B

ehavior is the mirror in which everyone shows their image. Thus said Goethe, a German writer 200 years ago. And although two centuries have passed, this statement makes me question the present with such an unsettling freshness. Living on the margins of a new social reorganization, the world tries to understand how we will behave from now on with the developments that came without asking any permission, taking away those we love and those we have never met, without saying goodbye. Trying to find clarity into madness, and responses in the midst of pain is above all, an exercise of self-knowledge. Creating new habits and new attitudes that are part of a larger collective, ends up revealing who we really are. The latest happenings allows us to dive into our personality matrix. And from this experience we will be able to better understand each other and potentially reprogram the way we are going to live in the new world. We know how we got into this situation. But we are still not sure how we will be in the future. Better, worse, with more empathy... or perhaps less. The world outside is changing. And I believe it will change even more. We, as individuals, will certainly be impacted in so many ways, we’re part of the change. It won’t be like before. And before our anxiety seeks answers, the decision we can make now is whether to embiggen or let ourselves be hit. Living or dying, more than the biological state of our body, is now a choice of our souls. And if Goethe said “to die is just not to be seen”, I ask you, how will you see yourself after this?

The Sofia Vergara & Foster Grant line, launching online, brings affordability to unique, fashionable eyewear styles all while giving back through Specs for Specs™ charity program BY SILVANA CAMARGO

T

HIS COLLECTION OF EYEWEAR IS MADE ACCESSIBLE to the public at a time where consumers are perhaps experiencing a greater need for affordable eyewear solutions. In this new normal where more people are working from home, spending time reading and participating in safe activities, this collection from Foster Grant provides solutions for today’s needs, at a great price. “I have loved creating my eyewear collection with Foster Grant. Not only does the brand have such a rich heritage and solid commitment to giving back to those in need, but they were fun to work with while bringing my ideas to life”, said Vergara. “I wear readers myself, and now that I am home reading so much more, I know how important they are to so many of us. I also know a woman wants to feel good when wearing them, wherever she is. I wanted to offer fashionable, chic, fresh eyewear styles, allowing women to not just to see, but to see beautifully.” Both Vergara and Foster Grant are incredibly proud to announce Specs for Specs™, a new charity initiative where Foster Grant will donate one pair of reading glasses to RestoringVision for every pair of Sofia Vergara & Foster Grant eyewear sold. Vergara’s collection of Foster Grant eyewear will support the world’s largest disability, uncorrected vision impairment. One-third of the global population, 2.7 billion people, live with uncorrected vision. About one billion people need only reading glasses to correct their vision, yet of those, more than 500 million live in impoverished communities with limited access to reading glasses. Since 2008, FGX has donated more than 11 million pairs of eyewear to RestoringVision to help eradicate poor vision around the world. “Teaming up with Sofia Vergara will allow us to shine a new, bright light on a significant global health issue, only exasperated through these current challenging times that as a company, we’re committed to solving,” said Lisa Lord, Vice President of Licensing, FGX. “Sofia’s collection of Foster Grant eyewear gives our customers a stylish assortment of eyewear at such accessible prices, with the added bonus of knowing you’re giving back with every pair purchased. We’re thrilled and thankful to partner with Sofia on this incredible endeavor, and hope her collection inspires fun and fashion, as well as very real solutions for global needs right now”. Vergara collaborated with Foster Grant bringing to life sophisticated, statement-making styles at a remarkably competitive $31-$41 per pair. The reading glasses styles feature a range of magnifications for both traditional readers, and Multi Focus‚™ Blue reading glasses that afford wearers advanced lenses with three strengths in each pair plus a blue light coating. The SunReaders— styles come in both a full magnification lens as well as a hidden bifocal style that allows for outdoor reading in style. All sunglasses and SunReaders styles have 100% UVA-UVB lens protection.

TIME FOR INNOVATION How the Coronovirus is transforming some fashion brands BY RENATA SANFILIPPO

T

HERE IS NO INNOVATION WITHOUT COURAGE, THAT being said no one planned on the life changes we had to go thru in the last couple of months because of COVID-19. As a lot of things keep on changing in our economy and social life, we’re still not sure what the new normal will be in our social lives. We will definitely see emerging new concepts and fashion campaigns that will be the result of this pandemic. We as a society have started to care more about the environment and others more than we did before this pandemic, therefore good things can happen in the fashion economy, marketing and creation. Brands and designers need to adapt to those changes. Fashion design is art, and adaptation is now required more than ever for everyone around the globe, regardless of its social level and education. With some luck and courage to change, fashion designers will innovate their brand to the environmental problems and new social rules. The collaborations of brands that we already had before will be more towards helping humanity. Pangaia is a great example of a brand that is growing its sales by caring about the world and making a movement thru their collections to help

42

nature awareness and raising money with every sale to Doctors Without Borders. Another example of post COVID-19 adaptation is Arturo Rios, a wellknown hat designer; he created some amazing facemasks that still complement his hat collection and still carrier his fashion identity. Social rules are changing as we speak; I guess that wearing a mask while flying might become a requirement for everyone around the globe. And designers already started creating matching masks for their prints and collections, so they can keep their customers happy and not forgotten during times of change. It takes courage for designers to make those change, and some people not always welcome “the new”. But do I believe that COVID-19 forced acceptance to “the new” to a lot of people. The more we surrender to the changes that we will see in fashion, the more fun we can have! We will not only feel good about having to be more creative when shopping, but we will also feel better if brands continue to make donation to charity funds. After a great fall there is always a good raise, so let fashion and creativity rise as we heal from this pandemic.

BLACK WILL NOT BE SILENCED Silence is not Power. We are all one race, and the time has come to act as one. Stand together. BY KATE CITRONE

P

ROTESTORS MARCH THE STREETS DEMONSTRATING COURAGE, PRIDE, PEACE, AND power following the death of George Floyd who was murdered on May 25th in Minnesota by a white police officer, Derek Chauvin. Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck for eight minutes and 46 seconds while his team of three other officers stood by and watched 43-year-old Floyd, face down on the pavement with blood draining from his nose and mouth while the crowd pleaded for the officers to save the innocent man’s life. George’s death started a revolutionary shift for the nation, causing the US and the countries surrounding to stand together and march against police brutality, inequality, and racism. Inequality and racism have been the bars that have imprisoned Black people of the world for centuries and although we’d like to believe times have changed in the past 155 years. The harsh truth is those bars still exist today. The chains have been removed, but ask yourselves: Are we free? With the help of social media, citizens have taken to filming the acts of police brutality and posting the videos online for others to witness. These victims who are shot, beaten, arrested, and mistreated are unmistakably Black. The supporters of #BlackLivesMatter are the driving force of this societal change. Speaking the names of our lost heroes, and chanting in unison “No Justice, No Peace” from one side of the world to the other. These heroes are encouraging equal society and anti-slavery in all aspects of life. As Viola Davis quotes as Professor Keating in How to Get Away With Murder, one of the only television shows to premiere with a leading black actress, “Slavery is branded into the DNA of America,” and it began in 1619 in Jamestown Virginia. ‘The White Lion’ brought 20 slaves across the ocean to the British Colonies at the start of the New World. These slaves were cotton pickers, tobacco growers in the fields, and maids to the white man. Blacks began to rise up through ways of rebellion and grew in size near the 1800’s, gathering to eliminate slavery. Very few rebellions were successful and never short of bloodshed. Supporters of slavery feared blacks and believed that slavery was the only way to contain their power and discipline. To strengthen the slavery codes, whites limited education to the ‘minority’ races and ruled against large public meetings between people of color. They feared the strength of influence. It was only after the American revolution, that the first call for the abolishment of slavery took place. Abraham Lincoln had a plan: free the slaves and our armies will prevail in war. And so, on January 1st 1863, Lincoln issued an emancipation proclamation stating that slaves within any state be free forever. This act freed over 3 million enslaved people and at the end of 1865, the 13th Amendment officially abolished slavery, followed by the 14th and 15th Amendment that provided slaves the right to equal protection and the right to vote. But what happens when African Americans rise up and receive a degree of American political life? There is a rebirthing of white supremacy that encourages the use of violence and takes action to renew the old ways of “Great America”. We see this exhibited in recent generations through racist organizations such as the “Ku Klux Klan” that began in 1877 and has yet to be demolished. America has been blessed with revolutionaries such as Frederick Douglas, Harriet Tubman, Malcom X, Martin Luther King, Oprah Winfrey, Tupac Shakur, Maya Angelou, Barack Obama who gave Blacks a strong voice in the media.

W

HY DO BLACK LIVES MATTER? Amidst the mass of current protests for “No Justice. No Peace” there lies a fraction of naysayers and eye rollers who are tone deaf to the wants and desires of their people. Let’s not call them racists, but rather the anti-equalists. They argue that “People die every day” and ask “Why should we protest?” Then finish with “All Lives Matter.” So…Why do black lives matter? Simply put. #BlackLivesMatter BECAUSE all lives matter. Why should black people need to prove their importance? If you need an explanation as to why one race deserves the same rights as the next in a democracy, take a look in your mirror and ask your own reflection. Why does YOUR life matter? Democracy means shared power. It means everyone can participate, even the people you don’t like or understand. The problem comes from people who feel threatened by that notion. Though the Declaration of Independence states that all men are created equal, American government has quite often excluded certain groups, and violently. Showing peace and compassion is the only way we will find the answer. Should we decide to stand by in silence, we are all equally responsible for the actions of the person beside us. Millions of people are dying across the world. Deaths that are not televised but could have been prevented. It is time for us to join together for a cause greater than ourselves: the future of the human race. We were not born to hate one another by the color of skin. We are not born with hate in our hearts. Those characteristics are taught and led by example. As is Love. It is easier to give in and give up when the odds are against you, but realize that WE are not the ODDs. We are stronger, and WE outnumber THEM. Our love outweighs their hate. This is not a “black issue”. These choices and actions affect us all. We have the power to stop it.

lenced for too long. The lives of our children matter. The future generation matters, and the remolding starts with us. We will not be silenced. Every day our movement grows in numbers and strength. To those we’ve lost, speak their names and honor their memory as the heroes that started the movement. Then stand proud and honor your own name, for you are the saviors that fight to keep the world from falling backwards into the shadows of the past and you face the challenges that others are too afraid to stand against.

D

O YOUR RESEARCH! It is never too late to educate yourself on your rights. Knowledge is power. For example, the white house was built by slaves and owned by the people for the people. The president is a figure head sheltered within public housing for 4-8 years, and the people inside are there at the bequest of the nation. They are there in servitude for the people of the United States. The revolution of 2020 is bigger than a battle of the races. It is a war between the judicial system and those it’s meant to protect. Having equality is only a piece to a much larger picture. Use the tools you have been give to strengthen your mind. Know your rights, the laws, and your history. In our world today, Blacks have ownership. Felons can vote, and women have rights. Now it is time for the Laws to be rewritten to match the demands of the rising generations that will impact unity, equality and peace for all and ensure punishment for those who advocate for racism and inequality. There was a time when reading was outlawed. Minorities— maids, slaves, commoners— were whipped, beaten, and punished for attempting to read. Libraries, bookstores and search engines are the tools you have available to you at all times. We need to design ways to put people in the position to create change. You can be a leader, a teacher, lawyer, governor, mayor, or even president. To change the world, we must change the way we see the world. This world may have started with one man, but it was created for the people. White Supremacy is a belief system created by white supremist, formed out of fear of all other races, and adopted by us as we questioned our worth in this nation. But I raise my fist to this. “We are not the minority. We are the MANY.” And we must remember that this is OUR world.

“Say Something. Do Something. Do not IGNORE racial injustice.”

PEAK UP AGAINST RACISM. Meghan Markle said it best, “The only wrong thing you can say is nothing at all” Your voice is your power. Do not choose to ignore the voices of people who desire change in the world. We have faced a global pandemic that does not discriminate against white, black, Hispanics or Asians. COVID-19 erases the lines of racial differences and affects us all as HUMANS. We wear our face masks as a sign of cooperation and protection, but we’ve had an invisible shield over our mouths for centuries, and the time has come to pull back those barriers and overcome the fear of speaking out against adversity, racism, and brutality. If you see something, say something because OUR lives do matter. We live, breathe, and die the same yet African Americans have been the chosen targets of physical violence by our government officials. With the introduction of this new revolution, the leaders of this union need to also band together to stop these tactics of separation. The world is listening, and what messages you choose to share matter. You can be your own hero! Speak freely and speak proudly. We have been si-

HEN FASHION, ART, AND PURPOSE MIX TOGETHER: a project that is inspired by the Venezuelans who cannot afford to leave the devasted country and desperately flee, hoping for some dignity for their families. It is estimated that 4 million Venezuelan women, children and men have left the country into uncertainty, but escaping from authoritarianism, a corrupted government, political collapse, hyperinflation, a worthless currency, soaring violence, lack of basic public services and food and medicine shortages. It is one of the worst refugee crises in the western world. The crisis has affected families regardless of their status or financial condition. While very few can afford a comfortable flight to restart their lives, many leave everything behind and walk thousands of miles to reach the borders of Colombia or Brazil, bringing the very little they still possess. The heavy declining process of the population’s quality of life is the element that wipes out hope and tests every person to the limit of their minds. These are different feelings, where the expectation of surviving day after day in that reality brings many types of emotions. And Lisu Vega’s job as an artist is to dive into that reality, exploring and establishing a deep connection to those feelings and utilize as a catalyst to create powerful statements. Los Caminantes (“the walkers”) is a collection made exclusively with fragments of clothing from the original refugees. Some pieces are one of a kind made with sustainable materials, the other are signature fabric tops, dresses, and pants

that were carefully handcrafted. “If I manage to achieve part of my goal, that originality will bring not only their story but the feelings of the people”, says Vega. Part of the collection is made with the photos that she printed on fabric after creating the first pieces of art, in a more playful and personal proposal, where Vega explored nature, the deep, lonely and fragile soul that everything can be in certain circumstances of life. The intention of this collection is that the pieces will convey a message so intimate, powerful and concrete, while opens a path to interact with the Venezuelan refugees and their souls. “I wanted to finish the collection during the Coronavirus quarantine, because it was the perfect time to create and develop it. The feeling of anguish that the collection addresses has been extended to the world through this pandemic, which makes this collection even more impactful. The audience will now be able to connect and understand their feelings, even if still in a way, I do not wish it to anyone”, says Vega. Vega is no stranger to fashion activism. Back in 2017, she created Resistencia (“resistance”), a collection inspired by scenes of the violent protests in Caracas against the government that left thousands injured, detained and many deaths. The collection had so much visibility at the time that multiple newspapers and magazines featured her work – including her home country, but because of the government influence, that was not well received. After that episode, most probably she would not be able to return to the country, where her family still lives.

COVID IN THE FASHION BUSINESS BY KARO DELGOBBO

T

HE CORONAVIRUS has struck society like a punch in the stomach. The virus outbreak brought along a lot of sadness and insecurity, forcing us to take a step back from our hectic day-to-day routine. That brought us to a spike of basic supplies, chaos, controversial actions, fatalities, rant, and much cabin fever around the world. It is remarkably interesting to see that despite the myriad of opinions, at the end, no one has the crystal ball to predict what ultimately it will be like. As I watch many Instagram lives from the most brilliant professionals and scholars, we still draw the conclusion that “I only know that I know nothing”. No one dares to say, but we are guinea pigs of a new era. On the other hand, we see another movement arising in the world of fashion, where people realized that they do not need that much. They may have less, but with more quality and increased comfort. Consumers started to question how the brands they appreciate produce their products, if they are made by workers paid with dignity, with raw materials that do not harm the environment. Week after week within this quarantine, brands have been making corrections and adaptations to fit into this new world, to this consumer who is more aware and demanding. The industry is rethinking on how to create products with more re-

sponsibility, quality, durability, less dependency on pure sales volume and over pilled stocks. All of this was necessary, as consumers raise their voice through social media, demanding brands more accountability in their actions, as many of their campaigns were merely words without concrete actions. At this moment of crisis, all care is taken, because the wrong action can quickly generate negative repercussions and consequently, a boycott. This consumer persona may very well restrain itself from spending and shift its focus on upcycling and customizing clothes, while opting for easy, washable, organic, and sustainable fabrics. But we will also have those who won’t change their consumer habits and will continue to think like before. While the economy and consumerism cannot stop (and it would be hypocritical not to think so), we need to turn into a more sustainable model that decreases the unemployment rate and allow businesses to recover from this devastation that the COVID crisis has caused. I believe that unprecedented times make us truly reflect, find workarounds and address structural changes into our modus operandi. Whether they will be permanent or will have an expiration date that sets us back to what it was before, we still don’t know. What I can say is we are already experiencing things that will not return for sure. May we all be wise and absorb lessons positively.

AN ODE TO THE ABSTRACT PARADOX It’s not a matter of left or right, or socialism or capitalism: it’s all about power and money, but it’s hurting an entire nation BY AVA SVOBODOVÁ

S

TORIES FROM HISTORY BOOKS AND VICTIMS OF CONtroversial and abusive political systems often cause a huge impact on us, who are outside, bringing a sensation of indignation and powerlessness. An immediate question that rises in every person that reads causes and effects of these regimes is why? When reading about the Nazi movement, or the inquisition in the Middle Ages, we put ourselves on the opposite side, in the position of guardians of justice, moral and logic. But the truth is that questionable matters, when it comes to politics, never goes old, and the “why” that haunts us since the dawn of civilization is today more evident than ever. In a country commonly known for its top models (Gisele Bündchen, Adriana Lima, Alessandra Ambrosio), remarkable fashion and beauty (Brazilian bikinis, the Brazilian blowout), cheerful culture, welcoming people and pacifist politics (at least from the international relations viewpoint), it now rises to the eyes of the world as the land of absurdities and scandals. Responding to the “why” is much more complex than in other countries with troubled regimes. If you are one of those people who don’t like simple answers and is intrigued when the obvious is never what it seems, I welcome you to Brazil. The Brazil that returned to full democracy only 30 years ago dropping an authoritarian military regime, seems that it still cannot provide the freedom that its people conquered, either by the end of slavery 132 years ago or by the adoption of a new constitution in 1988. All the abundance and diversity of natural resources, and conditions for a stable and strong economy, does not seem to be enough to lead this country

to development, in the face of a cultural and political legacy that over the centuries have eradicated all the potential that Brazil could have. In recent years, the political scenario has been extremely turbulent, from the impeachment of two presidents, to the creation of the largest anti-corruption operation that has ever existed in which billions of dollars have been illegally appropriated (known as Operation Car Wash), to the arrest of politicians, executives of large corporations and even a president. As many Brazilians say, “Brazil is not for amateurs”. All this trajectory leads us to observe its most prominent character: current president Jair Bolsonaro. This former army captain (yes, a former military man from the dreaded military regime that the population has unanimously rejected in the past, and a popular paradox), who for 28 years was under the shadows of politics, being virtually inoperative as a State and Federal deputy, appears as the bastion of moral, family values and honesty. Bolsonaro proposes to be the new, to undo the ties to the old politics, to eradicate all white-collar corruption and optimize the slow and inefficient public service machine. He promised to appoint true technical managers instead of political referrals. But the second paradox was already being uncovered at this point, because when he affirmed his commitment to do it differently, he was already speaking in the old language that his fellow populist politicians have been making. New or more of the same? Time is telling that with almost a year and a half of his government, and the answer seems to be clear. The increasing presence of the president’s sons as

COCO BEFORE CHANEL

*Amelie * star Audrey Tautou plays the young designer Gabrielle Chanel in this biopic about Chanel’s early years as a young seamstress. Did you know her boyish silhouettes that went on to revolutionize women’s fashion in the 1920s were inspired by her boyfriend’s clothes?

THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA

What kind of fashion movie roundup would this be if we didn’t include The Devil Wears Prada? It’s become a cult classic for good reason: it’s hilarious, smart and total eye candy for any fashion fan. Andy’s Chanel looks and Miranda Priestly’s collection of crazy coats and bags still inspire us even ten years after its release.

FUNNY FACE

We’re throwing it back to 1957 with this Audrey Hepburn musical, a must-see for any fashion fan. Audrey plays a bookshop clerk named Jo who is discovered by photographer Dick Avery (played by Fred Astaire and based on famous fashion photog Richard Avedon) and becomes a modeling sensation for Quality magazine. Despite her misgivings about the fashion world, Jo flies to Paris with Dick and finds both herself and a true love. It’s absolutely breathtaking to watch Audrey flit about Paris in stunning costumes by Givenchy, but we also love her iconic bookshop uniform of black cigarette pants and a turtleneck.

THE NEON DEMON

In this 2016 horror movie, Elle Fanning plays Jesse, a young model who moves to Los Angeles, only to find herself lost in a cutthroat, often scary world of fashion, beauty, and style with a serious dark side. The people around her are obsessed with her youth, and Jesse learns to defend herself against the evils of the industry in more ways than one. We’re pretty sure this isn’t quite what the modeling industry is actually like, but the gorgeous cinematography and costumes of Neon Demon make this flick worth watching.

ZOOLANDER

Hey, it’s about the fashion industry and Ben Stiller always makes us LOL, so that’s reason enough to include it on this list — just remember that there’s more to life than being really, really ridiculously good-looking.

PHANTOM THREAD

In his final film before retirement, Daniel Day-Lewis plays an obsessive-compulsive dressmaker for the wealthy in 1950s London. The film provides an honest insight into how much work actually goes into creating couture garments, and for fashion lovers, watching it is almost an emotional experience.

YVES SAINT LAURENT

FUNNY FACE

ZOOLANDER

This French biopic spans over more than a decade of designer Yves Saint Laurent’s prolific career, including his controversial dismissal from the house of Dior and his lifelong, often tumultuous relationship with Pierre Bergé. Actor Pierre Niney was only 24 when he took on the difficult role to justifiably rave reviews.

CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC

From the title alone, you know this film is going to feature high amounts of fashion. This 2009 film, based off a book by Sophie Kinsella, is about journalist Rebecca Bloomwood (played by Isla Fisher), who’s so addicted to shopping that she ends up drowning in debt. While trying to get her foot in the door at fashion magazines, Rebecca accepts a job at a financial publication as its advice columnist, and her writing turns into an instant hit. Meanwhile, Rebecca still has a mountain of bills to pay off—how will she do it?

KINKU BOOTS

Charlie, who has taken over his family shoemaking business since his father’s death, must find a way to save the factory. When he creates an unlikely friendship with local drag queen, Lola, the two work together to create shoes for drag queens and bring new customers to Charlie’s family business.

GIA

Angelina Jolie stars in the HBO film Gia, which tells the heartbreaking true story of Gia Carangi. The 1998 movie documents Gia’s rise as one of the US’s first supermodels, before being caught in a downward spiral of drug addiction. It makes for a pretty harrowing watch at times, but it’s a film well worth seeking out. GIA

When patients want clear and radiant skin, TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) pulse taking and facial and tongue readings can show accurate diagnosis to outline a treatment plan that is unique to that individual. I truly believe that the least invasive and more natural, the better are the results for a youthful, healthy and radiant skin. This is why Holistic Facial Rejuvenation treatments work well because treatments are tailored to meet unique body needs and skin health.

According to TCM, the face can be an indicator of health or disease. In fact, think of the face as a mirror to your health. What appears on your face can provide clues on what’s going on with certain organs in your body. For instance, the chin corresponds to reproductive organs, tip of the nose corresponds to the heart, and cheeks corresponds to lungs. When any of the organs get out of balance, symptoms will manifest on the corresponding areas of the face. Cosmetic acupuncture works to address the underlying root cause of skin conditions. When balance is restored within the body, the skin will show healthy and vibrant.

Centuries ago, the Chinese discovered and found a way to change energy flow within the body to initiate healing. They knew way back then that placing acupuncture needles on certain points along the body and face helped to increase blood circulation. With more blood flow to tissues, especially the face, natural radiance occurred. When blood flow gets disrupted, signs of aging manifest on the face and pain on the body. If you are looking for a safe, all-natural facial rejuvenation therapy while improving overall health as well. Treating skin should focus on healing the gut first. Why? It’s because improving gut health is key in transforming your skin. When your gut health is poor, your skin reflects the disharmony occurring within the gut. For example, having a leaky gut can increase inflammation and toxins in the bloodstream resulting in acne, rosacea and/or eczema. TCM understands that any disharmony occurring internally is going to be reflected externally on the skin. Having long lasting clear and radiant complexion starts within the gut.
