News from independent publishers of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation (Belgium)

Building on the success of its three previous issues, Belgo Comics is back in 2022 to present the latest publications of the independent publishing houses from the French-speaking community of Belgium. These publishers are proud of the originality of their catalogue and of the specificity of their readers. They share common points:  a vision of their profession as being a demanding cultural operator, concerned above all with the development of the art of comic strips, in all its diversity;  an unfailing curiosity, a concern to experiment, to explore the limits of the medium, to connect it with other arts, or to enhance its heritage;
 attention to the quality of the works, their content, but also their material aspect. These publishers offer a large majority of long-term publications, for which interest is maintained over time; an international outlook, through editorial partnerships and the publication of authors from various countries, while remaining firmly rooted in Belgian cultural reality.
Micro-edition has a strong presence too in this edition of Belgo Comics, with a pool of dynamic and changing collectives. Their fanzines and book objects, whose core content is focused on drawing and narration, are the witnesses of an innovative creation always concerned with moving lines. Bruno Merckx Head of the Comic books and Children’s literature Department at the Ministry of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.

The BLOW BOOK is a new window of expression, in small format and at a low price. The author is in charge of his publication from front to back cover. He also oversees the artistic direction and thus makes his mark. The BLOW BOOK format as well as its first content was conceived by Alfred Mazure, the author of BLOW BOOK #1: JIU-JITSU. The book, the size of a deck of cards, fits in a pocket and can be passed from hand to hand. Its format is neither that of a COMIC BOOK, nor a FUMETTI, nor a MANGA, nor a MANHUA, nor a GRAPHIC NOVEL… No label can reduce it to a specific genre or audience. There are no collection guidelines other than the physical limits of size and paging: 7.6 x 11.6 cm, 224 pages. Eight titles are available, notably via a network of vending machines.

JEAN BOURGUIGNON
MAXIME GILLOT
JEAN-MICHEL MEYERS, PHILIPPE CAPART, LUCIEN DE ROECK
A book where the reader is the sole protagonist of his own story. Quentin Roux’s first silent creation, with coloring by Dimitri Piot (author of BLOW BOOK #2: SALARYMAN) and Manuel at the maieutic (author of BLOW BOOK #4: AU TRAVAIL).
Suicide can be the work of an entire life. A voluble account in which Jean Bourguignon removes any trace of reality in his fiction. Or is he removing any trace of fiction in his reality?
Maxime Gillot’s first publication slips our eye into an electric pinball machine. A narrative made legible by the juxtaposition of images. Life as well as meaning are held by movement. A silent science fiction story.

FORGERIES - EN 3000 ÉDITIONS
Our desire to publish comes from the will to put collective dreams on paper, stories to (better) live together, narratives of hope which will help us to inhabit this world differently. Using fiction allows us to escape the real, to make room for imagination and to reinvent both reality and the present time. En 3000 éditions stirs up our ideas and our possibilities; it’s not about denouncing or fleeing the world’s upheaval. We must make proposals, invent stories and project ourselves into the future to take a different look at the present.
La Grande Utö ÉLÉONORE SCARDONI
Utö emerged from the water a long time ago. Today, new settlers have come to visit it. These visitors will be affected body and soul. They’ll have no other choice than to transform, to fit in the landscape, because, in the island within, life exists. On this island, the deafening silence of the deserted sceneries intermingles with the voiceless tumult of the story’s protagonists.

MAISON AUTRIQUE
Maison Autrique, Victor Horta’s first building of note, is a milestone in Brussels’ architectural heri tage. For a century, it remained a private dwelling. Maison Autrique owes its complete restoration and opening to the public to comics. Indeed, the imagery of “The Obscure Cities” series created by F. Schuiten & B. Peeters presided over the rebirth of the building. Based on this specific example, we have designed publications dedicated to cultural heritage in all its forms, seen through the lens of the comic book medium.

In the trepidation of the journey, in the smoke, in the wind and rain that crosses the cabin, we become completely one with the engine, we see the energy that moves these heavy trains. And it is then at the same time a wonder, a frightening fascination and an immense admiration for these lords of the railways.
Kronikas is a territory that shows itself, cities that explore their past and question their future, with the constant concern of sharing with as many people as possible what brings us together. Awareness of the value of heritage in comics must be in all its diversity. Our mission is to cover all the facets of this heritage.
