Plan for growth By TREVOR JACKSON WODONGA is on the move. An average two per cent growth over the last three to four years has seen the city gain respect from the rest of the state, and more importantly the governments of the day. As a lone entity Wodonga continues to add value to the state coffers, while combined with Albury, the twin-cities play an important role in the national agenda. As chair of Regional Cities Victoria, Councillor Mark Byatt has a reasonable idea of what is happening around the state in regional areas. The latest report released from RCV notes the population in regional areas is expanding at a comparable rate to metropolitan Melbourne and estimates by 2031 the overall population could reach more than one million, up from around 740,000 based on 2011 figures. Cr Byatt said the report identified that $4.4 billion would need to be invested in enabling infrastructure and resources to support growth in regional cities between 2011 and 2031. And he says Wodonga is now a major focus for governments and businesses across the state. “We’re three hours from Melbourne and often the focus has been primarily on the catchment that is within an hour or so from Melbourne,” he said. “But more and more what we’re starting to see is governments, industry and business are recognising the advantages of relocating to regional cities like Wodonga. If you start to look at Wodonga in its own right in Victoria, it’s one of the fastest growing, more developed regional cities. “If you put that into context with Albury, you see Albury Wodonga as not only the 18th largest city in the nation but you see it as a significant economic zone in its own right. I think we’re an important player in the national agenda as far as an inland city in its own right, and at a state level Wodonga is seen as a major contributor to the liveability and the population of the state.”

Councillor Byatt said Wodonga council had continued to plan well into the future which placed it in the ideal position to attract interest from businesses and residents alike, noting successful recent developments such as The Cube and the new WAVES aquatic centre. “You can’t cater for any growth without good planning,” he said. “What the city of Wodonga continues doing, and is very good at, is forward thinking, forward looking and approaching the planning and growth of the city.” If you take the example of the Leneva Baranduda corridor, one of the biggest structural plans in the state of Victoria, that area will eventually cater for another 30,000 people. “What you really need to do is be setting up long-term plans and looking at how you’re going to develop and fund those plans. “For Leneva that means infrastructure, it means how you’re going to put in community assets, how you’re going to create green spaces.” But Cr Byatt said it was important to continue the work and stay focused on the longterm plan to ensure such future growth was sustainable. “You can’t afford to take your eye off the ball when it comes to planning for future growth, and we’re planning out to 20302040 as we speak,” he said. “We need to continue our focus on developing not only the direct CBD, but the whole central business area so we have that integration and connectivity. “We need to continue to focus on the infrastructure that makes for a liveable city, a city that almost has an urban feel about it, has urban infrastructure and urban type services but still continues to maintain a liveability and lifestyle that is regionally focused. “Regional Cities Victoria has done the research to support investment and the role regional cities play in state and national agendas. I think it’s important Wodonga is front and centre and we’re seen to be an active party to the policy agenda in that regard.” For more coverage on the RCV report, turn to pages 2 and 3.

IT SEEMS Wodonga’s recent growth is on an upward trend, with little sign of abating. That’s great for the city and the wider community, allowing Wodonga to stand on its own as one of the more prominent regional cities in Victoria. But it all comes at a cost. This week we feature a number of viewpoints from Wodonga residents and it all comes back to one over-riding factor - funding. Mayor Mark Byatt says the city is on track with future planning well in hand even as far ahead as 2040. He says growth corridors such as Leneva and Baranduda will receive the infrastructure they require to ensure the quality lifestyle that attracts people to the city. Amanda Kotzur says while it’s good to see council taking such steps as the redevelopment of High Street, more still needs to be done across the city, such as better school facilities in the newly-developed areas like White Box Rise. Local police officer Kevin Mack says infrastructure such as a youth cafe and Centrelink office would help the youth with not having to travel across the border to Albury, and councillor Rodney Wangman says the CBD redevelopment needs more development into the future. While there may seem like a lot of work ahead, one thing is for sure - Wodonga is providing a standard of living comparable to metropolitan regions without the hustle and bustle of city life, and as future plans are realised, the city is sure to continue growing, prospering and providing that relaxed lifestyle we’ve all come to enjoy.

Wodonga continues to grow and expand, as is evident at White Box Rise, Wodonga.

Boom in regions THE rate of population growth in Victoria’s 10 largest regional cities, including Wodonga, has doubled in the past five years, with predictions that Victoria’s regional cities could become home to as many as 1,030,500 residents by 2031. This new research from Regional Cities Victoria (RCV) has prompted the need for not only government organisations, but businesses and communities to come forward with suggestions for increased infrastructure. “We now look forward to working with state and federal governments, business and industry as well as our communities to develop policies and strategies to ensure our residents have access to the services and resources they deserve,� RCV Chair, Cr Mark Byatt said. “A critical component is the Regional Cities Growth Strategy which is due for completion shortly.� According to the report, annual growth rates in regional cities rose from 0.8 per cent between 1991 and 2006 to 1.6 per cent between 2006 and 2011. This compares with Melbourne’s annual growth rate of 1.9 per cent and 1.4 per cent for regional Victoria over the latest five-year period.

Cr Byatt said the data confirmed that regional cities were a part of the solution to managing Victoria’s growth, while also lessening the burden on Melbourne’s already-stretched infrastructure. “Well-planned and sustainable higher population levels in regional cities have and will continue to make a positive economic and social contribution to the whole state of Victoria through enhanced investment opportunities, more jobs, better health and education services as well as greater industry diversification,� he said. “Stronger and vibrant regions mean a stronger and more sustainable Victoria. Our cities are highly liveable with wellestablished economies and are also an appealing investment option for businesses. “While our member councils are focused on creating and maintaining terrific lifestyles for their communities, RCV will use this new research to inform a Victoria-wide strategy to prepare for and manage growth. “RCV is partnering with the State Government to deliver the Regional Cities Growth Strategy which will develop a strategic model for growth and the delivery of infrastructure to meet the long-term needs of Regional Cities.�

The report also found there are 178,860 zoned and unzoned housing lots in regional cities, which could accommodate more than 425,000 people, and 4700 hectares of zoned and unzoned industrial land in Regional Cities, which could accommodate 190,000 new jobs. Another positive aspect of the report showed that regional cities are growing in a sustainable way. Between 2008 and 2012 - a period of high growth - household water consumption declined by 5.5 per cent, electricity consumption declined by 6.5 per cent and gas by 1.9 per cent. Household waste generation rose by 4.3 per cent, compared with dwelling expansion of 9.1 per cent. Cr Byatt said the report identified that $4.4 billion will need to be invested in enabling infrastructure and resources to support growth in Regional Cities between 2011 and 2031. “It is clear that regional Victoria and Regional Cities are an increasingly attractive option for families and businesses,� he said. Amanda Kotzur - land sales manager at White Box Rise Wodonga. “I think to keep people shopping in Wodonga, we need improved retail outlets, including our plazas and particularly encouraging businesses to set up along High Street,� she said. “Certainly there’s better foot traffic there now with our altered parking conditions. “There can always be improved roads, making sure there’s great access to get where you need to - ease of access and less congestion.� White Box Rise itself has been a strong testimony to the growth of Wodonga, having grown tremendously over the past few years. In order to keep up with the influx of families moving to the area, more infrastructure will need to be added. So we asked Amanda where she thought they should start. “We have a primary school here now, so a high school would be fantastic to keep everyone within the community here to make it even more convenient for them. “We have more commercial land so there’s plenty more growth to happen here. “It’s becoming a bit of a hub now with the aquatic centre, and becoming a bit of a healthrelated community, so you can always improve on that. “And a post office would be fantastic.� Kevin Mack - Leading Senior Constable with Wodonga Police, and Deputy Mayor of Albury City. “There’s a distinct lack of youth facilities in Wodonga at the moment,� he said. “They need something like the Retro Cafe, a hub for young people so they can access the services they need - to access employment, sexual health resources, Centrelink, all these federal services that are available, without travelling to Albury. “Given Wodonga’s got one of the highestgrowing youth populations in the state, it’s critical. “We can create a hub for our young people, so why wait.� As far as roads go, Cr Mack said he believed plans were running smoothly. “I think they’re tracking along beautifully with their junction placement and the vision for the future,� he said. “But at the end of the day, there’s a lot of vision and it will be just vision if they don’t get the right sort of support from the government.�

There’s effectively 20 hectares of land there that’s controlled by or on behalf of the State Gov-

ernment of Victoria. “The last one which is really left field on all this, there’s little doubt that the primary and some of the secondary schools in Wodonga need a far better deal in terms of building refurbishment and also redesigned parking and pick-up/drop-off arrangements. “There’s little doubt that as Wodonga grows per head of population, obviously we need more schools spread across a wider area.�

Best in the business By KRYSTEN MANUEL THE votes are in and Albury Wodonga’s newest business awards were announced last Thursday night at The Cube, Wodonga. The ABC Hub People’s Choice 2013 Business Awards proudly announced that Growing Wealth Online With Fiona Fell took home first prize, followed by Bar Sushi and The Joybus. The awards are the brainchild of Albury Wodonga Business Community Hub director Zoe Wundenberg, who said she was overwhelmed with the response, with 27 nominees, 3933 votes and 30 people attending the awards night. “I was shocked, it just grew exponentially,” she said. “The awards gave businesses a reason to encourage people to support their businesses, it’s about public engagement.” Ms Wundenberg said she began ABC Hub two years ago with the

aim to provide smaller businesses with an informal way to ask questions relating to the growth of their businesses and a social media platform to assist with promotion. “ABC Hub is about helping the small business, giving them a forum where they feel secure to ask questions or seek support without feeling they’re being unprofessional,” she said. “We run family-friendly meetings for those who have children. We also do informal coffee chats where people meet for a cup of coffee, rather than an official networking event. “We can sit down and chat about things that are affecting our businesses. “It’s based on social media so it’s an opt-in community – if you don’t like it, you don’t take part in it. We provide a platform where business owners can promote what they do, whether through LinkedIn, Twitter or Facebook.”

Saving Savernake By TREVOR JACKSON COROWA’S historic Savernake Station has received due recognition from the State Government by being added to the NSW State Heritage Register. The station’s listing on the register was announced by Heritage Minister Robyn Parker who said while Savernake Station might not be the oldest or largest homestead in NSW, it could provide an invaluable contribution to our understanding of pioneer pastoral and agricultural life. The station has been in the Sloane family since 1862, currently operated by Alexander and Ann Sloane. It includes a ‘selector’s hut’ dating from 1876, a homestead dating from 1886, as well as servants’ quarters, an overseer’s cottage, woolshed and shearers’ quarters from the early 20th century. Heritage farm ma-

chinery, domestic wares, written records and high quality film and photographs of the farm under cultivation are also on display. It also includes undisturbed, indigenous woodlands. Mrs Sloane said they were pleased with having the property finally listed on the register after five years of application process, but said it wouldn’t change much regarding the way they currently operated the station. She said they regarded the Aboriginal heritage of the property as an integral part of the overall story of the station and felt the recognition would help protect all areas of property well into the future. “We have done it mainly so ourselves and the next generations are protected against any changes to our heritage and environmental history, as well as the cultural heritage here,� Mrs Sloane said. “We just wanted to make sure it all

remains intact as a whole, not to be disbursed or altered.� The announcement is also recognition of the work carried out on the property by the Sloane family over the years. “We have always been fairly careful as far as having repairs done on our historic buildings,� Mrs Sloane said. “They have to be done in sympathy with the original structural style, and with the environmental care, we’ve always been careful not to introduce any new species.� The property still operates as a working station, including dryland cropping and livestock while also accommodating visitors for farm-stay or day visits, allowing the general public to experience this historical site in an intimate manner. Kangaloola Wildlife Centre owner and operator, Glenda Elliot, found the wallabies among half a dozen other dead animals, including a mother and joey kangaroo. “It’s bad enough to shoot them but why do they cut the heads off,� she said. “I just feel like running away with the condition of the bush, the animals and everything... “These hunters come in and just slaughter whatever they see, it’s disgusting.� Another concern is the the safety of humans in the forest. This weekend a family was frightened back to their campsite as hunters tore up the bush ahead of them. “When the animals were shot, my husband went out and there was a family of three children and two adults that were walking right where the shooters were, trying to see some wildlife at night,� Ms Elliot said. “They were really frightened so they went back to their camp-

site. They heard the shooting and saw them (hunters) go past. “There’s people everywhere and it’s only a matter of time before they hit someone.� Although police from Yackandandah and Beechworth were patrolling the forest that weekend, the warning was to no avail, with hunters returning on Monday to continue their activity. “On Monday I came across three of the biggest hunting dogs I’ve ever seen - they were like rhinoceroses,� Ms Elliot said. “They were horrible dogs, the fellas had trouble controlling them.� After so much cruelty and disrespect for the bush and its inhabitants, Kangaloola is welcoming Aboriginal elders, including Nancy Rooke, to come and perform a traditional smoking ceremony on Tuesday evening. Traditional smoking ceremonies involve green leaves being burnt on a small fire, with the smoke used to engulf and essentially cleanse the area. A discussion about why the rite is being held is had and the ceremony ends with entertainment, such as dancing and singing.

Kelvyn’s first haircut since Year 11 raised nearly $5000 to fight leukaemia.

BARTENDER, Kelvyn Everett had more to lose than most, with his dreadlocks reaching almost the entire way down his back - a project seven years in the making. Kelvyn shaved for a cure at the Albion last Friday with four other keen participants, raising over $4500 alone. “I was talked into it over a couple of beers, as pretty much all stupid decisions are made,� Mr Everett said. “I thought, ‘why not?’ I’ve had the hair for seven years and a change is going to be a good thing.� Of course, Mr Everett had more inspiration than a couple of beers. “It’s a good cause, but my girlfriend lost her brother to leukaemia as well. “She loves the hair but it’s going to be good to get it all off too.� Kelvyn was extremely happy with the money raised and thanks everyone for their continued support.

On the road or in the bush EVERYONE wants a memorable family holiday or maybe just a weekend getting away from the hustle and bustle. But it often turns sour simply through a lack of knowledge about how to correctly operate a vehicle. We’ve all heard of the retired couples heading off towing a big caravan, and not really knowing much about the safety aspects, or those who purchase a four-wheel-drive to go out bush, but have never put a wheel off the bitumen before. It all spells trouble – but it doesn’t have to be that way. Wayne Roberson from Hamilton Valley 4WD Tours and Training has the experience to teach you how to safely operate such vehicles and enjoy your next break, on road, off road or in the workplace. Over 15 years of driving off road and 17 years in transport and logistics ensures Wayne can teach you all you need to know before you take the next step. “A couple of years ago I was up at Goondiwindi and I was watching a bloke trying to get an F250 with a fifth-wheeler between some trucks and up to the bowser to fill it up,� he explained. “There were a lot of guys behind him getting frustrated and him and his wife were arguing. I told him to go and have a coffee and I’d move his vehicle up to the bowser and start filling it for him. “This bloke had only every owned a little Toyota Corolla, he’d retired and went out and bought the F250 and put the fifth-wheeler on the back decided to go around Australia, but there was no thought about the overall size of the vehicle or how they were going to reverse it – that’s why he got in so much trouble.� And Wayne says it’s much the same with the four-wheel-drivers.

“My first four-wheel-drive was a Pajero and a mate of mine took me out and showed me how to use it – that really opened my eyes,� he said. “I’ve driven stock cars, I’ve drag raced, but taking a car off road, you get two wheels off the ground, it’s a totally different situation. You can’t go out and do that cold – it’s too dangerous. I’ve seen too many accidents happen where people have done that. You don’t learn a lot by sitting there studying on the internet – you need to physically do it. I’ve taken people out and as soon as you show them how to use their vehicle, they’re a totally different person.� Wayne also offers escorted tours to remote areas so people can learn along the way and enjoy the experience. “I can take people out for a one-day course or a two-day course or I can tailor a tour,� he said. “I can take them up to Cameron’s Corner, Southern Queensland, South Australia, the Victorian high country or wherever.� Wayne also recommends bringing other members of the family along to his training courses to ensure everyone understands what it takes to enjoy time away. “If people ring me and want the wife and one EXPERIENCED...Wayne Roberson from Hamilton Valley 4WD. of their children to do the course, I can do them a rate,� he said. “I can also show them how to use radios correctly, read maps, and even take videos properly. It’s all about the experience and getting everyone involved.� Wayne’s business also extends to workplace training in areas such as forklift and truckmounted crane training. French gypsy jazz By TREVOR JACKSON JAZZ fans will be treated to yet another special gig this week when Melbourne-based Ultrafox comes to the JAZZ Basement Friday night. Described by guitarist/vocalist Peter Baylor as French gypsy jazz, Ultrafox bring the infectious style of Django Reinhardt and The Hot Club of France to stage, intertwined with original material and many other “obscure” tracks. “It’s a virtuostic gypsy guitar style,” Baylor said. “We do a few Django Reinhardt tunes, there will be a few jazz standards from the ’30s from Cole Porter and people like that, plus a few originals. There will also be a few tracks people may never have heard before, some quite obscure

tunes, because we dig pretty deep.” The band will bring two guitars, double bass and violin to the JAZZ Basement, a venue they’re yet to play. “We ’ve toured around Australia a few times, we play all the jazz clubs in town, the Spiegeltent, Stonnington Jazz and we packed it out at Wangaratta Jazz in November,” Baylor said. “We haven’t brought this band up to Wodonga but I’ve been to the Jazz Basement a couple of times. I was up there about six months ago and it was a really good house. I know the jazz fans all turn out - it’s going to be fun.” The gig kicks off at 8pm with the bar open from 7.30pm. RICHARD Perso knows all too well the value of “getting back to your roots.” Having quickly found his niche in the music world, Perso will once again be performing at the Yackandandah Folk Festival this weekend – the place where it all began ... “I saw a guy at the Yackandandah Folk Festival in 2006 and he was doing this thing called a cajon which is Spanish - it’s like a square box that you sit on,” Perso said. “They use it in flamenco with their hands, but this guy was using the pedal for a kick drum as his drumbeat.” From there, Perso has added three styles of guitar (after picking up his first guitar only six years ago, I might add), three didgeridoos in different keys and his voice, to the repertoire. “I fuse it all together, no backing tracks, just go for it,” he said.

“You get more of a tonal spectrum with all the instruments and it really fills out the sound, but there’s a lot to be said for stripping it back with just a guy and a guitar as well.” Perso will be playing in one of the most talked about events of the weekend, the Yackandandah Folk Festival, and within that, the Yackandandah Hour concert that coincides with Earth Hour. The Town Hall will be totally transformed into a totally acoustic, electricity-free, intimate concert under the gentle glow of solar light – a highlight for both the audience and performers. Perso is also using the festival to launch his second album, Dreams Vs Reality. “It’s a collection of songs I wrote in the the three years between this album and the one before that,” he said. “I hope you can hear development in it, because there’s about three or four

songs in it from each year it was written over. “They’re songs about experience and what comes from travelling around, seeing new things and being in new circumstances and personal hurdles. “Dreams Vs Reality was a topic that came to mind one day. I liked the sound of it, it summed up how it’s been for me, to have this dream to be a musician and starting to see it become a reality.” The album was recorded in Brooklyn, New York, over just 15 days, yet another indicator of how fast this musician is climbing the chain of fame. “We don’t sit still for too long,” he said. Comedy less than it looks like By KRYSTEN MANUEL MOVIE: The Incredible Burt Wonderstone ANYTHING with Jim Carrey or Steve Carell is more than OK by me, and to have them together sounded like an absolute thigh-slapping riot. But I was sorely disappointed. Although it was an alright movie, the cast suggested the sort of comedy you could expect if Ace Ventura and 40-Year-Old Virgin procreated. For me and my trusty movie companion, there were no solid belly laughs, no extended chuckles and no tears of laughter brought to our eyes. The story is centred around Burt

Wonderstone (Steve Carell) and Anton Marvelton (Steve Buscemi) and their “magical friendship,” or at least that’s how they’re marketing it. The two have been fighting for years due to Wonderstone’s larger then life ego and arrogance, and his sadly lost passion for magic. New on the scene is Steve Gray (Jim Carrey), who performs magic of a different kind ... cutting himself, holding onto his pee and drilling holes in his head are not part of the “act,” because there is no act. He actually harms himself for the audience’s pleasure. The competition truly begins when Burt and Anton have a very public argument and both go from millionaires

to regular people overnight. As I’m sure you’ve guessed, this is just what Burt needs to wake up to himself. But getting back on the stage isn’t that easy, with Steve’s shock tactic “magic” in full swing. In a bid to find the next magician to earn a five-year contract at his new, top-notch resort, Doug Munny (James Gandolfini), holds a competition. The most impressive trick wins ... I hang my head in shame over this review. Being a die-hard Jim Carrey fan my whole life, it’s like committing blasphemy to give him anything less than five stars ... But it just wasn’t that funny.

Of course, it’s a description of the characters of the upcoming musical production “They’re Playing Our Song,� but in a rare twist in the tale, it also describes the actors - a married, brilliant couple who have taken on the production that hits close to home for both. “It’s definitely quirky,� Scott Irwin (playing Vernon) said. “If you asked a lot of our friends, they’d say ‘there you go, you’ve got the crazy one and the serious one’.� “So who is the crazy one?� I innocently asked. Danielle Barnes (playing Sonia Walsk) cackles in the background. “Hear that laugh? That’s not the serious one!� Scott assured me. Scott and Danielle met in 1995 when they both played in Beauty and the Beast, and have since amassed an impressive resume of

The Albury Gold Cup is now clearly established as one of the premier country racing carnivals in Australia, with a half-day public holiday having been announced. Winner of the prestigious Racing NSW award for the ‘Most Popular Country Feature Racemeeting’ in 2009, 2008, 2006, 2004 and 2003, the Albury Gold Cup is recognised as an icon event for the fast-developing city of Albury.

Some $675,800 in prizemoney, trophies and bonuses are on offer over two days, with the feature race - $170,000 Listed Commercial Club Albury Gold Cup (2000m). Race one will get underway at 1.18pm, with the last race held at 5.40pm. Fashions on the Field will be getting underway at 1pm, always with hot competition from near and far. Contestants are known to get creative with their race day outfits, combining bought items, importing dresses and even commissioning tailors to create the outfit of their dreams. Tickets this year are $25 for adults and $20 for pensioners.

YOU are about halfway there and the nausea has most likely passed and cravings have set in. Donuts, milkshakes or pickles and ice cream may sound like the perfect go-to food, but if you don’t eat sensibly during your pregnancy you may find you and your bub lacking the nutrition you need. If you are still suffering from morning sickness or nausea, small regular snacks may help you feel better and keep the queasiness at bay. And while you may think you are eating for two, it is recommended that you eat about 600KJ extra in the second trimester than you did prior to falling pregnant. If you overindulge, you may find yourself gaining a bunch of unwanted kilos that could be hard to shake after giving birth. While it’s okay to give into cravings once in a blue moon, you want to consult with your doctor about what vitamins to be taking, what foods you should be eating and what foods to avoid. According to Better Health Victoria, pregnant women need more protein, iron, folate and iodine. Folic acid supplements

can reduce the risk of neural tube defects such as spina bifida. Great foods to eat include fruits and vegetables, wholegrain breads, low-fat dairy foods, lean meats, chicken and fish which is low in mercury. Dried beans, lentils, nuts, seeds and green leafy vegetables are also excellent foods to munch on. There are many foods that pregnant women should avoid to decrease the risk of listeria infection, which is usually caused by eating food contaminated with bacteria. The organism that causes listeria infection is destroyed by heat, so properly cooked foods are not a risk. If a pregnant woman receives a listeria infection, the risk could be tragic, with a danger of premature labour, miscarriage or stillbirth. To avoid the risks, Better Health Victoria recommends pregnant women avoid soft cheeses such as brie, camembert and ricotta, though these are safe if they are served cooked or hot. Listeria can also be spread through pre-cooked or pre-prepared cold foods that will be reheated such as deli meats, pack-

MAKING the decision to build your own home can be a stressful scenario. It comes down to planning for the future of your family, choosing the right area to live in, and of course the financial situation. The horror stories circulate about clients being disappointed with the service provided by their builder and the lack of input they actually have into the design of their home. But building through Alatalo Bros has been exactly the opposite for the Mahoni family, who were just handed the keys to their new home at Fairway Gardens. Coming from a 10-square home to a modified version of the Barooga 235 with 21 squares of living was itself a blessing, but they can’t speak highly enough of the experience offered through Alatalos, which went from the initial design phase to lock-up in about 12 months. “Coming from the house we sold to be able to do this, to walk into a house like this, it’s absolutely sensational,� Loni said. “This is the first home we’ve built so we were after something that suited our budget. You walk into all the nice display homes and think you can’t afford them. “We met Michelle (Brown) and had a look at Alatalos. We were after something that was nice, but not too over the top and Michelle showed us different plans and budgets to suit us.� Loni’s wife Katrina said the inclusions were one area of the home that impressed them, allowing them to have everything they needed and a little extra input into the home’s design. “In our old house, it was so small, we

had a tiny family room,� she said. “We had a dining setting in there and a desk as well. When we were building this we decided we could include an outdoor area further down the track - it didn’t have to be there straight away. We decided we could bring that inside and have a study and activity room for the kids. Alatalos also stretched the family room out for us so it was a win-win situation.� Another highlight of the experience for the Mahoni family was the access they had to the home throughout the building process. One special touch they’d planned was the placing of ‘miraculous medals’ through the slab. Katrina said Alatalos easily accommodated their request, above and beyond what she expected. “That was very close to our hearts,� she said. “We expected the medals to be just thrown around but Matt, who was doing the concreting, was going around each room and tying the medals to the reo in the slab. He had someone following him around with a handful of medals - it was just beautiful. It’s something I’ll never forget, the kids were watching, it’s something that was very special to us.� Having been handed the keys, the Mahoni family is more than satisfied with their decision to build, rather than purchase an existing home, and they give Alatalo Bros a resounding 10 out of 10 for the overall experience. “I’m not being biased,� Katrina said. “We’ve said all the way through this to all our friends, you hear the horror stories, you think it’s going to be stressful, but I’m still waiting for the stress. There just hasn’t been any. “It has felt like home well before now.�

Corr set to score By TREVOR JACKSON ON the back of his success in the Australian Commercial Radio Awards, (ACRA) last year, Simon Corr is pumped for the upcoming Ovens and Murray season. He was awarded best sports reporter in the country in a provincial town in what he says was “a massive pat on the back”. And we’re sure to hear more from the enigmatic radio announcer when he returns to cover the league for NewsWeekly this season. Corr has never been short of a word or two, and he’s looking forward to this season with renewed vigour. He says the inclusion of many former AFL players should provide plenty of fodder for his tongue-in-cheek style of reporting. “I had a massive amount of feedback last year from the articles in NewsWeekly, so I believe it was popular,” Corr said. “And the Ovens and Murray has grown another leg this year - I think there’s something like 12 or 15 ex-AFL players who have been injected. Brad Ottens, Jason Akermanis, Jason Gram, Dean Polo, big names not long out of it, so the Ovens and Murray is going to be bigger than it was last year, if you

can believe that - it’s massive!” Corr said he heard many supporters complaining last season, saying the big names coming into the game were taking the place of youngsters eager to get a guernsey, but he doesn’t see it that way. “That’s arguable I suppose, but success breeds success,” he said. “If these clubs are going well, kids will generally stick with it. To have the opportunity to play under someone like Jason Akermanis, and that is what’s happening, it has to be a positive for the kids. I heard from North Albury, the first night Aker was there, there were 70 people at training and most of those were kids - you can’t tell me it’s bad for the kids.” Of course Corr let his grasp on the NewsWeekly tipping contest slip last season and he’s not too pleased with that result. “You’re bringing that up again?” he quizzed. “I was devastated! Did I beat you, Trev? Look, as you’d be well aware, I did win two years in a row and I could safely say I was the best local tipster on the Border, but I had a bit of a shocker last year - I think Robbie McKinlay even beat me! “I’ll be absolutely devastated if I don’t win it this year.”

Of course Corr says he has the wood on his opposition this season, even suggesting something about giving them a week’s head start. But in all fairness, after last season’s effort, I think he needs all the help he can get! Corr says he’s looking to continue in the style he did last season, and no-one will be exempt. “I’ll look to be a little bit controversial, a little bit tongue-incheek, but by and large I’ll just try to promote country football,” he said. “People will be able to read about the game on a Wednesday in NewsWeekly. I’ll be looking to preview the games and touch on what’s happened over the weekend’s round and put a spin on whatever else is happening. If last year’s anything to go on, I think we’re in for another controversial year. With names like Brendan Fevola and Jason Akermanis in the mix, controversy isn’t far away.” Simon Corr will kick of the season next week when he previews the first round of the Ovens and Murray and looks to take a decisive lead in our tipping competition.

AFTER a year of hard training and perseverance, Wodonga athletic club, Team Velocity, travelled across the country to compete in the pinnacle event of their athletic calendar, the 2013 Australian Junior Championships. The event, hosted by the Western Australia Athletics Centre, was held between 12 and 17 March, and saw over 2000 athletes compete. Of these 2000 elite athletes, five of our own made their mark, with Nathan Howse coming home with a gold medal in the under 20 men’s 4 x 100m relay. “They’re the best in the country and most of ours were in the top 12, which is very good,” Team Velocity coach, Ken Little said. Howse also ran the 100m and 200m, coming in at 13th and 9th. Samantha Little ran 59 seconds in the 400m, coming in 15th, and also competed in the 4 x 400m relay. Little ran the fastest leg of the relay at 58 seconds, the team coming in just shy of a medal in fourth place. “It was a good experience,” she said. “Not the happiest (with the time) but it makes me want to work harder for next year.” Abby Little was happy to jump a personal best in the pole vault at 2.65m, finishing up sixth overall. Mathias Evershein competed in the under 16 800m after being ill for the past month, but still managed to run a time of 2.10 minutes, making the top 15.

Finally, Jason Young also ran the 800m in an 11-person heat, running two minutes. “It was a pretty tough heat, I didn’t make it to the final,” he said. “There was a big headwind in the back straight.” Mr Little said his 800m runners were a little disadvantaged due to lack of competition in the country. “These boys are so much better than everyone else here until they get to state,” he said. “They don’t get the practice of actually being in a pack and being buffered and battered. “He (Young) got really knocked around on the back straight, he got a spike in his leg and it really put him back a bit, but he still ran two minutes. “The fourth fastest in the country ran 1.58 minutes, so you can see they’re not far off the pace.” Mr Little said he is extremely proud of his athletes. “You have to encourage athletes to make a level,” he said. “They have to experience success, even just making the nationals is a success.” Team Velocity will now enjoy three weeks active rest, then undertake their regular training again. Mr Little hopes that 2014 will welcome eight Team Velocity athletes to national level competition.
