BEAUTY TIPS

Wear Red Lipstick like a PRO! BY JESSICA THOMPSON

D

O YOU GET THAT NERVOUS FEELING RIGHT BEFORE YOU ARE ABOUT TO APPLY THAT RED LIP? But you know adding a red lip to your makeup look will just give you that boost of confidence and complete your look? I sure do. And to be completely honest I usually tend to stay away from wearing red lipsticks or glosses, mostly because it can be such a hassle to apply and keep neat. But I have found some tips and tricks that have been super helpful.

1: 2: 3:

First helpful tip; exfoliate and moisturize your lips. With red being such a bold color, you want to be certain that the focus is on how beautiful your lips look, not how dry and flaky they are. You can make a super quick lip scrub at home with just honey and sugar. Second tip and probably the most important, apply lip liner! Lip liner defines and shapes your lips, giving you the perfect pout. If your lips are on the thinner side, overdraw your lips with the liner which will give the illusion of a fuller lip. Nude lip liners are a perfect beginner color when learning to line your lips. My go to lip liners are from The Ladycode Shop. Lastly, concealers are MUST. Apply concealer with a tiny brush to clean up the edges and perfect the shapes of your lips. It will also help keep the color from “bleeding” onto your skin.

A red lip will forever be classic and sexy! Here are a couple of my favorite lipsticks. Mamacita- Matte Liquid Lipstick ($20) can be found on solsisbeauty.com. This liquid lipstick is vegan, cruelty free, and gluten free. Another favorite is Haute Pants ($24) from Mac Cosmetics. This powder kiss liquid lipcolour provides a whipped, mousse-like texture that delivers a moisturizing matte comfortable color with ten hours of hydration and can be found on maccosmetics.com.

THIS MAY ADD AN EXTRA 10 MINUTES TO YOUR DRYING ROUTINE BUT WE’RE SURE YOU AND EVERYONE ELSE WILL NOTICE THE DIFFERENCE! 1:

Section your wet hair. My personal preference is to have three sections, the back section, (think mullet), then the two sides, framing your face.

2: 3:

Work from top to bottom. When blow-drying you want to start at the top of your head, near the crown. As a matter of fact, we prefer to start with the crown! Then work your way down in horizontal sections. Velcro roll as you go. After you have grabbed that top section, the crown of your head, use a round brush and blow dryer to pull the hair straight up towards the ceiling and dry it tight against the round brush. If you plan to touch the dryer to the round brush make sure you have a protectant nozzle so you don’t burn your hair! Once it’s dry, roll it up on a velcro roller and pin it in place at the roots. That’s it! Repeat the process working section by section from top to bottom.

4: 5:

Let it sit to cool. I like to let the velcro rollers sit while I’m doing my makeup. As long as the hair has time to cool, you can remove them at any time. Try adding products that may help for your hair type. Here are some products I have had great luck with! Root volumizing powder/spray/mouse, heat protectant spray, dry texture spray. Just remember don’t overuse products towards the ends of your hair, as it may weigh it down.

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO BECOME AN INFLUENCER? I am in love with content creation and music. Social media has become my public diary, fashion blog, and lifestyle journal. I started taking content creation seriously at the beginning of 2019. I figured if I had MEGA and Celebrity influencers in my inbox asking little ole me about “what products do you use” OR “which app do you use for filters” OR “who does your color” that I was already an influencer. Every concept and idea related to my endeavors has been self-taught. I am always looking for new ways to stand out and exponentially increase my partnership’s reach. I strive to share authentic, friendly, and inspiring content.

of people in my direct messages asking me how. The recipe is really having great content, trying to stay as true to yourself as possible, and engaging with the people who follow and support you. YOU HAVE THE MOST FLAWLESS SKIN. ANY BEAUTY TIPS FOR US?! Honestly, I stay out of drama and I don’t interact with toxic people or situations. I do have a facial routine but it’s very simple- I just wash it, and keep it clean. When I don’t have to wear makeup, I don’t. Every so-often I do a charcoal face mask to clean out my pores and remove any excess dirt on my skin. That’s it! I could do more… maybe drink more water and learn the perfect skin routine but who has the time?

WE SEE YOU HAVE PARTNERED UP WITH KKW BEAUTY! WHAT IS THAT LIKE? I love makeup and I love being able to transform my look. It’s like art, so when I began receiving their PR boxes, I was over the moon excited. I still am! It’s one thing to receive PR from a company that is so well known- but it takes it to a whole other level when the product is actually good. WHAT IS THE SECRET TO BLOWING UP ON INSTAGRAM? It’s funny because I don’t even feel as though I’ve blown up yet. I remember looking at content creators with the following that I have now in complete awe. Now that I’m there, I feel like I have so much more to accomplish. I don’t think there really is a secret, because I get a lot

TELL US ABOUT YOUR BRAND, THE BUBBLE MARKET. The Bubble Market is actually my “brobby.” It’s a cross between a business and a hobby. I started it with my sister Lynn in 2016. We were really gravy on making bath bombs and bath milks. That’s what we were known for. We took a long break to sort out our life paths. Finally at the end of 2020, we decided we wanted to bring the market back. Making the products for the Bubble Market is a form of therapy and it’s something that brings me so much happiness. WE ALL HAD TO OVERCOME ADVERSITY THIS PAST YEAR. WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU HAD TO OVERCOME DURING THE SHUTDOWN AND HOW IS THAT BLOSSOMING NOW IN 2021? I learned how to say no last year. I know this may sound strange, but I also learned how to say goodbye and mean it. I was in a toxic job, dealing with toxic people, and it was detrimentally affecting my health. Learning that certain situations are simply not worth it- was the best lesson I could have taught myself. Accepting that I, myself could be to xic and sometimes even facing my own issues has really helped me mature and love the woman that I am becoming.

THE SELF CARE CORNER

W

HEN I WAS YOUNGER, MY parents (and my Kindergarten teachers) always enforced the golden rule: “Treat Others How You Want to be Treated.” The rule would be posted on gold stars throughout classrooms, and also dictated to me at home. It’s simple really. People just want to be treated like people. Confession: Despite me being now twentytwo, I still always reflect back to that Kindergarten ideal. Although this childhood rule is golden, it’s lost a little shimmer throughout my adolescent and transitioning adult years. I’m a college graduate and no longer in classrooms, but I realized that as I got older, in general the rule was almost forgotten amongst people. It’s as if people had simply abandoned the rule of basic

out of, whereas selfishness is a trait we kind of instinctively know. I mean how many times in a day are we told to “Always put yourself first”? More often than we care to admit. Although this is something we should do, there is a fine line between setting boundaries for your overall well being, and being a toxic individual. We hear the word toxic probably everyday of our lives. From describing relationships, to friendships, to even parental figures. What exactly does it even mean? To this day, I have only my own narrowed view of the description of a toxic person from what I have experienced. Someone who is self serving, egocentric, and even at times a bit self sabotaging. Wait, doesn’t some of that also describe me occasionally?

Maybe I’m The Problem BY MCKENNA KELLEY

human decency that was expected of us since age five. I could see the ways in which people disregarded it, and at times as in some cases even myself. What seemed like such a fundamental value, now was a selective choice. Although I always prided myself on being a kind person, which I can attribute to my upbringing, there were times when I saw how easily it was to be selfish. In a world of societal hierarchy and greed, selfishness is usually rewarded. The truth is, what nobody really tells you, is that being outwardly understanding of others and compassionate is actually selfless. Due to our societal structure, selflessness is something people actively choose to opt

28

| MARCH 2021

The hardest self discovery I had to learn was the fact that sometimes I could be toxic too. Looking back on failed relationships and tainted friendships, it was sometimes difficult for me to admit the fact that at times I actually contributed to the problems. For instance: When an important friend in my life at the time tried to talk to me about my behaviour in our friendship, I combatively defended and denied what I subconsciously knew. I was the toxic one. With some introspection I began to see that the problem wasn’t owning up to my past mistakes, it was the fact that when people would give me honest criticism, I oftentimes saw this as a negative attack on my self

worth. This is something most people usually do when we go through the world operating from a place of ego, instead of from a place of understanding. This mostly leads to self sabotage in both personal and professional relationships. The truth is criticism isn’t hard to take, it’s the self discovery that comes after the delivery. It’s coming to terms with the fact that you in fact do not know everything, and must grow in order to move forward. The hardest part of this new self discovery, if you choose to take the advice given, is holding yourself accountable. Why? Because choosing to take accountability is not only demanding, but humbling. Humility and selfishness do not pair, therefore in a society that deems selfishness acceptable, taking accountability for your actions is usually a last resort. Taking accountability forces you to see another person’s perspective, and requires you to be vulnerable. It is much easier to play the victim. Sadly, victim mentality is at an all time high. I’m not talking about unfortunate situations where you can actually fall prey to being a victim. I am directly speaking about the mindset that we have the tendency to embody, which tells us that in every situation it is not our fault. I realized a common theme in the fallouts I had experienced in workplaces and in relationships. I examined that the storyline ending was always the same, I was the one wronged. While some situations were entirely out of my control, after a hard examination of the ones that may have been,

THE HARDEST SELF DISCOVERY I HAD TO LEARN WAS THE FACT THAT SOMETIMES I COULD BE TOXIC TOO I realized things I did and tolerated, did not warrant me feeling like a victim. This hurt, but the realization forced me to grow. I had to understand that at a time, I started to only attract toxicity into my life by adopting the ideal that I would always be hurt or upset. It was something that was subconsciously premeditated and therefore manifest-

ed into my reality. It was in this space of unlearning that I taught myself how to actually set boundaries, and learn the discipline of taking responsibility. In other words, I started to grow up. In turn my friendships, and relationships both old and new started to blossom. I created a new space inside myself to accept what I deserved, because I was giving others the full extent of what they deserved. So you’re almost done with this article and have realized you are the toxic one. Now what? Well firstly, congratulations! Trust that not everyone has that level of self awareness. Secondly, know that just because you can be toxic,

does not mean that you have to choose to stay as a toxic individual. There are usually underlying factors that contribute to our harmful behaviors. Some major contributors I realized from my period of toxicity in myself were feeling insecure, unsafe, or unworthy. It is also knowing that toxic traits are in fact a form of self destructive behaviors, that allow us to cling to comfortability. Sadly, we never evolve in our comfort zones. In truth, our comfort zones and insecurities contributing to toxic habits prevent us from experiencing genuine connections and all life has to offer. Lastly, know that there is nobility in accountability. Once you identify the source of your behavior, it is important to take ownership for things you could have done differently, more effectively, or just more genuinely. Choose to change moving forward. My journey of self discovery is far from over. Yet, the older I get, the more I see that it isn’t really about finding yourself, but more about coming back to who you always were. Oddly enough I think for me it’s getting back in touch with that Kindergarten kid, who always got a gold star for following that golden rule.

Day to Day wi t h Dr. Renae

ARE FACE MASKS AFFECTING YOUR MOUTH?! BY RENAE SWEENEY, DMD

F

ACE MASKS HAVE BEEN SHOWN TO HELP PROTECT AGAINST THE COROnavirus, but prolonged use has also led to some smelly side effects. After almost a year of the pandemic and wearing masks, we are seeing an increase in dental issues like dry mouth, cavities, jaw pain, and gum disease. Why are we seeing this?! Well, mask wearers are typically breathing through their mouths instead of their noses. This is leading to increased dry mouth and muscle soreness (jaw pain) from keeping the mouth open for long periods of time. When the mouth is dry and there is not enough saliva to flush food particles from our teeth, bacteria starts to thrive. In the presence of sugar, bacteria will start to feed in the food debris, producing acid which leads to tooth decay (cavities). This same dry mouth can also lead to bad breath or halitosis. This occurs from the odor-causing bacteria present in our mouth and prolonged dryness in the mouth makes it worse — gross, I know. This is why you may notice a change in the smell of your breath whenever you’re wearing a face mask. This combined with lack of proper hydration is making mask wearers very aware of their breath. To combat these issues, dental professionals recommend breathing through the nose, drinking plenty of water, use sugar free mints/gum, mouth rinses, and maintaining proper oral hygiene to avoid dry mouth and the dental problems that come with it. Check out some of these products to help with dry mouth related to mask wearing!

Q & A with Dr. Renae: Veneers Q:WHAT IS A DENTAL VENEER? A: Veneers are a thin layer of resin composite or porcelain that covers the front surface of a tooth to enhance its appearance. Some dentists may use a “full coverage veneer” or crown to produce the same esthetic effect. Q:WHY WOULD A DENTIST USE A CROWN INSTEAD OF A VENEER? A:The only difference between a veneer and a crown is that a crown or “full coverage veneer” encases the entire tooth, while veneers only cover the front of the tooth. Your dentist may recommend a crown or full coverage veneer if the tooth has a cavity, existing restoration, large chip/ fracture, etc. This is because the tooth requires more protection in these situations.

Q:WHY WOULD I NEED VENEERS? A:Dental veneers are a great solution for people with discolored, worn down, chipped, misaligned, spaced, uneven or irregularly shaped front teeth. Q: ARE VENEERS PERMANENT OR DO THEY NEED TO BE REPLACED? A:Veneers are not permanent. They may or may not require preparation or smoothing of the tooth. There are two different types of veneers, composite resin and porcelain/ceramic veneers. With proper care, porcelain veneers can last 10-15 years, or longer. Composite veneers on the other hand, typically last about 4-8 years.

Q:WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RESIN COMPOSITE AND PORCELAIN VENEERS? A:Composite veneers utilize a tooth colored filling material that is applied in layers to the tooth surface and sculpted directly in your mouth to achieve the desired aesthetic appearance. Porcelain veneers are thin shells of porcelain or ceramic material made in a dental lab that are custom made to fit directly over your teeth and are cemented in place. Q:DO VENEERS DISCOLOR? A:Porcelain veneers are stain resistant and do not discolor, but the same isn’t true for composite resin veneers. Surface stains may develop on them after exposure to drinks like tea, coffee, or red wine. Composite resin veneers are also prone to discoloration over time.

ASK NURSE RAMINA

! p l e H

C

i want botox but i am afraid BY RAMINA ASHFAQUE

F

EAR IS THE BIGGEST NATURAL REACTION TO GET any sort of cosmetic procedure. Most of the fear comes from funny Instagram posts, memes and television. People want it but have the fear of looking “weird” or “frozen”. I will help to inform you about the quick and easy procedure and the safety of getting Botox: We can’t blame people for being afraid due to what we see on TV mocking the appearance. The most important question about getting any kind of cosmetic injection is, who is the injector? The Botox itself isn’t to blame, but who is injecting it. If the dosage is calculated correctly and it is injected properly, you can have as natural of a look as you desire. Make sure to research your injector thoroughly and ask for before and after photos. An injector I highly recommend is Krishna Vattamparambil, PA-C at Liquivida Lounge in Fort Lauderdale. As far as side effects go, some people experience a brow or eyelid droop but that is solely on the technique and placement of the injection used, which takes me back to my point of having a proper injector. When injected, you may (very rarely) get temporary small bumps

and bruises, which if it does happen, it is very minimal and resolves quickly! Over seven million Botox procedures are done annually with little to no complications. Botox injections are pretty painless and definitely hurts less than getting a flu shot! There is absolutely no downtime and it is something that can be done on your lunch break, and then get right back to work! Botox blocks signals from the nerves to the muscles, which makes the muscle injected no longer able to contract and that is what causes the wrinkles to relax and soften. It is used preventatively and for active wrinkles. When used preventatively, you won’t have to treat them as aggressively later as if you didn’t. This is something that would be included in your maintenance routine. Just like getting your nails and lashes done every month, you would have to get it every 2-4 months depending on your metabolism. There is no face cream in the world that could take care of wrinkles the way Botox does, and that’s a fact! There are many ways to add to your beauty, but trust me, adding a few units of Botox every now and then is a safe FDA approved and reliable way to do that!

HOW I STOPPED USING

makeup wipes! BY ELIZABETH TRAN

OUR MAKE-UP REMOVING ROUTINE MAY BE UNDER looked as social media places heavier emphasis on makeup tutorials and skincare routines. However, disregarding it could also make you not realize how much waste makeup removing can collect over time. As the founder of the environmental non-profit Teens Go Green, I love promoting a minimal waste lifestyle. Every so often I collect a trash audit to see what I can cut back on. Outside of food and packaging, makeup wipes were actually my biggest trash! The problem is many of them contain harsh chemicals and are made of fibers that cannot break down over time. And don’t get me started on individual prepackaged wipes, as there is more single-use plastic compared to the actual wipe! It is a challenge because you don’t want to compromise your convenience, and most importantly your skin’s well being. Personally, my skin is very acne prone and I prefer waterproof mascara otherwise it smudges my eye shape. Before, I would use those popular blue Neutrogena makeup remover wipes but I had so many wipes leftover I had to change it. I first tried The Makeup Eraser. I went through YouTube website reviews to only see positive things when I was so

skeptical. How on earth is a fuzzy towel supposed to remove my waterproof mascara when even regular makeup removers can’t? Honestly by itself it did not live up to the reviews. Eventually my makeup came off, but I felt like I was wiping the foundation of my cheek to the foundation of my forehead. The first time I tried it I broke out all over, so I left it in my closet for some time. My roommate then introduced me to makeup remover balms and I was bewildered. I only needed a tiny piece to spread on my face and break down my makeup, to then wash everything off. I was excited to get my own when I realized I still had my waterproof mascara smudging under my eyes. I wouldn’t want to keep on trying to rub it off with the makeup balm because I would pull my under eye skin too hard. It was then the Makeup Eraser could come in handy and clear off my leftover mascara. I then used my regular cleanser to remove any leftover makeup and balm residue. You can also use a fleece blanket instead of buying the makeup eraser. And for makeup balms, I used Farmacy because I heard great things and was worried for my acne prone skin. The first time I wore full-on makeup three days straight I used the eraser and balm and miraculously had no breakouts! MARCH 2021 |

Change

is Part of Life IT GOES HAND IN HAND WITH GROWTH AND CREATES OUR EVOLUTION BY JOANNA TRAILOV

W

HEN WE STOP CHANGING WE STOP GROWing and therefore evolving. Like the season’s change, so do we. The Earth and Sun give us the resources to fuel its change energetically. Think how you feel, dress, eat, and move in the summer versus the winter seasons. We dress according to the temperature, we eat from the season’s bloom, and our activities can change based on our climates. Allowing yourself to receive the organic influence from Mother Earth can really feed you body, mind, and soul. As we Spring into a new season welcome change and allow yourself to naturally adapt to Earth Elements through your six senses. Mindfully, create awareness of what remains as your constant during times of change... recognize what morphs and flows. While change may feel uncomfortable at first it’s what’s needed, the discomfort becomes a catalyst that brings awareness and through that awareness we discover possibilities. When we are moving with the ebbs and flow of life, just as the seasons change, we change. That is the influence of harmony, Mother Earth’s grand plan. Resistance is there only to show us the contrast and develop a strong sense of what it is we want, need, and have purpose for. Embrace the revolution and allow this effervescent rhythm to unfold you and teach you. Welcome the warmth and the beautiful hues of seasonal colors, for they are empowered by the almighty Sun, indulge in the taste from the fruits of your Labor, and LOVE from divine connections enhanced by the Salt of the Earth. From this renewed palette we unleash an abundant inner beauty, seduce our taste buds, and radiate our most natural resources. This will indeed influence the seeds we are now planting with new intentions which by fall will become our harvest.

SO THE QUESTIONS ARE... • What are you planting this season? • What are your intentions in doing so? • What energy today is feeding your soil? • How can you cultivate a garden that gives you the bloom and harvest for seasons to come? What energy is no longer growing or serving you and therefore needs to be pruned or removed completely?

MOTHER EARTH IS ALWAYS IN ONE OF THREE PHASES... BIRTH, CHANGE/ GROWTH, OR DEATH/DESTRUCTION Take some inventory of what is giving “birth” in your life. What is “changing/growing”, and what is “dying/ending/destructing?” Each awareness brings an opportunity for influence. Do you like the way things are currently in your life? If the answer is yes, acknowledge all of the resources inspiring those results and continue to flow. If the answer is no, reallocate where your energy is. “What you put your attention on grows” create a new focus, try some new things, and expose yourself to a new hue that feels better and create a palette that feels authentically yours. This Seasonal change will give us all a great opportunity to cleanse what we have endured from our storms so that we can shine like the Earth’s gems we truly are... It is through seasonal change and harmonious adaptation that we are able to radiate inner beauty. From the rapture of change we experience an exuberance, a pressure that gives us such radiance, test of time, and strength of a diamond.

THE SELF CARE CORNER

G

ROWING UP I WAS NEVER ONE OF the “Popular” kids. I never had the latest trends or any of the newest Mario Kart racing games. While everyone would flock to the pizza shop after school, I would go to the library and wait patiently for my mother with my nose in a book. My long limbs were always too long for my school uniform pants and my hair was always in a neon colored headband. I was different, and although I never fit in I didn’t mind being a little peculiar. I vividly remember one sixth grade morning forgetting my always slightly crooked glasses on my dresser in a rush to make it to school on time for once. Sitting at my desk my then so called friends approached me and told me I was better off without glasses, and that they were going to do me the honor of giving me a make-

mirror, and sifting out what I thought was wrong with me. I felt ashamed of my body, so I began to skip meals. I felt embarrassed to wear glasses so now I would purposely forget them when I went to school. I was diffident about my crooked teeth so I would barely smile in photos. My perception of myself was so warped, so damaged, that for a period of time I would hesitate to make eye contact with people walking on the street. I decided keeping my head down was the easiest way to live life. I compromised my dignity to avoid being called “Ugly” at any cost. When I arrived at high school I decided I was going to reinvent myself. I proceeded to wear makeup, and tried to show off a more confident side of my personality. As I started to grow out of the awkward pubescent stage and

Body Dysmorphia

THE UGLY TRUTH THAT YOU REALLY AREN’T UGLY. BY MCKENNA KELLEY over that day. I didn’t think I needed a makeover but I accepted with gratitude in the hopes of finally fitting in for a change. When they were finished I expected to be transformed in the eyes of my middle school peers, but instead a boy shouted “She still looks like Ugly Betty!” and everyone erupted in laughter. For the first time in my life I went home that day and began to see myself differently. I locked myself in my room, looked in the mirror, and began to cry. Riddled with insecurity, from that day forward I instituted a daily ritual of going into my bathroom, staring into my

into my new body, I thought I was content, but amidst the plethora of people who started to call me beautiful a part of me still never believed themi. No matter how hard I tried to trust their compliments I still reverted back to my old toxic way of thinking. Regardless of how confident I pretended to be I still did not feel like enough. I consumed diet pills and obsessively worked out with the anxiety that I would once again be the chubby middle school kid I despised. After my encounter with braces I over wore my retainer and constantly whitened my teeth, with the fear that my crooked smile would soon

return. I fabricated a mask of coolheadedness to those around me, but inside I was fighting a battle. I had difficulty accepting people’s praises and would shoot down a gratifying remark any chance I got. The most difficult part of it all, was the fact that because others saw me as aesthetically pleasing, they wouldn’t believe me when I told them I felt like I was not. To them it looked as if I simply wanted more flattery, but in reality I hated myself. I would look in the mirror disgusted at what I saw, and keep quiet about how I felt. I eventually broke down, and an overwhelming sense of confusion washed over me. I couldn’t understand why I didn’t see myself the way others saw me. I wanted to be called beautiful my entire life but now that the time had finally come, I couldn’t accept it. After speaking with a friend about the way I felt, she said “I think you have Body Dysmorphic Disorder”. I had never heard those words in my life. Nevertheless after a late night Google search on the topic and a talk with my schools guidance counselor, I concluded that she was right. Admitting to myself that I had a disorder was the hardest part. I didn’t like the idea of something having so much control over me and I didn’t want to accept the fact that I had a problem. However, the realization that I did, reconditioned my thinking and I forced myself to try and recover from the years of damage the disorder had inflicted upon me. I began the process of beginning to align with who I truly was and heal the pain I felt inside for so long. The sentiment I didn’t realize at the time was the fact that I wasn’t in solitary. In reality an alarming one to two percent of the general population have this disorder alone. So many people quietly struggle with looking in the mirror and not seeing themselves as the amazing, alluring human beings others know and love. Can you blame us? We as a society have a debauched view of what we consider to be exquisiteness. We are constantly told to love who we are, and when we finally start to feel comfortable in our own skin, a magazine or commercial subconsciously tells us “Not like that”. We are left hopeless and disconcerted, trying

to chase an unattainable image. We are left empty and broken inside all in the name of society’s dictation of what is physically attractive. My constant self harming rituals became normality for me, like they are for so many people ashamed to admit that they too are living in distress. We live in an overwhelming perpetual fear of the word “Ugly”, when in actuality, our understanding of beauty has been force fed to us. We have been told since childhood that the anomalous parts of ourselves are “Ugly”, not unique. It took me years because of this, to accept myself and what I saw to be “Flaws”, and portray the authentic confidence I now have and could once only dream of. To say I am miraculously cured of all things self conscious, would be a lie. Body Dysmorphia will always weasel its way back into my life. The only thing that has changed is my ability to recognize that whenever I feel “Ugly”, it is frankly all in my mind. The road to self acceptance is not easy. I wish someone at the time of my disorders peak would have told me that it’s okay to not be okay. It is okay to feel unconfident at times, and it is acceptable to not feel amazing every single day of your life, even if you fit into a societal standard. What isn’t okay is compromising your self worth and your desire to be effervescent for a yearning to be well-favored in a world where the so-called beauty standard is always changing. No adoration or praise will ever be enough to combat the desolation you feel inside when you lack self love. To love yourself is the hardest challenge, but it is also the most remarkable reward. We need to relearn what we have been conditioned to believe: that not everyone can be beautiful. In all honesty as cliche as it may sound, everyone is. Our differences, those we see as abnormal, are in fact the ones that make us exceptional. The hard pill we as people need to swallow is the certitude that we can not be significant if we are all the same.
