// editor’s letter

FRESH STARTS IN HILLARY’S LAST LETTER, she talked about “growth, new beginnings, fresh starts …,” and I’m so delighted to be embarking on a fresh start to help this magazine thrive and grow. I’ve written for AvidLifesytle for a while now, and I’ve always been impressed with the high-caliber local content. And hats off to my predecessor, who did much of the planning for this issue—so the great content continues. This issue is all about our beautiful Colorado obsession with health and fitness. We talked to international fitness expert Natalie Uhling about becoming a fitness influencer and how she made a fresh start in her career to make way for being a mom of two. Creigh Kelley, Colfax Marathon race director and announcer extraordinaire, talks about how running saved his life in more ways than one over his 50+ years in the sport. To invigorate your go-to weekday meals, Gregg Avedon shares three top recipes from his cookbook for healthy, power-up meals to get you through your day and workout. Hint: There’s a one-pot dish and two delicious on-the-go meals! When you want to give your mind a workout, do it in a beautiful, serene mindfulness space right at home. We show you ways to capture a corner or a whole room for meditation, yoga, journaling … whatever activity helps you relax, Zen out and start anew.

E X P E R IE NC E D , T R U S T E D ADVI SOR.

Ready to refresh your workout? Or maybe you long for a specialized fitness routine or even require injury treatment. We’ve got you covered with introductions to some of the hottest (yes, one involves infrared heat) fitness studios and classes. There’s even something for your four-legged best friend! Before you hit the new gym or change up your fitness activities, you’ll need new footwear. We’ve got some of today’s top athletic shoe picks for a variety of Coloradans’ favorite outdoor activities. And, of course, it’s Mother’s Day month, so be sure to love on mothers of all types—your own, your mother-in-law, the women in your life who acted like a mom to you, and, of course, the mother of your children! Our On the Agenda calendar has several special Mother’s Day events to show all your “moms” how much you care.

LE DÎNER EN BLANC In 1988, Frenchman François Pasquier organized a “friends and word-of-mouth only” picnic to celebrate his return to Paris. Friends were instructed to bring a meal and a friend and to convene at a public space; they should dress in white, so they could easily find each other. Le Dîner en Blanc is a growing global sensation taking place in 120 cities across six continents. And now, this “secret dinner party” comes to Denver. The hosts of this local event are Amber Handby, music festival producer, DJ, and marketing director for Ignight Entertainment; Michael Handby, creative director for Ignight Entertainment; and Lauren Ripko, founder of Studio Q Events. To uphold Le Dîner en Blanc’s tradition, attendees must dress head-to-toe in white for this fabulous and artful picnic event. Guests are requested to bring their own portable table, white chairs, white table linens, tableware and a gourmet meal. Originality and creativity is encouraged in fashion, table setting and fine food items as long as it is stylish and tasteful. Guests should look to local businesses for their attire, decor, equipment and freshly prepared picnics. The location of the event will be kept confidential until one hour before the event begins. Clean Cuisine A Tech Center eatery makes HASSLE-FREE HEALTHY EATING a little tastier By John Lehndorff RAISE YOUR HAND if you are trying to eat healthier this spring. If you struggle with eating the right way for more than a week or a month, put your hand down. Despite our best dietary intentions, real-life logistics tend to trip us up, and we return to our old habits. “A lot of people want to eat healthy, but they say it’s too hard and it’s too expensive. Our mission is to make healthy eating easy and affordable,” says Kristi Edwards, owner of Clean Eatz. The Denver Tech Center location for a national chain features a cafe with takeout and a healthy meal source for individuals and families with all sorts of dietary needs and preferences. The other huge roadblock to dining with wellness in mind is taste. “Clean” doesn’t sound “yummy.”

“People expect healthy food not to taste very good. Once we get them to try it, they see that it can be great,” Edwards says. Clean Eatz offers weekly meal plans that remove the guesswork from portioning, a critical assist since many of us either don’t measure or think we’re eating smaller portions than we are. “Most of our meals are macro-nutrient based. It’s not about ‘you can’t have this, and you can’t have that.’ It’s all about balance of protein, carbs and fats, and portion control,” she says. There’s a rotating menu of meals you choose from. You order online and pick them up fresh. If you don’t get to them during the week, you can freeze them for later. A recent week’s meal choices included pizza loaded baked potato, bloomin’ onion chicken, salmon sliders, coconut blueberry oats and bacon cheese egg bites.

flatbreads, etc. You can opt for a smoothie or a snack like “Good-For-You” nachos or Buffalo cauliflower. The “Build a Bowl” option offers protein choices such as chicken, salmon, black bean burger and bison over brown rice, sweet potato chunks, protein noodles and more. Top it all off with veggies, sauces and spices. “The most popular wrap is the Buffalo chicken, but my favorite thing on the menu is the Grecian wrap. It’s really good,” Edwards says. A whole wheat flatbread wraps around shredded beef, romaine, red onion, banana peppers, mozzarella and Greek sauce. “My reason for doing this was that I was in corporate America forever. I was coming home late, slingin’ hot dogs and chicken nuggets, or we went to drive-thrus,” says Edwards. “I thought if we had something like this place in the community, it would be so much nicer. You can get something healthy—you can feed your family and not have so much mom guilt.”

2-MINUTE CHICKEN SALAD PITA

Power Up

Makes 1 serving

THREE HEALTHY RECIPES from local powerhouse GREGG AVEDON

WHEN YOU’RE SERIOUS about shredding weight and building muscle, you want recipes for the best meals from the best source. Local fitness expert Gregg Avedon, NASM-CPT, has been in the industry for more than 30 years, and he knows a thing or two about eating for optimal performance. Today, he’s sharing a few signature recipes from his book “Muscle Chow: More Than 150 Easy-to-Follow Recipes to Burn Fat and Feed Your Muscles” so you can power up for your fitness goals. And watch for Avedon’s new line of supplements coming this fall. INSTAGRAM: greggavedon; FITNESS INSTAGRAM: avedonfitness

On the go and looking for a quick high protein meal in a hurry—no problem! In just four easy steps you can whip up one of the best tasting chicken salad sandwiches you’ve had in a long time ... healthy eating style! Just keep these simple ingredients on hand, and it’s a snap. INGREDIENTS 1 pita bread, choose a brand with the lowest sodium 5-ounce can chicken in water, preferably organic (I like Valley Fresh brand) 1 heaping tsp plain Greek yogurt 1 heaping tsp fate-free sour cream 1 heaping tsp spicy brown mustard Pinch of dill (fresh or dried) Pinch of black pepper Shredded lettuce METHOD Put pita in toaster oven to warm. Open can of chicken, double rinse with water, strain then place in a mixing bowl. Add the rest of the ingredients to bowl and mix in without breaking the chicken apart. Once warm, cut the pita in half, fill each side with a little shredded lettuce and top with chicken salad. That’s it, and it takes less than 2 minutes from start to finish! Eat it at home, in the car or on your way out the door. If you want to give it a punch, toss a small handful of dried cranberries into the mix before serving.

POWER PASTA Makes 3 servings

I first learned a crude version of this pasta dish more than twenty-five years ago while on a modeling job in the Bahamas. Since then, I’ve perfected it to delectable proportions. So much so, that people always ask for the recipe whenever I make it. To make it easy, prepare to boil everything in one pot— all the veggies, the spices, pasta—the whole kit-n-caboodle! INGREDIENTS 1 tsp extra virgin olive oil 1 tbsp fresh oregano, chopped 1 tbsp fresh basil, chopped 1–2 tsp, red pepper, (such as paprika, Pimiento or cayenne), chopped 1 cup edamame, frozen, shelled 2 heaping cups dry pasta, (such as rotini, ziti or farfalle) 2 cups broccoli florets 2 yellow squashes, sliced into rounds 2 zucchinis, sliced into rounds 3 ½-ounce package feta cheese crumbles 1 tbsp Parmesan cheese, grated METHOD Fill a large pot with water and place over medium-high heat. Add olive oil, oregano, basil, red pepper per desired spice level, then add edamame and bring to a boil. Once the water is boiling add pasta, broccoli, squash and zucchini to the pot, cook uncovered until pasta is al dente, refer to pasta packaging for approximate cook time. Once pasta is cooked, strain pasta and vegetables until dripping but not dry. Add feta cheese to a large bowl, then pour the pasta and vegetables on top, toss until thoroughly combined. Sprinkle with parmesan cheese and enjoy. NOTE: You can mix and match just about any vegetables you desire. I like to make it colorful. Here are some combinations I’ve tried: yellow squash, asparagus and julienne-sliced red pepper. Zucchini, mushrooms, yellow squash and sun-dried tomatoes. Yellow squash, frozen peas, fresh mushrooms and fresh tomatoes.

Zen Out Create your own MINDFULNESS SPACE at home By Heather Shoning HAVING A DEDICATED SPACE for mindfulness—be it for meditation, yoga, relaxing with a book or all of the above—is pure bliss and almost a necessity in today’s hectic life. If you work from home part- or full-time, it can up your productivity to have a space to step away and refocus your mind. Whether you can carve out a corner or an entire room, we have tips for making the most of the space so you can get your Zen on. NATURAL LIGHT Having a mindfulness spot with natural light can not only boost your energy, but it can also provide a bevy of health benefits such as decreasing the risk of depression, stress and anxiety; increasing vitamin D, which can boost your immune system and giving your eyes a rest from screen-generated light, which causes eye strain. Not to mention, it’s just nice to feel the sun on your face while you take deep, relaxing breaths. ORGANIC MATERIALS Outfit your space with natural materials such as a sisal rug, comfy wool blankets and pillows, wicker baskets and beautiful green plants. A natural palette is soothing and peaceful, and plants help clean the air in your space as well as provide a connection to nature.

BRING IN NATURE In addition to plants (earth), bring in other elements such as water and fire. The trickling of a small water feature can help you refocus on your breathing when your mind wanders during meditation. A candle not only provides an additional focal point, but it also produces a relaxing scent such as calming lavender, jasmine or ylang ylang. 36

MAKE IT COZY The whole point of a mindfulness space is to relax and go within, and you won’t be able to do either in a space where you don’t feel comfortable. Maybe you need a small sofa with lots of pillows for snuggling in. Add a pouf for putting your feet up. If you love the smell of fresh flowers, keep a big bouquet on a side table. If you plan to use your Zen area after sundown, add soft lighting—even twinkle lights for uber ambiance. MOVE OUTDOORS There’s no rule that says you can’t move your mindfulness space. Take advantage of wonderful Colorado weather by moving outdoors. If you can capture a dedicated space, go ahead and take your pillows, candles, water feature and even a rug outdoors. Meditating, practicing yoga or just breathing deeply outdoors is a wonderful way to relax your mind, connect with nature and bring a sliver of serenity into your life.

WANT AN EASY WAY to connect with nature? How about a cleaner, healthier home environment? The key to both is house plants. Like an even easier way to achieve both? Plants delivered right to your front door! A handful of local businesses are making it easy for you to bring air-cleaning, attention-sharpening, productivity-boosting greenery into your home—and, yes, studies have shown houseplants can provide all of these benefits. You can embark on your green-thumb adventure in a variety of ways. Shop your local garden store, visit a specialty plant shop or order online for home delivery or a subscription plant service. Léon & George’s Castle Rock outpost offers delivery of single plants or bundles. All plants come in simple, sleek pots with a few neutral color options (mostly black, white, gray and sand). You’ll find a couple of dozen plant varieties in every size, from small (about 8 inches tall) to extra-large (up to 5 feet tall). The Sill, another online retailer, offers a similar variety of plants, but you can sign up for a subscription to have a new plant delivered each month if you’re looking to build a mini jungle! Speaking of jungle, some local specialty plant shops will provide in-house assessments to help you grow and care for your indoor wilderness. The experts at Denver’s ReRoot will assess your plant needs, observe the environment and help you build a plan to “reroot” your home. Then, they’ll supply you with everything you need, including care instructions. And if your thumb is not so green, they’ll provide weekly, bi-weekly or monthly services to keep your lush live plants in tip-top shape.

Natalie Unplugged

Colorado-based fitness influencer Natalie Uhling talks shop By Kathryn O’Shea-Evans CELEBRITY FITNESS TRAINER Natalie Uhling—founder of NUFit—has helped women around the globe achieve their fitness goals through her brand and her other fitness-related roles. She has worked with fitness leaders, professional athletes and celebrities, among others. She was a female ambassador for Under Armour and a lead female trainer on an NBCU TV platform Radius Fitness. Various media outlets have featured her, including Shape and Women’s Health magazines. After moving to Colorado in 2015, she spent two years as the master trainer for the Denver Broncos Cheerleaders. Today, she’s a mom of two, and she teaches her signature fitness method—a fullbody workout that fuses dance and spot toning, all wrapped up in self-love, empowerment and fun—to one-on-one clients. “Once I had kids, I wanted to do the ‘drop-off-and-pick-up thing’ so this schedule works best for me and where I am in my personal life,” she says. Uhling recently chatted with us about everything from the reasons busy parents should make time for a workout (it’s not what you think) to her addictive Spotify playlists.

What brought you to Colorado? We just wanted a lifestyle change, to be honest—sunny skies and great weather! I lived in New York for 11 years, went to the Fashion Institute of Technology and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in advertising and marketing. Later I worked for Ralph Lauren in product development in the footwear division and later in their marketing division. And I met my husband in New York. He’s in private equity and runs his own shop, so we were able to literally pick on a map: “Where do you want to live?” I grew up in Idaho, so the West and big skies and good weather and mountains are very familiar to me. So, we thought, “Let’s go to Denver.” And we did. When did you start NUFit, and why? I started it in 2012 with beta classes, and it took off. While working at Ralph Lauren, I always taught fitness classes as my side hustle. But there were no studios, and then everything popped: Soul Cycle, Barry’s Bootcamp. Things started getting hot in the fitness area, and I thought, “Okay, I can actually make a living at this.” NUFit is a hybrid of dance, cardio and toning, with really great music. My clients love my energy, and that we work a lot of the accessory muscle groups with light weights, lots of reps and in tons of different ways. The results are amazing. Simultaneously, I was doing fitness modeling and signed an exclusive deal with Under Armour in 2012. I was the face of the brand, traveled all over the country for them and worked with Misty Copeland, Tom Brady and Lindsey Vonn … just to name a few. I signed another three-year exclusive deal with them, and my agency at the time had never seen someone who wasn’t a pro athlete sign an exclusive with a brand like this.

So cool! How are you embracing Colorado’s particular brand of wellness? Well, we grew up skate skiing or Nordic skiing. We go up to Devil’s Thumb Ranch and skate ski all the time. It’s super fun because we can pull the kids in the sleigh behind us. It’s really aerobic. And we love to hike with our Goldendoodle. In Aspen, Electric Pass is a really fun one that we love. And then Devil’s Thumb, we’ve done that a ton. You’re a full-on Coloradan! Very inspiring. What’s your wellness routine? Since becoming a mom, my focus on being in shape has shifted. I believe the body needs to be in shape, but my real focus now is the mind. We exercise because of mental health, and that’s been so key for me. Exercise can be a saving grace for anxiety, depression … all that stuff. In my early twenties, I’d care about having a sixpack, but now it’s all about mental health. And that’s the focus for my clients, too. I wake up every day being so grateful that I can move my body. It just shifts everything in my day. When did you fall in love with teaching fitness? I’ve wanted to do this since I was a kid. If you had asked me in junior high, even then, I would have said: “I just want to teach aerobics!” I taught kickboxing when I was in high school. I’ve been a part of this whole thing for a long time and love the community. Fitness brings so many amazing people together that you would’ve never met if you didn’t see each other in a studio or have a commonality in terms of movement. I’ve met my best friends because of fitness. Last question. Do you have a couple of songs or artists you recommend for workouts? Sure! All of my playlists are available on Spotify; my profile is natalieuhling. My workout stuff is all there, just click to follow. My clients love my playlists for all of their workouts. natalieuhlingfitness.com

16 sites in The Timbers with mountain views. Award winning builder Sterling Custom Homes can create a lavishly styled and appointed home for you on one of 16 remaining sites, all of them wrapped by pine forest and sized for privacy, and with great mountain views

A

t a moment when too much talk is about what you can’t have, award-winning builder Sterling Custom Homes has a final release of home sites at Timbers at The Pinery near Parker, where you can create a home every bit as big as your expectations—four or five bedrooms, a finished walkout lower level, a four-car garage, and the chance to fashion your own, special balance of spaces, their sizes and finishes. There are only 16 of those final sites remaining at The Timbers at The Pinery in Parker, and they’re just 25 minutes from the Denver Tech Center and the heart of the south I-25 corridor. “With that combination of seclusion and easy access to urban attractions, we’ve sold custom homes in The Timbers at a fast pace all year,” says builder Woody Howarth. “And with the mountain views that each of these sites have, they won’t last long.” Sterling Custom Homes orients each home to make the best use of those view corridors and other site features. With a 20-year reputation, Sterling is widely respected for its quality, customer service, and eye-catching contemporary styling— characteristics that have made its homes fast sellers in exclusive neighborhoods throughout the Denver area. You can choose a home site in The Timbers and work with Woody on a custom design of your choosing—or you can pick from a choice selection of customshowcase homes that Sterling is now launching. The styles of those range from midcentury modern, to modern prairie, to mountain modern, with time to make your own selections of finish and trim options. Ranch plans with walkout lower levels

have been the overwhelming favorite among recent buyers, but Sterling creates family-sized multilevel plans, as well; and can create a perfect design for the family wanting multigenerational living. You can tour all 16 sites during your visit to The Timbers, and you’ll see how close this is to major grocery shopping and choice Douglas County Schools. The Timbers also provides great access to the neighborhood’s Pinery Country Club, with a scenic golf course, swimming, indoorand-outdoor tennis, and plenty of event space; with memberships available at very reasonable rates. And you’ll experience how very accessible The Timbers is to urban

All sixteen final home sites have mountain views, and homes are being oriented to make the most of them attractions, compared to other estate-sized home sites in Douglas and Elbert Counties. Right now, prices start from the low $2 millions; and time will quickly run out on those final sites. “Buyers need to be looking at the plans and sites now, particularly if they want to be taking occupancy next year,” Howarth notes. The Timbers at The Pinery delivers high-speed internet, natural gas lines, and city water and sewer services. To visit the community, head south on Parker Road, five miles past Parker’s downtown, continue past the country club to S. Pinery Pkwy, then turn east 2.5 miles. Or from I-25 take Castle Pines Pkwy east (becomes Hess) to Parker Road and turn south 3 miles to Pinery Pkwy South.

IF YOU’RE A RUNNER—and you race—or if you cheer on a road racer, you’ve probably heard the iconic voice of Creigh Kelley (pronounced “Cree”). He’s been announcing races around the country for more than 40 years including the Chicago Marathon, the Walt Disney World Marathon, many of the popular Rock ‘n’ Roll series events and, right here at home, the Colfax Marathon. In addition to being an announcer, Kelley has been a lifelong runner, competitor, race director, agent and, for more than 50 years, he’s been an inspiring leader in the running community both in Colorado and around the world.

Kelley How running saved his life By Jessica Hughes

He even credits his favorite sport with saving his life when stage 4 cancer knocked on his door in 2012. During chemo, he found himself constantly thinking: “When can I start running again?” Within two weeks of getting the cancerfree diagnosis, he was out running and describes it “as part of saving my life on a daily basis.” Running has been and still is his lifeline, both physically and mentally. It’s opened so many doors for his career and has aided in his physical and mental health. “Running can save your life,” Kelley says. He also acknowledges that as a runner, he can make an impact on others—their health and their lives. Kelley says, “One thing—as a runner—you must realize and accept is the burden that every time you step outside for a run, people are watching you. When you’re out there, people might just say, ‘I could do that if that person can do that.’ Your run might inspire others to do the same thing.” HOW IT ALL STARTED As a sophomore in high school in Connecticut, Kelley found himself running with the wrong crowd, but decided to go out for track with one of the “cool kids.” The coach told him: “You’re skinny, you can run the mile.” He did, and he made the team. He soon became one of the top five runners in the state in the two-mile race. “God winks,” says Kelley, which is how he describes the moment the track coach accepted him and changed the course of his life. Kelley continued running in college at the Virginia Military Institute, where he says he cried the entire first week of school. It was tough but it didn’t matter, he was there to run. That became his focus for the next four years. When he served in the Vietnam War in 1969, he stopped running and picked up smoking. After leaving the war and earning a graduate degree, he moved to Atlanta in the mid-70s. “God winked” again—right around the time society was getting the message it was unhealthy to smoke around a pregnant woman, his wife became pregnant. So, he traded in his cigarettes for a pair of running shoes, sold to him by none other than Olympian Jeff Galloway at Galloway’s local running store in Atlanta. Soon, Galloway was coaching him, and just like that his love affair with running was reignited. Kelley says his journey with

CREIGH’S TIPS FOR BEGINNING RUNNERS PICK THE RIGHT DOCTOR: one who understands the impacts of running. INVESTING IN A GOOD PAIR OF SHOES is key. COMMIT TO YOUR BODY IN MOTION for at least 30 minutes a day—even if it’s walking. Build from there. REEVALUATE YOUR DIET. Eat better foods that energize you.

PHOTO: CHAD CHISHOLM

FIND OTHERS IN YOUR COMMUNITY to run with. Motivation can be found in numbers. SCHEDULE YOUR RUN like it is the most important meeting of the day.

running is “the one common element that has allowed me to move forward in one direction.” Ultimately, that one direction pointed him toward Denver in 1978 to open a running store. He also helped start BKB Limited (a company that put on running events in Colorado and across the country) and became an agent for elite runners. About two years later, he began announcing for events all over the world including the Sydney Olympics in 2000. THE RACE GOES ON In 2021, Kelley received the MarathonFoto Road Race Management Lifetime Achievement Award for his notable contributions to the sport of long-distance road running. And with a resume like his, it’s easy to see why he won such an award. But out of all that he’s contributed to the sport, announcing has been the most fun for Kelley. He loves that he can share with the rest of the world the feelings runners have at the end of a race with his interviews and interactions with the runners. “Those were the things that built me up over the years,” Kelley says. And he’s proud to be able to help build up runners right here at home. Since its inception in 2006, Kelley has been an integral part of the Colfax Marathon and has served as the race director since 2008. Today, Kelley stays fit with a goal of running every other day; eating clean, healthy foods; and incorporating post-run stretches and light weights for building muscle. He says running along the Highline Canal is his favorite for long runs. It’s not his running stats that make him who he is—although an “accidental” 31-mile training run and an all-time PR of a 2:32 marathon time is no small feat—it’s the commitment and excitement he has for the sport and the industry. It’s what motivates him to stay the course. “Put your feet on the floor and go out the door,” Kelley says, “and start a journey to save your life!” 57

Escape to the Mountains Head to the high country for SUMMERTIME TREKKING By Jessica Hughes

This is an excellent way to enjoy the backcountry at its best, with rustic and cozy cabins equipped with beds, kitchens stocked with utensils, outdoor patios perfect for evening cocktails—and, of course, each one comes replete with spectacular Rocky Mountain views. But accessing these huts on your own for the first time can be overwhelming—requiring reservations and a lot of planning. So, if you are unfamiliar with this type of backcountry activity, companies like Paragon Guides, are here to help you make the most of your trip with no headaches.

Will Elliott, co-owner and lead guide at Paragon Guides, has been leading both summer and winter hut trips since 2008. The company offers both single-day and multiday excursions, with Elliott’s favorite and the company’s most popular trip being the Aspen to Vail. Another popular route, he says, is the 10th Mountain memorial hut to Uncle Bud’s hut, traversing part of the Colorado Trail and a climb to Homestake Peak. Paragon’s llama excursions also draw in big groups. “Llamas help carry all your stuff and are pleasant on the trail, making them great travel companions,” Elliott says.

around a single hut with mini day excursions as opposed to going hut to hut.

While the hut system was originally built for winter use, summer treks are becoming just as popular. Summer trips pose their own set of challenges and the biggest one is hydration. Many of the huts do not have running water, so you must carry it or filter it on the trail. Also, the trip itself can take longer—necessitating more water—because hiking is inherently slower than making the trek on skis. To combat this issue, many hikers choose treks that center

• Bring a water filter. A gravity-fed filter is one Elliott likes the best.

To help you plan your summer trip to the 10th Mountain Division huts, Elliott and the team at Paragon Guides offer a few tips to make your adventure one to remember: • Huts.org is a great place to start to get a comprehensive overview of the hut system. • Print a portable map, as your phone should not be used as a reliable navigation source. • Pack like you could spend the night outside.

• Work to be a better steward of the hut system. Be sure to do your homework before you go. • Hire a guide service, if you are unsure about trekking details. PARAGON GUIDES, paragonguides.com

WITH MORE THAN 350 MILES of trails, connecting 34 huts, a guided trekking adventure could be the perfect summertime getaway if you’re looking to test your hiking mettle. Named after an Army unit that trained for World War II in the Rocky Mountains, the 10th Mountain Division hut system— one of the largest mountain hut networks in the country—has become popular with backcountry skiers in the winter and hikers in the summer.
