NEWSWEEKLY’S person of the year, Councillor Eric Kerr.
NewsWeekly
Young gun fires up By TREVOR JACKSON LOOKING back on 2012, trying to pick a person of the year became a simple choice. While many sections of the community take pleasure in slamming local council at any opportunity, one young Wodonga man was willing to put all that aside and stand up to be counted. At 18 years of age, Eric Kerr put up his hand to run for Wodonga council election and was successful, becoming the youngest councillor ever to be elected in the city. Of course we’ve seen similar situ-
ations in federal politics and indeed a young Wyatt Roy was an inspiration to Cr Kerr. Previous involvement with Wodonga Council through youth leadership programs and “a love of politics and giving back to the community” is what Cr Kerr said drove his ambitions. After his success Cr Kerr said, “I’ve been humbled honestly. It’s indescribable really. It’s good to know the community has put faith in me to do the job.” And a few months down the track Cr Kerr hasn’t lost any enthusiasm for his position, saying he’s still humbled
by the support being shown throughout the community. “It’s overwhelming really,” he said. “It wasn’t something I was expecting. After a few months of settling in I’ve realised it’s definitely something I love. “There’s a lot more to it than people realise. It’s been a steep learning curve.” Cr Kerr said the biggest issue he faced was the balancing act between council and working life, but said the effort was well worth it. He said he was looking forward to
the new year, with council resuming this week. “We had our first day back for the year Monday and it was fantastic,” he said. “This is the exciting part because it’s where we get to make our mark. We discuss what new and exciting projects are coming up. “Our Cube is finished, our pool is almost there and it’s really the time we decide our next big projects and where we put our time and effort into - it’s very exciting for me.” Cr Kerr said he was still receiving congratulations from the community
and couldn’t recommend the experience highly enough to any other young residents thinking of following suit. “I’ve already told some of my friends if they’re interested in going down the same road I’m more than willing help,” he said. “I’d say to anyone, go for it, if you really want to do it. It’s a great thing for the community, but make sure your heart’s in it, you’re committed and you have the time. “It’s the most fantastic experience I’ve had in my life so far.” Congratulations Cr Kerr. 1058151-SL3-13

Contents The year that was By TREVOR JACKSON
AS WE kick off with our first issue of NewsWeekly for 2013 it’s worth looking back at the year that was. A year on the Border is sure to throw up its share of news, be it good, or not so good, and 2012 was no exception. In this issue we’ve included what we consider some of the more notable moments of the year, from quotes to pics to news and sport, beginning with our front page, highlighting the desire of one young man to make an impact on society.

At just 18 years of age Eric Kerr put his hand up and stood for Wodonga Council, and as they say, the rest is history. We considered Cr Kerr to be worthy of the front page simply because his attitude is indicative of so much of what we see on the Border the passion, the drive and the desire to succeed. At the other end of the scale we were told of the violence towards women that is still rampant in the region. But it is refreshing to see no shortage of passion in the community determined to change this ugly culture. In sport we were treated to our beloved Bandits making the SEABL season their own, after a decade in the wilderness bringing the ‘big one’ home. At the same time we were saddened by the loss of our favourite basketballer, Allen McCowan, who came to the region to play a sea-
son, and stayed a lifetime. Our disadvantaged youngsters were left in awe by none other than Reece Mastin, who showed up on the Border - not so unusual, but in an interesting twist he was more than pleased to sit among a group of starry-eyed kids participating in the Midnight Basketball program for a group photo, and then stayed to have a personal picture taken with each child. We saw a new entertainment centre for Wodonga, history torn down in Albury and many other notable issues arise. The Border is certainly a great place to live and play. At NewsWeekly, as we move into the new year, we will again strive to bring you all the important happenings from around the region.

THE abortion debate on the Border took an interesting twist back in September when Father Peter MacLeod-Miller, head of St Matthews Church, slammed anti-abortion protesters outside the Englehardt Street clinic. He accused the local pro-life group of being “off the rails” and putting forward an “unyielding” and harmful agenda. He said his members had helped women access the clinic, protecting them from the “damaging” protesters. Fr MacLeod-Miller said he supported obstetrician Dr Pieter Mourik, who recently called for the community to help end the weekly protests. “Dr Mourik and the St Matthews congregation may seem ‘strange bedfellows’, but it is because of his impressive regard for humanity that contrasts with a disquieting abuse of power on the part of The Helpers, who despite their own publicity, are merely helping themselves according to an unyielding agenda,” he said.

ALBURY faced its own controversy leading up to the council elections last year. Henk van de Ven, while looking to be returned to council, discovered what he described as “a low act” during his campaign. Pamphlets bearing his name had been distributed around the community offering a 15 per cent discount from his business and a promise to stop the rot in council. “They obviously know the laws because they’ve done it outside of the electoral period ... ” Cr van de Ven was quoted as saying. He said he was unsure of the motives but believed it could have had something to do with his previous suggestion to sell the Cumberoona paddle steamer.
King Kong
WORD Bookstore in Albury was the last non-denominational Christian Bookstore in the region. With its closure, patrons believe they are losing a lot more than just a bookstore. “We’re the type of store which is somewhat unique,” manager Luke Tischler said. “It’s been not only a bookstore, but a ministry centre where we’ve prayed for and assisted people at times. Like other bookstores, Word suffered the effects of online shopping and e-books. Though local churches could purchase books on consignment, the attitudes of some prevents the venture from being fully effective. “Some people would be hesitant to go to a church for a book,” Mr Tischler explains. “For example, some people might not want to go to a Pentecostal or Anglican church, even if there’s a book they want. “Unfortunately that can be some people’s mindset.”
LOCAL talent Nathan Jones was handpicked to star in the upcoming production of King Kong in Melbourne later this year. The Fruit Fly instructor has been preparing for a role like this for the past seven years, perfecting his aerial and acrobatic skills and instructing budding performers across the Border. “It’s the biggest production I’ve been in, by far,” he told NewsWeekly. “I’m really excited for this one, I can’t wait to move to Melbourne. “I’m one of the people who control King Kong - this big 1.1 tonne puppet.” The production has been years in the making, with a large portion of the job being a search for the best people. “I am ferociously proud of our 100 per cent made-in-Australia cast,” said King Kong Director Daniel Kramer. Opening night for King Kong is 15 June.

WODONGA was celebrating back in August with the opening of The Cube. And none other than Victorian Premier Ted Baillieu officially opened the centre. Also present was Minister Simon Crean representing the Federal Government and various other dignitaries, completing a red-carpet style opening for the much awaited centre. “This is an absolute point in time for the history and the development of this city and something that I think for many, many years we will be proud of,” Wodonga mayor Mark Byatt above said. “Even though there was some apprehension about the design and potentially some of the colours and the naming of the facility, I think what we see in front of us is an outstanding outcome.”

River rubbished By KRYSTEN MANUEL
“The Kookaburra foreshore and the foreshore in general is cleaned up by the workers at the Murray Valley Centre. Why should they have to clean it up? It’s not their mess. “The Wodonga Council put out a heap more bins at Kookaburra Point, they’ve been very vigilant about it because they’re aware of it. “Areas like the Pines - it’s a disgrace! An absolute disgrace! I’d hate to have seen it on New Year’s Day. More importantly, Lead Sen Const Mack is concerned about the message it sends to litterers if nothing is done about the mess. “Unfortunately, they are all young people and what message are they sending to people with families? What sort of message are they sending to our young children? That it’s OK? “They need to be held accountable for it. If residents see people leaving rubbish behind on any day, but particularly Australia Day, they are urged to note registration numbers and descriptions of the offenders. “If you’re prepared to make a statement to the police that these people left the rubbish, and you
WITH Australia Day on the horizon, so is the unfortunate but inevitable assault on our environment - and it makes one local cop pretty angry. “I think everyone’s entitled to celebrate on special occasions, but unfortunately young people take it for granted that the council or someone else will pick up the tab and clean up their mess, Leading Senior Constable Kevin Mack said. “There’s no personal responsibility of them to take ownership of their mess, it’s left to someone else to clean up. Australia Day on the Border is something the community loves to support and celebrate. From makeshift boat races to floating down the Murray, the festivities are endless. But unfortunately, many Border residents get so caught up in their activites that they dismiss the importance of treating the area and other patrons of the area with respect. “Last year was particularly bad, the foreshores all around were littered - Kookaburra Point was littered with rubbish as far as the eye could see, Lead Sen Const Mack said.
Police chase trail bike
Leading Senior Constable Kevin Mack says leaving rubbish behind is not only a threat to the environment but also to people’s safety. identify the people, we’re more than happy to act on it, Lead Sen Const Mack said. “It’s quite a substantial fine and it’s quite a substantial encumbrance on our community to have all that crap on the foreshore blowing into the river or the weir. “It’s very difficult to police everything, but if people bring it to our attention, we act on it.
A 39-year-old male was charged after a police pursuit on Table Top Road, Thurgoona last Friday. The pursuit began after police saw the man driving his trail bike erratically and on the wrong side of the road for a short period. The rider dumped his bike in the scrub at the back of the Spring Park Estate but was apprehended a short time later. The Norris Park man was charged with multiple offences including being involved in a pursuit, displaying plates on an unregistered bike, riding unregistered/ uninsured and riding while disqualified. He was refused bail by police and granted conditional bail to attend court on 19 February.

If you’re in two minds, leave early.
Be FireReady.
visit cfa.vic.gov.au or call 1800 240 667
FIRE danger ratings help residents and visitors to Victoria know how a fire would behave if one were to start, unlike a total fire ban which is a legal declaration to cease activities which may cause a fire. CFA Chief Officer Euan Ferguson said fire danger ratings were a trigger to act. “They indicate how easily a fire can start, how intense it could burn, how difficult it will be to put out and how much damage it could cause,” he said. “The higher the fire danger rating, the greater risk to control the fire, therefore increasing the risk to lives and property. “The ratings are all about safeguarding your own personal safety and the safety of your family, which is paramount. Everyone who lives or visits high risk areas in summer should visit cfa.vic.gov.au to check the fire danger rating for their area every day.” They also tell people when conditions are dangerous enough to enact their bushfire survival plan. Ratings are forecast using Bureau of Meteorology data for up to four days in advance, based on weather and other environmental conditions such as fuel loads.
Fire danger explained
Mr Ferguson said total fire bans were legal restrictions designed to prevent fires from starting. He said strict penalties applied and breaches were referred to police. “A severe, extreme or code red fire danger rating on the other hand, should act as a trigger to leave early,” he said. “The fire danger rating system, which includes six ratings from low/moderate to code red, helps you to know when the conditions are dangerous enough to prompt you to leave early. Leaving early before a fire has even started is the only way to guarantee your family’s safety on a bad day. “Your plan needs to cover what you will do and where and when you will go well before there are any signs of fire.” Mr Ferguson said most people in high-risk bushfire areas knew that a code red rating means they should leave that morning or the night before. “But not as many of us are aware that leaving early on severe or extreme days should also be a serious consideration, particularly if your house is not well-prepared or if you have children in your care,” he said.
“There’s no one-size-fits-all answer as different areas of Victoria have different risk profiles. If you’re not sure I’d strongly recommend you to talk to your local brigade or book a free assessment through CFA’s Home Bushfire Advice Service.” To find out the daily fire danger rating or total fire ban status, go to cfa.vic.gov.au or call the Victorian Bushfire Information Line on 1800 240 667.
Bans and ratings in a nutshell
Total fire bans are legal restrictions on the use of fires outside, equipment and barbecues. They limit activities that have potential to start a fire in hot, dry or windy conditions. Fire danger ratings help you to know when conditions are dangerous enough to enact your bushfire survival plan. That might mean leaving the area early - the night before or early in the morning of a bad day. To find out more about fire danger ratings, visit cfa.vic.gov. au/firedanger.
Grassfire risk this summer The fi fire’s re s miles away.

Safe travel this summer A message from Victoria’s Fire Services Commissioner, Craig Lapsley
The best way to prepare for this fire season is to stay informed and plan to leave early, before you see smoke or fire. Plan to leave early: ü Talk to everyone you live with so you all know when you’re going to leave and where you’re going to go if a fire starts. ü Pack a relocation kit with important documents and essential items. ü On high-risk days, check Fire Danger Ratings and fire warnings on the CFA website and listen to local radio. Don’t wait and hope for the best. Visit the CFA website to find out how you can be FireReady.

years. Most people in high-risk bushfire areas know that a Code Red rating means they should leave that morning or the night before. It’s especially important to understand your risk if you’re travelling near bush, grassland or coastal scrub. Severe or Extreme ratings are more common and mean you could still be at risk if a fire starts. It’s better to be in safer places like cities and towns, especially if you’ve travelling with children. Low, Moderate and Very High ratings mean that although the fire risk is lower, you need to stay alert to the conditions. To check Fire Danger Ratings, go to cfa.vic.gov.au or call the Victorian Bushfire Information Line on 1800 240 667. You can also download the FireReady smartphone app - visit cfa.vic.gov.au/apps for more information on how to do this. Craig Lapsley Fire Services Commissioner, Victoria

If you’re in two minds, leave early.
This summer, knowing how to use Fire Danger Ratings is the best way to understand your fire risk when you’re travelling away from home. Fire Danger Ratings tell you how easily a fire could start, how intensely it could burn, how difficult it will be to put out, and how much damage it could cause. Ratings are forecast using Bureau of Meteorology data for up to four days in advance, and are based on weather and other environmental conditions such as fuel loads. Before you set off, check Fire Danger Ratings for the areas you’re travelling through and your destination. It’s important to understand what Fire Danger Ratings mean because they can guide your decisions about when and where you choose to travel. There are six ratings which range from Low to Code Red. Code Red signals the worst possible conditions for a grass or bushfire – there’s only been two Code Red days in the last three y
VICTORIANS need to be aware of the grassfire risk this fire season, CFA Chief Officer Euan Ferguson said. “While an ‘average’ fire season has been predicted, this still means that Victoria will experience fires across the state which could see thousands of hectares burn. “Drying grass after a wet year means we are also battling an increased risk of grassfire this summer,” he said. Grassfires spread rapidly, and travel at around 25 to 30 kilometres per hour. They are very hot and can produce huge amounts of radiant heat that can kill anyone caught out in the open. “People living on a farm or in a suburban area surrounded by grassland or paddocks are at risk from grassfire. “You can help protect your home and property from grassfire by slashing, mowing, grazing, spraying and using herbicide, and creating fuel breaks by removing all fuel down to the soil. It’s important to do this work at the start of summer. “However, like any fire, the safest place to be during a grassfire is well away from the threat,” he said.

Thurgoona’s fitness revolution WHEN the Hodgson family decided to take on a new business venture, they chose a business centred around the passion they all shared- fitness. Owner of Plus Fitness Thurgoona, Simon Hodgson is your typical Albury mancricket in summer, footy in winter, and has even played cricket with Merv Hughes in Melbourne. “My Husband (Simon Hodgson) loves fitness and our children are into sport, so we thought it was the perfect opportunity,” Owner Leanne Hodgson said. “Simon was a great cricketer.” Mrs Hodgson also likes to keep active, though running around after two sporty boys is enough to work up a sweat. “My oldest son, Brydan, plays for the Bushrangers and the GWS Giants in under 18,” she said. “He also works with us at Plus Fitness.” “Bailey is eight and plays cricket and Auskick- like his dad.” Owners of the Star Hotel in Albury, the Hodgsons know Albury and its surrounding suburbs well, and quickly saw the need for a gym to service the people of Thurgoona. “There’s no real gym in Thurgoona,” Mrs Hodgson said. “And with the growing population in that area, we thought it was the perfect location.” So what makes the Plus Gym franchise better than any other? The 24 hour Plus gym offers the latest range of Sports Art, Force USA and Australian Barbell Company strength and cardio equipment, free fitness programs, free time hold, free access to all plus fitness 24/7’s, no contracts and a friendly, inspir-
ing environment. “We liked what they had to offer the community,” Mrs Hodgson said. “Nowhere else in this area has a plus gym, and it’s fantastic value for your money. “One of the major benefits to joining our gym is that we have fitness classes on demand- classes you select on the computer that then come up on a television screen in a private training room. “The training room can fit up to six people comfortably.” Plus Fitness Thurgoona is also offering half price joining fees for a limited time, as the celebration continues from the grand opening on December 6 last year. The building is newly built and fitted, and members are greeted at the door by Plus Fitness professionals to assist on their journey to fitter, healthier individuals. Plus Fitness client manager, Ms Julia Nation, is well known for her success in the sporting arena, particularly sprints and athletics, from a young age, and has been making Albury proud on an international level. Ms Nation is just one of the friendly faces members will come across at Plus Fitness Thurgoona. Ms Nation is a sporting professional with the know-how and experience to assist with all fitness concerns, and is the ideal trainer for those wishing to achieve increased strength, power and speed. Clowning around By TREVOR JACKSON THE Melbourne International Comedy Festival is on the hunt for the funniest teen in the country, and they’re bringing their search to the Border. The annual Class Clowns competition will arrive in Wodonga on Tuesday 26 February at The Cube and those aged 9 - 12 or 14 - 18 (in 2013) can register to join in the fun. Graduating Flying Fruit Fly Circus student Tom Keely is taking the plunge and hoping for plenty of support from the local community. Keely says he was the class clown at school, the brunt of everyone’s jokes, and he didn’t mind a bit. He said the combination of jokes on and by him lead to his current studies at the Fruit Fly Circus clowning of course. “I was always a little bit hyperactive and animated in the school yard, reciting movie lines and things like that,” he explained. “I have a lot of movement in my routine as well so I’m hoping to incorporate some of the stuff I’ve learned at Fruit Fly into the routine.” Keely says he has been mostly influenced by the trio of Adam Hills, Dave Thornton and Frank Woodley. “They would be my top three comedians,” he said. “I like their style, how they present their jokes. Frank is very physical and that’s something I aspire to be like. The others are very witty. I think that’s a good combination, and they’re just enjoyable to watch.” With just five minutes to present his routine during the competition Keely said he was feeling a little nervous. But he urged Border residents to come along and enjoy a night of fun. “Laughter is the best medicine - but if you are sick, don’t come, you’ll just spread it,” he joked. “But seriously, this is the first time they’ve held it in Wodonga, so people should come - it’s going to be fun and they’ll have a good laugh.” Anyone interested in competing in the competition can find more information online at www.classclowns.com.au Registration is free.

Big college music grant THE Federal Government has approved a grant of $400,000 to Victory Lutheran College for the construction of a music centre. The project, estimated to cost $1 million in total, will begin construction within the coming month. The facility will involve music classrooms and band practice rooms, private instrumental lesson rooms, an outdoor learning space, a staff study and a new amenities block. Cain McDonald, principal of the college said it was a very positive and uplifting beginning to the new school year. “We are indeed thankful
to the Australian Government that they have again seen fit to provide us with a grant for new facilities, enriching the learning experiences for our students,” he said. “Currently we have a brandnew Food Technology Centre under construction which will be completed within the coming month. To have this specialist facility commence construction around the same time is an exciting time for students and staff.” Local company, Connelly Construction Services has been appointed as project managers and has already started pre-work commitments for the project.
Canoe caution call By KRYSTEN MANUEL
Well known Australian comedian Josh Thomas is a previous Class Clowns alumni.
ALBURY Police are urging canoeists to be aware and cautious of the strong current in the Murray River, after two recent incidents that required emergency rescues. On 4 and 5 January, canoeists found themselves in dangerous waters between the waterworks and the Spirit of Progress Bridge, with one woman hoppitalised for minor injuries and shock. Both parties were assisted by the Volunteer Rescue Association, NSW Ambulance and the NSW Maritime Services. “NSW Police will be hopeful that people use all due care when putting vessels into the Murray River,” Acting Inspector Steve Bosch said. “It appears to be that the people involved are inexperienced,
have been getting into trouble and thus have called upon help from emergency services.” Inspector Bosch warns the potential for damage of property, serious injury and even loss of life is endless, and to be vigilant with safety planning. “Any people that want to go out into canoes need to ensure that the vessel is safe, ensure they will use proper safety equipment such as life vests, ensure they have advised someone of their plans in relation to where they will be launching from, what their end destination is with the times they expect to be arriving,” he said. “And if possible, have some form of communication so they can get in touch with someone land-based if they do happen top get into trouble.”

Start planning for eisteddfod By TREVOR JACKSON AFTER more than a quarter of a century, Albury Wodonga Eisteddfod, The Festival of Sight and Sound, has become a must-do competition on the calendar for many local dancers. The 2012 entries for dance were up by 300 on the previous year. It may be a while off, but it’s time to begin making plans if you’re looking to enter. Already local dance groups are beginning their routines in preparation for the major event. Local dance teacher, Rosemary Drew said it was an exciting time for ballet students in the area. “It’s a very special event and the committee has worked hard to attract many dance schools,” she said. “Last year we had schools from Canberra and it’s becoming well-known even in Sydney. “They’re all wanting to enter, so it is rather exciting.” Ms Drew said the Albury Entertainment Centre provided the perfect setting for the young dancers. “The entertainment centre is beautiful,” she said. “They have a really big stage and the facilities are wonderful - it gives the children the opportunity to perform in a real theatre setting.” Another local dance teacher, Katherine Fraser said for her the main focus of the event was for the children to compete, but winning was of secondary importance. “It’s about doing their best, about gaining confidence and learning to work as a team,” she said. “They do work hard so it’s nice for them to be able to get dressed in their costumes and go

Just because you don’t get a place it doesn’t mean you’re not dancing well.” Many categories are open for groups and solo artists including ballet, contemporary, hip-hop and jazz. Those interested can visit the eisteddfod website at www.awesightandsound.com.au with new details for the upcoming event, including a full catalogue and entry forms, to posted in early February.

The Bandettes are calling for new performers to try out for the upcoming season.
Here’s cheers to Bandettes By TREVOR JACKSON
IF YOU’VE ever had an interest in cheerleading, now is the time to take the plunge and try out for the Bandettes. The Bandettes have been a regular feature at the Bandits home games for the last two years, performing in front of hundreds of spectators at the Lauren Jackson Sports Centre. Last year saw the group combine juniors and seniors for the first time, often with up to 40 performers on court. And coach Chantelle Hutchins said the winning season for the Bandits was just as exciting for the Bandettes, with the conference grand final the icing on the cake. “Having the grand final here was amazing for the girls - they were so excited,” she said. “It was such a contrast to the season before - the crowds weren’t as big, the energy wasn’t there, but last year was just amazing.” Chantelle said the girls had been received well by the game-night crowds, taking on an almost celebrity status. “We had a lot of people coming up to the girls at the games and telling them how amazing they were,” she said. “Quite often the girls would get pulled up down the street and people would say they saw them at the basketball game. In general it’s been great.”
While the group has a solid core of performers they all have to try out to continue as part of the squad and new places are also available. “We have auditions basically because it is a performance group so we need people who have certain skills,” Chantelle said. “It is quite a basic skill level, so they don’t all have to do backflips down the room. “In cheerleading a lot of the girls have different strengths to make it work. Not everyone is a flyer. We also need people who can lift. One group might be better at splits while another group might be better at something else, so we’re looking for a variety of different things.” Junior auditions, 9-14 years, will be held on Monday 21 and Wednesday 30 January at 7pm with the seniors, 14 years and over, to follow at 7.30pm at Hume Dance School. “It’s basically a half hour audition,” Chantelle said. “They don’t need to have anything prepared. We run them through a basic class and get them to do some skills. We also give them the opportunity to show us anything special they might be able to bring and have a little routine we teach them to see how they go learning it.” Those interested can simply turn up on the night or pre-register via the group’s Facebook page or by contacting Chantelle at chantelle@ humedanceschool.com.au

Dance for your life IN this age of health and well-being, it’s worth giving a thought to dancing for fitness. Dancing offers a great physical workout, utilising many muscles, but doesn’t have to be high energy to provide benefits. Generally a low-impact pastime, dancing offers benefits such as strengthening bones and muscles without hurting your joints, toning your entire body, improving posture and balance, increasing stamina and flexibility, all while reducing stress and tension. Most dance styles can be learned through the various dance schools on the Border, from ballet to jazz to modern and contemporary. Dance also offers the mind a boost, with exercise increasing the level of brain chemicals that encourage nerve cells to grow and improving memory through new steps and sequences. Whether young or old, dance provides benefits and can be linked to health and well-being in older members of the community. Being able to work at your own pace has its physical benefits, plus the added bonus of mixing with like-minded people you may not otherwise meet. If you’re looking for a low-impact, fun and healthy pastime check out a few of the dance schools in the region - you may just discover a new passion in life, or stir an old one.
Your chance to dance By TREVOR JACKSON
NINETEEN years of teaching dance on the Border has given Kylie Romeike a fair insight into the pastime in the region. From children as young as three right through to adults, the popularity of dance is strong - Kylie says it’s been that way for the last 10 years. And that’s no surprise, with her studio, Border Dance Works, continuing to offer programs to suit all ages and standards. While 2013 has just begun and enrolments are being taken, work is already in the planning stages for the first major competition of the year. “We’re getting started again and getting our competitive troupes underway, Kylie said. “Our first big competition is at Crown Casino in Melbourne in April and that’s an international competition with a lot of city studios competing as well - it’s the toughest competition we go to. Kylie said she takes her under 16 and adult troupes to the Melbourne competition and they generally fare reasonably well. “You’re up against 12 to 18 troupes so it’s huge, she said.
“We only meet once a week but you’re up against troupes that are training five nights a week. They take it to a whole different level. But it’s not just competitive dance offered at Border Dance Works. The studio welcomes students of all ages with a range of classes designed to suit all standards. “You can get into the competitive side and take it that bit further or we have a lot of general classes which are for kids who just want to do one class a week for a bit of fun, Kylie said. “They don’t need to compete - we do a concert at the end of the year at the Performing Arts Centre and if they want to dance in that they can. “For the adults we mainly do beginner ballroom classes. They’ll learn cha cha, jive, waltz - I base it on the class and what people really want to learn. “We also have a lot of wedding couples who come in and learn a dance for their wedding. That has become very popular now. There are a lot more non-traditional dances for weddings. A couple might want to do a jive or add a bit of hiphop to it. They can do a private lesson, choose the music and I choreograph something to that.
Jazmin Locke, has been with Border Dance Works for 11 years, beginning as a tiny tot and continuing on, something Kylie says is a common occurrence at her studio. “I’ve just had one of my girls, who was with me for around 12 years, go to a dance school in Melbourne, wanting to make a career from it, she said. “One of my teachers started with me when she was around 10 and now she’s teaching here fulltime. “I have a few students, like Jazmin, who started as little girls and I’ve seen them grow into their teenage years - that’s nice to see. Kylie says boys are also embracing dance more, possibly due to the extra exposure on TV. She said she offers such styles as hip hop which many boys enjoyed. “I think it’s a lot better for boys now, she said. “The more who do it the better it gets and I’ve seen the numbers continue to increase, so it’s becoming more accepted. Anyone interested in enrolling at the studio can contact Kylie through the Facebook page or call on 0418 242 058.

Packs shouldn’t be that painful PARENTS are urged to buy appropriate size backpacks for their children to help reduce pain and damage to their spines. About 70 per cent of Australian schoolchildren may suffer back pain from carrying schoolbags. A heavy bag that’s slung over one shoulder can, over the 12 years of schooling, cause chronic back problems that linger into adulthood. Risks include muscle strain, distortion of the natural ‘S’ curve of the spine and rounding of the shoulders. Parents can reduce the risk in many ways, such as buying the child an appropriately sized backpack and making sure the load isn’t too heavy. The risk factors for back pain include a schoolbag that weighs

more than 10 per cent of the child’s weight, holding the bag in one hand by its straps, carrying the bag over one shoulder, an incorrectly packed backpack and an incorrectly fitted backpack. To reduce the risk of your child having back pain or injuries, buy the right kind of backpack, make sure it is packed correctly and show your child correct lifting and carrying techniques. Buy your child a backpack that is endorsed by an Australian professional organisation, such as the Australian Physiotherapy Association or the Chiropractors’ Association of Australia. Members of Hume Building Society’s school banking committee, Avril Mcleod, Louise Maxwell and Kate Shanahan. IT’S back to school time and time to think about your child’s banking needs. Hume Building Society has all those needs covered with a new book launched to help your child receive a solid grounding on financial management. Hume sees improving financial literacy in the region as one of its core community responsibilities and works closely with schools to provide essential financial education. They provide school children around the Border access to great banking products and a financial literacy program through its school banking program. There are currently over 2,500 students and 35 schools participating in the program. In 2012, Hume’s focus on driving financial education was recognised nationally with the CANSTAR Youth Banking and Education Award. This year Hume will be launching an educational financial literary book to add to child’s financial
knowledge. The Junior Saver Club Save and Win activity book is designed to educate children on money management. It includes activities and prizes to reward children for their saving efforts by collecting coin stickers in which they can claim up to four prizes. The book can also be used throughout the school year by students, parents and teachers to encourage good saving behaviour, and covers topics such as, the importance of saving, needs versus wants, budgeting and a banking overview. An interactive website will also support the competition and includes games, activities and resources for children to enjoy. Hume’s Junior Saver Club, Save and Win competition starts 4 February. Activity books are free and will be available from all Hume branches and at participating schools.

Schools seek a place in the sun WITH summer in full swing and temperatures soaring, South West schools have been urged to take a leadership role when it comes to protecting children from skin cancer. In the region, only 52 per cent of schools have joined Cancer Council’s SunSmart Primary School Program. In response to these figures, Cancer Council NSW is encouraging the remaining schools to become SunSmart so that all students at all schools have the same protection.
The program bolsters sun safety beyond the common ‘no hat, play in the shade’ practice, which is ineffective on its own. “Good habits for life are formed during a child’s school years and the SunSmart Program will help students to grow up with sun safety top of mind, Megan Savin from Cancer Council’s South West office said. “The free program is all about teaching children the importance of sun safety in a fun and engaging way through online curriculum resources and fun lessons.
Sun smart goes hi-tech IF there’s one sure-fire way to educate children it’s via modern technology. Many children now have smartphones, and of course they love their apps. Sunsmart has the perfect option to help keep children safe in the sun when they return to school with the SunSmart App. We all know the risks of overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which causes wrinkles, skin and eye damage and ultimately leads to skin cancer. The SunSmart app for iPhone and Android mobile phones lets you know when you do and don’t need sun protection, making it easier than ever to be smart about your sun exposure, and could be the perfect tool to educate your children about the risks of overexposure. And it’s simple to get started. Download the app (by Boosted Human) and select your location in Australia. Set up a sun protection alert and receive daily reminders of the times of day sun
protection is required. Select to receive the alert at the time of your choice or at the exact time the UV is forecast to reach a level that can damage your skin and eyes. Use the sunscreen calculator to find out how much sunscreen you need to apply, taking account of your size and clothing. The app also includes the following features: - Sun protection times - Lets you know when you do and don’t need sun protection for any location in Australia. - Seven-day weather forecast - Check the weather for the week ahead. - Alert function - Personalise the alert function to remind you of the daily sun protection times. - Vitamin D tracker - Find out if you are getting enough UV exposure for vitamin D. - Sunscreen calculator - Find out if you are using enough sunscreen.
“With more than 141 people facing melanoma in the South West each year, we hope the program will protect students today and play a role in reducing these statistics when they become tomorrow’s adults. Local schools that join the program before 12 April 2013 will receive a free year’s supply of sunscreen. Principals and parents are encouraged to call the SunSmart team on 02 9334 1731 or visit www.cancercouncil.com.au/primary to find out how to join.
FAMILIES across the country have now begun receiving the first payment of their Schoolkids Bonus. The scheme, designed to help lighten the load for families with back-to-school costs at the time when they need it most, helps eligible parents with the cost of uniforms, shoes, school books and stationery, as well as school excursions, music lessons and sports registration fees. Each year eligible families will receive up to $410 for each child in primary school and up to $820 a year for each high school student, paid in two instalments - in January and July. Families with children starting primary or high school this year need to ensure their child’s enrolment details are up to date with Centrelink. They can do this by checking their details on the Centrelink website. The families of 1.2 million primary school students and one million high school students will be receiving this new cash bonus. Young people in school receiving Youth Allowance and some other income support payments may also be eligible for the Schoolkids Bonus and should contact Centrelink. How weight works By KRYSTEN MANUEL ONE of the keys to achieving and maintaining a healthy weight is to know how weight works - to know that weight gain and loss is different for every individual, though the same principles still apply. Maintaining a healthy weight is about balance. Imagine an old set of scales - one side holds incoming energy/ kilojoules (food), the other holds outgoing energy/ kilojoules (exercise). If these scales tip on the energy in side, you’re putting on weight. Similarly, if they tip on the outgoing energy side, you will lose weight. But knowing basic weight principles is not enough. You need to know yourself your body shape and the risks associated. Generally speaking, being overweight can cause coronary heart disease, diabetes and gall bladder disease, gout, arthritis and other joint issues, sleeping problems, including sleep apnoea and certain types of cancer. Excess weight around your middle is a greater health risk. Apple-shaped’ bodies (more common among men) carry more weight around their middle and are a greater health risk than ‘pear-shaped’ bodies (more common among women) where weight is carried more around the hips and thighs. People come in all shapes and sizes and what might be a healthy weight for one person isn’t necessarily healthy for another. To find out where you should be weight-wise, visit your GP.
The Ultra Lite weight loss and detox program is based on sound science and common sense. Clinical research, medical trials and many thousands of successful patient outcomes support this method of rapid and sustained weight loss as the premium weight loss program. You can lose up to 3 kilos in your ďƒžrst week and up to 1 to 3 kilos per week thereafter of fat loss. This is very rewarding for people who want to lose weight fast and natural but also allowing you to control your weight for life.

10 steps to sustainability IF you’ve already broken your new year’s resolution, Healthy Weight Week is time to get informed, get inspired and get started on a plan to get healthy and not for a week, for a lifetime. The Healthy Weight Week website displays a 10- week plan with simple steps to follow each week, without the rigidity and expense of pharmacy diets. Week 1: Start a food diary. This will help you see what you’re eating and drinking, and where any problem areas are. Week 2: Eat breakfast every day. Breakfast eaters are more likely to be a healthy weight and less likely to re-gain lost weight. Week 3: Choose lower fat versions of three foods you regularly eat. Look at the nutrition labels of two similar products and choose the one with the lowest fat content. Week 4: Take the stairs at work instead of the lift, or walk to your local shops. Work up to being active for at least 30 to 60 minutes each day. Week 5: Switch to healthier drinks. Swap soft drinks, cordials and juice for diet versions - or better still choose water and reduced fat milk. Have a glass, bottle or jug of water close by at all times.

vegetables to your day. Build up to the recommended two pieces of fruit and five serves of vegetables (around three cups) every day. Week 7: If buying treats, choose smaller serve sizes and have these in the house less often. Week 8: Shrink your portion sizes. Doing this at every meal is a sure-fire way to lower your energy (kilojoule) intake. Try using smaller plates and bowls or order the entree size if you’re eating out. Week 9: If you drink alcohol, reduce your intake and aim for at least two alcohol-free days each week. Try a wine spritzer (wine diluted with plain mineral water) instead of a glass of wine and use a smaller glass. Choose light beers over standard ’heavy’ beers. Week 10: Get the right support - explore the Australia’s Healthy Weight Week website for more healthy eating tips and hints. A crowd favourite, Marina Prior will be back again for Opera in the Alps.
The hills are alive
By KRYSTEN MANUEL
THE superb voices of Australia’s best including Marina Prior, Kane Alexander and Guy Noble will once again carry on the wind for several thousand eager spectators at Beechworth next Saturday. In its 17th year, Opera in the Alps began at Mt Buffalo, but spectators will be drinking in the picturesque scenery of Beechworth’s Baarmutha Park this year. Event director, Graeme Wall, promises the event will exceed expectations, with local talent of all ages to keep the crowds mesmerised. “You will hear some wonderful tunes and duets,” Mr Wall said. “A local boy who has made himself particularly well-known overseas as well as Australia, Kane Alexander, was raised in Albury and he will be singing most of the night with Marina. “He is the star attraction along with Marina Prior. “Kane Alexander has done a lot of
work over in New York over the last couple of years, so he’s a local boy that’s made good. That will be a real feature of the night.” Mr Alexander has performed all over the world, collected numerous awards, and recorded with Sony BMG Music. He is best-known for the lead roles he has performed on the musical stage, including Claude in the Australian production of Hair, Willard in Footloose and the Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz. Mr Alexander also performed in the 10th anniversary production of Les Miserables and has toured Australia in concert with the Australian Philharmonic Orchestra. Spectators will also witness some even fresher talent with the return of the 2012 Opera Scholar of the year, Georgia Wilkinson, to welcome the 2013 winner. “Every year they (contestants) have to audition to see who will be the Opera Scholar,” Mr Wall said. “They sing in a number of concerts and so on and are judged by the conduc-
Box office
tor and a couple of other adjudicators as to who will take out the $5000 prize. “This year Opera in the Alps hosts the 2013 final for the Opera Scholar competition. “Three other sopranos will compete for the prize that Georgie got last year, and the three are absolute gems. “They will be pushing themselves with the orchestra and Guy Nobel who will be conducting them.” And the talent gets fresher still, with Amanuel Visser performing a duet with Marina Prior at just 11 years of age. With an abundance of talent and a relaxed, natural setting, Opera in the Alps 2013 is set to be an unmissable event. “Baarmutha Park has turned out to be a wonderful surprise,” Mr Wall said. “It has a beautiful green oval and gum trees all around that we will be able to use for picnicking. It’s a wonderful venue.”

MOVIE: Hitchcock DURATION: 98 minutes WHO would have known that Alfred Hitchcock had a sense of humour? But then Anthony Hopkins is a sure thing to bring any character to life. Look out for the introduction between Hitchcock and one of his leading ladies, beginning, “Call me Hitch...” A stunning performance again from Hopkins, the master of strangely terrifying “eyeballing.” Hitchcock might not be everyone’s cup of tea, which was made clear when

Behind every great man... By KRYSTEN MANUEL
(PG)
I had to wake up my comrade about halfway through, but for those with an appreciation for classic cinema and the creative, I guarantee this one will stir your creative juices. Hitchcock is a film about the pinnacle of Alfred Hitchcock’s career as the ‘master of suspense.’ It documents the difficulties of producing one of the greatest thrillers in history, Psycho. It tells of the uphill battle Hitchcock faced financially, professionally, in his marriage and of his internal struggles and eventual triumphs.
Hitchcock’s passion and complete brilliance was explored, but his wife, Alma, was just as much of a focus. Viewers will find this particular facet of the film both heart-warming and inspiring. The portrayal of Alma by Helen Mirren was superb, telling the story of the woman behind the great man, or should I say, beside the great man. Her own brilliance, strength and limitless support was enlightening and witty.

WHAT does hifi mean? The term over the decades has moved from an audio set of standards set up in Germany by Deutsches Institute fur Normung (DIN) as a set of standards so the consumer could easily identify products designed for quality over price. This standard was only to apply to stereo units that passed the standard in 1966. The specifications still exist, however it only took a short time for the marketing companies to play with the term hifi. This was a code of conduct that would be a valuable tool for the customer today. The term hifi or high fidelity loosely is about the minimum musical performance that covers the frequency response and dynamic range of music to satisfy a faithful reproduction. A frustrating aspect is to work with customers where music listening has disappeared because the “magic has gone “with the belief the home theatre system would provide both solutions. In most cases a budget made satellite speaker that cost only a few dollars to make cannot replace a set of speakers that is designed to cover all musical frequencies. Does this mean you have to return to the large boxes? Not necessarily. While well engineered small enclosures do carry a price premium, many of the quality speakers have a small floor or shelf footprint. We can look forward to 2013 with theatre receivers to work as a serious stereo product. The competitive or affordable price has restricted many people from owning such a device until now. Speakers may be the most important purchase of your sound system but without the engine to drive it, namely the amplifier, the “magic cannot exist. 2013 will bring the “magic of high fidelity back in a more affordable way.

Lee Kernaghan is a veteran at the festival, playing to thousands of loyal fans.
COUNTRY music fans are currently flocking to Tamworth for the Annual Tamworth Country Music Festival. The festival attracts crowds of thousands, with accommodation booking out years ahead and locals renting out their houses to fellow bootscooters. The debate as to when the festival began is still ongoing - 1968 or 1973? Certainly the talent quest, the main event of the festival, has been in full swing since 1968. The festival proudly boasts that this is where stars like Keith Urban and Adam Harvey began their paths to fame - right here in Australia.

Looking for a new family pet or best friend to love? Albury Wodonga Animal Rescue is here to help, with a variety of puppies and dogs waiting to be re-homed with a loving new owner. Most dogs are unclaimed from the Albury Pound or are surrendered by members of the public. Each dog has passed a temperament test before being placed into foster care. The adoption fee for dogs and puppies is $340 plus $40 for council registration if adopted in NSW. The fee includes a veterinary health check, microchipping, desexing, C5 vaccination, flea treatment and intestinal worming. For cats and kittens the fee is $200 which includes veterinary health check, microchipping, desexing, F4 vaccination, flea treatment and intestinal worming. Albury Wodonga Animal Rescue endeavours to carefully match dogs with their new owners to ensure dogs are placed in the best environment for their future wellbeing.

Rentals tight here
Rental properties in Wodonga are at a minimum. WHILE the availability of rental homes continues to improve across Victoria, Wodonga, along with Bendigo has bucked the trend, with a minimal availability. A vacancy rate of 2.3 per cent was recorded in Melbourne and 2.6 per cent in regional Victoria over the month of December last year. Within Melbourne the highest level of vacancies was in the middle suburbs, where a rate of 2.9 per cent was recorded.
This is well above the 2.3 per cent in November and 1.2 per cent a year ago. The inner suburbs and those along the Mornington Peninsula recorded a vacancy rate of 2.5 per cent while outer suburbs recorded a contraction to 1.3 per cent. The improved level of vacancies has not yet translated into lower rents being asked by landlords, however if the trend continues, as it is expected to, it will in time result in overall rents either stabilising or
reducing in nominal terms. REIV research indicates that they have generally fallen in real terms as the higher availability of rental homes has improved. It must be noted that there will be local areas and specific property types where there may still be a low level of vacancies. In regional Victoria the level of vacancies remained comparatively high in most regional centres. A vacancy rate of three per cent was re-
corded in both Geelong and Ballarat. In Shepparton and Warrnambool the rate was just above four per cent. The two exceptions to this were Bendigo and Wodonga, where the vacancy rate was 0.8 per cent. The median rent for a house in Melbourne increased incrementally from $380 per week in November to $381 in December. In regional Victoria it was stable at $300.

COMFORTABLE family living is on offer with this beautifully presented four-bedroom Wodonga home. There’s room for the growing family, space for relaxed entertaining and storage for the boat or caravan, all within easy reach of everything Wodonga has to offer. Street appeal is ample with well-established gardens and tasteful lace-work dressing the front of the verandah. Inside a slate foyer greets the prospective owners with a spacious formal lounge room to the right. Here you’ll find a feature brick wall with large open fireplace for those cosy winter nights entertaining guests. A gas wall furnace is also included for convenience. The informal living areas are also of ample size and well designed for family life. An updated kitchen includes an electric wall oven, gas cooktop, dishwasher, walk-in pantry and abundant storage via overhead cupboards. A breakfast bar adjoins the family room, providing space for that quick early-morning meal or cuppa. The family room also boasts a brick feature wall and ample space to relax. A ‘weatherwall’ air-conditioner by all accounts easily keeps the temperature at a comfortable level. Another gas wall furnace is included in

the spacious dining area to maintain the temperature in the cooler months. The four double bedrooms all include builtin robes, with internal drawers for tidy storage, while the master boasts an ensuite bathroom and an air-conditioner. A bath is included in the main bathroom with a wide vanity and separate toilet. Outside the property begins to shine even further, with a well-designed backyard taking advantage of the space provided. A beautiful paved, undercover fernery has been created with built-in barbecue and open fireplace for the perfect weekend entertainment and alfresco dining. The oversized double garage was originally designed to include a pottery and boasts enough space and clearance to house a caravan behind a sliding, remote door. The extra length allows for storage without compromising space for the family vehicles. A rear roller door offers even more parking options, whether for a boat, a trailer or just easy access when gardening. And for the green thumb, two garden sheds are in place and the well-established grounds are a breeze to maintain, leaving more time to enjoy the important things in life. The home has been lovingly maintained by the original owners and offers the perfect ’move in and enjoy’ experience.

THE Border was left in shock in June with the passing of one of its favourite sons. Allen McCowan was well respected and loved by all who knew him and many hearts were left broken with his untimely death. Al was a character, not just in his beloved basketball but life in general. His infectious smile touched many and his generous approach to life on the Border could never be underestimated. As a keen, young baller Al was given the opportunity to play for the Bandits here on the Border and fell in love with the area, the people and his wife Caroline. Al has been sorely missed. BORDER cyclists, Jess Laws and Craig Arnel celebrated with success at the Victorian Masters track cycling championships in Melbourne in February, returning with a swag of medals to their credit. Laws managed a clean sweep of the 35-39 age group, bringing home four golds from her four events, time trial, pursuit, sprint and scratch race, breaking an Australian record along the way in the flying 200-metre sprint with a time of 12.26. Arnel, competing in the 30-35 age group brought home two bronze medals for the sprint and time trial events. The success showed the continuing growth of the sport in the region.
Claim your FREE listing now! THE Border basketball community was buzzing back in September when its beloved Bandits brought home the SEABL championship. After a decade in the wilderness rookie coach Brad Chalmers had achieved the unthinkable, taking his team from cellar dwellers to champions in one tough season. “It was tough – it was a grind, it was physical, it was competitive,” Chalmers said of the victory. “It looked like we were going to struggle a bit, but we kept battling and battling and we played well down the stretch and made some big plays defensively. “We earned it – in the last month in particular, I felt we were the best team in it. “We’re now a national SEABL champion … I couldn’t be happier.”

THE eyes of the nation were on the Border back in July when V8Xtra came town. The national TV program takes a look behind the scenes at the V8 Supercar series and booked into the Brand Jones Racing team garage for filming. Team boss Brad Jones was expecting around 200 fans and was surprised to close to 300 from the Border and farther afield cram into the garage. Jones said it showed the passion for the sport here on the Border, with the well informed fans firing plenty of questions throughout the evening.

Laura’s off to Canada By TREVOR JACKSON
HAVING recently returned with a second place finish at State competition in Bendigo, Wodonga athlete Laura Collins is pumped. But it’s not so much about the personal best time she achieved at the meet, but more about the opportunity to head overseas to compete in Canada. Laura competes in the multi-discipline sport of heptathlon and is consistently improving. A heavy workload sees the 16-year-old training most days, three of those with a coach, as well as competing in local and other Victorian club meets and training alone. The opportunity arose to travel to Canada with a sporting trip to compete at two meets. And Laura is certainly keen to grab the chance. “I think it would be an amazing experience to represent Wodonga, she said. “To have that experience, to try something different, to compete against girls different than I normally do would be amazing. Laura said she hopes to “go places with athletics and has a long-term goal of competing at the Olympics. “It’s something I’ve always grown up with, she said. “I always loved doing all the events at the sports carnivals and when my coach said I should try the multi events it just made sense. Laura’s mother, Helen, is very supportive, and despite the cost involved is adamant to give her daughter the opportunity to compete overseas. “Her goal is to be a professional athlete, Helen said. “Of course you don’t know how that will end up but she is improving all the time. “Just last weekend we went to State competition in Bendigo and she finished second, including a personal best. We’re saving at the moment to go to Adelaide for Nationals in February. We’ve been to Bendigo and Collingwood for club meets. “She has the willpower to work hard and I don’t want her to lose that drive - I think this will keep that going. As a single parent Helen is now looking to raise close to $7000 to allow Laura to take the trip. And while it may seem like an expensive exercise, Helen has a simple philosophy. “It is a struggle but she’s committed to it, she said. “You can’t knock a kid who’s committed and serious about it. “I take her to training three or four days a week and she trains the other days on her own. “She is committed.
Wolves dominate
Athletes on the streets
YOU might be wondering why so many young athletes are wandering the streets on the Border at the moment. It’s because the Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup is back in town and with it comes 72 teams from Australia, New Zealand and Oceania, making it one of the region’s biggest annual events. Up to 1500 players, parents and officials have converged on the Border for the competition with teams competing in U/14, U/16 and U/18 age groups. 2013 is the 27th anniversary of the event, which has doubled in size since it was first contested by teams from New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia in 1985. And it also provides opportunities for young players in the region. While a number of Border players have been selected to play for their state, others have been selected for coaching or managing roles with two under 14 teams, one boys and one girls, who have also been given the opportunity to compete. The competition was officially opened at Wodonga Sports and Leisure Centre on Monday, with games continuing throughout the week there and at Lauren Jackson Sports Centre and Scots School in Albury. If your children enjoy basketball it’s well worth getting down to one of the stadiums to check out some of the best young players in the country. Entry to games is free up until Saturday, when grand finals will take place at Albury.
Border youngsters have been given the opportunity to compete against the best in the Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup.

THE Wodonga Lady Wolves pictured above, have continued on their winning way with a demoralising 79-25 win over Echuca Lady Pirates on the weekend in the Country Basketball League. Coach Doug Polmear was encouraged to see all players contributing to the score and said the emphatic victory was due to all-over court pressure. “Our defensive pressure was excellent for the entire game, he said. “All players were accountable for their own player on defence and backed each other up in help if needed. This allowed us to transition into offence on many occasions. And it was the offence that really buried the Lady Pirates in what Polmear describe as the team’s best offensive game to date. “I was happy with our offence, he said. “We were more disciplined and patient and controlled the ball well while we waited for the open player. The pressure applied by the Lady Wolves created further opportunities, causing many turnovers, while the younger members of the squad contributed well. “Our young players all contributed good minutes, scoring some excellent points and stealing some fast breaks, thus further strengthening our prospects leading into finals, Polmear said. “This was one of our best all-round efforts but there is still room for improvement.
