CHORREADERO
UN VIAJE AL CENTRO DE LA TIERRA CHIAPA DE CORZO torias, escucharás de la voz de los expertos guías de Petra Vertical, que al mismo tiempo también trazan el camino, cuidando tu seguridad y explotando la diversión al máximo. Escalando, trepando y caminando sobre grandes rocas, se hace un intrépido recorrido en el que te maravillarás con las grandiosas formaciones de piedra caliza, n el centro de la cañada entre los árboles y las pozas naturales se siente una grandiosa sinergia que te prepara para la aventura. El recorrido comienza en la entrada de la cueva de donde desemboca la cascada El Chorreadero, una caída de agua de 23 m de altura que alimenta el balneario que se encuentra a sus pies. Al llegar a las fauces de la cueva, realizarás el primer salto a una poza para encender la adrenalina y para estar más receptivos para la diversión. La primera galería es amplia y está armonizada por el potente sonido de una cascada, al ir incorporándote a el brazo fósil (una ramificación seca) de la cueva, la noche ejerce su dominio. Puedes encontrar en el primer trayecto velas y copales con incienso, que las personas depositan en este místico lugar; para los zoques, las velas iluminan la noche, tal como lo hacen las estrellas, y el humo acompaña las plegarias al señor del monte. Ésta y otras fantásticas his-
estalagmitas, estalactitas y místicos escenarios tallados por el agua. Vivir esta aventura llena de adrenalina, es como sumergirse en la novela Viaje al centro de la Tierra, de Julio Verne. Sin sentir el transcurrir del tiempo llegarás a la última parte del ascenso de 150 msnm, conocida por su característica forma con el nombre de Pachamama (Madre Tierra, para los pueblos andinos).

Al salir del vientre de la tierra, se llega a un balcón que da a la sala de los Halcones, desde ahí se siente la inmensidad de la galería, cubierta por un manto obscuro, donde el rugir del agua se intensifica, acelerando los corazones. Se hace un rappel de 12 m para llegar al fondo de la sala, en la que topas a la fría serpiente que se arrastra por las entrañas de la tierra. A lo largo de 300 m de recorrido por la galería podrás observar
Lo que sigue de la travesía es una poza de la que se sale nadando por debajo de una cascada, la formación rocosa que se encuentra a su costado es ideal para tomarte la foto del recuerdo de tu intrépido viaje a través de la montaña. El río subterráneo continúa su cauce, por lo que la diversión no se detiene; se realiza otro rappel largo, se nada por algunos metros, y se llega una zona de resbaladillas naturales. Esta energética ruta de diversión se concluye con la última cascada dentro de la cueva, que desemboca en el punto dónde iniciaste tu aventura.

Scaling, climbing and walking over big rocks you can do an intrepid tour where you will be amazed with the great formations of lime stones, stalagmites, stalactites and mystery scenarios carved by the water. Without feeling that the time goes by, you will arrive to the last part of the climbing at 150 meters over the sea level, which is known as Pachamama (Mother Earth for the Andean Peoples) due to its characteristic shape. You will arrive to the longest rappel inside the cave where the adrenaline goes off as a rocket to the sky when descending 20 meters next to a cascade. After that there are two more ponds (one is 8 meters and the other 3 meters) where you will have the option of jumping into the void, rappel descending or sliding on a rock, all depending on your adventure desires. l hierro forjado es un arte que data en México desde la época colonial, técnica introducida por los españoles, que en manos de sus grandiosos maestros crea enigmáticas y fabulosas piezas de arte. En la ciudad de San Cristóbal de Las Casas, se localiza el barrio de El Cerrillo, conformado en 1549, es famoso por la actividad de forja de hierro. Personajes sumamente iluminados en este oficio dejaron una gran historia, que se encuentra detrás de cada cruz, candelero, perchero y otras majestuosas obras. Nacido también en esta cuna de herreros, el artesano Arisel Flores Ballinas trae el don en la sangre. Este amo del marro y el yunque, empezó a aprender el arte del hierro forjado a los 17 años, con casi siete lustros de experiencia ha dejado grandes contribuciones en esta materia. La experiencia y el arduo trabajo dan como resultado enigmáticas figuras que brotan de su imaginación. El metal renace como el fénix en su taller artesanal o
fragua, donde en un fogón se coloca el hierro sobre el carbón ardiente, hasta que éste se pone al rojo vivo. Sostiene los pedazos de hierro con unas pinzas y con cada impacto se eliminan las impurezas y se moldean las piezas que conformarán una verdadera obra de arte. Con gran habilidad, rapidez y precisión da los martillazos exactos, para después endurecer el metal al enfriarlo. Los adornos de lámina, son dibujados y cortados con tijeras, con diez cinceles de diferentes tamaños y formas

se tallan las facciones de cada elemento de la pieza que decorará algún hogar. Se les da color colocándolos en el fuego durante lapsos de tiempo muy precisos, según los matices que desee obtener el artista. Durante este proceso el maestro emplea sus secretos para que las figuras tomen místicos colores, que son inigualables. Al final se une la base con los adornos a través de remaches. Es así como nacen “El árbol de la vida” (hasta más de dos metros de altura), “La cruz de Cristo”, candelabros, percheros, chapas para puertas y todo lo que te puedas imaginar en metal. Las piezas las elaboran en varios diseños y tamaños, cada una con significado propio. Por ejemplo “El árbol de la vida” con sus diversos elementos (Adán y Eva, la manzana, la serpiente, colibrís, quetzales y demás) ejemplifica el génesis de la existencia.
En La Cruz de Cristo, se recrea la crucifixión: la paloma representa Espíritu Santo, las rosas significan amor a Cristo, también tiene el gallo que le cantó a San Pedro, el corazón de Jesús, la lanza y la escalera con la que lo bajaron de la cruz al hijo de Dios. El maestro Arisel Flores Ballinas es de los últimos sancristobalenses que realizan este oficio en peligro de extinción. Obtuvo el primer lugar en artesanía de Chiapas, además sus trabajos han viajado por todo el mundo, algunos a Holanda, Canadá, Japón, Italia, Estados Unidos y más. El oficio del hierro forjado es una herencia que deja a sus hijos Cesar y Lisandro, que también sienten el mismo amor y pasión por este noble oficio.

rought Iron is an art dating in Mexico since the colonial times.. It is a technique introduced by Spaniards that in the hands of their magnificent teachers creates enigmatic and fabulous pieces of art. In the city of San Cristobal de las Casas the neighborhood El Cerrillo (the little hill) is located; it was established in 1549. It is famous for its Wrought Iron activity; greatly illuminated characters of this craft left a great history that is told behind each cross, candlestick, rack and other majestic works. Born among these cradle of blacksmiths, the artisan Arisel Flores Ballinas has the gift in his blood. This master of the hammer and the anvil began learning the art of Wrought Iron at age 17 and with almost 7 decades of experience has left great contributions in this matter. The experience and hard work result in enigmatic figures that sprout from his imagination. Metal is reborn as the Phoenix at his craft workshop or forge where in a bonfire the iron is placed on burning coal, until it turns red hot. He holds the pieces of iron with tweezers then he molds the pieces that will form a true work of art. With great ability, speed and good accuracy he gives the exact blows with the hammer, in order to harden the metal later at cooling it. The plate’s ornaments are drawn and cut with scissors; with 10 chisels of different sizes and shapes that carve the factions of each element of the piece that will
decorate some home. The color is given by placing them on fire during long and precise periods of time, according with the tones that the artist wants to obtain. During this process the master uses his secrets so that the figures take mythical colors that are unmatched. At the end the base and the ornaments are joined with rivets. This is how pieces such as “El Arbol de la Vida” (The Tree of Life) with a height over 2 meters, “La Cruz de Cristo” (The Cross of Christ), candlesticks, racks, door locks and everything you can imagine in metal are born. The pieces are made in different shapes and sizes, each one with its own meaning. As an example “The Tree of Life” with its different elements (Adam and Eve, the apple, the snake, the hummingbird, Quetzales and more) exemplifies life’s genesis. In The Cross of Christ the Crucifixion is recreated: the dove represents the Holy Spirit, the roses mean the love to Christ; It has also has the rooster that crowed to Saint Peter, the heart of Christ, the spear and the latter which was used to take down God’s Son from the cross.

IGLESIA DEL CERRO DE
GUADALUPE hill church n lo más alto de un cerro al oriente de la ciudad de San Cristóbal de Las Casas, se levanta imponente el templo de Guadalupe, que se localiza en el barrio homónimo, es una hermosa construcción del siglo XIX. Desde la fundación de esta ciudad con el nombre de Villa Real en 1528, por el Capitán Diego de Mazariegos, se asentó en acta de cabildo por el escribano Gerónimo de Cáceres, el levantamiento de una horca para hacer valer justicia en el cerro ubicado al oriente de la ciudad, precisamente donde hoy se erige el templo de la Virgen de Guadalupe. El barrio de Guadalupe surge como una extensión del barrio de El Cerrillo (fundado en el año de 1550) y su origen como tal se remonta apenas a la primera mitad del siglo XIX, cuyos asentamientos más notorios iniciaron entre los años de 1845 y 1870. Por su parte la iglesia que actualmente podemos admirar en lo alto del “Tepeyac” se construyó hacia el año de 1835, supliendo una pequeña ermita construida apenas 3 años antes. Este templo en un inicio se encontraba muy aislado del centro de la ciudad, a tal grado que aún en 1866 fue escenario de violentos enfrentamientos de la llamada lucha antirreeleccionista.
De estilo neoclásico, su arquitectura fue mejorada hacia 1854, estando de obispo Carlos María Colina y Rubio, quien recibiera la condecoración de Comendador de la Orden de Guadalupe por parte del entonces presidente Antonio López de Santa Anna. Posee una puerta de arco de medio punto, ventana del coro y está hecha de una sola nave, además cuenta con una capilla lateral en la que con velas de muchos colores los hermanos indígenas depositan su fe con gran fervor. En su interior se acondicionó un altar para adorar una imagen donada por el Deán Mayor de Catedral, Don Lino García, hacia el año de 1850. Hasta el año de 1898 la iglesia permaneció sin muchos arreglos, salvo unas gradas rústicas que permitían un acceso más “cómodo” a su interior. Este barrio desarrolló a finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX la industria de los juguetes de madera, las velas y la elaboración de dulces selectos como los confites. Hoy sus habitantes son los que custodian tan hermosa joya arquitectónica y dan vida a la feria que se realiza en honor a su Santa Madre en el mes de diciembre. Para llegar a este templo se hace un ascenso por 79 escalones, al frente de la puerta principal se tiene una gran panorámica del valle; y a sus pies se encuentra una bella plazuela. Conoce la fe de este Pueblo Mágico y maravíllate con su arquitectura.

t the top of a hill in the east side of the city of San Cristobal de las Casas, the imposing Guadalupe’s temple stands, it is located at the homonym neighborhood, it is a beautiful building from the XIX century. Since the establishment of the city under the name of Villa Real (Royal Villa) back in 1528, by Captain Diego de Mazariegos, it was settled on the Minutes of Council by the Notary Geronimo de Caceres, the building of a gallows to enforce justice at the hill located
on the east side of the city, precisely where the Guadalupe Virgin’s Temple stands today. Guadalupe’s neighborhood arises as an extension of the Cerrillo’s (Little Hill) neighborhood (established in the year 1550) and its origin as it is goes back just to the first half of the XIX century, whose most notorious settlements began between the years of 1845 and 1870. Meanwhile the church which we can admire today at the top of the “Tepeyac” (the given name of the hill where the church stands) was built in the year 1835, substituting a small hermitage that was built 3 years before. This temple initially was very isolated from downtown in such a way that in the year 1866 it was the scene of violent confrontations in the so called the fight against reelection.

It has an Arch door of half point; a choir window, it was built in one single building; it has also a side chapel in which with candles of different colors our brothers the indigenous natives place their faith with great fervor. 1850. Until the year 1898, the church remained without many arrangements, except for some rustic steps the allowed a more comfortable access to its interior. This neighborhood developed at the end of the XIX century and the beginning of the XX the wooden toy industry, the candles y and the elaboration of selected candy such as the Confites (a paste made of sugar shaped in small balls). Today its inhabitants are the ones guard this beautiful architectonic jewl and they give life to the fair that is held in honor of their Holy Mother in December. In order to get to this temple you have to do a 79 step ascent, in front of the main door you have a great panoramic of the valley, at the bottom there is a beautiful small square. HANDS THAT IMPLORE l imponente Cañón del Sumidero, guerrero incansable de la naturaleza, culmina su trayectoria levantando las manos al cielo, recitando una plegaria, que llega a tus oídos por el fresco viento, pide por su salud, por permanecer siempre verde y por todos los seres que coexisten en su interior. El transcurso para llegar a este lugar es parte de la diversión, tras haber dejado los túneles que cortan la montaña, te adentrarás por la selva baja, que es hogar de bellas especies de flora y fauna. Después de descender por la ladera y volver a ascender se llega al majestuoso mirador Manos que imploran. La ansiosa espera ha tenido grandiosos frutos, el panorama es celestial, al frente tuyo verás dos obras maestras: una tallada por la naturaleza a través de miles de años y la otra mucho más joven (obra de seres de pensamiento libre), mejor conocida como Presa de Chicoasén. El parador turístico recibe su nombre por la solemne forma de las paredes del Cañón que termina justo al frente de este lugar. Desde los pasillos del mirador puedes apreciar las excepcionales postales que los calurosos días despejados ofrecen.
Gozar del Cañón, del río Grijalva, de los islotes, del embalse, ver en el agua el reflejo de una parvada de patos al volar o a los alegres turistas pasear en lancha. Sin duda alguna es un lugar privilegiado y es para ti. Del lado más próximo al embalse se encuentra un pequeño y acogedor restaurante, su especialidad es la mojarra frita, que hace alarde de su frescura y exquisito sabor. También puedes pedir unos ricos camarones al gusto y mientras esperas que tu platillo esté listo, disfruta de los hermosos paisajes recostado en una hamaca bajo la sombra de la palapa. Osumacinta tiene sus encantos y este lugar es uno de ellos. Abre los sentidos y escucha el canto de los pájaros y grillos haciendo coro con el ulular del viento entre las hojas. Es el lugar ideal para tomar un buen y merecido descanso o si deseas emprender la aventura, puedes hacer el recorrido en lancha por el emblemático Cañón del Sumidero, con sólo solicitarlo con el propietario del restaurante. La tierra de Chiapas es mágica, para encontrar la relajación y diversión sólo tienes que dejarte hechizar por sus bellezas.

The course in order to arrive to this place is part of the fun, after leaving behind tunnels that cut the mountain; you will go into the lower jungle which is the home of beautiful flora and fauna species. After descending the hillside and ascending again you arrive to the majestic lookout Manos que Imploran.
In the nearest side of the dam there is a small and cozy restaurant; its specialty is the fried Tilapia flaunting its freshness and delicious flavor. You can also order delicious shrimps seasoned to your own taste while you wait for you dish to be served; enjoy the beautiful views laying on a hammock under the shadow of a Palapa (a thatched-roof, open-sided structure).
The anxious wait has had great results, the view is celestial, in the front you will see two master pieces: one carved by nature through thousands of years and the other a lot younger (work of free thought beings), better known as the Presa de Chicoasen (Chicoasen’s Dam); the tourist site gets its name for the solemn shape of the walls of the Cannon that end just in front of this place.

La base principal de estas antiquísimas bebidas es el maíz, en el caso del tascalate, este grano se tosta y se muele hasta pulverizarlo, se doran y muelen semillas de cacao hasta que queden también en polvo, se le da un característico sabor mediante achiote y canela, ingredientes que también se trituran para dar esencia a un polvo rojizo, como el de la tierra de muchos pueblos de Chiapas.
Algunas personas también preparan esta mezcla con cacao, es tan grande su poder, que es el protagonista de frases populares como “hey voz, no podés chiflar y comer pinole”, argumento que se le dice a las personas que intentan hacer dos actividades al mismo tiempo, sin concluir con éxito ninguna. a historia del tascalate y pinole comienza hace más de 4, 000 años, cuando los mokayas (vocablo que en mixe-zoque significa “gente del maíz”), domesticaron el grano de la vida en las costas chiapanecas del Pacífico. Esta revolución verde, cambió sin duda la gastronomía de Mesoamérica y posteriormente del mundo. Desde entonces la importancia de este alimento es innegable, presente siempre en las solemnes ceremonias en forma de atole y tamales.

Mokaya (word that in the Mixe-Zoque language means “people of corn”), domesticated the grain of life in Pacific Ocean coasts of Chiapas. The green revolution certainly changed the cuisine of Mesoamerica and subsequently of the world. Since then the importance of this food is undeniable, it is always present in the solemn ceremonies in the forms of Atole (Corn made hot beverage) and tamales. With this magical grain prehistoric peoples developed the Tascalate and Pinole; they are survivors of the ravages of time, which can be found in today’s markets, regional food stores or as a refreshing drink that accompanies your typical food at a traditional restaurant. The main basis of these ancient beverages is corn, in the case of the Tascalate, this grain is toasted and grounded until pulverized, then they are browned and they grind cocoa beans until they are pulverized too; they gives the distinctive flavor with axiote (a red color powder obtained from the axiote plant) and cinnamon, these ingredients are also crushed to give essence to a reddish powder, similar to the color of the land of many towns of Chiapas.
In the Pinole process, as well as with the Tascalate, the corn is browned and grounded to create some kind of flour; in fact its name comes from the Nahuatl word Pinolli which means “corn flour”. It is made with blue corn, which gives a bluish dark color similar to the land that breeds the seed that gives life; there is another essential ingredient which is the aromatic cinnamon. Some people also prepare this mixture with cocoa; its power is so great that is the subject of popular phrases such as “Hey Vos, no podés chiflar y comer pinole” (meaning: Hey man, you cannot whistle and eat Pinole) this argument is told to people trying to do two things at the same time without successfully concluding either one. Both beverages are nutritious and they are the worthy representatives of our deepest roots. Both powders are dissolved in water, stirred until they turn into a uniform mixture then, it is sweetened with sugar and ice is added to give a refreshing taste.
