ABOUT SDBM SDBM

I had never imagined nor understood how debilitating a skin disease could be, until it affected me.

Skin Deep Behind the Mask is a not for profit organisation dedicated to supporting sufferers of all types of skin diseases by helping to manage their condition and symptoms. It also aims to educate and raise awareness of the difficulties skin disease patients face and the impact it can have on their families and loved ones.

My condition was immediately visible to the outside world. The obvious physical affects invited prejudice because of my appearance; something I found modern society places increasing importance on. This was in addition to the consequences of long-term hospitalisation, enforced job losses and the substantial ramifications on personal relationships. Unlike some illnesses, so little is known and discussed when it comes to skin diseases.

We are grateful for your time and your kind consideration to donate or sponsor to SDBM.

Thank you.

I am told my condition has no specific name and is incurable. More research and information is needed for sufferers and carers. Greater publicity will help break down prejudices and overcome ignorance to help others understand that beyond the obvious effect on physical appearance, skin disease can cause serious physical pain, distress and incapacity.

WHY FUND SDBM? Case Studies The first is a young Chinese girl by the name of Wan Lao Yang. The other two are teenage siblings: Josh and Sarah Thurmond from Detroit, Michigan. So extreme were their cases, they were respectively televised on Sky Living (“Living without Skin”). Wan Lao She suffers from Xeroderma Pigmentosum, a rare and incurable genetic disorder that makes exposure to the sun, or any UV light, extremely dangerous. Sufferers rapidly develop skin crusting, scarring and cancer. But as the saying goes: a picture is worth a thousand words. Josh and Sarah suffer from a rare genetic disease called Epidermolysis Bullosa (or EB for short), which causes the skin to blister and fall from their bodies. Sadly, to date, there is no cure for it. They, and others with the same illness, are sometimes called ‘Butterfly Children’ because their skin is so delicate like a butterfly’s wings. When Josh was born he looked as though he had third degree burns. His parents say that a great deal of caution had to be taken when lifting him, as there was a danger that layers of his skin would be removed. It was clear how much pain he was in as a baby. Out of the two siblings Sarah’s case is more severe. However, Josh’s wounds cover his arms, shoulders and hands. It takes him around two hours to dress his wounds everyday. The constant scaring around his hands has caused them to fuse together. Seeing Josh wearing a number of layers to cover his

body, and gloves to cover his hands, reminded me that Shabana had to do exactly the same. The introduction saw an image of Sarah’s back. Some would be shocked, but I was far to familiar with the reality of such conditions. Sarah practically had most of her back covered with open wounds. It was raw, it was red and extremely weepy. Sarah has undergone a number of skin graft operations using skin from babies’ foreskins. Unfortunately, the funding for this treatment has run out. This is one of the reasons the documentary was made, as at the time of filming Sarah was undergoing her last operation.

A mother, whose two children died from EB, explains vividly what it’s like to live with this disease.

‘In chronic pain sufferers endorphins are produced by the body to switch off pain. But in doing so a double- in the struggle to retain energy.

‘Try to imagine your own body covered with open wounds’ wounds that are much like burns, but they never go away. These children always hurt. They never know a day without pain.’

The brain responds in two ways to this kind of pain:

Lynn Anderson – EB Medical Research Foundation

Professor Anthony Jones – Pain Specialist, Hope Hospital, Manchester UK

The life expectancy of an EB sufferer is estimated to be between twenty and thirty years. In this time they are in constant pain. Doctors have discovered that individuals that are exposed to long periods of pain develop a high tolerance to it.

1. Physically – responding to the affects of injury 2. Emotionally – responding to the anxiety of the injury

MASQUERADE BALL AND FASHION SHOW Masquerade Ball evening Skin Disease can effect a person’s self-esteem and self-confidence

Fashion Budding fashion designers are organising and producing a unique fashion show for this event.

The Mask will allow everyone to look the same and perhaps feel the same exhiliration of anonymity. An evening where beauty is not only skin deep but also behind the mask.

Months of research, preparation and hard work has already been undertaken in preparing the collections. Like skin disease, fashion and textiles are very much about touch, feel and of course, the visual impact. A fashion show will be he perfect platform to promote SDBM’s message about skin awareness.

Art and Creativity is very close to the heart of SDBM. We firmly believe that through Art much can be understood about skin disease and illness.

Our charity is already exploring Art and Creativity in children by providing opportunities to design and create fictional characters and write poems to help them and other children better understand the plight of sufferers off all ages.

An Art installation depicting the various stages of some skin diseases will be exhibited at the event. This installation has been created by a respected artist and designer who has themselves suffered from chronic skin disease for many years. A Visual Diary produced by our design team will provide a normally unseen view into the life of a skin condition sufferer and so will show what it is like to manage their illness. The Event will also see the fruition of the ‘Mala’ Exhibition comprising of a unique and varied collection of mannequins. These would have been decorated to represent personalities to help illustrate the qualities that define an individual besides the ‘skin’ seen on the outside.

DONATIONS

The mannequins will be placed around London to raise awareness of skin diseases.disease.
