Dear AWEPA members, As the Head of the AWEPA-Spain Section, it is my job to welcome you and thank you. “Welcome” to all the members of AWEPA attending this Governing Council meeting and “thank you” to AWEPA-EUROPE, and its President, the Honourable Ms. Miet Smet in particular, for her trust in accepting our suggestion to carry out meetings in Spain and, concretely in the city of Barcelona. We have prepared for these two days with a lot of excitement. We hope that the meetings will be fruitful and that, despite the shortness of your stay, you will have the chance to get to know this city, which is very hospitable and is honoured to receive visitors as distinguished as you, members of AWEPA, a European institution that works for democracy, human rights and freedom in the African Continent.

AWEPA was founded in 1984 by European parliamentarians to help Nelson Mandela in his fight against Apartheid. After the Apartheid regime was overthrown in South Africa ,and at Nelson Mandela’s behest, AWEPA continued its work to consolidate human rights, strengthen democracy and develop international cooperation in Africa. To accomplish these goals:
AWEPA’s activities promote, among others things, the realisation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), and now the Sustainable Development Goals, including the reduction of poverty, especially among women and children.
Logically, the principles that AWEPA embraces through its programmes also include those which can be found in sport, such as training, coexistence, respect...
Mandela used sport as an element of integration in his fight against Apartheid and now, by mutual agreement, AWEPA and the MUSEU OLÍMPIC JUAN ANTONIO SAMARANCH have decided to pay homage to the man who led this war to ensure that, in SouthAfrica and in the African continent as a whole, humans rights reach all inhabitants.
Nelson Mandela’s life and his leadership are also connected to the world of sport and the Olympic Movement, as can be seen in the Mandela exhibition.

As you know, we have been exploring the possibility that the Museu Olimpic Juan Antonio Samaranch of Barcelona can host a MANDELAÂAWEPA space. Finally, I am deeply satisfied to communicate you that this has been very successful and that the Honourable City Council of Barcelona has approved the cession of a space in the Museu which will be called "SPACE MANDELA-AWEPA" We must thank the City Council of Barcelona and the management from the Museu Ollmpic for their help and support. I use this occasion to invite you to the inauguration of this space which will take place on the 23rd of March at 17:00 hours with the presence of fhe President of AWEPA EUROPA the Honourable Ms. Miet Smet.

Dear friends,
I address you highlight that today. like every 25th May, we celebrate the DAY OF AFR.ICA, commemorating the foundation of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), known today as the African Union (AU), in 1963.
On a day like today, 32 leaders of African states met in Addis Abeba to create the OAU, an organization whose goal was to promote unity and solidarity between the African states; serve as the collective voice of this continent; eraqicate colonialism; and promote international cooperation. / Nowadays there is still much to do to reach peace and end war in Africa.
Children, young people, elderly people and whole families are livin91rn abject poverty while others (always a minority) swim in w�lth. This is an Africa where social inequalities are immense. We must, day to day, think about this ugly truth. Today, in joining this celebration we show our determination to make a continent which is more human, more decent for everyone and, above all, more fair. With a fairer Africa will make t a better world. AWEPA-Spain adheres strongly in this annual celebration to reach
Africa.

Parliamentarians from around the world presented initiatives for the eradication of discrimination
and xenophobia. Speeches were given by UN representatives, and members of the National
Assembly of Ecuador, the Legislative Assembly of Costa Rica and the Spanish Senate, including Hon. lfiaqui Anasagasti, member of the Spanish AWEPA Section.
The Forum was organised as part of the World Conference AFROMADRID 2015, an event which
ran from 15 to 19June, and received support from Hon.Josep Maldonado, Head of the Spanish

As part of its celebrations of Africa Day 2016, the Spanish AWEPA Section held an informal breakfast meeting with African Consuls in Barcelona, Spain, on 31 May 2016.
The meeting was designed promote knowledge sharing and cooperation between AWEPA members and the African Consuls, through discussions on current issues affecting the African continent. It provided an opportunity to share viewpoints, concerns and assessments regarding Africa, its great cultural richness and diversity, its beauty, and its needs. The Section also made the most of this opportunity to pay tribute to a much loved person, friend and Consul known for his kindness, his profound respect for Africa and, above all his sense of solidarity: Mr. Joan Ramon PallĂ s, Honorary Consul for the Republic of Malawi.
During the month of October, AWEPA's first Breakfast with the Hon. Ambassador of Green Cape in Spain, Mr. Mario Ferreira Lopes Camรถes, took place at the Palace of the Senate (Madrid) with the presence of Deputies and Senators members of AWEPA. This is the first in a series of breakfast that will take place in Madrid with other Ambassadors from African Countries, which
will alternate with breakfast with the members of the
African Consular Corps in Barcelona.
With this event we give you a small summary of some of the activities that have been carried out by the AWEPA Spain Section.
