INSTITUTIONAL

The PSG Convention Centre, a building in the complex of PSG Institute of Technical Education & Applied Research, Coimbatore is an individual auditorium in the campus with a seating capacity of 1500. In this project, I was required to make detailed 3d model of the building in REVIT software, including structural columns, beams, truss system etc.

PSG CONVENTION CENTRE LOCATION: AVINASHI ROAD, PEELAMEDU, COIMBATORE CONTRIBUTION: DETAILED 3D MODEL WITH STRUCTURAL DETAILS AND LANDSCAPING ON REVIT SOFTWARES USED: AUTOCAD, REVIT

PROFESSIONAL PROJECTS

The auditorium is a hybrid structure, working with both RCC as well as steel. Due to it’s egg-shell roof structure, only the roof had to be supported by curvilinear I-sections and hollow sections, while it’s columns and beams are built in RCC.

PROFESSIONAL PROJECTS

Himachal Pradesh Technical University, Hamirpur, another institutional project spans across an area of 4 acre. Being the new campus of HPTU, the project consisted of an Admin and Academic Block so far. As a part of the project team, my work involved producing working drawings that consisted of building elevations of both the blocks, 3d views of the individual blocks and then of the site. Other details such as front porch detail, terrace plan, false ceiling design for the admin block were also worked upon whilst the duration of my professional internship. A site 3d view in totality was first generated before making rendered views of the project.

Complimenting the staircase which stood right at the main entrance to the building, was its porch, constructed in RCC, whose plane is in the same plane as that of the staircase behind it. Below are the porch details and terrace plan of the Admin Block, which has truss roof.

CONVENTION CENTRE AT S A B A R M AT I RIVERFRONT An oblong site with an area of 13 acre, sitting right next to the Sabarmati Riverfront, with an attempt to capitalize from its location and expand its economy with a project like this while also producing revenue through tourism. The site although flat, plays in levels with its river side having a difference of 6m from the Sabarmati promenade, while it’s roadside level has a difference of 3m from the riverfront market. The convention centre is divided into two zones: formal & informal, with the left side comprising of informal zone, which has exhibition hall and food court with restaurant while the right side has the formal areas i.e. an auditorium having a capacity of 500 delegates while a bigger convention hall having a capacity of 1000 people.

DESIGN EVOLUTION

STAGE-1

STAGE-2

STAGE-3 ACADEMIC PROJECTS

STAGE 1: At the first stage, the idea of separating the two main blocks was conceived with the buildings connected through a common corridor, promoting walkability to the users. STAGE 2: At the second stage, a common central piazza was introduced in between the buildings to serve as a common corridor. The green spaces for both the buildings were defined. STAGE 3: At this stage the building took the form of how it stands today with its iconic wave form, both the convention block and exhibition block distinct from one another, along with their outdoor spaces defined. An existing staircase present at the site, which leads to lower promenade of the Sabarmati riverfront became a central axis for the equal division of both these buildings

BUILDING FORM The building form originated from the need to provide individual green spill out spaces for both the zones. For exhibitions it was essential to provide an outdoor space which could be utilized for outdoor artisan exhibitions when needed. For conventions, this space was thought of to provide an outdoor relaxation space, when could be doubled up as an outdoor buffet. Both of these areas were thought about with the context of the site, and thus a wave form symbolic of the Sabarmati River, was generated. The need to connect all the zones together was solved by a connecting corridor that joined all the buildings. It was majorly constructed in structural glazing so as to intake the view from Sabarmati river. The connecting corridor then formulated in the shape of a wave, symbolic of the river.

FOCAL BUILDING IN A CONTEXT T O U R I S T I N F O R M AT I O N C E N T R E

SIDE ELEVATION

·Aluminium and glass are the major materials used with a water body in front to sublime and compliment the effect of huge concrete masses.

The project demanded a design that stood out from its surrounding architecture of Le Corbusier, yet respected it. Being a tourist information centre, THE building had to have a vision coherent with the Capitol Complex, situated to its east.

AERIAL VIEW OF THE SITE

FRONT ELEVATION

PROJECT CONCEPT ·The concept of toppling effect has been used. One edge of the surface is applied with force which raises the surface behind it towards the sky.

TOP VIEW OF THE SITE

·Deconstructivism style of architecture has been used to create a contrast with Corbusier’s modern style.

URBAN DESIGN

This project included redevelopment, renewal, rehabilitation and revitalization of small-scale urban areas. It focused on mapping the area to be studied, addressing its persistent issues and coming up with interventions to cure the same.

EXISITING LAND USE MAP

EXISITING ROAD NETWORK MAP

ACADEMIC PROJECTS

The urban pocket of old Manimajra city, around the Manimajra Fort, was studied under this project. It included the study and analysis of all the peripheral and interlinking streets as well as buildings around the fort to identify the problems which obstructed the development of the area as an urban centre despite the presence of the historical fort. The study by creating various maps for the fort and its surrounding area. These included but not restricted to: • Land Use Plan to study its inhabitation pattern and use of buildings as such, • Figure Ground Map to study the open spaces and built up area, giving an idea of density of the area, • Building Height Map which depicted the relation of a building height (whether single storey, double or triple) with its adjacent street width, • Vehicular & Pedestrian Circulation Maps, to understand which roads are wide enough to cater to four wheelers, • Time Travel Maps, which roughly showed the traffic level in equal intervals of distance, • Parking Maps to see the existing opportunities of parking as well as the future ones, • Streetwise, Building Age and Condition Maps, to determine the outbreak of problems existent in the area and scope for future renovations. Studying the area, led to selection of two main streets that connected the fort to highways. One being Sadar Bazar street that connected to Manimajra market and then towards Panhckula, while the other was Kalagram Street which opened to the road connecting to Chandigarh. This led to further detailed studies of both the streets with respect to the maps listed above, and then providing necessary and suitable interventions for both as well as the fort while being coherent of the context, that is the Manimajra Fort.

The old Manimajra city saw development when it was under no jurisdiction, neither Chandigarh Ut nor Haryana. As a result all or most of the construction took place without conforming to any bye laws and on top of that no judiciary checked the uncontrolled development of this area. According to the undertaken study, suitable interventions came up, such as:

INTERVENTIONS FOR STREET 1

PROPSED LAND USE MAP

• Widening of streets at certain junctions as dictated by Chandigarh bye-laws, • Pedestrianizing streets and limiting access of vehicles on them, • Providing eating joints to cater to needs of pedestrians, • Relocating temporary structures and turning them into permanent ones, • Multilevel parking at already built paid parking to accommodate all vehicles whether of shop owners, or residents of the area, • Taking character of old structures still intact on the street, and then merging it and uniforming other shops according to it, to establish character, • Demolishing any illegal encroachments and thus widening of streets, • Improving street scape, making it more people-friendly by erection of street lighting, street furniture, running electrical connections through ground rather than on poles on streets.

INTERVENTIONS FOR STREET 2

PROPSED FIGURE GROUND MAP

As per study, lack of any community space was also one major part of street traffic. And to rejuvenate the shambled fort, in such a way that it becomes an integral part of the community, interventions inside it were also thought upon. Turning the empty space inside the fort to usable community spaces which could generate revenue for the maintenance of the fort was one solution, while it would automatically increase its popularity among the residents surrounding it.
