Albury Wodonga’s largest circulating newspaper

Carnivale in full colour CARNIVALE is back with all the colour and splendour we’ve become accustomed to from Wodonga’s biggest annual street party. For further details and pictures, turn to page 8.

Bounty for refuge THANKS to a front page article in a recent edition of NewsWeekly and a $1000 kick start from the Buddah Shop, the Kangaloola Wildlife Sanctuary has welcomed approximately $4500 in donations, several dedicated volunteers and a new wombat shelter. And it doesn’t stop there. Owner, Glenda Elliot, said that since the article there has been no more cases of abused or mutilated animals that have come their way, and with more wary eyes on the area, hopefully it will stay that way. “There’s quite a lot of mountain bikers that ride through the bush, everybody in the Stanley Forrest are keeping their eyes out because they’re all disgusted with the shooters,” she said. Ms Elliot said donations have come in all forms and amounts, and just when the sanctuary really needed it. “Some people came out the other day and donated $1500 and another man donated another $1000, then Gary Hayward and Andy Stevens donated $1000 and people have came out and given smaller amounts and cheques.” Owner of the Buddah Shop, Gary Hayward, was pleasantly surprised when a local shopper matched his original donation of $1000. “He’s an animal lover and he loved the story,” Mr Hayward said. Ms Elliot said she has even had a few volunteers come out to lend a hand and lighten the load.

“One lady, Kath, is fantastic, she has been out for three days and it’s just made such a difference, she’ll give anything a go. “Then we have a young fella here now who is willing to work.” The humble owners of Ranbuild in Wodonga have also decided to help Kangaloola out, with a donation of a roof and frame for a new wombat shelter. “I’ve known Glenda for a long time and we try and help her out where we can,” owner, Mitch Huon said. “It’s fantastic, the work she does, it’s amazing. “If the community had to pay for the amount of work that Glenda does, it would be an absolute fortune. She works night and day. “Donating a little bit of stuff is a very small contribution compared to what she does.” A local mountain biking club has also donated their time and constructed the shelter last weekend. But it’s an ongoing battle for Ms Elliot and the animals at Kangaloola and donations of what ever can be given will be met with open arms. Ms Elliot also urges people to keep talking about what goes on out in the bush. With a baby joey having been dragged behind a car not even a month ago, keeping your eyes out for offenders has never been more important. “Be warned,” Ms Elliot said, “you’re being watched!”

Bikkie the joey and Little Missy the baby wombat, holding tight for more Border generosity.

ACCORDING to a Wodonga police sergeant, opportunistic crime in our community is somewhat preventable. Many of these crimes, classed as high-volume crimes, are only taking place because of forgetfulness, or maybe carelessness by members of the community - leaving car or home windows open or unlocked. It is interesting to note this police officer suggested over 99 per cent of these crimes showed no evidence of forced entry. That’s a staggering figure. Having spoken to a victim of crime recently it was again interesting to note the victim simply wouldn’t allow the thief to beat him, continuing on with his normal day to day activities. But the damage had already been done and valuable items were lost. Obviously there are many crimes, such as the above mentioned, where forced entry is evident, but for those where no evidence exists, why make it easier for thieves to have their way? The police officer said those charged with particular crimes in Wodonga admitted to trying around 30-40 vehicles for unlocked doors or open windows, stealing from those that were easily accessible. While a lock may not deter every thief, if it prevents entry on one occasion, it’s well worth it. And with the addition of ‘safety cameras’ being installed in more locations across our communities, criminals are being caught and charged with crimes, where they may previously have escaped prosecution. Our story on page seven about the attacks on Wodonga taxi drivers on the weekend, and the subsequent fallout is a perfect example. Local businesses such as Wodonga Taxis are installing these devices to act as a deterrent, or to aid in the prosecution of criminals - now we all need to play our part and ensure our homes and vehicles are locked and safe to help wipe this scourge from our community.

The local Albury SES is looking to add to its volunteer base.

SES wants you Accidental shooting By KRYSTEN MANUEL POLICE warn hunters to be vigilant with gun safety after an incident last Friday left a man wounded. Police were told at 10.45pm on Friday that a 16-year-old boy had injured his 64-year-old father while shooting on a property in Bowna, 35 kilometres from Albury. The father was driving a utility and the boy was in the tray when the utility hit uneven ground as the boy fired a shot. “We can ascertain at this stage that it is purely an accident, Detective Sergeant Chris Wallace told NewsWeekly. “The injury to the adult’s leg was caused by a metal fragment from the vehicle, not from the projectile. “There was a minor, superficial injury to his right leg which required a piece of metal to be removed. Det Sgt Wallace said there was no criminality on behalf of the son and the damage was minor. The man was taken to Albury Base Hospital where he was treated and released.

By TREVOR JACKSON ALBURY SES is on a recruitment drive. They’re looking for volunteers from 16 years of age up, people with experience using chainsaws, operating boats, 4x4s or those with administration skills to help out during times of natural disaster such as storm and flood. And with the recent spate of natural disasters across the country, the need for such volunteers has never been more evident. The SES will be holding an open night this month for anyone interested in joining. Operations leader Tim Keown said while numbers were strong, the SES ran a recruitment drive every year and said it was always handy to have new members on board with varied experience. “Generally we take people 18 and over but we do have the capacity to have a limited number of 16

and 17-year-olds, he said. “Older people are welcome to join. If they don’t want to go climbing on roofs or whatever the case may be, there are always office jobs on the operations side, communications work that needs to be done we’re always open to that. While there are around 50 volunteers currently registered in the Albury branch, Mr Keown said many weren’t as active as others due to work or family commitments. He said the more volunteers registered, the easier it was for the SES to dispatch people in emergency situations. The open night will take place at the Albury local headquarters at 1 Hoffman Rd Thurgoona (Corner Elizabeth Mitchell Drive), on Tuesday 26 March. General information about volunteering with the NSW SES can be found on the website www.ses.nsw. gov.au

CRIME figures are up across Victoria, and Wodonga doesn’t seem to be immune to the disturbing trend. On the weekend a Wodonga taxi driver was allegedly set upon by a group of young offenders while simply trying to do his job. But as new technology continues to improve, so does the ability of police to catch offenders red-handed. Video evidence is becoming a more valuable tool in fighting crime and Wodonga’s Sergeant Dave Arnold said it was very useful for catching offenders. “It certainly assists as an avenue of inquiry for us, he said. “It is good independent evidence - it’s good to show a magistrate exactly what has occurred and it’s a good investigative tool. Hopefully it’s a deterrent, and if it’s not, well hopefully it will help get a successful prosecution. Sgt Arnold said apart from crimes such as assault, much of the reported crime in the area was what he described as opportunistic. “I can certainly say most of the things - what we know as highvolume crime - they are generally opportunistic-type crimes, residen-

tial and business premises with windows open or unlocked, he said. “With theft from motor cars, there were a number of people processed for that earlier in the month and during the interview they were charged with a number of offences. “They admitted to trying 30 to 40 cars during the night. They basically stole from cars that had windows open or cars that were unlocked. “The majority, I would say 99.99 per cent of the thefts have no evidence of forced entry. Sgt Arnold said while crime in Wodonga had not significantly increased recently, it was still a major focus for local police to reduce the figures. “The crime load here is significantly less than the metropolitan areas, but it’s all relative, he said. “Yes there are crimes definitely occurring in the Wodonga area that we are investigating and a number of people have been charged, especially over the last month and it would be nice if we could reduce it even further. You have a large population here and unfortunately they are things that are happening everywhere, not just here in Wodonga. “They are happening and we’re not immune to it.

Bryan Craig says Matthew Ward is one of the most dedicated swimmers he’s coached to date.

Eyes on the prize By TREVOR JACKSON MATTHEW Ward is a young bloke with a goal. He’s aiming for the Australian team for the Rio Olympics, and is well on the way. At just 17 years of age, with abundant talent and a driving desire to succeed, Ward has been able to excel, breaking four state records at his last meet and securing a spot on the Road to Rio Australian swimming squad. Ward began swimming around five years ago after tap dancing became too painful with his disability. A hip dysplasia causes him pain on a daily basis and he chose to swim simply to keep fit. In less than a year he found himself on the GT Shamrocks swimming team, pushed through the pain barrier and rocketed into the NSW state record books. He’s now headed for the dizzying heights of international competition, with an eye firmly on the Rio games as a multi-class swimmer. At his last state meet he broke the records for the 50m freestyle, 50m breast-stroke, 50m butterfly and 100m breast-stroke events in his classification. He also holds a national record for the fastest 200m butterfly event. Ward said, despite the obvious pain, the opportunity to reach Rio was just one driving force behind his success. “The pain is something I’ve lived with and I’m

used to,” he said. “It’s always there but it’s more like a driving force than a hindrance. Rio is one of the reasons I push through the pain. I’m sure that would be a reason for anyone - knowing you’re on a squad with the possibility to be the fastest in the world.” Coach Bryan Craig says Ward displays the temerament of a true champion, and he rates him as one of the best he’s trained. “I’ve coached quite a few swimmers in different areas of the world,” Craig said. “I’ve worked with some of the best swimmers and coaches on the planet and to be honest, as far as heart and the ability to do things, this kid is absolutely amazing. I’m a firm believer, if you really want something, you can really go there, but it can’t just be in the brain, it has to be in the heart. “I believe Matthew has it in the heart - if he really wants to go to Rio, he will go to Rio.” Ward says he’s happy with his achievements so far but is looking to continue to see what he can achieve. “After just four years from swimming lessons to the Road to Rio camp is pretty amazing,” he said. “As far as it goes, I’m happy where I’m at but I would love to be able to go to Rio. “That’s my goal at the moment.”

“I’M after volunteers, and an increase in memberships - the female membership particularly,” Graham Docksey, OAM, and new president of the Albury RSL sub-branch said. After his recent election as president, Mr Docksey wants to make some changes, and they start with more hands. “I come from a different background - I’m very entrepreneurial, I’m prepared to get out there and push things and do things,” he said. “There are a number of things that can be built on from the previous committees who have all done a sterling job.” The RSL will need someone to work the front desk one day a week to take any phone calls or inquiries from the public, as well as people to assist with barbecues at Bunnings once or twice a year for half a day. “It’s not a demanding job there’s plenty of flexibility, they don’t need to be an ex-service background,” Mr Docksey said. Some of the many responsibilities that the Albury subbranch covers are the delivery of military eulogies at funerals when requested, the conduct of Anzac Day and Remembrance Day services, and the annual appeals during the Anzac Commemorations and Remembrance Day activities. The sub-branch also has a pensions officer who is available to provide assistance with regards to pensions and related advice. “I also want to increase the memberships,” Mr Docksey said.

Give a little Wiggle By KRYSTEN MANUEL

HUNDREDS of little Wiggles fans flocked to the Albury Entertainment Centre on the weekend to sing and dance with their colourful idols. The delighted screams of children could be heard well into QEII Square as all their favourite characters came to life, including Henry the Octopus, Wags the Dog, Captain Feathersword and even a camel! And the party continued afterwards as the flock of delighted children emerged, top to toe with Wiggles merchandise.

Assault has huge impact By TREVOR JACKSON A DISTURBING attack on two Wodonga taxi drivers has left more of a mark on the community than many may think. Wodonga Taxis manager John Farrington said the attack had left one vehicle out of action, two taxi drivers traumatised and disabled clients waiting longer for services around the city. “You look at the whole scenario early Sunday morning - you have a bunch of folk out, probably under the heading of having a good time which went sour, they frighten the living hell out of one taxi driver, they punch another one, they punch a window out of the taxi and kick the sliding door out, and for what end?” Mr Farrington said. “For us it has put the vehicle off

the road for three days, and that’s probably the best part of $3000 revenue gone plus about $1500 worth of driver remuneration. “But one of our maxi-cabs being out means there’s a 20 per cent less availability of wheelchair cabs. We are flat chat at any time moving handicapped people around Wodonga. Until we have that vehicle back on the road, those folk, who are probably the most vulnerable in our community are having to wait longer for taxis. “All that because some yahoos decide to play up on a Saturday night - it has far-reaching effects into the community.” Mr Farrington said he was pleased to have made the decision to fit cameras to his cabs, meaning situations like this could be dealt with swiftly by the police.

Sounds of Mancini THE JAZZ Basement will this week present a special performance by the Michelle Nicole Quartet, with the release of their new CD, Mancini. The CD celebrates the music of one of the world’s greatest composers, Henry Mancini, from two of the best-known pieces in history, Moon River and the Peter Gunn Theme, to lesser-known treasures like the beautifully crafted

Widely regarded as the finest jazz singer in the country, Michelle Nicolle continues to impress, with the 2012 performances including Asia Pacific Festival (Siberia), The Schlot (Berlin) and a national tour. Ms Nicolle has evoked such emotions as “sometimes dreamy, sometimes as excited as a child in a sweet shop, but always marvellously expressive” to “Michelle is a

He said he couldn’t understand the actions of the group involved in the weekend’s attack. “If you have a look at the situation, those lads didn’t do any risk analysis at all,” he said. “They picked a floodlit area that has CTV coverage, plus the coverage in the taxi.” Mr Farrington said while he hadn’t needed to call upon the footage from his taxis on many occasions, it was reassuring to know it was there when required. “In one instance some people to took to one of our taxis in High Street with a baseball bat,” he said. “All that was nicely captured on the safety cameras. Ultimately when this latest incident goes to court, the CTV footage will form part of the prosecution.”

The performance begins at 8pm at the JAZZ Basement, Gateway Island Wodonga with the bar open from 7.30pm. Call or text Graeme on 0438 623 462 for performance seating reservations.

The remembrance ceremony will be a touching part of the weekend’s dragon boat racing on Gateway Lakes.

Dragons on the water GATEWAY Lakes will be a sea of colour this weekend when the fifth annual Dragon Boat Regatta takes to the water on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 March. Organised by the Brave Hearts Dragon Boat Club, the event is designed to be a weekend of sport, fun, camaraderie and healthy competition to celebrate the Chinese Year of the Snake. Saturday will see local monks blessing the boats at 11am with racing to begin at noon. Racing will include 14 local corporate and community teams, with many of the 280 competitors first-timers. Saturday will also include cancer sur-

vivor teams racing for the annual Lina Mildren Memorial Trophy and a remembrance ceremony on the water at the end of the day. Border Express will be defending their title against other teams such as Visy, Joss, Albury City, Belvoir Special School and St Matthews Youth. Sunday will see teams from across Victoria and southern NSW compete between 9am and 4pm. Albury Wodonga will have three local clubs competing this year. Brave Hearts will be joined for the first time by new clubs Warriors and the Border Area Dragons.

Let’s talk about sex, seniors! By KRYSTEN MANUEL

TO THE surprise of young people, seniors are still going at it and going strong, according to the Australian society of Sex Educators, Researchers and Therapists. With Seniors Week coming up on 17 to 24 March, ambassador for Seniors Week and Australian of the year, 71-year-old Ita Buttrose believes it may be a shock to many young people that their grandparents still enjoy a full and adventurous sex life. Ms Buttrose says that many young people have a misguided belief that older people don’t think about sex at all, mainly because we live in a society where the idea of older people having sex is painted as undesirable. In fact, it was not that long ago that a report was released regarding older people and the need for STD checks. The research from the University of New England illustrated that rates of sexually transmitted

WIN

diseases among people aged 50 and over were rising, with chlamydia cases in this age group doubling between 2004 and 2010. Lead researcher Victor Minichiello said the increase of STIs among Australian seniors was part of a global trend, and particularly concerning for states where a high proportion of residents were over 50, like Queensland. Research from the Monash Institute of Medical Research shows that one-third of men aged over 70 are still sexually active. At the same time, a study published in the Medical Journal of Australia found a quarter of married women over 76 still had sex. In light of this new revelation, this year’s NSW Seniors Week is scheduled to include gay and lesbian-themed cinema and an afternoon in which to discover how to write erotic literature. But is it too much for the more conservative among our population? Studies also show that seniors are more discerning about their sex life. We will have to wait and see.

POST TO:

Reasons move an older, wiser generation A NEW report from the National Seniors Productive Ageing Centre has revealed the reasons behind many seniors’ choice to relocate to a retirement village. The report is titled “Relocation to a Retirement Village: Who Considers Relocation and What are People Looking for?” Analysis revealed that age, retirement and financial status were all associated with the likelihood of having considered relocation in the future. To break it down, those aged 55-64 were 72 per cent more likely than those aged 65-74 to have considered relocation. Retirees were 63 per cent more likely to have considered relocation compared to individuals remaining active in the workforce. Those considering themselves to have enough money to meet their needs were 255 per cent more likely to have considered relocation in comparison to people reporting that they did not have enough money to meet their needs. Those seniors who are in better health and got along with their neighbours better are, understandably, less likely to consider the move to a retirement village. And it seems that however old you are, we still like to be as social as possible. The report

found that social network quality and personality characteristics were associated with the consideration of relocation. Greater perceived neighbourhood social cohesion was associated with a decreased likelihood of having considered relocation, whereas wanting to relocate may be associated with dissatisfaction with the neighbourhood environment at any age. The residential environment is closely linked to an older person’s capacity to remain independent, participate in community activities and feel secure in control of their daily activities. Unsurprisingly, poor physical health is an important predictor of relocation, as difficulty in caring for oneself, home and significant other will inevitably diminish. Although many seniors dread the thought of moving to a retirement village, they also seem not to realise that taking that step towards a retirement village could also be an important step towards maintaining independence. The results of the report also support suggestions that the perceived costs associated with retirement complex living may also be a barrier to relocation. While most respondents indicated having adequate financial resources to meet their needs, those who did not were significantly less likely to have considered relocation.

Q MANHATTANS is enjoying a booming clientele, and that’s not by chance. A concentration on good food, great coffee, a relaxed atmosphere and personal service has provided owner Michael French with a thriving business. While the name may suggest an up-market restaurant, that’s not necessarily the case, with the takeaway or sit-down coffee market well catered for from the morning rush hour to late at night. “Basically we do coffee and cake all day from 7am right through to 11pm,” Michael said. “We use Veneziano coffee and a lot of the customers say it’s the best they have tasted.” Michael says a combination of good staff and quality service complements the lush furniture, the tasteful artwork gracing the walls and the old black-and-white movies which run throughout the day, all equating to an enjoyable customer experience. “We want to let everyone know they can come in and sit down for a coffee or a meal and feel comfortable,” Michael said. What’s on

SHE sounds great BORDER residents are in for a touch of heaven when SHE descends on town this weekend. The Seven Harp Ensemble is set to perform at the Albury LibraryMuseum on Sunday in a captivating visual and audible experience. The beauty of the harps’ visual form and the graceful gestures of the harpists combine with the enchanting sound of this most ancient instrument to transport the listener away from the everyday. SHE was founded by Artistic Director Alice Giles, world-renowned performer, teacher and advocate for the harp. The remaining members of

SHE comprise some of the best young talent from around Australia, with several members currently studying and working internationally. The all-female group was born out of the summer harp courses directed by Ms Giles on the east coast of Australia. SHE previously represented Australia at the American Harp Society’s annual conference in 2006 and was invited to tour to China in January this year, performing at the National Centre for Performing Arts in Beijing. The group was also the guest of Beijing Television as part of its prestigious

Singles to mingle (MA15+)

Jodie O’Connell is one of the many who will be joining in the action at the Kinross this weekend.

By KRYSTEN MANUEL IT’S pretty hard out there for us single lads and lasses. As we get older the pickings get slimmer and the opportunities to meet like-minded people are harder to come by. That’s where the Kinross comes in. On 8, 9 and 10 March the Kinross Woolshed is holding the very first Kinross Wants a Wife - a full weekend of group activities, drinks, fantastic food and great music. “The whole idea is to create an environment where people can legitimately come and find other people who want to pair up,” Kinross owner, Nick Conway said. “You’re not going to find anyone sitting on the couch at home and some people don’t have the social networks that others do, so we’ve created that. “Rest assured that everyone’s single

and looking for a partner, so the odds are pretty good that you’ll meet someone you’ll get along with.” Organisers are hoping to get close to 100 eligible bachelors and bachelorettes of all ages to join in the weekends activities. “Twenties, thirties, forties and fifties are really well represented and there are some that are older too,” Mr Conway said. “They’re from far and wide - there’s quite a few locals, but there’s lots coming from Melbourne too.” And if the nerves put a damper on seeking out your potential soulmate, the weekend promises a fantastic range of activities and entertainment. “It’s being hosted by John Walker who is famous for Full Frontal - he’ll be very funny,” Mr Conway said. “On Friday night on the back deck we have a meet and greet, it’ll be very light-

Box office

hearted. John will be roaming around with a microphone talking to anyone who’s game enough to let us know a bit about themselves. “The next day we’ll be back here with games and activities all day. It’ll be done in teams, there won’t be any one-on-one activity because the whole aim is not to make anyone feel awkward. “As the day goes on, teams will swap as a way of getting everyone to mix. “At 4 o’clock, they can clear out or hang around at the bar and then we have a big night - a big buffet dinner and a big night of music planned. “Then they come back Sunday morning for a big breakfast and they go on their way.” So don’t be shy - call into the Kinross and pick up a registration form. Your soulmate is waiting!

MOVIE: Side Effects DURATION: 106 minutes A THRILLER with many twists and turns, Side Effects tells the story about a successful New York couple, Emily (Rooney Mara) and Martin (Channing Tatum.) Martin has just been released from several years in jail, after a business arrangement went wrong. Emily seems happy to have him home, but struggles with deep depression. After a suicide attempt, Emily is referred to Dr Jonathan Banks (Jude Law) who puts Emily on the antide-

pressant, Ablixa. Emily starts to show some very strange side effects on the new drug, prompting Dr Banks to contact Emily’s previous doctor, Dr Victoria Siebert (Catherine Zeta-Jones). Emily is eventually incarcerated for murdering her husband and the question hovers over them all - whose fault is it? As this question is explored, Dr Banks’ life begins to fall down around him and it seems there is a lot more to the story than some psychotic side effects. Although it was off to a slow start,

Side Effects was very cleverly delivered and the plot was extremely engaging. Although I left with the feeling of satisfaction that “just desserts” were served, I don’t think anyone will walk out of this movie with a good feeling. The final scene (which was also the first scene) visually expresses the absolute loneliness and utter hopelessness some people experience due to extreme mental illness, and the thought is very sobering. Sometimes the best revenge is not death - but there are more than one form of “death.”

Homes&Property Albury Wodonga

The city’s playground By TREVOR JACKSON WODONGA’S Willow Park is well-known as one of the city’s best playgrounds, with room to walk the dog, for the youngsters to enjoy the open spaces and kick a footy, or just to sit back and relax on a rug in the shade of a tree. This week’s featured property offers all that and more. Just a stone’s throw from the park, this wellpresented three-bedroom family home offers space and privacy, ideal for the growing family, the retiree or even the astute investor. Street appeal is high with a large front lawn, established gardens and bay windows while an undercover entry ensures the shoes can be kicked off at the door to keep the outdoors outside. Inside the home has been fastidiously maintained, with carpets providing warmth and comfort. The master bedroom is situated at the front of the home with its own bay window, adding a sense of space and style. The spacious main room is enhanced by a generous ensuite and large walkin robe. The two remaining bedrooms are both of am-

ple proportions, with a spacious main bathroom and separate toilet for added convenience. Two separate living areas add to the appeal of the home, providing space for the parents and the children. Across the hall from the master bedroom sits the formal lounge room, again with its own bay window, which provides ample space to relax with the family or host guests. With the dining room is adjacent, this is the ideal entertainment area when friends arrive, and both the formal lounge and dining areas can be closed off to ensure privacy, while the youngsters can enjoy their own space in the family area. Here you’ll find a spacious and well-designed kitchen with ample storage via overhead cupboards and a corner pantry. A gas cooktop, electric wall oven, dishwasher and double sink take care of the necessary chores, while a breakfast bar allows for those quick meals on the run. The comfortable family room is ideal for the children to set up their own entertainment centre, computer system and games. Outdoor entertaining is easily accessed from both family and dining rooms. An undercover patio provides the perfect spot

to sit and relax with cool beverage on a hot day, with an established hedge ensuring a little extra privacy. The tandem double carport provides space for the family vehicles under the main roof of the home, which is further enhanced by an over-sized double brick garage in the back yard. Whether the man of the house likes to tinker on cars, enjoys a touch of woodwork or just wants a space to call his own, this could be the ideal man cave. Shelving is already in place for easy storage and from there it’s up to his own desires. The rear gardens are well established and easy to maintain with enough space for a swing set, sandpit or maybe a vegetable garden to satisfy the green-thumb of the family. And all this is within easy reach of everything Wodonga has to offer, with access to Pearce Street just around the corner. If you’re looking to start out in the real estate market with a young family, or retired and wanting to downsize but still retain room to move and space for when the family visits, or maybe you’d like to add a quality property to your growing rental portfolio - this could be the one you’ve been waiting for.

THURGOONA has long been touted by those on the Border as a future growth corridor. With the expanding population and improved infrastructure in the region many are looking to Thurgoona to set up home and still retain a country feel. To further boost its reputation, Albury Wodonga was recently recognised by Money magazine as being high on the list of top investment spots, with Thurgoona a major focal point. Large blocks and a country lifestyle add to the appeal while the expanding facilities all make for a very desirable address, and few addresses could be more desirable than Fairway Gardens. Alatalo Bros originally began developing the estate and now have stage seven ready for release, with around 22 of the new blocks backing onto the golf course. Green belts separate the blocks from the golf course, creating a relaxed, country atmosphere, while the higher-set blocks take in beautiful views across the surrounding hills. “We’ve developed over 200 blocks at Fairway Gardens since we started,” Alatalo Bros manager Tony Moyle said. “This is one of the last stages to be developed and consists of 52 blocks. It’s been fairly popular wrapping around the golf course and we’ve had a lot of inquiries about this release.” Mr Moyle said the combination of large blocks, the country atmosphere, a number of award-winning homes in the estate and provision for connection to the National Broadband Network made for a very attractive location. “You’re still close to the centre of Albury, but it’s like you’re out in the country,” he said. “There are some good green belts out there where no development is happening, and it will remain that way. Thurgoona Plaza is only a few minutes away, offering all the facilities you need - Thurgoona is really moving ahead.” Blocks of land in the estate range from 450m2 to around 1100m2, the average being around 700m2. Mr Moyle said those sizes really ap-

Tony Moyle says Fairway Gardens is a great lifestyle choice for your next home. pealed to families. “Families still want the kids growing up out in the backyard,” he said. “That’s what we’re trying to develop in these estates.” And while Alatalo Bros is the land developer for Fairway Gardens, Mr Moyle said those purchasing land still had a choice when deciding on a builder. “We build a lot of the homes out there but there are a number of display homes in the estate from other builders,” he said. “People aren’t just tied to us - they do have a choice.” If you’re looking for that ideal block to build your dream home, a country feel with city convenience, and the possibility of high future capital gains, Fairway Gardens is certainly worth a look.

Local Sport Donna does it for Dad By KRYSTEN MANUEL

Donna Burgess didn’t just come away from the Victorian Masters Pentathlon with a medal.

WODONGA athlete Donna Burgess made Australian history on the weekend, smashing the national record at the Victorian Masters Pentathlon - an event she hadn’t competed in since she was just 16. “I was really rapt,” she said. “I rang the family last night and had a few drinks to celebrate - they know I put in a lot of time. It’s a big commitment and its a bonus when you get something for it.” Burgess competed in the 5055 age group in the event that was comprised of a 800m, 100m, javelin, shotput and a jump. “I train specifically for track stuff, so I don’t do any field, but I am quite strong,” she said. “On the day I threw really well, jumped really well, I wasn’t as quick as I had hoped.” Burgess follows in the footsteps of her father, a professional runner who introduced her to the sport at just five years old.

“He ran at Stawell in the mile and half-mile in those days, which is the 800m and 1600m. “I ran from when I was five to when I was 20, then I’d had enough, but I came back when I was 47 - I had a good 27-year break. “I lost my dad about seven years ago and he was doing all this Masters stuff before I even started. He used to ring me and get so excited and I said ‘what are you getting so excited for?’ “But now I appreciate how hard it is to train at our age, our bodies are not the same. “Kids bounce back no worries, but when you get older it is harder on your body.” Burgess will soon be heading off to Canberra for the Australian Masters Championships to compete in the 800m and the pentathlon. “She’s a top-class athlete for her age and she proved that - an Australian record is something to hang your hat on for a while,” trainer, Ken Little said.

Neil sprints to victory, from scratch By TREVOR JACKSON NEIL Van Der Ploeg has taken the honours in the annual Geoff Dixon Memorial cycling road race on the weekend, recording both the fastest time and crossing the line in first place. Van Der Ploeg, who began from a scratch position in the handicap event, finished with a time of 1 hour 22 minutes, averaging in excess of 45 km/h over the 62-kilometre course. The pace was hard and fast throughout the 110-strong field and with just five kilometres remaining the attacks began. Van Der Ploeg and fellow scratch markers Rhys Pollock, Stuart Shaw and Michael Rice pushed hard to the final 500 metres. It was then Van Der Ploeg unleashed his devastating final sprint to take victory ahead of Canberra riders Shaw and

Rice with Border cyclist Pollock coming home in fourth. “The handicap style of racing is always pretty tough,” he said. “A lot of small groups go off and you have to catch them so you can’t slack off for a minute. Until you’ve caught the front markers you just make sure you don’t go too hard and you do your share of the work - it’s a bit of a gentlemen’s agreement.” Van Der Ploeg said once his group caught the limit riders the race became more tactical and he began to put a plan into action. And racing the likes of Pollock and Shaw didn’t faze him. “Being a pretty fast sprinter I backed myself, so I just watched the other guys to make sure no one snuck off the front then tried to nail the sprint,” he said. “I’ve raced guys like Reece and Stuart before - Stuart has won a lot of races

in the past, particularly in sprints. I just tried to get the race to pan out to that sprint finish so if it came down to that I could probably have the speed to get over the top.” Van Der Ploeg said sprinting was one area of his riding he’d been working hard on, and it paid dividends, providing him the legs to finish the race in the tight bunch sprint. “In road riding almost every race will come down to a sprint finish,” he said. “It takes a bit of skill and you have to get the timing right. You get a feel for how the bunch flows, get yourself in the right position and time it right.” Riding for the Melbourne-based Search2Retain team, Van Der Ploeg plans to work hard this year in the national road series, compete in a few overseas tours and see where his passion takes him.

Runners at top Velocity By KRYSTEN MANUEL TOP athletes from Wodonga athletic club, Team Velocity, came home enlightened after attending the Victorian Open Championships, having run against Olympians at the tender age of 16. “I’m extremely happy - they competed against open age athletes,” trainer, Ken Little said. “Sam was in the 400m with Tamsyn Lewis, Nathan competed against Josh Ross the two-time Olympian and jeez, for their age, they were super.” Samantha Little ran a time of 59 seconds in the 400m against a strong headwind. “I entered the 400 open and I didn’t expect to make the final or anything like that,” she said. “But I came third in my heat and my time qualified sixth fastest, so I went in the final and I came seventh.” Little said she was “pretty happy” with her performance, but running against Tamsyn Lewis was a highlight. “I went there thinking I was just going for a run, but to make the final was amazing,” she said. Nathan Howse competed in the 100m and 200m and was proud to have made the semifinals for both events against the likes of two-time Olympian, Josh Ross.

“I semi-finaled for the 100m which was good, I was the only junior athlete to semi-final against all the Olympians,” he said. “I semi-finaled in the 200m as well, the heat time was all right, it was 22.84, and the 100m times, well, I was running into a -5.5 headwind so it was hard work. “The heat, I ran 11.28 and the final 11.91.” Running simultaneously with the competition was the Junior Practice Meet for Nationals, which are coming up this weekend. Jason Young took it home in the 800m, giving him confidence for the upcoming event. “I won the 800 with a time of 2.02 and led the whole way, so I’m pretty happy.” Five athletes from Team Velocity will be heading across to Perth for the National Championships this weekend, all hopeful for medals in their own events, but also competing in relays. “Nathan’s definitely in the 4x100m relay, under 20, and Sam’s in the under 24 4x100m relay, I’m pretty sure,” Mr Little said. “Last year all the relay teams won medals, so hopefully they can bring home a national medal. “They deserve everything they’ve got, they’ve worked hard.”

Trainer Ken Little is hopeful for Jason Young, Nathan Howse and Samantha Little, who have their sight set on the National Championships.
