5 Topics for Investigation
Bicycles were often stolen in San Francisco Fact: One bike is stolen every three hours in San Francisco, and most of them are never recovered because they’re taken apart quickly in chop shops. Problems: Using this risk-return framework for crime, it begins to be clear why there is so much bike theft. For all practical purposes, stealing a bike is a risk-free crime. It turns out there is a near zero chance you will be caught stealing a bike and if you are, the consequences are minimal.
Ocean resources running out Fact: In a four-year study at the National Center of Ecological Analysis and Synthesis, at the University of California, scientists “researched the historical records of sixty-four oceanic regions across the globe, representing 83 percent of the fish species in the world.” They projected that the world’s oceans would be mostly barren of fish in less than 50 years. Problem: Humanity is overusing ocean resources, and humans overfish because fish are packed with protein and beneficial nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, B vitamins and are naturally high in protein and low in calories.

The gap between kids and parents Fact: The generation gap is nothing but a certain kind of psychological and emotional gap between parents or elder people and their younger ones. The huge generation gap creates misunderstanding and a lack of attachment between the parents and children. Problem: Generation gaps are essentially “information gaps” in that children have often had access to information and opinions that their parents did not have while growing up.
Mental illness among Asian Americans Fact: Suicide “was the second leading cause of death for Asian-Americans aged 15-34.” Problems: Many Asian families have the unwritten rule: You are how well you do in school. So one of the biggest factors for Asian Americans is the kind of pressure many students put on themselves from a very young age. Asian parents often reject professional diagnoses of their children’s depression and mental health. “They fear that any mental problems will reflect badly on their son or daughter, as well as tarnish their entire lineage,”
Using too many paper cups Fact: Americans throw away 25 billion Styrofoam coffee cups every year Problem: Americans consume 400 million cups of coffee per day or equivalent to 146 billion cups of coffee per year, so bringing their cup to buy coffee hasn’t become a habit for people.

Creative Brief
Background: Many Asian families have the unwritten rule: You are how well you do in school. So one of the biggest factors for Asian Americans is the kind of pressure many students put on themselves from a very young age. Asian parents often reject professional diagnoses of their children’s depression and mental health. “They fear that any mental problems will reflect badly on their son or daughter, as well as tarnish their entire lineage.’’ For this reason, they won’t seek help when they need to. Also, Asian families feel shy to express their feeling to each other, seldom communicate. Those reasons can badly cause mental problems. Overall: Sunyoung wants to reduce the stigma and promote communication between parents and children.Reduce the stigma by educating and promoting the proper concept of mental health; understanding makes people willing to seek help when they need to.Improve communication with running activities, parents and children can have communication more during participate in the same activity.

The idea of the logo comes from the Sun and a speech bubble, and the sun represents brightness and positivity. The speech bubble represents communication. I combined them because Sunyoung is a place that can lead c:0 m:69 y:83 k:0

people who need help to the bright side, and let parents and kids have a better relationship by communicating with each other.
The reason I chose Avenir is I wanted to present the tone of human warmth and friendliness. Avenir design is based on two earlier sanserif typefaces, Erbar and Futura, and word Avenir means “futurein French. Frutiger has described Avenir as a geometric sans serif with a human touch, unlike the cold mechanical flavor of Futura.

Posters
The concept for the poster series is to show communication between Sunyoung and the audience. To make them think through and face the problems, I try to speak in a friendly tone or put myself in someone else’s shoes so the audience can feel Sunyoung is a friend who can help. The concept of the posters is Sunyoug talking with the audiences. The initial posters I try to use texts and photos of some Asian children and parent to express the messages, but I feel it’s not clear and strong enough to show the emotion. Then I’m thinking about add some elements to express more feeling, so I add some handwritten text about what Asian parents often say to their to their children to represent the pressure. For example,“Attend top university” and “How do you make money?” etc. For the final posters, I take off the photos and add a speech bubble ,make the posters seems more like Sunyoung are having a conversation with the audiences.

The most special part is the “Safe place blog.” It’s an anonymous blog, so people don’t have to worry about anyone knowing who wrote the post, and because of this reason people will be willing to post their secrets or words from the heart. It’s good for parents and kids to communicate and understand the difference thoughts between generations.

Event
For the event, I decided to hold lectures to provide and educate about the proper concept of mental health. The lecture will be divided into two, respectively for parents and kids in two separate rooms, but still based on the same topic. Also, I will invite different speakers to make sure the speakers fit different audiences. After the lecture will be an activity to let parents and kids get together in the sharing room, which is a part of my environment, and write down what they have learned or were inspired by from the lectures anonymously. The purpose of the activity is to make parents and kids closer by sharing feelings.

Environment
For the environment, I created three different areas, including lecture rooms, sharing place and workshops. There are two lecture rooms so that I can hold two lectures, one for parents and another for children at the same time. I divided the sharing space into the reading area; there are books for people to read, black and white boards that to write down what people want to share, and another area for people to chat and communicate with others. For the workshops, I created three different functions of workshops. The first and second are workshops for handcrafting, and the third one is for cooking.

Conclusion
According to 2007 data from the National Center for Health Statistics, female Asian Americans ages 15 to 24 were second only to Native Americans in their rate of suicide deaths. What caused the problem? The reasons are Asian parents usually give too much pressure to their children to succeed in academics and live up to the “model minority stereotype, and Asian parents and children express emotions or communicate less with each other, etc. Also, the research from National Latino and Asian American Study found that Asian Americans are three times less likely to seek mental health services than Whites. Asian Americans don’t like to ask for help because of the culture and family. In Asian tradition concept, discussing mental health concerns is considered taboo. Mental illness is shameful to tell and often people think it presents weakness or is just over thinking, and people can recover and get through it by themselves if they try hard. All these cause lots of Asians to avoid seeking treatment until the disease is advanced. Those all are problems we need to think about deeply, and for the current issue, Sunyoung creates an environment that gives people positive, energetic and professional feelings. There are multiple sharing spaces that people can relax and relieve stress through talking to others. Sunyoung not only wants to make people feel relaxed but also wants to promote the proper concept of mental health by lectures and websites. Communication is another issue Sunyoung pays attention to. We want parents and children to communicate, learn how to respect and be closer to each other by running workshops and activities. Finally, the only way to improve mental illness among Asian Americans is to face it and understand it.
