Dumping on Salvos By TREVOR JACKSON OVER $1 million was bled from the coffers of the Salvation Army stores in Victoria last financial year, and Wodonga is a major contributor to the problem. The trend of dropping items at stores out of business hours continues to cause the charity group problems,

with the Wodonga store front again lined with items on the weekend. Donations left on weekends or nights, while in good condition at the time, could well be damaged due to unforeseen wet weather, leaving the Salvos no option but to dispose of them at their own cost. Often items in poor or damaged condition are left at stores out of hours,

with people thinking it’s an easy way to dispose of their unwanted, damaged goods, rather than pay for disposal. But another disturbing trend is many serial offenders have been noticed on CCTV “shopping” out of hours, taking the quality donations and on-selling them through the internet, at trash and treasure markets or car-boot sales. Whatever the case may be, it’s

either costing the Salvos money that could be better directed to helping families in need, or robbing them of quality items to sell at affordable prices, again to those who need the assistance. The message from the Salvos’ Victorian sustainability and waste manager Donald Munro is simple - donate items during business hours, and don’t

donate damaged goods. “Please do donate, but come to us when we’re open so we can take your goods and make sure they’re put to good use,” Mr Munro said. “If you leave good items after hours, someone else will probably help themselves to them.” Continued on page 2

DUMPED... Goods dropped out of hours at the Wodonga Salvation Army store clearly show opened boxes, possibly rummaged through for quality saleable items. From page 1 Mr Munro said the cost of disposal had become a major issue for the organisation. “Wodonga is one of our worst sites for it, he said. “It would be in our top 10 in terms of the amount of money we spend having to get rid of items we can’t sell. Mr Munro said he couldn’t say for sure whether Wodonga residents were taking quality items from the donation piles to sell rather than use, but he says he’s seen the trend in other Victorian areas - and photos taken Sunday by NewsWeekly clearly show boxes that haven been opened and obviously rummaged through. “From a Salvation Army perspective, if somebody helps themselves to bedding or clothing because they are desperately in need, really, we don’t have a problem with that - that’s what we are about. We won’t make a song and dance about that, he said. “But the reality is, we know people who are taking things are regulars. They rummage through and take out the brand clothing and quality items they know they can sell. “They wouldn’t steal from a poor person, but that’s exactly what they’re doing. People wanting to donate larger items to the Salvos in Wodonga who may not have the capacity to do so can call 13SALVOS to arrange a free pick-up.

LAST week we spoke about volunteers and their value to society. It’s interesting to note volunteers come in many forms, from helping to raise money for worthy causes, assisting with the local sporting team, or in this case, giving their time for a wonderful cause – The Salvation Army. Much of the Salvation Army staff consists of volunteers. They give their time free of charge to help out, so others in the community can benefit from the good work of this long-time organisation. And then come Monday morning, they face a major clean-up - the result of items dumped at the front of the store out of hours, sometimes strewn across the lawns, and often only good for garbage, due to rain or thoughtless people leaving damaged goods for the Salvos to dispose of. We were shocked to discover Wodonga to be among the top 10 contributors to this major issue for the organisation, and even more shocked to discover it cost the Salvos over $1m last year to dispose of these useless goods. Sorry, but we don’t understand. Why would somebody dump damaged goods at a Salvos store? Would you purchase such items from a secondhand store for your family? And then there’s the situation where people are “shopping out of hours, rummaging through the donated goods for items they can take home free of charge – items that are meant for those who actually need assistance. Maybe we are a bit naive, but we thought as a progressive community here on the Border, we were better than that.

Celebration of culture By TREVOR JACKSON

A COMBINATION of fun, culture and entertainment is coming to the Border. The inaugural Bundyi Festival kicks off Wednesday 21 November and runs through to Sunday 25 November. And it’s sure to provide plenty of opportunities for the public to participate and share in the local Indigenous culture. Chair of the Community Working Party, Valda Murray said the actual translation of the word Bundyi is sharing, which will be the major focus of the festival. “A lot of it is letting the mainstream know there is an Aboriginal community that is alive and well in Albury Wodonga, Ms Murray said. “We’re wanting to come and share what’s happening, what we do locally. “It’s about breaking down barriers and making sure we’re not forgotten, that we’re part of the community. We want to help grow the community and share what we have. A highlight of the festival will be the contemporary Bangarra Dance Company when they perform at the Albury Entertainment Centre on Wednesday. Bangarra is recognised as Australia’s leading Indigenous performing arts company, touring both na-

tionally and internationally, combining the spirituality of traditional culture with modern story-telling. A Close the Gap forum will be held, MC’d by comedian Kevin Kropinyeri. Kropinyeri is one of the fastest rising stars in Australian comedy. He’s sure have the audience in fits of laughter as he shares tales of growing up, marriage and the particular challenges of life as an Aboriginal Australian family man. Ms Murray said the forum would focus on issues facing the Indigenous community and look for suitable outcomes. “We’ll be looking at all the different layers and platforms in the different areas of health, employment, youth, she said. “We’re hoping to have different students come along throughout the day ... they are the leaders of the future and we want and value their input. Another highlight of the festival will be a Shine a Light on Lung Cancer vigil to be held at the Wonga Wetlands before the screening an open-air screening of the movie The Sapphires. The festival will conclude on Sunday at the wood-fired oven in Hovell Tree Park. Further information is available on the AlburyCity website.

ONE Border resident says he and his family are living in fear after three home invasions in the last year and a half. The resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, says thieves have targeted his home, resorting to extreme measures to gain entry. “The first time they gained entry through a laundry door that we must have left unlocked, he told NewsWeekly this week. “We were asleep inside at the time. “The second time they broke a glass panel next to the front door and reached in to open the door. He said four offenders were seen leaving his property by neighbours. The resident then installed a deadlock to prevent a recurrence, but that didn’t deter the offenders. “They tried to break in through the front again but couldn’t open the door, he said. “They must have gone home and

picked up an axe, came back and smashed the sliding door. “My wife and children must have scared them off when they returned home because the axe was left on the floor. The resident said he was frustrated police could do little to apprehend the offenders. He was concerned about the safety of his family, with people using what he described as “weapons to gain entry. “Someone’s going to get hurt, he said. “What if someone’s home and they have an axe - it’s a weapon. “This has to stop. It’s just not good enough.

WORKOUT... Participants are pumping it out in a step class at Wodonga Sports and Leisure Centre.

Measured moves By KRYSTEN MANUEL

THE popularity of group fitness has grown substantially in recent years, with gyms across the Border noticing a spike in numbers for group classes. But what are we getting for all our hard work? A study by CSU Orange endeavours to uncover which group fitness classes give the best workouts. CSU’s Anatomy and Physiology lecturer, Dr James Wickham will measure the muscle response, heart rate and caloric expenditure of 10

volunteers as they each take a step class, stationary bike class and an aerobic weights class. The research will use 16 wireless surface electrodes which are attached with double-sided tape and each relay 2000 measurements per second. “The companies design them (workouts) to deliver an over-all workout so they don’t over-tax a particular muscle more than any other,” Dr Wickham said. “But I’m not aware of any research that has directly

compared muscle activity and caloric expenditure between group exercise programs. “This research will pinpoint the differences between the classes so participants know which class burns the most calories, or which class is most effective for working a particular muscle group.” Local personal and group fitness trainers are not convinced the results of the study will be overly valuable to the average gym-goer. As each individual is different, with different goals, potential and limitations, can it really be measured? Does it really need to be? “The benefits of a group class depend on the persons goals and if they’ve had an injury,” Ace personal trainer

Julie Pearson explains. “If they’re a young fit person they can do body attack and that would be great but if they have issues with knees and ankles and stuff they’d probably do RPM.” Wodonga Sports and Leisure Centre personal trainer Chrissy Grayland agrees. “It depends on what they want, what they’re capable of doing and levels - for example, if someone is a beginner I wouldn’t send them into a body attack class.” But if you had to answer? It’s unanimous. “The class that burns the most calories is body attack,” Fernwood personal trainer Janine King said. “Body attack is a high intensity program so you’ll definitely be burning fat,” Ms Grayland adds. “It’s high intensity interval training, you get full benefits from it.”

“It’s really difficult for gay people to come out and not feel like they’re being discriminated against.” Gary Hayward will be a key note speaker at the event and hopes to attract some local political attention. “I’m really proud that they asked me to do it,” he said. “As Australian’s, we should all have the same rights. “Rhiannon started this so that the younger generation can really see a difference and eventually have the same rights. “I think a peaceful rally would show the government. Sophie Mirabella said that none of the constituents were even interested in same sex marriages. “So I think the rally can show her different.” The equal love rally will be held at QE2II Square between 1pm and 3pm this Saturday 17 November.

Pets on parade A DAY of free entertainment is promised this Sunday for the whole family, including the furry ones, when Pet’s Day Out returns to Hovell Tree Park. This year’s event features obedience training demonstrations and advice from local trainer Brydie Charlesworth, free pet health checks, free dog and cat microchipping for Albury residents, a dog wash, pet parade competitions and product samples and giveaways. AlburyCity senior ranger Darren McFarlane is encouraging Albury’s animal lovers to make the most of

the day. “We really want people to embrace the message of responsible pet ownership and Pet’s Day Out is a great place to start,” he said. “There is going to be heaps of information and advice for pet owners and we’ll offer free dog and cat microchipping for Albury residents which is a saving of up to $150. “While it’s a day devoted to taking care of your pet, it’s also a lot of fun. We’ve got heaps of competitions including cutest pet, tallest pet and fluffiest pet.” The day begins at 10am.

ALBURY Wodonga will host its first “equal love rally” this Saturday. The idea can be attributed to Rhiannon Konigson, a straight woman who believes it’s unfair that her gay friends don’t have the same rights to get married as she and her fiance. “It was mine and my friend Evan’s idea,” Ms Konigson said. “We were just talking about the one in Melbourne and how inconvenient it was that we couldn’t make it and then I said we should have one here, so we’re doing it.” Ms Konigson has been overwhelmed with support and has high hopes that the rally will help the gay community remember they are supported by straight people, too. “I’m there to support them,” she said. “Hopefully the gay community can feel like they’re not alone, that they can be comfortable with who they are.

Lock-up warning By TREVOR JACKSON

A SUDDEN spike in crime on Monday in Albury has left police to again reinforce the importance of locking doors and windows in homes and ensuring cars are secure. During the 24 hours to 6am Tuesday, 12 break and enter offences were reported in the Albury area. In the majority of cases entry to houses has been gained via unlocked or unsecured windows and doors. Property such as wallets, mobile phones, jewellery and cash were targeted. During the same period eight cars were broken into in the Lavington and Thurgoona area. Property such as mobile phones, wallets and small electrical items were targeted.

Albury’s Inspector Tony Moodie said while similar spikes had been witnessed in the past, the police weren’t impressed with this latest crime spree. “What happened Monday night and Tuesday morning supports the theory that someone’s out there and very active at the moment,” he said. Insp. Moodie said residents need to remain alert and look for anomalies in their local are. He said in some situations houses may be targeted by thieves, and with that came a greater risk of being caught. “What I’d say is be aware of what’s around you and your neighbour’s house,” he suggested. “If you see something that doesn’t look right, or you see

someone in an area where you think they shouldn’t be, get straight onto the police so we can check it out and find out why the person is there. “These people are going to the house, so there has to be a time when they’re at risk of being caught - that’s when they’re going towards the house or leaving afterwards. “If they are doing that, there’s more opportunity for members of the public to see these people watching an area, or sitting in a strange car in a small cul-de-sac, or something similar.” Those wishing to report a crime are reminded the police Facebook page is not monitored 24 hours-a-day, and should ring the police direct, or in the case of an emergency, ring 000.

Walking the talk on veteran trees SOME of the oldest trees in Beechworth will soon be making way for a new generation of young healthy successors. Many of the older trees have reached a time when they need to be removed and the community is being invited to a tree walk to help educate them in the care and removal of the icons. “It’s a fine balance to get right, that is, caring for our ‘old soldiers’ with respect but letting them go when they are beyond help,” chairperson of the Beechworth Trees Consultative Group, Jan Milhinch said. “One of the best ways to raise awareness is for residents

and members of the tree group to walk and talk together about specific trees in Beechworth and to discuss options for the care of these valued symbols of our town. “I urge residents to come and join the group on the walk and talk to us about choices we have for the future of our leafy streets. “We have a lot of professional expertise on this group and we will be sharing our knowledge and seeking input from those walking with us.” The walk will take about an hour, starting at 6pm at the rotunda in the Town Hall Gardens, Loch Street, Beechworth, on Thursday 29 November.

Em for mobility By KRYSTEN MANUEL

MUSICIANS across the Border are pulling together in a desperate bid to raise money for their friend and fellow musician, Emily Kirk. Local performers including Danny Phegan, Brett Shannon, Infinity Duo, Korey Livy, Paul Gibbs, Pete Denahy, Lousie Egan, William Bonnici, The Northern People and guest performers Sharyn Bliston and the Australian Cher Tribute Show will be belting it out at the Albury SS&A Club next Wednesday. Emily, 14, has a rare form of muscular dystrophy and is currently recovering from major surgery. “Emily has been in Melbourne since 23 October having rods put in her back to straighten her up, but she’s had complications,” Emily’s father, Paul Kirk, explained.

“She had a rough trot but she’s coming good now.” Emily has dreams of one day singing in Nashville, and is known around the local area for regularly performing in and winning local competitions, including the Wodonga City Council’s Red Carpet Awards. “Emily sings with a lot of the professionals around the place and has started winning a few competitions,” Paul proudly said. “She won the busking comp at the Man from Snowy River and went to Tamworth- it was one of her dreams to get up to Tamworth. “We’re hoping to get up there again next year but it will depend on her recovery, if we’ve got a new vehicle and if we can afford it. The Kirk family have their fingers

crossed that enough money will be raised to get Emily completely mobile. Emily remains hopeful that enough money will be raised to support not just her health and mobility, but her dreams. “It would make it so much easier to get to places with all the singing I do,” she said. “I would love to go back to Tamworth. I loved it last time so I’m really hoping to get back there.” Em for Mobility is on 21 November at 6.30pm at the SS&A Club. Tickets for $55 include a two course meal and show, or $25 for just the show and can be purchased from the SS&A Club by calling 6041 2222. MOBILITY... Border residents are being urged to get behind local talent, Emily Kirk.

Fresh Authentic Indian Cuisine A BEER or two after work (especially on a Friday afternoon) is a tradition most Australians eagerly indulge. But it doesn’t take long to get the munchies, and for me, peanuts and the usual bar snacks just don’t cut it! Shiraaz Indian Restaurant at the Lavington five-ways has the answer- the “Casual Bar.” Set aside from the main dining area, the Casual Bar is a place where patrons can relax, socialise, unwind over a drink or two, and enjoy the extremely well priced, quality food that Shiraaz is known for. Celebrating their first birthday, chefs Jatinder Singh Chahal and Darren Mahey have put their heads together and created a new mouthwatering menu to ensure that every guest becomes a return guest. “I have worked for all the Indian restaurants in Albury so I have a bit of an idea of what I can do best,” Mr Mahey said. “I came from Melbourne … I have a lot of experience in international cooking,” Mr Chahal adds. Aside from fantastic service, patrons can expect high quality, exotic food, traditionally made from scratch, with no artificial colours or flavours. Unfortunately, Asian cuisine, while delicious and tasty, is known for its colour and flavour additives these days. So it’s no wonder Shiraaz prides itself on creating flavour from the

very root of their ingredients. “We don’t use any artificial colours or flavours - that’s something different,” owner Varidhi Mahey said. “So our chicken tikka is not that red because we use the original flavours that will give it colour.” Aside from the entree or Casual Bar menu, Shiraaz offers a buffet that includes a vegetarian and nonvegetarian entree, lamb or beef mains, vegetarian mains, butter chicken and rice. To enjoy this sort of volume and choice, one would expect to pay upwards of $40, but at Shiraaz, it’s all you can eat for just $20! And when your bellies are happily rumbling from “eyes too big for your stomach syndrome,” enjoy a cup of traditional marsala tea. “It will cleanse your palate after a heavy meal,” Ms Mahey said. Whether its a beer and a bite after work, a romantic dinner or function for many, you can count on Shiraaz to provide exquisite, sophisticated, unique food and unforgettable service. Ms Mahey recommends the nargisi kofta for something tasty, filling and unique to Indian restaurants in the Albury Wodonga region. I know where I’ll be heading for this Fridays after-work wind down! Visit 2/ 484 Union Road, North Albury or call 6040 1268 for take away and enquiries.

Rick rocks the Border By KRYSTEN MANUEL

BELIEVE it or not, Rick Astley, in all his eighties glory, will be rocking the Border at the end of this month. For those who remember the eighties, they will clearly recall Astley’s synthesised eighties classics. For those like myself, who were born in the eighties, we may need a little reminder. Rick Astley is a British pop singer who made his mark in 1987 with the single Never Gonna Give You Up. The single hit number one in 25 countries, including Australia, and was one of one of eight singles to reach the top 10 in the UK - a record. After selling 40 million records worldwide, Astley decided to hang up the ray bans and jeans/ jean shirt combination and retire in 1993 at the ripe old age of 27.

Not bad for a choir boy. In 2007, Astley made an unanticipated comeback with what’s known as Rickrolling. Rickrolling is an internet phenomenon that led unsuspecting internet surfers to a film clip of Never Gonna Give You Up when clicking a seemingly innocent hyper link. In 2010, Astley released his first single in 17 years, Lights Out. Though I think it’s safe to say, you probably won’t be Rick Rolled by this one. Now, for the first time in 23 long years, Astley is returning to his doting Australian fans and we don’t even have to travel to Melbourne for it. He’s appearing at the Kinross Woolshed on Thursday 29 November at 8pm. Tickets are $69.90, Call 6043 1155 for more details.

Christmas tree of hope EVER spent a Christmas without a gift under the tree? The reality is, many Australian families don’t have the funds to celebrate what most of us take for granted. It is estimated more than two million people in Australia, one in 10 of those children, live in poverty, and this time of year the demand for assistance spikes. But UnitingCare Wodonga has again joined forces with Target to provide an opportunity for those who wish to help. Now in its 21st year, the UnitingCare Wodonga Operation Santa Christmas Gift Appeal offers gifts

or gift cards to be purchased in Target stores and distributed to those in need. The program will be launched on Tuesday 20 October at the Target store in Wodonga. Members of the community just need to look for the big red Christamas trees in store. All gifts go to those in the local community where they are donated. Last year 81,463 gifts and $149,590 in gift cards were donated and distributed. The team is hoping to top that figure this year, with an aim of 100,000 gifts and $200,000 of gift cards.

CULTURE... Hista, Echo and Annin Soldier Wolf were photographed in Albury this week. Picture: KRYSTEN MANUEL.

Cultural exchange By KRYSTEN MANUEL ANNIN and Cathi Soldier Wolf have recently relocated their family to the Border region so their children can become better acquainted with their Australian heritage. Hista and Echo Soldier Wolf have spent their whole lives on an Indian reserve in Wyoming, America, and have a sound knowledge and appreciation for their American Indian roots.

“We lived on the Wind River Indian Reservation. The main town is called Riverton, which is basically in the middle of the reservation,” Cathi Soldier Wolf explained when NewsWeekly caught up with them this week. “We just wanted the kids to learn their Australian heritage of their other half. “And we love it at Mt Beauty. It’s idyllic for the kids to get that good old wholesome Australian upbringing, and its certainly not as cold as the mountains

in Wyoming.” Cathi is from the Northern Territory and is now keen for her children to embrace Australia’s cultural side, as well as impart their American Indian culture. “We’re going to bring our culture over here to share it with others through our bead work, art and craft, dancing, Annin’s storytelling and taekwondoeveryone in our family does taekwondo as well,” she said.

MILESTONE... Father and daughter, Gary and Melissa Wise reached their 50th donation recently.

In good company DONATING blood doesn’t have to be a lonely experience. Albury Blood Donor Centre has seen many school groups, companies and even family units arrive together to offer the life-saving liquid. Recently father and daughter, Gary and Melissa Wise, passed a major milestone when they both lined up for their 50th donation. Melissa began donating when her mum passed away from leukaemia 18 years ago. Over 30 per cent of the Australian Red Cross Blood Services collections go to treat cancer patients. And three generations of Barrows men recently supported each other and the service in a joint effort to help out. David Barrows has a remarkable record as a volunteer life-saver, having rolled up his

sleeves more than 140 times. And he was recently joined by son Roger and grandson Lochie. The blood service is urging more grandfathers, dads and sons to get together and donate in a bid to boost the number of men giving blood. Blood Service spokesperson Cathy Chapman said more men are needed to become donors because their veins are well suited to donations of blood plasma. “This November we’re calling on all willing and able male donors to make a plasma donation and come to the rescue of patients in need,” she said. Plasma is extracted from blood either during or after a blood donation and can help cancer patients, trauma victims, burn victims and many others in need.

“Plasma is used to make up to 17 life-saving treatments, which makes it as valuable as liquid gold to patients,” Mrs Chapman said. “Thanks to medical advancements we are living for longer, which means more and more Australians will need the benefits of life-saving plasma treatments. “With the demand for plasma expected to double in the next 10 years, we need more men to step up and start donating plasma to ensure we have enough for our patients.” Mrs Chapman said donating blood was easy and only took an hour of your time. While just one in three of us will need blood in our lifetime, only one in 30 actually donates. To make an appointment to give blood, call 13 14 95 or visit donateblood.com.au

High Street Wodonga Support these local businesses

How High Street has changed By KRYSTEN MANUEL LONG-TIME locals of Wodonga (and even Albury) love comparing the “then and now” photos of much loved iconic streets such as High Street. Looking at pictures gathered over the last century, we can still see the skeletons of the street we know so well, though it’s safe to say that a lot has changed. “Twenty to 40 odd years ago that side of the railway line had its own newsagent, which was in the Manns complex in High Street - Manns ran right around to South Street and Hovel Street!” long time local Allan Hodgson recalls. “Twenty odd years ago, there was the Termo hotel – an old, established hotel. “Osburne Street used to continue on over what we used to call “the hill” and down to what was known as Belvoire Park, which is now Sumsion Gardens. “Originally it was a little cricket ground. “There was the clay pigeon shooting that used to go on down there over the lake. So you’d be busy playing cricket while the guns were firing at clay targets. “Twenty to 30 odd years ago, the buildings on the corners down there weren’t operating as what they are now - they were banks and the post office. “People would normally shop both sides of the railway line. When the banks and the post office relocated to the Southern end of High Street, that made the people flow a little thin.” A local of over 60 years, Mr Hodgson is excited at the direction High Street shopping is heading. “It’s great to see that end of High Street is slowly but surely reinventing itself with more shops spread along that particular strip, and a greater diversity of shops. “Now that the railway line has closed, that in itself will contribute to the reinvention of the Northern end of High Street.”

By KRYSTEN MANUEL THAT’S localism in the southern end of High Street – it’s something these business owners believe in and practice whole-heartedly. “It’s one rule that I have in the shop - unless its not produced here, if it’s not local I’m not gonna have it,” owner of Hook and Cleaver Butchers, Rex McKay said. “We get all our vegies from around the corner to put in all of our stir fries and kebabs because they’re a better product - they’re all home grown. “It’s a better product because I know it hasn’t been cold stored like a lot of supermarkets. To get fresh vegetables you have to have in season vegetables, some of the supermarkets are selling stuff out of season six months.” And Rex isn’t the only one. “We support bush idol at the Man From Snowy River Festival, the Mitta Muster, Tallangatta battle of the bands and more,” owner of Megas Music, Peter Gleeson said. “It’s good to give local kids the opportunity to play who wouldn’t normally be able to, you wouldn’t believe what some of these kids can do. It produces more local talent to put back into the community.” Mr McKay agrees that localism is more of a cycle than simply giving back to the community. “A lot of these people (his suppliers) come in and buy off me too, so if I scratch their back they scratch my back.” In fact, the majority of businesses in South High Street proudly and actively promote localism, and you can too. By supporting these businesses, you are supporting a trickle-on effect that could affect hundreds of local people, making for a more tight knit, positive and affluent community.

With so many hours each day spent on our feet, it’s important to take a little time to keep them in good shape. And you don’t need a referral from a doctor to see a podiatrist, so if you’re having foot problems, don’t procrastinate - make an appointment to see a professional today.

FOR those ladies out there who wear high heels on a night out, here’s some advice from Dr Michael Kinchington (PhD) from the Australian Podiatry Association to help avoid foot and back problems. Feet swell throughout the day, especially in the warmer festive months. Buying shoes later in the day or early evening will help you have a better fitting shoe and less foot pain. If feet get sore when wearing party shoes, there are a range of streamlined supports for the arches in your feet. Some insoles support the front of the foot - good for when literally standing on tip toes for long hours. Others support the arch of the foot - an area that, when supported, helps overall postural comfort. Good posture is the key to wearing high heels well. Keep both feet firmly on the ground when you’re standing. Try to avoid leaning on one foot, so your shoes take your weight equally. Keep your tummy taut so your muscles keep your back supported and stand tall. When the opportunity presents, sit down and give your feet a break. For the walk home take a pair of ballet flats or comfy runners. For the novice, practice wearing high heels at home before wearing them out. This will help you get used to the style of shoe, extra height and shifted balance. If you’re in pain, take your shoes off!

Healthy Christmas WITH the festive season approaching, it’s time to think about your health. High consumptions of food and alcohol are common this time of year, but it’s also worth thinking about the health of your feet. Being kind to your feet and giving them a rest is the key. During the summer months

we’re often on our feet more hours each day, attending social events, maybe enjoying sporting activities such as beach volleyball, or simply out having fun. This can lead to foot pain, which can often lead to back pain. Without enough rest, or correct footwear for the particular

FLYING HIGH... Albury performer, Stuart Christie is ready to entertain Border audiences in A Little Bit of Sssh

Bit of shhh, please A LITTLE bit of shhh! As the Albury LibraryMuseum is dramatically transformed this weekend for an actionpacked spectacle that includes circus, live music, sideshow, comedy and performance acts. “It’s a musical incorporated cabaret of circus and variety acts,” performer Stuart Christie explains. “We’re kind of creating a venue inside the Albury museum, so it takes it out of its everyday setting. “There will be multiple stages so the audience won’t be lulled into a comfort of just expecting it from one side.

“There will be a band that will be interacting throughout the performance, so its not just straight variety. “It’s an interesting avant-garde circus that’s got a tinge of dark humour and cheekiness in regards to gender, as well some purely excellent skills from a few people.” Excellent skills indeed- The show features local and international artists who have performed with companies from Circus Oz, Tom Tom Crew, Acrobat and Circus Quirkus. “I don’t think Albury’s really seen a cabaret of this quality,” Mr Christie said. “The quality of the performance will

Box office Endearing Psychos By KRYSTEN MANUEL MOVIE: Seven Psychopaths DURATION: 109 mins THIS is a story about friendship. Extremely dark, hilarious, bloodsoaked friendship. Marty (Colin Farrell) is a writer whose life focuses solely around finishing his screenplay, Seven Psychopaths, he just can’t think up the psychopaths. His friend, Billy (Sam Rockwell) is fully on board with the screenplay and will stop at nothing to help his friend develop his characters. Even if

Sam Rockwell’s performance is the show-stopper- the cherry on top of the sarcastic sundae of controversial characters. Slowly, Rockwell draws the audience away from normal social boundaries of humour and by the end of the film, has us laughing and shaking our heads as his character continues to offend and cross the line every time he opens his mouth. Twisted, sharp and witty, this is one for intelligent viewers with a broad sense of humour.

he needs to become one of the psychopaths. He is also a part-time dog thief. Hans (Christopher Walken) is Billy’s partner in the dog thieving industry, and manages to make the list of psychopaths for slitting his throat in an attempt to follow his daughter’s killer to hell. Home cinema evolved Look at your needs and try to plan five years ahead. Models made to compete on price frequently appear obsolete in a short period, creating disillusionment to the purchaser of the system. Part of the preparation is to ensure ethernet connectivity to the point of where your electronics will be located. This allows you to access the music and movie streaming, Skype, and a myriad of other applications that have become available. Your choice of router is also important - the stronger the better.

THE home cinema’s role has constantly evolved from a room to specifically watch videos, to a complete multimedia concept. If you are contemplating a multimedia entertainment room there are a number of pre-purchase decisions that should be contemplated prior to your final choice of product. Acoustics are the number one issue; the correct advice can make a $5000 package perform well above its weight or a very expensive investment that fails to meet expectations. The quality of fittings need to be adequate, not over the top, but to reflect the standard of the system you are installing.

Music streaming, podcasts, internet radio or capturing your music from the computer can be added wirelessly through the Sonos Connect. For video services. TBox from Telstra and the Apple TV provide logical choices. If your home cinema system is greater than 10 years old a product like DVDO provides all the HDMI switching and upscaling that is evident on the premium receivers of today.

Albury Wodonga

Excellence in aged care By RUSSELL BENNETT BUPA’S Wodonga development has fast earned a reputation for the quality environment it has created for its elderly and frail residents, earning it a nomination as a finalist in this year’s Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) Victoria’s Awards for Excellence. The UDIA awards will be announced at Crown Palladium in Melbourne on Friday 7 December. Bupa Care Services is one of Australia’s predominate aged care developers and operators. The company has

50 care homes in six states and territories throughout Australia, caring for around 4000 residents. Bupa does not provide independent living or undertake seniors living residential development. Its residents are usually referred by medical advisors. The urban form of the care homes in the Wodonga development is in keeping with the low-rise suburban nature of the location, while sharing the vast open space afforded by the neighbouring church hall. Internal courtyards provide intimate and secure spaces for residents and

their families. Bupa’s primary objective is to provide its residents a home, deliberately avoiding an institutional sense of place. Passive solar design is a key factor of configuring the floor plan on the site to maximise the amount of incoming natural light, while minimising heat loads. The service offering at Bupa Wodonga relates specifically to the care needs of its residents, with high care, low care, extra service care and dementia care. The development also includes companion rooms for those who wish to share. Each care unit has its own dining

and lounge room and more intimate sitting rooms. There are also common facilities for use by all residents and their families. These include a hair salon, spa, massage and movie room which can also be used for church services. Bupa’s aged care home at Wodonga is a leading example of a quality environment specifically designed and built to meet the evolving needs of their residents. Bupa’s Wodonga home is an important social member of its community, not only caring for local frail and elderly residents but also acting as a sig-

nificant employer, with over 100 local jobs created. The company, both locally and globally, is committed to environmental sustainability, with a major push to reduce its carbon footprint by utilising passive solar design - using gas for cooking and for hot water and using movement sensors for lighting in lowuse rooms and recycled stormwater. The headline value of Bupa’s Wodonga care home is the person-centred care that the company believes is of paramount importance. They care for the person as much as their afflictions.

Jetconi’s last blast By GARY HOWE

GRAND old galloper Jetconi will look to carve his name in the record books as he attempts the rare feat of a Wodonga Cup three-peat early next month before heading off to a new career in the show ring. Mansfield trainer Gerald Egan confirmed to NewsWeekly that Jetconi, considered somewhat of a family pet, would retire from racing after this campaign. His main mission on the way out will be a third straight Wodonga Cup on Sunday 2 December. In a nice twist, the veteran galloper is likely to be ridden by upand-coming rider Jye McNeill, who looks set to follow the path to turf stardom of other Egan stable apprentices Luke Nolen and Nick Hall. Egan said the Wodonga Cup was a non-claiming race, which meant McNeill would not be able to take advantage of his two-kilogram claim as an apprentice, but that he might land the ride anyway, given his hot form of late. In the past fortnight, McNeill has ridden trebles at Tatura and Berrigan and winners as far afield as Echuca, Benalla and Cranbourne. Egan said he had the potential to live up to his former apprentices Nolan and Hall if he continued to do the right things. “He’s nice and light and has good hands and balance,” the trainer said. By contrast, Jetconi has little to prove. The eight-year-old Bianconi gelding has faced the starter 54 times for nine wins, 12 seconds and

Mansfield trainer Gerald Egan.

Jason Benbow takes Jetconi to the line to win his second Wodonga cup last year. three thirds for $235,937 in prizemoney. He finished at the back of the field in a Cranbourne night meeting last Friday at his second run this campaign and may have another run at Wangaratta on 19 November to prime him for the cup. “He’s obviously a bit older now, but seems to be going all right at the moment,” Egan said. “We’ve set him for the cup and he’ll either go straight in or have another run at Wangaratta.” Egan bought his mother, Fearless Finesse, in foal to Jetconi in a New Zealand sale. She was the last of the Noble Bijou line and has been

a good producer for the stable. “This one (Jetconi) has been the best of them, but we’re about to break his little sister in, so hopefully the line goes on,” Egan said. Jetconi’s nine career wins have come on eight tracks, with his only double coming at Wodonga on Cup Day. The trainer says he is suited by the tight Wodonga circuit, which is similar to his home track at Mansfield. Egan has won a few nice races over the years and is also famous for performing the famous downhill ride as a stunt double for Tom Burlinson in the iconic Australian movie The Man From Snowy River.

“I’ve had a bit of luck along the way,” as he modestly put it. He says it’s a thrill to win any race, let alone a third straight cup, and particularly so with a horse like Jetconi, which he says is treated like a family pet at home. Particularly given it could be his racing swansong. A good looker with a nice temperament, Jetconi is destined for a career in the show ring. “He’ll be pretty popular,” the trainer said. “I’ve always got someone asking what he’s doing after he finishes racing.” But he has a job to finish first.

FANTASTIC... Mark Cooper is more than happy with his prized Quintrex boat.

Wish for the fish By KRYSTEN MANUEL

FESTIVALS, shows, live music and sport. The Albury Wodonga region has something for everyone every weekend. With so many options, we sometimes overlook things that others travel far and wide for like our beautiful Lake Hume and it’s fantastic fishing. “It’s such an under-utilised resource,” local fisherman Mark Cooper said. “I travel all over Australia and right on our doorstep is world-class fishing. “I plead locally for people to use the facility.” Mark has every reason to praise Lake Hume with his recent success at the Lake Hume Classic. “We fish all the time,” he

said. “We went all the way up the coast specifically to fish, and with very little success. We came home and were really keen to go fishing, so we went in the Lake Hume Classic.’ “We fished from sun up to sun down all day Saturday and Sunday, got about 20 good size fish in the boat and came away with a prize like this,” he said, gesturing towards his new Quntrex 390 Explorer. “It’s fantastic!” The recent results from the tournament are a testament to the quality of fish that thrive in Lake Hume. Some 404 keen fishermen and women entered, 670 fish were measured and 56 yellowbelly were caught. The biggest eating fish

caught was a 62cm yellow belly in the senior category. “The weather was perfect, perfect for every kind of angler,” Mr Cooper said. “There were trout rising in the morning and beer was cold. “You go out on the boat and you can fish in 50m of water, so you can down rig, and you can fish in 20m of water under existing structures. “You can shore fish, there’s rivers coming in, streams coming in, there wouldn’t be any type of fisherman who would be disappointed. “I’ve got a real addiction for the local area.” Whether you’re a seasoned local fisherman or a novice, our local waters are teeming with fish and calling you.

TRUE to form, Albury Wodonga Triathlon Club (AWTC) triathletes excelled in race one of the Triathlon Victoria State Series. With two gold medals, three silver medals and nine top 10 finishes, the campaign of the junior border triathletes has begun. “The junior squad professionalism shown by all triathletes during the two days in Melbourne gives me confidence in their great future ahead in the sport of triathlon,” AWTC coach Fabrizio Andreoni said. 16 Albury Wodonga junior triathletes travelled to Melbourne last weekend to contest race one of the Triathlon Victoria State Series - a 500m swim, 16km ride and 5km run. The junior elite female race was won by 15 year old AWTC athlete Kirsty Deacon, while in the junior elite male event, 17-year-old AWTC athlete Caleb Noble came second. “For Kirsty, it was her debut in the junior elite category,” Mr Andreoni said. “I believe that the relaxed atmosphere that all the junior squad has created around Kirsty has contributed a lot to her outstanding performance. “It has been a long time since an AWTC member was able to win a state race in the Junior Elite category. “In the company of Caleb Noble, AWTC now has two outstanding athletes that can compete in the national series at high level.” Kirsty, with the overall fastest female run time on the day, also gained second place in the overall female category, just 21 seconds behind senior elite Wendy McAlpine. Although the AWTC is a small local club, the club has a great history of success in the junior category at state and national level. “To all of you, keep perusing your dream of searching for the best of you in the sport of triathlon,” Mr Andreoni said. “The training program was probably hard and demanding at some stage but your perseverance and belief in it has rewarded you with an outstanding result.” The next event for the junior squad will be the race two of the Victoria State Series in Brighton, 2 December and in Queensland, 15 December for the first of the National Triathlon Series.

Race day pits man against machine By TREVOR JACKSON EVERYONE wants to be at the pointy end of the starting grid, but it’s more than just driver and car that makes for success. The pit crews are often overlooked, only seen fleetingly during a race, but it’s what they do in the background that makes or breaks a team. Chief mechanic for Brad Jones Racing, Dan Vickers, this week provided an insight into the workings of a V8 team. He said Winton, BJR’s “home” track, is a little easier for the team. The trucks leave the Albury workshop at 6.30am Thursday, with a crew following around 8am. The day is spent setting up the pit, practising stops, and concludes around 6.30pm. The transport drivers soon forgo the comfort of their cabs to become tyre technicians, checking pressures and wear, mounting tyres to rims and keeping a record of it all. And come race day, the action begins in earnest. “Qualifying is 20 minutes and it’s hectic, non-stop,” Vickers said. “Everybody’s trying to help, you’re listening to the radio, getting messages from the engineers, team managers and race control.” But Vickers said once the race starts, things begin settle down. He said it gives the crew time to eat, drink and relax a bit - until something goes wrong. During a race only eight members of the team can form the pit crew, and it’s in this situation they really earn their keep. While you may only see them for around 30 seconds or so during a pit stop, regular practice before an event ensures a seamless transition for car and driver. “Regardless of what happens with the car, if it’s involved in an accident and gets back to pit lane, it will stop in the box, we’ll put it in the air and put fuel in it,” Vickers explained.

WNBL stars on the swish list THE WNBL returns to the Border this weekend when the Canberra Capitals face off with Bendigo Spirit at the Lauren Jackson Sports Centre. After taking a tough 59-54 road win against the Spirit last weekend, ending Bendigo’s unbeaten start to the season, Canberra will be hoping for more of the same when they take the floor in Albury. The Spirit currently sits atop the ladder with six wins and a solitary loss, while the Capitals hold down fourth spot with a five and three record. Stadium manager Michael Stanton says ticket pre-sales have topped the last two years and he’s expecting around 1000 fans on the day. “The way the two teams are playing, it’s looking like we have a top of the table clash, which is great,” he said. Mr Stanton is urging fans to ensure they’re at the stadium early to get a good seat ready for the 2pm tip-off. The Captials will also be making an appearance at the stadium Friday night to mingle with fans and those involved in the Midnight Basketball program. Saturday will present another opportunity to grab autographs and say hi to the players from 11.30am with training from 12.30pm. All are welcome to come along.

THE Winton round of the V8 Supercars is upon us and teams are feverishly preparing for race day. “While that’s happening the other guys look around and see what’s wrong. We’ll put it in the garage and by then somebody has made an assessment. “Somebody has gone to the truck to grab the upright, or the suspension component, or the bolts we need to replace, and nine times out of 10, we’ll do whatever we can to

get the car back in the race.” Vickers said there’s a strong sense of pride amongst the pit crew in ensuring a car finishes a race, regardless of position. “To me there’s no more pride than the car coming in all crumpled and steaming, then going back out looking like it should,” he said. And winning - he said that’s just

as special for the pit crew as it is for the driver. “No matter what anybody said, there’s nothing like winning a race it’s just one of those things,” he said. “The high of winning a race always balances out the lows you have through the rest of the year. “And at the end of the day, it’s a team, and we’re all part of it.”
