CAE awarded contracts valued at approximately C$85 million for five full-flight simulators, training devices, and update services CAE announced that it has sold five full-flight simulators (FFSs) as w ell as a series of training devices, long-term service agreements and update services to airlines and original equipment manufacturers in Asia, Australasia, North America and Europe. The contracts are w orth a total of approximately C$85 million at list prices and bring the total number of FFS sales that CAE announced in fiscal year 2013 to 35.

For an industry that has long defined the lifeblood for many sectors of the Australian economy, it perhaps comes as no surprise that helicopter numbers in the country have almost doubled in little over a decade. Contiguous to this grow th has been the passing of new regulations aimed at broadening the focus of rotorcraft safety, w hich itself has been the subject of concern for a number of years. How ever, w ith March’s fatal crash of a Robinson R44 helicopter south of Sydney, efforts to suitably address the disproportionate share of helicopter accidents looks beset w ith further difficulty. While rotorcraft safety is underpinned by the same trends that affect fixed-w ing aircraft, the industry retains its ow n unique line of problems. Recently the deficit of pilots has been the subject of numerous discussions. With airlines being forced to park some of their new ly delivered aircraft and low er their development ambitions, many industry players are faced w ith issue of migrating professional aviators. The situation on the highly competitive market show s no signs of improving any time soon, so it is absolutely necessary to start thinking about the measures w hich could potentially be taken in order to assist airlines in retaining their experienced w orkforce. Today both airlines and experienced pilots clearly realize the perspectives of the pilot deficit, particularly in such markets as China or Russia. China is anticipating a 70.000+ pilot demand, w hile Russia is still closed for foreign pilots. In both countries airlines are forced to harshly compete for experienced pilots, particularly Captains.
