WHAT IS MATCH RACING? Match racing is the greatest show on water! It is a competition that places two boats, experienced skippers and crews against each other in a great sailing duel, from which there is only one winner. There is no second place. Crews sail against each other in two identically matched boats up to 40 feet in length. Match racing also has its own set of rules, which are subtly different from fleet racing rules. The competition is tremendously exciting to participate in. The crews are aggressive in their strategy and the boats stay close to each other with collisions coming thick and fast. To resolve the inevitable disputes, Match Racing uses onthe-water-umpires to hand out ‘instant justice’. #everymovecounts in match-racing

THE START IS CRITICAL

4-minutes before the start the boats enter the starting area and begin an intricate, furious pre-start duel, with the two boats engaging in a furious oneon-one battle to gain the controlling position on the race course. At the starting signal the boats will cross the start line and begin the first windward leg to the windward mark.

WINDWARD LEG

On the course the boats commence an upwind battle; the lead boat will try to position themselves between the other boat and the windward mark and spill turbulent air from their sails onto them to slow the boat behind. A furious tacking duel may to ensue with the latter trying to force a crew error to rob their aggressor of the advantage. The end of the first windward leg provides an opportunity for the trailing boat to seize the edge by trying to create an inside overlap at the mark, forcing the leader to give room which usually means relinquishing their lead.

DOWNWIND RUN

On the downwind run the trailing boat has a chance to attack from behind, positioning itself so it’s spinnaker casts a wind shadow over the leader. To escape, the boat ahead may gybe away, creating heart-pounding onboard action - and spectacular sailing - as each crew manoeuvres furiously to attack and defend.

FIRST LEG UPWIND THIRD LEG UPWIND

WINDWARD MARK

FINAL LEG DOWNWIND SECOND LEG DOWNWIND DROPPING THE SPINNAKER

At the leeward mark the same overlap rules apply and the action intensifies as crews drop their spinnakers and prepare the boat for the next windward leg while the skippers jostle for the best position around the mark.

TO THE FINISH

The race will last two or sometimes three laps before the boats head for the finish line (same as the start line) where the battle ends. Often the race will go all the way to the line with neither boat giving up until the winners coloured flag (blue or yellow) is flown from the signal boat.

SCAN THIS CODE TO WATCH THE VIDEO GUIDE

GENERAL RULES When the wind comes across the boats on opposite sides, the boat with the wind on the left (port) side must give way to the boat with the wind on the right (starboard) side. When the wind comes across the boats on the same side and they are not overlapped, the boat behind (clear astern) must keep clear of the boat (clear) ahead. When the wind comes across the boats on the same side and they are overlapped, the boat on the windward (upwind) side must keep clear of the other leeward (downwind) boat. Umpires follow each race and make instant penalty decisions. A green and white flag means no penalty but a yellow or blue flag means the boat in the match with the corresponding flag flying on the back of their boat must take a penalty before finishing. A penalty turn when sailing towards the wind means turning the stern of the boat through the wind and when sailing away from the wind a penalty is taken when the boat turns the bow through the wind.

2013 TOUR CARD HOLDERS The Tour Card system is a means to provide event promoters with access to a consistent pool of the world’s top match racers and this year demand for the Tour Cards has remained very high. This ensures high quality racing at events but at the same time, a regular group of skippers allows the Tour to build profiles via PR, media messaging and television coverage. The level of interest this year is outstanding, proving that the Tour provides first class competition and exceptional value to sailors and sponsors. The 2013 season will consist of six stages and teams will count results from their best five events, including their result at the final event, towards the championship. Invitations to the first six events will be guaranteed for Tour Card Holders and invites to the final event will be taken from the leader board after the penultimate event, adding pressure on the Tour Card skippers to perform. Other non Tour Card skippers will also have the opportunity to compete on the Tour through wild card entries to events or by competing at qualifying events for each of the official Tour stages.

ABOUT LOTUS Lotus are pioneers. Lotus have never played by the rule book, instead they have redefined it. Throughout the company’s sixty year history, innovation on road and track has been central to Lotus’s success. At the root of its DNA is Colin Chapman’s obsession with lightweight, and so it continues: “Simplify, then add lightness,” was his philosophy, way before minimalism became a high street term. “Adding power makes you faster on the straights, subtracting weight makes you faster everywhere.” The most traditional Lotus solution is the one with the least parts effectively deployed. These days, Lotus’s expertise in lightweight architecture has enabled it to be a leader in green vehicle technology. This is critical for the times we live in. But Lotus’s raison d’être remains performance and driving pleasure. This uncompromising quest for excellence, no shortage of sporting laurels, and a visionary attention to aesthetic style has made Lotus one of the most inspirational British brands, and among the very strongest in the automotive industry. It stands for passion, individuality, and gritty determination. For more information on LOTUS, visit www.lotuscars.com
