CHOCOHUITAL martinique bird festival, the chocohuital migratory bird sanctuary scucho los sonidos del interminable amor entre las olas y la playa, la fresca brisa del mar alborota mi cabello mientras pequeños peces se aventuran para jugar entre mis pies. Sentado a la orilla del estero, tomo una aromática taza de café mientras disfruto de la tranquilidad y espectacular belleza del amanecer. En la templada mañana camino unos pasos y me recuesto para relajarme sobre una cómoda hamaca. Chocohuital es un paraíso plagado de diversión: recorridos en lancha, pesca en estero, deportes acuáticos, caminatas en la playa y mucho más. En diciembre esta zona de la Reserva de la Biosfera La Encrucijada se pinta de colores con un espectáculo fenomenal, el 3er. Festival de Aves Martinica. Después de fascinantes recorridos en lancha por los túneles del estero se llega a una laguna que es sede y da nombre a esta fiesta de la naturaleza. Desde el observatorio, verás a cientos de pájaros (garza tigre, martín pescador, za-
rapitos, chorlos, tringas, gaviotas, pelícanos, gavilanes y mucho más) alimentarse y anidar. Casi todos hicieron una monumental travesía desde Alaska, Estados Unidos y Canadá para deleitarte con sus bailes y cantos en este desfile de vistosos matices. Entre las actividades que se realizan está la liberación de crías de iguana para repoblar la zona. También podrás ver a los caimanes, cocodrilos y tortugas tomar el sol en las riveras del estero. En la playa, cerca de la Bocabarra “Mapache” existe otro observatorio de aves de playa, en esta zona se produce un fenómeno espectacular en el que se encuentran el agua del mar y del estero, una reunión armonizada por los sones del mar, el viento y el silbido de las aves. Puedes disfrutar de exquisitos platillos del mar; Don Benjamín, el experto cocinero del Centro Acuatic Sports, mejor conocido por la gente local como “El Canal”, guisa un exquisito filete de pescado empapelado
relleno de camarón cocinado en un fogón de manera tradicional. Si se te antoja un rico caldo de mariscos, estofado o mole de gallina de rancho, en el Hospedaje Doña Chave, la señora Isabel Sequeda los prepara con un sazón único, también puedes disfrutar de las especialidades del Restaurante “Las Brisas” del club de playa Refugio del Sol o bien acercarte a alguna de las palapas a orillas del estero. Durante el paseo en lancha para visitar el campamento tortuguero de Costa Azul, disfrutarás de majestuosos paisajes enmarcados por el mangle amarillo, único en esta zona de la reserva. Al atardecer, podrás contribuir con la conservación haciendo una liberación de crías. Conocerás el centro de incubación y al técnico Carlos Ochoa Rojas, encargado del lugar, quien da platicas de concientización a los pobladores y turistas, te explicará sobre la vida de estos animales que llegan a vivir hasta 100 años. Es una
noble labor en la que estos hombres del mar arriesgan su vida para salvar a la tortuga marina, con el fin de que nuestras playas sigan siendo las anfitrionas del milagro de la vida. Después de la romántica puesta del sol, siguen las largas caminatas en la playa, acampando sobre la húmeda arena, el crepúsculo te regala un verdadero tesoro: un firmamento lleno de millones de estrellas, donde los meteoros trazan finas líneas blancas en el cielo. La noche transforma a la región y en Sanbuquero sucede algo especial. Se llega a él bajo el manto de la obscuridad a través de un largo recorrido por el complejo de canales de manglar, es el hábitat natural de los cocodrilos, estarás muy cerca de ellos, sin duda una aventura llena de adrenalina y diversión. El 15 y 16 de diciembre se realizará el 3er. Festival de Aves Martinica, donde los miembros de Sociedad Cooperativa de Prestadores de Servicios Ecoturísticos Chocohuital, te esperan con las alas abiertas para consentirte mientras te diviertes con exposiciones
fotográficas, talleres de artesanías, muestras gastronómicas y eventos culturales. La región fue fundada hace tres generaciones por gente muy trabajadora, una época en donde abundaba el árbol de chocohuite, razón de la toponimia del lugar. Los lugareños los atenderán con gran amabilidad y te harán pasar una estancia muy agradable. Deja que la terapia de la naturaleza actúe sobre ti y desaparezca el estrés y los problemas. Emergen de la imaginación de las personas de la comunidad bellas artesanías elaboradas con productos locales; tus pequeñitos pueden aprender a hacer las suyas con las conchas y caracoles que recojan en la costa. Bajo el sol, la alegría y las risas se escuchan por todos lados: voleyball y fútbol de playa, niños haciendo castillos de arena, bronceadas figuras jugando entre las olas, un frisbee volando, barro con propiedades
curativas, pesca recreativa en el estero, jet ski, kayak, ski náutico y mucho más. La naturaleza es tan rica y noble en Chocohuital que durante todo el año siempre va del brazo con la diversión, atrévete a vivir la aventura en la otra selva de Chiapas, una más de las riquezas que el estado tiene para ti.

During your boat ride to visit the turtle camp Costa Azul, you will enjoy some majestic landscapes framed by the yellow mangrove, it is unique to this area of the reserve. At dusk, you can contribute to conservation by the releasing of hatchlings. You will see the hatchery and you will meet with the technician Carlos Ochoa Rojas, who manages the place; he gives awareness talks to residents and tourists; he will describe to you the life of these animals that can live up to 100 years. It is a noble work in which these sea men risk their lives to save sea turtles, so that our beaches remain hosting the miracle of life.

After the romantic sunset, long walks on the beach are next; camping on the wet sand: Here the twilight gives you a real treasure: a sky full of millions of stars, where meteors plot fine white lines in the sky. The night transforms the region and something special happens at Sanbuquero. In order to get there, you have to go under the cover of the darkness through a long journey into the complex mangrove channels; it is the natural habitat of the crocodiles; you will be very close to them; no doubt this an adventure full of adrenaline and fun.

¡Aquí la historia no es nada aburrida... y todo funciona!
aminar entre sus pasillos es hacer un viaje literal al pasado del Valle del Jovel, mientras escuchas la música del fonógrafo, puedes tomarte una fotografía portando un casco y una espada española. Puedes llamar a tu casa para saludar desde un teléfono con más de 90 años de antigüedad, coser con una diminuta máquina, tocar una canción en la marimba más pequeña y disparar unas pistolas artesanales creadas por manos de sancristobalences. Este es un museo de gente para la gente y todas los objetos que se exhiben en el lugar funcionan. De la Fundación Miguel Muñoz se desprende el museo, es un proyecto que inició como una conversación casual entre el Ing. Miguel Ángel Muñoz (Director del museo y cronista de esta ciudad colonial) y el Dr. Jan de Vos. El joven equipo del Ing. Miguel dedicó gran esfuerzo en la investigación y obtención de las piezas que hicieron posible este rescate histórico y cultural de San Cristóbal de Las Casas. Aquí miras, escuchas e interactúas con la historia. ¿Sabías que? Hubo una época en la que en el Parque Central de la ciudad, las flores que adornaban los jardines eran amapolas. Entre sus paredes de adobe de 60 cm de grosor y bajo un techo original de 1820, el en que todavía se observan sus viejas vigas y amarres
de cuero, se vive la metamorfosis de lo que una vez fue Hueyzacatlán. Es un paseo por la historia divertida de los siglos XVI al XXI, en textos ligeros encontrarás datos muy curiosos que te apuesto que desconoces. ¿Sabías que? La primera canción que se grabó en el primer aparato que reprodujo música fue “María tenía un corderito”. En esta fascinante exposición conocerás piezas sumamente raras, es el primer museo de México que exhibe un billete del Banco de Chiapas. En el país sólo existen dos fonógrafos que funcionan y uno de ellos se encuentra en este lugar, tiene una antigüedad de 106 años. Si quieres saber quién fue el primer mexicano que hizo una grabación en la “maquina parlante” visita el museo. Entérate quién fue el primer chiapaneco que se ganó el premio mayor de la lotería. Sabrás sobre la primera bicicleta que llegó a San Cristóbal de Las Casas, el primer telégrafo, la primera función de cine, la primera máquina de escribir de la ciudad, el primer periódico de Chiapas y mucho más. Conoce los diez barrios originales de este pueblo mágico con sus artes y oficios, como la elaboración de productos de hierro forjado en el Cerrillo, pan en San Diego y velas floreadas en La Merced.

alking through its aisles is like taking a literal trip to the past of the Jovel Valley; while listening to the music of the phonograph, you can take a picture of yourself wearing a helmet and a Spanish sword. You can call home to greet using a phone with more than 90 years of age; you can sew with a tiny sewing machine or play a song on the smallest marimba and you may shoot some craft guns created by the hands of sancristobalences (San Cristobal de Las Casas native people). This is a museum from people for the people and all the objects that are displayed at the place work properly. The museum has its origins at the Miguel Muñoz Foundation, it was a project that began as a casual conversation between the Engineer Miguel Angel Muñoz (the museums director and Chronicler of this colonial city) and Dr. Jan de Vos. The young team of the Engineer Miguel devoted so much effort in researching and obtaining parts for the museum and thanks to their efforts, this cultural and historic rescue of San Cristobal de Las Casas was possible. Here you see, listen and interact with

History. Did you know that there was a time in which the city’s Central Park’s flowers that adorned the gardens were poppies? Inside its adobe walls 60 cm thick and under the original ceiling from 1820, in which you can still observe its old beams and leather ties, lives the metamorphosis of what once was Hueyzacatlan. It is a fun ride through the history from the XVI to XXI centuries, in easy texts you will find very curious data that I bet you do not know. Did you know that the first song that was recorded in the first device that played music was “Mary Had a Little Lamb?” In this fascinating exhibition you will see extremely rare pieces; it is the first museum in Mexico that exhibits a bill from the Bank of Chiapas. There are only two operating phonographs in the country and one of them is in this place, it is 106 years old. If you want to know who was the first Mexican to make a recording in the “talking machine” you must visit the museum. Find out who was the first Chiapanecan who won in the lottery. You will know about the first bike that came to San Cristobal de Las Casas, as well as the first telegraph, the first feature film, the first typewriter in the city, the first newspaper in Chiapas and more. Get to know the ten original neighborhoods of this magical town with its arts and trades, such as the elaboration of wrought iron products at El Cerrillo, the baking of bread in San Diego and the flowered candles at La Merced. The first plane and the first car that arrived to San Cristobal de Las Casas; the first traffic regulations that was issued at national level; all the secrets that are behind the name of the city, among other curiosities. SANTO DOMINGO resort Cerca de las faldas del Volcán Tacaná, resguadado por lo alto de las montañas, entre una abundante vegetación, bajo un clima templado y húmedo, se levanta la imponente Casa Grande.
on múltiples las leyendas que encierra esta magnífica edificación al antiguo estilo colonial norteamericano, de finas maderas importadas. Hacer el acenso desde la costa hasta estos altos parajes es una experiencia extraordinaria, en pocos minutos el clima va cambiando, la vegetación se transforma y el paisaje nos regala escenarios que en pocos lugares del mundo se encuentran: enormes cascadas que brotan por encima de colosales piedras, que parecieran haber sido depositadas ahí por gigantes de tiempos míticos. Enrique Braun Henzen J. desembarcó en Guatemala en el Puerto de Champerico, en compañía de su hermana Eva Braun. Cuando llegó en 1911 a las tierras de la finca Santo Domingo, ahí se producía ya el preciado grano de café, gracias a las benéficas condiciones climáticas y del suelo. Fascinado por la naturaleza y prosperidad de aquel terruño, este finquero alemán le compró la hacienda a un español, y en 1920 empezó la construcción de la Mansión Braún, que se finalizó después de nueve años de arduo trabajo.
Braun era un hombre sumamente rígido, hacía trabajar a niños, mujeres y hombres desde el alba hasta el ocaso. Mediante el uso de su propia moneda y una tienda de raya, llegó a acumular una vasta riqueza. La tienda del finquero obtienen su nombre por la sencilla razón de que los campesinos al no saber leer ni escribir sólo colocaban una raya en el libro de nómina. La gente local asocia el nombre de Eva Braun (hermana de Don Enrique), con la que fuera esposa del comandante supremo del Tercer Reich, Adolf Hitler. Los pobladores de la región creen que la construcción de la casa fue ordenada por el soberano del III Imperio Alemán, como obsequio para su pareja. Algunos aseguran que era una ruta alternativa de escape para Hitler y que incluso el lugar fue visitado en varias ocasiones por tan controvertido personaje. Los ancianos de la región, cuentan que Don Enrique Braun tenía pactos malignos con un un hombre llamado Juan: por las noches, éste llegaba a la Casa Vieja vestido de negro, montando un corcel del mismo

color; este obscuro personaje llegaba a entregarle dinero al alemán. Como intercambio por el oro, el finquero entregaba algunas de las cabezas de sus trabajadores. Al rededor de la Casa Braun, se localiza un hermoso jardín, engalanado por un alto árbol de magnolia, con 92 años de vida, único en toda la región, que se sembró al empezar la construcción de la casa. También se observa un gran perol, en el que se preparaba la comida de los agricultores del grano aromático. Al hacer el recorrido por los estrechos pasillos del centro turístico, se observan otros objetos de la época, como dos cajas fuertes en donde el finquero guardaba su dinero y sus documentos importantes. Braun introdujo maquinaria y técnicas alemanas que hicieron prosperar el cultivo del café en la región. Durante el Cardenismo se repartieron tierras de la finca a 187 campesinos creándose el ejido Santo Domingo. Por esta razón Don Erique Braun abandonó la producción del café y se regresó a su lugar de origen. A un costado de la Casa Braun, se encuentran la alberca y el chapoteadero en el que los niños pasan momentos increíbles. La antigua cava, donde Don Enrique guardaba sus mejores vinos, es hoy un minimalista video-bar con una barra internacional. Se dice que a media noche Don Enrique recibía el llamado del diablo y bajaba hasta este lugar donde había un pasadizo secreto, un túnel que terminaba en la piedra de Huixtla y con otro brazo que daba a la Piedra Pashtuda, a 40 minutos del la Casa Braun. Los campesinos creían que este pacto con el mal era la fuente de su riqueza. Otro de los misterios que envuelven la Casa Grande, es que por las noches un fantasma habita el Centro Turístico. Lo que antes fuera el salón de reuniones de negocios de Erique Braun, actualmente es un Museo del Café. There are many legends enclosed by this magnificent building built in the ancient American colonial style full of fine imported woods.

The company store at the farm got its name from the simple reason that peasants only placed a line in the book list, due to the reason that they did not know how to read or write. Local people associate the name of Eva Braun (sister of Don Enrique), to the wife of whom was the supreme commander of the Third Reich, Adolf Hitler. The people of the region believe that the construction of the house was ordered by the ruler of the III German Empire as a gift to his couple. Some people even say it was an alternative escape route for Hitler and that the place was even visited several times by this controversial character.
oing the ascent from the coast to these high places is an extraordinary experience. Within minutes the climate changes, the vegetation transforms and the landscape shows us scenarios that are seen only in a few places around the world: huge waterfalls that flow over colossal stones, which appear to have been placed there by giants from mythical times. Enrique J. Braun Henzen landed in Guatemala at the Port of Champerico, in the company of his sister Eva Braun. When he arrived, back in 1911, to the lands of the farm Santo Domingo, there the precious coffee bean was already produced, thanks to the beneficial weather and soil conditions. Fascinated by the nature and the prosperity of that native land, this German farmer bought this plantation from a Spaniard and in 1920 he began building the Braun Mansion, which was completed after nine years of hard work. Braun was a very rigid man, he made children, women and men work from dawn to dusk. By using its own currency and a company store called “de raya” (of a line),
The elders of the region, say that Don Enrique Braun had malignant pacts with a man named Juan (John), at night, he arrived to the Casa Vieja (Old House) dressed in black, riding a horse of the same color; this dark character came to give money to the German. In exchange for the gold, the farmer gave him back the heads of some of his employees.
Around the Braun House, there is a beautiful garden, adorned by a large magnolia tree, 92 years old; it is unique in the region, this tree was planted at the beginning of the construction of the house. We can also observe a large pot in which the food of the farmers of this aromatic grain was prepared. When doing the journey through the narrow corridors of the resort, there are other objects from those times, such as two safes where the farmer kept his money and his important documents. Braun introduced German machinery and techniques that made the coffee cultivation in the region thrive. During Cardenas’ Presidential Term some land belonging to the farm were distributed to 187 farmers creating the ejido (common land) Santo Domingo. That is the reason why Don Enrique Braun abandoned coffee production and went back to his birth place. Next to the Braun House we can find the pool and wading pool where children spend incredible time. The old cellar, where Don Enrique kept his best wines, nowadays it is a minimalist video- bar with an international bar. It is said that at midnight Don Enrique received the call of the devil and he used to go down to this place where a secret passageway existed, a tunnel that ended at Huixtla’s Stone and with
other arm facing the Pashtuda Stone, 40 minutes away from the Braun House. The peasants believed that the source of his wealth was due to this pact with the devil. Another of the mysteries involving the Great House is that at night there is a ghost that lives at the resort. What it used to be Enrique Braun’s business meeting room, is now a Coffe Museum. On its walls the story of the grain lies from its beginnings to its development at the Soconusco region. There are Displayed some of the first objects that accompanied the creation of fortunes with the aromatic planting. Here you will learn the process that is behind this strong aroma, good body and delicious flavor that only a cup of Santo Domingo’s coffee can provide. The traditional gastronomy is grilled food that is served in the traditional brazier, at the center of your table where it awakens your five senses: you can see and hear how the rich beef, the bacon, the chorizo (traditional regional sausage) and the longaniza (another traditional regional sausage), seasoned with green peppers and onions, finish their cooking in front of you; their delicious aroma whets the appetite and the braces provide a pleasant warmth in the mild afternoon. I assure you, that your body will thank you for such succulent food that from the second floor you can delight while you enjoy the unique scenery at 800 meters over the sea level. The Santo Domingo Tourist Center is where all the fun begins: doing the guided tours around the coffee farms and the fascinating architectural jewels of European style (product of the wealth that these trees provided); also by visiting the many waterfalls, such as Muxbal and Chocoyera. The center is a necessary step to eat and to rest on your ascent to the summit of the Tacana volcano which is over 4000 m high. The parking lot is reached by a path of palm trees, which also leads to the coffee mill, a construction from those times German made that nowadays is another attraction to the place. Las Ruinas del Templo y Ex Convento de SANTO DOMINGO DE GUZMÁN PIEDRAS QUE CUENTAN SU HISTORIA n la tierra de Okjamü, (“Sol del norte” en zoque), destaca en el corazón del verde valle, el majestuoso Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzmán. Sin importar sus heridas por las largas batallas contra el tiempo, hoy cada una de las piedras de esta magnífica edificación colonial nos relatan su historia. Desde tiempos inmemorables, en estas tierras se encontraba uno de los más importantes centros zoques. Durante el reinado del sangriento emperador azteca Ahuízotl, los nativos fueron sometidos por este pueblo guerrero que nombró a la región como Tecpatlán, que en náhuatl significa “Lugar de pedernales”, castellanizándose el nombre hasta quedar en su estado actual. Con la conquista española, los frailes dominicos decidieron concentrar en el lugar a cinco pueblos cercanos y erigir ahí un convento. Bajo la dirección de Fray Antonio de Pamplona, los indígenas fueron obligados a trabajar para la construcción de esta fascinante joya arquitectónica. Los zoques acarreaban las piedras por una distancia de 4 km con la técnica de cadena humana, en la que

eran colocados en fila y pasaban de mano en mano las piedras que hoy se forman parte de este imponente lugar. Fue el octavo convento que se construyó en los territorios de Chiapas y Guatemala. Cuando se terminó de edificar le fueron otorgadas cuatro campanas y también fue construida una Picota (una columna de 1.5 m de alto y ancho), donde atormentaban a los pecadores que faltaran a misa tres domingos. Este complejo católico está integrado por una iglesia y el ex convento con un patio interior, más un huerto. Anteriormente había una gran ceiba que se creía que era contemporánea de esta edificación. El Templo de Santo Domingo (edificación colonial de más de 400 años de antigüedad) es de una sola nave, su arquitectura es una alquimia de los estilos mudéjar, renacentista y barroco, con una torre de diseño único que mezcla elementos españoles y árabes. La torre del campanario tiene bóveda de estilo gótico, a los pies de ella se encontraba la piedra bautismal, hoy recostada en una de sus altas paredes descansa en pedazos al ser destruida por los saqueadores que creían que bajo ella se encontraban tesoros.

n the land of Okjamü, (“Northern Sun” in Zoque), stands in the heart of the green valley, the majestic Temple of Santo Domingo de Guzman. Regardless its wounds from the long battles against

time, today each of the stones of this magnificent colonial buildings tell us its story. Since immemorial times, in this land it was located one of the most important Zoque centers. During the reign of the bloody Aztec emperor Ahuizotl, the natives were subdued by these warriors who named the region Tecpatlan, which in Nahuatl means “place of flints” which latter adopted the Spanish form of the name as we currently know it today. With the Spanish conquest, the Dominicans decided to concentrate five near-

Sundays. This complex consists of a Catholic Church and a former convent with a courtyard, plus a garden. Previously there was a large silk-cotton tree that is believed to be contemporary to this building.
The Temple of Santo Domingo (a colonial building over 400 years old) has a single shed; its architecture is alchemy of Mudejar, Renaissance and Baroque, with a uniquely designed tower that blends Spanish and Arabic elements. The bell tower has a Gothic vaulting, at the bottom of it the baptismal was located and now it is laying in one of its high walls in pieces after being destroyed by looters who believed inside it there were treasures. Next to the temple the former convent is located; it protects a beautiful collection of sacramental silverware that was produced in Chiapas and Guatemala during the colonial era. The inner courtyard is surrounded by half
point arches, with columns with Mannerist details and a roof with Mudejar style. It was in 2001 and under the supervision of INAH this historic relic was restored. La Melcocha es un producto artesanal introducido hace muchos años por los españoles, que en tierras mexicanas la gente le da su propia identidad en la presentación e ingredientes. Se prepara a base de panela (elaborada con miel de caña de azúcar) la cual se disuelve en agua en un perol al fuego. Después de que se disuelve, se forma un líquido espeso de color café obscuro al que se le agregan unas gotitas de limón y se hace pasar por un colador de manta.
