Seventh grade politics aside, when I bumped into Matt at a party shortly after Etsy went public, he told me he’d decided to leave and start up his own nonprofit dedicated to helping small-business owners.

Matt believes firmly in restructuring traditional businesses to be more compassionate and ethical with a long-term view that this will improve the world. His Good Work Institute is a 21st-century alternative to a conventional business school education.

Around the same time, I went to an all-day conference at the Ford Foundation

The story starts with Matthew Stinchcomb, the cofounder of Etsy.com, who is an old friend of mine. (And I mean a really old friend: we met in seventh grade and rode the bus together. Full disclosure: I remember calling Matt and asking him out. He gently turned me down but, ever the intrepid reporter, I wasn’t satisfied with his answer, “Why?” I asked. for Solidaire, the direct action group set up by Leah Hunt-Hendrix. I was very impressed by the caliber of people attending the conference. It was a gathering of millennials, activists and some pretty senior philanthropists. (Agnes Gund, one of Leah’s mentors, was there.) Whether or not you believe Solidaire’s mission is the right way to affect change, Leah’s conviction that having a role in making a better society is more fulfilling than having extreme wealth is refreshing and invigorating.

And lastly, the head of the Ford Foundation, Darren Walker, and I met at a wonderful Christmas party given last year by Jay McInerney and Anne Hearst.

He also spoke at the Solidaire conference.

As someone who has had more a traditional career path than Matt and Leah (Darren was a banker for years before moving into philanthropic work), he is nonetheless taking the Ford Foundation, one of the nation’s oldest institutions, in new and exciting directions.

or this year’s A-List and Power issue we decided that it was time to shake things up a bit. Welcome to our “philanthropy disrupters” issue. According to Harvard Business School professor Clayton Christensen, “A disruption displaces an existing market, industry, or technology and produces something new and more efficient and worthwhile. It is at once destructive and creative.”

Our power covers this year, and we have three of them, are all people thinking outside the box about the new ways to address philanthropy in the 21st century.

One other disrupter I would like to mention is photographer Brandon Stanton and his Humans of New York campaign for the Pediatrics Department of Memorial Sloane Kettering (MSK) Cancer Center.

Stanton’s crusade against injustice (and his sense that what could possibly be more unjust than children with cancer) led him to raise millions for MSK in just three weeks.

He chose to use his 5.9 million Instagram followers to highlight the plight of the hospital’s doctors, parents and patients alike in his crusade to find a cure for those rare and heartbreaking childhood diseases.

(We also asked Brandon to be on the cover, but he prefers to stay behind the camera instead of being in front of it). What he did was groundbreaking, and other institutions should sit up and take note.

I’m thrilled to have had the chance to work with this group of innovators. Their messages might be different but their goals are the same: fixing the world. So, here’s to friendships made on the seventh grade bus!

CELEBRATIONS APLENTY Inside two of the most buzzed about soirees of the season

I

n a summer that seemed somehow to be more abundantly beautiful and glorious than any other (am I getting older and more appreciative? Maybe.), two events rose above all others, aesthetically and soulfully.

The achingly beautiful Lydia Hearst and the achingly funny Chris Hardwick (also quite cute) united in marriage at a ceremony at the Langham Huntingdon in Pasadena that combined both qualities. Patricia Hearst, mother of the bride, oversaw the preparations, though from afar…Africa, to be precise. She also provided grandmother Catherine’s engagement ring for Chris’ proposal. And Christian Siriano designed Lydia’s ethereal ombré pink dress and Mom’s regal blue one. Though the unconventional components (a bowling bridal dinner, zombie waiters, a robot ring bearer, and cowboy-booted female guests) were at first confusing to all but their bosom buddies, everything crystallized delightfully. Chris’ father had been a champion bowler; the makeup artist from his TV show, Talking Dead, gave zombie makeovers to the waiters as the wedding gift; and the couple loves all things sci-fi and western. The original Star Wars droid, R5-D4, rolled down the aisle, carrying the ring. When he conked out midway, the comedian Seth Green sprang out to clear the rose petals, thinking that was the problem. Few of us knew that this was a scene from the movie, and that the able Jawas would do a relay and bring the ring to the groom. The family’s minister, Father Ted Dumke, read from Corinthians (“When I was a child…When I became a Gayfryd Steinberg and Michael Shnayerson man, I put the acts of childhood behind me”), at which point Chris turned to the congregation, who burst out laughing. As Patricia said, “His career depends on childish behavior.” Among the 400 guests were James Corden and Julia Carey, Sarah Silverman; Lydia Hearst and Chris Hardwick an array of Hearsts, including matron of honor, Gillian Hearst Simonds; Anne, her children Amanda and Randy, and Lisa Hearst Hagerman; and Kip Forbes, Kathy Hilton, Craig Ferguson, and Milly de Cabrol. And the registry? A carefully selected list of worthy charities.

On our home coast, George Farias once again blew every Kathy Rayner and George Farias other summer party out of the water with his American Summer, One More Time dinner. Collaborating with David Monn, his longtime go-to event designer, they transformed his already beautiful Lily Pond Lane property into an enchanted garden and dining pavilion. One long table, covered by a single piece of hem-stitched linen, seated 86 guests. The 20-feet pitched tent was swathed in bamboo and laced with hanging ferns. George’s own silver tureens and julep cups lined the table and surrounded his china, purchased in London from Lady Annabel Astor. David’s ingenious table cards instructed guests to follow the dot on a table plan to a personalized potted plant. Peter Duchin’s music played Anne Hearst McInerney Darren Walker and through our caviar pie starter and lamb dinner. The grand piano gave us and Patricia Hearst Shaw Holly Peterson a clue of the after-dinner performance. George had read about Timo Andres, a Pulitzer Prize nominee, in the New Yorker, and asked if he would consider performing for us. He did one better, composing for this evening a special piece titled “Bruckner Boulevard” (to be sure, a long way from Lily Pond Lane, though it may have resonated for some). Among the lucky revelers: Kathy and Billy Rayner, Estrellita and Dan Brodsky, Caryn Zucker, Susan Stroman, Robert A.M. Eleanor Balfour Launches Namesake Label

W

hat better way to celebrate the start of a new season than with a piece from a new fashion line? Designer Eleanor Balfour has recently launched her eponymous brand, a labor of love after working under the tutelage of Oscar de la Renta.

“I love traveling and really look to the local architecture and color palettes when I’m walking around a new town,” says Balfour of her inspiration for her collections, which she showcased at a Moda Operandi trunk show in September. “That probably informs the general feel more than anything. For each individual style, I’m always designing with a particular girl in mind: what would she wear? All the designs are named after someone I know.”

Balfour is a direct descendant of Arthur James Balfour, the 1st Earl of Balfour and architect of the 1917 Balfour Declaration.

But her style aesthetic comes from her mother's side, and particularly grandmother Countess Gabrielle Goëss. “She collected some amazing clothes in her life,” says Balfour. The two share a love of Yves Saint Laurent.

Balfour studied art and design at Central Saint Martins college in London, and fashion design at Parsons in Manhattan. In addition to working with Oscar de la Renta, Balfour worked for Stephanie von Watzdorf at her label Figue. “Eventually, I took the plunge and started on my own,” says Balfour.

WHERE NIXON MINGLED WITH MONET

T

o walk through the aristocratic enclave of Sutton Place and Sutton Place South, built on a midtown Manhattan bluff overlooking the East River, is to feel the wealth and influence hidden discreetly behind the genteel façades of the district’s townhouses and apartment buildings.

Though the doings within tend to remain private, now and again the discussions that take place in these gracious residences are momentous enough to change the face of the city.

One such conversation took place in 1972, when James Hester, then the president of New York University, was enjoying a drink in the sprawling apartment of Elmer Bobst at 1 Sutton Place South. The university was struggling financially, and Hester told his host, a pharmaceutical executive and philanthropist, that he hoped to make NYU “a beacon university for the nation,” but that the school lacked the wherewithal to complete a major research library. Bobst, who never attended college but believed strongly in education, excused himself and went into his own wood-paneled library, according to Dr. Mazen Kamen, a nephew of Bobst who heard the account from his aunt Mamdouha, the philanthropist’s second wife. When Bobst

returned, he said to the university president, “ ‘This is a check for $11 million: I want you to establish the library,’” Dr. Kamen recounted.

“Dr. Hester dropped his jaw and said, ‘Are you serious?,’ and my uncle said, ‘I’m very serious.’ ” The 12-story Elmer Holmes Bobst Library, designed by Philip Johnson and Richard Foster, was dedicated soon after on Washington Square South.

Built in 1926 after the designs of Cross & Cross and Rosario Candela, the dean of prewar New York City apartment house architects, 1 Sutton Place South is known as one of the most luxurious apartment buildings in Manhattan. Apartment 8A, the Bobst residence, occupies the entire eighth floor of the building’s southern wing, and it has all the hallmarks of the golden era of the city’s apartment houses: gracious proportions, woodburning marble fireplaces, servants’ call boxes, and herringbone-patterned wooden floors with buttons that once summoned the butler with a tap of a white shoe.

Over the past few decades, the apartment served as the repository of major artwork and jewelry, as well as the setting for presidential visits. Mr. Bobst was an early and major financial backer of Richard M. Nixon, and the two men’s families were very close, sometimes dining together on Thanksgiving and Christmas. The Nixon daughters called Mr. Bobst Uncle Elmer, and after Mamdouha Bobst, a public health advocate and former Lebanese delegate to the United Nations, fell in love with Tricia Nixon’s dog in the 1960s, Mr. Nixon gave Mrs. Bobst a white Yorkshire terrier for Christmas. The Bobsts’ oceanfront Palm Beach mansion, which Corcoran sold for Mrs. Bobst’s estate in June for $13 million, even had a “Nixon wing,” which the Bobsts built expressly for hosting the president and his wife.

The president returned the favor. On his 85th birthday, Mr. Bobst was the guest of honor at a White House dinner attended by 100 people. Although jewelry valued at $100,000 had earlier been stolen from the bedroom safe of the Bobsts’ Sutton Place South apartment, Mrs. Bobst was far from unadorned when she arrived: She wore a platinum and diamond tiara created for the marriage of Queen Geraldine and King Zog I of Albania in 1938.

Mr. Bobst died in 1978, and after Mrs. Bobst passed away last November her jewelry and art collection were auctioned at Sotheby’s to benefit the philanthropic works of the Bobst Foundation. (The tiara fetched $225,000.) The proceeds from the sale of the apartment will also go to charity, said Dr. Kamen, who sits on the foundation’s board.

The major paintings owned by the Bobsts—including works by Monet, Bonnard, and Chagall—caused something of a stir when they went under the hammer at Sotheby’s in May, as many of them had been hidden from public view for decades. But Dr. Kamen had the rare pleasure of seeing them on a daily basis in the early 1980s, when he lived in the Bobst apartment with his aunt while studying medicine at NYU. 44 | AVENUE MAGAZINE • OCTOBER 2016

A midcareer modern painting of a village by Marc Chagall hung above a credenza in the library. These paintings might not have survived undamaged were it not for Dr. Kamen’s alacrity in responding to a frantic 3 a.m. phone call in the early 1990s. While Mrs. Bobst was in Palm Beach one winter, the superintendent of 1 Sutton Place South called Dr. Kamen (by then living in his own home) with the troubling news that water was seeping down the walls of the Bobst apartment from a burst pipe upstairs.

Dr. Kamen, who had the keys to the Bobsts’ alarm, raced to the scene.

“My aunt freaked, and I was like a maniac getting these paintings into the kitchen, the only place where there was no leak,” Dr. Kamen recalled with a laugh. “Needless to say, the insurance company thanked me a lot.”

One Sutton Place South was built at a time when the lavish palaces of Fifth Avenue were falling before the wrecking ball, and the social and real estate worlds of New York were aflutter with the increasing popularity of co-operatives. “The mansions gone?” asked the New York Times. “No, they have simply moved—moved into apartment houses.”

The ascendance of the co-operative apartment building gathered momentum after World War I, and in 1926 demand for co-ops reached a new peak. By that time, $200 million had been invested in co-operative apartment houses in the city, chiefly south of 59th Street and east of Fifth Avenue.

The renaissance of the Sutton Place neighborhood was jump-started in part by the family of steel baron Henry Phipps, a partner of Andrew Carnegie, which razed a coal-storage facility and put up 1 Sutton Place South, a 13-story-plus-penthouse building, on the full block along the East River between East 56th and 57th Streets. Built of redbrick and limestone, the neo-Georgian building has a porte cochere reminiscent

The building’s spacious garden overlooking the East River, a magnificent greensward accessible through glass doors in the grand lobby, has in recent years again been the focal point of sustained neighborhood attention. Built atop the roof of the East River Drive in 1939, the garden has been the exclusive preserve of the co-operative’s residents ever since.

But that private space will soon shrink considerably. Most of the garden, it turns out, sits on city-owned land that had been leased to the co-op for just 50 years. When the lease expired in 1990, the co-op kept quiet, continuing to enjoy private use of the garden and even swearing prospective apartment buyers to secrecy on the matter.

Ultimately, however, the city elders got wise. This fall, the city plans to begin construction of a long-delayed, publicly accessible waterfront promenade on some 10,000 square feet of the land once enjoyed exclusively by the co-op, according to a Parks Department spokesman.

The new public parkland, funded by $1 million each from the City Council and the 1 Sutton Place South co-op, will connect existing pocket parks at the ends of East 56th and 57th Streets. To the west of the new parkland, the co-op will retain private use of a roughly 4,000-square-foot garden: not quite the majestic greensward once enjoyed by the Phippses and Astors, but still—given the rarity of such lush private spaces in Manhattan—not too shabby. ✦ John Freeman Gill’s first novel, The Gargoyle Hunters, will be published

of Fifth Avenue palaces, and a gracious Italian Renaissance–style entrance with three arches whose keystones are richly carved with mythological characters. The co-operative was an instant success, selling out in January 1927, by which time land values east of 57th Street and First Avenue had tripled in three years. Sutton Place had arrived.

From the beginning, 1 Sutton Place South was unabashedly exclusive. Henry Phipps’ four children all took up residence in the building, along with some of their high-society friends, and a 1931 advertisement in the New Yorker noted that all tenants “must be socially acceptable to the directors.” Consequently, the building bristled with Astors, Vanderbilts, Hamiltons and Morgans, along with the likes of publishing titan Major G. H. Putnam.

In 1941, during World War II, the neighborhood held its breath after a mysterious package was delivered to Godfrey Haggard, the British consul general, who lived in an eighth-floor apartment in 1 Sutton Place South, possibly the residence later purchased by the Bobsts. The consul called the police, and before long the area was swarming with patrol cars, a police emergency truck and five fire engine companies. Police lines were established all along the street, while the fireboat Thomas Willett took up position on the East River.

The emergency squad set up a large container of oil in the building’s private rear garden, and after the package was gingerly lowered into it, men of the police technical laboratory deployed their fluoroscope.

Around this time, the consul received a letter from Nathalie Sedgwick Colby, the ex-wife of a former U.S. secretary of state, telling the consul to keep an eye out for an early Easter gift she was sending him: six dozen eggs laid by her own hens. When the consul ran out to the garden to

ounded 11 years ago, Etsy, the online craft marketplace, is now a household name. But just prior to its launch, Matthew Stinchcomb, Etsy’s soon-to-be vice president of values and impact, was successfully engaged with his rock band, the French Kicks.

Stinchcomb was living in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, at the time. The band had just broken up.

His roommate Robert Kalin had decided to found Etsy as an artisanal answer to eBay, where artists could sell their wares. Kalin was also new to the world of online businesses, getting his start when he offered to make a website for a restaurant that his landlord owned, in order to make rent. He didn’t mention to his landlord that he’d never made a website before.

When Etsy was still in its infancy, Kalin asked Stinchcomb to essentially be the company’s marketing department.

“And I said, ‘I don’t know anything about marketing,’ ” Stinchcomb recalls recently in an interview in Crown Heights, not far from where Etsy was started. “And Rob said, ‘Perfect.’ ” There was nothing immediate in Stinchcomb’s background to suggest that he’d be suited to the job. Originally a ninth-generation native of the Washington, D.C. area (his eighth-great-grandfather, Nathaniel Stinchcomb came to Maryland in 1660) Stinchcomb attended the Potomac School before graduating in 1997 from Oberlin College. (He has one brother, Josh Stinchcomb, who has also triumphed in the digital marketplace. He oversees all branded content at Condé Nast.)

After school, Stinchcomb was living out the great American dream of being young and in a rock band. Once described by the New York Times as, “Meticulously rumpled, compulsively flirtatious with man, woman and beast alike, he sings lead on the classic rock and soul numbers and plays rhythm guitar with sloppy panache.” His natural charisma seems to have served him well in his new role, and while the other founders eventually left Etsy.com, Stinchcomb stuck it out, helping turn the company into the world’s only publicly traded benefit corporation (b-corp) and guiding its philanthropic endeavors, holding the title of Etsy’s Vice President of Values and Impact.

The goal of the Good Work Institute is to take some of the progress that had been made at Etsy and transplant it to businesses across the greater New York region.

I

n early 2015, while still at Etsy.com, Stinchcomb founded the independent nonprofit Etsy.org. He left Etsy.com six months later to run Etsy.org, which he renamed the Good Work Institute in August 2016 to avoid confusion with Etsy.com. “It sounds a little bit Bible-y, but that’s not how I mean it,” Stinchcomb says.

The Good Work Institute is a kind of quasi business school that works with companies throughout New York State on developing socially responsible goals, and holds them accountable for following through. A lot of major companies take a cynical view of their social impact, with the mentality being “we’ll do good, so long as we can keep making money.” Stinchcomb’s main charitable contribution has been to call their bluff.

“In general,” he said, “my belief is that the business world is stuck in that space of ‘doing well by doing good.’

You can still make a ton of money and you can do it in a way that’s good. But if you have less packaging on a bottle of water, is that really good? I don’t think business people are really asking the question ‘Does the world need what I’m making?’ ‘Is the world better than it would be if I weren’t here?’ These are the questions I think we need to be asking ourselves.”

Beginning in 2011, Stinchcomb started thinking about how businesses could work differently. At the time, he was overseeing Etsy’s values and impact department, which he described as an internal consulting firm. He decided to write a new, and very long, company mission statement, which he can still recite from memory.

(Stinchcomb, after doing so, described it as “really wonky.”) He eventually shortened the mission to: “reimagine commerce in ways that build a more fulfilling and lasting world.”

Most corporations have a corporate social responsibility (CSR) department. Stinchcomb thought of them as an empty marketing tool. (“BP became ‘Beyond Petroleum,’ but they’re still awful,” he said.)

Stinchcomb wanted to rehink business as an important component of local economies, rather than a place that simply sells stuff. With this in mind, Etsy has recently committed to transitioning to using 100 percent renewable electricity by 2020 at its Brooklyn headquarters. The company has also announced a six-month paternity leave policy. Since the very beginning, Etsy has prided itself on transparency, making earnings reports readily available to the public.

ow, Stinchcomb is able to continue to instill those values into the community as the executive director of the Good Work Institute.

When initially founded as Etsy.org, the company received start-up capital in the form of company stock, but it remained independent from Etsy.

The goal of the Good Work Institute is to take some of the progress that had been made at Etsy and transplant it to businesses across the greater New York region. He sees the business world as existing on a scale going from “degenerative” (“the pharmaceutical guy who jacks up prices”) to “compliance” (“How do I get my company in compliance with government standards, but not at the expense of profits?”) to “less bad” (“we’re not going to change what we do but we’re going to do it in the least bad way we can”) to “sustainable” (“neither bad nor good”) to “regenerative.” Most companies are “less bad,” Stinchcomb said. His mission is to push business further toward the positive end of the spectrum.

The Good Work Institute runs a six-month fellowship program in two regions along the Hudson River, with an expansion to a third region planned for next year. Each firm proposes a goal, and makes a commitment to achieving that goal in the six-month timeframe. “We are reimagining traditional business education by prioritizing compassion, wisdom and ethical integrity, over growth, competitiveness or profit maximization,” says Stinchcomb. “We aim to develop the whole person behind each enterprise, and help them make decisions that honor all the people and places they impact.” Ultimately, the Good Work Institute seeks to make all of its educational resources and techniques freely available online so that similar initiatives can be proposed and implemented around the world.

As one example, Stinchcomb cited a participant called Ovenly, a Brooklyn bakery that also has a second location in Manhattan. The business made a commitment to hiring formerly incarcerated people, and developing job training programs for them. The company’s founder wants to connect with other local businesses to commit to hiring ex-convicts and help develop the training programs, both as a way of cutting costs and as a corrective to business practices that largely shy away from employing from this particular demographic.

“That to me is the right kind of thinking,” Stinchcomb said. “Changing not just how you do business, but also changing the potential for the whole community to do business in a different way.” ✦

LEAH Hunt-Hendrix On Taking a Page from Occupy Wall Street with Solidaire

hat can a member of the elite 1 percent do to bring about more economic equality and social justice? That is one of the animating questions of Leah Hunt-Hendrix’s young life, and it is one the 33-year-old has answered by taking a creative approach with philanthropy.

The granddaughter of Texas oil and gas billionaire H.L. Hunt (whose life provided inspiration for the J. R. Ewing character on Dallas), Leah grew up privileged on Fifth Avenue. She attended Sacred Heart, where the Hiltons were among her schoolmates and where, she says, “the pressure was to be as wealthy as possible.” Eventually, she came to the realization that extreme wealth and the competition for it, rather than making people happy, was instead isolating them and causing them a great deal of strife. She had seen it in her own family and witnessed it with her friends.

A brief move to New Mexico at age 11, where some of her classmates lacked the benefit of indoor plumbing, opened her eyes, and she had trouble squaring the poverty she had witnessed with the extremes of materialism she experienced in New York. She lived in the lap of luxury, with trappings that included a yacht. Still her parents, best-selling authors and relationship therapists Harville Hendrix and Helen LaKelly Hunt, were deep thinkers. Her mother is a pioneering philanthropist who helped start the New York Women’s Foundation and the Dallas Women’s Foundation. As she matured, Leah’s intellectual life made her question the very structures that allowed her to have so much while others had so little.

he had always been a big reader; her father had started her off on reading philosophy at a young age. It accustomed Leah to asking the big questions early on, questions, like what does it mean live a life worth living? Eventually, her restless intellect brought her to Princeton where she got a PhD in religion ethics and politics, and where she studied with Cornel West, among other luminaries. Writing a dissertation on the concept of solidarity further helped her distill her thinking, which is both political and very personal.

“Relationships are what make you happy,” she says. “Relationships, a sense of purpose and a sense of community.”

Galvanized in part by the Arab Spring, the Occupy Wall Street movement and anti-austerity protests in Europe, Leah wondered what her role in producing the sort of structural changes in society she had become convinced were necessary might be. She came to the conclusion that she needed to organize within her own community. In 2012, she cofounded the Solidaire Network, which she describes as “a way for people with a lot of privilege to find a role in the social movements of our time.” That role is, naturally, providing funding for grassroots activist groups. Solidaire is a membership organization, with a $15,000 price of admission, and it funds everything from Black Lives Matter groups to OUR Walmart—which helped get Walmart workers a raise—to groups fighting against climate change and for immigration rights. Solidaire especially seeks out organizations that are “new, experimental and not foundation ready,” Leah says. They also look to fund Black-led organizations in particular to redress the startling stat that less that 2 percent of philanthropy goes to such groups.

f addressing what she sees as structural racism in the world of philanthropic world and funding groups that fight for a more equitable distribution of wealth seems like a paradox for an heiress, Leah understands, but she does not see it that way. “Having a role in making a better society is more fulfilling than having extreme wealth,” she says. “Being wealthy can feel isolating. We’re trying to find a way for people to be connected to the society around them, and to the communities that are impacted by structural inequities. It can be scary to admit that our system is broken, and people may be worried, ‘am I going to lose everything?’ But it does not need to be scary. It can be exciting.”

Her role in funding radical social movements has won Leah plaudits from one of her heroes, Katrina vanden Heuvel, editor, publisher and part owner of The Nation and author of several books. “Leah is a remarkable figure,” vanden Heuvel says. “She has displayed grace, skill and boldness in forging a community of affluent people committed to funding transformational, systemic change. Leah understands that these times of unprecedented inequality demand not only nimbly moving resources to support social movements but also shifting the paradigm of philanthropy.”

Longtime family friend Abigail Disney is similarly impressed, but somehow not surprised.

“I’ve known Leah since she was a very young woman, and there is something so elegantly consistent about what she does now with who she was back then,” Disney, a filmmaker and philanthropist herself, says. “She was always thoughtful, reflective, consistent with her convictions even when convictions are inconvenient.” Disney also hails Solidaire as a “burst of new thinking from someone who grew up with the old thinking and knows it is time to turn the page.” ✦

arren Walker’s office is covered in paper. Bookshelves line the perimeter.

They’re full. A long table sits in the middle. Piles of books hide the surface. Evicted by Matthew Desmond sits on top. It’s a call for the United States to fix the housing system. The office has two walls of windows. One set looks into the atrium of the Ford Foundation building, which has been designated a New York City landmark. The others look down onto the street below.

The trip to Walker’s office involves a front desk check-in, a wait in a first-floor room, an offer of water, an elevator ride to the 10th floor and a few moments of sitting just outside an administrator’s office. Then, Walker opens his door. He exudes warmth. His greeting disarms the formality of the setup.

“Darren has unmatched energy, and he uses it very wisely,” says Jo Carole Lauder, who has known Walker for 10 years. She is the chairman of the Foundation for Art & Preservation in Embassies (FAPE). He is the vice president. “He connects with everyone he meets, and he follows through. He responds to people in a more positive way than I’ve ever seen before, and he just walks into a room and makes it better.”

As the president of the Ford Foundation, Walker has received numerous accolades. None of them have left him jaded. He was named on Time magazine’s annual 100 Most Influential People in the World list in 2016; has received 10 honorary degrees and was awarded the Distinguished Alumnus Award by his alma mater, the University of Texas at Austin—the school’s highest honor.

On a Tuesday in late August, our interview was his chief focus. Walker never broke eye contact. It’s hard to imagine him ever being sidetracked.

t the Ford Foundation, Walker’s mission is to create a more fair global society. “Among the greatest injustices today is the criminal justice system in this country, which is inherently biased by design,” he says. Fighting that bias is one of the chief projects that Walker has taken on.

The Ford Foundation is the nation’s second-largest philanthropy, awarding grants to institutions, projects and individuals. Established in 1936 with an initial gift of $25,000 from Edsel Ford, son of automotive giant Henry Ford, the Ford Foundation is now the steward of a $12 billion endowment, making $500 million in grants around the world each year. Throughout its history, the foundation has helped fund the ideas of such visionaries as Margaret Mead, James Baldwin, Muhammad Yunus, Gloria Steinem and Condoleezza Rice.

“He’s very correct in a funny, old-fashioned way, which is something we need desperately right now,” says Lauder. “He knows right from wrong, and he lives his life that way. He really tries to help people.”

In a blog posted on the Ford Foundation’s website last November, Walker announced his evolving strategy for the organization, called “FordForward.” Fighting inequality remains of paramount importance, but the new focus is on helping organizations achieve long-term success with a “more coherent and interconnected grant-making program—one that seeks to do fewer things better, rather than more at less than our best.” Earlier that year, Walker also shifted the priorities of the Ford Foundation to be on six key program areas—civic engagement and government; creativity and free expression; gender, ethnic and racial justice; inclusive economics; internet freedom; and youth opportunity and learning. The initiative has led to more comprehensive assistance for some programs, but it also means fewer grants are offered overall. With more than 100,000 applications per year, the Ford Foundation is able to fulfill roughly 2 percent of said requests, and Walker favors those that can have the greatest impact on the greatest number of people.

If he could only award grants to organizations based on their answer to one question, Walker sees the response to “What change do you seek in the world and what do you propose to do to contribute to that change?” as the most important.

urrently, the change that Walker would like to impact is the inequality in the criminal justice system. On a personal level within the Ford Foundation, Walker hires formerly incarcerated men and women into a company internship program. Outside the confines of the Midtown East office, he and the Ford Foundation are also working on a program called “Ban the Box,” whereby employers wouldn’t be able to ask about a person’s criminal past until later in the hiring process. “We don’t want to ban asking the question,” clarifies Walker. “But to not have the fact that someone has been convicted of a crime automatically disqualify them from consideration.”

The private sector has a positive influence on the public good.

“Every business in this city contributes to social impact by employing people,” says Walker. But beyond that, he adds, “I think businesses need to think about ways in which they can modify their practices to insure that they are more inclusive in who they employ.

“I believe that it’s possible to harness some of that creativity, ingenuity and innovation [in the private sector] for social good,” continues Walker. “One way is through impact investing, which is what we think of a triple-bottom-line investing—investing in a way that generates a financial return, a social return and an environmental return.” Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and Bank of America are at the forefront of this movement, notes Walker.

“More recently, we’ve seen the amount of private capital being invested in impact investing grow, and I think we’re going to see it grow at an accelerated pace in the future,” he says, citing Larry Fink at BlackRock as a leader in this sphere.

A potential danger to the future of doing good, however, is technology. “The risk of activism on social media is that it can give a false sense of engagement, because engagement in social change requires more than clicking a mouse on your computer,” he says.

The phenomenon of hitting “like” or retweeting a cause is often referred to as “slacktivism,” whereby people feel like they’re helping a charitable initiative, but in reality do little to further its mission.

But Walker remains a self-described “hopeless hope-aholic” in combating the injustices in society. Much of his hopefulness vests in New York City, where he is constantly inspired by the breadth and depth of creative philanthropy, particularly by heavy hitters like Michael Bloomberg, Peter and Jennifer Buffett, and Agnes Gund.

is hope also stems from his own background and experiences. Born in a charity hospital in Louisiana, raised by a single mother in East Texas and educated in the public school system, Walker went on to graduate from the University of Texas at Austin for both undergrad and law school before embarking on his corporate career. “My story from that little shotgun house in Ames, Texas, to this magnificent Ford Foundation building could only have happened in America,” says Walker. “For me, what I think about every day is, how do I contribute to making America a country where stories like mine continue to be generated?” He credits his support system, and particularly his mother, for keeping him focused, grounded and ambitious throughout his childhood. “In every step of life, you have to build a cheering section,” says Walker of the key to his success.

Walker began his career at the law firm of Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton before transitioning to finance at UBS. Almost a decade later, Walker took time off from corporate America to become the COO of the Abyssinian Development Corporation, Harlem’s largest community development organization. From there, he transitioned to roles in philanthropic organizations, first as vice president at the Rockefeller Foundation and then at the Ford Foundation. He is also a trustee of Carnegie Hall, the New York City Ballet, the High Line, the Arcus Foundation and PepsiCo. “He’s the real American dream,” says Lauder. “He took advantage of every opportunity that came his way. And he appreciates everything. He’s very grateful, and he sees the positive side in things.”

How and when did you get your start in this business?

I founded Henry R Broughton Automotive in September 2013. It came from a combination of a life-long passion for cars and having taken advice from a very successful friend of mine who advised me that if you are able to do what you love, success would follow.

To what do you attribute your success in this business? Car salesmen (or women) have a reputation for being dishonest. How are you different from the stereotypical car dealer? Why should someone trust you?

It is certainly true that there are a lot of unscrupulous car dealers out there due to the sums of money involved and the unregulated nature of the market. It is my view that all you have is your reputation, which takes years to build and potentially moments to destroy. As I intend Henry R Broughton to be in this business for the long haul, I intend to protect my reputation with my values of absolute honesty, integrity and discretion.

What advice would you give someone looking to buy a classic car?

Do as much research as you can to make sure it is the car you really want and then seek advice from an industry insider such as myself. I would then search the market and contacts within the industry to find the right car, be it on or off market. Once we have settled on the right car it is imperative to go and see the car and definitely drive it before parting with any money.

If money were no object, what one car that’s currently for sale would you buy? And why?

In the tens of millions it would undoubtedly be a 1962 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta SWB. It is one of the most notable GT cars of all time with a fantastic racing pedigree it is also one of the most beautiful. On the more realistic scale of the hundreds of thousands, without a doubt, I would buy a 1988 Aston Martin V8 Vantage Volante ‘Prince of Wales’. This was the first car I ever drove, aged ten, sitting on my godfather’s lap, and which kick-started my passion for cars.

Tell us something about you most people don’t know?

Although based in London, my family arrived in America in 1620 and stayed in Fairhaven, MA for nearly 300 years. I have huge ties to the U.S., which I’m very proud of.

Give an example of a way you’ve gone over and beyond the call of a duty for a client.

I hope that I go over and beyond the call of duty for all my clients, but I think travelling to Australia to inspect a car must rank fairly high.

Plastic Surgeon Demystifying the Trade

Part 4: Facial rejuvenation, chapter two—surgical face and eyelid procedures As told to AVENUE by David P. Rapaport, M.D. FACS

U

ltimately, for those more than fifty years old looking to rejuvenate the look of the lower face and neck, the silver bullet procedure is the face-lift.

New York University taught us the so-called superficial muscular aponeurotic system (SMAS) approach to face-lifts.

Essentially, the surgeon addresses a patient’s facial skin and fat and moves both in different directions to achieve a rejuvenated, less wrinkled appearance. The actual procedure and its path are based entirely on the individual composition of the patient and involve a deep understanding of facial anatomy and, for example, might include adding volume with filler or fat.

In contrast, there’s a more aggressive approach often found in the south of the United States, where the so-called “deep plane face-lift” is more popular. This is where the skin and deeper layers are pulled back and reset as one unit. However, there’s more risk of facial nerve injury to the patient, and swelling lasts much longer.

Fillers like Restylane can delay the need for a face-lift (especially around the eyes and midface), but when jowls start appearing below the jawline and neck, the only really effective way to address the issue is through a face-lift or neck-lift.

In talking with my colleagues, we do find that some patients become a little offended when you suggest a face-lift, which is why the industry will often talk about a “cheek-lift” or “neck-lift” or even “mini face-lift” to soften the blow of a perceived stigma. Of course, prices don’t change for a “mini”!

While a woman or man can be rejuvenated in a significant way through this surgery, there are a couple of legitimate concerns.

This is a surgery conducted under anesthesia, and there is a fear of a catastrophic outcome through an airway problem or blood clot. For this reason, I conduct all my surgeries using an IV drip and allow patients to breathe on their own to minimize risks.

Then, of course, you have the fear of how you will look post surgery: as if you’ve emerged from a wind tunnel—the unnatural or “cat woman” look, if you will.

Obviously, these outcomes are not by design, so the need for a great surgeon cannot be undervalued in this situation. The NYU approach to face-lifting, as above, is about a natural result and rapid recovery. The surgery itself typically takes 3–4 hours. You’ll spend one night with bandages and a nurse, although bandages are removed after 24 hours. You’ll have free movement but a swollen or “bruised” look, so you’ll probably want to keep low profile for 7–10 days. You’ll be putting makeup on after a week. If a face-lift is performed well, there is a 7–10 year cycle until you’ll want to consider doing it again.

One key for face-lifts is not to mess with the hairline. You want wounds closing with zero tension. Basically, you just don’t want to see the join.There are no scans yet to assist the surgeon in this procedure, so looking, touching, feeling and appreciating the skin, tissue and fat of the patient are critical. Make sure you see your prospective surgeon’s past work and see if his or her approach, style and results are in tandem with your desired results. You can expect an invoice for $15,000–$30,000 depending on the extent of the work, whether eyes are treated, etc.

You may want to consider having your eyelids treated at the same time. Your upper eyelids, which do most of the blinking, make the skin loose and excessive over some period. The term “blepharoplasty” refers to removing the skin and, to some extent, fat in the upper eyelids. Lower eyelid work is much more complicated and restricted and, as a result, must be approached very carefully.

Eyelid surgery is without doubt one of the more complex and challenging procedures, where a surgeon is balancing skin and eye. The price ranges between $7,500–$15,000 depending on whether upper and/or lower eyelid is involved, and a “twilight” form of anesthesia is employed for the patient.

Celebrating 40 Years in Cancer Research How the Waxman Foundation Partners with Fashion for a Cure

I

t all began with a meeting at a fashion executive’s office. It was 1976. A doctor was invited to meet Irving Alpert, owner of Regal Accessories. The purpose was to thank the doctor who cared for a relative’s teenage nephew who had responded well to the doctor’s treatment for Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The doctor was Samuel Waxman, and Irving Alpert wanted to thank him personally.

What started out as a meeting of appreciation resulted in the renowned Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF). After Irving Alpert and his entire Regal Accessories team listened to Dr. Waxman discuss the difficulty in financing cancer research, Irving Alpert instructed his financial advisor to write out a check for $10,000 to launch the foundation. The foundation was to be named after Dr. Waxman.

40 years—and more than $90 million later—the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation has set a high benchmark for cancer research. It has funded grants to more than 200 researchers around the world. Through its Institute Without Walls, world-class researchers have for 40 years sped the pace of cancer research. The successful discovery of differentiation therapy in the 1990s for acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) was a direct result of collaboration with scientists from Shanghai. This discovery improved the survival rate of APL from 25 percent to 95 percent and remains the standard of care for this disease.

As Dr. Waxman explained when meeting Irving Alpert, research cannot move forward without funding. From that eventful meeting, the Waxman Foundation has been fortunate to continue to partner with and maintain close relationships with several industries within which the fashion industry has stood out. And the fashion industry has responded generously through the years.

The fashion fundraising component has been most supportive in the past several years. Tadashi Shoji, Cushnie et Ochs and John Varvatos have lent their names to the exciting end-of-the-year Waxman Gala events at New York City’s Cipriani Wall Street.

And Nicole Miller, St. John and Oscar de la Renta have showcased their collections 90 | AVENUE MAGAZINE • OCTOBER 2016

at the May Collaborating for a Cure luncheons, where a percentage of proceeds from purchased items are donated to SWCRF. Ruth Finley, the founder of Fashion Calendar, designer Betsey Johnson and fashion house St. John have been honored at the most anticipated Hamptons food and fashion event, the Hamptons Happening. Chris Wragge, news anchor for CBS#2 News This Morning has been the MC for the past five years, adding his magnetic personality to the event.

Another fashion fundraising initiative called Pay It Forward Tadashi takes place in October during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Shoji Pay It Forward lace Tadashi Shoji helped launch the event three years ago by deT-shirt from 2015 signing a scarf in 2014 and a lace T-shirt in 2015. The specially designed items were sold online and in Tadashi Shoji stores. This event was followed by St. John creating a live fashion event at their Fifth Avenue store. This year, Lafayette 148 will join Pay It Forward with a cocktail and fashion show presentation at their SoHo location, with a percentage of sales proceeds donated to the foundation.

The Hamptons Happening celebrated three powerful businesswomen on July 9 this year. They were Sandra Lee, Emmy-winning television personality, New York Times best-selling author and philanthropist; Jayma Cardoso, founder of the Surf Lodge in Montauk; and Deirdre Quinn, the CEO and cofounder of fashion label Lafayette 148. In addition, Fernanda Capobianco and François Payard were the honorary lead chefs. All donated their time, energy and support to the event.

Sandra Lee delivered a powerful message of personal support for the Waxman Foundation at the opening of the event’s awards ceremony. The message underscored the importance of research and preventative measures. She also pointed out how the sharing of information among scientists will bring a cure closer to fruition.

Whether affected by cancer themselves, or enduring the disease with family members or business associates, cancer has united all who express a desire to eradicate the disease. Through the foundation’s 40 years of collaborative research, much has been discovered; and yet more still has to be done. Whether making discoveries that help science better understand how cancer functions or identifying minimally toxic and novel patient therapies, the foundation’s funded investigators have made significant breakthroughs.

From the fateful meeting four decades ago at the office of Irving Alpert to the SWCRF’s current fashion alliances, the industry that launched the Waxman Foundation continues to rally behind the important work of Dr. Waxman and his brain trust of researchers.

The hope is for a cure designed to end the disease. ✦

he 2016 summer season has unofficially come to a close with a flurry of activities in the real estate market.

With tropical storm Hermine building and threatening the coast with dangerous winds and tides, the Grand Prix event at the Hampton Classic Horse Show, which takes place the last Sunday of every “season,” was rescheduled for an hour earlier than usual.

This event, for me, indicates the finale of every summer.

Last month, reporting on the bleak first half year market report, I predicted a shift from a seller’s market to a buyer’s market, which we are benefiting from now. Real estate in the Hamptons trotted into a canter as sellers dropped prices and interest rates remained low, resulting in transactions of a considerable number of properties going to contract in all price ranges.

Contemporary design often incorporates a healthier, cleaner, more open way of living. There are so many new technologies and materials being developed today that we as designers need to continually educate ourselves and our clients.

What are some of the new materials and technologies? There are almost too many to name. There’s even that new color—YInMn blue— discovered by scientists in Oregon. Sometimes it is not the material itself, but how the material is used or developed. We build furniture of concrete and stainless steel, and chairs and tables—and even stairs—of glass. We use artificial materials like Corian and mix it with avant-garde, parametric designs, which are based on algorithmic thinking. We transform one piece of furniture into another and the living room into the office by retracting the working desk from the ceiling or hiding the sectional sofa under a platform.

How in your view do European and American contemporary design differ? European contemporary design seems to be more about the living structure itself. European design includes panels and wall installations—integrated units uniting furniture, walls and even ceilings. American contemporary design is a bit more eclectic than European, and can incorporate, for example, amazing hand-crafted pieces of furniture or accessories. ✦

BONJOUR PARIS John Demsey shows us the City of Lights

POP CULTURE ENTHUSIAST John Demsey is always on the pulse of what’s new and what’s next. As the executive group president at the Estée Lauder Companies Inc., he oversees a number of brands, including M.A.C Cosmetics, Tom Ford Beauty, Bobbi Brown, La Mer and GLAMGLOW, to name a few. He also serves as chairman of the M.A.C AIDS Fund and has a schedule constantly filled with events such as dinner parties and galas in New York. Three to four times a year, Demsey takes his social calendar across the globe to Paris, a place he refers to as “a muse in every sensorial way, from the street to the catwalk, to museums to the galleries—it is a moveable feast.” Here, the beauty guru shares his memories and must-sees from his visit to the capital of France during this year’s Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week.

I spent an afternoon as a jury member of the ANDAM Fashion Award, founded by the National Association for the Development of the Fashion Arts developed under the initiative of the French Ministry of Culture. It’s a very exciting opportunity to view emerging talent, in which M.A.C Cosmetics has an integral part of their support and development.

Oh, it is love

I lived in Paris as a student during the late 1970s in a maid’s room underneath Andy Warhol’s outpost.

This began my decades-long love affair with the City of Lights. Now when I’m here, I stay at the Bristol.

I love classic, refined old hotels with impeccable service, delicious food (they prepare the best club sandwich and pommes frites on the continent), and I always run into people I know— along with the resident kitty cats that roam the floors, Cleopatra and Pharaoh.

There’s nothing more glorious than spending Independence Day in Paris. After attending the Proenza Schouler resort presentation, I had lunch at the Café de Flore, where they have the best croque madame in the world. The July 4 evening continued with a barbecue at Lauren Santo Domingo’s home in honor of Proenza Schouler designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez at her magnificent maison particulière— I’m totally jonesing for François Catroux décor.

I first came here with my parents, the day before we were to set sail on the Queen Elizabeth, bound for Liverpool and the UK, where I would spend the following two years. We stayed in the Plaza, and I spent a good deal of time riding the elevators. I decided I liked city life, especially insofar as it involved riding elevators.

DESCRIBE A PERFECT DAY IN NEW YORK. A not too steamy August day on the Upper East Side, wandering the nearly deserted, tree-lined streets, checking out the Frick, taking in a movie, having a drink and maybe a bite at one of the outdoor tables at Café Boulud.
