SEE YOU IN SEPTEMBER SEPTEMBER BRINGS back memories of back to school, a new commitment to work, fall foliage and gives a nod to the upcoming holidays. In my New York City days, September also meant the excitement and buzz of New York Fashion Week where I produced trend composites for designers and lifestyle and beauty brands. Although I miss the excitement of each show—being front of house with celebs and backstage with stylists—I’m happy to say those days are behind me. Working 16-hour days for two weeks, running around the entire city, fighting for interviews, editing video content and pitching stories to media outlets without time to eat or even sit for that matter. It was an annual endurance test that was a rite of passage for a young media maven in training. But with 9 years to recover from the mayhem, I can focus on the thrill of it all. I still get excited with the thought of suede boots, cashmere sweaters and jewel-tone makeup, hobknobbing with the likes of Fern Mallis (aka the Godmother of Fashion) and late-night dinners and drinks in the West Village with designers, models—those glittering moments of pure NYC magic. Today, we take in some fall trends at Park Meadows Retail Resort. With the temps still high, these pieces can transition from summer to fall and even early winter. And after 25 years of retail therapy, Park Meadows has become the cornerstone of the south suburb community. We spoke with GM Pam Kelly about the impact of Park Meadows yesterday, today and tomorrow.

With the change of season, it’s also time to look at skincare routines to combat dryness and extend that summer glow. And to welcome those autumn vibes, we’ll talk with experts on how to spruce up your entryway and accessorize your home. Plus, we look at how we live today and how those habits impact kitchen design trends. Also, we chatted with famed Chef Alex Seidel about his favorite fall foods and recipes, and even savored some fall farmer’s market harvests.

Indian Summer also offers warm days and cooler nights so it’s the perfect time for a fall get-away. From Scottsdale to Snowmass, Taos to Palisade, you'll want to pack your bags right away. And although we bid adieu to summer with September, there’s so much to do this Fall. With a jam-packed calendar of events, as sung by The Happenings way back in the 1960s, Will I See You in September? I sure do hope so! With Gratitude,

It’s Market Time LOCAL FLAVORS
// fresh finds
SPOTLIGHT ON DELICIOUS, LOCAL TREATS FROM THE SOUTH PEARL STREET FARMERS’ MARKET By Dionne Roberts ALTHOUGH THE GROWING SEASON in Colorado may be brief, the summer and fall still debut highly anticipated, quality farmers market produce with the help of local farmers, ranchers, craft artisans and specialty food purveyors. The South Pearl Street Farmers’ Market, which runs for 28 weeks on Sundays from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. (starting on Mother’s Day until mid-November) is a carefully curated event that showcases 160 diverse vendors on the 1400 + 1500 blocks of Denver’s Platte Park. “It is such a beautiful neighborhood, historic district, filled with independent, locally owned businesses,” says Nicole Jarman, founder of HobNob Events who manages the South Pearl Street Farmers’ Market. “The vibe and the area itself are super cool. It’s two long blocks that focus on being about food and agriculture and what happens in your kitchen.” Jarman says that her number one priority and the question she repeatedly asks herself when selecting new vendors is: “Does this talk about food?” “We spend a lot of time thinking about flavor palates and how people work together and how it coordinates,” explains Jarman. “Bread, cheese, wine, olive oils and then thinking about horseradish next to beef and then next to the same similar acid flavor palate. We think a lot about how that flows and your purchases.” Outside of a pivotal focus on local agriculture, education and complimentary food pairings, Jarman strives to bring distinction to their offerings with a “two like vendor” maximum “so we don’t have a plethora of any one thing.” “Especially as you look at how organic versus conventional or grass-fed versus grain-finished so you have a nice diversity and friendly competition,” says Jarman. “We want people to learn why they like one kind of steak over another one.” From the intentional foodie flow to the discernment of “what really is local?” South Pearl Street Farmers’ Market combines the quaintness of the adorable area with a thoughtful medley of specialty vendors, items and services. “Aside from being conscious of the collection vendors, we’ve tried really hard to create and cultivate a peaceful, good feeling place,” says Jarman. “We are a community in itself, even if it’s only for a few hours on a Sunday, and people can feel the good vibes.”

LOCAL FLAVORS
“The vibe and the area itself is super cool ... focus on being about food and agriculture and what happens in your kitchen.”
— Nicole Jarman
Jarman shares “Sunday’s with Nicole” with her picks for a pro walk-through at South Pearl: “Let me introduce you to the cool things!” REBEL BREAD — uses close to ancient grains, really tall unmodified wheat. “Beautiful bread and pastries made with incredible techniques.” ELA FAMILY FARMS — fruit and produce from Delta, Colorado. “Ela has been with the market since before my time, been with us since the beginning.” PAZ — on-site eats, take-away quesadillas and tamales.
YUMMY YUMMY HUMMUS — “The owner puts out the whole spread and he pulls out a cracker with avocado hummus and tabouleh and you just buy everything because it’s just so good. He is Lebanese and this is his family recipe that’s been passed down.” MINOUR FARMS — they grow Asian celery that is “super potent.” SNOW CREEK RANCH — “It’s a femaleowned, family-operated farm and their beef is incredible.” BROWN DOG FARMS — fresh eggs & greens. STYRIA CATERING — Smoked salmon. “He shows up at 6 a.m. with his wood planks and smokes his salmon right there. Smoked salmon in the store has sugar and things to preserve it and that’s the reason he says that they’re not in stores,” says Jarman. “It feels good to know what I’m consuming.” What should you grab at your local farmers’ market to cook up in your kitchen? Alex Seidel, restaurateur, executive chef, and farmers’ market aficionado shares one of his favorite recipes using fresh, local finds. “We are fortunate to have farmers’ markets that can share what is truly best in Colorado,” says Seidel. “It allows our chefs the unique opportunity to see first hand what is in season and meet the people behind the food.” 24

Chook’s Roasted Street Corn “Our Chook Street Corn recipe is simple and easy to reproduce at home as we are really just trying to highlight our local Olathe corn,” says Seidel, “I believe the corn from Colorado is so sweet and one of the greatest agricultural products we have.” Ingredients: 1 ear Olathe corn, husks removed ¾ oz. butter, browned 1 oz. Ranch (Chook’s version is made with Sheepskyr, a specific small-batch sheep’s milk) 1 tsp. Chook Chicken Salt (available at Savory Spice Shop) 1 pinch chopped parsley 1 tbsp crumbled cotija cheese Method: Blanch and lightly char corn, then cut each ear into four uniform nubs. Toss the corn nubs in warm brown butter, ranch dressing and Chook Chicken Salt. Serve in a small bowl, garnish with chopped parsley and cotija cheese. Recipe courtesy Chook Charcoal Chicken

Designing Your Dream Kitchen
DWELLING WELL
ENHANCE YOUR LIFE FROM THE KITCHEN OUT By Heather Shoning

WHEN THE HEART of the home lacks the livelihood it once had, it can affect the way you live and the way you feel about your house. This important space inspires people to buy or sell a home. But no need to move. You can have your dream kitchen with proper planning, a masterful designer and just the right finishes. Turn the page to learn how.

ENLIST THE PROS Depending on the scope of your kitchen remodel, you might need an architect and an engineer, but if you’re giving your space a refresh without changing the footprint, a great kitchen designer will help you plan, purchase and produce the entire project. Courtney Wells started her career working on design teams at Gap and Pottery Barn Kids. But when a friend started her own design firm, Wells got curious. A move from San Francisco to Denver seemed like the best time to start anew in business, too. She launched LuSi Design in 2017 and credits the Mile-High City with her instant success. “I could not do it without this community and my clients’ trust in me,” she says. “I love helping clients feel passionate about their homes.”
PLANNING AND VISION The early phases are all about planning and functionality. Wells asks lots of questions such as: What’s your current kitchen lacking? What does your dream kitchen look like and how does it function? Do you entertain? What’s your role in the kitchen: Are you someone who has a passion for cooking or a private chef? Do you prefer microwave meals? She also asks: What’s your budget? “People are afraid to share their budget,” she says. “But I must know my client’s comfort level, then I can help determine where to splurge and where to pull back. That whole process makes them less intimidated.” Next, it’s time to get busy with the concept design. Look through kitchen and home magazines to get ideas. Do you love a white kitchen 28

with pops of color? Maybe a very neutral palette throughout? Do you envision your new space as sleek and modern or cozy and warm? DEFINING THE DESIGN “Now, we’re choosing finishes,” Wells says. “The floor plan and design are happening simultaneously.” Everything needs to be accounted for, including: Where is the trash can in comparison to the kitchen sink? Glass cabinets? Open shelving? Do you want an appliance garage? Is there an area for a coffee bar? Stacked refrigerator or side-by-side? Because appliances are a big part of the design as well as a sizeable investment in the project, it’s important to seek assistance early. Maureen Ledwell of Mountain High Appliance says homeowners are making different choices in kitchen appliances these days. “We’re seeing customers upgrade and expand kitchen offerings such as ice makers, beverage centers, wine refrigerators and bar units,” she says. “And they are not only upgrading—they’re choosing a statement piece.” They might choose a range or a refrigerator—or both—in a bold color. Appliance manufactures are meeting new demands by offering matte white and matte black finishes. And they are mixing up their metals with copper, brushed brass and even rose gold accouterments. CREATING COHESION With an open-concept floor plan, it’s important to create a cohesive space. Wells considers what furnishings and design details the home already has as part of the design plan.

september 2021 // AvidLifestyle
For instance, Wells recently completed a kitchen remodel project in Cherry Hills where she chose products that would be cohesive with the dark wood elements throughout the home, while also drawing design details from the new kitchen into the existing spaces. She refreshed a nearby alcove to create an extension of the kitchen. “I used the same countertop and edge profile as the kitchen island but opted for a different cabinet design,” she says. “Legs on the alcove cabinet make it feel like furniture, and now the space functions as a bar or area to serve food.” Wells says the ways to create cohesive flow are through color, materials, lighting, accessories and window treatments. While these details might seem minor, they are the elements that will put the livelihood back into your kitchen, your home—and your life.

THE FRONT ENTRY
Dress up your front door by flanking it with fresh, fall-flowering plants such as hardy mums, ornamental kale or Allium Millenium—a member of the onion family with large purple globes comprised of tiny blossoms. Lanterns Either hanging or sitting on the front stoop, decorative lanterns with LED candles add warmth to your entrance in the evening. On the ground, cluster them in different sizes or shapes for a curated look.
LIVING ROOM/FAMILY ROOM
Grab an extra pumpkin or two when you’re at the patch to use as a “vase” for a fresh floral arrangement. Make a large hole at the top and hollow out the pumpkin as you would if you were going to carve it. Use wet floral foam to hold stems in place to create a gorgeous display using button mums, roses, greenery, dried fall leaves and more. Hand Painted Pumpkins Zhuzh up any tabletop with a collection of painted and/or gold-leafed mini pumpkins. Glitter adds even more glam—and the kids will

love helping with this project. Paint a small pumpkin or gourd in your favorite fall color or a color to match your home’s color palette, then drizzle gold paint, letting it run down the sides or coat the stem with gold glitter and “age” it with spots of gold.
KITCHEN/DINING
Tie store-bought pinecone or eucalyptus wreaths to the backs of dining chairs or bar stools. Use a decorative ribbon and add artificial flowers or other decorative items to the design—or don’t, depending on your own style. Place Setting Pumpkins A quick-and-easy way to up the fall factor for a special dinner is to simply add a small pumpkin in the center of each place setting. White pumpkins make an impact for a neutral palette or choose green gourds for an earthy look.
PICK YOUR PALETTE

Not quite ready for buttons or form fitting garments? The feeling is mutual. No harm in continuing to feel comfortable in a wide-leg silhouette, balanced with your essential mock neck top in an on-trend hue. Turn the style up a notch by going bold with jewelry — take out those danlgling diamond earrings and let them shine (see page 42 for this look). Gents! Don’t be shy to lend your sport coat to your lady to polish off her athleisure wear look as needed. And a note for yourself to remember … This versatile piece can always be paired with jeans and easily later swapped for trousers or a casual pant for a crisp look depending on the occasion. It will be your looking good go-to. HIS LOOK: Canali sweater, $365, Ted Baker London sport coat, $598, and Emporio Armani pant, $295, all at Nordstrom; Pantheon watch, $1595, at John Atencio

While we’re no strangers to sweaters and layering, and and already have quite the collection, there’s no denying the urge to add more. A mixedgauge crewneck sweater in a soft blend of Italian wool and camel hair, plus a pair of luxe wide-leg paperbag waist culottes creates an instant ensemble you never knew you needed. Yes, you can have it all when you mix and match pieces with different textures, and the result is fall-tastic. About Face SHIFTING YOUR SKIN CARE ROUTINE FOR THE CHANGING SEASONS By Courtney La Marine, Aesthetician, Owner, Clove Studios & Clove Apothecary
I THINK we can all agree that this summer has been exceptionally hot. Switching up your skincare regimen to adjust to the ever-changing climate is a task in itself. As we move into fall, temperatures start to drop and the air becomes dryer, with small fluctuations in the weather that can help ease the transition for our skin into the winter months. Change doesn’t have to be drastic. At Clove Studios, Hydrodermabrasion is the skin treatment of choice as the summer transitions into fall. This treatment deeply exfoliates the skin and simultaneously delivers a dose of hydration. In my professional opinion, a massive “drink of water” is one of the most effective ways to exfoliate the skin. Be sure to ask your aesthetician on your next visit what treatment they recommend to give your skin optimal hydration. A good, skincare regimen at home is the key to success and keeps your professional treatments fresh. Turn the page for some tips to help you keep that healthy glow after summer fades into fall.

FOR THE FELLAS Men’s skincare has evolved in the past few years and guys are here for it! Keeping it simple is the name of the game. Local barber Danny Matthews from Dark Rose Club on South Gaylord Street recommends True Grit Grooming Products. The True Grit Grooming line is made in Denver and offers a wide variety of products including Ace of Spades Shave Soap and Lawless Hair & Body Wash. The key to great skin is consistency and quality products.
Choose a cleanser that suits your skin type. Some people prefer to use two cleansers: one for the morning and one for the evening. I recommend a brightening cleanser to start your day; Sanitas Vitamin C Lactic Cleanser (sanitas-skincare.com) is my favorite. Then choose a cleanser for the evening that suits your skin type. Remember to wash your hands before cleansing and double-cleanse your face to wash off the day! Exfoliate your skin. I find a lot of people overlook this step because there is a lot of confusing advice out there about not overexfoliating, using anything harsh and being as gentle as possible. This is all good advice, but the fact remains that skin needs to be exfoliated to remove dead cells. Exfoliation leaves the skin fresh and luminous and allows for other therapeutic products to absorb properly and evenly. Clove Apothecary’s Kōtaku Skin Polish (clovestudios.com) is a gentle natural face polish and a great addition to any at-home skincare regime. Make a flawless transition into fall using a serum that aids natural hydration. I was recently introduced to the locally owned Katari Beauty line which is quite lovely. Their Bárie Mediterranean Rejuvenating Oil (kataribeauty.com) is superb for boosting collagen, which plumps up the skin and refreshes dehydrated skin. Ingredients include Prickly Pear Seed Oil, Omega-3, 6, 9 and a high concentration of Vitamin E. Hydrate! Moisturizers help replenish natural oils that are stripped away when you wash your face. I recommend changing up your moisturizer when the seasons change. CBD line, Plant Love Naturals Skin Drink: Facial Moisturizer (plantlovenaturals.com) is a seamless addition to any nightly routine. The Squalene, Gotu Kola and Hyaluronic properties found in CBD products aid in keeping skin hydrated. Weekly treatments can help beat the dry fall air. Clove Apothecary’s Moisture Mask (clovestudios.com) is a pink clay mask with anti-aging, hydrating and soothing qualities which, make it a great choice for do-it-yourself treatment between appointments. Always wear sunscreen. No matter what the weather forecast is, always, always use a high-SPFs sunscreen with broad-spectrum protection from the sun’s harmful rays. And don’t forget to reapply throughout the day. We are so lucky to live in a place with such natural beauty, but your skin shouldn’t suffer when the weather changes. Practice these steps to ease into the new season with healthy, glowing skin.

Past, Present & Future By Hillary Locke Mujica
PARK MEADOWS RETAIL RESORT opened its doors on August 30, 1996. Twenty-five years later, it’s an instrument for economic and community growth. One could argue that Park Meadows is largely responsible for sparking the commercial and residential development that has come to define the south suburbs, and there’s no one more wellversed on the subject than Senior General Manager Pam Kelly. On a rare moment when she was actually sitting still, this powerhouse of Park Meadows shared some insights with us. What were some of the biggest challenges with creating Park Meadows back in the 90s? Infrastructure was one of the challenges with County Line Road. It was still partially a gravel road with no exit on C-470. Yosemite was only two lanes—not to mention that in 1995 many southern areas of I-25 only had four lanes—so we knew that all had 57

to be addressed. Another big challenge was the retail reputation and productivity of the Denver market. It was very low in national standards, although the demographics were excellent throughout the metro area; residents were spending most retail dollars out of state. We knew “if we built it, they would come.” In 1995 there were more than 30,000 Nordstrom cardholders in the six-county metro area, and we opened Colorado’s first Nordstrom on August 30th, 1996. What were your initial goals with the retail resort? How did you define success back then compared to today? Park Meadows recognized early on the importance of retail being experiential. We always competed with the great outdoors and recreational activities and what people did with their spare time. But now it’s also how to shop e-commerce versus real bricks-andmortar commerce. I recall many experts telling me we had too many restaurant seats and too many experiential stores, and yet today that is what differentiates us from the competition. We define success in many ways and the most statistical are traffic counts and sales, which have always ranked Park Meadows in the top 10 percent of shopping centers in the nation. Can you share some of Park Meadows’ biggest accomplishments and proudest moments? Park Meadows brought the first Nordstrom as well as Crate and Barrel to Colorado and 37 new never-been-here-before stores or restaurants to the market in our first year of operation. It is a trend we have kept doing over the years. We won the National Urban Land Institute’s 1996 award for development excellence. This past year, Park Meadows in conjunction with—Douglas County, Lone Tree and TriCounty Health—wrote and obtained state approval to be the first and only shopping center to reopen last year with a variance to create a statewide format to open shopping centers during COVID. Also, since our first day, we have always given back to our community through events, charities and initiatives. Throughout our 25th year, we will continue our efforts to bring more to the communities we serve. How is Park Meadows impacting the environment regarding singleuse plastic, recycling efforts, reducing carbon footprint and other environmental impacts? Park Meadows is behind the scenes working hard to recycle and reduce our carbon footprint. In fact, our solar panels create enough energy to run all the HVAC units for Park Meadows customer areas. We also recycle most of the cardboard from shipments to our stores and are always encouraging our stores and our community to be conscious of their environmental impact. 58

AH, AUTUMN. FOR SPA LOVERS
Only a zippy hour-and-45 minute flight from Denver International Airport, Scottsdale is a snowbird favorite for good reason, especially now. Long beloved for its six pools, 200-foot water slide and dedicated golf concierges, the grande dame resort Fairmont Scottsdale Princess (scottsdaleprincess.com) is now home to a Sisley Spa—one of only 27 outposts of the Parisian original across the globe. Book a francophile-worthy 90-minute Black Rose facial for a freshfaced glow, then take yourself out at the resort’s Bourbon Steak restaurant. The chophouse masterminded by James Beard award-winner Michael Mina is a must for their lobster pot pie in brandied lobster cream, plus their hay-smoked tomahawk steak that puts lesser cuts to shame.

Colorado’s leaf-peeping experience is at its literal peak at Snowmass Club (snowmassclub.com), an Aspen-area country club so fabulous you’ll want to move in...and you can, thanks to their stable of luxe residences. Amenities here are legendary for good reason, including ski valets, an 18-hole golf course designed by Jim Engh, a 19,000-squarefoot athletic club….the list goes on. Their carefully curated fall exploits are also guaranteed to drop your jaw, whether you want to hit the cross-country ski center, mountain bike through Crayola-bright foliage, or (bliss) drop your littles at the onsite daycare, so you can treat yourselves to a topnotch date night at one of the club’s three unmissable restaurants.

FOR EQUINE ENTHUSIASTS
Even if you’re not a longtime horse lover, afternoons in the saddle have a primal allure. In Taos, New Mexico, you can add the rush of nature’s water slide, to boot, at their day-long Far Flung Saddle & Paddle Trip ( farflung.com). Picture this: watching the morning light cast its gauzy glow over Red River Canyon from horseback on a two-hour ride, then meeting your expert raft guides at the 800-foot-deep volcanic basalt cliffs at Rio Grande Gorge. Hate schlepping your gear? Don’t fret. While you tuck into a chef-made lunch, a team of horses and mules will carry your accoutrements to the lapping waters in the canyon. There, you’ll launch into a 9-mile float trip and pass seriously postcardlevel sights (look for abandoned 1930s homesteads and centuriesold petroglyphs of bighorn sheep and mule deer that were once picked into the rock by the area’s original indigenous inhabitants).

Reliving your collegiate experiences is possible ... no Solo cups required. At Grand Junction’s Hotel Maverick (thehotelmaverick.com), tucked on the Colorado Mesa University campus, extracurricular activities their staffers can help you plan would wow even the most starry-eyed freshman. Searching for wild horses amid the 36,000-acres of Little Book Cliffs Wild Horse Area? Check. Sipping your way through local vineyards, from Talon Winery to St. Kathryn Cellars? Check. Or make like Brad Pitt in A River Runs Through It and fly-fish the crystalline waters of Grand Mesa National Forest. Grand, indeed.
INFLUENCERS
// the game changer
How does Park Meadows support the community? Over the past 25 years, Park Meadows has assisted with funding, hard-good donations and volunteer support to more than 300 charities. Overall, we’ve given north of $1,000,000 and we hope we can do more. What has been the biggest surprise about being a part of this community? I enjoy the fact that when we say “Colorado’s only retail resort” many customers take it personally and offer their opinion to help us. For example, one gentleman early on told me the color of our exterior signs was all wrong. As a dentist, he had also studied the psychological reaction to color so for the first 10 years he would check back with me to see when I was going to change the colors. Although we agreed to disagree on the color choice, he always brought a smile to my face. This is just one example of how the community takes ownership of Park Meadows. They fully embrace the property and take pride that it’s “their retail resort.” How are you celebrating the 25th year? We celebrated with our community in August with a huge pancake breakfast which was a hit with our neighbors. We also gave out 250 ponderosa pine seedlings and we’re donating $2,500 to the Colorado Tree Coalition to help replenish trees lost to Colorado wildfires. Additionally, we’re sponsoring the Lone Tree Arts Center’s 10th anniversary celebration and even donating an extra surprise check. Throughout the year, we will continue offerings prizes and special shopping experiences at our new stores. Moving forward, how do you see Park Meadows expanding and enhancing? Park Meadows has always been a leader in the retail real estate industry. We will continue to grow and diversify in order to provide the latest trends to enhance customer experiences. What are the goals for the next 25 years of Park Meadows? The goal will be what it has always been— to exceed our customer’s expectations by creating a quality retail and dining experience and build upon our foundation here in south Denver.
PHOTOS: COURTESY PARK MAEDOWS RETAIL RESORT
Anything else you want our readers to know about? I’m just so proud to be a part of the south Denver community. It’s such a great place to do business because of the collaboration here. We’re nimble enough to create progressive infrastructure while still being a unique and close-knit community. Geographically, we’re able to reach out and impact Greenwood Village, Highlands Ranch, Douglas Country, Lone Tree, Centennial and even Parker and beyond. It all makes a difference to allow everyone to thrive, which is wonderful to see. 59
