Wodonga company to the rescue

Hangin’ in there By KRYSTEN MANUEL

A WODONGA crane company operator helped save the day when a paraglider in Bright accidently landed in a tree near Mystic Hill and was suspended 16 metres off the ground for five hours on Sunday night. Clever improvisation by police search and rescue resulted in the crane being called in and a jumping castle secured underneath the 27-yearold woman in case she fell. “The gum tree would be about 25 metres tall and the whole top of the tree is dead, Leading Senior Constable Scott Baldock said. “Her parachute caught in those branches and she was left hanging about 16m off the ground. There was nothing underneath her at all - she was left hanging in thin air. Leading Sen Const Baldock said rescuers were concerned that if the woman moved or someone tried to climb up to her, that the branch holding her up might break. “So we decided that we would get whatever we could to put under her so that if she did happen to fall, it would reduce any injuries, he said. “We managed to get some high-jump mats from the local school and a jumping castle from one of the local businesses, which was put under her just in case. Crane operator Bruce Vogt from Dunnes

Twin City Cranes, Wodonga faced an interesting technical challenge on the scene, setting up the 25-tonne crane with its 24-metre reach and box to enable rescuers to safely reach the woman. Business owner Brian Dunn said his team was “happy to go out there and help rescuers with the crane to resolve the situation. Police Search and Rescue Sergeant Vic Velthuis said one of his team manned the crane box and succeeded in securing the paraglider and bringing her down to earth unhurt. The accident was also attended by local police and State Emergency Service crews from Melbourne. Unfortunately, this was not an isolated incident as the region is a popular destination for many experienced and novice paraglider pilots. “We have quite a few of these incidents, I think we’ve had four or five this summer, Leading Sen Const Baldock said. Dawson Paech of Dawsons Rural Supply provided the jumping castle and deemed the inclusion of a jumping castle “a very good idea. “I’m just glad she got out alive, he said. Local take-away businesses also benefited from the show. With all the commotion, surprised locals gathered to watch the woman dangling over the jumping castle, some staying through dinner time and ordering pizzas to be delivered to the scene.

After five hours, the stranded paraglider was finally rescued with the help of a Dunns Crane.

THE longevity of local artist Moira Russell’s work will be guaranteed when Albury council purchases a selection of her watercolour paintings depicting plants in the Botanic Gardens. Mrs Russell was commissioned to paint various species of trees currently growing in the gardens for a display at the Albury LibraryMuseum. She says she’s very proud to have a number of those paintings purchased by council, thus ensuring her paintings survive long into the future. “I am extremely pleased, Mrs Russell said. “I told my husband, one day when I am gone, at least now there’s going to be something to say that I was here. Mrs Russell said the paintings also had a personal value, making the purchase even more special. “I grew up here, I went to school right through Albury Public School and my first year of high school, she said. “My father used to bring us in from out near the weir as a family to the gardens for picnics. Each piece was painstakingly painted in watercolour over a full year to show the complete botanical cycle of the plant. Museum and Social History co-ordinator Bridget Guthrie said council was very pleased to be able to purchase some of the works for their permanent collection. “It is a unique opportunity, she said. “We knew there was a window while the exhibition was up acquiring a couple of works.

WHEN disaster strikes, Australians band together, only too willing to help out a mate, or a stranger across the other side of the country. The tireless work of volunteers never goes unnoticed and it’s good to know our local SES workers have been helping out where needed in recent times. But of course it’s not an unusual occurrence with any emergency service. From the devastating fires in Tasmania, to the disastrous floods in Queensland and NSW, volunteers from all points of the country have rallied to ensure help is available as required. And next time we need the favour returned, those who have recently returned to the Border from the north of NSW will be joined by others, from wherever they can be spared. It’s just the way it works with Australians. So next time you see a volunteer giving their time, whether from the SES, the CFA or whatever the case may be, be thankful chances are they may be assisting you some time in the future, and they could well be from some region you may never have even heard of.

Stopping suicide LOCAL school students have been rewarded for their work in suicide prevention, with The Dramatic Minds Festival Working Party receiving a highly commended award at the inaugural Don Ritchie Suicide Prevention Awards. The Dramatic Minds Festival, held in Albury Wodonga during September 2012 included four participating high schools, each presenting a 10-minute play based on mental health issues. “The Albury High School presentation focused on grief, Corowa High School on anxiety, James Fallon High School on autism and Oaklands Central School on bullying,” Member for Albury, Greg Aplin said. “These plays help to break down the stigma related to mental health issues and they required the students to research the subject matter as part of the development of the plays.” The Dramatic Minds Festival Working Party entered a submission to the Don Ritchie Suicide Prevention Awards and was highly commended by the judges for outstanding work to reduce the number of suicides and attempted suicides in NSW. “The commendation includes $2,000 for the working party to support their work as ambassadors for suicide prevention over the coming year,” Mr Aplin said. The late Don Ritchie, whose generosity of spirit, dedication and compassion saved the lives of hundreds of Australians at The Gap has now been honoured through the naming of these important awards. “I congratulate all involved in this great initiative and look forward to more presentations in the next 12 months,” Mr Aplin said.

FOUR local SES volunteers have returned to the Border after helping out with the storm and flood damage in the north of NSW. Tim Keown, Trish Taylor and Tom Bassett were sent to help with the clean-up effort in the Lismore region after wild storms lashed the area, while Tim Archer applied his experience on social media to the Grafton region for the flood emergency. It was the first time Trish had attended a emergency situation on such a scale and she said she simply felt for those involved. But that’s what she trained for and she didn’t hesitate volunteering for the job. “There’s not much use doing the training if we sit back and say it’s too inconvenient and to go away,” she said. “The little bit of inconvenience to me is so insignificant compared to what the people in Lismore or other areas are going through at that time. I didn’t really know what I was in for but listening to the news stories I think we were let off lightly - I could have been dealing with a lot more had I been in places like Grafton or McLean.” Tim Keown echoed Trish’s words. He said there was also a wealth of experience offered from both those travelling to help and those based in the affected area. “Any time you go away you learn something new and probably teach something as well,” he said. “Even though you work from the same book you may have different ways of doing things that may work better.”

And while the physical assistance is always required Tim Archer said the value of the social media aspect was becoming more understood by the emergency services and the public as a whole. “There are a lot of things we do on social media such as putting out evacuation orders that are quite timely,” he said. “It’s something that’s been too often tacked onto other jobs. At the height of these situations you need one person doing it. There is a growing percentage of people who are relying on social media for information. “We went from something like 85 people who had been reached for the Grafton region’s page in the week preceding the floods to 40,000 unique people who were looking on Facebook for some kind of information. That’s a sizable chunk of people - it’s really becoming a lot more important to be able to get the information out quickly.” Mr Archer added that the favour was often returned, and while the Albury crew had experienced a relatively quite couple of months, volunteers from other areas were always willing to help when the need presented. “About three years ago when we had the really big storms, we had in excess of 300 jobs in the region,” he said. “We had crews come to us from all over the state. Sometimes it’s local, sometimes it’s just down the road and sometimes it’s the other end of the state - we have a volunteer base of around 10,000 that can be mobilised when needed.”

GREATER Hume Shire Council has been offered $48,636 in government funding towards the cost of clean-up and repairs to council’s infrastructure assets following floods in October 2010. Minister for Finance and Services, Greg Pearce said Greater Hume Shire Council was one of 67 NSW councils covered by a natural disaster declaration that affected most of the southern area of the state. “This led to many of the councils seeking funding for emergency works and for repairs to council-owned assets,” Mr Pearce said. “I am sure the community will welcome this financial support from the government to help with debris clean-up from roads, footpaths, parks and other community areas, as well as repairs to vital infrastructure assets. “In the last three financial years, more than $30 million in NSW Government payments have been made to councils to cover the costs of emergency works and damage to council-owned assets across the State.” Member for Albury, Greg Aplin, welcomed the grant, which he said would relieve the community of some of the costs and the financial burden resulting from the floods. “This important grant will help to pay the cost of repairs and replacement of important infrastructure assets in the region,” he said. Under an agreement with the Australian Government, NSW pays for the first $119.7 million of natural disaster infrastructure costs each year. The Australian Government matches NSW expenditure for costs between $119.7 million and $209.5 million and beyond that covers three quarters of all costs.

Committee members Louise Taylor and Leonie June are urging people to get on board and book a site at the Howlong Markets.

To market, to market DO you have a creative streak? Maybe you’ve collected a few bits and pieces over the years you’d like to unload. If so, the latest markets to hit the region could be the place to sell them. Howlong Community Markets committee is encouraging people to participate in their monthly markets, set to kick off on Sunday 17 March. And while it may sound like just another market, the Howlong version will be looking to help charities or other people in need who may not normally receive much assistance. “We feel there are a few causes that don’t receive as much help as they should, committee spokesperson Leonie June said. “We’d like to put the proceeds of the $10 stall price to those, especially things like animal rescue; the CFA is on our list too but also people who may need a new wheelchair or a ramp built at their house who don’t receive much help. The $10 fee covers the site cost for those wanting to set up a stall at the market, which will be set

up at Howlong Golf Club, allowing ample space. So far the committee has taken registrations for about 20 stalls and feel they could comfortably fit 40 on the site, including a jumping castle, face painting and a sausage sizzle which will be run by different organisations each month, which is already booked up to March. “We only put the word out on Facebook recently, Ms June said. “I’m pretty impressed with the response so far. The committee is also looking for the unusual, something a little different to the average market and is encouraging buskers to come along and join in the fun. “It’s a good way to make money out of a hobby but it’s also a good way to meet people, Ms June said. “Plus the money from the stalls goes to help others in the community, so considering it’s only $10 dollars for a site, it’s a cheap way to have fun and help out. For further information on the markets call Leonie June on 02 6026 5305.

Smarts: Yes, we are open! a heap of preservatives. As some would say, Smart’s has been around since Adam was in short pants. Opened in 1966 by Joanne’s mother and father, Fay and Joe Smart. Smart’s Bakery was originally known as Smart’s Cakes. After the move from Mate Street to Wagga Road in 1978, the business grew to include a takeaway section. Joanne and her husband, Tony, took over the business in 1995 and changed the name to Smart’s Bakery, but kept everything else the same. As they say, ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.’ “Dad trained as a pastry cook in Dean Street, moved away and came back realising there was no bakery or cake shop in North Albury and Lavington, so he opened Smarts Cakes. He supplied the local schools from his small retail shop, Joanne said. “I’ve worked with dad since I left school. My husband is a baker and he started working here, so when we took over we made a slight change to the name. “We’ve tried to keep everything to the original recipes and we still buy locally where we can. Smart’s boast that ‘tradition is best,’ with their four most popular items made with recipes traced back to the 60’s and earlier. “The white bread, coffee scrolls, vanilla slice and meat pies – they are how they’ve always been, Joanne said. So if you’re seeking that old-fashioned-goodness, or just believe you deserve a special treat, visit Smart’s Bakery, 391 Wagga Road, Lavington, or call 02 6040 1211 for catering or enquiries.

CONTRARY to popular belief, the iconic Smart’s Bakery, Lavington, is still open and still jam-packed (pun intended) full of delicious delicacies and the best pies on the Border. Walking into Smart’s last week, through the delicious aroma of all things sweet and savoury, I was taken back to my own childhood, when I was treated at Smart’s with coffee scrolls, sausage rolls, monkey faces and caramel slice after school – if I had behaved. I am one of hundreds who feel that familiar, homey warmth when walking into Smart’s. With recipes that date back before the store was opened, even older patrons can enjoy cakes, slices and pastries that taste like they did in the days of the old school yard. “We have the regular people who come in for their bread because they ‘want bread that tastes like bread’, owner, Joanne Duffy said. “We have people who come in whilst on holidays and they often comment ‘your bread tastes like bread from yesteryear!’ “A lot of our customers who come in and like the old fashioned and we have a lot of regulars who were coming in 1966 who still come in the shop. With a wide range of baked goods, Smart’s is known particularly for their pies. “Our pies are our biggest seller, Joanne said. “You can’t go past a pie for lunch. “Canteens biggest seller used to be pies, they seem to be trying to go healthy, “It might be better to have a good old fashioned pie than something with

AS a third-generation foodie, John Miseski brings a real passion to his latest business endeavour Jamaica Blue, Albury. John runs the Albury business with wife Shelley and enjoys carrying on the family tradition. “We chose Jamaica Blue because there was a point of difference,” he said. “Compared to other franchises in this category they really seemed to stand out, were always well presented and offered great coffee and great food.” One of the main attractions of Jamaica Blue is of course the coffee, and John said it was one point that attracted him to the business. “We have a couple of different blends of coffee,” he said. “Our signature blend comes from five countries around the world. We pay premium prices to purchase the best quality beans.” Jamaica Blue also offers a range of food cooked in-house including all-day breakfast. After 18 months in Albury John said the response to the business was incredible. “It’s going ahead in leaps and bounds,” he said. “It’s certainly exceeded my expectations.” Jamacia Blue Myer Centre, Albury Open: From 7am Monday to Saturday and from 8am Sunday.

BILLIE’S CAFE has built a solid reputation based around old-fashioned service, good food and quality coffee, and business owners Susan and Mark Piraner pride themselves on that personal approach. “We’re old school - that’s what we’re about,” Mark said. “Everything is on a first-name basis and we have a bit of fun. Our customers love it.” Billie’s is now offering breakfast from 7am, including the popular eggs benedict or egg and bacon rolls to eat in or take away, all cooked fresh and prepped daily on the premises. Final send-off WHILE many people plan ahead for their retirement through superannuation, they often think little about their final resting place. Everyone wants a decent send-off for their loved one but often the financial restraints cause further grief at a time we need it least. By discussing your future with a financial planner, everything can be taken care of with as little stress as possible. Peter King from DBK Financial Solutions in Wodonga says it is important people begin planning for their future early, whether it be ensuring they have the relevant funds to live a quality life during retirement or planning for those inevitable times when they lose a loved one. “If you can start planning when you first begin work, throwing a little bit into your super, it has to help,” Mr King said. But while investing in super is good practice, often the funds can’t be accessed immediately upon the death of a loved one, leaving the surviving partner or family to find the money for a funeral. “Some of the older generation don’t have the money behind them to cover the cost of a funeral,” Mr King said.

Peter King says it’s important people plan for their future early. “The costs can run into thousands and sometimes their children may not have the funds to cover it either. A lot of people have insurance within their super, but that may take time to come through. “However, a lot of the better super funds or life insurance policies provide a payout to cover the funeral costs within a matter of a few weeks.” Mr King said it was important people checked their insurance policies to understand what they were covered for and if funeral cover was included.

And while some funeral plans may seem excessive, DBK can offer a funeral bond, which consists of an up-front investment and no weekly costs. In fact, it gathers interest for the time of the investment and is paid out to the family after death, or the funeral director can be paid directly from the fund. “They really are a great plan,” Mr King said. “Plus you don’t have to put in a huge amount - even if you put in $4000 to $5000, it’s a good head start.”

Memories to last forever WODONGA cemetery is a place where a loved one can be interred and a memorial can be placed as an enduring tribute to the life of the one who has passed away. It provides a tangible reminder of a life lived and a point of focus for the bereaved. There is a wide choice of sites for the bereaved to choose from such as the monumental, lawn, rose gardens, memorial garden and walls and all inquiries are welcome, whether for burial or placement of ashes. The Wodonga cemetery is administered by the Wodonga Cemetery Trust which was established in 1861 with the land being owned by the crown and managed by the trust for the use of the general public. The trust is reliant upon a volunteer base drawn from the local community to administer the affairs associated with the cemetery and is an integral part of our society. “The general idea of the trustees is to have oversight of everything that goes on in the cemetery as far as the financial returns, general administration of the cemetery, book keeping, and ensuring maintenance is being carried out,” trust chairman Allen Cum-

Allen Cummins, Lia Carle and trust member Graham Gehrig take pride in the work they do at the Wodonga cemetery. mins said. “All the legal paperwork that is involved with burials and placement of ashes is kept on file forever. Our records started in 1861 so we’re probably one of the oldest groups in Wodonga, even older than council.” Trust members are appointed by the Governor in Council with Department of Health Victoria having oversight of cemetery trusts across the state. The Wodonga trust currently consists of a chairman and four trust members. The trust encourages local participation of members of the community with basic

business skills to join the local trust. All sites at the cemetery are held in perpetuity and with records going back to 1861 the trust is often called upon to locate a relative’s resting place as part of genealogy projects, hence the value of having a lasting memorial like those available at the Wodonga cemetery. While it may seem expensive to bury a loved one, Mr Cummins said the work continued on the burial site long after the funeral service was over. “We have to maintain everything here for forever and a day,” he said.

A lasting memorial and tribute to a loved one. The Wodonga Cemetery is a place where a permanent marker of a life lived can be placed and where family, friends and future generations can come to remember and pay respect. Wodonga Cemetery provides a wide range of options to choose from for both ashes and burials, in an attractive setting with Monumental, Lawn and Rose Garden sections available as well as the option of prepaid reservations for future interments. 1062108-JL6-13

Our aim is to create an environment where families can come, reflect, recharge and return to face the world once again.”

Children and grief LOSING someone you love can be a very emotional time. Often adults receive support from friends and family who help the grieved person learn to live with their loss. When a child experiences a loss it is often their first experience of death and can leave profound and long-term feelings of fear and abandonment. Sometimes children try to hide their feelings to try to protect others, causing their grief to be buried in their emotions, only to resurface later on in life. It is important to make sure your response to the child’s grief is appropriate for their age. Reassure children by keeping routines, predictability, create a sense of safety and maintain standards and discipline. Strategies to help younger children overcome the feeling of being overwhelmed include painting, cooking, storytelling, memory box and photo album and allowing the child to tell you about their creation. Older children may find a diary or journal helpful. To grieve is a natural response to loss. By expressing your feelings in a healthy way and showing the child you are trying to understand their feelings, children can feel supported in their time of loss. MERYL Johnson is a prime example of just how integral senior people are to the functioning of our community. Having taken home the Indigo Shire Citizen of the Year Award on Australia Day, Meryl was the only one who was shocked at her win. “I was absolutely flabbergasted, it’s a real honour,” she told NewsWeekly. Despite a long list of achievements, Meryl hasn’t always been the first to put her hand up. “It wasn’t until I’d retired, because I worked full-time and we had our farm and everything,” she said. “When I retired, I thought, ‘I need to give back to the community.’ “So in 2007 I got myself heavily involved in community affairs and worked diligently for them. “I needed to give back to the community because I’d worked in it most of my life, and I needed to do something.” Meryl is on nine committees and has fund-raised hundreds of thousands of dollars across a variety of groups in the community. “I seem to be noted for fund-raising,” she said. “The Beechworth and District Community Bank, to get that up off the ground I was very instrumental. “I have a huge passion for it, so that was a major achievement.” Meryl is also going for understatement of the year- As a member of the Beechworth & District Community Bank Steering committee, Meryl was responsible for raising approximately 50 per cent (approx. $400,000) of the required capital to establish the Bank. During this process Meryl’s contributions enabled the Steering Committee to attract grants of $55,000 for the Beechworth Neighbourhood Kitchen and $250,000 for the upgrade of the Stanley Recreational Reserve. Her efforts have also helped to create five local jobs and an organisation that will be donating at least 80 per cent of its profits back into the Beechworth community for many years to come.

By KRYSTEN MANUEL FOR those eager to learn and who want to enrich their social lives, Age Concern Albury could be just the ticket to enriching your social life, mental health and ability, and even physical fitness. “It’s for any age and it’s a place of friendship - a lot of the people that come, come for the companionship,” committee member, Fay Williams said. Age Concern is a not-forprofit organisation that operates with just 14 staff and 200 volunteers and services older and disabled people and their carers. A very wide range of activities and support services are offered, from neighbour aid and social groups to tai chi and strength training. Open Age Learning, a division of Age Concern, runs specific classes, including: How to use your digital camera. Editing on your computer. Computer courses (beginners and advanced). Scrap-booking and cropping. How to read music and play the piano.

· Creative writing. · Learn how to write

your life story And more! “Some people who come have never done any of these activities at all and they’re really great at them, like myself,” Ms Williams said. “I could never really do any of that and now I do embroidering and card-making. “The elderly are very interested in tai chi to loosen up their muscles and gentle exercises - that’s always booked out.” Open Age Learning sees about 80 people through their doors every term, but it’s not getting them in that’s the problem. “When we do go on holidays nearly everyone in the building is crying because they don’t want us to have a break!” Ms Williams said. “They’ve actually asked us not to have the break for so long. “When they come back, you don’t just greet them, you cuddle them and they say ‘I’m so glad to be back!’ “It’s just a lovely place.”

Calling all Sinners and Saints By KRYSTEN MANUEL THE award-winning Benny Walker is coming to Albury to release his new album “Sinners and Saints.” Walker’s sound is described as ‘an effortless blend of soul, blues, reggae and acoustic folk,’ making for easy listening, carefully and skillfully constructed by an artist with music in his blood. “I was brought up in a musical family, my grandfather, he played in bands, same thing with my dad,” Walker said. “I have always been surrounded by musicians, and I’ve been playing music all my life. “I started playing piano when I was eight, took up guitar at 10 and started my first band when I was 12.” But it was in 2007 that Walker gained the tools to start a music career. “About six years ago I took nine months and travelled around Australia in a camper van, slept in car parks and on beaches. “Everywhere I went I met new people, had new experiences, I took it all in and always had a notepad ready.

“Basically I came out with material to write an album I did in 2008. It really helped me learn how to be ready for when an idea for a song comes along. It gave me grounding for learning how to nurture my songwriting and take all those things in. “On the new album, there’s a song called Enough Is Enough. I was travelling over to the Kimberleys for a couple of gigs in 2011 and the James Price Point thing was in full flight. I’d spoken to locals and I was reading about it and the more I read about it, the more passionate I got about the fact that people were prepared to dig up these beautiful places in order to spin a dollar. So I got inspiration for that and wrote the song Enough Is Enough.” Walker’s talents recently earned him the Victorian Indigenous Performing Arts Award for Best New Talent 2012, Arts Cultural Australia Day Murray Shire Council Award and a 2011 Deadly Award nomination for Most Promising New Talent in Music. Don’t miss your chance to see the release of Benny Walker’s newest album at the Albion, Thursday, 7 February.

Catch The Shane Pacey Blues Trio at the Albion Hotel, 15 February.

For the love of music By KRYSTEN MANUEL

“THE money’s dreadful, so it’s all for love! This couldn’t be truer in every sense of the word for vocalist and bass player of the Shane Pacey Blues Trio, Trudy Mackenzie. “We work together, tour together, record together and travel together, she said. “My husband and I, and our drummer, a friend and a business partner, own a recording studio together. “Shane and I both have different roles in the band. I’m the manager, tour manager, bass player and singer. “My husband, he chooses songs and arranges them. I deal with everything else - publicity and getting work. Of course, one would speculate that this might not be all that it’s cracked up to be - the only girl in the band, stuck doing life with the one person day in and day out, but the truth couldn’t be a sunnier outcome!

“Well, it sounds absolutely sickening but it’s perfectly fine, Trudy said. “We married each other because we’re best friends, so working with each other and doing what we both love is easy - there’s nothing better than to make music with the one you love. “We’ve known each other for over 20 years, so we must be coming up for parole soon! The Shane Pacey Blues Trio was created by Shane Pacey in the hope of organising a band separate to The Cigars, who have been together for over 20 years. He wanted to get back into the music that turned him on when he first started playing. “It’s old-style blues but it has our own take on it - we don’t ever play the same song the same way twice, Trudy said. And it seems Shane had this plan brewing for some time. “I’ve always been known for my voice and one day I said, in a passing comment, ‘one day I’d like to learn the

Box office

bass for fun,’ and the next thing I know, Shane had bought me a bass and a 500watt gig outfit and said ‘learn this’, Trudy said. “So I became the bass player of the trio when I never thought I’d play an instrument. “A girl playing bass does bring a lot of attention, maybe it was something my nearest and dearest planned all along? Audiences can expect quite a unique show from the trio, with many old blues covers, inspired by a huge collection of vinyl, and even some originals cleverly slipped in. “When you come to see the band, you can’t go past Shane’s guitar playing, our drummer is also very good - and easy on the eye - and then you have a female bass player, Trudy said. “So it’s for boys and girls alike! “It’s a great band to come and see both musically and aesthetically. The Shane Pacey Blues Trio will be playing at the Albion Hotel on 15 February. Doors open at 8pm, tickets $10.

Killing Osama with detail By KRYSTEN MANUEL MOVIE: Zero Dark Thirty DURATION: 157mins HIGHLY interesting, I’m sure this one will receive some harsh reviews, as does everything that dares to touch the political. Zero Dark Thirty tells the story of the manhunt for the worlds most wanted man, Osama Bin Laden, spanning over a decade. It tells the story of one woman’s involvement and her significant contribution to the capture of Bin Laden, and of

the intelligence and extreme risk that CIA agents put themselves through. Director/ producer Kathryn Bigalow teamed together with writer Mark Boal was a fantastic combination realistic but carefully crafted to give audiences the full cinema experience that some miss out on when delving so close to a documentary. Local movie-goers, Sarah and Tom told NewsWeekly their thoughts. Sarah: “I liked it. It went for ages though and it got a bit repetitive. It was interesting to find out how the CIA was

working over there, and how long some of them worked on it. Tom: “Well I always like a true story.â€? (Winks). “I did enjoy seeing how they operate over there, and her story was a good perspective to take, although it basically looks like she did it single-handedly and I find that a bit hard to believe. “I wouldn’t see it again, but it was good.â€? Sarah: ďż˝ ďż˝ ďż˝ Tom: ďż˝ ďż˝ ďż˝

Culture close to home By TREVOR JACKSON THE Café Culture Series is back at Art Space Wodonga and this season kicks off with a comedy/ theatre double act Sunday, 10 February. Ventriloquist Sarah Jones will present “Sarah doesn’t play well with others”, a blend of comedy, magic and music including an assortment of puppets. Following an interval Dennis Coard will present a one-man play, “The Umpire Strikes Back! - May the Farce be with you”, the sequel to his successful show “Fall of the Roman Umpire” which was part of the 2010 Café Culture Series. Dennis has incorporated many of the characters from his previous show and will introduce the audience to a host of new ones. He describes his performance as a theatre piece with stand-up comedy as an element. The characters and stories range from the days of his youth in Ireland, migrating to Australia and life along the way. “In a way but it’s about the big things in life that happen,” Dennis said. “My first show was about growing up in Ireland, migrating to Australia, a 20-year career with Telecom, the outback and becoming an actor. It was autobiographical with a lot of other characters coming in along the way – mum, dad, grandad, Maurie Fields, Allan Seale. “In this one I had a bit of a brush with death last year

Dennis Coard will be bringing his spin on life to audiences through a theatrical performance.

which sort of makes you take stock, looking at life, death and mortality but in a light-hearted way through clowning, standup, poetry and music.” Dennis began his acting career at 35 years of age, b ing accepted into the Victorian College of the Arts and said he hadn’t looked back. A six-year stint in the Australian soap Home and Away set the scene for his future career. But it was early in life that Dennis’s career began to take shape. As a 12-year-old imm grant from Ireland trying to fit into high school in Adelaide, he soon developed a knack for accents and has taken that on the road. “The accent is one of the things I cover in the first play,” he said. “The thing a kid wants most in high school is a bit of camouflage. I found I had a bit of an ear for accents so I learnt the Australian accent to give me that camouflage.” Dennis says people attending his play could be assured of an enjoyable experience. In fact he personally guarantees if you don’t laugh or cry you will get your money back. The show begins at 5pm sharp with tickets available for individual shows and discounted seasons tickets on sale at The Cube Box Office or online at www.thecubewodonga.com.au/ tickets For further information phone 02 6022 9311.

Homes&Property â?Żâ?Ż Albury Wodonga

Enzo Raimondo CEO Real Estate Institute of Victoria

Number one for results IF YOU ever wanted to know how much a home sold for, you will have found the REIV is the provider of the most authoritative and timely collation of property sales results in Victoria. Each week the REIV collects and provides for free about 1,000 sales results. This helps to inform buyers, sellers, property professionals, the media and anyone with an interest in the local real estate market. Sales results are provided by REIV members and are rigorously checked before publication. As the reports are provided at the time of the contract of sale being signed, they provide a real time record of the market and are an invaluable source of information. The results are published first on the REIV website about 7pm every Saturday night. They are then updated on Sunday night and again on Wednesday morning. They cease to be

freely available when the next week’s results are published. If you would like to be directly informed about when sales results relevant to you are published you can subscribe to an email alert service. The results are also published by the media on Sunday and throughout the week. The majority of sale results published provide an address, price of sale, date, the real estate agent responsible for the sale, the method of sale, the number of bedrooms and type of property. In a minority of cases the vendor specifically requests that the price not be disclosed or the entire sale. It is also worth noting that if the sale was a private one the exact street number of the property is not published due to privacy restrictions. If you would like to find out more about collection methods, property classifications for the market in general visit www.reiv.com.au

for those on-the-move morning snacks and coffee. But step outside and this stunning home takes entertaining to another level. A large, raised timber deck provides the ideal alfresco dining experience under a pitched roof. The glass-fenced and gated deck offers peace-of-mind and safety for the younger members of the family, while TV and gas points and a pot-belly stove ensure ease of entertaining. Through the gate and down a couple of steps provides access to the well maintained and landscaped yard, with drought-tolerant plants and enough space for the youngsters’ play equipment or the pets to run free. With wide access from the driveway you’ll also have space to house the caravan or boat with ease. Ducted heating and cooling complete this stunning pictureperfect package.

Local Sport

Connecting people and communities

Games are all pressure By TREVOR JACKSON WODONGA’S Sports and Leisure Centre will be alive Saturday night in a Wodonga vs Shepparton clash for the CBL North East Conference basketball grand finals. Both teams will be gunning for victory against the Gators to advance to the state finals the following weekend in Bendigo, something the men missed out on last season. The women made it, but fell down at the final hurdle. According to Lady Wolves coach Doug Polmear his team will face their toughest test of the season against the Lady Gators and will need to bring their best game to the floor to claim victory. The home-court grand final may prove advantageous but Polmear isn’t taking anything for granted, with the team’s two hit-outs against the Lady Gators this season tight. “In the third round we played them with six players and they beat us by seven points, then in the game at home we beat them by six,” Polmear said. “It’s going to be close. They’re a pretty good side. They’re pretty even right across the team and they have individuals who can shoot 15-20 points on any given night. “For us to win, the girls are going to have

to play well.” Polmear said after last week’s six-point victory the girls would have to steady this weekend if they were to progress further. “It’s very important to get the girls a good win,” he said. “If we want to get to Bendigo and win the state final it’s a must because you don’t get a second chance.” The men face the Gators and will be looking to take victory to atone for last year’s shortfall and coach Michael Hickey said the boys were motivated to take victory. “There’s probably only four in the side from last year but it doesn’t matter which group comes through, if you’re playing the team you played the year before, it filters through and they want to beat them,” he said. “The Gators are competitive. The first game we played them we were undermanned and we got over the line. The game we had at home we were still missing two of our top players and we got over the line by five points. “With both teams at full strength it should be a good game but I think we might go a bit deeper off the bench.” Action begins at 6pm with the women’s game followed by the men at 8pm.

But what if there was a machine that could help a morbidly obese person run five kilometres? What if you could run your fastest five kilometres with a fractured pelvis? What if you could walk one week after a knee reconstruction? One of only three clinically owned $60,000 AlterG anti-gravity treadmills offers all of this and is right here on our door-step at Albury Osteopathic Clinic. “I believe the AlterG anti-gravity treadmill is the most exciting and revolutionary exercise and rehabilitation machine seen in our country in decades,” Albury Osteopathic Clinic’s John Baker said. “It has the ability to take the weight off the lower limbs by using the space age technology of differential air pressures to lift your body weight, being able to facilitate down to 20 per cent body weight, hence allowing the lower limbs to work in the way they were meant to work - not in a dysfunctional pattern which you use because of pain or restriction.” The AlterG is most beneficial for rehabilitation because it’s a secure environment you can move in, opening up the possibilities for older people, hip replacements, knee replacements, muscle injury and sprains. So how does it work? The patient puts on the AlterG shorts and zip the shorts into the capsule, creating an airtight chamber from your hips down. Press ‘start’ and your weight is measured, then you decide how much of your weight you want to bear and set the controls for speed and incline. While you are working out, the therapist can watch your gait and mark your progress. “The benefit to sportspeople is that they can keep training while they have an injury,” Mr Baker said. “Rehabilitation is much quicker because

Osteopath John baker swears by his new NASA technology. you have the functional patterns working much quicker and you can have the weight returned to 100 per cent. “We’ve had people come in straight out of their plasters with broken legs and the week after having knee replacements where they can’t even put their foot on the ground. “They come in with crutches, we help them on the machine, take all their weight off down to 25 per cent, and just get them to stand there and feel comfortable. “We’ve had a gentleman on with a stroke who’s learning to walk again, we have very overweight people on just to start to lose weight where they have found it’s too difficult to walk, even people who are overweight and waiting for surgery. “What they’re doing is getting movement into their limbs without having to overcome the ground reaction forces of gravity.” Call Albury Osteopathic Clinic on 6041 3606 for your free 15-minute trial.

The Wolves will be looking to take a double win in the CBL grand final games this weekend.

THE Lady Bandits have this week announced a new coach to take the reins for the 2013 SEABL season. James Ballinger, who comes highly recommended by former Lady Bandits coach Kennedy Kereama, brings extensive experience from New Zealand with stints as head coach of the Junior Tall Ferns, finishing runners-up in the FIBA Oceania Youth Championships in November 2012 and head coach of the North Harbour under 21 side who won the New Zealand national championships in the same year.

“Given we have clear aspirations for the women’s program going forward we wanted to ensure that we made the right appointment,” club president Michael Mack said. “Importantly, we also need an individual that can inject enthusiasm and enjoyment back into our women’s team after some tough times so we can make inroads into becoming a competitive force again in SEABL women’s basketball.” With the new coach now locked in, announcements on player signings will follow.
