IF YOU'RE wondering what all the hype is about in Lavington, maybe it's time you headed down to Shepparton Cannery XS to nd out. And now is the perfect time, with a big once-a-year clearance sale on until next week. The locally-owned business has grown from strength to strength, recently expanding to a new location, just a few doors down from the old shop in Urana Road, and is the biggest store of it's type between the Border and Shepparton. They now offer a wider range of their usual grocery items, plenty of fresh meat, fresh fruit and vegetables and frozen food with prices often 10-60 per cent less than the major supermarket chains – and that's all on quality brand-name products such as SPC, Ardmona, Golden Circle, Sara Lee and many more. But it's not all about saving the customer money. Owners Tracey Spencer and Craig English are also passionate about supporting local suppliers, stocking brand names such as Kiewa Milk, Yackandandah Jam, Murray Breweries cordials, Beechworth Apple Juice and more. And because the business is independently owned and operated all the prots stay here on the Border. Mr English said the new premises had been well received by regular customers and he's challenging those who haven't considered shopping there to head down and have a look. “The move has been huge – the customers love it,” he said. “It's easier parking, easier shopping and there's more stock available. People can come here and do about 70 per cent of their shopping. “People are also welcome to bring in last week's shopping docket and compare our prices.” With new products sourced regularly and plenty of stock on hand it's well worth popping in to Shepparton Cannery XS and start saving on your weekly grocery bill.

SES ready for floods
A ALBURY SES is excited about their newest acquisition, a flood rescue boat that is set to change the capabilities of the service. And the public are invited to check it out on Saturday at QEII Square. TURN TO PAGE 4 FOR THE FULL STORY Phil Murphy says he protests in a non-confrontational way.
Protesters out By TREVOR JACKSON
WHILE anti-abortion protesters continue their vigil outside the Englehardt Street fertility clinic in Albury, Doctor Kathy Lewis is calling for their removal from the area. “I think they have absolutely no purpose here, except to upset people,” Dr Lewis told NewsWeekly. “I really think there is no place, in this day and age, for a minority to impose their views on the rest of society. If they want to preach about it, they can preach about it in their own space, but to occupy a space that is not related to them and impose their ideas on people is totally inappropriate.” While the protesters consider they offer advice in a non-obstructive manner, Dr Lewis doesn’t see it that way. NewsWeekly spoke to Dr Lewis about 11am last Thursday at the clinic, at which time she said she had already
spoken to three separate women who were upset by the protesters’ antics. “Two of the women have been extremely upset by the protesters,” she said. “They are distressed enough about having to make this decision without having to run the gauntlet of somebody who has no idea of their medical history, their emotional history, their situation, trying to tell them what to do with their lives. I think it is totally unacceptable.” One of the protesters, Phil Murphy, spoke to NewsWeekly and claimed the protest was “unobtrusive”. “We don’t try to take away anyone’s rights,” he said. “We don’t stop them - I stand here and I don’t block the footpath. We offer a brochure with information. We just stand and watch. We haven’t stopped anyone. We never have. We’re here about respecting people’s rights,
absolutely.” But Dr Lewis claimed some of the protesters were “very obtrusive”. “They go to people’s car windows and they do obstruct people,” she said. “They chase people across the street - someone is going to be run over. They block people walking along the street - their partners or people who are with them become quite irate. It is just totally unacceptable.” The brochures handed out by the protesters contain graphic images which people could find disturbing, but Mr Murphy says what is disturbing is what is happening at the clinic. “I believe unborn children are human beings and I don’t believe it’s right to kill a human being,” he said. “I find, in my experience, there is always a better way.” Dr Lewis, who studied clinical psychology prior to medicine, said she of-
fered counselling and advice prior to any procedure taking place. “I can help them clarify their decision, I can go through their reasons, which I always do,” she said. “If somebody is having difficulty with the decision, if they’re not at a point where they’ve made a clear decision, I’ll send them home to think about it, to contact some other counsellors.” Dr Lewis said the protesters don’t take into account any other issues relating to the situation before they approached someone on the street. “I have had a woman come in with a life-threatening medical condition who has two young children,” Dr Lewis said. “She faces a life-threatening situation if she carries another pregnancy. She has made a totally reasonable decision to not continue the pregnancy.”

Dr Lewis said she had tried to resolve the issue but with little success. “They say they are here to help the unborn babies but there is no rationalising with them or discussing other options,” she said. “We have had meetings with the police, we have tried to do mediation, we have tried to have them moved across the street. We have tried to put in some boundaries in terms of them approaching people. “I don’t think anybody, including me, has the right to dictate to somebody what they should do.” Mr Murphy said the “informal group” would continue their protest, regardless of whether it upset anyone or not. “I would say I’m very sorry they feel that way, but we’re very careful that we try not to intimidate them, for the sake of the ones who do respond,” he said.

By TREVOR JACKSON WOODNGA council is already facing opposition over its latest draft plan, a re-development of the Felltimber precinct on the corner of Felltimber Creek Road and Melrose Drive. The proposed changes include a boardwalk, fishing platform, dog park, pizza oven and various other improvements plus a housing development adjacent to the lake. Wodonga resident Rod Jones said the proposed development was “outrageous. He said the site was a haven for wildlife, a designated reserve and should be retained as such. “I can’t believe council would even consider putting housing there, Mr Jones said. “It’s open space and should be retained for the future of Wodonga. The area is used a lot by peo-

ABORTION is a hot topic in many parts of the world. There are pro-life groups, pro-choice groups and those who have no view on the subject, unless they are touched by it personally. The procedure is legal in Australia and those seeking to terminate their pregnancy have the right to do so in a safe, controlled environment, whether for personal or medical reasons. But here on the Border people have faced stiff opposition to abortion for many years, with a group of protesters continuing its vigil on the street in front of the fertility clinic in Englehardt Street. Whether you agree with abortion or not, the fact remains, it is a choice some people feel the need to make, and are allowed to make legally. Those opposing feel it’s their legal right to protest on the street and present disturbing imagery to women as they approach the clinic, and of course those attending the clinic feel it’s their legal right to do so in peace and relative privacy. In Australia we have freedom of speech and freedom of choice, but the two seem to be crossing paths here in Albury, with no apparent end in sight.

ple for picnics, kids go fishing there, it has been used for recreation for a long time. Wodonga councillor John Watson said when the lake was originally proposed the public was concerned about safety, but once completed they wanted it to be larger. He said the public would have the ultimate say in what happened at the site. “Developments came here with our community and childcare centres and now we’re up to another stage with developing the site, Cr Watson said. “We’ve come up with this master-plan to finish the site off and we’re asking for community feedback so we can make a final decision. There may be things not liked by the community, or they may think it’s fantastic and want to add more to it. Depending on the feedback, Cr Watson said it was still possible to increase the size of the lake and leave the grounds as open community space. “That might be one of the things the committee comes back and says, he said. “We might widen it by a few metres, but definitely putting a boardwalk or a cycle track around it so our younger members can learn to cycle there - very similar to Belvoir Park and Sumsion Gardens, and that is surrounded by houses as well. “It’s really bringing our community housing into our parklands and using it. But Mr Jones said council should leave the open spaces in the city alone. “Wodonga is eventually going to double in population, he said. “This area should be retained for the future amenities of the city. Visit makewodongayours.com.au/felltimber for further information.

An Anzac journey By KRYSTEN MANUEL ALBURY High School student, James Mitchell, has been selected for a prestigious Premier’s Anzac Memorial Scholarship, which entails a trip through South East Asia. James is one of 16 scholars announced by Minister for Citizenship and Communities Victor Dominello. “I was really surprised when I got it because a girl from Albury High won it last year, Blythe Vogel, James said. “And I’d like to say Albury High has been really supportive with it. I’ve had a lot of help from my teachers and from Blythe. “Mrs Watson helped a lot - she went to Gallipoli last year with Blythe. The group of Year 10 and 11 scholarship students will undertake a pilgrimage to sites of military significance in South East Asia, including Singapore, in an effort to learn more about the Anzac legacy. “I had to do three essays to apply, James said. “(One each on) my representation of the school and NSW, my connection to wartime and the Australian Army, and how I would spread this news and promote the scholarship. “I had to look through my family history, and I was lucky enough to have big books of it, so that was good. “My grandfather was in the air force in the Korean War though, so I talked about him and his experiences. “I got a whole lot of information about the Korean War from him, like newspaper articles from the time, which was really great to read, and I read some books as well. Member for Albury, Greg Aplin, has also commended James for his passion and dedication to Australian modern history. “It is wonderful news for James and for the Albury High community that someone from our local region has been selected for such an exceptional oppor-

Second shooting By KRYSTEN MANUEL POLICE are warning people to be careful when in the presence of a firearm, after a man was accidentally shot while fox hunting on a property near Howlong on Saturday night. It was the second such incident in just over a month. Police have been told two men had been shooting foxes on the property and were returning to the homestead at approximately 9.15pm. A 31-year-old man allegedly picked up his rifle from the back seat of his vehicle when it discharged, hitting his friend in the left knee. The 32-year-old man from Thurgoona was taken by ambu-
James Mitchell has won the prestigious honor of the Premier’s ANZAC memorial scholarship. tunity, he said. “To be selected for a scholarship, students had to show commitment to the study of Australian history, and passion for maintaining the Anzac tradition in their communities. “Before and after their trip, the scholars will play a leading role in commemorative activities at schools and memorials, as well as submitting an individual project about their experiences. “I wish James all the very best for the South East Asia trip later this year, Mr Aplin said. Minister for Citizenship and Communities Victor Dominello said the scholars’ trip will include visits to sites of military bases and other significant places where Australian soldiers served their country. “This is a unique opportunity for these NSW students to learn about Australia’s military involvement in the region, not from a text-book but through first-hand experience, he said.
“In remembrance of fallen Anzacs, the scholars will scatter the ashes of commemorative paper stars inscribed with the names of Australian casualties of the war, originally cast in tribute by visitors to the Australian War Memorial. “By seeing the places where Australian servicemen lived and fought, and by forging connections with local communities, this unparalleled real-life learning experience will undoubtedly open their eyes to the realities of war. “The scholars’ connection with the Anzac legacy will continue when they return, as they share their experiences with their schools and local communities back home. “The Anzac spirit is something that binds us all regardless of our age or cultural background. The NSW Government is committed to making Anzac commemorations inclusive of all citizens, whether they were born here or overseas.
lance to Albury Hospital for treatment and is reported to be in a stable condition. Detectives have interviewed the Howlong man and the .204 Ruger rifle has been seized for forensic examination. Albury Police Inspector Matthew Tischler said forensic examination would not be complete for several weeks. “He said that as he removed the rifle from the rear seat it discharged ... but it needs to be forensically examined to see whether it could have accidentally discharged, he said. “The cardinal rule for all firearms matters is always treat every firearm as if it’s loaded. Inquiries are continuing.
Indecent assault By KRYSTEN MANUEL
POLICE are appealing for information after an alleged indecent assault in Albury on Saturday 6 April. At approximately 10.40pm on Saturday 6 April, four women in their early twenties were walking through a laneway that runs between Jones Street, Griffith Street and Kiewa Street in central Albury. After passing the intersection of Griffith Street, two men ran towards the group of women. One man is alleged to have grabbed hold of one of the women and indecently assaulted her. After a brief scuffle, the two men ran towards Jones Street. The first man was described to police as being of Middle Eastern/ Mediterranean appearance, about 25 to 30 years old, with dark, medium coloured skin, 190cm tall and of
solid build. He also has dark eyes, thick eyebrows and no facial hair. He had short black hair which was shorter on the sides than the top. When he was last seen, the man was wearing a maroon T-shirt with white writing on it. The women have only been able to tell police the second man was shorter and skinnier than his companion. Police are warning people to be thoughtful when walking around Albury at night. “At all times, if possible, make sure you have someone with you, Albury Police Inspector Matthew Tischler said. “If at all possible, use public transport - taxi’s or courtesy buses, and try to avoid becoming isolated in places that aren’t well lit.

New boat for SES
Sally Conlon, Ivan Webb, Tim Keown and Stephen Hayes give the new rescue boat a run on Lake Hume.
By TREVOR JACKSON ALBURY SES will be proudly unveiling its latest acquisition to the public this Saturday. And it’s fair to say they’re excited. Local SES controller Penny Murphy said the new flood rescue boat was a great asset for the Albury community. The 5.5 metre mid-steer boat will allow greater flexibility for the local crew. It includes twin 60hp engines, a 120-litre fuel capacity and can carry

1560 kilograms of weight or up to 10 people, making it ideal for flood rescue, fodder relief or food delivery. “The new boat will do around 55-60 kilometres per hour, which is great for fast recovery, Ms Murphy said. “Recreational fishermen on Lake Hume can travel 30-40 minutes up the lake to go fishing. We now have the boat that can actually go out at high speed, pick people up and/or tow a large boat back. “It’s also great power for high
flood situations, so if you have a large flow of water in a river we can actually hold our own. That means if we need to get into a flooded car or home it has the power to get us up to a point then hold ourselves in the water so we can transfer people into the boat. The new boat replaces a 4.7 metre tiller-controlled boat, which was 29 years old. Ms Murphy said she felt the community would appreciate the boat when and if it was needed. “Let’s hope we don’t have to use it in anger, but if we do, we have that resource there, she said. The public can see the new boat this Saturday at QEII Square from 10am to 2pm as part of the Emergency Services Day.
Grants cash flows By KRYSTEN MANUEL
GRANTS amounting to $195,908 for community projects in the Albury electorate have been announced, with Moresby Park Preschool leading the pack with a $68,956 grant to upgrade their wheelchair access. “This important grants program continues to deliver for the Albury electorate, Member for Albury, Greg Aplin said. “Many community and sporting organisations across the electorate have already benefited from this program and it is now pleasing to add another nine to that list. “$195,908 for community projects in our area will make a real difference for the various sports, children’s, youth and other groups receiving funding. “A total of 21 applications were submitted under the Community Building Partnership program seeking a total of over $706,000 for a range of projects from upgrades to power supplies to community facilities to erecting aircraft hangars. “I am pleased to have assisted in securing these grants for new and upgraded facilities in our community but appreciate that some groups will be disappointed they missed out, Mr Aplin said. Moresby Park Preschool director, Ms Katrina Murray, wrote the original application and is surprised and thrilled with the result. “It is a significant amount of money to put in a grant application for, it’s very exciting! she said.
“Our application for this grant was to change our toilet area, locker room and our office space, to include wheelchair access to our building and put in a disabled access toilet. “There’s two stages, so the next stage is to make out outdoor undercover area accessible by wheelchair into our building, so these funds will help us complete the plan. Further changes will include the building of ramps and resurfacing of uneven concrete areas at the entry to the preschool. “We currently have a child attending our preschool that needs wheelchair access, Ms Murray said. “We also have a child who is legally blind. With their increasing independence we need to support them greatly. Moresby Park Preschool hadn’t been altered for 58 years when the first stage of funding came through. Before the initial refurbishments were done, parents had to walk through the toilet area into the locker area to access the building. Funding has also increased the visibility of the children inside and outside. “It’s also widened the groups of children and community members we will be able to have access our services, Ms Murray said. Ms Murray would also like to thanks AlburyCity, who have given a great deal to bettering the preschool by providing more funds and organising plans and workers.
Right: Moresby Park Preschool students and teachers are excited for the new renovations to their school.

Rob and Janina Hiles of Zo`i cafe in Albury are providing a public place for you to support Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea. Kate’s wedding. The girls made wedding frocks out of scrap material and we had a lot of fun.” Ms Borella urges anyone who can to host a morning tea to support the cause, and encourages everyone to have as much fun with it as they can. “The big thing is to invite as many people you can, and if you have some theme it helps to bring people along and make it fun,” she said. In the last 20 years, we have seen breakthrough advancements in treatment, successful screening programs
and major improvements in survival rates for many cancers, but although we have come a long way, there’s still more to do. If you would like to join Ms Borella for a cuppa on 23 May, call 6025 3283. The morning tea will be held at St James Hall, Lavington, 7.30pm. Don’t forget to bring along any special baby items you have and a note as to why they’re important. WHO would have thought the simple ‘cuppa tea’ could raise $110 million for cancer research? Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea (ABMT) is on again and celebrating its 20th birthday on 23 May, and with a hefty collection of hosts around Albury Wodonga, there’s no excuse not to sit down and have a cuppa! ABMT has grown into a massive event, with over a million Australians getting together in living rooms, community centres, schools and workplaces to put the kettle on for a cause each year. One such person is Mary Borella, who has been hosting the tea at her local church for the past six years, and having a lot of fun. “Cancer is an insidious thing,” Ms Borella said. “It affects so many families and so many people and we feel that it’s a need to support because everyone is affected in one way or another, whether it be a mother, father, sister or friends. “We feel that it’s a great way of helping even in just a small way.” Ms Borella’s group is expected to raise close to $1000, having raised an increasing amount of money since she started hosting the event. This year Ms Borella is expecting around 70 people. “This year our theme is a baby shower for Princess Kate,” she said. “Last year we were hoping to have a baby shower, but it didn’t eventuate, as Kate didn’t have a baby. So last year we had a preview to the Olympic Games and the year before that we had Princess

THE Albury Entertainment Centre came alive with the sweet sound of music last Thursday night at the production of The Sound Of Music. The chatter after the production was extremely positive, with crowds raving about Maria (Jennifer Robinson) and her beautiful voice - but it’s safe to say that little Gretl (Ebony Banks) stole the crowd’s hearts with her sweet voice and wonderful acting skills. All demographics were well represented and with only a couple of hilarious hitches, the show went off with a bang!

Providing quality living for retirees.
FRIENDS, lifestyle, community – that’s the theme of the new Wodonga Gardens Retirement Estate. And while the estate may be the new kid on the block here on the Border, it comes with years of experience, developed through the Gannon Lifestyle Group. Wodonga Gardens is the 15th estate Gannons have developed and a major focus for the family business is on community. The estate is set to include everything that has made the previous Gannon estates popular, from a community centre complete with restaurant, bar, gym and library to a community garden and a men’s shed. The Gannon Group has more than 20 years experience in developing retirement estates and have employed Ruth Kernaghan to manage Wodonga Gardens, herself with over 20 years in the industry, much of that with Gannons. Ruth said she was excited the Gannon family were developing in Wodonga and felt it was important for those looking to enter retirement estates to know the developers were there for the right reasons. “Mavis and Tom Gannon originally wanted to retire and thought a retirement village sounded like a good place to start,” Ruth explained. “They looked around and couldn’t find much on offer. There were plenty of gated communities for the wealthy, plenty of smaller dwellings but not a lot in the middle. They returned to Adelaide and ended up with a portfolio of nine estates. “About five years ago they finally retired but their sons felt they did the job of developing retirement estates well, so they entered the family business.” With four estates now up and running – Tamworth, Griffith, Angle Vale and Wodonga – Gannons are again well on the way to providing quality living for retirees. Ruth said one of the main focuses for the busi-
ness was community, and Wodonga Gardens was being developed with that focus in mind, which she said was evident in the Gannon’s approach to developing retirement estates. “The Gannons care about people,” she said. “The way they road-test things is, “is this good enough for our mum?”. The staff care about people. When people move here they find they have their immediate family, they become part of another family here and then become part of the Gannon family.” The estate will eventually include 172 independent-living villas as well as serviced apartments. It is pet-friendly with residents able to bring their current pets and replace them further down the track. The villas range from two to three-bedrooms, with ensuite-style or full bathrooms, ample space to move around and thoughtful fittings such as lower light switches and easy-to-open door handles. Bay windows feature in the master bedrooms and no steps are included, with flat, easy access to shower recesses. The kitchens are stunning with stainless-steel appliances, dishwashers if required and stylish finish on the cupboards. Ruth said another important feature of retirement living was security, but not just in the way of a gated estate. “There is the physical security, coming in behind security gates,” she said. “But it’s also about having a fence around the back yard, coming through your garage into your home, having the emergency call system with staff there to pick it up. “And there is the security that I know what I’m doing, the Gannons know what they’re doing, we’ve done it before – your investment is safe.” For those interested in quality retirement-estate living, Wodonga Gardens is currently offering a $10,000 discount on the stage-one villas and 12 months free maintenance fees.

Pre-pregnancy Information Session Tuesday 28th May 2013, 6-8pm
After the shopping is done, the setting-up can begin. First up, painting the room. Again, providing supervision is key! It’s best if you get your hubby, partner or friends and family to grab a paint brush and chip in as the fumes could be harmful for the mum-to-be. Deciding on a colour could be tricky. Pink or blue seems like the obvious choice - but you don’t have to stick to the norm. Yellows and green are a great choice for either bub. Bright reds and purples are great for girls and browns and rustic colours are great for little boys. To go for a modern-chic look, try pure white. It looks great but may not be the practical choice with an itty-bitty baby who poos and spits up a zillion times a day. Chevron (a wavy triangle pattern) is also very in at the moment and adds a little bit of style to any room. When it comes to dÊcor, a chandelier is a perfect touch to the little princess’s room while aeroplanes or cars work for little boys. If painting a room seems like too big of a task, stick-on wall dÊcor is the best way to add some spark to the nursery. They come in a variety of shapes, colours and themes and can be found in many stores. Once the nursery is done, make sure to grab a seat in that comfy chair, put your feet up and relax for a minute - as those quiet moments could be hard to come by when the baby arrives!

PLANNING the new arrival’s nursery can be a fun and exciting task - but if you get carried away you can spend big bucks on unnecessary dÊcor. So, the best idea before filling your shopping cart with goodies is to plan a budget and stick to it! Before digging deep and splashing the cash, ask family and friends what hand-me-downs they would be happy to sell or give away. Babies grow like beans after they are born, so many parents of little ones have baby seats and bassinets their bubs have out-grown, and are happy to get rid of if they are done having a family, or lend for a few months before they have another child. Next, make two separate lists of what you need, and what you want. Make sure to cross off the necessities first before you get carried away with purchasing stuffed animals, toys and the like. Remember, you may also receive these items as gifts when the baby is born - and if you don’t, you can go shopping again. Make sure you get a cot, change table, and a comfy chair for those late night feeds. If the furniture is heavy or needs to be put together, put your partner to work! It’s not advised pregnant women do any heavy lifting during their pregnancy- but there are no rules about providing excellent supervision! 1070310-JM16-13

Evermore successful By KRYSTEN MANUEL
THE dreamy sounds of Evermore are coming back to Albury with their new album Follow The Sun, part of the biggest Australia wide tour the brothers have done in four years. Those avid watchers of The OC will remember Evermore’s contribution to the hit show with their single It’s Too Late - almost an OC anthem - and it seems the boys have struck the right chord again. HBO Network has selected ‘Follow The Sun’ as the music bed for their 2013 new season TV promo, as have Dreamworks Studio for the trailer of their forthcoming animated feature ‘The Croods.’ Evermore will be heading to the States for shows in July, so don’t miss the Hero tour coming to the Albury SS&A club 26 April - the perfect way to see them live before we potentially lose them to the allure of the Northern Hemisphere! “I guess it’s probably our most optimistic album,” Evermore singer/ songwriter Jon Hume told NewsWeekly. “Each album has had a different vibe to it and with this one, we’ve just realised how music can get you through a difficult time or help you overcome a challenge you’re facing. “Different songs can capture you and take you on a journey, this album has an “up” feeling to it, which is pretty cool.” One of the most talked about songs on Follow The Sun, Hey My Love, has
cleverly captured the attention of fans and professionals in the field alike, featuring a film clip composed of a selection of 5000 pictures. “It’s using Instagram,” Jon said. “It seemed like a perfect song to feature a whole lot of different types of images, so people just hash tagged hey my love on pictures of someone or a moment they love and we use it in the actual film clip. “We’ve had some unusual ones, like a guy lying down with a pet rabbit and I thought ‘that rabbit looks really large and overweight...’ But there’s also some really great photos that have come through that work really well. “You see the the diversity of what people love, it fits the song really well.” Having recently married, it’s no surprise the album has such an “up” feel to it, with experience the major contributor to Evermore’s music. “I got married about a year ago - I met the girl of my dreams, so that’s the sort of stuff that came through in my music,” he said. “I think everything you go through comes out when you’re writing songs. Definitely the song Hey My Love captures that.” With more success on the horizon, one would think Jon would have enough on his plate, but no. Having recently acquired a small country property, Jon is trying his hand at song-writing and production for other musicians. “I’ve been producing his album for Adam Martin, who was a finalist on
Pete and Jon Hume are coming to Albury with their new Hero tour. The Voice last year, and his first single comes out soon,” he said. “I have a recording studio that we built out in the country near Melbourne on 10 acres... so it’s a lot of mowing to do. “My wife actually does all the
mowing, you just can’t get her off it! And I wouldn’t want to take that away from her ...” And the biggest question - what does the future hold? “Who knows what the future holds,” Jon said.
“I definitely like producing but there’s something great about songwriting and singing as well.” Evermore is performing at the Albury SS&A Club on Friday 26 April at 9pm. Tickets are free. For more information, call 6041 2222. 1070295-JL16-13

Little Me’s big birthday By TREVOR JACKSON LITTLE Me Market is turning one, and they’re celebrating in style with a big day planned at The Cube, Wodonga. “There will be a lot of interactive things happening,” market founder Jade Tauber said. “We’ll have a jumping castle, kids craft sessions, some beading workshops, there will be a balloon stall and we also have a DJ coming to entertain everyone. “The DMB dance centre will doing doing performances and entertaining the kids and the Wodonga Calisthenic group will be running a fund-raising barbecue and performances throughout the day.” The boutique market has proven quite popular since its inception, catering for baby and children’s items right up to adults. Ms Tauber said she had always hoped the market would be a success, and with 50 stalls booked for Sunday there is certainly no shortage of businesses wanting to take advantage. And it’s not just local businesses. “We have a lot of jewellery, fresh flowers, food, make-up and even beauticians,” she said. “It’s a boutique market and an outlet for so many small businesses to come and sell their products. “We’re getting stalls from Wangaratta, Euroa, Shepparton right up to Wagga and Narrandera. “We actually have regular stall holders who come from those places now, so word is getting out.”
See a photo you like?
Originally starting out in Sumsion Gardens, the market soon utilised Wodonga Sports and Leisure Centre during the winter months and has this year moved to The Cube. Ms Tauber said it was a great location, regardless of what the weather decided to do. “This will be our fourth market at The Cube and it’s been fantastic,” she said. “Sumsion Gardens was beautiful but it was weather-pending. The work they’ve done with The Cube is wonderful - the setting is just amazing. “We set up in the courtyard and inside all the chairs retract so the market stalls can set up in there. “We work in with Rubix Cafe as well so we have takeaway meals, egg and bacon rolls for breakfast, and of course the coffee.” Ms Tauber said there was a real community feel to the market and those attending could be assured it was all for a good cause. “What we do is ask for a gold coin donation upon entry and each month we host a different local charity,” she said. “We have hosted the local group for the Makea-Wish Foundation and last market was for a Wagga group called the Angels of the Forgotten. They raise money and awareness for kids in foster care and kids who have been forgotten. We donate the gold coins to each particular charity each month.” The Little Me Markets will run from 10am to 2pm at The Cube Wodonga this Sunday.

Crowds from near and far will join in Mt Beauty Festivities this weekend.
What a Beauty! By KRYSTEN MANUEL
IN ITS 14th year, the Mount Beauty Music Festival is on again this weekend, promising a weekend that’s positively bursting at the seams with live music, food stalls and a range of activities. Mt Beauty’s modest population of 2,300 swells to 3,500 over the weekend, a massive economic boost for the community, but also providing an exciting atmosphere. “It’s just the whole atmosphere of the festival - it brings a completely different perspective to Mt Beauty during that weekend,” festival president, Margaret Brereton said. Ms Brereton has been involved with the festival since the very beginning
Seniors Centre and Cranky Charlie’s, the festival is spread out, making for a 360-degree view of the picturesque town and landscape. Artists such as Haywood Williams and The Yearlings, Benny Walker Band, Allnitelongers, Troy Barrett and Picton Strings will feature across the weekend, as well as poets and smaller acts. “We have everything from folk through to classical through to rock and everything in between,” Margaret said. “It’s an eclectic mix of artists, including poets, children’s activities, workshops, a fringe festival, markets, and a food court.” For tickets and more information, visit http://www.musicmuster.org.au.
when an interest group got together, presented the idea and rallied the community around them. “Myself and a number of other people attended that first public meeting,” she said. “We undertook a feasibility study at that time and took it back to the community meetings. “It certainly has grown and it’s become an annual event the community really looks forward to.” This year, the event will play host to 280 artists from all corners of the globe, as well as local musicians. Broadway’s play for the ages THE Vagina Monologues is returning to the Jazz Basement by popular demand after its successful debut season last year. Livid Productions are again proud to bring the show to the Border and will this year be taking it further afield. “It was such a good fund-raiser last time for Betty’s Place and the Albury Wodonga Women’s Centre for Health and Well-being that we thought we’d bring it back for another two nights,” codirector Liz Kolisnyk said. “We decided to do it for two nights here and then take it to Wangaratta for two nights. That way we can include the Centre Against Violence in Wangaratta as well, so this time there will be three organisations that support women in
crisis that will receive help with profits from the show.” Mrs Kolisnyk said those attending could expect an even better performance than last year. “It’s a great show and the talent we have here is amazing,” she said. “We have some incredibly talented ladies delivering these monologues and they’re all happy and proud to be working for this one cause to raise this money.” The original Vagina Monologues play was written by Eve Ensler and has been performed at such iconic theatres as the Off Broadway Westside Theatre with a television version later produced. The Vagina Monologues became the cornerstone of the V-Day movement, a global movement aiming to highlight violence against women.

The show is sometimes confrontational, sometimes moving, but Mrs Kolilsnyk says it’s always entertaining and aimed at both men and women. “It’s an understanding of what some of these women go through,” she said. “There are many things that come under the arm of violence but these monologues are portrayed in such a beautiful and moving way, you will laugh, cry and be moved all in the one night.” The shows run this Friday and Saturday night from 8pm at the Jazz Basement. . Limited seats are available at the door and bookings can be made at the Albury Entertainment Centre in Swift Street, online at www.alburycity.nsw.gov.au/ entertainment or by phone on 02 6043 5610.

Bring out your brains By KRYSTEN MANUEL MOVIE: Warm Bodies DURATION: 98 minutes A TRULY challenging and interesting concept, Warm Bodies tells the story of a young man, R (Nicholas Hoult), who is part of a zombie apocalypse that has almost engulfed the living world. When R gets hungry, a group heads out to find food, hunting down a small group of humans in search of medicine. In a flash of splattering blood, bone
crunching and brain munching, R sees Julie across the room, blasting zombie heads, and instantly falls in love. As R’s body gets ‘warmer’ thanks to his growing relationship with Julie (which is in turn partly thanks to eating her ex-boyfriend’s brain and gaining his memories), R’s ‘friends’ also begin to liven up. They begin to sleep, dream, talk and even look different. But trying to convince Julie’s father, General Grigio, is another story. In a battle that will one day win a

war, Julie, R and the other zombies manage to show that you’re only lost if you give up. In between the many Romeo and Juliet references is some hearty humour and touching moments, but I have to wonder whether the humour could have been a little more subtle in places. With a little more gore and a more consistent calibre of humour, this film had the potential to be a five star rating.

SILENT films have made a big comeback in recent years, thanks to modern technology and digital remastering. Festivals have taken place all over the world, including many places in Australia - and now it’s Tumut’s turn! On Friday, 26 April, the Montreal Theatre will showcase a collection of films, beginning with The Clinging Vine (1926.) Cecil B De Mille’s 1926 production of The Clinging Vine is, perhaps, the ultimate ’20s gender-bender. Leatrice Joy plays the president’s assistant, known as A.B., who hired, fired and wired men - but had never kissed one. Charmingly, the movie questions whether female professionalism is detrimental to femininity, romantic love, and by implication, the perpetuation of the human race. The eventual narrative solution is for A.B. to undergo an amazing but comedic transformation into a coy, clinging vine draped in flowing dresses. She wins the heart of Jimmie Bancroft, her employer’s grandson - an impractical dreamer who has invented a giant eggbeater. An interval with delicious home-baked goodies will also be provided, followed by a Charlie Chaplin segment. Kid Auto Races at Venice, Cal.(1914) features the first appearance of Chaplin’s famous on-screen persona, “The Little Tramp”. With ill-fitting clothes, clown shoes and a penguin walk, Chaplin hit the jackpot, and within a few short years he was already the most famous and successful comedian in the world. More laughs follow in Caught in the Rain (1914), and fellow-comedian Roscoe “Fatty”Arbuckle joins Charlie in all the mayhem in The Rounders (1914.) The Stan Laurel and Babe Hardy segment is to follow, with The Lot of Fun. Three short film clips promise to have you in stitches after the ‘custard pie’ episode, so sit back and enjoy. Tickets are $10 each and available for purchase on the night at the Montreal Theatre or at Sounds of the Mountains. Phone: 6947 9100.

Shop’s new life
By TREVOR JACKSON THERE was a day when the family takeaway consisted of fish and chips from the local corner store. This week’s featured property used to provide just that service. Before renovations the old Gralen Street fish and chip shop serviced the Wodonga region and now sits perfectly as part of this spacious old-style family home. Outside the home fronts the footpath with large windows and a rendered finish. A wide patternedconcrete drive, tiled steps and a timber framed glass door all add to the quaint appeal. Inside the classic style becomes more apparent, with wide hallways and high ceilings setting the scene. The old ‘shop’ section of the home is now an expansive sunken lounge room, but could easily be uti-

lised for other purposes. The room is warmed by a wood heater with ducted cooling to keep things comfortable in the hotter months, while a skylight provides extra natural light. A built-in bar complete with sink would lend itself to the perfect male retreat, maybe with the addition of a pool table. Alternatively a children’s rumpus room would be a suitable use or just a spacious family entertainment centre, with a large screen TV and comfortable furniture. But maybe the new owner might be looking for that extra space to run a family business and still enable a touch of separation from the rest of the home, which would make this property the ideal choice. The possibilities abound, only restrained by your own needs or desires. But in essence, this is a large family home. Four spacious bed-
rooms, one with built-in robes, ensure there’s ample room for everyone. Built-ins could comfortably be added and free-standing robes would certainly not look out of place given the circa and style of the home. The spacious theme continues into the kitchen/dining area. There’s storage space in abundance, electric cooking and enough room for an expansive dining table, with a gas wall furnace to keep things cosy. Outside family living takes another turn, with room for the parents and the children to play in their own space. A large timber playground features in the back corner of the large yard, including a large cubbyhouse, to keep the youngsters amused while mum and dad relax under cover. Again the possibilities here are

endless, allowing the new owners to create their own idyllic alfresco area with shade and privacy. Patterned concrete is again featured with a pitched roof to create the basis for a relaxed and stylish outdoor living experience. The gardens are established and with a little TLC would come up a treat, and there’s certainly more than enough space for the green-thumb to explore. An original garage remains in place with extra storage for the gardening tools. The home was re-painted outside last year with a new evaporative cooler fitted at the same time. This property offers good value in a convenient location, with easy access to the CBD or to the Hume Freeway via the Bandiana Link.

Fibre plan OK By TREVOR JACKSON
THE Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) NSW has welcomed the Coalition’s announcement that people in new estates will continue to get fibre optic cabling to their homes. UDIA NSW Chief Executive, Stephen Albin, said UDIA had been at the forefront of discussions with the Government and NBN Co regarding the provision of fibre to Greenfields and new housing estates, and the Coalition’s announcement continued to address the concerns of new home buyers. “There has to be equitable treatment for new and existing home owners in relation to the funding of the NBN deployment and quality of service, he said. “Housing affordability is a critical issue in NSW - whichever party that’s in after September must ensure that new house prices are not negatively impacted by the rollout of the NBN. But Alatalo Bros manager Tony Moyle said the NBN service shouldn’t add much to the price of a new home. He said the various taxes currently charged at different levels of government were more concerning. “The National Broadband Network will certainly add something to the overall cost, but I believe it will be minor in the scheme of things when you start talking af-
Rents up slightly THE number of vacant rental homes in Victoria reduced over the March quarter, leading to a small rise in median asking rents. In Melbourne the vacancy rate was 3.6 percent in January and by March it had reduced to 2.8 percent, translating to an increase in asking rents of 3.7 percent from $381 per week to $395 for a house. The greatest tightening was recorded in the inner city, where the vacancy rate dropped from 3.8 to 2.9 per cent, the median house rent consequently rose by 1.5 per cent to $530 per week. In the middle suburbs there was a drop from 3.9 to 3.1
per cent and a 3.7 per cent rise in median house rents. The outer suburbs were more stable with a smaller change in the vacancy rate from 2.6 to 2.3 per cent. Median rents were essentially stable around $340 per week. The only area where the vacancy rate rose was along the Mornington Peninsula, where it increased from 2.9 to 3.6 percent. In regional Victoria the vacancy rate fell from 3.6 to 3.3 per cent and median house rents stayed stable at $300 per week. Of the three main regional centres
fordability with housing, he said. “There are more issues with government stamp duties, taxes, GST - all these other taxes that come into it add up to around 30 percent of the cost of a home and that’s a large chunk of your mortgage. Mr Moyle said the extra charges for the NBN would be the cost for a pit and pipe set-up that was installed during the construction process to allow the cabling to be installed. “The rest of the infrastructure is supplied by the National Broadband Network, he said. “It will allow all the devices that go into the home to hook up to the broadband network. People will be able to take full advantage of the network if they choose. “They’ll be able to live stream video straight from the net so they can have data cabling fitted to the rooms where they want to do that. We can put all the data points in each room if they choose. Mr Moyle said while the service might add a small amount to the overall cost, until the service was up and running properly in the area and service providers began offering competitive deals it was still uncertain what the overall cost would be.
the highest vacancy rate was recorded in Geelong, where it rose from 2.9 percent in January to 4 per cent in March. In Bendigo there was a drop from 3.6 to 2.8 per cent which is similar to the change in Ballarat from 3.6 to 2.4 per cent. In the Albury-Wodonga region the vacancy rate increased slightly from 1.5 to 1.9 per cent - this result does suggest that the overall rental market in the border region remains tight. This is very similar to the 2 per cent recorded in Mildura. While the level of vacant properties has increased, the overall vacancy rate indicates a reasonably balanced market.

Looking for a new family pet or best friend to love? Albury Wodonga Animal Rescue is here to help, with a variety of puppies and dogs waiting to be re-homed with a loving new owner. Most dogs are unclaimed from the Albury Pound or are surrendered by members of the public. Each dog has passed a temperament test before being placed into foster care. The adoption fee for dogs and puppies is $340 plus $40 for council registration if adopted in NSW. The fee includes a veterinary health check, microchipping, desexing, C5 vaccination, flea treatment and intestinal worming. For cats and kittens the fee is $200 which includes veterinary health check, microchipping, desexing, F4 vaccination, flea treatment and intestinal worming. Albury Wodonga Animal Rescue endeavours to carefully match dogs with their new owners to ensure dogs are placed in the best environment for their future wellbeing.

THREE weeks in and two rounds complete we are already starting to learn a few things about this year’s Ovens and Murray season. It’s clear the reigning premiers in Yarrawonga will be one of the teams to beat, and that to many that is no surprise. The Lavingtons, Wang Rovers and Nth Alburys of the world are also going to make their presence felt, but it appears, perhaps despite the experts’ opinions, the Wodonga Raiders are not going to be the easy beats of the competition. With massive departures in the offseason the Raiders will rely heavily on the development of their young kids, something that will no doubt put them in good stead in the future. However they do have plenty of aces in their hand including highly decorated club legend Mark Doolan and the current leading goalkicker in the competition Dean Limbach. With just two games under his belt Limbach has already amassed 11 goals against two of the better defenders in the league - Tyson Hartwig and Luke Chapman, and looks to be a real X-factor down at Birallee. The biggest story for mine so far is that the Albury Tigers are far from coming back to the pack and possibly a better side than ever before. Sounds hard to believe when you consider they have lost the services of Morris Medalist Shaun Daly, plus O&M defenders Koehler and Bush, but they are seriously good. New additions in Dean Polo and ruckman Luke Wells have further

in the Tigers’ tale strengthened a powerful midfield that is currently minus Joel Mackie. Livewire Lonnie Hampton looks to have taken his game to a new level with his blistering pace and deadly defensive pressure and co-coach Daniel Maher is relishing a return to football from a long-term injury with his pinpoint disposal and line breaking run and carry. The Tigers have also found a real spread of goalkickers to support club legend Matt Fowler who incidentally brought up his 800th career goal in the Ovens and Murray - a feat only previously achieved by two others. It appears the hunger is still there at Tigerland and beware the opponent who
of the round meeting this week with Nth Albury. The Hoppers were impressive for three quarters against the Pigeons last match and with Gram, Ackermanis, Leslie and Prior they will be more than a hand full for the Pies. The Wodonga Raiders will have grown in confidence after their first win for the season but will have a real task trying to dampen Yarrawonga’s premiership celebrations as they unfurl last years Premiership flag. Albury should continue their strong form against a young winless Wodonga, and Lavington will keep in touch with the top end of the table when they travel into the Ovens Valley to meet the Saints.
thinks otherwise. This week we are back to a full round of footy and no doubt we will continue to learn much about the competing teams. Corowa face another difficult opponent in Wang Rovers and coach Adrian Pavese will be pleading with his group for a more competitive start than the goal-less first term of last week. The Rovers are enjoying a relatively soft draw early on and will want to hone the skills in for a big month ahead. Ironically the other Wangaratta team have had a horrific draw so far with opening games against Yararwonga and Lavington. The bad news for the Magpies is there is no respite with a match

Full throttle emotion By TREVOR JACKSON
EMOTION poured out as Brad Jones Racing’s Jason Bright crossed the line to claim the Jason Richards Trophy in the weekend’s round of the V8 Supercars in New Zealand. Richards was an integral part of the BJR team before he succumbed to cancer. BJR team boss Brad Jones said last week he was trying to keep a check on emotions leading up to the event but had hoped to bring the trophy back home to Albury. And Bright didn’t disappoint, leading the weekend’s point score up to the final race on Sunday before taking the memorable victory and being presented the trophy by Richard’s wife Charlotte and daughter Sienna. Bright said while he could have won the trophy without winning the final race, he was determined to take a victory for the weekend to do his mate proud. But the pressure was mounting before the weekend even began, with “JR’s” daughter Sienna contacting Bright the week before. “Sienna had sent me a message on the Sunday night when I was coming home from Tassie saying she wanted to present me the trophy,” Bright explained. “To see that actually happen was extremely satisfying. It was a pretty special day for BJR. JR was a big part of the team when I got here. Finishing up in his car when he got sick, car 8 - I feel like I’m keeping his seat warm in a way. It was an honour to win the trophy that carries his name in the car he should have been driving.” Bright said he had the car pace all weekend to win the trophy but poor qualifying almost destroyed his plans. “The car had the speed so it was for me to lose,” Bright said. “I felt pretty obliged to make it happen when the car had so much speed. I was gutted when I qualified 12th Sunday morning for the first race and Davidson went on to win it. That made it even harder and put a lot of pressure on for that last race.”

And if that wasn’t tough enough, the final race added a touch more emotion than even Bright could have imagined. “Before the race Charlotte and JR’s girls were having photos in front of the car on the grid,” Bright said. “There was an unbelievable amount of emotion flowing at that point. It was definitely one of the toughest race weekends of my career. I’m just glad I came out on top.” Bright said he was honoured to bring the inaugural Jason Richards Trophy back to what he considered its “rightful home”. “I think everybody knew and felt that at the start of the weekend, but it’s another thing making it happen,” he said. “Hats off to the team. We had an awesome car. We worked extremely hard to make sure we had everything right for New Zealand. The mechanics did a great job on the car over the weekend and it was just up to me to finish it off on track. “I’m just so relieved we were able to bring it back to Albury and have our name on that trophy for the inaugural time.”

HOCKEY Albury Wodonga’s 2013 State League campaign is off to a flying start, with the Spitfires taking it home against La Trobe University 6-0, and the Strikers dishing out a second dose of victory, 6-1. “Our first half was pretty average, you could tell it was our first hit-out for the season,” Spitfires coach Andrew Maggs said. “We didn’t create a whole lot of opportunities but in the second half we turned things around and held our structure, which we spoke about at half-time. Then we came out and played really well, which was really pleasing.” Josh Pritchard made a solid effort, hitting three goals for the team, with Charlie Wallace and Peter Barber also being named star players by their coach. The ladies put up a more consistent fight against La Trobe, their young team proving to be just the ticket to keep La Trobe off the scoreboard. “We had a terrific first round win against La Trobe Uni - a fantastic first-up effort,” Strikers coach Tony Jones said. “We have four senior players who are the core of the group, and then we have a heap of juniors. “Nanette Latta, Amy Allen, Alice Nicholson and then we have a heap straight out of the representative team from last year and they make
up the rest of the team - so it’s a very young team. “The good thing this year is the young players came up really well last week. Chloe Jones was in the best players and Kate Mason was another young girl who did really well.” This weekend both teams will be on the road, with the Spitfires to face Power House and St Kilda, and the Strikers up against Southern United. “It’s another away trip and I’m sure they’ll play well at the home ground, so we’ll have to play well again,” Maggs said. “(We will need to work on) our transitional play. We weren’t great at that on the weekend, so we’ll work hard at that and our basic skills a few traps and passes weren’t quite on on the weekend.” Jones is down a few players in the coming game, but hoping the rest of the girls can make up the deficit. “We have a wedding this weekend, so I have six out ... a very light and inexperienced team this week,” he said. “We play one of the very strong teams in the comp, Southern United, so that will give us a fair indication of how we’re going, I think. “The emphasis this year is on a younger squad, it was great to start with a win but give us a month and we will know where we’re up to from there.”
