News from independent publishers of the WalloniaBrussels Federation (Belgium)

Building on the success of its two previous issues, “Belgo Comics” is back in 2021 to present the latest publications of the independent publishing houses from the French-speaking community of Belgium. These publishers are proud of the originality of their catalogue and of the specificity of their readers. They share common points:  a vision of their profession as being a demanding cultural operator, concerned above all with the development of the art of comic strips, in all its diversity;  an unfailing curiosity, a concern to experiment, to explore the limits of the medium, to connect it with other arts, or to enhance its heritage;
 attention to the quality of the works, their content, but also their material aspect. These publishers offer a large majority of long-term publications, for which interest is maintained over time; an international outlook, through editorial partnerships and the publication of authors from various countries, while remaining firmly rooted in Belgian cultural reality.
Micro-edition has a strong presence too in this edition of “Belgo Comics”, with a pool of dynamic and changing collectives. Their fanzines and book objects, whose core content is focused on drawing and narration, are the witnesses of an innovative creation always concerned with moving lines. Bruno Merckx Head of the Comic books and Children’s literature Department at the Ministry of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.

For the past ten years, Tétshim and Frank Mukunday have been creating ― with raw materials (pebbles, chalk, rusty objects) ― a formal universe that fits their purpose. Machini pays homage to their town, the mining city of Lubumbashi. It reveals the deadly consequences of mineral exploitation and tells about the pollution and destruction of man by man in the mine area bordering the city. This bright-coloured first book is the result of an investigation led by two French students on Brussels’ endangered local language, a city they just recently moved to. We meet with a series of colourful characters who defend an inexorably disappearing language, as the authors tell the complex story of a trilingual country in which Brussels holds a special place.

Our desire to publish comes from the will to put on paper collective dreams, stories to (better) live together, narratives of hope, which will help us to live in different ways on the planet. Through fiction, it is possible to escape the real, to make some space for imagination and to reinvent both reality & present
time. En 3000 édition (In year 3000 edition) tosses our ideas and our possibilities around; it’s not about denouncing or fleeing the cracks of the world. We must propose, invent stories and project ourselves into the future in order to have a different perspective on the present.

From this emerges a deep sincerity, at times disarming or mysterious.
