Walk like an Egyptian ABOUT 130 excited Albury High Students will next week enjoy the fruits of their 12-month labour, when they present Aida the Musical.

“It’s a timeless love story with some really good music by Elton John and Tim Rice,” Brendan McFarlane, who will feature, said.

“My character is the captain of Pharaoh’s soldiers and is betrothed to Pharaoh’s daughter. He falls in love with a Nubian woman, who happens to be the princess of the country they’re at war with.”

Musical director Paula Rundell-Gordon said

the plot was set in Ancient Egypt and Radames, the protagonist, was destined to marry the Pharaoh’s daughter. Radames is the leader of the Egyptian Army, but while they were in Nubia, he took slaves back and one of them is Aida.

“She is the Nubian king’s daughter and, of course, they fall in love, but the Pharaoh’s daughter is still in love with him. They can’t end up together. It’s about forbidden love and unrequited love.”

Musical director Helena Kernaghan is also confident and excited for opening night, but has thoroughly enjoyed the ride.

“The best thing about this musical is that it’s an opportunity to work with everyone - to combine the arts across the school and the kids get a real buzz out of it.”

Aida the Musical will be performed at the Albury Entertainment Centre on Tuesday and Wednesday, with shows daily at 12.30pm and 7.30pm.

LONG serving AlburyCity general manager Les Tomich has quit.

Mr Tomich, who has been on sick leave since heart surgery late last year, will officially relinquish his role on 31 December.

He had a year remaining on his contract.

Council will “actively pursue” a replacement for Mr Tomich early in 2013.

Mr Tomich, who has been involved with local government for 47 years, said he was “extremely proud” of Albury.

“Everything that has been achieved in this city has been a team effort,” Mr Tomich said.

“Albury is alive and humming. I drive around and feel proud when I see the projects going on.

“I value and am proud of everything we’ve done - the Library Museum was a great project, as Volt Lane will be when completed. And I am most proud of our traineeships, which is insurance against a deficit of skills.”

Mayor Alice Glachan said AlburyCity was seen as “a leader”, largely because of Mr Tomich, who she described as “one of the best, if not the best” general managers in local government.

Mr Tomich said he would find out what was on television on Monday nights, go fishing, pursue interests in Tasmania, travel, spend time with family and “stay in and around” Albury.

Bright side of life

IS That All There Is? It was the title of a song, half of which was spoken, which made Peggy Lee famous at the end of the 1960s.

People in challenging situations today - and that’s virtually everyone would do well to keep those five words in mind.

Ms Lee, born Norma Egstrom in 1920 and who died a decade ago, knew a little about “tough times.�

Her mum died when she was four and she was abused by a stepmother.

She was diabetic, had four broken marriages, had weight and glandular problems and other life-threatening illenesses and injuries. And yet, she was the only woman to have Top 10 hits in the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s.

There are times when every one of us is worried sick about something. It might be going to the dentist or doctor, an examination or interview, meeting the boss or board, work, pay, the health of a spouse, partner or child. Or whatever.

In most cases, when this issue has come and gone, or the ‘problem’ has been tackled, we often ask ourselves: “Is That All There Is?�

Peggy Lee says “if that’s all there is (to various heartaches) my friends, then let’s keep dancing, let’s break out the booze and have a ball, if that’s all there is.�

Whatever heartaches, challenges we face - and we’ve all got them - they are not as bad as we may think.

IF Alan Cuman was given a nickname, it would be ’Counter’.

The affable Mr Cuman is the returning officer for the Wodonga City Council elections - and this weekend is in charge of the counting of votes.

Or, more to the point, the “extraction of ballot papers from envelopes.�

This will take place tomorrow, following a rush of mailed and dropped votes this week to the Victorian Electoral Commission office in Wodonga. On Sunday, a computer will count the votes, the result of the poll reached by Sunday night and announced officially on Monday morning.

This week, about 3500 votes were returned each day to VEC. There are 27,000 people eligible to vote in Wodonga. “Like everything, people leave things to the last minute and there was a rush at the end,� Mr Cuman, who has been a returning officer since 2005, said. “Ballot papers will be extracted from envelopes on Saturday and a computer will count them on Sunday. “We’re expecting 21,000 votes to be returned by 6pm Friday (today).�

Sharing the daily battle

By TREVOR JACKSON SOMETIMES the closest friendships are forged through adversity.

But you’d be hard-pressed to find any outward evidence of adversity from Gemma Steadman and Sophie Coulter.

Aged 11 and 12, Gemma and Sophie met after being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

And the resulting friendship is very special.

“If I had to pick one good thing about diabetes, it would be the people we’ve met,” Gemma said.

“When we’re doing our blood sugars together, we don’t feel different.

“If one of us is high or low, we know what it feels like, so we understand what each other is going through.”

“We feel as if we can really talk to each other,” Sophie added.

“We have fun guessing each other’s sugars (levels) and we can sometimes pick if the other one’s not looking very well and tell them.”

Sophie and Gemma undergo a rigorous daily process that includes watching what they eat - and up to 10 finger pricks to check on sugar levels.

They then need to feed the information into the insulin pumps they use to ensure the correct delivery of the lifesaving drug.

Sophie’s mother, Katie, says this is where their friendship takes another interesting twist.

“Often, when they’re together their sugar levels stay close,” she said.

“One might start high and the other low, and after a few hours they are pretty close.”

While the girls manage their diabetes through the pumps, Gemma’s mother, Meg Pronk, says it’s not a cure, but a tool to allow more flexibility in their daily lives.

“It’s only as good as the information you put in,” she said.

And the final word from Katie is sobering.

“The girls look normal on the outside, but you can’t see what’s going on inside their bodies,” she said.

“Quite simply, everything they do in life takes a lot more management.”

Katie and Meg are involved with Walk for a Cure in Albury on Sunday.

Walk for cure in steps of explorers THE Walk to Cure Diabetes will be held in Albury on Sunday.

The five.- kilometre walks starts at Hovell Tree Park at 10.30am.

It is part of a national event, which is the biggest for people with type 1 diabetes (T1D) to

raise funds to support medical research to improve the lives of the 122,300 Australians with the disease.

The Albury walk will retrace the steps of famous explorers Hamilton Hume and William Hovell, including the famous tree that Hovell carved his name into on 17 November, 1824.

A fundraising sausage sizzle, raffle, spinning wheel, jumping castle and activities for kids, including face painting, will follow the walk.

TALENTED Albury musician Emma Quirk is ’kool’ - now she’s hoping to be ’the koolest.’ Xavier High School student Emma, 17, was last year nominated for the best vocalist in the CD competition at the Kool Skools competition.

Now the talented singer and pianist wants to be nominated again - and go one better.

And judging by the inspiring display she gave in the launch of the Kool Skools CD launch locally, she will be hard to beat at the state launch in Melbourne on 24 November. “It would be great to be nominated,� she said, “and, of course, get an award.� “The best thing (about Kool Skools) is that it lets budding artists from rural areas show their talent. “It’s also a place where I can get everyone’s ideas on how I can improve.�

After a semester of work, 14 teams will battle for a host of awards, including superior craftsmanship, superior presentation, team encouragement, most innovative car and overall winner. The Solar Car Challenge was introduced as an innovative education partnership between schools and local industry in a bid to improve education outcomes for teenagers.

During the lowest times for his mum and himself, the Kidney Foundation (former name) were “extremely good” to Mr Broster, a lover of motorbikes.

He never forgot that - and he will always remember what he thought when he rode into the tranquil town of Bicheno while touring Tasmania.

“There was a motorbike show on. I was really impressed and believed we could have one (in

HEALS OVER HEADS‌ Showgoers from last year riding the high life.

Calling all show-offs ‘COME on in and see the show, come on in, the show is on.’ It’s that time of year again, when fireworks light up the sky and the screams of hundreds of delighted children fill the Albury showgrounds for the Albury Show.

This year, showgoers can look forward to impressive spectacles from the mini-bike stunt team, clever performances from Wranglers Animal Entertainment, a wood chop competition and, of course, the fireworks. “The show has been going for roughly 150 years,� show secretary Sue Hurst said. “We always offer really good entertainment and cater for the little guys, teenagers and adults.�

People will also be flocking to the show for a wide variety of art and craft displays, photog-

raphy, animal shows, cattle showing and horse events. “This year we have revised horse programs that gives competitors more classes and our horticultural section is also very strong,� Ms Hurst

said.

The show opens next Friday at 3pm and continues on Saturday and Sunday, at 9am on both days.The fireworks are at 9.30pm on Saturday.

Admission for adults is $15, $10 Sunday.

Families are $40, $20 on Sunday, children to 16 and disability pensioners are $5 while children under six are free.

I remember standing - hot, bothered, dressed uncomfortably and forcing a reluctant smile - as I waited.

They were about to announce Miss Junior Albury Show Girl and I was in the mix. Then my smile quickly morphed into a jealous scowl when my best friend won and I received some inferior prize.

But despite some ’unfair’ judging, I am like most ’Alburynians’, with fond memories of the show, of which I have been a loyal patron for the best part of 25 years.

Next weekend, I, and so many others, will

again take the annual trip down memory lane.

My memories of the show are some of my earliest - patting coloured chickens and fighting over showbag lollies with the J. Geils Band’s “Centrefold� filling my ears.

Just a few years later, I finally mustered up the courage to ride the Zipper, when gutclenching fear gave way to pure exhilaration.

So whether you’re a ’young’ veteran like me, or a first timer, make an appearance.

Let your inner child drag you to the Kamikaze, watch the fireworks and smear your face with sauce from a delectable dagwood dog.

It’s not that he didn’t appreciate the milestone, but having the service is something he recommends to everyone.

Mr Sargeant had a recent health check-up through an employer-based health scheme. He got the “all-clear”. The workplace tests take the fear out of the equation for many males reluctant to see their GP. “Working for Jacobs Toyota. we have to have a health check every year,” he said.

“We have blood tests and other tests to check for lead and other things.

“It provides peace of mind because you know you don’t have a problem, and at my age (63), that’s good.”

Border Pathology’s doctor services marketing manager, Vicky Leon, said the company was pleased the 50,000th customer came from a business taking the initiative to offer its staff annual health checks.

“We have been operating for a little less than two and a half years, so having the support of 50,000 local people is a real milestone,” she said.

The camera man DAVID Gordon was introduced to photography by his father Bryan when he was just eight years old.

It has been a passion for him since.

“I’ve had a camera in my hand for nearly 40 years. My dad, an ex-photographer, was my harshest critic,” Mr Gordon said.

Now David Gordon is set to hold his first photographic exhibition at the Creators Artspace on Lincoln Causeway between 9-11 November.

The exhibition will display 35 of Mr Gordon’s photographs, featuring landscape, wildlife and birdlife, macro nature and abstract and artistic shots. Most of the photographs were taken locally.

All photos are for sale, with some of the proceeds to be donated to the palliative care unit of the Mercy Hospital in memory of Rob Burston, Mr Gordon’s fatherin-law, and Bryan Gordon.

Albury City mayor Alice Glachan will open the exhibition on 9 November at 6.30pm.

ALTERNATIVE… Tex Perkins and the Dark Horses are coming to the Border.

Endless gigs follow sack

“I WAS a bad worker bee, an inadequate drone,” is how Tex Perkins explains his reasoning for entering the entertainment industry some three decades ago.

“Basically, the last time I was sacked from a job coincided with being offered some gigs in Sydney,” he explained.

“That opportunity was followed by another, and I haven’t looked back - it has been 30 years.”

For those familiar with the work of the enigmatic Aussie, it has been an interesting ride, an almost chameleon-like career.

Back in the days of a 17-year-old, Perkins says he was involved in the postpunk scene in Brisbane, into rock and roll, punk rock, country, and blues and roots music.

“I was playing thrashy, country blues, I guess you could call it,” Perkins said.

That was with a band called the Dum-Dums. He moved on to The Beasts of Bourbon, a project he considered, “a little bit more sophisticated”.

Another venture came in the form of

The Cruel Sea, a further change of direction with the collaboration Tex, Don and Charlie, among others.

In fact, change seems to have defined Perkins’ career - and that’s not by mistake.

“I try and avoid drudgery,” he said.

“I just keep moving and I return to projects - it’s not as if I leave them and never return.

“I’m looking forward to doing another Tex, Don and Charlie album.”

His career has also included an interesting segue with the Man in Black Johnny Cash shows.

“It worked so well, because I was so comfortable there,” Perkins said.

“It was like an old country chair to me - I could just relax in those songs.”

Perkins is bringing his latest work with the Dark Horses to the Border, and again, he has an interesting spin on the band’s style.

“It’s sort of country, but it’s not,” he explained.

“We played a country music festival at the beginning of the year and the audi-

ence didn’t really embrace us - ’you’re not country, you’re shit’, was generally the attitude.

“We kind of consider ourselves alternative country, or aggressive country.

“I guess we are, at heart, a country rock band, but we’re not satisfied with just that. We’re very interested in pushing boundaries and seeing where we can take it.

“I think we’re a little bit more forward looking, progressive than the classic country rock band.”

And punters attending the Albury gig can expect “a whole range of things”.

“Primarily, I’m bringing the Dark Horses to Albury,” Perkins said.

“But then we can also play Tex, Don and Charlie, The Beasts of Bourbon and The Cruel Sea songs.

“It won’t be the complete human jukebox of Tex Perkins, but I think, as a fan of any of those other bands, you will recognise some material.”

The Tex Perkins Dark Horses tour hits the SS&A Club on Friday, 16 November.

Many chainsaws, IEDs, dollars and the odd slap later, the film seemingly ends, only to re-attempt the ending in more feelgood fashion.

It is also worth mentioning John Travolta’s appearance in this movie. Playing the smaller, but interesting and complex role, Travolta is the dirty dealing DEA cop with a finger in every pie - and he does a damn good job.

For entertainment value, Savages is a winner - the best movie I’ve seen in a long time.

After surveying more than 1000 respondents nationally, the CAA found South Australians are spending the longest time sitting down (90.45 minutes), while Western Australians spend the least time (63.74 minutes).

The study also found workers aged under 34 were more likely than older workers to spend more time sitting down when commuting to and from work.

Another recent Australian survey has revealed more than 95 per cent of chiropractors have treated patients with commuting-related health issues.

WORKERS are putting their lives at risk by spending “a dangerous amount of time sitting” while on their way to work, claims the Chiropractors’ Association of Australia (CAA).

Research found Australians are spending an alarming 81 minutes a day commuting to and from work, leading to spinal damage and an increased risk of developing chronic disease.

And it’s men leading the way, spending an extra 20 minutes more than women commuting.

“Sitting while commuting is not only having an adverse effect on our spinal health, it’s also having a detrimental impact on our cardiovascular and metabolic health,” CAA spokesperson, Doctor Billy Chow said.

“Longer commutes are particularly dangerous as they cause spinal degeneration and inflammation that sends messages to the brain to tell the body it is stressed.

“Commuting reduces the amount of time you’re able to be active.

“It’s important Australian workers try to take a walk in their lunch break or stretch regularly for a couple of minutes to reset their postures and give their bodies a break by re-

For years, the big names in the industry have been cutting deals with competitors to provide a class of vehicle they may not offer.

Mitsubishi is no exception.

Their ASX SUV is just that - but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not Mitsubishi who is borrowing the vehicle from another maker.

The ASX platform has been embraced by Peugeot and Citroen for their 4008 and AirCross variants.

So you have to wonder how good the vehicle is in its basic form.

After testing a 4008, I was keen to get into the ASX and see what it had to offer.

The base model I tested gave a true indication of what Mitsubishi offer at the bottom end of the price scale.

Appearance says a lot about a vehicle - and the new stylish lines of the ASX certainly help.

While subtle, the facelift offers a more rounded and less aggressive look, but the large, wide grille still provides a somewhat tough stance, aided by the 16-inch rims.

Inside the appointments, while not up with the high-range 4008 I tested, are certainly of a level suitable to motorists wanting an SUV, but without the expense of some on offer.

A lack of leather, on all but the steering wheel and gear knob, signified the lower spec, but still

provided plenty of features worth looking at.

Soft-touch material on pressure points such as the elbows, is a nice touch while the easily adjusted steering column allows for most drivers to create a comfortable driving position - and still see the full range of dashboard gauges.

Technology hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t been forgotten at this level, with Bluetooth, iPod and the usual Mp3 and USB compliance.

This particular vehicle was also fitted with a reversing camera, which provided a good view on the large dash-mounted touch screen.

The screen provides controls for stereo and other settings with a simple touch, and is large enough for easy viewing.

Performance was never going to be in doubt.

The 4008 performed well on the road and there was no reason the ASX would be any different.

The two-litre petrol engine easily propelled the little SUV around town through the constant variable transmission.

A manual mode is also at hand for those wanting to take a little more control.

Highway speeds are reached with ease, whether in manual or full auto. The ride is comfortable and handling is quite acceptable for a vehicle of this type.

All in all, I was impressed with the little Mitsubishi and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s little wonder other carmakers are wanting it in their stable.

As far as bang for your buck goes, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hard to go past the ASX in its class.

Learning the appropriate technique of four-wheel-driving will vary according to the terrain being traversed. However, the basic goal is to develop a smooth driving style, which allows you to cross the country working with the terrain rather than fighting the conditions.

These fundamentals are best learnt from a knowledgeable person or specialist driving trainer.

Locally, four-wheel-drivers head to bush tracks in the High Plains, Dargo, Corryong, Stirling and Mount Hotham areas.

Driving in muddy, rocky and hilly terrain can also benefit from a slight reduction in tyre pressure, along with judicious use of low-range gears to provide safe and controlled ascents, as well as harnessing engine compression to restrict descent speed without the risk of locked and skidding wheels. Again, seek out the company of experienced people.

There will come the day of the bog - and for this reason alone, newcomers to off-roading, as well as the old stagers, need to begin building recovery kits.

These can begin with just a good snatch strap - and a couple of rated bow shackles. Where your kit goes from there is a function of experience, personal preference, whether a winch is in the equation and, ultimately, the budget

one has.

I not only encourage - but strongly advise - you seek out training courses from reputable people. Consider joining a local four wheel drive club in your area. They have organised trips - led by friendly, passionate and experienced people.

Gas days are coming GAS Energy Australia has “welcomed” research in the United States which claims there will be 22.6 million cars running on autogas by 2020.

“The autogas market is caught in a classic chicken and egg scenario,” David Alexander said.

THE fifth Border Bike Fest - on Sunday week - is set to be the biggest and best.

“There were about 80 bikes at the first show,” Mike Georgiou, of the Lions Club of Wodonga, said.

“Last year we had more than 300, and this year we’re hoping to maintain that figure. Some of the smaller groups from last year are coming with 50 or so bikes.”

Last year, $10,000 was raised for local charities. This year, with more than 100 volunteers, expectations and hopes are high for a more impressive donation.

“The event will go for about four hours but it’s feature packed.”

Among the festivities, 22 prizes will be drawn for motorcycles across a wide range of categories, using the expertise of the Ulysses Club.

“There’s a lot of custom bikes, but there’s also the purists with the classics that have been totally restored,” Mike said.

“We think it’s the best value show around. It costs just $5 to get in and kids are free.”

ORIGINALITY can mean everything in a motorcycle restoration project.

According to David Arnold, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all about how fussy you are - and heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s proving to be just that when it comes to restoring his 1904 Relay.

The bike was made by Blacklock and Fuller in Albury, as David discovered after receiving the bike as nothing more than a motor and part of the frame.

He began to dig into the archives and found a photo that represented the bike, with Al Fuller, the original builder, aboard.

The photo showed a small tag on the front of the frame, which was also present on the bike, and proved the bike was made in Albury.

As an ex-employee of Blacklocks, this made the project much more worthwhile for David.

He said this style of bike was relatively common in Australia, sold to dealers as kits, but many werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t able to be identified. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are a lot of these bikes up and running, but the owners donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know who made them,â&#x20AC;? David explained. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But this one had the tag on it - without the tag it could have been any number of veteran bikes.â&#x20AC;?

And then the work began.

WHEN was the last time you had the bearings on your trailer checked?

If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re like many trailer owners, it has probably been a while, and with the warmer weather nearly here, now is the time to take action.

Whether a standard 6x4 trailer, a boat trailer, or a caravan, the advice from Tony and Jacinta Walmsley at P&L Bearings in Wodonga is simple get your bearings checked. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The two most important things are lights and bearings,â&#x20AC;? Tony says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Most people just hook their trailers up and assume the lights are still working from last year, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not always the case.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;With bearings, if a boat has been pulled out of the water and there was water still in the bearings when the boat was parked, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be rusted.

Then the bearings will get hot and seize up. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Instead of being a $120 checkup with new bearings, it could cost $500 or more to get back on the road again.â&#x20AC;?

Tony said clients often brought trailers in that had belonged to their father or grandfather, and hadnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t had the bearings serviced for many years.

He said sometimes in those situations it was cheaper to replace the whole axle than to try to repair the bearings.

But he said everything was fix-

able. The cost depended on the damage caused, and the convenience of knowing your trailer was right to go far outweighed the minimal cost of a service. â&#x20AC;&#x153;At the end of the day, $120 to know youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re right, is better than a Saturday afternoon sitting on the side of the road, having to wait until Monday morning when someone opens,â&#x20AC;? he said.

For their $120, customers are ensured of a full check-up, including bushings and lights, and quality Japanese bearing replacement.

Prices down WODONGA house prices have dropped - unlike the rest of regional Victoria, which has remained stable.

Median house prices in the Victorian border city increased by 2.8 per cent over the last quarter, but reduced by 0.9 per cent over the year, according to Robert Larocca of the Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV).

“In rural Wodonga, the median house price went down by 11 per cent,” Mr Larocca said.

On a state level, September quarter medians demonstrate stability with residential Victorian house prices for this quarter at $307,000. In June, they were $305,000.

Wodonga’s median house price is around $272,500 for the city - and $247 000 for rural areas.

Enzo Raimondo, chief executive officer of the REIV, said while homebuyers and sellers had been “acting cautiously”, prices had remained stable. The REIV believes that once there is an improvement in consumer confidence, capital growth will return.

“The rental market has begun to tighten again,” Mr Raimondo said.

“In regional Victorian, the vacancy rate dropped from 2.7 per cent in June to 2 per cent in September.

“Over the course of the quarter, the median rent for a house increased from $290 per week in July to $295 per week in September.”

It’s that time of the year

Both may be right.

In the world of real estate, the ears - and interests - of people have risen strongly.

“It happens towards the end of one year and close to the start of another,” Clinton Harvey, of Wodonga Real Estate, said.

“People look at buying and selling at this time of year.

“Inquiries for homes have been very steady during October. That’s both for sales and rentals.”

Mr Harvey said there were “a lot less” houses on the market this year.

“A vendor may have bought a house for $300,000 five years ago, and it’s worth much the same or not much more now,” he added.

“So he/she mightn’t be keen on selling, thinking they won’t be making much. But it works for them when he/she wants to upscale and look for a bigger home in the $380,000 to $400,000 range.

“While the price for their home mightn’t be terrific, there has never been a better opportunity to get into a bigger home at a better price.

“I think you can say the same across the board.”

DISCOVER… Albury Wodonga Yacht Club is urging people to come and experience the excitement of sailing on Sunday at Lake Hume.

BANDITS star import Mohamed Ntumba has re-signed with the club.

“Momo’s work ethic, physicality and mental toughness were a key ingredient this year,” coach Brad Chalmers said. “We are delighted he will be back, it shows wonderful commitment to what we are about as a club.”

The Bandits recently lost championship player Jazz Ferguson, who has moved to Bendigo.

Meanwhile, staff at the Lauren Jackson Sports Centre are readying for a hectic November - spearheaded by the return of Jackson. Australia’s flagbearer at the recent Olympic Games will suit-up for the Canberra Capitals in their clash with Bendigo Spirit on 18 November.

“In terms of events, November is competition time here,” Michael Stanton, manager at the LJSC, said. “There’s something on every weekend.”

It starts on 3 and 4 November with the 30th annual badminton tournament for veterans - to be followed a week later by the Twin City basketball senior classic. Then there’s the Jackson show, before the Murray River basketball jamboree for Under-12s.

“We’ll have sides from most states and New Zealand here,” Stanton said.

Wind in your sails ALBURY Wodonga Yacht Club is opening the hatches on Sunday - for a day of discovery.

The Discover Sailing Day is an initiative of Yachting Australia and is designed to introduce more people to the experiences of sailing.

And where better to discover the sport than on the banks of Lake Hume?

The club will be open for tours with a licensed cafe and the wood-fired pizza oven operating.

More importantly, people unfamiliar with sailing can seek advice about the sport, and how to access training services for children and adults.

They can also find out about the Sailability

program, designed for people with disabilities, which has proved most popular.

There will also be a national Discover Sailing Day prize.

Fill out a registration form and you’re in the draw to win a one-week charter in the Whitsundays for six people on a monohull boat.

The prize includes two adult return airfares to the Whitsundays.

Margaret courts success MARGARET Whittaker knew last Saturday night was going to be a good one - but she didn’t realise it would become one of her most memorable.

Community-minded Marg was in a 60-strong crowd at a dinner to celebrate 50 years of playing netball at the J.C. King courts.

Marg, who used to ’tag along’ to the courts with her parents in the early days at the J.C. King courts, was presented with a plaque at the end of the night.

“But wait,” she was told, “there’s more.”

On Monday night, the Albury Netball Association named one of the courts after Marg Whittaker.

“I was gobsmacked,” Marg said.
