Right in the Zones

From the Zones’ pavilions for key specialist sectors to the Zone theater for exhibitors to find their audience, this new approach for 2022 was the solution for all solutions

The Zones Theater saw presentations on new products and solutions from safety service providers, training specialists and hangar builders. A new maintenance repair and overhaul hangar at Berlin Brandenburg Airport was one recent project presented. Schwarzmann aircraft hangars’ project manager, Matej Lozak spoke about this double hangar and how four Airbus A320 can be maintained there. The hangar had to be insulated for its 10,000 square metre floor space and has had a sprinkler system being installed. Lozak also spoke of a hangar in Vienna with an 8050 square metre floor plan. Built in 2019, it has a maximum gable opening for easy aircraft manoeuvring and a concrete firewall between two halves of the hangar. This year’s Zones, the Hangar Equipment Zone, EASA Services Zone and New Exhibitor Showcase Zone, offered a wide variety of products and services. As well as hangar constructers, the Hangar Equipment Zone has suppliers of specialist equipment such as engine stands, ground support equipment, airframe and engine tooling, docking and access platforms, test equipment, safety equipment and more. One piece of equipment being offered to European customers is GE Aviation’s 360 Foam Wash for engines. Product Manager Matthew Gifford explained that MRO Europe was an opportunity to reach out to new customers. “I’m here to discuss our new foam technology that we use to clean engines and improve their health and efficiency, to save fuel.” The EASA Services Zone is a designated area for Part 21 (Design and Manufacturing), Part 147 (Training) and Part M (CAMO) specialists. One of the exhibitors is Baines Simmons. One of its co-founders, Bob Simmons, was clear why he chose MRO Europe. “I think it is renowned as probably being the biggest trade show for maintenance, repair and overhaul,” said Simmons. He also gave a presentation in the Theater about safety services. Simmons pointed out that regulations in the European Union had changed and also in the UK. This change was

to make Safety Management Systems (SMS) required for organization’s management systems. The EU Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) had introduced the requirement for SMS to integrated, not separate, to management systems. Safety management systems are Part 145.A.200, involving identification of hazards, risk assessments, mitigation, effectiveness verification, continuous learning and improvement. Simmons argued that incorporating safety thinking into all business activities would mean safer workers were more productive because of fewer or no accidents, for example. Another safety related training provider was Dansoft Training Services. Olusegun Johnson told the Zone Theater audience that his company was an EASA approved maintenance training organisation founded in 2019. Dansoft is a company open to collaboration with other organisations under Part-M, Part-145 and Part-147. Another Zone Theater presenter was MSA’s International executive field sales manager, Bertrand Challier. He spoke about the MSA Latchways WinGrip. The WinGrip creates a vacuum between itself and the fuselage or wing of the aircraft creating a stable point from which guard rails or safety ropes can be connected. Maintainers are still falling from wings or through partially dismantled aircraft floors. Roped to a WinGrip, safety is improved. Of the many exhibitors in the Zones, Challier perhaps summed up the value of the show best: “Now we realised that here we have the right key people., the maintenance people, the managers, the operational people who come and have a look at what is new. It’s the quality of the people coming to MRO Europe.” l
