Interview with Parag Our regional sustainability chief explains how we’re making a material difference

Parag Bagade Head of Sustainability, Compliance and ADvantage Services South Asia Pacific and Sub-Saharan Africa

Sustainability is a big issue, whether we’re talking about climate change, plastics pollution, or any number of topics. What is happening in the label industry? Sustainability has been a topic of interest for several years now and we’re not just talking about the future, we’re talking about now. Becoming sustainable today. Governments and industries are demanding more sustainable practices. Governments are strengthening their regulations, while many companies are putting more stringent sourcing policies in place. The labeling industry is no exception. Packaging is changing in response to sustainability concerns, and Avery Dennison is at the forefront of that change. As pressure-sensitive labels remain a preferred decoration technology for packaging, we’re reinforcing our efforts by expanding ClearIntent™, our portfolio of sustainable solutions. We’re creating thinner facestocks, materials made from recycled waste, and solutions that enable

6

recyclability of the entire container. These and other sustainable solutions are readily available today. We also offer recycling programs that have been developed with local partners to recycle and repurpose label waste. Overall, the ClearIntent™ portfolio helps obtain the benefits of both PS label technology and sustainability. How have Avery Dennison’s sustainability solutions been successfully applied? Numerous well-known brands use our ClearIntent™ solutions. CleanFlake™ Adhesive Technology, as one example from our ClearIntent™ portfolio, has been applied to many different FMCG brands since its launch in 2012. As our patented solution recognized by numerous awards, CleanFlake™ increases the recyclability of PET bottles by enabling the label to cleanly separate from the container during the recycling process. Another example is the growing number of customers using our Avery Dennison Recycling Services program, where we

partner with local recyclers to keep liner and matrix waste out of landfills. The program is easy to implement and is quickly spreading to many countries globally. How do customers react to the ClearIntent™ Portfolio? Products in the ClearIntent™ portfolio provide easy-to-understand information that customers need to strategically adopt sustainable solutions. So customers have largely been quite receptive, which is great, because we need their engagement to make a difference on a meaningful scale. It’s a different environment than even five years ago. Today, everyone is serious about sustainability and they’re ready and willing to commit to environmentally friendly options. Consumers as well as our customers are demanding better solutions that could help them reach their own sustainability goals. Together, we need to form strong partnerships

Q1, 2020

“Consumers as well as our customers are demanding better solutions that could help them reach their own sustainability goals. Together, we need to form strong partnerships to make real change as we invest in innovative solutions that will speak to the industry”

to make real change as we invest in innovative solutions that will speak to the industry. This not only means better products, but also valueadded services such as the recycling programs. And we’re developing all those things in collaboration with customers. Do you think the state of the economy or a company’s financial stability impacts how they approach sustainability? How? Both are critical decision levers, however motivation to make positive changes to the planet and increasing consumer demand are also growing considerations. It’s often not an either/ or proposition. Being sustainable doesn’t necessarily mean spending more money or giving up anything. Take pressure-sensitive labels, for example. There is a broad range of cost-neutral alternatives in the ClearIntent™ portfolio that still provide the stunning shelf appeal that cannot be compromised. We invest a lot of effort in supporting customers with the

information they need that can help them make the right labeling choice for every need, no matter how big or small their business may be, or how negatively the economy is impacting their business. What does the future of sustainability look like for Avery Dennison? Busy! To begin with, we’re highly committed to doing our part in promoting a circular economy through expanding our Sustainability portfolio. Our liner recycling program has successfully commercialized in India and Australia, has recently started in the Philippines and South Africa, and is being scaled up in Thailand. Our matrix recycling program has also launched in India and the Philippines. On top of that, we’re associating with global NGOs like the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and WWF to more vigorously drive a sustainable future.

to manufacture our products and operate our facilities in ways that reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. We’ll also continue collaborating with our customers, suppliers, peers and others to advance sustainability industrywide. Our own RFID-enabled intelligent label solutions have the capacity to dramatically increase efficiency and reduce waste in supply chains, while increasing brands’ capabilities for communicating with consumers about product provenance, recycling and reuse. We’re a materials science company, so everything we do to promote sustainability comes back to our materials. Innovation in their design, manufacturing, and application is how we’ll help solve big sustainability challenges while remaining the go-to partner for converters and brands. We’re excited about where the industry is going, and how we can help it get there. ■

In addition, we’ll continue to choose raw materials that minimize consumption of resources, and

On The Road to Zero Waste

Himalaya Drug Company, a global herbal health and personal care company based in India, is strongly committed to sustainability. The Company has been concerned with the accumulation of waste and is on a mission to reduce the amount of packaging materials used, in order to reduce waste generation.

Waste from Glassine Label Liners As a company producing science backed herbal health care products for consumers worldwide, all Himalaya brand of products in the market are clearly labelled to meet regulatory requirements, provide consumers with valuable information, and empower the distribution network to track the products throughout the supply chain.

8

Applying the labels, unfortunately, generates close to 140 tons of label release liner waste per annum. This volume could continue to grow as Himalaya’s manufacturing operations increase to meet the growing demand for the Company’s products worldwide. Traditionally, these discarded liner waste would be disposed of in landfills or incinerators. However, Himalaya wanted to find a sustainable and green solution to their liner waste.

pressure sensitive adhesive industry. Yet, without hesitation, Himalaya was keen to pilot this recycling program with Avery Dennison. The partners then started collecting, the label liner, generated as part of the labelling operations carried out on product tubes and containers centrally before passing these on to Mahajan Recycle Resources, the appointed recycler for this Liner Recycling Program.

Exploring an Eco-friendly Solution

The collected liner waste is then reprocessed, and this recycled pulp would be used to create new materials such as cardboard, paper, and tissue.

In early 2018, Himalaya met with Avery Dennison executives, who shared their revolutionary plans for recycling liner waste into paper products that can be used in various industries. The idea was the first-of-its-kind in India’s

The initial pilot grew to four successful pilot programs, which led Himalaya’s management to take positive steps to adopt a large-scale program.

Q1, 2020

Gagan Deep, Head of Packaging Development, Research and Development, The Himalaya Drug Company said: “ The Himalaya Drug Company has always been dedicated to driving initiatives that help in the conservation of the environment. We are pleased to associate with Avery Dennison for this pathbreaking initiative to recycle silicon coated release liner that we use in our pressure sensitive labels. Avery Dennison, along with Mahajan Recycle Resources, have helped us quick start the pilot project to constructively recycle and convert it into useful fiber to make paper products. This program brings us closer to our goal of creating a sustainable business model and reducing our carbon footprint.” Over the past decade, Himalaya has been diligently working towards improving its waste management process. The Company’s facility at Bengaluru properly segregates and systematically handles all varieties of waste generated within the campus. The initiatives are paying off with 90% of solid waste and 100% of liquid waste being recycled. Paper, plastic, and other recyclable waste are put under the charge of certified recyclers. The Himalaya Drug Company today is a certified “zero discharge” facility.

Adithan A.G, General Manager of Packaging Development, The Himalaya Drug Company said: “ We found strong support from Avery Dennison’s Liner Recycling Program in making this pilot project successful, driving us to expand this initiative. This is a significant milestone for Himalaya and a big stride towards promoting greener packaging practices. Along with Avery Dennison, we, at Himalaya, have been successful in contributing significantly to bring about a transformation in the Pressure Sensitive Label ecosystem, where the liner was either landfilled or incinerated till date. We shall always aim for sustainable goals along with Avery Dennison and continue to reduce the ecological impact from plastic waste generation.” Vikas Mahajan, Director, Recycling Business said: “ Silicon liner waste had previously only been considered as raw material for making pallets, fuel, or for landfill. As an active member of the paper industry and operating a recovered waste paper business, we view silicon waste as a resource of unused fibers. Our technical experts sought to find solutions to repulp silicon liner and to recover the fibers for paper production. Himalaya’s support has been outstanding, as it organized the collection of glassine liner waste from their operations to divert this waste from the landfill towards recycled materials.”

Parag Bagade, Head, Technical Marketing, Label and Graphic Materials, South Asia Pacific and Sub Saharan Africa, Avery Dennison said: “ As a company fully committed to our 2025 sustainability goals, we are happy to be able to help customers and brand owners attain their sustainability goals through ourliner recycling program. The enthusiastic support from the Himalaya team motivated us to continue to achieve our sustainability goals through this recycling program. My heartfelt thanks to the Himalaya team, Mahajan Resources, and the supportive management and colleagues at Avery Dennison, including T Muralidhar, our Segment Manager for pharmaceutical business, for making this program a success!” G Sridhara, Business Head for Specialty & International Business and Home and Personal Care segment, Label and Graphic Materials, South Asia, Avery Dennison said: “ We are setting a new benchmark in the South Asia pressure sensitive market as our collaboration with Himalaya and Mahajan is the only successfully tested and commercially viable recycling program for brands and customers in India. This is a testimony of our relationship as Himalaya’s trusted partner for pressure sensitive labels.” ■

Select Solutions™

CleanFlake™ Recycled PET (rPET) is a valuable and sustainable material, with no limit in eliminating contamination from the recycling stream. The Avery Dennison CleanFlake™ portfolio is designed to improve rPET yields while maintaining all-important shelf appeal. Brands, packaging designers and manufacturers are all seeking PET packaging that supports conventional recycling, especially through clean separation during the sink/float washing process. CleanFlake™ technology meets the design guidelines from the European PET Bottle Platform (EPBP) and from Petcore, which place specific emphasis on raising the output of rPET. As a plug-and-play solution, compatible with the existing value chain, CleanFlake™ technology provides a simple route to improved recycling of PET bottles, leaving no adhesive residue on the resulting PET flakes. It improves upon existing self-adhesive labels, which limit PET recycling into new food-grade containers due to adhesive contamination. The unique ‘switchable’ CleanFlake™ adhesive enables clean label separation in a caustic bath at temperatures down to 70°C, lower than the typical industrial temperature of 85°C (performance at washing temperatures below 70°C needs to be evaluated individually per type of PET package and recycling process). Avery Dennison CleanFlake™ portfolio offers a wide range of facestocks, from FSC-certified semi-gloss paper to PP films, available in white, clear, and silver.

Key features – Allows PET recycling into rPET, which preserves a valuable raw material – Available with paper and film material in white, clear (“no-label” look) and silver – Available with FSC-certified glassine liners and rPET23 liner made partially from Post Consumer Waste (PCW) PET bottle flakes content; the first attempt towards closed loop recycling! – Plug-and-play solution

Application areas – Labelling of existing or new PET containers including bottles, trays, and thermoforms

20

Sustainable Solutions

Conversion information CleanFlake™ Flex has been designed specifically to enhance shelf appeal while accommodating the dimensional changes associated with freshly blown and immediately labelled PET bottles and containers. In addition to the choice of substrate, ink systems should be tested for suitability with design guidelines, without negatively impacting conversion or finished label quality.

To ensure clean separation between the label and the PET flake, the final (print+label+adhesive) layer must have a total density of less than 1.0 gram/cm3.

Key features – Facilitates easy label removal in a conventional bottle washer – No adhesive residues on bottle or in washer – No contamination of the washing water adhesive and inks remain on the label – A clear-on-clear label material that is not affected by humid environments – Labels remain firmly in place at point of sale, and with the consumer – Supports complex shapes and neck labels – Compatible with a wide variety of printing techniques including letterpress, flexo and gravure

22

Sustainable Solutions

How it works The Wash-off facestock contains two film layers that expand at different rates in a hot washer. This makes the label curl for easy removal. Both the adhesive and the inks remain on the label, reducing contamination of the water in the bottle washer. The material can be supplied either ready for the converter to overlaminate or as a complete construction with an over-lamination layer already in place.

Removable adhesives

Factors in choosing a removable adhesive

R450

Removable adhesives are designed for various application segments and the below factors have to be considered before choosing the right solution.

General purpose removable adhesive for paper facestock featuring moderate initial tack and minimal adhesion build over time. Its consistent level of adhesion and long term removability make it suitable for applications on substrates such as glass and plastics. Proven successful for shelf and tote marking used in logistical tracking.

R480 General purpose removable adhesive for filmic facestock featuring moderate initial tack and minimal adhesion build over time. Its consistent level of adhesion and long term removability make it suitable for applications on substrates such as glass and plastics. Proven successful for shelf and tote marking used in logistical tracking.

R423 Removable, low peel adhesive featuring long-term removability, and excellent die cutting and stripping characteristics. Particularly suited for wallpaper promotional labels, high gloss book covers and shelf marking. R423 is an excellent solution for Monroney labels.

R100 A premium, rubber based adhesive designed for applications requiring special purpose removability. Excellent low temperature and deep freeze performance.

26

Facestock Internal strength or weakness of a facestock is a significant factor for ultimate removability. Higher strength ensures a greater degree of removability. Exposure Conditions Are there any unusual environmental conditions during or after application? What is the minimum application temperature of the adhesive? Period of Use One day, 1 week, 1 month,, 1 year, etc. Substrate Shape, roughness and cleanliness of the surface must be known when selecting the correct adhesive. Is it flat or curved, textured or corrugated, damp or dry? Is the substrate glass, paper, textile or polymeric? Label Size The greater the area of adhesive contact, the greater the force required to remove the label. With large labels, a reduced adhesive weight or an ultraremovable adhesive should be considered.

Cover-up Opaque High-opacity barrier coating on paper or film hides errors, and covers outdated information on packaging, labels and containers. No matter what the relabelling need, Avery Dennison’s Cover-up portfolio can make it right without the high cost of repackaging, with reduced harm to the environment. Almost every packaged product will need to have its labeling changed or adapted at some point in its life. It is crucial to ensure that any over-labelling is truly opaque. This makes the new labels fully legible and, especially for correction labels, ensures that overprinted data is hidden. Avery Dennison opaque label stocks offer label converters and their customers an unrivalled range of options in both paper and film, with permanent and removable adhesives. The range is a genuine one-stop shop for all correction applications, and the sheer quantity of choices available allows for highly creative solutions. Most paper or film products can be customised on demand to use a specific opaque colour - for example, an attractive coloured background on a clear bottle.

Key features – Opaque prime films – Opaque prime papers – Opaque VI front materials – A selection of standard colours and multiple opaque layers – Customising colours

Application areas – Correction labels – Translation labels – Promotional labels – Shipping and tracking labels

Promotional / Retail

Frozen Foods Ready and Frozen meals are becoming more prevalent on supermarket refrigerated shelves and ready meal delivery services. Traditionally these meals are packaged in a microwavable CPET or PP tray and wrapped in a cardboard sleeve, allowing for large graphics on the front and product information on the back. However, sleeves are often not fixed to the tray and can be slipped off on shelf, posing a risk of product tampering. Sleeves are also generally manually applied, making them a costly decoration technology. Pressure Sensitive synthetic labels provide the coverage of a traditional sleeve to deliver large graphics, with the added benefit of sticking directly to the food tray, protecting the product from sleeves being removed on shelf. Card labels can also be automatically applied which improves the overall packaging cost and productivity.

Key features – Excellent print quality to provide attractive on-shelf appearance – Available on hotmelt, emulsion and removable

Application areas – Frozen Ready meals in supermarkets or home delivery services – Refrigerated meat/fish/poultry trays

Low Migration Avery Dennison now offers low-migration adhesives that are pretested to meet regulatory requirements in the North American and European markets. By choosing pretested, low-migration adhesives in combination with low-migration base materials, inks and varnishes for plastic containers, pharmaceutical companies can minimize the time and money they spend on migration certification, and in some cases can bypass it altogether. The need for low migration As per the European Union’s 2005 guidelines around plastic packaging materials, & U.S. FDA guidelines for pharmaceutical industry: Container Closure Systems for Packaging Human Drugs and Biologics.” the “packaging components should be constructed of materials that will not leach harmful or undesirable amounts of substances to which a patient will be exposed when being treated with a drug product.” The chief way that regulatory agencies in the U.S. and Europe are encouraging pharmaceutical companies to address migration issues is by requiring that they use low-migration label materials. The term low migration is used because some amount of migration will always occur in plastic packaging. However, if the migration or interaction happens within the accepted window determined by regulatory authorities, the packaging components are deemed safe for use. There are two certifications that pharmaceutical companies can obtain to certify low-migration label materials.

ASEAN

Certifications can be secured through the independent, globally accepted testing agency, under ISEGA (As per EU guidelines ) & 21 CFR 175.105,(US Regulation) guidelines Typically, ISEGA certification can take up to two years to complete before the label is cleared for companies to use in production, making it a long and costly process for businesses that want to get their products to market quickly and efficiently. At the same time, this certification is necessary for pharmaceutical companies if they want to sell products with plastic containers to the European or the U.S. markets.

Small-diameter Pharmaceutical containers, are small – with typical volumes of 10-150 ml and diameters of 15-50 mm. Only a label adhesive with excellent mandrel performance can ensure successful conversion and dispensing. There is growing demand for self-injection devices across the medical segment, thanks to many different benefits including better dosage security and sterility. The challenge to label converters is how to address such small diameters and low energy (e.g. PE/PP) substrates. Avery Dennison offers a sophisticated portfolio of labelling solutions designed for small-diameter pharmaceutical labelling applications. It provides outstanding tight mandrel performance, a low risk of adhesive migration, edge lift, and 12-month advance change notification*. Options include low-migration pharmaceutical adhesives S692NP and S717P. The first delivers exceptionally low migration (important as plastic use grows), while S717P minimises edge lift on low surfaceenergy substrates, down to 10 mm in diameter.

Key features – Outstanding mandrel performance on small diameter containers – Availability and change notification 12 months in advance* – Compliance with FDA and European food regulations

Application areas – Prescription medicines or drugs – OTC (over-the-counter) products – Auto-injector pens for diabetics, autoimmune deficiencies and more – Pre-filled syringes and vials – Small diameter containers: 15-50 mm diameter – Glass, PE and PP substrates (including treated, slip-coated or varnished) – Low migration labels for thin-walled LDPE containers – Any application requiring excellent mandrel performance * Only applies to the following adhesives: S2000NP, S2045NP, S717P, S692NP

Drum Durable, proven materials featuring BS 5609 Section 2 and 3 certification The Avery Dennison Select Solutions™ Drum portfolio offers an impressive track record of proven performance on a broad range of containers and surfaces. Whether for painted steel or molded polyethylene drums, our film and heavyweight paper facestocks have been chosen for their ability to withstand harsh environments and outdoor exposures. In fact, all our drum portfolio facestocks have passed BS 5609 Section 2 and 3 Marine Immersion label testing, including a threemonth exposure to saltwater, as part of International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG certification). Our Drum Portfolio facestocks are combined with our best-in-class adhesives to offer needed versatility. Because these labels are typically hand-applied, drum adhesives must be repositionable to amend misapplied or misaligned label applications. The adhesive must also wet-out quickly to become permanent, remaining highly durable over a drum’s long-term exposure to the elements.

Key features – Consistent adherence to a range of drum surfaces – Strong enough to withstand ongoing outdoor exposure – Weather- and temperature-resistant – Impervious to contact with aggressive chemicals and saltwater – Highly adaptable to varying container sizes and diameters – A range of cost and performance options – Materials suitable for thermal transfer and laser printing – Repositionable adhesives

Easing the BS 5609 certiďŹ cation process Two certifications are important to converters who are helping clients adhere to GHS standards: BS 5609 Section 2 and 3. Section 2 certification deals with the actual label materials. Our Drum portfolio features BS 5609 Section 2-certified facestock, liners and adhesives. Meanwhile, various combinations of printers, ribbons and inks must be certified under BS 5609 Section 3. To make this process easier for converters and end users, Avery Dennison now offers both BS 5609 Section 2 and 3 certification. Our certification library contains a multitude of certified materials, printers, ribbons and ink combinations. The portfolio matrix allows converters and end users to check various printing methods and descriptions at a glance. Our laboratory, which is certified for BS 5609: 1986 by Underwriters Laboratory (ULÂŽ), helps you alleviate major bottlenecks for BS 5609 testing such as long waits and high prices. Typical testing can range from $2,000 - $4,000, and can take months to complete. But the Avery Dennison testing lab can quickly certify for Section 2 and Section 3 at no cost to you. If you are already certified under Section 2, Section 3 certification can typically be achieved in under a month. But if you need both certifications, we can facilitate them concurrently, thus helping you achieve certification within two to three months.

UL 969 (‘Marking and Labelling Systems’) is the most commonly used UL standard for labels, but it applies only to labels on smooth and flat surfaces. Avery Dennison offers materials that comply in addition with the following standards: UL 817 – cord sets and power supply cords UL 2238 – cable assemblies and fittings for industrial control and signal distribution

Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) are US federal regulations. Standard FMVSS 302 relates to the burning behaviour of materials used inside road vehicles such as passenger cars, trucks, buses and agriculture machinery. Most automotive OEMs specify flammability testing based on FMVSS 302. Products meeting these specifications are available, please contact your local Avery Dennison sales representative for details.

ASEAN

The standard UL 94 is used to indicate the flammability of plastic materials used in devices and appliances. Avery Dennison offers materials complying with UL 94 VTM-0, the most stringent classification, when tested as a flag label.

Heavy Industrial Applying tracking information onto raw materials such as metals, timber, stones and other building materials can be done in many ways - including the use of hanging tags and adhesive labels. Some materials can be hot at the point when they need to be labelled, while others can be rough, dusty or oily. Conventional solutions include handwriting, riveting or welding plates onto parts. The Avery Dennison Heavy Industrial Labelling range allows label converters to offer a highly effective alternative labelling solution. It ensures traceability throughout the manufacturing process. Materials for conversion into both hanging tags and adhesive labels are available, covering different temperature ranges. Labels and hanging tags applied at ambient temperatures can use cost effective solutions based on polyolefines. For peak temperatures up to +220°C, Avery Dennison offers heat stabilised polyester films. Topcoated aluminium films, featuring high abrasion and solvent resistance for thermal transfer print, can be used at temperatures up to +550°C.

Key features – Productive labelling technology for raw material processors – Performs in extreme conditions – Barcodes can be applied very soon in the value chain – Eliminates manual marking of parts, automating track-and-trace – Tracks and traces inventory from initial manufacture to final delivery – Helps reduce material reworking costs – Complete portfolio covering a wide range of applications

Application areas – Metal processing – Building material industry – Timber industry – Manufacturing

Select Solutions™

Air Egress Reduce risks of bubbles for durable goods labeling Label appearance can be impacted by wrinkles and bubbles, distorting the finish and spoiling the end result. This can be a particular issue for injection-molded plastics, such as PC and ABS, commonly used in the durable goods segment. Injection molded materials can also contain volatile elements that can diffuse at elevated temperatures above 40°C and cause an ‘outgassing’ phenomenon. This phenomenon, as well as entrapped air during label application, can contribute to undesired bubble formation under the label material. The conventional way to deal with bubbles under labels is to perforate the label surface to release trapped air, but this leaves undesirable holes in labels. Another method involves repeatedly reapplying the label, however this makes it more likely an applied label will be misaligned.

The Air Egress solution Avery Dennison Air Egress technology uses a microembossed texture to create a nearly flawless, even finish. The textured adhesive creates a complex grid and allows trapped air to escape while the label is being applied. The result are labels that go on smoothly and stay that way, without the unsightly wrinkles and bubbles that can cause application scrap and wasteful reworking. Larger labels on injection-molded plastics are especially prone to bubbles or wrinkles. Air Egress adhesive technology enables optimum label aesthetics, whether labels are applied manually or automatically. Excellent print performance on different facestocks, together with Air Egress technology, mean that eye-catching designs can created over a larger surface area for an outstanding brand image.

Select Solutions™

Durable Goods Labelling Solving the low surface-energy labelling challenge Automotive and other manufacturers are increasingly using low surface energy (LSE) plastics, thanks to their performance, low weight and attractive cost. Such LSE materials offer smooth, modern finishes, and lightweight benefits automotive components such as treated metal bumpers, body trim and interior panels are often now being made with lighter LSE plastics. The durable and easy-to-clean finishes offered by these materials are also ideal for medical equipment, household appliances and a range of industrial applications. Unfortunately, conventional adhesives designed to provide long-term stability do not bond easily to LSE materials. A simple way to understand this is to consider a waxed car, where water forms beads instead of spreading out across the surface. LSE plastics have a similar effect on a conventional label adhesive, making adhesive adhesion to the labelled substrate difficult. The lower the surface energy, the weaker the bond.

Strong and durable - RHA technology Today’s manufacturers need labels that not only adhere well but also withstand the harsh chemicals and high temperatures common in automotive and industrial applications. Rubber adhesives are tacky enough, but lack the necessary chemical and temperature resistance. Acrylic adhesives provide chemical and temperature resistance, but are not tacky enough. Avery Dennison offers an innovative adhesive technology to address this challenge, enabling the creation of labels that retain crucial information on products or personal safety, and which stay in place and remain legible over a product’s lifetime.

Compared to widely used alternatives, S8049, S8039 and S8029 - based on Avery Dennison RHA technology - are easier to convert, with higher final adhesion values and better chemical resistance.

80

Durables

Conversion recommendations The innovative formulation of Avery Dennison RHA adhesive ensures less adhesive ooze than alternative products, but the high adhesive coat weight requires special care during die cutting in order to minimise bleed. Recommended precautions include using sharpened dies (contact your tool supplier with sample material); setting up the correct die cutting depth; using rounded corners; maintaining minimum winding tension within shorter rolls; avoiding unnecessary heat exposure during conversion and storage; and ensuring immediate stripping after die cutting. RHA technology combines rubber and acrylic performance to achieve the best of both worlds.

Key features – Copes with rough, slightly oily or very low surface energy substrates (including PE, PP and lacquers) – Provides high peel adhesion on the most difficult substrates – High chemical, temperature, UV and ageing resistance – Up to 20% higher conversion speed than common alternative, with less cleaning on press – Available with a wide range of facestocks

Application areas

ASEAN

– Suits a majority of durables applications requiring a high tack adhesive and a long life time.
