With no internet or social media, Roitfeld didn’t grasp her mom’s clout until college. “[Her power] never affected me, aside from the fact that she was dressed cooler than the other moms,” she says. “When I was at Parsons, my professor asked if she could come and talk to the fashion students. Roitfeld started school at the Paris affiliate of Parsons, but she soon transferred to the Manhattan campus. She has inherited her parents’ work ethic. She didn’t model during school so that it wouldn’t interfere with her studies. In 2006, at the end of her senior year, she was selected as one of Paper Magazine’s Beautiful People, an honor she considers her big break. Paper co-founder and co-editor Kim Hastreiter recalls first meeting Roitfeld when she hosted a fashion family lunch. Carine, who had been profiled in Paper, attended with Julia and her younger brother Vladimir. Julia was just getting out of school. “She was so cute. I loved her,” says Hastreiter. “There was something about her I can’t put my finger on. To me, the definition of beauty is pretty, real and natural. Julia had all that.” Hastreiter also recalls the family as being down to earth and blind to elitism. “We’re not ‘it’ people,” she says of herself. “We’re scruffy publishers. We’re DIY, and they were all so nice.” Ten years later, Roitfeld is still grateful to Hastreiter. “What I’ve learned the most is to never forget the people who gave you your first chance,” she says, citing advice from Carine. “The Paper Magazine article was my kickstarter. I owe them a lot.” She then scored the Tom Ford campaign. She has been a New Yorker ever since. “The city is a constant challenge,” she says. “New York is a kick in the butt every morning to get things done.” Roitfeld lives on the Upper East Side, close to the F train. She appreciates its convenience. On most days, she wakes up at 6:45 a.m. “I set my alarm for 6:30, but sometimes I snooze,” she says. She gets ready for the day, and then takes Romy to school. Her personal style is inspired by vintage ’60s and ’70s themes. “I don’t consider myself trendy,” she says.

“I like to be classic and timeless. Feminine, and a little bit sex kitten.” Roitfeld spends most days at the office of Carine Roitfeld’s eponymous magazine, CR Fashion Book. Carine started it in 2012, after she left French Vogue. Julia doesn’t write for the magazine, but she likes being surrounded by creative people as she works. She is a freelance art director and model, and the founder and editor of lifestyle website Romy & the Bunnies. The site launched in 2013, soon after Romy’s birth. Roitfeld wants it to evolve into a brand, and not just a platform for editorial content. “I love branding. I enjoy developing a story around a brand and giving it an identity,” Roitfeld says. The website is for the modern mom, but “it has a sense of fashion, a sense of health, a sense of travel. beauty and DIY tutorials. “I began Romy & the Bunnies to inspire moms, but what’s funny is that there are a lot of people who aren’t moms who follow it.” Roitfeld doesn’t lunch. “French people love a long lunch break. I hate it,” she says. At 2:30 p.m., she is back on the Upper East Side to pick up Romy from school. Being there is always her priority. “Once I’m at the office, I’m really focused. I work five or six hours straight and get as much done as possible,” she says of her routine. Balancing work and family time is “a constant dilemma,” she admits. She has a part-time nanny, but prefers to be hands-on with Romy. “Soon she’ll be at school full-time, so I won’t get to see her as much as I do now.” Roitfeld achieves balance by limiting distractions. She doesn’t have her work email synced with her phone. It only lives on her desktop computer at CR Fashion Book’s Tribeca office. It helps her to live in the moment. “Otherwise, I feel like your brain is all over the place. You do everything in a rush,” she says. Earlier this year, Roitfeld deleted Instagram from her phone as an experiment. “It’s terrible how addicted you are to social media,” she says. “But my days became much longer, and you don’t have this fear of missing out.” This year, Roitfeld missed the latter part of New York Fashion Week Fall 2017, as she went to Harbour Island in the Bahamas to spend time with her daughter. “She’s the best person to travel with. I’m very lucky.” Roitfeld enjoys supporting her friends at Fashion Week, but “it’s too much of a scene,” she says. “I would never take my daughter,” a decision that highlights the difference between Fashion Week today and Fashion Week in the 1980s, rather than between her and her mother. Roitfeld shares custody of Romy with her former partner, Swedish-born Croatian model Robert Konjic. He lives in Brooklyn. Like her parents, who have been together for 30 years, the pair never married. But Roitfeld and Konjic broke up in late 2013. They’re still on good terms, she says.
“[My mom’s power] never affected me, aside from the fact that she was dressed cooler than the other moms.” Roitfeld is a self-described homebody. “I love to stay in and watch television,” she says. She just finished The Crown. Up next is The Affair. On weekends when Romy is with her dad, she tries to embrace spontaneity. Her therapy is going to a club and dancing with friends. “You want to go out more when you’re a single mom, because you’re not going to meet someone staying home.” Family is a priority for Roitfeld. A difference between New York and Paris is the amount of time New Yorkers spend outside their homes. “I remember growing up and going to my grandmother’s house for lunch on Sundays,” she says. “I miss that.” New Yorkers are rushed from place to place. Her brother Vladimir lives in New York, too. They see each other often. Eventually, she hopes that Romy will be able to experience having a close relationship with a sibling. Romy is almost 5 years old. Her birthday is May 15. She’s a Taurus, but born on the cusp of Gemini. Roitfeld is a Scorpio. “We’re similar. She’s very honest, and stubborn as well. [Scorpios are] very faithful, but very vindictive.” Carine is a Virgo, “very diplomatic with everyone,” Roitfeld says. Roitfeld hopes that she and Romy have inherited Carine’s grace. “To my mom, there’s no level of importance among people. She’s going to be as nice to the doorman as to the photographers and the assistants.” Roitfeld is teaching her daughter to be polite. She says she gets her greatest sense of achievement when people comment on Romy’s good manners. At the photo shoot for this story at The Carlyle Hotel, Roitfeld chats with everyone on set. A conversation about the negative impact technology has on childcare takes shape. Most have noticed that a lot of parents have their ear buds in while pushing their children in strollers. Kids grow up feeling ignored. Roitfeld won’t let that happen to Romy. BASSO DENNIS BASSO WAS ASKED, What if some ageless, ethereal swan, say a Somers Farkas, were to saunter in here tomorrow? A fabulous woman of impeccable pedigree, a divine patron of the arts with one particular desire. “Dennis, my darling,“ she would purr. “I need a head-turning new number! A coup de théâtre! A show stopper to wear to the American Ballet Theater Spring Gala. The ballet god David Hallberg is back for the first time in three years, and I need to be the belle of that ball.” The notion was barely broached before the famous American furrier/fashion designer was leading his interlocutor by the elbow and parting the racks in his eponymous flagship boutique on Madison Avenue (at 69th Street). “Well, first we’ll find the dress and then we will wrap her in something magnificent,” Basso said as he chose a luminescent taupe gown. “This is so beautiful because it makes an

entrance! Look at this column of sequins, the plunging neckline, and to top it all off, look at the organza skirt with all that gorgeous, beautiful hand-sewn eyelet work and all those bugle beads!” Moving along the racks the maestro continued, “And then I would wrap her in this gorgeous, demure bolero of sable. Just enough to cover the shoulders and also take her seat. Rest it on her lap during the performance and not be bothered by it. Then, of course, she tops it all off with a beautiful jeweled clutch, adds diamond earrings and a bracelet, and she is home free.” It is immediately apparent that Dennis Basso is a master of the art of the sell. It is inherent and part of his immense charm and ever-expanding 35-year-old fashion brand. “I am a designer, a manufacturer and a salesman. I have a true understanding of what I design, and who better than the person who designed it and created it to sell it?” He was holding court near the entrance of his spectacular shop. On one side hung his latest prêt-à-porter, and down the center of the store fitted glass consoles, which appear to float on air, held bejeweled accessories, evening clutches and other such ephemera. The mannequins, on this day, were a symphony of sumptuous ivory. Orgasmic white beaded dresses and an array of broadtail fur coats—-one uber-fabulous one with a lynx collar—line the other wall, and lush capes with fox trim, Russian broadtail and sable, all in black, end the show. “This is one of the largest privately owned stores on Madison Avenue,” he will also be the first to tell you. “Look at it, all of 10,000 square feet!” The three-story store is like an art gallery with its clean lines, white walls and slate gray floors set against matte furniture and lacquered chrome accents. “Keep it simple,” he says. A huge screen at the back— looping video from past fashion shows—is the only bit of razzmatazz. The “merch,” unquestionably, speaks for itself. As it happens, the night before the day of this performance, a white minivan was rammed into a Louis Vuitton store an ocean away on chic Sloane Street in London. The brazen robbers cleared out that designer boutique, in pretty much the same way that three thieves did the Dennis Basso store in what is now part of Madison Avenue retail lore—the Christmas Eve heist of 2016. “They knew the lay of the land,” Basso growled in that signature gravel voice of his. The designer was now seated in his inner sanctum—the fourth-floor office of his commercial townhouse. “Christmas Eve morning at 4:30 a.m., three men broke into the store. It was really quite brazen and shocking. I like to think of this townhouse not just as a business but also my home.” It’s not his home, but the invasion was personal—and devastating. “They knew exactly what they wanted. They took the best of the best—the sable, the chinchilla—and they were in and out in three minutes. On upper Madison Avenue!” They must have been muttering similar words at that Louis Vuitton shop in Knightsbridge. These brazen heists are an emerging fashion trend the business could well do without. As for the American designer, he is holding up well. The loss of thirty fur coats, well over

$12 million in merchandise, does not seem to have diminished his mojo, least of all his fastidious grooming. The impeccably dressed and debonair Mr. Basso wore a windowpane brown and navy custom-made Ermenegildo Zegna cashmere suit as polished as his bespoke John Lobb double-buckle monk-strap shoes. “We have to move on and hope that the New York City detectives will find these men. We will just have to be more vigilant, but it was truly a terrible thing to happen.” Dennis Basso didn’t set out to be in the fur business when he graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology in 1973. His mother, Theresa, was, not surprisingly, a huge influence, when he was growing up in Morristown, New Jersey. “She was a great hostess, and she loved to entertain and she was always, always flawlessly dressed.“ He opened his business in 1983 and staged his very first fashion show that year at the Regency Hotel, with Natalie Cole, Ivana and Donald Trump, and Neil and Leba Sedaka in the front row. The designer is asked to recall his first meeting with one of his most iconic clients, Elizabeth Taylor. You could hear a pin drop all the way in Timbuktu in this very quiet office with its wood-burning fireplace looking out to the Juliet balconies and Madison Avenue. Expensive coffee-table books are everywhere among cherubs, honorary awards, family photos and credenzas. “She came to New York and borrowed some fur shawls I had made from a friend while she was in town. A day later the phone rang and she was cooing about the shawls and asked if I had any capes. I immediately ran over to her duplex at the Plaza Athénée. She kept me waiting in her living room for an hour while José Eber finished doing her hair upstairs. She finally came down, and she just loved the capes and was a faithful client until the day she left us. I used to watch Elizabeth Taylor movies when I was 10 years old.” Today, an image of her dominates his office. As if foreshadowed by the fur heist, the 61-year-old designer was recently asked to make a cameo in the much buzzed about all-female heist flick Ocean’s Eight. “There are at least fifty of my gowns in that movie, and they asked me to appear as myself walking down the red carpet at the Met. That was a lot of fun to be part of and so much fun to see my gowns come alive.” Brand Basso is bullish about 2017. “We are ready to go and have our best year ever, not only with the Dennis Basso brand but the Basso QVC Collection as well. We reach an audience of 100 million homes on QVC, and I love designing something that thousands of women across the United States will be thrilled wearing.” The designer’s latest collection, shown last month, combined “my classic, contemporary luxury with a boho chic edge this season. It’s that rich girl look with a bit of edge to keep it fresh—luxurious and feminine with a bohemian touch.” It’s all about brand evolution, he adds for emphasis, “Especially because I am now also dressing many of the younger influencers, from Rihanna to Nicky Hilton Rothschild.“ It appears astute cygnets know the path to Swan Lake runs through Dennis Basso’s atelier. ✦

LISA KULSON, THE WOMAN BEHIND THEORY, IS HER OWN IDEAL CUSTOMER by Suzanne Weinstock Klein
ucked into a dimly lit table at Sant Ambroeus in the West Village, Theory designer Lisa Kulson is enjoying a quiet moment of reflection. Petite with strong shoulders, long blond hair and little to no makeup, she exudes a bohemian energy that gives away her years living in California. But her sleek, minimalist uniform of a black turtleneck and slim black pants screams no-nonsense New Yorker. Quiet has long been Kulson’s default. “I have not intentionally kept out of the spotlight,” she says. But “on a personal level, I tend to be a private person, and I do not believe in sharing on social media. I am not on Facebook and I have a private Instagram account.” So she’s been the mostly silent force who launched powerhouse brand Theory in 1997 alongside Andrew Rosen and Elie Tahari, yet remains little known even among her peers. Never trumpeting her own success, Kulson left Theory after five years to embark on a journey of personal discovery. Fifteen years later, in another moment of reflection, she decided it was time to return to where she began. But, this time, she is ready to shed her shroud of anonymity and silence. Strengthened by a dramatic, if somewhat mysterious, journey, Lisa Kulson is stepping out of the shadows.
“I’M PERIPATETIC BY NATURE,” Kulson muses. “I’m very adaptable.” Her family bounced around the state of Michigan throughout her childhood, making her unusually comfortable with impermanence and change. Between the ages of 14 and 18 she passed through three elite boarding schools. She then started a business degree at Southern Methodist University in Texas, but left before completing it to attend fashion school in Los Angeles, again leaving without a degree to work full-time for her mentor, California Girl designer Petrina Aberle. “The school told me I couldn’t drape so well so they thought I should switch to merchandising,” Kulson recalls. “But I wanted to be a designer. Petrina said, ‘You don’t need that school. I can teach you more.’ So I have some amazing education but no degrees.”

During that period Kulson met her ex-husband, whom she married at 23. later moving to New York with him. She joined a private label company, where she rose quickly from assistant designer to design director. Meanwhile her marriage faltered and ended. In 1997, Kulson was separated and frustrated with her career, when she was introduced to Andrew Rosen, a son of the garment center legend who made Calvin Klein jeans. The young Rosen was preparing to launch Theory in partnership with Elie Tahari. At that time Theory was no more than the then revolutionary idea to take materials containing lycra out of sportswear and into the professional wardrobes of women. Rosen and Tahari were on the hunt for a designer to bring the vision to life, and Kulson nabbed the role. Rosen believed that well-made, comfortable wardrobe essentials would fly off the shelves without a drop of advertising. He was right. “We went from zero to 100 in no time. It was a huge, phenomenal success,” Kulson says. Despite that, Kulson became restless. The business was wholesale only and she yearned to grow it into a lifestyle business complete with boutiques and extensions into accessories, a path Rosen wasn’t ready to embrace. In addition to being professionally frustrated, she was burning out personally. Maternal by nature, Kulson had dreams of being married and well on her way to having five children but was instead divorced and working around the clock. It’s difficult to imagine many people walking away from Kulson’s level of success but, in 2002, that’s exactly what she did. “I felt so grateful for that opportunity,” Kulson says. “[Andrew, Elie and I] shared a vision and I knew I could make it work. I rolled up my sleeves and I did it. I worked really hard and I loved every second of it. But I also made sacrifices—I didn’t feel it at the time, but I did.” So she left in search of fulfillment, even though it meant leaving behind the business she’d helped build, too.
In 2012, Kulson came back to New York to shed the darkness and negativity she had found herself entrenched in. “I like new beginnings. I like change. I like energy. I needed the energy. I needed some distractions. The energy of New York again, it felt like everything was really positive,” says Kulson, who also needed to return to work. She accepted a part-time job from Andrew Rosen consulting and designing Theory Luxe, a higher-end line exclusive to Japan, as she transitioned from life as a stay-at-home mother back into fast-paced New York fashion. Finally ready for a full-time role again in 2014, Kulson was on the verge of accepting a job in California when Rosen swooped in and offered her the role of creative director at Theory.
STRENGTHENED BY A DRAMATIC, IF SOMEWHAT MYSTERIOUS, JOURNEY, LISA KULSON IS STEPPING OUT OF THE SHADOWS.
KULSON MOVED TO ITALY and launched an eponymous fashion label, which she shuttered in 2007 as the world lurched into a recession. But she also found love. She met a Hungarian man with whom she had her daughter, Louise Juliette, aka Loulou, now 9. They moved to California, and she settled into domestic bliss as a stay-at-home mother before the relationship fell apart in dramatic fashion. “It’s tumultuous to have someone in your life who is your child’s father, and he’s very present, and you have a happy life, and then things change. That’s all I’ll really say,” Kulson allows, alluding to the deeply distressing series of events that left her a single mother. “I went through something difficult, but it could have been so much worse. During that time the Japanese tsunami happened. How could I sit and feel sorry for myself about my life when I’m healthy, have a family, have an amazing little girl and I’m reading about this horrific thing happening in a place where I have close friends. I just put it in perspective.”

KULSON RETURNED TO HER role leading Theory a different person in many ways. “Owning a business and becoming a mother are two of the biggest things that make me who I am today,” Kulson says. Both were experiences that involved success and failure, joy and sorrow. And in those ups and downs she found a strength and clarity of direction that she applies to her work. “Having your own business, you don’t have time to make mistakes. You need to get things done. You need the right people in the right places. Being a mother, I don’t waste my time. I can get done in eight hours what the old me got done in ten. Distractions, they don’t happen.” Kulson wasn’t alone; Theory had changed as well. Since she’d left, the fashion industry had experienced a seismic shift. Fast fashion emerged, making retail more competitive, online shopping matured, and the lifestyle-focused vertical integration that Kulson championed 15 years prior became the norm for contemporary brands—Theory included. But as the brand sought its place in the new order, its identity became muddled. Theory hired avant-garde, high-fashion designer Olivier Theyskens as artistic director in 2009; many thought him an odd fit for the brand. Now, Kulson is bringing discipline and focus to Theory as she has to her own life. “Business was good; it wasn’t great,” she says. “Theory was having an identity crisis. It needed to go back to its roots—essential pieces.” Kulson’s Theory is an expression of how women, including the working women it is known for dressing, want to look and feel in their clothes. From cut to fabric to color to just the right touch of trendiness, Kulson makes clothes that make sense in a modern wardrobe, clothes in which women like herself can simply live their lives. Despite two awesome responsibilities—raising a daughter as a single mother and leading Theory into the future—Kulson exudes a striking serenity. “The resiliency of going through trying times and adverse situations we have in our lives, they just make you forget about the superfluous things that are creating undue stress,” Kulson says reflectively. “I don’t take anything for granted. I don’t take a day for granted.” ✦

A moment with one of the city’s top real estate experts . . . 4TH QUARTER 2016 New development closings, as a result of contracts signed well over a year ago, pushed the overall average Manhattan apartment price to a new record in the fourth quarter. At $2,110,556, the average price was 9 percent higher than a year ago. The number of sales was 13 percent lower than a year ago. New developments, which comprised 9 of the top 10 sales in the fourth quarter, sold for an average of $4,709,602. This was a new record, and was 51% higher than the fourth quarter of 2015. The resale average price of $1,512,074 was 1 percent lower than a year ago, while the median price rose 2 percent to $920,000. While the headline number implies prices are still increasing, a closer look at the data tells us otherwise. Looking at just resales, we see a market where the average price has been drifting lower for the past few quarters. Resale listings spent 10 percent longer on the market than in the fourth quarter of 2015, and apartments are selling at the lowest selling-to-asking price ratio in more than three years. Buyer hesitancy and seller overpricing have led to sharp rises in inventory, particularly for larger apartments, which increases the need for price adjustments for many listings. ✦

eauty is in the eye of the beholder, and Dr. Marina Peredo can grant it to you. Dr. Peredo, who recently appeared on Fox News to talk about new beauty treatments, is one of New York’s leading dermatologists. Dr. Peredo has also been seeing an increase in male patients. The three most popular procedures among her male clients include Kybella for getting rid of the double chin, Cool Sculpting to trim and reduce body fat, and Botox. For those clients who value their privacy, Dr. Peredo even has a private entrance for V.I.P.s, where they can come in, get their consultation, have their treatment and then head out. Dr. Peredo prides herself on her noninvasive, nonsurgical procedures, and she knows it’s what more of today’s customers want too. “These nonsurgical procedures, like fillers and body sculpting, are less costly, and no scarring or anesthesia are involved,” she says. “If you end up not liking something, like your fillers, it’s reversible. It seems that everywhere you go on the island, there are little reminders to take it easy and focus on the positive. Bermuda is only 21 square miles and evokes a smalltown feel. My best friend Arielle and I met locals who shared their favorite places to spend time. Ask chef William Drabble to dish out his delectable tasting menu, but please don’t drop your fork into your griddled cod if Halle Berry pops in, as she stays at the charming club (it’s also a hotel). After your poached Granny Smith apples, head back to the play, which has some drop-dead special effects that I won’t spoil for you. No doubt these magical shows will be sold out for eons. Don’t buy a bag that weighs or costs more than its contents. I routinely speed through “handbag” departments picking up and immediately putting down bags that don’t pass the heaviness test. This enables me to shop without looking at price tags. I use the word “handbag” advisedly. A purse that requires a dedicated hand is a purse that takes up one too many body parts. If you want to lift weights, do it at home with your personal trainer. If you don’t mind growing old with one shoulder shorter than the other and having knobby, arthritic hands, be my guest. Buy that Chanel Large Boy or Hermès Kelly bag. Even worn-out, it will appreciate in value on eBay. But don’t come crying to me when your acupuncturist can’t cure you even after his or her bill exceeds that of your biannual Botox and Restylane injections.

ventually someone is going to ask, “What’s the most you’ve ever spent on a handbag?” It’s like asking, “Have you ever had an abortion?” “What?” is a good response. Except that answer begs for a follow-up question like, “Seriously, just between us?” For which you suddenly develop a foreign accent and say, “In my country, we have pockets sewn in all our clothes.” Because, honestly, some purses cost the same as a new American pickup truck without the equivalent value in sentiment or even at CarMax. A purse doesn’t stay quiet on your wrist or shoulder: it shouts out what you paid for it. A purse costs more than its contents, including cash, credit cards, smartphone, laptop, $60 lipsticks and a BMW key ring. A dizzying five-figure price makes me consider adopting an orphan child, which would be like going back to kindergarten the day after graduating Harvard Law School—with the equivalent loss of income. So, I have three rules about purses.
Do buy a “stealth” bag (i.e., one that eludes radar). Check out Baudelaire’s guidance to aesthetes: “Whether men (or women) are called elegant, incredible, lions or dandies, they are all representative of the need…to combat and destroy triviality.” Parentheses mine. Okay Baudelaire, call me “elegant” and “incredible:” I don’t want 99 percent of the people I pass on the street to recognize my handbag. And I find changing bags a waste of time. Add color at your own peril. Color necessitates changing purses and I don't have time for that.
ALTERNATIVES An always classy, affordable alternative is the Longchamp Le Pliage tote in black (winter) or ivory (summer). It’s $190, $169 if you shop at Century 21. Again, employing my “mother ship/lifeboat” practice, I use a tote with same color Le Pliage “pouchette” cosmetics bag ($55—occasionally on sale for $40) repurposed for casual evenings.
