Indian demand for new aircraft forecasted at 1,750 over 20 years

I

ndia will require 1,750 new passenger and cargo aircraft over the next 20 years to meet an exponential rise in both passenger and freight traffic, according to Airbus’ latest India Market Forecast. To help meet this growth, India will need 1,320 new single-aisle aircraft and 430 widebody aircraft valued at US$255 billion. While much of the air traffic growth is expected to be driven by the fast expanding economy, rising wealth and urbanisation, ambitious government-backed regional connectivity programmes are also set to enhance demand for air travel. By 2036, Indians will each make four times as many flights as today. As a result, traffic serving the Indian market is forecast to grow 8.1 percent per year over the next 20 years, almost twice as fast as the world average of 4.4 percent. Domestic Indian traffic is expected to grow five-and-half times over the next 20 years (2017-2036) reaching the same level as U.S. domestic traffic today, making it one of the world’s fastest growing markets, according to Airbus’ latest India Market Forecast for the period. "Make in India is at the heart of our strategy. Airbus has the largest footprint in India of any international aircraft manufacturer, nationwide across all aircraft programmes. Our sourcing volume has grown 16 times over the past 10 years and it is currently at more than US$550 million annually,” said Srinivasan Dwarakanath, President – Airbus Commercial Aircraft in India. India is set to become the world’s third-largest aviation market by 2019/2020 and Airbus is well positioned to partner its growth with backlog orders of over 530 aircraft to date. The complete Airbus product line comprises the best-selling A320 Family in the single aisle market, the popular A330 and A330neo, the A350 XWB in the mid-size widebody category and the flagship A380 in the very large aircraft segment. In the freight market, Airbus currently offers the new-build A330-200F and the Passenger-to-Freighter (A330P2F) programme. India highlights: • More than 70% backlog order share; more than 60% of inservice fleet • 8.1% annual growth in passenger traffic (global average 4.4%) • India is set to become the world’s third largest aviation market by 2019/20 • New aircraft needs: 1,320+ single aisle, nearly 430 widebodies / US$255 billion • Indian passenger traffic expected to grow by five-and-half times • By 2036, Indian passengers will on average make four times as many flights as today • On average, one Airbus aircraft will be delivered to India every week for the next 10 years • Airbus secures 6,000 jobs including 1,500 engineers in India • Annual sourcing from India at more than US$550 million

Turkish Airlines Finalize Deal for Up to 30 787 Dreamliners

T

urkish Airlines announced they have finalized a firm order for 25 787-9 Dreamliners with options for five more airplanes. The firm order will allow Turkey's flag carrier to further meet the growing demand at its home airport, Istanbul's third airport, and improve the flying experience for passengers. With this firm order – first announced as a commitment last September – Turkish Airlines becomes the 71st customer to buy the 787. Together, these customers have now ordered more than 1,300 Dreamliners, the fastest-selling twin-aisle airplane in Boeing history. "We are pleased to finalize a landmark agreement that will bring significant benefit to Turkish Airlines and Turkey's aviation industry," said M. İlker Aycı, Turkish Airlines Chairman of the Board and the Executive Committee. "This firm order adds the 787 Dreamliner, one of the world's most state-of-the-art airplanes, to our ever-expanding fleet in 2023, our Republic's 100th year. The 787 will significantly raise our passengers' satisfaction and play an important role in our plans for our new hub, the new Istanbul airport. This will accelerate the steady rise of our country's flag carrier and support the growth of Turkish Civil Aviation." Turkish Airlines has continued to expand its fleet of Boeing airplanes. Recently, the airline grew its stable of 777 jets with a purchase of three more 777 Freighters. The airline also uses electronic charts and some other services from Boeing Global Services to further optimize its operations and operational systems. "We are proud to extend our decades-long partnership with Turkish Airlines and we welcome them to the growing group of elite airlines who have made the 787 Dreamliner the most preferred mid-sized twin-aisle airplane today," said Kevin McAllister, Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and Chief Executive Officer. "We are confident that Turkish Airlines will enjoy the Dreamliner's unmatched fuel efficiency, range, and superior cabin features."

I Jet Airways to deepen domestic presence with 144 new weekly flights this summer

J

et Airways, India's premier full-service international airline, will introduce 144 weekly flights in the first phase of its forthcoming summer schedule. The new schedule will feature a combination of non-stop services – several of them on unique routes being introduced for the first time in the industry, as well as direct, one-stop services between new city pairs in the airline’s existing pan India network, bolstering it further. As part of the new schedule, Jet Airways will strengthen connectivity between the country's capital and the North Eastern region via a bouquet of pioneering, non-stop services including thrice-a-week flights to Aizawl and Jorhat and four times-a-week flights to Silchar from New Delhi. The airline also commences four times-a-week non-stop service to Imphal from Delhi. Cementing its presence further in the young, urban metro city of Pune, the airline also launches new, non-stop services to Patna, Raipur and Chandigarh. Additionally, Jet Airways begins a daily, non-stop service for the very first time between Mumbai and Tiruchirappalli - Tamil Nadu's famous temple city and a religious centre, aside from a new, direct service between Tiruchirappalli and Delhi. The airline is also commencing direct, one-stop services between Mumbai and the North Eastern cities of Jorhat and Imphal, marking its return to the capital of Manipur. Imphal will also be connected with Pune with direct flights via Guwahati and Kolkata, enhancing access and connectivity between the North-East and its hubs in Mumbai and Delhi. In fact, Guwahati will play an instrumental role in facilitating this season's connectivity, enabling non-stop daily flights also to Bagdogra, Imphal and Mumbai. The upcoming robust connectivity between the North East and India’s financial as well as political Capital is expected to provide a positive stimulus to the region’s economy, boosting tourism as well as development of business and trade, leading to growth enhancement of Cargo movement. Among other network enhancements, summer 2018 will also see Jet Airways connect the holy city of Amritsar with non-stop and direct flights from its hubs in Mumbai and Bengaluru respectively for the first time. In fact, Bengaluru will witness addition of other new, non-stop flights that will connect it to the bustling cities of Indore and Patna, reinforcing the cities’ position as Jet Airways’ third domestic hub, after Mumbai and Delhi. Additionally, Jet Airways will also connect Patna with non-stop flights to Mumbai. Raj Sivakumar, Senior Vice President, Network Planning and Revenue Management, Jet Airways, said, "The burgeoning demand for air travel pan-India is increasingly witnessing guests travelling to more than one destination, reinforcing our network carrier model. Guests also prefer seamless connectivity with minimum stoppages, regardless of their city of origin. Our Summer schedule has therefore been designed to facilitate the above developments via a mix of new services - non-stop as well as direct flights, between emerging cities, key metros and our hubs in Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru, in an endeavour to promote faster, easier and more efficient movement of guests throughout our network, both pan India and worldwide. I am sure our latest schedule of flights will reinforce Jet Airways’ place as the airline of choice in Indian skies besides give a special impetus to connectivity, trade and development in each of the cities including the North East."

oom launched its on-demand helicopter booking platform in Mexico City. The Mexican capital is now the world’s second city after São Paulo, Brazil, to offer helicopter commuting services. Voom is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Airbus Helicopters that was launched in 2016 as an on-demand helicopter booking platform allowing passengers to request a seat on a helicopter within minutes. By providing a more efficient transportation option to daily commuters, it aims to address challenges associated with rush-hour traffic by offering an alternative form of transportation in some of the world’s most congested cities.

Boeing and Hawaiian Airlines will work toward finalizing this new airplane order and it will be reflected in the monthly update of Boeing's Orders & Deliveries website. "Hawaiian Airlines has been on an impressive growth trajectory as they strategically expanded service to and from Asia and North America. We are thrilled they have chosen the 787 Dreamliner to power the next stage of their expansion," said Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO, Kevin McAllister. Mexico also has a dedicated air traffic control for helicopters, allowing for more efficient air transportation. For its Mexico City customers, Voom will be available at several locations, including Montes Urales and Interlomas, plus Mexico City International Airport and Toluca International Airport. The company anticipates its Montes Urales – Mexico City International Airport route to become one of its most popular due to its promise of a ten-minute ride to the airport in lieu of the typical two-hour trip during rush hour.

Voom provides travelers both convenience and reliability in the most affordable and accessible way available today. Riders can book and take off in as little as 60 minutes or plan their trip up to seven days in advance, and only need to arrive at the helipad 15 minutes before boarding time. Offering several boardings per hour, the service’s convenience pairs with a significant savings in commute times. challenges for the Indian aviation sector are infrastructure issues, lack of trained manpower, and taxation on airline turbine fuel (ATF) that must be knocked down to make it uniform across states. Furthermore, open sky policy and capping of airfares were some of the concerns that were raised by the stakeholders during the event. For simplifying air cargo movement, two e-freight portals were launched at the event, which are among the first in the world. Mr. Claudio Camelier, VP Sales Asia Pacific & Middle East, Executive Jets, Mr. Cesar Pareira, VP, Commercial Aviation & Mr. Marcio Moreira, VP, Customer Support & Services, Asia Pacific embraer also addressed the media at Wings India 2018. Dr. B P Sharma, CMD, Pawan Hans Ltd addressed the media and said Pawan Hans Ltd aims at a growth plan to add 100 helicopters by 2025. The event had many highlights where 700 delegates participated.25 States/UTs along with 14 airlines had 285 G2B mtgs. In addition 34 mtgs held by States with Investors. Four round tables on tourism, skills, General aviation & Cargo. However, With a total of 15 aircraft by ATR, Honda, Trujet, Gulfstream, Boeing, Embraer, Dassault, Club one Air, Aeroteck, Zoom Air, Air India, NAL and others for static display, Hyderabad’s Begumpet airport was filled with lesser aircraft this time as compare to the last time. The organizers also decided to scrap the acrobatic display of planes, which also disappointed the visitors. As to visitors, the event looked like more of aviation technology based exhibition rather an airshow where they could see the aircrafts practically instead of understanding the theoretical stuff. HondaJet makes first-ever appearance at

esponding to demand for faster, more personalized service from customers, DHL has launched DHL Parcel Metro in the U.S., which the express company says is a fast and flexible service for online retailers that meets consumers’ increasing demand for same-day and next-day delivery. “E-tailers today recognize more and more that the customer experience – and their ability to build customer loyalty – is won and lost in how well the orders are fulfilled and delivered,” said Charles Brewer, CEO of DHL eCommerce. DHL’s latest efforts reflect moves by logistics companies to integrate themselves into their clients’ customer-facing experience. A botched or slow delivery reflects badly on the retailer, regardless of who handles the delivery, and logistics companies are vying to prove their mettle in this space. The delivery business is changing as fast as the technology that underpins it, and consumer expectations are evolving due to a number of major trends, including e-commerce and urbanization. DHL’s latest service aims to provide more flexible and efficient services to meet this demand. Parcel Metro utilizes customized software that gives its customers a “virtual delivery network” of local and regional delivery vendors and crowd-sourced providers to ensure maximum flexibility over the last mile. The new service is now available in Chicago, New York and Los Angeles, and will be launched in Dallas, Atlanta, San Francisco and Washington, D.C., later in the year.

SGS, Cargo iQ’s nominated external audit company, audited Emirates SkyCargo’s internal processes including the measures taken by the carrier to minimize or eliminate shipment errors and provide customers with more visibility on the status of their shipments.

Emirates SkyCargo became a member of Cargo iQ in 2016 to further reinforce its service standards including its ‘Delivered as Promised’ commitment. In less than two years, Emirates SkyCargo has integrated Cargo iQ shipment cycle management standards as the basis for its live shipment planning and tracking of cargo. “With every Cargo iQ member that becomes accredited, we are another step

Successful First Flight for

GlobalEye G

lobalEye took off on its maiden flight at 12.52 local time on 14 March 2018, from Saab's airfield in Linköping, Sweden. The aircraft, a modified Bombardier Global 6000 jet platform, undertook a 1 hour 46 minutes test flight collecting extensive flight-test data using the on-board instrumentation suite. This data is then used to verify the aircraft performance and associated modelling. The first flight was preceded by a series of ground trials including high and low speed taxiing tests. "The first flight is the second major milestone for the GlobalEye programme

within a very short space of time. Yet again we have demonstrated that we are delivering on our commitments and that we are on track with our production of the world's most advanced swing-role surveillance system," said Anders Carp, Senior Vice President and head of Saab's business area Surveillance. "Today's flight went as planned, with the performance level matching our high expectations. The aircraft's smooth handling

was just as predicted and a real pleasure for me to fly," said Magnus Fredriksson, Saab Experimental Test Pilot. The maiden flight took place three weeks after Saab revealed the GlobalEye aircraft to the media for the first time on 23 February 2018. GlobalEye combines air, maritime and ground surveillance in one swing-role solution. GlobalEye carries a full suite of sophisticated sensors including the powerful new extended range radar (Erieye ER),

integrated with the ultra-long range Global 6000 aircraft, known for its versatility and smooth flight characteristics. The GlobalEye launch customer is the United Arab Emirates Armed Forces, where it is known as the Swing Role Surveillance System (SRSS). The initial order was placed in November 2015. GlobalEye brings extended detection range, endurance and the ability to perform multiple roles, including tasks such as search and rescue, border surveillance and military operations.

Boeing Receives U.S. Navy Contract to Modernize F/A-18 Super Hornet Fleet

B

oeing has been awarded a contract to modernize the U.S. Navy F/A-18 fleet, extending the life of existing Super Hornets from 6,000 to 9,000+ flight hours. In the early 2020s, Boeing will begin installing initial updates to the aircraft that will convert existing Block II Super Hornets to a new Block III configuration. The Block III conversion will include enhanced network capability, longer range with conformal fuel tanks, an advanced cockpit system, signature improvements and an enhanced communication system. The updates are expected to keep the F/A-18 in active service for decades to come. “The initial focus of this program will extend the life of the fleet from 6,000 to 9,000 flight hours,” said Mark Sears, SLM program director. “But SLM will expand to include Block II to Block III conversion, systems grooming and reset and O-level maintenance tasks designed to deliver a more maintainable aircraft with an extended life and more capability. Each of these jets will fly another 10 to 15 years, so making them next-generation aircraft is critical.” The indefinite-delivery contract is for up to $73 million. Work begins in April on an initial lot of four aircraft at Boeing’s St. Louis production center. An additional production line will be established in San Antonio, Texas in 2019. Additional follow-on contracts could be awarded over the next 10 years. The U.S. Navy fleet consists of 568 Super Hornets.

BAE Systems agrees long-awaited Saudi order of 48

Typhoon jets T

he British company BAE systems, biggest military manufacturer of the United Kingdom, has just agreed to an order of 48 Typhoons with Saudi Arabia. This new order reinforces the Eurofighter Typhoon program whose viability was threatened less than a year ago. That new order follows an option that Saudi Arabia had placed when it had bought 72 jets in 2007. It has been placed after a three days visit of the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammad bin Salman, in the United Kingdom. The production of the Eurofighter had been reduced last year as BAE failed to secure sales. Until the order of 24 Typhoons for 8 billion of US dollars made by Qatar in December 2017, the production was expected to stop in 2022 with the dismantlement of the Lancashire production line.

Except for the four partners involved in the Typhoon program (Italy, Spain, Germany and the United Kingdom), only four others countries have placed orders for the fighter, namely Austria, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Oman. Overall, about 600 planes have been ordered, which is so far a better performance than its main competitor in the 4.5th plane generation, the Dassault Rafale.

L Israeli Air Force declares SPICE 1000 operational

T

he Spice 1000 (Smart, Precise Impact, Cost-Effective) developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems has been declared fit for operational use, Janes reports. This kit allows converting an unguided 450 kilos bomb into a both satellite and optical guided one, turning it into a highly precise munition. After thorough examination of the data collected during tests made in August 2017, the IAF Headquarters’ Munitions Department had incorporated the ordnance into the 190th and 110thFighter Squadrons – flying F-16Cs and F-16Ds – for live testing. Now that it has been declared operational, it should be fitted onto the F15I and F16I of the Israel Air Force. The two guidance methods offered by this munition allows for adaptability during engagement. While the bomb can self-operate itself using GPS coordinate previously entered into the bomb memory, it can also be manually guided by a Weapon System Officer using the camera feed of the Spice kit. This is called a ”manin-the-loop” method and is one of the most precise guidance currently existing.

ockheed Martin successfully tested a production-configuration Long Range Anti-Ship Missile (LRASM) from a U.S. Air Force B-1B bomber. During the test, a B-1B from the 337th Test Squadron at Dyess Air Force Base, Texas, launched a LRASM over the Sea Range at Point Mugu, Calif., successfully impacting the maritime target and meeting test objectives. "LRASM has now proven itself in six consecutive flight missions," said David Helsel, LRASM program director at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control. "The reliability and outstanding capability of LRASM will provide an unmatched weapon to our warfighters in their quest for sea control in contested environments." LRASM is designed to detect and destroy specific targets within groups of ships by employing advanced technologies that reduce dependence on intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance platforms, network links and GPS navigation in electronic warfare environments. LRASM will play a significant role in ensuring military access to operate in open ocean/blue waters, owing to its enhanced ability to discriminate and conduct tactical engagements from extended ranges. LRASM is a precision-guided, anti-ship standoff missile based on the successful Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile Extended Range (JASSM-ER). It is designed to meet the needs of U.S. Navy and Air Force warfighters in contested environments. The air-launched variant provides an early operational capability for the U.S. Navy's offensive anti-surface warfare Increment I requirement to be integrated onboard the U.S. Air Force's B-1B in 2018 and on the U.S. Navy's F/A-18E/F in 2019.
