Saudi aviation liberalization must be supported by higher safety standards
Cargolux Announces Management Change
Enjoying the largest domestic market in the Middle East, the aviation industry in Saudi Arabia still hasn’t managed to replicate the rapid growth of its GCC neighbours because of the regulatory impediments. Nevertheless, as a result of the long-awaited reform, the GACA expects Saudi annual traffic to reach 100 million passengers per year by 2020. However, the increasing scope of operations still presents a lot of challenges, including those regarding aviation safety standards.Read more >
A slow-down in growth as a way to solve HR problems in Russian aviation In 2013 Russian airlines carried almost 85 million passengers (14% more than the year before), making it the fourth year of the two-digit traffic growth in a row. The results of March 2014, however, were much more disappointing as the traffic rose only 2.5%, compared to a 26% increase of the same period last year. While such a significant change might become a headache for many regional industry players, it may in fact spell good news with regard to HR-related troubles in the country.Read more >

Will North American re-fleeting reduce its HR-related challenges? With almost 45% of all global retirements over the next ten years forecasted to come from North America, the region’s commercial aircraft fleet is expected to undergo a significant makeover. However, while the overall fleet growth is limited to 0.6%, the replacement rate has serious implications for MRO providers, especially as concerns the demand for appropriately trained technical personnel. Despite the fact that the changing fleet composition in the U.S. implies slower MRO growth, the HR-related needs within the segment are still in need of careful planning.Read more >
OEMs’ pressure on suppliers: signs of upcoming crisis? Last year was a record one for commercial aircraft sales orders, production and backlog, with an astonishing 1 274 aircraft delivered. However, as low airfares drive airlines to buy new aircraft at lower prices, the OEMs have been also demanding suppliers to respond in kind to these pressures with significant price concessions. But the combination of pressure to trim unit costs and boost production could prove to be more disruptive than transformative.Read more >
Airlines' quest for lower expenses calls for higher data management standards Based on the data provided by IATA, the increasing levels of passenger traffic, lower fuel costs and higher efficiency have been the causes for better than expected financial performance in 2013. The upward trend should continue into 2014 when airlines are expected to return a net profit of $19.7B, which would make 2014 the strongest year ever in terms of net profit. However, with the demand for MRO on the rise, airlines are still struggling with profitability and new measures are needed to stem the tide.Read more >

Evolving LCCs call for more flexible HR solutions With fuel prices accounting for up to 30% of airlines’ operating costs, the carriers are still struggling to remain profitable. So far LCCs have been an exception to this rule, thanks to cheaper operating costs and quicker turnaround times. However, with even such players as Ryanair reporting reduced profits, the carriers are constantly in search for ways to reduce expenses. Read more >
