THE COLORADO

HOME LIFE STYLE Our connection begins with home.

TALK OF THE TOWN

KNOW SOMEONE who should be featured in AvidLifestyle? Tell me about them at hillary@avidlifestyle.com.

CURATED COLLECTIONS PACKED WITH PERSONALITY FOR THOSE WHO KNOW ME, it’s no surprise that I’m a collector. Art, antiques, jewelry, shoes, clothes, handbags, even plants—they all tug at my soul and make me curious about their stories and how those stories play a role in my own life. I literally cannot pass up a vintage shop, gallery, or consignment shop without being drawn in to find treasures I just can’t live without. It’s that passion that has me tickled to share this issue with you. We talked with local experts about heirloom antiques and vintage finds as well as cherished family china sets—we discuss how to style your home with these treasures even in modern spaces (pg. 27 and pg. 34). And ooh-la-la! We got a rare glimpse into the life (and closets) of the impeccably styled Florence Müller, Curator of Textile Arts & Fashion at the Denver Art Museum. Not only is she a very accomplished person, but she’s ethereal and otherworldly in her diaphanous gowns and charming smile (pg. 44). I like to think she would approve of the collection of family jewels featured on p. 42.

E X P E R IE NC E D , T R U S T E D ADVI SOR.

We were invited to experience Vehicle Vault’s collection of exquisite cars for our cover story, their vast anthology of autos is truly impressive. The museum evokes memories and offers a look into the future too. Our talented models were styled accordingly with each car to immerse you in the culture and the era of the autos (pg.56). Patrick Dempsey knows a thing or two about fast cars. The actor turned race car driver opens up about his perspective for achieving excellence (pg. 64). Another person with a passion for perfection is Cherry Hills designer Julie Judnt. Her repurposed handbags are coveted artistic gems that fashionistas fawn over (pg. 70). If you’re like most Coloradans who play sports 365 days of the year, you’ll want to ‘dink’ your way into Pickleball mania. Check out the Rocky Mountain Pickleball Championships at Gates Tennis Center this month to see why this has become one of the country's fastest growing sports (pg. 74).

Finally, if your idea of heaven is traveling the globe for one-of-a-kind treasures, you’ll be booking your European tour after your read about Djuna’s yearly buying trips—it’s basically my ideal vacation! (pg. 78). I hope you enjoy this collector’s issue as much I do. For me, it’s these personal touches that help define us and tell our stories for years to come. Here's to making sure your story is uniquely yours. With Gratitude,

SPOTLIGHT ON TEDDY ROBB PERFECTING HIS craft in Rocky Mountain ski lodges and Nashville’s honky-tonks, country singer Teddy Robb has a laid-back voice that grabs you like the Colorado winter air and invites you to cozy up to a warm fire. A native of Akron, Ohio, Robb grew up loving the outdoors. He fished, hiked, and played football through college in Ohio, however his passion turned to music the moment he heard George Strait’s “Troubadour.” That was it, the decision was made. He called his parents, packed his bags and hit the road. Robb spent time in Colorado playing music to support his snowboarding habit before making the final move to Nashville. He was signed to Monument Records in 2018.

SAVING FOOD・PROTECTING THE PLANET・FEEDING PEOPLE

Robb’s debut single, “Really Shouldn’t Drink Around You,” written by multi-GRAMMY® Award-winning songwriters Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne, along with chart-topping songwriter and Old Dominion band member Trevor Rosen, has over 50 million worldwide streams to date and shipped to country radio last year. Robb performed the song to a national audience on NBC’s TODAY Show and his music has been written about in the pages of Rolling Stone, Billboard and more. In April 2020 Robb released his self-titled, debut EP. The five-song project includes “Really Shouldn’t Drink Around You,” as well as the previously released tracks “Lead Me On” and “Tell Me How,” which have collectively been streamed over 80 million times. New tracks on the EP include “Me On You” and “Good Love & Good Whisky.” The project was produced by Shane McAnally, Ben Fowler, and Matt McGinn.

Although you might think Robb is just another cute country guy with catchy songs, he’s extremely passionate about supporting his community and giving back any way he can. For example, his “America is Heaven on Dirt” camo fleece blanket benefits the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ Unmet Needs Program, available at vfw.org. On August 28th, Robb will be in town to help kick off the inaugural Wheels of Dreams event at the Vehicle Vault. Grab your tickets at coloradoavidgolfer.com/events/wheels-ofdreams and enjoy an evening of country music, luxury lounges and, of course, vintage and inspiration cars. Plus, proceeds of the event will benefit National Jewish and Bags of Fun.

THE REST IS HISTORY

// how it all started

PHOTO: COURTESY UNIVERSITY OF DENVER

A Page In Time A look at University of Denver’s SPECIAL COLLECTION OF RARE BOOKS AND MANUSCRIPTS By Maren Bartels THE ARCHIVE OF HISTORY at the University of Denver runs deep. It houses thousands of rare and unique materials that have received “substantial and sustained attention within the University or related to the local community, those representing ongoing departmental research interests, or those areas that are the focus of interdisciplinary programs. DU’s official U.S. depository dates back to 1909, however many of the nearly 900,000 documents found in the collection are from well before then. Historically the library had selected over 70% of available depository materials, meaning they have a rich legacy collection. Strengths of their depository collection include commerce and transportation (Interstate Commerce Commission), foreign relations, congressional hearings and reports, and historical executive agency documents. Katherine Crowe is the Curator of Special Collections and Archives at DU and has the responsibility of overseeing this vast historical knowledge. “It’s a big undertaking but collecting and having access to these references is part of our Colorado legacy as well as the University’s.” Because DU basically grew up as Denver did, many of the archives are rich with details like the Barry Matchett History Collection in the University Archives. As a young man growing up in the DU area, he captured oral history of early Denverites, including the Cutler family.

Dr. Ira Cutler was a botanist and one of the first DU professors. Matchett spoke with Cutler’s daughters Majorie and Marion about the origin of DU’s “Denver Rose (Austrian Copper),” a flower which blooms throughout campus in early June around commencement. Ira named it “the Denver Rose” because Henry Butchel, an early DU chancellor and Governor of Colorado, had a cutting of the rose and gave it to Cutler to study. He cultivated the rose and planted in the Observatory Park neighborhood and on campus to pay homage to Butchel. It’s still planted west of the Anderson Academic Commons by the fountain. One collection that gets a lot of attention; the Cookery and Foodways Collection. “Community groups ask to come see specific collections, and our cookbook collection is always popular,” according to Crowe. The collection includes the Katie Stapleton papers featuring her local radio talk-show Cooking with Katie. What’s also impressive is that professors use the cookery collection as a teaching tool. “For example, there’s a Food and Culture Seminar where students use the cookbooks in thematic categories like food and war, food and gender, food in midcentury America, the commercialization of baby formula—it’s fascinating.” Another noteworthy archival collection is the Beck Archives which reflect the rich, varied and vibrant Jewish experience in Colorado. It serves 24

august 2021 // AvidLifestyle

as a repository of the heritage of Jewish culture and history of the Rocky Mountain region, such as the pioneering Jewish women of Colorado who have made numerous contributions to the development of Colorado from its territorial days to the present through philanthropy and social activism. Their archive collections go on and on and are filled with captivating history. It’s a literal time machine with depth and brevity that will take you on a historical rabbit hole. In a time when we’re so focused on the future, the archive of history at the University of Denver offers a chance to reminisce, discover and learn from those who have come before us. library.du.edu/collections-archives

WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR FAMILY’S FINE CHINA By Kimberly Lord Stewart THE RULES are clear. Never talk about religion or politics at family gatherings. But what about who will take Grandma’s or Mom’s precious heirloom china? As you pass around the Thanksgiving side dishes this coming year, take a closer look at the delicate gravy bowl and covered casserole dish of green beans. Think about the memories those dishes hold. Will you cherish or perish at the thought of inheriting your family’s china? You aren’t alone if the subject makes you squirm. I’ve never heard from so many people about their guilt, remorse and joy about such a divisive family topic. As our parents age and generations leave us, there are many mixed emotions that accompany the experience. Lives well lived and all the belongings that go with the people we love hold a welter of memories. My sisters and I recently went through the heartwrenching task of helping our mother go through her belongings when downsizing to a smaller home. As diplomats in Germany, she and my father entertained heads of state, where choosing the right place setting for a dinner party was an important part of projecting the

right image. For our mom, that meant handpainted and gilded Herend Rothschild china from Herrendorf, Hungary. For centuries, it has been known for being the fine porcelain of choice for European aristocracy, including Queen Victoria and Lady Diana of Great Britain. In my decidedly un-royal family, however, my mother watched the dollar-exchange rate carefully so she could buy a new piece of china every month or so. As my sisters and I carefully wrapped and boxed up each piece, it brought back memories. In between cushioning each ceramic-roselidded top and finely crafted cup handle with squeaky bubble wrap, we recalled our childhood home filled with women dressed in flowing chiffon designer gowns and men in sharply pressed formal military uniforms with rows of official-looking medals pinned across their chest pockets. At the time, I was old enough to know that any small talk, while they sipped after-dinner coffee from gold-rimmed cups and cordials from cut crystal stemware, was a carefully planned ploy to uncover a secret or two from the guests representing the other side of the Cold War. Fragile and elaborately painted dishes seem out of place today in a society that has shifted

to more casual get-togethers. While writing this story, many people told me they took their family china home without argument when a parent downsized or died, but then reluctantly gave it away because the pattern didn’t fit their style, they didn’t have places to display it or they just got tired of carting it around move-after-move. Even so, the decision was not made lightly. “I gave some of my favorite pieces to friends,” says Sarah Asmus, from Fort Collins. She inherited multiple Japanese china sets that her father bought while serving in the Korean War. “I gave a favorite tea set with a Mount Fuji pattern to a friend from Colombia,” says Asmus. She loved the pattern because it was not from her home culture. “I love that they use it all the time and serve me tea from it when I visit,” she says. “I am happy it went to people who appreciate it. It felt good to give it to a new home.” Still others told me they could not deal with the guilt of getting rid of it. One friend said she didn’t have the courage to tell her mother that she didn’t want the family china. It’s now secretly packed away in her teenage daughter’s cedar chest waiting for the decision to be made when members of the next generation leave the nest and set up their own home. Conversely, another woman told me she uses her family china for special occasions and buys new pieces as she finds them. She recently thought about using it all the time. Personally, I like that attitude. Why not? What are we all waiting for? Denver cookbook author Lee Clayton Roper says she inherited her great-grandmother’s pink and white Haviland china. She is proud that it has been passed down from mother to daughter for four generations. I understand how she feels. I am grateful that my daughterin-law recently accepted two Kaiser porcelain German tea sets that I purchased decades ago while living in Europe. She even set out the pink rose cups, saucers and pots for a Valentine’s Day tea for my four grandchildren, all under the age of 6. I love the thought of their little hands learning to pour their favorite raspberry hibiscus tea into the thin porcelain cups. Glenn Ashton, in Longmont, loves that his teenage and college-age daughters use his grandmother Nonnie’s blue, white and silverrimmed Glencoe Noritake china for tea parties. “It mostly sits around. Would I get rid of it? No.

Is it serving an immensely important purpose? No,” he says. “We’re actually looking at replacing our everyday dishes; we are considering getting porcelain china to replace our worn and chipped stoneware.” Holly Arnold Kinney, owner of the Fort Restaurant in Morrison, inherited china from both her mother’s and father’s sides of the family. “I use them for tea, special lunches, and holiday dinners,” says Arnold Kinney. Her mother’s china included navy-and-goldpatterned Limoges with hand-painted fish. From her father’s side, she inherited an elaborate gold-painted Heinrich & Co, from Bavaria. As with many heirlooms, it has a great story. The latter set was given to Arnold Kinney’s aunt by her grandmother in 1931 as a wedding gift. “My Aunt Helen thought they were too fancy and sent them back to my grandmother, which of course insulted her. But I luckily inherited them,” she says gratefully. A treasured teacup and hand-painted cookie plate may seem like something of days gone by. But as Asmus says, “I remember using my grandmother’s china on holidays as a child. It holds so many memories.” Before you discount your grandmother’s fancy china, think about the memories and stories they hold for you and future generations.

DENVER’S BLOOMTV NETWORK Blossoms with Launch in August When Monica Michelle founded Sweet Fleurs, a vegan, edible flower bakery in Denver, little did she know it would lead to a newly launched streaming television network. At the end of July, the bakery ceased to operate, but the world will have an opportunity to learn and experience the magical beauty and healing properties of flowers with the launch of the streaming BloomTV Network in August. Viewers will learn from experts about how to live life more abundantly and healthfully with flowers. BloomTV will include streaming videos, classes and online content on flower growing and arranging, cooking with flowers and medicinal health properties of flowers from leading experts. “The network will focus on conservation, education, entertainment and community around flowers,” Michelle explains. The concept for the BloomTV streaming service came out of the pandemic. With mandated shelter-in-place orders, the only safe place for people to be was outdoors. As a result, interest in nature and flowers literally grew. After launching Sweet Fleur bakery,

Michelle began to research the health benefits of flowers. “I found that even having cut flowers in your home were proven to lower stress and anxiety, while also connecting and grounding you. From there, I was down the rabbit hole of flowers,” she says. What she could not find was a single source, a big bouquet of sorts, with information on the benefits of flowers. “I also found that there was a huge lack of entertainment or educational videos around flowers, and what was out there was very outdated. I decided to create BloomTV as a one-stop-shop for anything flower related,” says Michelle. As the founder, Michelle wants to bring the beauty of nature and flowers to the world. “I truly believe that my purpose in this life is to bring beauty to the planet. The ultimate goal is to restore Eden to her natural, most beautiful state,” she says. “For me, flowers are the gateway to beauty, so by bringing more awareness to the many medicinal properties, mental-health benefits and aesthetics that flowers bring to our lives, my hope is to restore beauty in the lives of people and the planet.” For more go to: bloomtvnetwork.com.

Aside from being a unique piece of furniture, antiques also have a sustainability component that resonates with a lot of people. Since these pieces have already been produced and are still in use, they have a much smaller carbon footprint than brand-new furniture and were made to last, adding to their sustainable stature.

PHOTO: JESSICA KINSINGTON

SO MANY PEOPLE have antique furniture passed down to them and have no idea how to incorporate these pieces into their homes. The items end up collecting dust in the garage or in the basement without a second thought. But with the resurgence of traditional design has come a renewed interest in antique furniture and heirloom collectibles. They add story and character to your home, plus give you something unique that you can’t just go out and buy from any old store.

PHOTO: AMANDA PROUDFIT PHOTOGRAPHY

For reference, antiques are generally defined as objects that are at least 100 years old. Meanwhile, anything more than 20 years old is considered vintage. But decorating and designing your home with antique and vintage pieces is all about adding storied furniture and objects, as well as blending old-world design with the new and modern. These are the pieces that define your personality and tell your story for years to come.

Grandmillennial Collections

Classic, not trend-based, is what this design is all about – taking traditional designs and updating them for today’s modern home. Whether it’s a collection of Vaseline ware, formal china, milk glass, brass tea boxes, silver cigarette boxes, hand-engraved vases, the key to achieving a cohesive grandmillennial look is to root it in traditionalism. Yes, you can incorporate pieces from all different eras, but be intentional about what you choose. The idea is to get a sense of who you are. What do you enjoy, what makes you happy, where have you traveled, what have you (or you family) collected? These collections or groupings should blend together to create an elegant, timeless home full of memories. Now the real kicker is to add something unexpected by bringing in a modern twist is what takes this look from outdated hand-me-downs to traditional and chic.

Think needlepoint pillows with modern block lettering or current scenes, or an abstract monochromatic painting next to a display of depression glass. Pattern Play

What else belongs in an update of the past? Patterns, and the more you incorporate, the better! Mixing patterns, when done tastefully, adds instant sophisticated elegance to a room. Try to find patterns that use the same color, a shared design element, or combine one pattern that’s modern and simple with one that’s more flouncy and detailed. Start with pillows and wallpaper—or even stick-on wallpaper—and let the patterns flow. Check out the vast selections of timeless wallpapers at Hygge & West, and the jewel-box of treasures at Djuna. Layers of Personality

Layering in traditional pieces, especially wellloved ones, lets you highlight your personality. It defnitely takes an artful eye and the right placement of things to accomplish the look. Too much of a good thing can translate into clutter so choose wisely. For example, if you’re more of a minimalist, choose accent pieces that juxtapose the space and add warmth. Or display vintage Zippo lighters in an acrylic

box for a pop of the unexpected. By layering multiple styles together, you create a mix that feels unique, where you almost lose track of what’s new and what’s not. This helps create a look of a home that’s collected over time, versus something cookie-cutter that anyone and everyone can buy. Antique Accents

Antiques don’t always have to be statement pieces. Sometimes incorporating antique furniture as a subtle accent is just the thing. For example, using an antique trunk as a side table or coffee table grounds the space while also providing storage. Pair it with a lighter colored sofa to highlight the wood and worn leather. You can also incorporate natural textiles like jute rugs and woven lamp shades to complement the weathered trunk. Check out Patina Antiques and Home for their collection of antique and vintage trunks and curated finds. Patina Antiques and Home Greenwood Village, 303.795.0816 patina-antiques-home.edan.io

Contrasting Old and New

It’s one thing to mix antiques with more traditional-style furniture. It’s another move entirely to mix antiques with ultra-modern lines. For example, pairing lucite chairs with a Victorian-style dining table creates an interesting, unexpected comparison.

PHOTOS: STUDIO M DENVER VIA INSTAGRAM

Also, when it comes to antique furniture, you don’t have to limit yourself to just one piece. In fact, there’s something quite charming and eclectic about mixing antiques from different styles and eras. A simple way to create a relaxed space that’s still sophisticated is to take a vintage chair or sofa and reupholster it in a vibrant modern print. As long as the piece has good bones, reinvent it into something that brings you joy. Boris Upholstery has a vast selection of fabrics for all types of furniture, and Molly Reinhardt of Studio M Denver repurposes designer fabrics and samples from the designtrade industry to create luxury pillows, soft goods and custom pieces. Her shop is bursting with creativity—colors, patterns, textures— and Reinhardt’s cheerful personality, making Studio M a haven for design. AN HEIRLOOM IS defined as “an object that belonged to a family for several generations with sentimental and/or monetery value.” The merit of these pieces come from the memories of beloved family members and are considered “the crown jewels” of most family legacies. Our own Hillary Locke Mujica shares some of her personal collection, complete with three generations of charm bracelets, an Add-APearl necklace and a vintage Emerald ring from local consignment shop, La Cache. Hermann Brunn injected new style into the frumpy coachwork offered by Lincoln after the motor company was acquisitioned by Ford in 1922. The original design featured more headroom than style as it was overseen by the milliner son-in-law of Lincoln Motor Company founder Henry Leland. With Brunn’s help the car’s style got an upgrade while still capitalizing on Leland’s superb chassis and fork-and-blade V-8 engine to make the Lincoln Model L one of the best automobiles of the 1920s. This 1925 Lincoln Model L Dual Windshield Phaeton is a superb example of their collaboration, with a long, low hood that takes advantage of the V-8’s compact dimensions, a raked windshield with generous wind wings, a three-piece rear seat windshield, jump seats and a luggage trunk behind the tonneau.

In the Driver’s Seat By Hillary Locke Mujica

THE ALLURE OF the automobile is something ingrained in American culture. From the time we can walk, it seems we’re destined to drool over the rarest, newest, most innovative cars, let alone get a chance to actually drive one of these works of art. If your heart goes pitterpatter at the sound of a revved-up roadie, then the Vehicle Vault is your playground. Born from a passion for everything car-related, the Vehicle Vault is a locally owned business that houses a collection of cars that are loved and lusted over. Quickly recognizing the historical significance of these beautiful pieces of functional art, owner Erin Hutchison decided to create a community gathering place for all auto enthusiasts, even those who may not realize they are yet. The desire to share not only her own collection, but the history in engineering and design of the automobile, led to the construction of the stunning 30,000-square-foot facility in Parker. Deeply rooted in the communities of Parker and car enthusiasts, Vehicle Vault is thrilled to welcome guests to experience the beauty of over a century of automotive history. Whether visiting the museum, attending a private event, or joining in the fun at monthly outdoor gatherings, Hutchinson hopes each guest will walk away with an outstanding experience and appreciation for beautiful cars. From early touring cars to muscle cars and innovative race cars, this collection has something to get everyone’s motor running.

The French

Connection By Kathryn O’Shea Evans

Five years ago, Florence Müller, a Paris-born curator and former fashion journalist, hopped the pond from France to the Front Range to become the Denver Art Museum’s Avenir Foundation Curator of Textile Art and Fashion. Here, the Colorado transplant flings open her closet to show us her megawatt collection of haute couture—and reveals everything from her go-to vintage shop to her favorite restaurants in town. PLUS: Müller shares the music playlist from her recent exhibition at DAM, “Paris to Hollywood, the Fashion and Influence of Véronique and Gregory Peck” to add to your Spotify. Oui oui!

Denver is quite a change from Paris. Are you a mountain person? Yes! Yes. I love hiking, I love skiing, all these things and this connection with nature. That is really something that you miss in Paris, because it’s a city without many trees and nature. It’s a very different life, of course, but it’s what I was looking for—an adventure! Love that. Welcome. How did you get into fashion? I was a student in history of art at the Louvre, also doing theater costumes and fashion photography. I was looking around to find something that was connected with how garments can transform themselves and can really redefine somebody. It is a form of art. I started to work with the lady who is considered the founder of the fashion museum in Paris, in the Louvre. When she passed away from cancer, I was very young still, but became the curator of the museum. I stayed there until the mid ’90s and I did many, many exhibitions. Then I became an independent curator and started to teach fashion at the French Institute of Fashion, which is the most prestigious school in Paris. Wow. That’s quite a résumé! I’m known for retrospectives—I think I have done about 18 exhibitions on Dior, and many big retrospectives around the world in Russia, China, Japan, France, England and Israel as well. Perhaps I am seen in the fashion world as a specialist of the history of fashion, from the 19th century to today, and more specifically, a historian of designers and couture. This is amazing. I am so proud that we have you here in Denver. Are you appalled by the way we dress here? I think the way people are dressed here is very much in tune with this outdoor lifestyle. When you walk in some districts, like LoHi, LoDo, Cherry Creek, Larimer ... you can really find a lot of fashionistas. Denver is a gigantic city but there are very fashionable districts where you can really shop very, very interesting fashions, for both women and men. What do you look for when you’re curating a museum exhibition?

PHOTOS: CHAD CHISHOLM

I’m inspired by contemporary fashion. I follow all the shows and have for more than 30 years. Street style also is a huge inspiration. I like to find subjects that are connected with the mood in which we are. My recent exhibition on Gregory Peck [for the Denver Art Museum] resonated very well with the fact that the pandemic is not over totally, but we are able to go outside, to go to restaurants, to enjoy life. The exhibition is very enjoyable and really fits with this moment.

How do you begin the process of curating an exhibition like that? When I have a final subject [approved by the Director of the museum], I dream about it a little bit. I start to write a story—basically, what I want to tell about the subject, what is important, and what will touch people. Then I start to work on a checklist for everything that will be exhibited: all the ensembles, including the accessories, the photos, the videos. Usually, the first checklist is very large and it’s very difficult to reduce it, because you want to keep everything—everything is desirable! I keep things that tell one moment in history... and some objects because they are beautiful and very artistic. The research takes several months; very often I ask for the help of the couturier and design companies when they have archives and I’m able to find the origin of the pieces. What is the “secret sauce” to a great fashion exhibition?

PHOTOS: CHAD CHISHOLM; HAIRSTYLIST: VALERIE WARD; MAKEUP ARTIST: ERROLL PERKINS

The set design. I like to work with architects because they have a great sense of the space. The other big, big thing is the lighting—it’s half of the success of the beauty of an exhibition, especially for fashion evolution. Dresses aren’t easy to light because they are 3-D objects. Sometimes if you light the front, you miss the back, that kind of thing. And of course, music is important because it can give the feeling of the decade in which the piece belongs, then it helps people to remember, “Oh, okay, this is the ’70s.” I want to hear about your own collection of couture. What are your favorite pieces? Oh my God, I have too many! I love Balenciaga. I am buying a lot of Demna Gvasalia, the current artistic designer of Balenciaga. I love Celine as well. Back in the ’80s and ’90s, I bought a lot of Jean Paul Gaultier, Thierry Mugler, and Marc Jacobs. It’s difficult because there’s so many!

Your own Beautiful Habitat...

Live in color, style, and comfort with design that effortlessly harmonizes how you live with what you love. beautifulhabitat.com | 303 323 4683

Do you ever do vintage shopping? Since moving to Denver, I love to shop vintage because there are many antique malls here. Every month I do a tour of the vintage mall and boutiques and find some treasures. The Brass Armadillo is my favorite—I’m not sure if it’s politically correct, but I found great vintage fur from the ‘70s. I have a beautiful Red Sox jacket that I bought this winter that I love so much, and a long white mink coat from the ’70s. Unbelievable. Since you lived in Paris for so long, I’m dying to know—which restaurants in town are your go-tos? There are many! I love Tavernetta and its owners, who are friends. And I love Atelier by Radex. Hillstone is one of my absolute favorites in Cherry Creek—their [hot fudge] sundae with the cream is crazy! I also love Temaki Den, a new restaurant that opened in The Source during the pandemic. It’s absolutely wonderful and there is a lot of space—you can get a reservation at the last minute. Another favorite: Cart-Driver, which has locations in LoHi and RiNo. They have the best pizza—I would say they can compete with any pizzeria in Italy. It’s very sophisticated and simple, and the places are beautiful, and full of beautiful people.

Eyewear Ambassador By Chad Chisholm

PATRICK DEMPSEY is a man of many talents: actor, race car driver, athlete, and director. And to that impressive arsenal of genius, he can now add fashion accessory ambassador. Porsche Design Eyewear has teamed with Dempsey, whose passion for perfection in all aspects of life is reflected in a Collector’s Edition of a model inspired by the classic P’8478 sunglasses.

the various lenses gave way to a new breed of eyewear. Ultralight titanium creates the frames of these new glasses, from UV400 protection to polarization to contrast-enhancing lenses available for the squared aviator frames. 2021 ushers in the P’8928 with a sleek modern design that’s as suave and as versatile as the actor and motorsports enthusiast is. The high-level design allows the wearer to change lenses, whatever the lifestyle. “It’s as quick as a pit stop,” jokes Dempsey. The adaptability allows for how you see the light and what suits the need, utilizing the Porsche Design innovative VISION DRIVE™ lens technology. “I love the engineering,” adds Dempsey. Approaching his ambassadorship as he does his personal and professional life, Dempsey explains the pillars of his method: teamwork, vision, goals, and how to achieve those goals. “When you’re around people who have achieved great things, there is a stillness in them, there is a humility, and there is a quiet light that just burns bright,” Dempsey reflects. “I think that is what greatness is. There is a humility, there’s a quiet confidence and there’s this really deep fire that’s in there and they know what they do. I think through motorsport and through my experience with Porsche I’ve been exposed to a lot of true champions—not only in their chosen sports or professions, but who they are as human beings and how they give back to society.” The titanium frames are nickel and chromefree, and are suited for everything from motorsports to daily life. The luxury eyewear pieces often become heirlooms, owing to their timeless design—as relevant today as they were during their ’70s inception. The P’8928 P Collector’s Edition glasses are available in dark grey and black as a tribute to Dempsey’s Hollywood style; the “P” color code after the number stands for Patrick. Art for Art’s Sake A LOCAL ARTIST CREATES JUST FOR HERSELF, AT LEAST FOR NOW By Heather Shoning WHEN JULIE JUNDT was a child, she spent hours and hours drawing but never felt she had talents like her mother and brother. Ultimately, she gave up creativity for hustle when she became a real-estate agent at age 21. Jundt spent nearly 20 years hot-footing through her career. It wasn’t until she quit working that she found her true creativity. About two years ago, while taking her son to his piano lesson, she spotted a used guitar for sale with a Fender strap and thought, “I want that strap on my purse.” She bought the guitar and quickly learned that putting that strap on her purse wasn’t quite as simple as she imagined. But it was the impetus to a path of learning, creating and, ultimately, figuring out how to create things she could see in her head but had no clue how to make manifest. “With the strap, it was like, ‘OK, well, now how do I attach this?’” she says. “So, I set out to figure out the right fasteners.” That turned into learning how to rivet, then grommet. 70

“Then I tried to sew leather, which went so horribly wrong,” she laughs. But it didn’t take her long to figure it out, and as she learned, she homed in on her specific work. Jundt turns used luxury handbags into one-of-a-kind art bags. “I stand in my garage all day and tear things apart and make new ones,” she says, highly oversimplifying the complexity of her art. Jundt spends hours studying the construction and details—even the ergonomics—of vintage bags as well as today’s designer bags. She then applies these findings to create patterns for her bags in new and unique designs and proportions. She’s committed to using 100 percent authentic designer bags and has trusted online sources to purchase them. “When I get these bags, they are—by all accounts—junk,” she says. “It’s not like I’m destroying a perfectly good handbag. I’m making something beautiful and authentic out of something that’s already had a whole other life.” Her favorite things inspire her best designs— she likes to embody something she loves without saying it. For instance, she loves the Kentucky Derby, so she asked herself, “If this bag were going to ‘be’ the Run for the Roses, what would it look like?” And then she lets her imagination and talent take over. “Deep down, I know—I keep learning and getting better; the finished product gets better and better—subconsciously that these bags are special,” she says. Because her work is so creative and unique, Jundt faces questions all the time: Why don’t you sell these? Why don’t you have a store? How much do your bags cost? For now, her response is: “I just want to make art. I don’t know these answers to the questions.” She thinks she might pursue an art exhibit at some point, but for now, she’s content just to build her inventory and continue along this creative path. “It’s not a business for me right now,” she says, “It’s art. It took me a long time to realize I’m an artist.”

We’re Just ‘Pickled Dink’ to Play Why we’re so manic for PICKLEBALL and how you can GET IN ON THE ACTION By Hillary Locke Mujica ACCORDING TO the Sport and Fitness Industry Association (SFIA), pickleball participation grew by a whopping 21.3% last year as Americans looked for new ways to stay active during the pandemic. That figure is part of a five-year trend that has seen pickleball evolve from its origins as a backyard knockabout game to a sport with Olympic aspirations.

THE 2021 ROCKY MOUNTAIN CHAMPIONSHIPS in its tournament series and the 2021 Pro Pickleball Association (PPA) Pro Tour will be held at Gates Tennis Center August 10th – 15th. Events for this exciting tournament include pro and amateur skill levels. Some of the best men and women players in the world will be competing for the $50,000 pro prize purse. All levels are welcome to compete, spectate and be a part of this exciting tournament. If you’re not up for competing, Leonard says, “spectators can expect to experience top-level pickleball by the best players in the world. This is not some random tournament played by Rufus and Dufus, this is the best pickleball in the world being played in Colorado. The top three men’s players in the world and the top four women’s players will be here including Ben Johns and Simone Jardim who are known to hit the ball 70 miles an hour from 14 feet away —it’s truly impressive.” GATES TENNIS CENTER 3300 East Bayaud Avenue, Denver 303.355.4461

It’s hard to believe but this year is the 56th anniversary of pickleball. It was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, by three enterprising dads—US Congressman Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum. Their children were bored with their usual summertime activities so they grabbed whatever they could find in the garage to create a mash-up of tennis, badminton and Ping-Pong. At first they used the standard 60 inch-high badminton net but later found that the ball bounced better on asphalt and lowered the net. In the early years, no official name was assigned to the game but according to the Pritchard family, the game was named after a “pickle boat” where the crew is picked from among leftovers—like the left-over equipment they were using. They also had a dog named Pickles who liked to chase after the plastic ball, but the dog was named after the game, not the other way around. A decade later, the game evolved from the hodgepodge of equipment and simple rules into a popular sport throughout North America and is now taking off in other parts of the world. Colorado is seeing a huge demand from “pickleheads” of all ages for more courts, clinics and clubs throughout the entire state. In fact, USA Pickleball estimates that there are roughly 3.5 million players across the nation, and of that total, about 56 percent are 35 years of age or older. Many schools’ physical education programs have even incorporated it into their curriculums so it’s truly everyman’s sport.

“Pickleball is the perfect mix of accessibility and fun. It is easier to pick up than tennis, and just as competitive. It’s a game where people of all ages can play as lightheartedly or as competitively as they’d like to,” states Gates Tennis Center PPR® Certified Coach Robert Leanard. “Competing in tennis is more physically challenging—you’re on a bigger court and hitting with more force—but I’d say (doubles) pickleball is more mentally challenging. There are so many subtle strategies and mind games that the longer rallies and non-volley zone provide.”

HOW TO PLAY

● YOU’LL NEED paddles, balls, a court and three friends. Game-Set-Match, Inc. (denvertennis.net) can get you geared up with

locations in Denver, Boulder, Centennial, Littleton and select tennis club locations.

● GET TO the Non-Volley Zone, and learn the 3rd shot drop!

● TO PLAY, two teams (typically two people each) send the ball back and forth on a small court, separated by a low net. The serving team can score points, not the other side. The first side to score 11 points by a margin of at least two wins.

● LEARN HOW to dink! This short shot can force opponents to hit a weak shot back or to miss the ball altogether.

● SERVES MUST BE diagonal and underhand, the ball needs to bounce on each side before a volley and players can’t hit when standing in a close-to-the-net area known as “the Kitchen.”

“Pickleball will only keep growing. It’s accessible, fun, competitive, and space efficient enough to keep growing and attracting more players,” according to Leanard. “It certainly won’t replace tennis or paddle tennis, as they’re different games with different appeals. Lots of young people are flocking to the game, which will help guarantee its long-term success.”

● KNOW THAT “the Kitchen” is actually the Non-Volley Zone, and the only rule is no volleying in the Non-Volley Zone.

● HAVE FUN, laugh lots and keep a positive mental attitude!

Intrepid Travel With Djuna Exploring the World’s Cultures,

Cuisines and Timeless Art

By Hillary Locke Mujica WALK INTO DJUNA and you will feel as if you’ve been swept away to another land, surrounded by unique treasures from around the world. Located in the heart of Denver’s Antique Row, the one-of-kind pieces that cover the 7,000 square-foot store, are all hand-picked by the husband-and-wife team, Jeffery and Karen Moore, who have owned and operated the shop for 25 years. “Each piece we source has a story, and we get to share those stories which brings us so much joy,” shares Karen Moore, who in her previous life, owned a folk and a contemporary art gallery. “These global buying trips allow us to curate such rare, one-of-a-kind pieces that instantly personalize your home.” Over the years, close friends and clients (who have become friends) begged the Moores to take them along on their buying trips, and about ten years ago, that’s just what they did. They invited twelve guests to go “behind the curtain” to shop for collectible brocante throughout France, Mexico and Argentina. With the Moores’ expert eyes and key relationships with dealers at local antiques fairs, their guests find treasures to fill their homes and their souls. 78

Every year, the group visits three Antique Fairs—L’Isle sur la Sorgue, Montpellier and Avignon and explores towns such as Gordes, Roussillon and Menerbes; enjoys wine tastings, including a favorite at the famed Chateauneufdu-Pape and are hosted at the picturesque Chateau Talaud, a 17th-century chateau, owned for 22 years by some friends of the Moores. “These trips appear to be about buying only, but that’s not the case. They’re about experiencing local cultures and cuisines, being together with a small group of friends who all share the same passions and the pure joy of traveling. The shopping is just the cherry on top,” shares Karen. “We have guests that come back year after year. Mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, interior designers, girlfriends— they all come back each year because it’s the type of trip they could never arrange on their own. It’s truly a unique experience.” And it’s the quarter-century of relationships that allow the Moores access to these brocanteurs, wineries, the Chȃteau where they stay in Provence, galleries and more. Djuna has a trusted coordinator who handles all the interactions of each purchase and ships everything together in bulk back to Denver. “We’ve got it down to a science for the most part and it’s a huge benefit of going on a buying trip with us. If you find an antique spiral staircase you just must have, we can get it home for you. The level of customer care our team has is remarkable.”

Jeffery and Karen Moore, owners of Djuna

Although all trips were canceled in 2020 and are still halted this year, the Moores are making up for lost time with at least two backto-back trips to France in April 2022. “People are begging to go, so we’re going to offer multiple trips to fit everyone in.” As for their Mexico and Argentina trips, those are on hold for the moment but the art in those regions has them craving more trips for the near future. And the Moores are also planning on adding Morocco to their passports soon. The name Djuna was inspired by the eccentric American writer, artist, and illustrator Djuna Barnes, and the unique “Djuna look” is as colorful and eclectic as she was. According to Karen, “your home should tell a story, and the way to do that is to curate personal 80
