Gulfstream G150 fleet leaders reach 10,000 flight hours
Brazilian aircraft manufacturer sets plans to establish a service centre in Kenya amid grow ing orders for its regional jet offerings. Although Boeing and Airbus retain the lion’s share of fleet numbers in the region, a hike in aircraft lease expenses for African carriers combined w ith a number of cost competitive advantages have driven further orders for Embraer’s ERJ-145 and E-Jet family offerings. Indeed, the marketing presence forged by its 110 Brasilia over the past decade has no doubt instilled a healthy interest among African carriers given its low er variable costs and reputation for reliability. Current fleet numbers for Embraer aircraft in Africa stand at 124, including 38 ERJs and 30 E-Jets w ith a further nine on order. While marginal on a global scale, Embraer has sought the potential offered by the region’s aviation sector, w hich is expected to soar on the back of solid economic grow th and a rising consumer market driving the need for greater business and leisure travel. Despite a population of 973 million and the burgeoning grow th of certain economies in Africa, the aviation sector continues to remain largely untapped. Precisely, it is noted that medium density markets for 70 to 120 seat aircraft in the region are either underserved or are devoid of air services entirely. In line w ith this, Embraer forecasts a need for a further 230 new and 150 preow ned aircraft in this segment, seeing the expansion of its African fleet to 400 by 2028. How ever, despite the potential that exists, grow th is constrained ow ing to the financial malaise affecting a considerable share of airlines in Africa. Read More

FL Technics Training: The role of know ledge engineering to im prove aircraft m aintenance As air operators seek to streamline their avenues of expenditure, increasing attention is being paid to the role of know ledge engineering in high frequency maintenance of aircraft parts and components. In line w ith this, a recently published study commissioned by Susana Ferreiro, a computer engineer of Donostia-San Sebastián, addressed several factors of assistance to air operators in reducing their maintenance costs and improving air safety in the long term. The research focused on high frequency maintenance issues including the degradation of aircraft brakes, the appearance of burrs during the manufacture of components and the deterioration of oil quality used in lubrication. The results of the study provide topical value to fleet managers seeking to optimise their maintenance expenditures w hile offering sound reasoning in support of improved standards of flight safety. ‘Irrespective of the fleet scope, maintenance costs routinely account for anyw here betw een 10 and 45 percent of annual operating expenses.
