Interview with Parag Our regional sustainability chief explains how we’re making a material difference
Parag Bagade Head of Sustainability, Compliance and ADvantage Services South Asia Pacific and Sub-Saharan Africa
Sustainability is a big issue, whether we’re talking about climate change, plastics pollution, or any number of topics. What is happening in the label industry? Sustainability has been a topic of interest for several years now and we’re not just talking about the future, we’re talking about now. Becoming sustainable today. Governments and industries are demanding more sustainable practices. Governments are strengthening their regulations, while many companies are putting more stringent sourcing policies in place. The labeling industry is no exception. Packaging is changing in response to sustainability concerns, and Avery Dennison is at the forefront of that change. As pressure-sensitive labels remain a preferred decoration technology for packaging, we’re reinforcing our efforts by expanding ClearIntent™, our portfolio of sustainable solutions. We’re creating thinner facestocks, materials made from recycled waste, and solutions that enable
6
recyclability of the entire container. These and other sustainable solutions are readily available today. We also offer recycling programs that have been developed with local partners to recycle and repurpose label waste. Overall, the ClearIntent™ portfolio helps obtain the benefits of both PS label technology and sustainability. How have Avery Dennison’s sustainability solutions been successfully applied? Numerous well-known brands use our ClearIntent™ solutions. CleanFlake™ Adhesive Technology, as one example from our ClearIntent™ portfolio, has been applied to many different FMCG brands since its launch in 2012. As our patented solution recognized by numerous awards, CleanFlake™ increases the recyclability of PET bottles by enabling the label to cleanly separate from the container during the recycling process. Another example is the growing number of customers using our Avery Dennison Recycling Services program, where we
partner with local recyclers to keep liner and matrix waste out of landfills. The program is easy to implement and is quickly spreading to many countries globally. How do customers react to the ClearIntent™ Portfolio? Products in the ClearIntent™ portfolio provide easy-to-understand information that customers need to strategically adopt sustainable solutions. So customers have largely been quite receptive, which is great, because we need their engagement to make a difference on a meaningful scale. It’s a different environment than even five years ago. Today, everyone is serious about sustainability and they’re ready and willing to commit to environmentally friendly options. Consumers as well as our customers are demanding better solutions that could help them reach their own sustainability goals. Together, we need to form strong partnerships
Q1, 2020
“Consumers as well as our customers are demanding better solutions that could help them reach their own sustainability goals. Together, we need to form strong partnerships to make real change as we invest in innovative solutions that will speak to the industry”
to make real change as we invest in innovative solutions that will speak to the industry. This not only means better products, but also valueadded services such as the recycling programs. And we’re developing all those things in collaboration with customers. Do you think the state of the economy or a company’s financial stability impacts how they approach sustainability? How? Both are critical decision levers, however motivation to make positive changes to the planet and increasing consumer demand are also growing considerations. It’s often not an either/ or proposition. Being sustainable doesn’t necessarily mean spending more money or giving up anything. Take pressure-sensitive labels, for example. There is a broad range of cost-neutral alternatives in the ClearIntent™ portfolio that still provide the stunning shelf appeal that cannot be compromised. We invest a lot of effort in supporting customers with the
information they need that can help them make the right labeling choice for every need, no matter how big or small their business may be, or how negatively the economy is impacting their business. What does the future of sustainability look like for Avery Dennison? Busy! To begin with, we’re highly committed to doing our part in promoting a circular economy through expanding our Sustainability portfolio. Our liner recycling program has successfully commercialized in India and Australia, has recently started in the Philippines and South Africa, and is being scaled up in Thailand. Our matrix recycling program has also launched in India and the Philippines. On top of that, we’re associating with global NGOs like the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and WWF to more vigorously drive a sustainable future.
to manufacture our products and operate our facilities in ways that reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. We’ll also continue collaborating with our customers, suppliers, peers and others to advance sustainability industrywide. Our own RFID-enabled intelligent label solutions have the capacity to dramatically increase efficiency and reduce waste in supply chains, while increasing brands’ capabilities for communicating with consumers about product provenance, recycling and reuse. We’re a materials science company, so everything we do to promote sustainability comes back to our materials. Innovation in their design, manufacturing, and application is how we’ll help solve big sustainability challenges while remaining the go-to partner for converters and brands. We’re excited about where the industry is going, and how we can help it get there. ■
In addition, we’ll continue to choose raw materials that minimize consumption of resources, and

Of the earth by the earth for the earth New Crush range of sustainable label facestocks Barley and citrus aren’t just mixers anymore. Paper maker Favini uses the organic ingredients to create their sustainable line of Crush papers, which are now available as a label. To learn about the inspiration behind the Crush range, Avery Dennison Global Marketing Director for Wine and Spirits Ralph Olthoff talked with Favini’s Marketing and Export Sales Director Andrea Favini.
Ralph: What inspired you to create label facestocks made from natural ingredients? Can you tell us about the innovation process? Andrea: The first paper created from the upcycling principle was Shiro Alga Carta, patented by Favini in the ’90s. It uses algae from the Venice Lagoon, the proliferation of which had put the lagoon’s fragile ecosystem at risk. Shiro Alga Carta was a great success with international significance, which inspired Favini’s research and development team to look for a new way to use an alternative ingredient, such as by-products from different industrial sectors, that could partially substitute virgin tree pulp. R: Can you tell us a bit more about the production process? A: Natural by-products of citrus fruits,
grapes, cherries, lavender, corn, olives, coffee, kiwi fruits, hazelnuts and almonds are selected, mechanically cleaned, purified, micronized, and then combined with tree fibres and other ingredients to produce Crush paper. The process remains the same as for other kinds of paper, but we use less energy and no additional chemicals. R: For designers and brands interested in sustainability, how does the Crush range compare to other wine label materials? A: Crush represents a sustainable wine label alternative. Crush is produced with 15 percent agriindustrial by-products and 40 percent post-consumer recycled paper, which results in 20 percent lower CO2 emissions than standard label papers. →

About Favini Favini is a leading global producer of graphics specialties, natural fibres-based (cellulose, algae, fruits, nuts, leather, etc.), for the packaging of luxury and fashion industries. Favini is also a worldwide leader in the design and production of textures and finishing solutions for eco-leather for fashion, luxury, design, IT, and technical sportswear sectors. It also operates in the converting products industry sector that includes activities related to the creation and production of stationery for school, leisure and office, for high-end market.
R: How do these sustainable label facestocks compare in terms of durability and application to papers made with 100 percent virgin pulp?
We also created Remake, a paper made from the upcycling process of leather residues that replaces 25 percent wood tree pulp.
A: It’s comparable. On one hand, designers should pay attention to the colour of Crush papers and adapt their design to the material because Crush, by nature, is not white. On the other hand, their variant nature makes them recognizable and adds a distinctive feature.
R: How do you think sustainability will impact the paper industry in the future?
Crush is also compatible with the same printing techniques as standard label papers. In terms of sustainability, however, we suggest minimizing the use of finishing techniques, which can add to a label’s environmental impact. R: Sustainability is very important for Favini; what other initiatives or products do you have that contribute to sustainability? A: Favini, in its DNA, has the principles of circular economy and sustainability. It is these two important aspects which, from an environmental perspective, have led us over the years to seek out alternative solutions using by-products as a precious raw material in the production of low impact and sustainable papers. In addition to Crush, we also developed Shiro, a sustainable range of papers produced using seaweed, renewable non-tree biomass, and recycled fibres.
A: The paper industry has already been influenced by sustainability. In fact, it is, in my opinion, one of the most ethical industries. Our cellulose comes from certified plantations and the research into other fibres – such as fibres from annual plants, recycled fibres, or by-products – with the same features of recyclability and biodegradability, are all increasing. From a company perspective, we are reducing our use of natural resources by decreasing our electricity and water use, as well as our CO2 emissions. Favini’s commitment to sustainability and the environment are available on the Favini website. At Labelexpo, Avery Dennison is introducing the Crush range, consisting of rCrush Barley and rCrush Citrus, our 2 newest materials. Complementing the range is rCrush Grape, the new name for Grape Touch. Visit my-muse.com or Instagram @m_uselive for more label inspiration.

On The Road to Zero Waste
Himalaya Drug Company, a global herbal health and personal care company based in India, is strongly committed to sustainability. The Company has been concerned with the accumulation of waste and is on a mission to reduce the amount of packaging materials used, in order to reduce waste generation.
Waste from Glassine Label Liners As a company producing science backed herbal health care products for consumers worldwide, all Himalaya brand of products in the market are clearly labelled to meet regulatory requirements, provide consumers with valuable information, and empower the distribution network to track the products throughout the supply chain.
12
Applying the labels, unfortunately, generates close to 140 tons of label release liner waste per annum. This volume could continue to grow as Himalaya’s manufacturing operations increase to meet the growing demand for the Company’s products worldwide. Traditionally, these discarded liner waste would be disposed of in landfills or incinerators. However, Himalaya wanted to find a sustainable and green solution to their liner waste.
pressure sensitive adhesive industry. Yet, without hesitation, Himalaya was keen to pilot this recycling program with Avery Dennison. The partners then started collecting, the label liner, generated as part of the labelling operations carried out on product tubes and containers centrally before passing these on to Mahajan Recycle Resources, the appointed recycler for this Liner Recycling Program.
Exploring an Eco-friendly Solution
The collected liner waste is then reprocessed, and this recycled pulp would be used to create new materials such as cardboard, paper, and tissue.
In early 2018, Himalaya met with Avery Dennison executives, who shared their revolutionary plans for recycling liner waste into paper products that can be used in various industries. The idea was the first-of-its-kind in India’s
The initial pilot grew to four successful pilot programs, which led Himalaya’s management to take positive steps to adopt a large-scale program.
Q1, 2020
Gagan Deep, Head of Packaging Development, Research and Development, The Himalaya Drug Company said: “ The Himalaya Drug Company has always been dedicated to driving initiatives that help in the conservation of the environment. We are pleased to associate with Avery Dennison for this pathbreaking initiative to recycle silicon coated release liner that we use in our pressure sensitive labels. Avery Dennison, along with Mahajan Recycle Resources, have helped us quick start the pilot project to constructively recycle and convert it into useful fiber to make paper products. This program brings us closer to our goal of creating a sustainable business model and reducing our carbon footprint.” Over the past decade, Himalaya has been diligently working towards improving its waste management process. The Company’s facility at Bengaluru properly segregates and systematically handles all varieties of waste generated within the campus. The initiatives are paying off with 90% of solid waste and 100% of liquid waste being recycled. Paper, plastic, and other recyclable waste are put under the charge of certified recyclers. The Himalaya Drug Company today is a certified “zero discharge” facility.
Adithan A.G, General Manager of Packaging Development, The Himalaya Drug Company said: “ We found strong support from Avery Dennison’s Liner Recycling Program in making this pilot project successful, driving us to expand this initiative. This is a significant milestone for Himalaya and a big stride towards promoting greener packaging practices. Along with Avery Dennison, we, at Himalaya, have been successful in contributing significantly to bring about a transformation in the Pressure Sensitive Label ecosystem, where the liner was either landfilled or incinerated till date. We shall always aim for sustainable goals along with Avery Dennison and continue to reduce the ecological impact from plastic waste generation.” Vikas Mahajan, Director, Recycling Business said: “ Silicon liner waste had previously only been considered as raw material for making pallets, fuel, or for landfill. As an active member of the paper industry and operating a recovered waste paper business, we view silicon waste as a resource of unused fibers. Our technical experts sought to find solutions to repulp silicon liner and to recover the fibers for paper production. Himalaya’s support has been outstanding, as it organized the collection of glassine liner waste from their operations to divert this waste from the landfill towards recycled materials.”
Parag Bagade, Head, Technical Marketing, Label and Graphic Materials, South Asia Pacific and Sub Saharan Africa, Avery Dennison said: “ As a company fully committed to our 2025 sustainability goals, we are happy to be able to help customers and brand owners attain their sustainability goals through ourliner recycling program. The enthusiastic support from the Himalaya team motivated us to continue to achieve our sustainability goals through this recycling program. My heartfelt thanks to the Himalaya team, Mahajan Resources, and the supportive management and colleagues at Avery Dennison, including T Muralidhar, our Segment Manager for pharmaceutical business, for making this program a success!” G Sridhara, Business Head for Specialty & International Business and Home and Personal Care segment, Label and Graphic Materials, South Asia, Avery Dennison said: “ We are setting a new benchmark in the South Asia pressure sensitive market as our collaboration with Himalaya and Mahajan is the only successfully tested and commercially viable recycling program for brands and customers in India. This is a testimony of our relationship as Himalaya’s trusted partner for pressure sensitive labels.” ■

Labels For a Good Business Journey A sustainability collaboration between Avery Dennison, Woolworths and Rotolabel
Avery Dennison shares Woolworths commitment for a sustainable future. The local team collaborated with Rotolabel, the leading supplier of labelling solutions in southern Africa, to provide Woolworths with FSC-certified labels.
Why Sustainability Matters to Woolworths
Labelling Solutions from Responsibly Sourced Materials
Three-party Collaboration for a Sustainable Future
Headquartered in South Africa, Woolworths is a food, clothing and home retailer with a focus on longterm supplier relationships and a responsibility to influence change along its supply chain.
Woolworths had expressed an unmet need to its suppliers for sustainable sourcing of paper products and were very specific in their requirement for responsibly sourced materials certified by Forest Stewardship Council™ (FSC) as labels on its private label food products.
Avery Dennison shares Woolworths commitment for a sustainable future. When the company received its CoC certification for its operations in South Africa, the local team collaborated with Rotolabel, the leading supplier of labelling solutions in southern Africa, to provide Woolworths with FSC-certified labels.
Sustainability is important to the Group as the retail sector continues to be in the spotlight for its direct and supply chain impacts. The “Good Business Journey” is Woolworths sustainability strategy to find solutions and create shared value in its supply chains in order to make a difference in its communities, country and world.
FSC is considered to be the most rigorous, credible forest certification system available. The FSC™ chain-ofcustody (CoC) certification process traces the path of products from forests through the supply chain. Woolworths customers continue to show a strong and growing interest in environmentally responsible and ethically sourced products.
Avery Dennison has 170 FSC™certified products available to customers at a cost neutral price position, enabling brands like Woolworths to switch from their existing paper material to FSC-certified materials without a significant premium to their consumers.
Rotolabel is Forest Stewardship Council® certified (FSC-C119866) – wherever possible, our products are manufactured from materials that are responsibly sourced. Avery Dennison Pty Ltd in South Africa is a holder of Forest Stewardship Council™ Chain-of-Custody (CoC) certificate number SGS-COC-010380
16
Q1, 2020
Working closely, Avery Dennison supplied Rotolabel with the Fasson® portfolio of FSC-certified materials which offered great shelf appeal, economy and durability. Fasson® Semigloss is supercalendered, lightweight with enhanced opacity, smoothness and brightness, particularly suited for high volume retail applications. The company also supplied Fasson® Thermal Top Coated paper for high quality variable information printing where durability is required. Rotolabel converted these FSC-certified materials into labels customised to Woolworths requirements.
Tom McLaughlin, Responsible Sourcing, Woolworths Food said: “One of Woolworths five strategic commitments for 2020 is to responsibly source all key commodities. Paper is a key commodity. Its use is often associated with deforestation issues, biodiversity loss and human rights issues. By using these FSC-certified labels supplied through a transparent chainof-custody programme, Woolworths consumers are assured that the labels on their purchased product had been sustainably sourced.” Grant Watson, Executive, National Sales, Rotolabel said: “We are proud to help brands like Woolworths transform their products
into consumers’ must-haves by doing the right thing – incorporating environmentally responsible practices in all levels of our business and working with suppliers who source materials from reputable mills using only responsible forestry practices.” Marcel Cote, Director, Strategic Marketing, Label and Graphic Materials, South Asia Pacific and SubSaharan Africa, Avery Dennison said: “This outcome was only possible because all three parties – Woolworths, Rotolabel and Avery Dennison – shared the commitment to create a sustainable future together. I hope that this example of effective value chain collaboration sets a trend which sees brands actively making a positive environmental impact through responsible paper sourcing.” ■

Q1, 2020
For a product to qualify for the Avery Dennison ClearIntent portfolio, it must meet at least one of the four sustainability standards.
Reduced Use less material to help conserve limited natural resources (and capture lower costs).
ThinkThin
PE75
Global MDO
ThinkThin portfolio offers facestocks and liners that are up to 50% thinner than comparable constructions. It includes 40 micron PP (clear/white/ silver), 70gsm semigloss and 60gsm DT papers, as well as thinner liners (BG33, PET23).
PE75 is a fully conformable and squeezable label that provides high conversion speed, greater operational productivity, cost efficiencies (7% longer reel length) and is paired with the thinner BG33 glassine liner for greater sustainability advantage.
A more sustainable, semi-squeezable construction designed to improve conformable labelling, GMDO is engineered to provide a balance of rigidity and conformability with excellent strength and stability, that enable the widest operating window.

Select Solutions™
Avery Dennison understands the challenges An ever-growing selection of sustainability-oriented products includes hundreds of facestocks, adhesives and other solutions. All are made using fewer inputs, certified renewable materials and performanceenhancing innovations. Whether you’re designing more resource-efficient labels or working toward other sustainability goals, Avery Dennison can help you make labels a stronger part of your sustainability story and help to improve your environmental impact.
Enables Recycling Make your packaging recyclable. What we use can be used again.
CleanFlake™
Glass Recycling
WashOff
CleanFlake features a breakthrough adhesive that eliminates contamination of PET plastic by allowing label and container to neatly part ways during the recycling process, improving yields of recycled PET plastic.
Glass Recycling is a label solution that separates cleanly from the glass cullets during the recycling process, removing unwanted material from entering the recycling stream, improving both the quality and availability of recycled glass.
An innovative dual layer construction and a unique adhesive allows labels to easily detach from the bottle in a conventional bottle washer, making WashOff a solution for manufacturers who need a reliable clear-on-clear ‘nolabel’ look for returnable bottles.

Recycled Content Give a second life to what we have already used.
rMC FSCÂŽ
Wine Labels
rMC FSC recycled facestock is made from 100% recycled post-consumer paper waste, including up to 30% liner waste. It offers a sustainable alternative with similar appearance and print performance.
This portfolio of sustainable wine labelling provides facestock made from 100% recycled post consumer waste, partially recycled facestocks, and responsibly sourced materials made from crop waste.
rPET Liner
rPE
Partially made from post-consumer waste PET bottle flakes, rPET liner is the thinnest filmic liner currently in the market (23 microns), with PET liner recycling options available.
Made with 30% recycled PE resin, rPE reduces reliance on fossil-fuel based films, consumes fewer resources, helps to keep plastic out of the waste stream, and gives packaging a more authentic look. â–

Select Solutions™
CleanFlake™ Recycled PET (rPET) is a valuable and sustainable material, with no limit in eliminating contamination from the recycling stream. The Avery Dennison CleanFlake™ portfolio is designed to improve rPET yields while maintaining all-important shelf appeal. Brands, packaging designers and manufacturers are all seeking PET packaging that supports conventional recycling, especially through clean separation during the sink/float washing process. CleanFlake™ technology meets the design guidelines from the European PET Bottle Platform (EPBP) and from Petcore, which place specific emphasis on raising the output of rPET. As a plug-and-play solution, compatible with the existing value chain, CleanFlake™ technology provides a simple route to improved recycling of PET bottles, leaving no adhesive residue on the resulting PET flakes. It improves upon existing self-adhesive labels, which limit PET recycling into new food-grade containers due to adhesive contamination. The unique ‘switchable’ CleanFlake™ adhesive enables clean label separation in a caustic bath at temperatures down to 70°C, lower than the typical industrial temperature of 85°C (performance at washing temperatures below 70°C needs to be evaluated individually per type of PET package and recycling process). Avery Dennison CleanFlake™ portfolio offers a wide range of facestocks, from FSC-certified semi-gloss paper to PP films, available in white, clear, and silver.
Key features – Allows PET recycling into rPET, which preserves a valuable raw material – Available with paper and film material in white, clear (“no-label” look) and silver – Available with FSC-certified glassine liners and rPET23 liner made partially from Post Consumer Waste (PCW) PET bottle flakes content; the first attempt towards closed loop recycling! – Plug-and-play solution
Application areas – Labelling of existing or new PET bottles, PET trays and thermoforms, PET containers and other types of PET packaging aimed to be further recycled.
26
Conversion information CleanFlake™ Flex has been designed specifically to enhance shelf appeal while accommodating the dimensional changes associated with freshly blown and immediately labelled PET bottles and containers. In addition to the choice of substrate, ink systems should be tested for suitability with design guidelines, without negatively impacting conversion or finished label quality.
To ensure clean separation between the label and the PET flake, the final (print+label+adhesive) layer must have a total density of less than 1.0 gram/cm3.

The need for low migration As per the European Union’s 2005 guidelines around plastic packaging materials, & U.S. FDA guidelines for pharmaceutical industry: Container Closure Systems for Packaging Human Drugs and Biologics.” the “packaging components should be constructed of materials that will not leach harmful or undesirable amounts of substances to which a patient will be exposed when being treated with a drug product.” The chief way that regulatory agencies in the U.S. and Europe are encouraging pharmaceutical companies to address migration issues is by requiring that they use low-migration label materials. The term low migration is used because some amount of migration will always occur in plastic packaging. However, if the migration or interaction happens within the accepted window determined by regulatory authorities, the packaging components are deemed safe for use. There are two certifications that pharmaceutical companies can obtain to certify low-migration label materials.
SthAsia
Certifications can be secured through the independent, globally accepted testing agency, under ISEGA (As per EU guidelines ) & 21 CFR 175.105,(US Regulation) guidelines Typically, ISEGA certification can take up to two years to complete before the label is cleared for companies to use in production, making it a long and costly process for businesses that want to get their products to market quickly and efficiently. At the same time, this certification is necessary for pharmaceutical companies if they want to sell products with plastic containers to the European or the U.S. markets.

Blood and Plasma Bag Blood and plasma bags present unique labelling challenges. Low-temperature performance is essential, to enable storage in refrigerators and freezers, and other demanding criteria must be met. Permanent adhesion is required for reliable identification – without ‘backup’ methods such as using rubber bands. Labels also have to offer simplicity to busy users in hospitals, attaching easily without warming, wiping or drying a bag surface. Avery Dennison blood and plasma labelling materials offer shorter operational times for end-users such as hospitals and blood banks, and lower error rates – with consequent cost savings and reductions in material waste. The portfolio is non-PVC, and meets expected upcoming regulations to stop the use of PVC in these applications. The labels in our portfolio comply with FDA and European food regulations, and have been approved by ISEGA testing institute according to DIN ISO 3826 for “Plastic Collapsible Containers for Human Blood and Blood Components”.
Key features – Strong adhesion at low temperatures – Labels follows curvy surfaces – easier to attach – PVC-free (no DEHP plasticizer content) – Helps reduce waste of life-saving products
Application areas – Plasma bag labelling – Pharmaceutical applications at low temperatures – Human and animal health: blood fractioning, stem cells, serum ,primary blood bag label

Drum Durable, proven materials featuring BS 5609 Section 2 and 3 certification Seeking a reliable solution for labeling industrial drums carrying chemicals? The Avery Dennison Select Solutions™ Drum portfolio offers an impressive track record of proven performance on a broad range of containers and surfaces. Whether for painted steel or molded polyethylene drums, our film and heavyweight paper facestocks have been chosen for their ability to withstand harsh environments and outdoor exposures. In fact, all our drum portfolio facestocks have passed BS 5609 Section 2 and 3 Marine Immersion label testing, including a threemonth exposure to saltwater, as part of International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG certification). Our Drum Portfolio facestocks are combined with our best-in-class adhesives to offer needed versatility. Because these labels are typically hand-applied, drum adhesives must be repositionable to amend misapplied or misaligned label applications. The adhesive must also wet-out quickly to become permanent, remaining highly durable over a drum’s long-term exposure to the elements.
Key features – Consistent adherence to a range of drum surfaces – Strong enough to withstand ongoing outdoor exposure – Weather- and temperature-resistant – Impervious to contact with aggressive chemicals and saltwater – Highly adaptable to varying container sizes and diameters – A range of cost and performance options – Materials suitable for thermal transfer and laser printing – Repositionable adhesives

The expanded Avery Dennison Drum Portfolio makes choosing label materials a breeze The Avery Dennison Drum Portfolio includes a wide selection of printing materials that are certified for BS 5609 sections 2 and 3. These certifications encompass specific label constructions for printing on specific OEM equipment. Our Drum Portfolio has grown as this market has grown, and as shippers have adopted a wider array of printing platforms.
true—and has for a long time. We’ve invested in the technology, the expertise, and the OEM relationships necessary to create a portfolio of products and testing services that removes many of the toughest hurdles faced by converters who serve maritime shippers.
Today, the portfolio includes offerings for the commonly used flexographic, laser, thermal transfer, and UV Inkjet OEM printers used in drum printing. More recently, the portfolio has again expanded to align with the growing trend of waterbased inkjet drum-label printing.
Our product portfolio is built on a foundation of proprietary adhesives. These offer high repositionability, fast wet-out, and outstanding durability with long exposure to the harsh elements of marine environments. It also features facestocks certified for not only flexographic, laser, and thermal transfer, but inkjet.
A portfolio that makes BS 5609 materials selection easy It’s likely that very few people involved in drum labeling would write “BS 5609” and “easy” in the same sentence. BS 5609 represents a strict and specific set of rules to ensure labels can withstand the harshest conditions.
SthAsia
When converters do business in the maritime drum and container space, there really is no alternative. All label materials—adhesives, facestocks, and inks—must be compliant and certified for the BS 5609 standard. For many Avery Dennison customers, however, “BS 5609 made easy” rings
A broad and growing portfolio
These constructions can be used on a variety of surfaces, including painted steel, polyethylene drums, totes and super sacks. All have passed BS 5609 Marine Immersion label testing.
Aligning with the waterbased inkjet trend
more OEMs enter the space—such as Primera, NeuraLabel, Afina, and Colordyne. We’re working closely with these companies to test and certify our materials for their equipment as we continue to expand our portfolio.
End-to-end technical and customer support As with any Avery Dennison product, we offer technical support spanning simple answers and product selection guidance, to more in-depth services. Our Global Client Services Laboratory (see article, page 16), can conduct an array of tests to ensure a converter’s preferred label construction is compliant. Compared to third-party testing, our lab offers similar confidence with a much faster turnaround. The bottom line is that there really is little reason for label converters to stress over compliance with BS 5609. Avery Dennison offers the solutions shippers need.
Most recently, we’ve grown our portfolio to align with trends in printing platforms used for BS 5609 labels. We’ve offered constructions that are BS 5609-certified for Epson water-based inkjet printers since that company introduced the trend a few years ago. Today, we’re seeing

Cable Identify every cable with a cable label Keeping track of cables in cabinets, workstations and offices is essential when installing, repairing or troubleshooting. Reliable part identification and branding depend on good printability, usually with thermal transfer printers and ribbons. Smaller diameter cables need more flexible films and higher performance adhesives. Avery Dennison materials minimize ‘butterflying’ by combining a flexible film with a high cohesion, high shear adhesive.
Key features – Good printability – Good resistance to ‘butterflying’ – High performance adhesive and flexible facestock – UL-recognised, flame retardant and UV-resistant options – White, highly flexible materials for flag labels – Transparent, highly flexible materials for wrap around solutions
Application areas – Supports wide range of cable applications – Flag labels with space for text/barcodes – Wrap-around labels where space is limited

Flag labels Flag labels offer a lot of space for printed text or barcodes. Avery Dennison products use a white, flexible facestock and high-performance adhesive for optimum long term bonding.
Wrap-around labels
SthAsia
Wrap-around labels provide less space for printed information, giving a cleaner look – especially when labelling multiple cables when flag labels can look cluttered. A white text field is typically printed onto a transparent material, allowing the end-user to first create printed information, then apply the label around the cable and overlaminate the print by wrapping the transparent label around the white, thermal transfer printed area.

Overlaminates Performance and versatility at the highest level of durable goods labeling Overlaminate materials are important components commonly used to ensure the performance of durable goods labels. In order for the label to maintain its desired function over life of the item it’s adhered to — be it identification, tracking or branding — these film materials protect printed label graphics from scuffing and fading, which in turn keeps them functional. Avery Dennison offers an extensive collection of overlaminates built for a variety of end use applications. Our portfolio includes Lexan®, clear print-treated, clear topcoated, clear UV and matte polyesters.
UL® recognized – Included in the Avery Dennison Select Solutions™ Overlaminate Portfolio are UL®/CSA recognized clear PET films that meet UL 969 requirements. These qualified overlaminates and Lexan simplify the process for a label adoption, significantly reducing the time, cost and effort of adding a product to a UL file.
Proven functionality Avery Dennison overlaminates have been tested in our Mentor Innovation Center to meet the requirements of a variety of environments, conditions, temperatures and OEM standards. The tests include: – Legibility
– Adhesion
– Defacement
– Taber Abrasion
– Chemical Exposure
– Water Resistance
– Humidity
– Environmental Resistance (Cold/UV)
– Heat Aging
Aesthetic versatility In addition to functionality, our overlaminates have been chosen based on their high-performance aesthetics. The elements include: – A richer look that appeals to consumers – The ability to stiffen a construction for better application alignment creating a flush, no-label look
