WAVES makes a splash AFT a long, hot summer, WAVES hit Wodonga this week with a splash. AlburyCity Mayor Cr Alice Glachan says construction will commence mid-year.

Six bloody idiots By KRYSTEN MANUEL

Gallery go-ahead By KRYSTEN MANUEL MONDAY night’s decision to approve the Albury Regional Art Gallery has ended a year of increasing controversy over the issue. AlburyCity is to contribute $2.5 million in additional funds and proceed with the Albury Regional Art Gallery redevelopment. “It’s part of our cultural precinct master plan and its something the council and been looking at for many years,” AlburyCity Mayor, Alice Glachan said. “We’ve been offered $3.5 million from the Federal Government, so we’re delighted that we can now take up that offer. “My understanding is that the $3.5 million is in fact the greatest funding that AlburyCity Council has been offered for any project that we have undertaken.” The $10.5 million project will be funded with $6 million from AlburyCity, $3.5 million from the Federal Government and $1.05 million yet to come from private and philanthropic sources. If the council fails to successfully pursue the extra $1.05 mil-

lion, it will underwrite any shortfall. The much anticipated decision is bound to ruffle some feathers, with many residents rejecting the proposal for the council to step in where the State Government would not with the original tripartite funding arrangement. Cr Glachan said the report that went before council detailed the level of community support for the project. “Of the1100-odd people that replied to that survey, 50 per cent were in support of us spending that additional money,” she said. “It was less than 50 per cent that were against that. “We also had another program running where we had direct feedback from a number of residents as well - the feedback we received was overwhelmingly in support.” Council will now finalise a funding agreement with the Federal Government with a view to completing the project by June 2015 to meet funding deadlines. Although the State Government does support the redevelopment, it will not be available for the

art gallery upgrade in the short term. Instead, the council will pursue funding for the Lavington Sporting Complex and stage two of the emergency management centre. “The State Government doesn’t have funding for capital works within the arts,” Cr Glachan said. “Other portfolios do have capital funding for infrastructure and we believe that the Lavington Sports Centre and the emergency centre are two areas where there is capital funding within NSW and we will be able to apply for a number of those grants.” Construction on the gallery is expected to commence mid-year, although a date has not yet been set. “This is a fantastic project for Albury that fits with the community’s vision for our city as outlined by Albury 2030,” Cr Glachan said. “We’ve been recognised as one of Australia’s most liveable cities and having first-class regional facilities and attractions such as this art gallery will only enhance that reputation.”

OPERATION Drink Drive 1 (ODD1) was a success across the state of NSW, though Albury Police are disappointed in the six drink drivers caught around the area. “There was just short of 3000 breath tests conducted and about 134 traffic infringement notices issued for a range of infringements,” Albury Police Sergeant Dean Miller said. Sgt Miller said six drink drivers were caught. Of the six, one 41-yearold woman on her P2 licence exhibited a high-range PCA at .215 and was caught on Friday at approximately 9.30am on David Street. Across the state during Operation Drink Drive 1, which commenced at 12.01am on Thursday and concluded at 11.59pm on Saturday, nine people were killed on the roads, 110,030 breath tests were conducted and 139 motorists were charged with drink driving offences. During the same period last year, less tests were conducted at 131,494, but more than double the charges were laid at 316. Operations commander of the NSW Police Force’s Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, Superintendent Stuart Smith, said despite a significant reduction in the number of motorists caught drink-driving, the results were still disappointing. “The figures are down more than 50 per cent on last year, but too many people are still taking the risk and driving while over the limit,” Sgt Smith said. “Again I am pleading for people to heed our warnings; if they take the risk to drink and drive then they will be caught.” Sgt Miller said the state-wide effort should be a big reminder to people that the police were targeting these kinds of behaviour continually. “One drink driver is one too many for me,” he said.

IN THESE tough economic times we so often hear of people struggling to make ends meet, the average families battling to survive with the rising cost of living. It often seems the governments of the day are ruthless with their policies, more interested in their own political survival than that of the Aussie battler. But here on the Border there’s an organisation set up to help those in need, and without judgement. The Carevan has been prominent on the Border for a few years now and has established itself on exactly that premise. But they not only feed hungry, struggling families in the region - they do so much more. They have taken over the running of the Midnight Basketball, set up to help the youth of our community who may not have the chance to compete in regular sport, and along the way provide life workshops to improve the social skills of those participating. And this week we report on the work they are currently involved in - providing an outreach centre for drug-and-alcohol-affected youth. In fact, it seems there’s nothing The Carevan can’t handle. The work undertaken by The Carevan CEO Jodie Tiernan and her team is priceless to the Border, and a quick chat with Jodie shows her true passion for giving. She, and her organisation embodies all that is charitable. And one simple quote from Jodie in the story on page three this week speaks a thousand words: “Who are we to judge anybody?

Captain Pete singing his sea shanty style songs for a St Patrick’s Primary School Grade 5 class.

By KRYSTEN MANUEL LOCAL author, musician and award-winning bush poet, Peter Klein (aka Captain Pete) launched the third book in his Mudpoo adventure series last Thursday to a class of mesmerised St Patrick’s Primary School kids. The special guests were invited to get involved in a very active storytelling of the new book which was set in Bethanga.

Mr Klein also took the time to explain the creative process behind his work as he introduced the story with interactive song. “My books are about making a difference, Mr Klein said. “They have an environmental twist and they’re a great resource for teachers. For more on Peter Klein and his books, visit www.mudpoo.com.au

Millie soars on Eagle’s wings A WODONGA teenager who shaved her head for cancer research has been recognised for her work in raising awareness of the disease. Millie Newman was presented with Wodonga council’s Eagle Award for February, which recognises residents who are involved in the community and helping others. At just 14, Millie has been involved with the Relay For Life organising committee for two years. Last year she became a member of the newly-formed youth committee and played a huge role in fund-raising activities and publicity. In a personal effort she also raised close to $2000 for cancer research by shaving her head at last year’s Relay for Life.

Millie was inspired to get involved with Relay For Life after she lost her nine-year-old brother, Jordan, to leukaemia nine years ago. Her family was again touched by cancer after her grandfather lost his battle with the disease three years ago. In addition to Relay for Life, Millie is also heavily involved in extracurricular activities at her school, Catholic College Wodonga, and recently helped choreograph a school dance production. Last Christmas, she raised funds for the MS Society by helping her grandmother wrap presents at the Lavington shopping plaza. Her ambition for when she leaves school is to open a dance studio for disadvantaged youth.

Border’s ice age By TREVOR JACKSON WITH the recent closure of the Granya House drug and alcohol centre, those on the Border with addictions are suffering, with nowhere to seek long-term help to overcome their addictions. But The Carevan is looking to step in and fill the void by creating an outreach centre for those affected. The Lap It Up Challenge is fast approaching and Carevan CEO Jodie Tiernan is urging Border residents to take part. Participants can complete as many laps as possible of the 600-metre course set out at Baranduda Reserve, Wodonga in the allotted two-hour period. All funds from entry fees will go towards ensuring the new facility becomes a reality. Ms Tiernan says the importance of the work cannot be underestimated, as the effects of the use of drugs such as ice span the wider community, not just the user. “What’s going on here, first and foremost, is there are lots of break-and-enters because people want the money to buy the drugs,” she said. “They go into Nolan House and are treated - psychosis is the biggest problem with ice use – but to get back from that, they don’t know how to live their life again. It really is sad to see.” Ms Tiernan said while The Carevan was unable to continue the service as a residential program, they were looking to create the outreach centre for drugand-alcohol-affected youth, offering them somewhere to go after treatment. And having witnessed first-hand the effect ice has on the mental state of users, she understands the need for such a service. “I’ve been a support person for a young lady who was an ice addict for two years,” Ms Tiernan said.

The man behind the mask By KRYSTEN MANUEL Jodie Tiernan is urging Border residents to support the Lap It Up Challenge. “She was in a high dependency unit and it was just horrific. But after treatment and seeing psychiatrists and so on, where does she go now? There’s actually nowhere for them to go. “In the past there was nothing like ice available. We have kids around our streets now starting the drug as young as 10. We need to get out and make a difference, to re-train these kids once they’ve been into treatment. “This ice epidemic is everywhere and it’s just destroying families, destroying our children – some people never come back from the trip they’re on – it’s just horrible.” Ms Tiernan said while it was easy to judge a drug user, people needed to look at the bigger picture, the real reasons for such actions. “No child ever asks to be born into a family of poverty, sexual abuse, or

domestic violence, but unfortunately, through circumstances, things do happen and they do end up trying drugs, so we should try to help these people,” she said. “Who are we to judge anybody?” Those wanting to help can participate in the Lap It Up Challenge taking place on Saturday 6 April or go to The Carevan website to offer further assistance yearround. “It can be as simple as company employees wanting to donate a dollar each week from their pay,” Ms Tiernan said. “It all goes to The Carevan and they receive a tax-deductible receipt at the end of the financial year. “If we could get 3000 people on board, those funds can help us to keep running these programs.” For further details, go to www.carevan.com.au.

EVER wondered who Humphrey B. Bear really was? How about the Bananas in Pyjamas? Iggle Piggle or even Fat Cat? Well it just so happens that the man behind Wags The Dog of the children’s sensation, The Wiggles, is none other than a graduate of our very own Flying Fruit Fly Circus - Nick Hutchinson. Hutchinson moved to Albury at just 15 years old after seeing the Flying Fruit Flies perform, leaving behind his previous life as an elite gymnast in Sydney. “The change, for me, was needed, because you get sick of training six hours a day and not having a social life,” Hutchinson told NewsWeekly. “I thought the circus would be more fun, and it was.” The Flying Fruit Fly Circus is the only youth circus in Australia, with several highly regarded trainers within the industry.

“We actually want to pay tribute to that fantastic school because his (Hutchinson’s) skills are just amazing, you can tell he’s pretty well taught out there,” Blue Wiggle, Anthony Field said. “It’s something to be proud of, it’s really great!” Hutchinson joined the Wiggles at the end of last year and is enjoying making new friends and embracing new skills. “I do a lot of handstands and cartwheels and I was the first ever Wags to do a back flip on stage, so I was pretty happy about that,” he said. “I’m learning a whole lot more than I expected to - singing and dancing and I’m actually playing songs on stage.” Hutchinson not only plays Wags The Dog, but performs as a wiggly dancer and is starting a new role as Ringo the Ring Master. “I love it,” Hutchinson said. “It really is fun.”

They’re making WAVES

The new WAVES facility will provide a stateof-the-art centre for Wodonga residents.

The bucket was a feature enjoyed by many youngsters at the opening of the WAVES facility on Saturday.

WODONGA celebrated the long-awaited new outdoor pool facility, WAVES, in style on Saturday, with a large crowd attending the free family fun day. The complex is being managed for the Wodonga shire by the YMCA. The facility was originally planned to be open in early December last year and despite the delay, YMCA area manager Andrew Mundy was excited about the belated launch. “There have been a few teething problems that created a delay to the launch but it’s all systems go now, and it was great to see so many members of the local and district community come along and enjoy the day,” he said. The main swimming area consists of a 50-metre, 10-lane heated pool, and will provide greater flexibility for programming events, activities and general usage. The facility also includes environmental design elements to reduce water and energy usage,

Wodonga Mayor Mark Byatt officially launched the complex with a brief address thanking the builders and major stakeholders for their commitment to the $10.3 million project. “It was a historical day for Wodonga and its residents with this facility set to serve generations of locals over a long period,” he said. “It has been an exciting project and the finished product is a wonderful result.”

The Wodonga Sports and Leisure Centre will open its doors for the Premier’s Active Family Challenge.

Month of family fitness By KRYSTEN MANUEL

WODONGA residents are being urged to sign up for the Premier’s Active Family Challenge and enjoy some fantastic opportunities to get active and get fit. Beginning 4 March, the challenge involves participants doing 30 minutes of activity every day for 30 days, and the Wodonga Sports and Leisure Centre will be the place to be. “We’re providing 20 visit passes for families who register on the Better Health website,” Wodonga Sports and Leisure Centre Director Craig Hortin said. “Those 20 passes will give people access to a range of activities. They’re all family friendly designated activities and there’s quite a number on our group fitness timetable. “We also have some family

fun swims so people can come down and swim, we have a family beep test on Sunday 10 March and Sunday 14 April, and every weekend we have the stadium set up so families can come down and shoot some hoops and have some fun.” This year the challenge is a family-focused program which this year has an extended focus on schools, work teams, community groups, housemates and many more forming ‘families.’ Team leader Healthy Together Wodonga, Claire Taylor, says participants will receive a number of incentives, advice on activities and helpful information on leading a healthy lifestyle during the challenge. “From next week, students from Wodonga primary schools will be given an active tips calendar to take home which

includes community events, national days of significance and ideas on how to get physically active,” she said. “Some of the ideas are as simple as taking the dog for a walk in the park, playing a game of backyard cricket or cleaning the car. “These are activities that all the family can get involved in and are easily accessible to most people any day of the week.” In 2012, the program attracted more than 80 000 Victorians. Mr Hortin hopes more people sign up for the challenge, deeming the aims of the program, “vitally important.” “A fit family is generally a happy family,” he said. “We love seeing people active together, that’s what the challenge is all about.”

Not just pins and needles By KRYSTEN MANUEL ALTHOUGH acupuncture is becoming more and more popular, many people have not tried it and still remain in the dark about what acupuncture is, what it’s not, and the diverse spectrum of problems it can assist with. The first thing you need to know about how acupuncture works, is that it encourages your body’s healing properties. Riverina Acupuncture Clinic acupuncturist, Kathryn Kernaghan explains. “In Chinese Medicine acupuncture is used to balance imbalances within the body. It’s main effect is to to encourage circulation and help the body heal itself, and to promote better flow of energy or chi,” she said. The most common misconception about acupuncture is that it is painful. Compared with regular needles, acupuncture needles are much thinner, solid rather than hollow and flexible rather than rigid. An acupuncture needle is inserted quickly through the skin’s surface until you feel tingling, warmth or pressure in the area of the needle. After a few minutes, these sensations fade away and you are left with a feeling of heaviness and deep relaxation. “It’s actually quite pain-free, you do feel a sensation with the needles, but it’s not what you would imagine,” Ms Kernaghan said. Another common misconception

is that acupuncture only works if you believe in it. While it is great to walk into a treatment with a positive mindset, a qualified professional will address your needs whether you believe in them or not. Some people believe that acupuncture is only good for pain. While it is effective in dealing with all types of pain, its effects are not simply limited to pain management. “Acupuncture gives great results for anything from digestive issues to emotional problems like depression, as well as other problems like pains and aches and arthritis,” Ms Kernaghan said. “People aren’t aware of the variety of things it can treat. It helps with so much more than just muscle aches and pains, internal issues can be treated with acupuncture too. “I’ve just done an induction with labour, so ladies that go overdue, we can help induce labour, as well as assisting IVF. “I have also recently completed a treatment plan with a lady who was suffering from a bad cyst on her pancreas. “We have managed to get that to shrink to be pretty much non-existent, which the doctor is very happy with.” And the best news? Acupuncture is included in many health care plans. To dispel the myths, call Kathryn Kernaghan at Riverina Acupuncture Clinic on 0450 677 833.

Foot care for kids KIDS are always on the go and on their feet, but are their feet up to all that activity? Most of our daily activities start with our feet, so we need to look after them. With kids being so active while growing and developing, it’s even more important you help keep their feet and legs functioning well. Albury podiatrist Dr Marni Gray, from Foot and Leg Pain Clinics has some expert tips to help keep your kids one step ahead. Make sure kids change out of school shoes and into appropriate sports shoes for after school sports and recreational activities. With the warm weather still upon us, ensure kids don’t play sports or engage in prolonged physical activities in thongs or flip-flops. Shop for footwear at the end of the day to accommodate for normal swelling. Feet can swell by up to 10 per cent during the course of a normal day. Make sure shoes, especially school shoes are properly fitted, supportive and comfortable. Don’t buy shoes that require a break-in period. Shoes

should be comfortable straight away. Don’t rely on perceived ‘advances’ in footwear to treat pain, discomfort or decrease risk of injury. Always seek proper advice and treatment from a qualified podiatrist with experience in sports or musculoskeletal concerns to prevent and treat pain and injury. Be careful of off the shelf foot products such as innersoles and arch supports. Properly and individually prescribed devices by a qualified and experienced podiatrist who has expertise in sports or musculoskeletal concerns should be used to ensure devices are correct and safe. Such podiatrists understand the functional requirements for positive changes. “It’s very important to get any foot and leg pain checked by a practitioner who keeps up to date with the latest medical research and treatments and who looks past the symptoms to find the cause of concerns, Dr Gray said. “There is often a simple solution to foot and leg pain and concerns, you just need the right treatment and advice.

THERE are many wives’ tales and myths surrounding the curing of cancer, but one thing we all should do to both prevent and treat cancer is incorporate some more spices into our diet. It’s amazing what these small additions to our meals and beverages can do - aside from taste fantastic and colour up a dish. The following is a list of spices that contain a diverse and lengthy list of properties for aiding cancer management. Turmeric/Curcumin: The king of spices when it comes to dealing with cancer diseases. Turmeric contains the powerful polyphenol Curcumin that has been clinically proven to retard the growth of cancer cells causing prostate cancer, melanoma, breast cancer, brain tumour, pancreatic cancer and leukemia among a host of others. Curcumin promotes cell death and safely eliminates cancer breeding cells without posing a threat to the development of other healthy cells, contrary to conventional radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Fennel: Armed with phytonutrients and antioxidants, fennel contains anethole, that resists and restricts the adhesive and invasive activities of cancer cells. It suppresses the enzymatic regulated activities be-

hind cancer cell multiplication. One great way to eat fennel is a tomato and fennel soup. Saffron: A natural acid called crocetin is the primary cancer-fighting element that saffron contains. It not only inhibits the progression of the disease but also decreases the size of the tumour by half, guaranteeing a complete goodbye to cancer. Though it is the most expensive spice in the world, a few saffron threads come loaded with benefits you won’t regret paying for. Cumin: A portent herb with anti-oxidant characteristics, cumin seeds contain a compound called thymoquinone that checks proliferation of cells responsible for prostate cancer. So, instead of loading your usual snack options with calories and oil, add this seasoning to your bread, fried beans or sauce and make the dish rich in flavour and high on health. Cinnamon: It takes not more than a half teaspoon of cinnamon powder every day to keep cancer risk away. A natural food preservative, cinnamon is a source of iron and calcium. Useful in reducing tumour growth, it blocks the formation of new vessels in the human body. Oregano: More than a pizza or pasta topping, oregano con-

firms its worth as a potential agent against prostate cancer. Consisting of anti-microbial compounds, just one teaspoon of oregano has the power of two cups of red grapes! Phyto-chemical quercetin present in oregano restricts growth of malignant cells in the body and acts like a drug against cancer-centric diseases. Cayenne pepper/ chilli: A promising spice with anti-cancer properties, an overdose of chilli peppers however should be restrained. Capsaicin induces the process that destroys potential cancer cells and reduces the size of leukemia tumour cells considerably. It can be concluded that apart from setting our tongues on fire, chilli peppers can scare cancer pathogens off too. Ginger: This humble spice boasts of medicinal qualities that help lower cholesterol, boost the metabolism and kill cancer cells. Easily added to vegetable dishes, fish preparations and salads, ginger enhances the flavour in cooking. You will notice that all of these spices are common and easy to buy at your local supermarket, and it doesn’t take much to incorporate them into your daily diet!

By TREVOR JACKSON SUBARU has a long history in the off-road market and has forged a reputation for quality and reliability. The symmetrical all-wheel-drive offered is tried and tested over many years of rallying and general off-road use, and continues on in the new Forester range. While some companies are offering frontwheel-drive versions of SUVs, Subaru has stuck with the all-wheel-drive-only offering in the Forester, with a few little extras that make the vehicle a safe and pleasurable package to drive. Safety features abound, and the EyeSight technology, something I consider should be a standard fitment in all family vehicles. I tested a Subaru Liberty with the same technology last year and was impressed, and I’m still just as impressed with its inclusion in the Forester. Basically a pair of cameras are mounted either side of the interior rear-view mirror to keep an “eye” on what’s happening ahead. It provides information on lane deviation, emitting an audible warning should you stray across the lines, and when used in conjunction with the cruise control, will keep you a safe distance from the car ahead and brake to avoid collisions where possible. It all sounds a little “big brother”, and when the Forester decides to break if it perceives danger ahead, it can be a little disconcerting, but that’s exactly what it’s designed for. As I discovered, driving at the speed limit down Moorefield Park Drive in Wodonga, even at slower speeds there are those who like to take risks and pull out in front of oncoming traffic when they really should wait. The EyeSight technology reacts quickly to avoid such impatience from other motorists. It isn’t fail-safe technology, in that you can’t just let the EyeSight take control - there still needs to be a little sensibility provided from behind the wheel, but it’s certainly a great feature. The Forester I tested was the mid-range 2.5L 6-speed automatic petrol version and the EyeSight technology was an option at an extra $1500 - but I reckon it’s well worth the dollars, just for that peace of mind.

Subaru keeps on keeping on Having said that, I repeat my earlier statement - this technology should be standard on all family vehicles. But on to the other features of the Forester. The vehicle is a decent-size family SUV, with good visibility to the rear, and the inclusion of a rear-view camera is an added bonus - you never know who is playing behind such a large vehicle. Cabin space is more than adequate both front and back, and while luggage space may be somewhat compromised by the inclusion of a full-size spare wheel, I know what I’d rather have. That said, there is still ample room behind the back seat to load the Forester up. Seating is quite comfortable and all the modcons are included, from Bluetooth to iPod to USB and so on, all displayed on the large centremounted screen and easily navigated by a couple of toggle switches on the steering wheel. The six-speed Lineartronic CVT transmission includes paddles on the steering wheel for manual shifting, but in full auto mode provides smooth, continuous acceleration. Another feature is the X-Mode option de-

SUZUKI

signed for off-road driving when the going gets a little tougher. The features offers better traction in slippery conditions and more control on downhill sections, keeping the off-road capabilities of the Subaru intact. On loose gravel the Forester certainly feels sure-footed and on the bitumen it performs and handles well, despite substantial ground clearance. It’s no sports car, but I found cornering ability on the black stuff to be quite satisfactory compared to many other SUVs I’ve tested. And the extra ground clearance offered is sure to appeal to those heading out bush on the weekends to a favourite fishing or camping destination. Performance is what you’d expect from a Subaru, with no problems keeping up with the local traffic or accelerating to highway speeds, and once up to speed the ride is very quiet and comfortable. All in all it’s a very impressive package and well worth a look if a family SUV is on your wish list.

Spoilt for choice I STILL remember the sheer joy and exhilaration of when I first ventured out onto the road on my own, having just gained my learner’s permit. A lot of time has passed since then, but the feelings of freedom and being immersed in my environment, alive to everything around me are still there! Whether you are 17 or 57, the same emotions run through your body. This is one of the remarkable things riding a motorcycle can bring; a kinship that crosses the divides of age, gender and socio-economic groups. We are all motorcyclists sharing a common bond. In 2013 we are spoilt for choice with a huge array of safe, affordable motorcycles to choose from, no matter what type of riding adventure you choose to embark on. The LAMS (Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme) which covers most of Australia, allows newly licensed riders to ride motorcycles with a maximum engine capacity of 660cc, as long as they appear on the approved list of bikes. This can be found on the various state licensing authority websites like VicRoads or the Roads and Maritime Services. Whether you need a cruiser or a small capacity commuter to get back and forth to work, a bike to cross the Simpson desert or travel around Australia, or a sportsstyle bike as a step along the way to your dream of owning a state of the art 1000cc sports bike, there is something for you.

Everything from medium-size cruisers, to city commuters and even sports bikes such as this Kawasaki Ninja are available for the learner rider. Another facet of motorcycling that has come along in leaps and bounds in the last 30-plus years is the huge range of safety gear available to make your experience a more enjoyable, comfortable and most importantly, a safer pastime. An hour spent at your local motorcycle store being correctly fitted and viewing what is available to meet your budget and intended type of riding and conditions is something I would strongly recommend. Not only will you enjoy your riding experience more, but in the event of a mishap, the correct gear can make all the difference.

And I can’t stress strongly enough the benefits of approved rider training for those coming into motorcycling. While compulsory in some states or areas, this is not always the case so ask your local motorcycle dealer for some advice on what is available in your area. So whatever path you choose with motorcycling I hope it brings you as much safe enjoyable pleasure as it has me for all these years, and share with my newly licensed customers the same words that were said to me all those years ago - Give way to the person on your right and the idiot on your left! Wise words, that I still apply to this day.

Great to be a learner By TREVOR JACKSON

LEARNER riders have plenty to choose from these days, with many larger motorcycles listed as being approved for those stepping out for the first time. And while many may opt for the larger capacity machines, it’s interesting to note 250cc bikes have come a long way, and Suzuki’s Inazuma 250 is a classic example. But the Inazuma is designed not only for the learner - it could also be well utilised as a cheap city runaround for those wanting to commute with ease and frugality. Outwardly the bike is physically large enough to provide a safe feel, yet low enough to allow shorter riders to

comfortably reach the ground at traffic lights. The front blinkers blend well into the minimal bodywork and there’s a nice set of chromed twin mufflers for a touch of style and street cred. The large analog tachometer takes pride of place in the well-designed instrument cluster with the remaining information coming from digital readouts which include speedometer, clock and a gear indicator to keep track of what’s going on, plus a couple of other gauges. On the road the fuel injection ensures responsive throttle control and provides enough zip to navigate city traffic comfortably. The engine actually sounds quite

nice for a small power plant, with a “busy hum while working through the six-speed box in the sweet spot of the rev range. For a small bike it feels sure-footed, handles well, drops into corners easily and responds instantly upon exit. Out on the highway it isn’t as impressive, but it does hold the speed limit with ease, and of course it isn’t a long-distance cruising bike anyway. The city streets are where this bike belongs and it feels right at home in that environment. It’s a fun little bike to ride and power-wise, is certainly a safe option for young riders to gain much-needed experience before stepping up to highpowered machinery.

Is the Inazuma the perfect city commuter?

The best off road By TREVOR JACKSON ARE you looking to head off on that epic outback trip, or maybe wanting to escape to the mountains on the weekend? Then Get Off Road is the place to go for the right advice and everything you’ll need to ensure an enjoyable experience. Years of off-road adventures has given business owners Terry and Robyn Bradbury the knowledge to provide expert advice and they stock the products to back it up from IRONMAN 4x4, ECB, Rhino Rack, Bushman and many others. “We head up to the high country a couple of times a year but we do a lot more outback travel trips now than anything,” Terry said.

“And that’s not just in 4WDs - we used to do Variety Bashes as well so we’ve seen a lot of the outback.” And it’s that experience that is invaluable to customers at Get Off Road. “A lot of people planning trips can simply come in for a bit of advice,” Terry said. “People often read forums and come in thinking they need a lot of equipment but they may not need to spend $5000 on diff locks. They can put that money to better use on things like a fridge or generator or other gear. “A lot of people retire and buy a 4WD to travel but don’t have a lot knowledge about what is out there. This is the sort of place you can come to if you’re not quite sure what you need. I try to offer as

much advice as I can.” But it’s the diversity of the business that also seems to be a hit with customers. “We sell a variety of products for 4WD or off-road use,” Terry said. “But we also have a workshop where we do fitting, roadworthies, exhausts and other mechanical repairs. We can also do wiring jobs on caravans and camper trailers or fit custom exhaust systems to vehicles. If we can’t do the job we’ll pass you on to someone who can.” So for all your off-road products and friendly service and advice drop in to see the team at Get Off Road at unit 3/12 South Street, Wodonga or phone 02 6024 3888.

Terry Bradbury has a wealth of knowledge and ample stock on hand your all your 4X4 needs.

Man of the moment By KRYSTEN MANUEL

“I WAS getting frustrated and caught up in the whole machine mentality of having your music a pure source of your livelihood, so I really just wanted to strip everything back, redefine myself as an artist, to do something different and really try and push some boundaries.” In the lead-up to his Albury performance, Paul Ridge (Drapht) warns fans he will be performing three new songs that take him and his audience back to his roots as an artist. “They threw a few people off guard but they’re songs that I’m really proud of through and through,” he said. Drapht has found his success has snowballed, but has not forgotten the importance of appreciating the moment. “With our genre specifically, a lot of people tend to delve back into the past instead of really appreciating what we have in this time and space now,” he said. “I’ve never been one to have future expectations. I just work day by day and I have done so for the last four and a half records.” And it seems to be working for him. With an ARIA number 1 album, two platinum singles, a gold single and a certified gold album, Drapht is following the same model of success he was in the very

Drapht is back in Albury and looking forward to a reliably energetic crowd. beginning. “It was just about a creative outlet for me from the beginning,” he said. “But I got sick of working for the man. I was a roof carpenter at the time and I was miserable. “I quit my job, put everything into my music and from that belief alone, it sky-rocketed. “Then came the success of Jimmy Recard and that record and I started living off my music. “I didn’t have the belief in myself to take it all the way, but when I found the belief I could push my-

self to the next level.” Drapht will be performing at The New Albury Hotel on 3 March and is looking forward to a familiar Albury crowd. “I love Albury,” he said. “Everyone’s down to have a good time and that’s why I do this. I want to play in front of people that really appreciate my music. “It’s worlds away from that big city mentality, everyone’s just so cool and friendly, and just down to have a good time. “It means the world to me, that sort of environment.”

Sounds good

Now with nine speakers and nine ampliďƒžers, one package.

A PRODUCT that came of age in 2012 was the sound bar. This speaker system that is connected by the digital output of a television has provided some relief for the poor audio performances of many current-day televisions. We saw a few years ago the sound bar used for simulated surround sound systems with inflated price tags and it would look as if the concept would fade out as just another fashion. But 2013 will be the year of the sound bar. During the course of the past month a number of leading specialist audio companies have seized upon this category to

make this a music product, not just an extension speaker for the television. To be released in March from Sonos is a sound bar with a difference, possibly a product that will revolutionise the living room entertainment arena. Sonos has been known as the trail blazer when it has come to wireless audio and Sonos has succeeded where many others have failed. Until now we have not had the capacity to combine a quality theatre sound with an audio system quite like this. Imagine a nine speaker sound bar with two rear speakers and sub-woofer all driven wirelessly. To be operated by your iPad or smart-

phone with access up to 16 million songs, 30,000 radio stations, the Sonos system will even pick up your music from your computer, phone or iPad wirelessly even if they are lossless 16 bit files, and for good measure, play your home movies or television in a stunning 5.1 digital surround sound. Twelve separate high grade amplifiers drive this system. For good measure you can set multiple rooms up wirelessly and enjoy a different musical performance in each room, all operated from the phone. From what has appeared to be an over-complicated world of technology, sensible solutions are emerging.

The Wiggles are coming to Albury this Saturday and Sunday on the very first leg of their new tour.

Getting a Wiggle on for Albury By KRYSTEN MANUEL

OVER two decades ago the race was on between Anthony Field and Greg Page to decide who got the blue shirt - who got to be the Blue Wiggle. “All those years ago, we were outside a Fosseys store and they had a skivvy bin,” Field recalls. “Greg and I raced to that bin and thankfully I got the blue and he got the yellow.” Now, 21 years on, the Blue Wiggle is the only original member of the beloved children’s band who have taken home 11 ARIAs and were named Australia’s richest entertainers four years in a row by Business Review Weekly. With the Wiggles starting their next tour in Albury, Field was happy to speak to NewsWeekly about touring, passing on the feathersword and what he gets up to when he’s not wiggling. “I’ve been in that Big Red Car now for 21 years, going into the 22nd year, and I actually love touring, I’ve always loved it,” Field said. “But I did have a time a couple of years ago, maybe six or seven years ago, where it just got me down a bit because I was a new parent and I wasn’t seeing the children.” Field published a book about his struggles with depression, How I Got My Wiggle Back: A Memoir Of Heal-

ing, but has since got back to his usual self and the joy he finds in performing. “We had a lovely year last year, Greg came back and it got the guys to pass the baton onto Emma, Lachy and Simon,” he said. “This year out we go on tour for the first time, and we’re starting in Albury.” For anyone who remembers the early days of the Wiggles, the Blue Wiggle was never on stage with Captain Feathersword. Mystery solved - the Blue Wiggle was Captain Feathersword, but not for long! it seems that Field was more than happy to walk the plank on that one. “I must admit, I was really happy to hand over the feathersword to Paul Paddick who has played him now for 19 years - he’s a fantastic actor,” Field said. “No-one in the world who has seen my performance and his performance would prefer my performance. He is so much better and I don’t mind saying that.” Playing two characters would be a lot of work, especially seeing as each character has their own set nuances and preferences - who could forget Jeff and his constant sleeping? And so the question begs, ‘who is most like their character?’ “Jeff,” Field answered quickly. “Jeff is the most laid-back guy in the world. All those years ago I rang Jeff up and said ‘Look, I’ve got this idea for a

Box office

kids’ group, do you want to come over and help us record?’ And he said, ‘How long is it going to take?’ ” With so much money and success under his belt, Field still continues wiggling, but when out of uniform, enjoys his family life. “When I’m at home we have the best time,” Field said. Field has three children and a “very understanding” wife, Miki, who takes her husband’s constant touring all in her stride. “It’s a double-edged sword,” he said. “Because of the success of the job I’ve got a lovely house and all those trappings of success, but the downside is I’m away so much and I know that’s not great for children if dad’s away a lot, so I try and make up for it as much as I can.” One would think the children of a Wiggle would think themselves to be the luckiest kids on earth, but apparently that’s not the case. “They said they preferred Dorothy the Dinosaur to me any day and my little boy preferred Captain Feathersword, so I never got a big head about it,” Field said. “To them I’m not a Wiggle, I’m just Dad.” The Wiggles will be visiting Albury on 2 and 3 March at the Albury Entertainment centre. MOVIE: Beautiful Creatures DURATION: 124 minutes I HAVE to agree with the critics on one thing - it was kind of like Twilight, but not as good. Beautiful Creatures follows the same themes as Twilight, including death, sacrifice and love against all odds. Set in the South, the story starts with a teenage boy (Ethan played by Alden Ehrenreich) and his dreams of a faceless woman night after night. Several months after that, a mysterious girl (Lena, played by Alice Englert)

comes to town and some inexplicable things begin to happen around her. Intrigued by the girl of his dreams, Ethan quickly learns that Lena is no ordinary girl, she’s a “caster” (witch), and her time with him is limited. A tattoo on Lena’s hand is a constant reminder of her 16th birthday, as it counts down the days. She fears the curse that has plagued her family for generations - that on her 16th birthday she will become an evil caster and all that is good in her life will be lost. Together, Ethan and Lena fight against the curse for freedom and love.

It’s an interesting choice of cast I’m not sure if it was the actors or the characters themselves, but I found myself lacking the compassion I wanted to have for these two. Ethan was not the endearing heartthrob I would have expected from a movie aiming at an early adult audience, and could even be described as a bit of a hillbilly. The plot was what saved this movie - fascinating and detailed, the audience was distracted from the strange characters as more points of interest were introduced, including the amazing set.

By KRYSTEN MANUEL RESIDENTS of Barnawartha are proud of their local watering-hole, and it seems that visitors are also on board, praising the humble country pub on tripadvisor.com. “I have visited The Star Hotel Barnawartha previously, and after refurbishment, it is a credit to the owners, with comfortable, relaxing decor in both the lounge/dining room and bar, which boasts a large selection of refreshments,” one happy customer said. Another overly satisfied customer fell in love with the country charm The Star embodied, and urged people from near and far and treat themselves. “Only 10 minutes from Wodonga is this fantastic little gem of a hotel offering great food and a warm atmosphere,” they said. “There is a beer garden out the back - perfect for a sunny afternoon and the food was well priced and very, very good. “If you are travelling to Albury Wodonga it is well and truly worth the minor detour off the highway.” Yes, it’s true, The Star Hotel Barnawartha has a lot to offer the traveller, the local and even those from the Border and surrounding areas in need of a change of scenery. Comprised of a bar, bistro, function room that can cater for up to 100 people, rustic beer garden as well as rooms to let, The Star also offers a 50-seater bus for functions and a large parking area. “It’s a friendly atmosphere where you can sit down and relax outside the city of Albury Wodonga,” owner, Diane Fenton said. “People can just go out the back to the beer garden, stand at the bar and have a drink and talk, sit around underneath the trees - it’s quite good.” The Star is also making some changes in the kitchen, having leased the restaurant out to Anthony Saltalamacchia and Angela Hunter, who will be welcoming guests to the new Bistro B in just days’ time. “We plan to bring our interpretation of modern food to the area, but without the high prices,” Anthony said. “The menu will consist of some traditional bistro meals - parmas, steaks and that sort of

Pride in the pub thing, but we’re also going to be doing a lot more modern, trendy meals.” Anthony and Angela are planning to source as many of their ingredients locally as possible. “We’re working solidly with the Rutherglen butchers, we have an awesome Southern-Italian blend of coffee beans coming from Platform 9 and we’re sourcing a lot of local olives and things like that,” Anthony said. And with seafood coming in fresh from the Melbourne markets, patrons can look forward to a mouth-watering menu and some signature dishes to die for. “Our signature steak is an eye fillet with a really luscious seafood sauce and fresh seafood

around it including DC prawns, yabbies and other shellfish,” Anthony said. “But the thing that will become a favourite will be our grazing platter, which is a range of all of our entrees, so you can come in for a light lunch and spend the afternoon experiencing a lot of Italian and other European style dishes.” Furthermore, if you’re travelling and need to put head to pillow, rest assured the rooms at The Star are not like regular pub rooms. Offering three double rooms and two family rooms that include two separate bedrooms, Diane and Keith have also purchased brand new beds, linen and furnishings - and the effort hasn’t gone unnoticed.

The house that Ben built By KRYSTEN MANUEL

LOCAL man, Ben Lazzarotto, has lived in and completely renovated two houses over the past 10 years, so if anyone knows the ins and outs of renovating, it’s him. “I say I’ll never do it again, but this is my hobby, I’m proud of it and if I make money out of it then that’s just a bonus, he said. After leaving the army and getting sick of throwing dead money into renting, a stroke of luck came Ben’s way in the form of the old matron of the Holbrook Hospital. “Mum told me the old matron of the hospital said she was looking to sell her house for thirty something thousand, he said. “I checked out the house and it needed a lot of work done to it, but I thought ‘bugger it, I can do it.’ “The real estate agent said ‘you cannot sell this house for thirty grand, that’s ridiculous,’ and the matron said, ‘well I bought it for $20,000 back in the day, so if I double my money, I think I’m doing pretty good.’ “So I got it for $42,000. Over the next four years, Ben spent around $20,000 on the house and when the housing boom came through Holbrook, the profit was pocketed. “I was lucky enough to peel that out at $130,000 and that set me up for this house, he said.

Currently finalising his second house, Ben looks back on his journey and speaks from experience when he advises prospective renovators of a few iron-clad rules that could make or break their renovating experience. “I had a problem with nearly finishing one job and then starting another, he said. “You really have to get it to completion and move to the next one. “Split up jobs, decide if you have enough knowledge to do it yourself, or ring someone. “Know when you’re over your head and when you need to call an expert - it will end up costing you less in the long run. “If you don’t have market research behind you, and you don’t know what other houses are selling for, then you’re going in blind. “Take help from friends and family. “Eliminate labour costs, that’s where you’ll save the most amount of money, meaning that’s where you’ll make the most amount of money in your profit. “When you first go into a house and decide you’re going to renovate it, look at all the things you would change and write them down. If you’re living in the house, they will grow on you. “You need a real estate agent and a property valuer. You don’t want to be doing stuff to a house when it’s

WARDROBE

not going to make any money - it’s not your house. And finally, don’t have horses in your backyard. “At my house in Holbrook, my ex decided that she wanted a foal in the backyard so she could rear it or whatever the bloody hell she was doing with it. “We had it roped off and that was fine, but for some reason, she decided to take the rope down because the horse could then come up to the window, and she thought it was pretty cool that the horse could stick its head in. “She wasn’t there for a little while, the rope was down and it decided that it wanted to chew the timber on the doors, just after they had been installed and painstakingly lacquered as well. “It had just gnawed at the timber in at least four different spots and really chewed the window as well. “I was not happy, let’s put it that way. I was very, very angry. “Those doors were pride of place, they were the most expensive thing in the house, and I was proud of them. “I was that upset I could have punched the horse. All in all, Ben has indulged his passion and made a substantial profit from renovating. “With some things, you just have to have a crack, he said.

Ben’s latest project when it was first purchased.

The Wantigong Street house is nearing completion and Ben is ready to start his next project.

Best underfoot SOLOMONS Flooring offers a wide range of products and services to make renovating a home a breeze. And Solomons now provide a more convenient service with a second store open opposite the Myer car park in David Street, Albury, to better serve both sides of the border. Owners Todd and Kristy Mackenzie stock the latest in carpets, vinyl, rugs, blinds, timbers and laminates. “We do things from matching up existing items through to creating your own home,” Mr Mackenzie explained. “We install all our blinds, carpets, vinyls, timbers, absolutely everything. “And there are also options, like some of the timers, that you can safely and easily install yourself and save a bit of money.” The team at Solomons Flooring takes a hands-on approach to ensuring the products they supply and install match the interior of a home. “First and foremost we try to get a rough idea as to what you want, what type of fibre, style, plain or pattern, and bring out a selection of those and match it up to your décor,” Mr Mackenzie said. “And the best part about it is we can do it in your home, your environment, your light conditions and in your time. “And it costs nothing.” Solomons stocks the latest

Mr Mackenzie has been in the industry for almost 18 years and has run the Wodonga store with his wife for six years. “We have a really good customer base,” he said. “I don’t think there’s been

DAHLSENS future could not be brighter and clearer after 135 years of operation. The company was established 1877, is still family owned and operated and is, as you would expect, 100 per cent Australian owned. Dahlsens core business is about serving the builder, the serious home renovator and the professional building tradesperson. However, the increasing intensity in retail hardware, especially with the competition between the big guys, along with an extremely tough market has forced Dahlsens to re-focus its energy on its core business, with minimal exposure to hardware retail (selling barbecues, furniture, potting mix, and the like). They are now solely fo-

One of the more popular renovations is converting the garage to extra bedroom or living space. The Essential sliding door and the multi panel/sliding stacker door, are a wonderfully functional and economic choice for covering a large area. These sliding doors glide effortlessly, and a visit to the showroom is recommended to experience the functionality and ease of utilising these fantastic products in your project. Wunderbar offers a professional removal and installation service to customers, giving your home an instant make-over from both the inside and out, and adding a new modern feeling and increased capital value to your home.

Double glazing to existing windows continues on its upward trend of popularity, and is a significant portion of Wunderbar’s daily manufacture. Wunderbar has been able to double glaze over 95 per cent of clients existing window frames, enabling those homes to now benefit from greater energy efficiency, without the investment of completely new windows. Showerscreens, mirrors and sliding robe door installations are also quite popular. We offer a complete package to the home owner, with a professional measure and fit service, including removal of your existing older style showerscreens, supply and fit of fresh new screens that blend with any décor. You’ll be saying that’s WUNDERBAR.

Homes&Property Albury Wodonga

A touch of class By TREVOR JACKSON FIRST-HOME buyers, investors, families or retirees - this week’s featured home suits them all. Whether you’re looking to enter the real estate market, maybe wanting to update that rental portfolio or retiring and still want that extra space for when the family comes to visit, this eight years young home is well worth a look. From the pleasant and well-established outlook to the functional and private backyard, there’s much more here than first meets the eye. Set back off the street at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac this three-bedroom family home provides privacy and comfort with the opportunity for stylish entertaining. Street appeal is enhanced by a pair of arch-style windows in the master bedroom overlooking the well-established and easy-to-maintain front gardens. Upon entry a feeling of space is apparent with a wide, tiled hallway providing ease of access and a light, airy feel. The spacious main bedroom includes a large walk-in robe and tasteful ensuite

3

to pamper the masters of the home, with the beautiful outlook through those arch windows. Two other double bedrooms are situated further down the hall, both including built-in robes, with a spacious main bathroom, complete with deep bath and a separate toilet for added convenience. The main living zone is one of the features of this home, with space and a touch of class evident. This open-plan area is well thought out, taking advantage of space while providing ample room for the growing family to relax. The kitchen features stainless-steel cooking and dishwasher, a large island bench and double sink. Ample room is provided for the family to sit and share a movie or enjoy a bit of family time and there’s ample space to include a large dining suite. And when the family comes to visit, friends arrive for the weekend barbecue, or you just wish to entertain in a relaxed atmosphere, there’s space aplenty to spill outside and enjoy the great outdoors. A deep, covered, L-shaped verandah

provides the perfect alfresco dining opportunity, with a pitched roof for a touch of class and more than enough space and shelter for a barbecue, or maybe to add an outdoor kitchen, should you so desire. The grounds are well maintained with semi-mature trees in place that will grow to provide extra shade and privacy, and a pleasant space for the children to enjoy. A garden shed with concrete floor takes care of the mandatory tools while a rear roller door on the double garage allows easy access for a trailer, or maybe that extra storage space for the tinny. The garage also features a remote panel front door and interior access while ducted heating and cooling keep the home comfortable all year round. As an added advantage the home provides easy access to all the Border has to offer, just a stone’s throw from the Bandiana Link, within easy reach of Whitebox Rise shopping centre and a few minutes down the road from Wodonga CBD. With a quality tenant currently in place this home can be purchased as the perfect investment property or with vacant possession, ready to move in and enjoy.

THE REIV has released data revealing the amount of equity that could be unlocked through downsizing by retiree-aged home owners. Retirees can take advantage of the 25 or 30 years spent paying off their home loan by downsizing. This research will give them the tools to weigh up the options. By downsizing not only do they unlock the wealth generated over 25 or 30 years but they can also access a simpler lifestyle. The 2011 Census showed the high number of homes with owners living alone in houses with unused bedrooms. For example, two thirds of Victorians who live alone aged over 65 do so in a house with three or more bedrooms. The data, which is available on www.reiv.com.au, shows examples of the equity than could be unlocked by downsizing in three different scenarios. The suburbs with the greatest downsize potential were usually

located in the inner to middle Melbourne suburbs such as Kew and Ivanhoe as well as on the bay such as in Sandringham and Beaumaris. These are invariably suburbs with a high share of retirement aged, lone person households as well as relatively higher house prices. Areas outside Melbourne are also covered. This is already occurring in many parts of Melbourne - the new research makes is simpler for those considering it to establish a budget, construct a plan and then shop around on www.realestateview.com. au for the right property. Downsizing won’t be for everyone, but those that do can access funds to help boost their retirement income. It’s worth noting that the State Government provides for discounts to stamp duty for pensioners and holders of Commonwealth Seniors cards for properties to a certain value.

From karts to the big time Pool feels like home By TREVOR JACKSON

Lachlan McDonald is ready to tackle Adelaide’s daunting street circuit this weekend.

BORDER race driver Lachlan McDonald is heading for the big time. He’ll be punting his Aussie Race Car around the Adelaide circuit this weekend in a support category at the opening round of the V8 Supercars Clipsal 500 meeting. And while a daunting prospect for any driver, the concrete canyons of the Adelaide circuit are something he’s looking to with great anticipation. “It is jumping in the deep end, he admitted. “The big concrete barriers are a bit daunting, but we’ve done a bit of testing over the summer. I’ve got as familiar as I can with the track on the simulator at home, so it’s one of those things, I won’t know how I feel until I’ve done a few laps. At just 20, McDonald worked his way up through the ranks of karting, holding two Riverina Championships and a third place at the Australasian championships before being offered a drive in the Aussie Race Car last year at Winton. McDonald went on to finish the Winton round with a 13th place from a field of 28 and is looking to improve this season. “I was very pleased with that position, he said. “I was competing against guys who have been racing in the cat-

egory for five years or more. I’ve been racing under the guidance of John Reynolds - he was the one who got me involved in the category. He felt I was good enough to have a run so this year we signed up for the whole series. McDonald says he sees similarities in the car to driving a kart, with a low seating position and brakes he described as - “you couldn’t stop faster if you hit a tree. He says the added pressure a meeting such as the Clipsal 500 brings is a challenge he’s looking forward to. “The cars handle very similar to a go kart, he said. “But on the flip side it is a big learning experience. You’re racing against some very experienced drivers and you’re also racing in front of big crowds, so if you make a mistake, everyone sees it. You kind of feed off that pressure, you grab it and run with it. McDonald said he’d love to make a career from the sport but it’s one step at a time, and the weekend is all he’s focused on at the moment. “I feel pretty confident in the way the boys have set the car up, he said. “It is a daunting track for anyone, but it’s one of those things, if we get in and do some laps we should be fine. “I’ll be happy to come away from the weekend as long as I’m not in the wall.

THE newly opened WAVES swimming facility at Wodonga has provided more than just a modern swim centre for the community it’s also provided a new home for Wodonga Swimming Club. Club president Harald Stadelmann said the club’s swimmers were excited about training and racing at the “first-class facility and the club was pleased to be able to offer such facilities to its present and future members. “This is a great opportunity to explain what our club is all about, he said. “The club caters for a range of skills from junior development through to state and national level swimmers. We especially welcome young swimmers starting out in the sport.

“We have a fantastic team of coaches who have taken our club ranking to 11th in the state and the sixth-highest performing of all clubs in country Victoria. Wodonga Swimming Club also has a team of eight swimmers who have qualified for National Age Championships this year. “It is great for our junior swimmers to see that it is possible for young children who start out swimming at the local pool, who are then able to develop the skills to compete in National Championships, swimming against the best swimmers in their age group from all over Australia, Mr Stadelmann said.
